Sales and trading are not easy businesses to be in.

They take quick decision making, skill, and determination to get ahead, as technology makes humans less relevant and profits for the business continue to dwindle. It's tough for folks to get ahead.

But we've gleaned some of the top 35-and-under Wall Streeters in sales and trading who are way ahead.

As part of our rising stars of Wall Street list, Business Insider sifted through hundreds of nominations of some of Wall Street's top talent to find those who have stood out in a crowd of thousands.

We came across many talented people, and this list is by no means comprehensive. To be eligible, we asked that nominees be based in or around the New York area, age 35 or under, and distinguished in some way from the pack.

Their roles range in scope, covering research to sales to trading to market infrastructure. But they all represent the future of an ever-changing industry.

Following are Business Insider's list of the 18 top young Wall Streeters in sales and trading.

Stan Feldman, 28, IEX

At 28, Stan Feldman is the youngest cofounder of IEX, the upstart exchange made famous in Michael Lewis' hit "Flash Boys."

As head of the exchange's business analytics team, Feldman's trading analysis helps guide the exchange's strategic decisions. Before joining IEX in 2012, Feldman was an analyst on RBC Capital Markets' US equities electronic-trading team.

He was also an intern a Nasdaq, a rival of IEX, during the summer of 2009, according to his LinkedIn. Feldman graduated from New York University with a degree in finance, marketing, and mathematics.

Olivia Kelly, 29, OpenDoor

Olivia Kelly, a native of Syracuse, is the VP of Market Support at OpenDoor, a platform for off-the-run US Treasuries and TIPS.

The 29-year-old has spent more than six years working in fixed-income in electronic trading and brokering.

Today she leads a team of six and is responsible for bringing on new clients. Kelly also helped build a new TIPS trading platform, used by nearly a third of OpenDoor's clients.

OpenDoor, which launched in April, raised $10 million from private investors in June.

Vlad Khandros, 29, UBS

Vlad Khandros, 29, can be best thought of as UBS' king of liquidity. As the global head of market structure and liquidity strategy, the Ukraine native wears many hats, leading three global teams based in London, New York, and Hong Kong.

Through research and technology, Khandros helps clients handle their order flows and understand the complexity of the markets.

Khandros got his start at the bank six years ago. He came from Liquidnet, a financial-services firm, in 2011, where he left as global cohead of corporate strategy.

Khandros studied economics and political science at Rutgers University.

UBS has a strong equities business, ranking in the top six globally for the first half of 2017, according to data from Coalition. It generated $1.9 billion in equities revenues in the first half. up slightly from the same period a year earlier.

Tom Brady is the Apple of the NFL — 7 quarterbacks and their tech company equivalents (AAPL, APRN, TSLA, TWTR, BABA, AMZN, FB)

$

Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers

Tech companies and NFL quarterbacks have a surprising amount in common.

While tech stocks carry outsize influence, often dictating the direction of the whole market, professional football teams are also at the whim of their signal-callers. The market would crash if tech stocks started failing — the dot-com bubble anyone? — just in the way an injury to an NFL team's starting quarterback usually spells certain disaster.

Now, as the NFL season kicks off, many casual football fans are trying to get up to speed on which players and teams to watch. And there's no better place to start than with the guys who are throwing the passes.

Below is a breakdown to help make sense of it all, with a special focus on the tech companies that best embody some of the league's most notable quarterbacks.

Aaron Rodgers is Amazon

Remember when Amazon was just an online bookstore? Well, before Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was an MVP and Super Bowl champion, he was just NFL legend Brett Favre's backup.

It took Amazon and Rodgers years of quietly toiling away at their respective trades, plotting world domination, for them to break out and realize their immense potential. Amazon is now disrupting every industry in sight, while Rodgers is continuing his reign of terror over opposing defenses and once is again expected to carry his team to a fantastic season. And, like Amazon, Rodgers is showing no signs of slowing.

Also notable is how both Amazon and Rodgers faced their share of doubters during their respective ascents. Short-sighted pessimists first questioned Amazon's initial foray into online bookselling and then scratched their heads when the retail juggernaut broadened its scope. Rodgers suffered the indignity of slipping to the 24th pick in the NFL draft, despite being projected as a top selection, and then was stuck as Favre's understudy for three full seasons.

Tom Brady is Apple

The two undisputed kings of their respective fields. New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is a five-time Super Bowl champion and a two-time NFL MVP, and he is widely considered to be one of the best to ever play the game. Apple is the biggest company in the world, is still growing rapidly, and holds more cash than many small nations.

Both Brady and Apple got where they are today because of legendary leadership. Brady has benefited greatly from the tutelage of Patriots coach Bill Belichick, one of the greatest and winningest coaches in NFL history. Apple prospered under the visionary guidance of CEO Steve Jobs, who designed such landscape-altering products as the iPhone during his tenure.

That's not to say the two have always had it easy. Brady tore an ACL in his team's first game in 2008 and missed the rest of the season. Similarly, Jobs was fired in 1985, a move that almost destroyed the company. Needless to say, both entities bounced back, and today they are viewed as unstoppable forces.

Cam Newton is Facebook

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton experienced almost immediate success upon entering the NFL in 2011, winning the Offensive Rookie of the Year award and eventually carrying his team to the Super Bowl. Facebook initially had a little tougher time gathering steam, but it still managed to grow its market cap by roughly 50% over its first two years after going public in 2012. It has since become one of the most valuable companies in the world.

Further, Newton is already one of the elite few to have been named an NFL MVP (in 2015), while Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is one of the richest people in the world, with a net worth of roughly $70 billion.

That's not to say their respective ascents were without hiccups — both were accused of stealing early in their careers. Newton was suspended from the University of Florida football team in 2008 after he was arrested on suspicion of stealing a laptop from another student, while Zuckerberg was sued over claims that he stole the idea for Facebook from the Winklevoss twins.

They both recovered swiftly. Newton transferred to Auburn, where he won a national championship and the Heisman Trophy as the country's top player, while Zuckerberg was able to move past the lawsuit to become the highly respected billionaire CEO he is today.

One player from all 30 NBA teams who can break out and become a star this season

$

dejounte murray

The NBA season is upon us once again, and it figures to be an interesting one.

While this offseason saw insane movement among star players, this NBA season should be equally as interesting for the number of exciting young players that look poised to break out.

We went through each roster to find a potential breakout player for all 30 teams. When possible, we tried to avoid choosing rookies, but on some occasions, a promising rookie was the clearest choice.

Take a look at the players who could become stars this year.

Atlanta Hawks: John Collins, PF

Experience: Rookie

One thing to know: Collins excelled at Summer League, showing off athleticism and a knack for finishing around the basket. With the departure of Paul Millsap in the offseason, he should be able to soak up many of the minutes and delight fans with highlight-reel plays.

Boston Celtics: Jayson Tatum, F

Experience: Rookie

One thing to know: Tatum has already impressed people around the Celtics with his ability to pick up schemes and plays. He appears to already be an NBA-ready scorer, and Celtics president Danny Ainge said he liked Tatum enough that he would have taken him No. 1 in the draft.

Brooklyn Nets: D'Angelo Russell, G

Experience: 3rd season

One thing to know: Russell's growth in LA stalled out, and with the team all but locked in on Lonzo Ball, he got shipped off to Brooklyn. Now he'll get a chance to both play on the ball and off of it next to Jeremy Lin and his crafty playmaking and shooting could make him a foundational piece for a growing Nets team.

Everlane, an online clothing store, has earned itself a cult following in the last few years, thanks to modern tweaks to timeless classics and a refreshing policy on transparency with customers.

And from now until November 12, you can shop its pop-in at Nordstrom.

You’ll find the essentials in the same materials that you’d find at a high-end store you grew up knowing, but for a substantially lower price. Grade-A cashmere for $100, Italian wool for under $130, and Japanese denim for under $70 are just some examples.

If great materials at low prices don't add up for you, it’s important to know that the low costs aren’t the result of less desirable designs or any other trade-off on your part: Everlane is the master of staple silhouettes. Rather, essentials made from great materials at affordable prices is the result of an aggressive campaign to nix traditional retail markups, and to be upfront about how and why.

On Everlane's website, you can see the projected "traditional retail" cost alongside its own. For example, the Luxe Wool Square Turtleneck is $88 at Everlane and might be sold for $180 elsewhere.

Plus, every piece is ethically made (and they give you the resources to fact-check that claim).

It makes sense that Nordstrom noticed a startup that generated a 28,000-person waitlist for its iteration of the low block heel. And it doesn’t hurt that Everlane just forayed into affordable, high-quality denim, either. If you're looking for affordable classics in quality materials and flattering shapes, you might want to check what's available at the pop-in.

Shop the Everlane X Nordstrom Pop-In here, and check out some of the best pieces for both men and women below.

Meet the investors age 35 and under making big bets and shaking up money management

Introducing the Rising Stars in Asset Management age 35 and under.

We scoured our contacts for ideas on who we should include, receiving recommendations from bosses, colleagues, recruiters and others working in the asset management industry. The editors made final decisions.

We've included people with a variety of roles and experiences, from companies including D.E. Shaw, State Street, Fidelity, BlackRock, Bridgewater, Point72, Millennium, AllianceBernstein, Och-Ziff and Vanguard.

Some have risen to senior roles within established firms. Take Karen Karniol-Tambour, 32,who oversees research and about 100 staffers at Bridgewater Associates, the world's largest hedge-fund firm with $160 billion. We've also included Eric Evans, a 26-year-old director of research at Weiss Multi-Strategy Advisers, a New York hedge fund.

Others have put up particularly strong numbers. Brian Lempel, 35, who manages about $12 billion at Fidelity, was up about 44% in his portfolio for the first half of this year.

Others have embarked on launching their own companies, like Fahmi Quadir, 27, who, after making an impressive short bet on Valeant, is launching a short-selling-focused hedge fund, Safkhet Capital.

We came across many talented people, and this list is by no means comprehensive. To be eligible, we asked that nominees be based in or around the New York area, age 35 or under, and distinguished in some way from the pack.

Eric Evans, 26, Weiss Multi-Strategy Advisers

Evans, 26, is head of research and an investment analyst at Weiss Multi-Strategy Advisers, a hedge-fund firm in New York that manages more than $1.8 billion.

Evans was appointed head of research at age 25, in April 2016. His responsibilities include leading process enhancement and the cost-management effort at the firm. That includes figuring out how to make the investment teams work more efficiently, developing tools that help the firm monitor skills and behavioral biases.

Evans also manages relationships with more than 100 counterparties that work with Weiss.

As an investment analyst, Evans focuses on investing in energy stocks and derivatives, one of several sectors Weiss invests in. Evans got his start at the firm as a summer intern ahead of his senior year of college at the University of Florida. He worked at Citi as an analyst in leveraged finance before moving back to Weiss.

A Miami native, Evans holds a bachelor's and master's degree in finance from the University of Florida, which he completed in four years.

Fahmi Quadir, 27, Safkhet Capital

Quadir, 27, is launching a short-selling-focused hedge fund, Safkhet Capital. The fund, which is targeting a $200 million soft close for next year, will focus on betting against fraudulent companies.

Quadir previously worked at Deallus Consulting, where she did investigative work for pharmaceutical clients. One of the companies she came across was Valeant Pharmaceuticals, which became valuable when she moved to hedge fund Krensavage Asset Management as an analyst. There, she initiated a short position on Valeant in June 2015 and continued to press as her conviction increased, leading to major gains for the fund as the stock plummeted.

Quadir holds a bachelor's degree in math and biology from Harvey Mudd College.

Jesse Reinherz, 27, Millennium Management

Reinherz, 27, is a stock-focused portfolio manager at Millennium Management, a $35 billion New York-based hedge-fund firm. He focuses on consumer and tech investing.

Reinherz joined Millennium earlier this year, and is one of the youngest portfolio managers in the firm's history. He previously was a senior investment analyst at Moore Capital, and worked on the sell side at Stifel, where he covered the beverage sector.

He holds a bachelor's degree in economics and math from Boston University.

The best first aid kits you can buy

$

TheInsider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

first aid 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • While you never want to need a first aid kit, should that need arise, you'll be glad you planned ahead and kept some high-quality medical supplies on hand. The First Aid Only All-Purpose First Aid Kit is our top choice because it's compact, carefully curated, and affordable, too.

First, permit me to share a few words on my relationship with the first aid kit. I keep a stocked first aid kit in both of our cars, in the home, at the ready for travel, and packed and ready to go with my hiking gear. I also have a few bandages tucked into my wallet. Now, I'm not a disaster prepper or anything like that. In fact, I'm pretty confident that society will be just fine in the long run, and I'd generally recommend people spend more time managing their retirement portfolio than stocking their fallout shelters.

I do very much like being prepared, though. It's just that my preparation is for cuts, scrapes, and burns around the home, a twisted (or broken) ankle or painful insect bite sustained out in the field, or even a car accident that requires more serious and expedient medical attention. As a frequent camper and hiker, I know that having a first aid kit is at times not simply a good idea, but an absolute necessity. When you're a three-day hike from the nearest hospital, you'd better be able to count on your own supplies in the event of injury or illness.

When I first started heading out into the woodlands and mountains, I carried a homemade first aid kit tucked into an old Altoids tin. It had all the basics, like bandages, antiseptic wipes, medical tape, anti-itch and burn relief gels, and so forth. In fact, I think I assembled a pretty solid little kit, and it served me well over the years. But there were a few problems: The ointments and gels would almost invariably dry out over time, the tape and bandages would grow brittle and lose their adhesion, and every time I used this or that component, I had to be sure to later re-stock it, and it was often hard to keep track of what I needed on an ad hoc basis. When I switched to a professionally assembled kit, I spent a few more dollars but got a lot more peace of mind.

How to choose the right first aid kit for you

A good first aid kit isn't a mobile trauma center, but it will provide the basic supplies you need to mitigate the ill effects of an accident, injury, or sudden illness. Remember, it's first aid, not final, comprehensive aid. When choosing a first aid kit, you need to think about who might depend on it (in terms of the sheer number of people and the age and disposition of the user), where it will be stored and/or carried, and in what situations the likely users might endure an injury or illness.

Any first aid kit worth considering will have the supplies needed to treat minor cuts, punctures, burns, and other such common injuries. Beyond that, the suitability of a given kit depends on a careful consideration of factors ranging from weight to packaging to redundancy of the supplies included. You know where you'll be when you might need first aid and/or who might be depending on your help.

Choose the first aid kit that best suits the people and the situations in which they'll be, and then hope you never have to use it. With those tips in mind, read on to see which of our top picks is best for your needs.

Although the First Aid Only All-Purpose First Aid Kit is our top pick, for the reasons laid out in the slides below, you should also consider the Be Smart Get Prepared 250 Piece First Aid Kit, the TripWorthy Compact Travel First Aid Kit, the Lightning X Products First Responder First Aid Kit, and the Coleman All Purpose Mini First Aid Kit.

The best first aid kit overall

Why you'll love it: The First Aid Only All-Purpose First Aid Kit comes with all the basic medical supplies you need for quick diagnostics and the treatments of many maladies.

The First Aid Only All-Purpose First Aid Kit packs 299 doctor-recommended supplies into a soft-sided case measuring just 9.25 by 7.5 inches on its sides and about three inches deep. It's only about the size of a hardcover book, but within this kit, you will find the tools needed to assess and treat everything from a scraped finger to a heavily bleeding gash, and from a mild headache to a high fever.

This First Aid Only kit comes with comprehensive wound cleaning and closure supplies, including multiple butterfly strips, gauze rolls and pads, and several types of bandages, not to mention the various alcohol, antiseptic, and antibiotic wipes and ointments. It's the perfect triage kit for all sorts of common injuries.

The kit also comes with an array of supplies invaluable to the person administering first aid, such as sterile vinyl gloves, a single-use thermometer, tweezers, and nickel-plated scissors. And for all that, this first aid kit still costs less than $20.

With nearly 2,000 ratings on Amazon, the First Aid Only All-Purpose First Aid Kit enjoys an excellent 4.7-star rating. One customer who keeps the kit at her workplace says it has made her "pretty much the go-to girl for medical needs," while another owner says it's "great for eitherthe car or to put in a backpack on hiking trips."

The reviewers with wiki.ezvid.com called this first aid kit "organized in a logical way that makes supplies easy to identify." A video reviewer on YouTube also noted how the plastic partition pockets help keep the various supplies grouped together for quick and easy access.

Pros: Compact but comprehensive, great low price, well organized

Cons: Limited shelf life, included tape is inferior

The best first aid kit for the office

Why you'll love it: The Be Smart Get Prepared 250 Piece First Aid Kit is OSHA and ANSI compliant and covers the first aid needs of up to 50 people, making it perfect for the office.

The Be Smart Get Prepared Kit is a large, comprehensive first aid kit designed to meet the needs of several dozen people. It's a great choice for businesses, retail locations, schools, churches, and even for the home. What this rather bulky kit is not suitable for travel or camping.

The kit is housed in a large hard plastic case that helps keep the components organized and protected, though the case is not watertight or resistant to moisture or temperature fluctuations that can affect some of the components, so it needs to be stored in a temperate indoor environment.

The Be Smart Get Prepared 250 Piece First Aid Kit has all the wound care components you would expect, from alcohol prep pads to antiseptic towelettes to multiple bandages in varied size. What sets this kit apart from the others in terms of suitability for use in the office or at a school are the medicines it comes with. Many of these medicines are something you will have ready access to at home, but not at work, school, or on other such locations.

The kit includes two types of pain and anti-inflammatory tablets and antacids, as well as cold packs, another handy feature for use when a kitchen with ice in the freezer might not be nearby.

The Be Smart Get Prepared 250 Piece First Aid Kit has a solid 4.4-star rating on Amazon, with a customer named Jeffrey saying "it is so great to have everything in one place." An owner named Loren speaks for many when she says it's "full of stuff I hope I never have to use."

A writer with SurvivalBlog.com appreciated how the kit was "organized in compartments ... inside the sturdy plastic case," while a description from Survival Safety Supplies noted its "comprehensive selection of first aid items."

Pros: Great choice for workplace, comes with selection of medicines, hard plastic shell protects components

Cons: Case is bulky and not water resistant, latches prone to failure

Buy the Be Smart Get Prepared 250 Piece First Aid Kit on Amazon for $21.99

The best first aid kit for the car

Why you'll love it: With the TripWorthy Compact Travel First Aid Kit in your car, truck, or boat, you'll be ready to face minor medical emergencies even when you're miles from home.

While I wouldn't recommend the Trip Worthy Compact Travel First Aid Kit for the hiker or the mountaineer, it's the perfect choice for the person, family, or group of friends traveling by car, boat, or even by bike or canoe. There are plenty of completely waterproof first aid kits designed expressly for use on the water, but as they tend to be bulkier, I'm recommending this one for the boat and/or the car — just try to keep it dry.

The kit is a bit too big for a trekker's backpack, but it's the perfect size for stashing in the trunk, under the seat, or in a bicycle's panniers.

It features six different types of adhesive bandages, gauze pads, butterfly strips, wraps, and tape, so getting a wound covered up will be easy. Cleaning out minor wounds won't be an issue either, thanks to the wipes and ointments that come tucked away in this compact kit.

Now, aside from size, why do I think this is a great first aid kit for travel? Five reasons. The TripWorthy Compact Travel First Aid Kit comes with a compass, an emergency blanket, a poncho, a rescue whistle, and a glow stick, all of which can help make the difference in a survival situation you endure while far from the comforts — and the supplies — of home. That moleskin blister pad won't hurt, either.

I do wish the kit had any itch relief ointments and burn gels included, but you can always add those later.

The TripWorthy Compact Travel First Aid Kit has a stellar 4.8-star rating even with hundreds of reviews logged. A satisfied owner named Steven speaks for many when he says: "It comes with me on every trip and I would never leave home without it."

Video reviewer Daddy-O Geek called the kit "very compact" yet said it came with "everything you need." In a write up with Gear We Are, a tester noted its great price point and its "medical grade quality components."

Pros: Comes with great survival gear, compact but comprehensive, features multiple bandage types

Cons: Packed tightly making it hard to quickly locate items

Macy's

Macy's is beginning to look a lot more like discount stores such as T.J. Maxx and Nordstrom Rack.

In the past two years, the struggling department store has launched an outlet store called Macy's Backstage, added dedicated "Last Act" clearance sections to stores, and said it would add more self-service systems to its beauty and shoe sections.

These changes mark a decisive shift away from being a full-service retailer.

Off-price retail is one of the only bright spots in the industry. This year, T.J. Maxx announced plans to open 1,800 more stores globally and reported 21 consecutive years of positive same-store sales. Macy's closed 66 stores in 2016 and plans to shutter another 34 in the next few years.

We took a trip to Macy's to see how the shopping experience had changed:

We visited the flagship Macy's store in New York's busy Herald Square. The store was built over a century ago and, at the time, was the world's largest store.

Our first impressions were positive. On a gray Friday afternoon, the ground-floor beauty section was pretty busy.

Beauty is an important area of growth for the store, especially as apparel sales weaken. The US beauty industry of premium products grew by 6% in 2016 and reached $17 billion in sales, according to the NPD market-research group.

Tesla is sending hundreds of Powerwall batteries to Puerto Rico — here's how the rechargeable battery works (TSLA)

Tesla CEO Elon Musk is speaking with Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rossello about using the company's battery options to restore power to the storm-ridden island.

Tesla has already sent hundreds of Powerwall batteries to Puerto Rico to help residents keep the lights on in their homes. Hurricane Maria, a Category 4 storm, knocked out Puerto Rico's electrical grid, and the island's 3.5 million residents may not get power again for another six months.

The Powerwall could help residents in the interim by helping owners stay disconnected from the grid until repairs are made.

The Powerwall can store energy generated by solar panels during the day to use later in the evening. It can also serve as a backup power supply in case there's an outage.

The battery can also draw electricity from the utility grid when rates are low and store it for later use.

Americans are passionate about where they shop.

While more and more people turn to online shopping for their food and clothing needs, plenty of shoppers still prefer to visit brick-and-mortar stores.

The location intelligence company Foursquare put together a list of the most popular department stores, clothing stores, and big box store chains in each state across the US, based on its own visit data.

Foursquare looked at the average number of visits per store in each state to determine its ranking. That allowed for some smaller chains like Uniqlo and Fred Meyer to beat out Walmart and Target in some states.

Check out the full list below.

21 of the world's most incredible abandoned sites

Field Station Berlin Teufelsberg

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Abandoned sites all over the world have a unique story to tell.
  • Houtouwan on Shengshan Island in China, for example, is an abandoned village in which nearly all the former homes and buildings are entirely covered in vegetation.
  • Bodie, California, is a classic American ghost town that dates back to the gold rush of the 1800s.

From once-thriving hotels that have fallen into a state of decay to defunct hospitals that are said to be haunted, there is always a fascinating story behind anything that's been abandoned.

There are many ghost towns in the US, for example, that were built during the gold rush of the 19th century and deserted soon after. Throughout Europe, there are forsaken castles and villages that shed light onto what life was like centuries ago.

From amusement parks to entire to entire villages, abandoned for reasons ranging from natural disasters to economic crises, these sites have become objects of fascination for travelers looking for a more unique way to explore a destination.

Keep reading for 21 of the most fascinating abandoned sites around the world.

Houtouwan, Shengshan Island, China

Tourists love to visit the small village of Houtouwan on Shengshan Island for its unique buildings that are completely covered in vines.

In part due to complications related to its isolated location, the village has been abandoned since the 1990s. A tiny population of locals remains, who often welcome the mass of tourists who flock to the island. If visitors peer into the windows of the vine-covered homes, they can see remnants of furniture, clothing, and other belongings that previous tenants left behind.

Train Graveyard, Uyuni, Bolivia

The Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia is the largest salt flat in the world, coming in at just over 4,000 square miles. Part of the flat has been unofficially designated as a train graveyard, housing tons of rusty, decayed locomotives.

The trains, many of which are now covered in graffiti, are mostly from Britain and date back to the 20th century. They decayed quickly, however, due to harsh salt winds. Visitors can now freely explore the odd attraction when visiting the remote salt flat.

Pripyat, Ukraine

On April 26, 1986, a radioactive release 10 times bigger than the nuclear bomb on Hiroshima occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power station. Around 350,000 people were forced to evacuate their homes, leaving in such a haste that the city looks like it's frozen in time.

Some of the most haunting images of the abandoned city come from an amusement park that was set to open right after the nuclear disaster. Bumper cars, roller coasters, and carousels are rusted and graffitied, but still remain in place as they did 30 years ago. Radiation levels in the city are still too high for people to live there, so it remains untouched.

Vintage photos taken by the EPA reveal what America looked like before pollution was regulated

Documerica

The Trump administration plans to kill the Clean Power Plan, the Obama administration's main initiative to fight climate change by lowering emissions, the Environmental Protection Agency's administrator, Scott Pruitt, said Monday.

The Clean Power Plan aimed to help the US reach the goals set in the Paris climate agreement by curbing emissions from power plants.

Pruitt has reportedly spent much of his term meeting with executives and lobbyists from companies and industries regulated by the EPA. Many reports also suggest that Pruitt's primary aim is to eliminate environmental protections and dismantle much of the regulatory agency.

Under Pruitt, the EPA has already reversed a ban on a pesticide that can harm children's brains and moved to rescind the Clean Water Rule, which clarified the Clean Water Act to prohibit industries from dumping pollutants into streams and wetlands. The agency has also reportedly begun an initiative to challenge climate science, among other rollbacks. Some of these moves have been challenged in court, but others are already in effect.

If Pruitt succeeds in rolling back a significant portion of the rules meant to protect air and water quality, we'd return to the state the US was in before these things were regulated.

The EPA was founded in 1970 and soon after began a photo project called Documerica that captured more than 81,000 images showing what the US looked like from 1971 to 1977. More than 20,000 photos were archived, and at least 15,000 have been digitized by the National Archives.

Here's a selection of those photos, many of which show what the US looked like without the air and water protections that exist today.

Smog, seen here obscuring the George Washington Bridge in New York, was a far bigger problem.

Factories burned discarded automobile batteries in the 1970s, releasing pollutants into the air. Current regulations require the batteries to be recycled without contaminating the surrounding area, though some are exported.

12 famous actors who have publicly praised and thanked Harvey Weinstein, and what they are saying now

jlaw and weinsteinFamed Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein — under fire for sexual harassment allegations unearthed by the New York Times, spanning decades — also happens to be one of the most praised people in Hollywood.

Weinstein has been thanked about 34 times in Oscar speeches, according to a 2015 Vocativ study — although it's likely the number has risen in the past two years.

Meryl Streep even referred to Weinstein as "God" in her 2012 Golden Globes acceptance speech.

But Streep has since condemned the producer, calling Weinstein's alleged behavior "inappropriate,""disgraceful," and "inexcusable" in a statement released Monday.

But besides Streep, and a handful of other actors who have spoken out, there has been a notable silence in Hollywood.

"Ladies of Hollywood, your silence is deafening," actress Rose McGowan tweeted on Friday.

The "silence" McGowan is referring to isn't imagined. Many in Hollywood are refusing to comment on the accusations made against the producer, according to an article published by The New York Times Sunday.

The Times reportedly reached out to 40 people in the entertainment industry, from Thursday to Saturday, and nearly every single person declined to speak on the record.

One publicist for an "A-list actress" reportedly told the Times that were wasn't an "upside" for her client to provide a comment, "since she did not have a movie to promote."

Claudia Eller, a Variety editor who spoke to the Times, said she believed that "there is still a lot of fear" when it comes to admonishing the producer, because the question of whether or not Weinstein is "really done" has yet to be answered.

On Sunday, Weinstein was fired from The Weinstein Company, which he helped found with his brother Bob Weinstein. And since then, a few more voices have spoken out (like Kevin Smith, who said he was "ashamed").

But many have not — yet. Superstars from Jennifer Lawrence to Christoph Waltz have publicly praised Weinstein. Will they now publicly disavow him, as Streep has done?

Here are 12 famous actors who publicly praised and thanked Weinstein:

Gwyneth Paltrow

Paltrow thanked Weinstein during her acceptance speech for her first Academy Award win in 1999. Paltrow won the award for best actress for her performance in "Shakespeare in Love."

"I would like to thank Harvey Weinstein, and everyone at Miramax films for their undying support of me," Paltrow said.

Gwyneth Paltrow did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

Meryl Streep

“I want to thank God: Harvey Weinstein. The punisher. Old Testament, I guess," Streep said while accepting the Golden Globe for her role in "The Iron Lady."

While Weinstein once received high praise from the actress, Streep has since condemned the producer in a statement she released Monday, in which she called the producer's behavior "disgraceful."

"The behavior is inexcusable, but the abuse of power familiar. Each brave voice that is raised, heard and credited by our watchdog media will ultimately change the game,” Streep wrote.

Ben Affleck

"Harvey Weinstein, who believed in us, and made this movie," Affleck said nervously while accepting his Oscar for best screenwriting with Matt Damon in 1997.

The pair won the award for their breakout hit "Good Will Hunting."

Ben Affleck did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.
