10 Fast Food Chains That Serve Fresh And Healthy Cuisine

Native Foods Cafe

"Improved fast-food chains" that serve quick, healthful fare seem to be popping up everywhere.

And millennials, especially, are taking notice — McDonald'srecently fell out of the demographic's top 10 favorite restaurant chains.

Consumers at these "improved" chains should still watch out for calorie-heavy items like salad dressings and sauces. But these eateries keep emphasis on "fresh" over "fried" and still get food out the door fast.

Here are 10 quickly growing "improved" fast-food restaurants that are a hit with diners.

Freshii

What they serve: Soups, burritos, salads and wraps. Meals can be customized with a variety of meats and toppings.

Location: Restaurants in 35 cities in eight countries, including the U.S. and Canada.

The story: Founder Matthew Corrin was a marketing manager for Oscar de la Renta before joining the dining industry. The store was founded in 2005 in Toronto.

Review: "If the concept is a little less fresh than it used to be, that's not a bad thing. We have eaten a lot of kebabs and pizza in the pursuit of good takeout. The arrival of fresh fast food couldn't have happened soon enough."— The Washington Post

Maoz

What they serve: Vegetarian pita pockets and salads with falafel and hummus. Customers can choose toppings and sauces from a self-serve salad bar.

Location: Six restaurants in the U.S. and five overseas.

The story: Maoz was founded in Amsterdam in 1991. The restaurant's mantra is quick, vegetarian food.

Review: "The sauces have character, particularly the green chili and garlic, which make great dips for a menu item that’s a clue to Maoz’s Northern European roots: perfectly crisp (if a bit too thick-cut) Belgian fries."— New York Times

Native Foods Café

What they serve: Fast-casual vegan foods, including salads, sandwiches and "Earth Bowls." The Baja Blackened Tacos are filled with chipotle surfer sauce, cabbage tempeh and guacamole.

Location: 14 locations in California, Colorado and Chicago.

The story: The chain got its start in Palm Springs in 1994. Its menu is completely meatless.

Review: "Even meat eaters will like Native Foods Cafe! The menu describes what the plant-based protein “meat” items are and what the Native Cheese consists of. You won’t even be able to tell the difference, but you will feel less guilty after you walk out of there with a full belly."– redlotusmama.com

Go Inside The Plant Where Boeing Builds The World's Best-Selling Airliner

RENTON BOEING 737 LINE 1 FULL SHOT TO DAY 1 TO 4 1 copy

On April 24 and 25, American Airlines's Boeing 777-300 had its Grand Opening / Coming Out Party with a two-day delivery flight event that we were fortunate enough to be invited on.

Our “AAdventure” began with a trip to Boeing’s Renton plant. Renton, southeast of Seattle, is a real treat, as it is not open for public tours and photography is generally prohibited.

This is the most prolific airliner plant in history, and one key to American’s fleet renewal plan. At a relatively compact 278 hemmed-in acres, Renton — the exclusive final assembly home of the world’s best selling airliner, the Boeing 737 — lives in the shadow of its larger sibling plant in Everett.

But in terms of importance to airlines and the Boeing Company, Renton plays second fiddle to no one.

Editor's Note: You can read more about Chris' tour of the 737 and 777 factory here, and about the aircraft delivery hereAmerican Airlines paid for Chris' hotel.

The Renton plant was the largest building in the world by volume until Everett was constructed in the late 1960s.

The dizzying “tale of the tape” continues with more world-beating stats. As of a few years ago, Renton produced 42% of the world’s entire jet fleet.

It is the exclusive final assembly home of the world’s best selling airliner, the Boeing 737.

lena dunham williamsburg penthouseThe New York Daily News reported yesterday that Lena Dunham from HBO's "Girls" was looking at a swanky $4.45 million bachelorette pad in Williamsburg.

The home, which is currently listed through Douglas Elliman Real Estate, has three bedrooms and well over 3,000 square feet of space, including a massive wrap-around terrace with views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens.

No word yet on if the "Girls" creator/director/star is set to purchase the home in Williamsburg's Gretsch Building, but Dunham is in the market for a new property.

She wrote “Do you think it’s weird to bring my dog to see a realtor?” in a text message to a friend that she later posted to Instagram.

The penthouse Dunham toured was the only home located on top of The Gretsch Building in Williamsburg.

It takes up the entire upper floor with 3,198-square-feet of space and two private elevator entrances.

9 Ways California Is Way Better Than Texas

californians

We recently did a head-to-head comparison of the benefits of living in California versus those for Texas.

California won by a hair.

The impetus for the piece was the burgeoning rivalry between the two states, which heated up after Texas Gov. Rick Perry ran a series of ads touting his state's friendlier business climate.

But we wanted to narrow in a bit more on all the things California has to offer that Gov. Perry may have ignored.

To be clear, we have nothing against Texas — some of us are products of their finest schools

We just think people need to be reminded that the Golden State still has a lot going for it.

California has lower property tax rates.

The average is 0.80%, compared with Texas' 1.74%.

Source: Tax Foundation

College graduation rates there are impressive.

California graduates 34.8% of its college students in four years, and 65.1% in six. Compare that with 24.4% and 49.0%, respectively, for Texas.

Source: Chronicle of Higher Education

Students get better SAT scores (though slightly fewer take them).

The average California high school student's score is 1513. In Texas it's 1446.

Farrell Wu 12, PhilippinesWho are the most brilliant kids in the world?

How much would the world benefit if we could find out, and get those kids training from the best educators on the on the planet?

Those are the question that Brilliant, a startup in Palo Alto, California, wants to find answers to.

Brilliant CEO Sue Khim's belief is that policy-makers are only concerned with the bottom 20% of students around the world, and that the top 10% are "being ignored."

Khim says her company's mission is to find "underserved" geniuses around the world, and help provide them with an education by introducing to top educators and educational institutions.

Brilliant is finding these kids with a website, Brilliant.org, where anyone can go and answer progressively more difficult math and science questions in weekly olympiad-style challenges.

So far, 70,000 people from 155 countries have taken part in Brilliant.org's contests.

Already, some incredible people have come to light.

We asked Brilliant.org to identify the 10 smartest kids it has ever encountered. Khim and her colleagues Bradan Litzinger and Molly Turner found nine, and included one more discovered through other channels. Brilliant then reached out to the parents of these children and got their permission to tell their stories.

Dylan Toh,12, of Singapore's abstract linear algebra skills are the envy of college students

Since a young age, Dylan Toh has had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge.

Bored with his school mathematics curriculum, Dylan scoured his local libraries for more challenging material.

The Singaporean Ministry of Education later approved him for acceleration in mathematics, matching him with a secondary school teacher to study material several grade levels above that of a typical 12-year old.

Toh found Brilliant.org while searching the internet for challenging math problems, and the organization was able to match him with another mentor at the University of Michigan.

During his mentor sessions with Farrell Wu, he studied abstract linear algebra and demonstrated abilities that would, according to his mentor, place him in the highest level of scholarship offers at top tier American universities.

His mentor was impressed with the clarity and organization of his solutions, saying, “most college students would envy Dylan’s ability to present his ideas.”

Toh is also training to participate in robotics, mathematics, and table tennis competitions in Singapore.

The Apple Pop-Up Museum is a small museum in Atlanta that's on a limited run of exhibitions.

The museum chronicles one of the world's most beloved companies from its humble beginnings in the Homebrew Computer Club to the consumer electronics powerhouse it is today.

The Apple pop up museum in Atlanta is run by Lonnie Mimms, a collector of computers since 1978. Mimms has never disposed of any of the computers he's bought over the years.

Along with his wife Ageneta Mimms and Swedish native Thereze Almström they curated the museum.

The museum houses Apple products from the original Apple I all the way to the iPad mini.

Apple fan and developer Don Synstelien got to tour the museum recently and shared his pictures with Business Insider

The pop up museum will be open again Saturday May 18th and Saturday June 8th from 10 am - 5 pm at the Kings Market Shipping Center, 1425 Market Boulevard, Suite #200, Rosewell, GA 30076.

DEATH OF THE COOKIE: How The Web's All-Seeing Tracking Device Could Meet Its End

$
0
0

Grim reaper death cookie

Cookies — the small pieces of code that websites drop onto your internet browser in order to track your activity, usually for advertisers — have gotten a bad rap recently.

Apple, Microsoft and Mozilla (which makes the Firefox browser) now all plan to launch browsers with default settings rigged to reject cookies or to signal that the user does not want to be tracked.

Go directly to the reasons cookies might die >

That's a threat to online advertising, which is largely dependent on cookies. Advertisers don't like launching ads without knowing what a web surfer wants to look at.

A huge business has grown up around cookie-based advertising: For instance, some analysts believe Facebook's cookie-based real-time bidding ad exchange, called FBX, could generate $1 billion or more in revenues.

But some in the business are talking about the death of the cookie. Paul Cimino, VP/GM Brilig Digital Data Solutions at Merkle, told AdExchanger recently that he gives cookies "five years at the most":

We've found that the third-party cookie is dying as the number of machines that you can see on the Internet versus the number that you can cookie has been dropping over the last three years. It’s now at around 50%.

Most experts believe the cookie is safe, for now.

But we decided to describe the potential scenarios that might, ultimately, lead to the death of the cookie — and the return of anonymity on the web.

First, let's define our terms. What exactly is a cookie?

As we already said, cookies are the small pieces of code that web sites drop onto your browser as you surf the web. They record what sites you've looked at.

If you've been shopping for shoes, you might start to see ads for shoes on the next web page you visit — because advertisers are targeting your cookies.

Cookies don't give away any personally identifying information about you.

But they might give advertisers an idea of what your interests are: you're shopping for shoes online, where you live, and what demographics you fit into.

When we talk about the "death of the cookie," we're really talking about is the death of the third-party cookie.

Almost every web site serves a cookie, especially if you have to log into it, like when you check your bank account.

The cookie reminds the bank's web site that you are logged in correctly. If it wasn't there, the web site would "forget" that you'd logged in and lock you out of your account.

Those are first-party cookies — cookies served by the page you're looking at right now. The web basically doesn't work without them.

Ad Agency Shows Off Bloody Showers And Men Getting Stuffed Down Toilets With New Google Street View Feature

Ideas by Music Google Street View

While some companies are using Google Business Photos' new feature (which allows people to pay to show office interiors on Google Street View) to boast open seating areas, cool bike racks, and office bars, some smart alecky ad agencies are taking it to the extreme.

If you choose to take an office tour of Manchester-based creative agency Ideas By Music, for example, you'll find a bloody shower, red drag marks in the hall, and then a man being pushed, head-first, down the toilet.

Although the shop's photos are clearly staged, it is creepily reminiscent of the speculated Dutch murder that was captured by Google Maps this month— showing a bloody body being dragged across a dock and into the water.

Ideas By Music isn't the only shop that's playing with the feature. Adviso, which is based in Montreal, took a lighter approach to Google Business Photos by introducing the world to a guy in a hot dog costume we're assuming regularly walks a wiener dog around the office.

Agencies are always looking for new ways to creatively interact with new online social platforms, so we all should have seen this one coming.

The Google Business Photos office tour of Manchester-based Ideas By Music begins boringly enough.

You can click through to see the reception area.

The Only Smartphones Worth Buying Right Now [RANKED] (VZ, T, DT, S)

$

htc one

As the spring smartphone release schedule winds down, you now have a ton of great choices.

Samsung, HTC, and BlackBerry all have brand new flagship devices worth considering. And there are plenty of other phones from late last year that still hold up pretty well.

Check out our list of the best smartphones you can buy, ranked in the order you should consider them.

Note: We update this list approximately once a month. Our rankings are based on a variety of factors including design, software and hardware features, content selection, and price. We only consider phones that are on sale in the US at the time of publication. You can see last month's smartphone rankings here.

#12 iPhone 4S

Even though it's well over a year old, the iPhone 4S is a great value for anyone looking for the iPhone experience at a good price.

The iPhone 4S has most of the same software features as the iPhone 5, but it is a bit thicker and has a smaller screen.

The downside is that the iPhone 4S can't access LTE data networks, the fastest wireless standard available.

Price: Starts at $99 with a two-year contract on most carriers, $69 down on T-Mobile. (Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, or AT&T)

#11 Samsung Galaxy S III

Even though the Galaxy S4 just launched, you can still buy last year's Galaxy S III from several carriers at a big discount.

The Galaxy S III is a great Android phone with a large, bright display. It also has some cool features that let you easily share photos and other content with other Samsung phones.

Click here for our full Samsung Galaxy S III review >

Price: Price varies by carrier, but you can get it for $99.99 with a two-year contract many places. (Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile)

#10 The BlackBerry Z10

BlackBerry's newest phone, the BlackBerry Z10, finally arrived in the US at the end of March. It's the first device to run the company's new mobile operating system called BlackBerry 10.

The Z10 is a solid piece of hardware, plus BlackBerry 10 is an impressive mobile operating system. Unfortunately, the phone has a pretty weak app selection compared to the iPhone and Android phones.

Click here for our review of the BlackBerry Z10 >

Price: $199.99 with a two-year contract from Verizon or AT&T. $99.99 plus $18 per month for 24 months on T-Mobile.

The Highest-Paid Player At Every Position In Major League Baseball

$

Derek Jeter 1999

It's no secret that most of the highest-paid athletes in North American sports are baseball players thanks to a lack of a salary cap.

Among baseball players, some positions are clearly more important than others.

Third-baseman Alex Rodriguez comes out on top, but catchers, pitchers, and first-basemen are close behind.

So far this season, however, some teams are not getting their money's worth for the guys collecting the biggest paychecks.

Catcher — Joe Mauer, $23.0 million

Team: Minnesota Twins

Contract: 8 years, $184 million (2011-18)

2013 stats: .289, 2 HR, 0.7 WAR

Next highest-paid at the position: Yadier Molina, $14.0 million (St. Louis Cardinals)

First Base — Prince Fielder, $23.0 million

Team: Detroit Tigers

Contract: 9 years, $214 million (2012-20)

2013 stats: .292, 6 HR, 0.3 WAR

Next highest-paid at the position: Mark Teixeira, $22.5 million (New York Yankees)

Second Base — Chase Utley and Robinson Cano, $15.0 million

Team: Philadelphia Phillies (Utley) and New York Yankees (Cano)

Contract: 7 years, $85 million (Utley; 2007-13) and  6 years, $57 million (Cano; 2008-13)

2013 stats: .295, 4 HR, 4 SB, 0.7 WAR (Utley) and .324, 7 HR, 1.3 WAR (Cano)

Next highest-paid at the position: Dan Uggla (Atlanta Braves) and Ian Kinsler (Texas Rangers), $13.0 million

11 Gorgeous Landscapes From 'Grand Theft Auto V'

GTA grand theft auto V five mountain landscape

Rockstar released new trailers for its upcoming video game "Grand Theft Auto V" earlier this week.

If you've taken a look, the most noticeable difference since 2008's "Grand Theft Auto IV" is the crisper, detailed graphics.

We're not surprised.

It's been a long five years since "GTA IV" which took place in a fictionalized New York City.

This time, the game will shift gears to the West coast's Los Santos, a modern-day version of Los Angeles.

While the game is available for pre-order, it won't hit store shelves until September 17.

Violence, guns, strippers, and car chases aside, the game setting looks gorgeous.

The fifth installment takes place in a fictionalized, modern-day Los Angeles.

The game world will be larger than previous Rockstar games "Red Dead Redemption,""Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas," and "Grand Theft Auto IV" combined.

(Source: Game Informer)

Rockstar founder Sam Houser announced it will be the most ambitious "Grand Theft Auto" to date with a reinvention of the universe.

These Are The Best And Worst Things To Buy In May

$
0
0

htc first cover feedThe Marketplace Fairness Act — which requires online retailers to collect state sales tax regardless of an operation's location — may finally come to pass this month, and consumers who have enjoyed scoring tax-free items via online shopping may be disappointed by the development.

But the way we see it, the new law just means shoppers will have to be all the more savvy with their purchases. To help out, we've mined the dealnews archives of products, sales, coupons, and daily deals to point out what items are great buys (and conversely, what items you should probably avoid) throughout the month of May.

Now's the time to hit up Memorial Day sales & coupons.

Often times, stores want you to believe that every holiday weekend will feature some of the deepest discounts of the season, but that isn't always the case.

However, as an almost-mid-year event, we've consistently found that Memorial Day promotions tend to boast some of the best sales since January.

Keep an eye out in particular for a plethora of stacking coupons that will make already-discounted goods even cheaper; often these sales are the largest in recent months. (For example, last year Calvin Klein took an extra 85% off sale items!) Look to your favorite apparelhome goods, and department stores for special holiday promotions.

Spring clothing deals heat up.

Late April was an excellent time to start shopping for spring clothing deals, but the discounts really heat up in May.

That's because current-season apparel has now been on the shelves for about two months, and in order to make way for summer styles, retailers will begin offering discounts that could take 50% to 75% off.

If you want a particularly large discount, try holding out until Memorial Day weekend for those aforementioned stacking coupons.

Now is not the time to stock up on gaming consoles.

It's presently a terrible time to buy a gaming console of any sort.

Both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are about to be updated, and even if you don't want the latest model, the current systems are bound to get cheaper this summer once the next-gen consoles are announced.

We wouldn't even recommend getting the super-cheap, Android-based OUYA because there are rumors that Microsoft is going to knock the price of the current Xbox down to $99, and the Xbox is a far more capable system. Gamers should undoubtedly sit tight until the gaming world settles after the Electronic Entertainment Expo in June before making any major purchases.

 No price has been released.

How To Look Dapper At Your Kentucky Derby Party

$

The 139th Kentucky Derby is this Saturday, and that means it's time to dust off your big sunhats and whip up some old-fashioned mint juleps.

And while most of us won't be in Louisville to celebrate the great American tradition, that doesn't mean you can't throw your own Derby party — or dress for the occasion.

Here are some of our favorite men's Derby looks.

First, start with a classic seersucker or linen suit. Both fabrics are lightweight and provide a casually rumpled look. The Brooks Brothers Great Gatsby collection features a white linen suit ($698), and the J.Crew Ludlow suit jacket ($298) has a tailored fit and light blue seersucker pattern.

linen and searsucker suits derby style

Pair your suit with a crisp white shirt, like this one from Gap ($50). You could also throw on a pastel-colored button down if you're feeling flashy, like the lilac Thomas Pink option from Nordstrom ($185) or the Hugo Boss 'EatonX' in light blue ($115).

pastel button downs derby

Add a colorful bow tie and pocket square to complete the preppy theme. This Drake's paisley-pattern tie from MR PORTER ($155) would work well with one of the Macy's Club Room pocket squares ($15).

tie pocket square derby fashion

A straw hat takes your style back to the 1920s, and will blend in with all of the women's sunhats. These are two options from the Brooks Brothers Gatsby Collection ($198).

And finally lace up in some two-tone wing tips like the Ralph Lauren shoes on the left ($1,350), or with boat shoes like the Neiman Marcus version ($325) on the right.

CITI: These 10 Technologies Are Completely Changing The Way The World Does Business

$

blu electronic cigarette

In a massive new research report, analysts at investment bank Citi take a close look at 10 technologies they say will disrupt the way we do business.

They've dipped into practically every sector you can think of: energy, entertainment, IT, manufacturing, and transportation among them.

Some of these technologies have been with us for awhile, but are poised to get better or cheaper.

Others have only recently surfaced, but will be ubiquitous in a matter of years.

This is what they say the future is going to look like.

Disruption 1: 3-D Printing

Printing parts and materials practically at your desktop. Thanks to falling commodity prices, easier to use software, and more complex design capabilities, the technology is poised to explode. In the future, 50% of parts used in a jet engine could be manufactured by 3D printers.

Source: Citi

The 3-D printing market could nearly double by 2019.

The 3-D printing market could grow to $6.5 billion by 2019 from less than $3.5 billion today, according to Wohlers Associates. The aerospace, orthopedic, and other high value, low volume industries will be the earliest adopters.

Source: Citi

Disruption 2: E-cigarettes

Battery-powered smokes that are ostensibly less toxic than regular cigarettes. They also currently allow you to smoke in places where regular cigarettes are barred. They come in both disposable and reusable form.

See How Maker's Mark Crafts Its Beloved Bourbon [PHOTOS]

maker's mark distillery dipping red waxDisclosure: Maker's Mark paid for our travel and expenses to visit the distillery outside of Louisville, Ky.

The Kentucky Derby is right around the corner, and people everywhere will be celebrating Derby Day with a glass of bourbon or a bourbon-based cocktail.

Last year, we visited the Maker's Mark distillery outside Louisville, Ky., to find out how bourbon is made.

The distillery uses a lot of the same machinery from when it sold its first bottle back in 1956. The recipe is also the same  customers revolted when the company said it would lower the amount of alcohol in its liquor earlier this year, and it reversed course.

Greg Davis, the master distiller who oversees everything related to the production of whisky, gave us the complete rundown on how Maker's Mark is produced, from the locally sourced corn and soft red winter wheat to the charring of the white oak barrels where the whisky ages.

Welcome to Maker's Mark. The distillery is in Loretto, Kentucky, about an hour and a half from Louisville and the same distance from Lexington.

The property was once the site of Burks' Distillery, which Bill Samuels Sr. bought in 1954. The business soon became a family affair, with Samuels' wife Marge baking breads to test various grain combinations used in whisky and developing the signature packaging.

Bill Jr., an engineer, eventually joined the family business after working as a rocket scientist. An engineer with a sense of humor, he designed this covered footbridge without a single right angle, according to Master Distiller Greg Davis.

15 Etiquette Rules For Dining At Fancy Restaurants

l'apicio restaurant waiter

Some restaurant etiquette is just common sense: Don't speak when your mouth is full, don't tell rude jokes during the meal, and always cover your mouth when you cough.

Others can be a bit more nuanced. Who pays after a business meal? Where do you put your napkin when you stand? And how exactly does one order the perfect bottle of wine?

We spoke with expert Patricia Napier-Fitzpatrick of The Etiquette School of New York. She not only makes a living teaching people the nuances of decorum, but has even written the book, "The Art of the Meal: Simple Etiquette for Simply Everyone."

She shared some guidelines for dining at expensive restaurants.

DO always dress nicely.

"I still believe men should wear jackets to dinner, if not a suit," Napier-Fitzpatrick said. "If a man is dining with clients — and especially clients from other countries which tend to be more formal — they should wear a jacket and a tie."

"Women should be wearing a dress or suit, and shoes instead of sandals."

DON'T put your cell phone, keys, or purse on the table.

It's just common sense. It distracts not only your other dining companions, but also your waiter and the entire restaurant.

DO let your guest order first.

"The host, especially if it's a woman, has to make it clear that he or she is the host," Napier-Fitzpatrick told us.

"Say phrases like, 'Will you please bring my guest...' or 'My guest would like to order first' to ward off confusion."

Barbie

We recently brought you a set of images showing what Barbie and other dolls would look like without the makeup that Mattel paints on their faces.

Illustrator Nikolay Lamm has now taken his investigation of Barbie's unlikely physical appearance a step further.

He extrapolated Barbie's body size, if she were human, and compared it side-by-side with the average body proportions of a 19-year-old American.

"I feel that this is as close as you can get to a real life representation of a Barbie-proportioned woman standing next to an average sized woman," he tells us.

The average 19-year-old woman was modeled using these measurements, as described by the CDC:

  • 64.29″ height
  • 33.62″ waist
  • 140.09″ upper arm length
  • 14.45″ upper leg length
  • 20″ head circumference
  • 15″ neck circumference

Barbie, at 1/6 scale, would have the following measurements, Lamm believes:

  • 69″ height

  • 36″ bust

  • 18″ waist

  • 33″ hips
  •
22″ head circumference
  •
9″ neck circumference

As Lamm maps Barbie next to an average person, the differences become obvious quickly.

Barbie is huge! She is 5 inches taller than the average young woman.

Barbie isn't just a thin woman — her waist is almost half the size of an average woman's, just 18 inches.
