10 ways for guys to instantly become more attractive

$

Ryan Gosling

Quick fixes get a bad name, and sometimes improvement does take patience. That being said, there are still plenty of ways you can improve yourself that don't require a five year plan.

As Mr Churchill once wisely said, "To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often."

Touché, old guy.

1. Work from the ground up

The old adage about your shoes being the first thing people notice about you isn't changing any time soon. Luckily, footwear options are more flexible than they've ever been, so there's really no excuse not to be rocking something good on your feet.

Need some inspiration? Look no further than our latest round-up of recent releases.

2. Manspread (yes, really)

Widely derided as one of the most heinous crimes of the 21st Century, "manspreading" is a term used to call out men who take up too much space on public transport. We're certainly not advocating crushing anyone on the Central line with your strapping thighs, but it turns out there are some merits to "space maximisation".

Research has found that men are more successful at flirting when they take up more space with their body (stretching, extending arms, wide-legged stances etc) rather than adopting inward and closed body language. Just don't come crashing into the pub arms out like a human air-glider.

3. Spruce up your scent

'Body odour = bad' is not the sort of genius insight we're looking to offer you here, but are you aware how much of an advantage smelling really good can be? Research published earlier this year found that your voice and scent play crucial roles in how attractive people find you, not just your looks.

Handily, we've rounded up the best summer scents that will last much longer than the good weather.

Inside the lavish private club for New York City's creative elite

Alan Linn Norwood Club

There are few things more exclusive than a private club.

After years of working within the members-only club scene in London, Alan Linn saw a space in the market for a club that catered specifically to New York City's abundant creative community.

In 2007 he came to the US and opened Norwood, a now-bustling five-story club with more than 1,000 members ranging from 21 to 80 years old. Its ranks include architects, fashion designers, musicians, media moguls, and art collectors.

Linn's number-one tip for making it through the selection process is simple: "Be curious."

We talked to Linn about the history of Norwood, and what it's like to be a part of one of New York's top creative communities.

SEE ALSO: We went to New York City's most expensive neighborhood — home to Wall Streeters and celebrities like Taylor Swift — and saw why it's so popular

The club is located in an unassuming brownstone near the corner of West 14th Street and 8th Avenue in Manhattan. Built in 1874 by Andrew S. Norwood, the building was, at the time, an extravagant mansion with a total 13 fireplaces, mahogany doors, and intricate plaster crown molding.

To be accepted to the club, you must prove your involvement with the creative arts, and go through an extensive hour-long interview, which gets reported to the board of directors. "It's as much as what are we going to get out of them as members, as what are they going to get out of us," Linn said. There's a $800 membership joining fee, and an annual fee of $2,200 a year — or $1,250 if you're under 30.

"When we take on new members, it’s not always about everyone knowing everyone," Linn said. "It's about creating an alchemy, so to speak. It's nice to combine various professions and backgrounds at one dinner table."

napa sonoma santa rosa fire wildfire 2017

California wildfires have created apocalyptic scenes in wine country, where firefighters were still battling blazes on Wednesday morning. Two of the largest fires were 0% contained.

A series of massive wildfires spread through the counties of Napa, Sonoma, and at least six others early this week, destroying at least 2,000 homes, businesses, and other structures, and sending residents fleeing for their lives in the middle of the night. Strong, dry winds continue to hamper firefighters' efforts.

At least 21 people are dead, and another 180 people are reported missing in Sonoma County alone. Local officials describe the death toll as a "fluid number," as law enforcement officers uncover human remains in the rubble. The situation is considered one of the deadliest fires in state history.

An inferno called the Tubbs Fire has burned more than 27,000 acres in and around the city of Santa Rosa, according to the Cal Fire website. The Atlas Fire in Napa has charred an additional 25,000 acres. Residents and public officials won't know the full extent of the damage until evacuation orders have been lifted.

These photos show the devastating impact of the fires.

We will continue to update this story throughout the day.

These 5 fast-food chains will dominate the restaurant industry

Starbucks

The restaurant industry is increasingly competitive — and tapping into the next generation is crucial for chains' survival.

Failing to capture millennials' interest has led to slumping sales and restaurant closures at sit-down chains such as Applebee's.

However, according to Piper Jaffray's biannual survey of teen preferences, some casual-dining chains may be staging a comeback. Despite millennials' adoration of quick-service chains like McDonald's, Starbucks, and Chipotle, some full-service brands are winning over their hearts — and wallets.

With 22% of upper-income teens' spending dedicated to restaurants, the Gen Z or millennial diner is a valuable customer.

Here are the top five restaurants among teens, according to Piper Jaffray's survey.

SEE ALSO: The 20 best chain restaurants in America

5. Buffalo Wild Wings

Buffalo Wild Wings has had a difficult 2017.

In July, the chain had to swap a popular wings deal with a boneless wings promotion as chicken prices hit historic highs. In June, CEO Sally Smith announced she was leaving the company after an activist investor triumphed in a monthslong battle for the wings chain's board.

More generally, the chain has struggled to grow sales as the casual-dining industry has entered a slump.

But, teen support for the chain could be crucial to turning things around. Teen customers spent an average of $18.14 at the chain — a higher check than any other brand in teens' top five.

4. Olive Garden

Olive Garden is bucking the anti-casual-dining trend among millennials.

The chain has made headlines recently with promotions such as the never-ending pasta pass. In September, Olive Garden sold all 22,000 never-ending pasta passes mere seconds after they went on sale on the chain's website.

"Millennials still want to come to restaurants," Gene Lee, Darden Restaurants' CEO, said in a call with investors in June. "I know you all don't think millennials go to casual dining restaurants, but 30% of all our guests are millennials."

3. McDonald's

Teens continue to love the fast-food behemoth.

McDonald's has kept things fresh with updated kids' menus and new menu items like the Buttermilk Crispy Tenders.

The chain is also exploring delivery, which is available at more than 7,800 restaurants in 47 countries. While the fast-food chain only started offering delivery in the US through an UberEats partnership in January, the service is now available at more than 25% of US locations.

'FIFA 18' has 4 major changes that makes it the best FIFA game yet

$

fifa 18 ronaldo

Last year's "FIFA 17" wasn't that great because games too often were low-scoring or scoreless.

"FIFA 18" is much better.

There are four major improvements that make the game a lot more enjoyable and exciting. It's also a sign that EA, the game's developer, is consciously fixing some of the more frustrating elements of the game.

That said, there are still a few things about the game that drive me insane. Most long-time "FIFA" players have simply learned to cope with these things, as they've been part of the game for so long.

Take a look:

SEE ALSO: The hottest game of 2017 might not show up on PlayStation 4 until mid-2018 — or later

Finally, high-scoring games.

You can finally get nail-biting, high-scoring games in "FIFA 18," as it's much easier to score goals than it was in last year's "FIFA 17." And that goes for both you and the opposition.

I realize that not everyone had difficulty scoring in "FIFA 17," but it just wasn't happening for me. Sure, I'm not the greatest player in the world, but I've played previous versions of the game and I didn't have nearly as many issues scoring.

YouTube/EA Sports

Part of the reason why it's easier to score for both you and the opposition is that tackling is much harder in "FIFA 18." Indeed, it's much harder for me to defend against an attack, and vice versa for the opposition. EA, the developer behind the "FIFA" franchise, balanced both the tackling difficulty and the ability to score goals beautifully in this year's iteration.

Players are more responsive thanks to a major change.

EA has made it much easier and better to dribble in "FIFA 18" by making the animations "frame-by-frame." This makes players feel less like they have to complete a whole animation after you've made a move or pressed a button.

It gives you a lot more control when you're using the left controller stick to move. Movements are a lot more responsive and light compared to the heavy and clunky movements in previous versions of the game.

YouTube/IGN

That said, the frame-by-frame gameplay in "FIFA 18" doesn't seem to work for tackling. It still feels like I'm waiting for my player to complete an entire animation when I press the tackle button. It's most noticeable if I've made an unsuccessful tackle, where my player lunges in for the tackle, then he takes a moment to recompose himself, and then finally starts running again.

You can substitute players a lot more quickly, which is incredibly meaningful when you're playing with friends or online.

In "FIFA 18," EA introduced Live Substitutions during a break in the game, like when the ball goes out of play, which allows for making quick substitutions without interrupting the game or making your friend wait.

The game does a good job of automatically suggesting which players should be subbed in and out, and you can also pre-set which players you'll want to substitute before the start of a match. You can see the Live Substitution menu appear on the bottom left of the screen when it's available.

YouTube/IGN

Playing "FIFA" with friends is the best way to play the game, but making substitutions has always been a game-stunting thing, as you have to pause the game and switch out players in the substitution menu. It's not a problem when you're playing single-player Career Mode, as you don't care if the computer has to wait for you to make substitutions. But it used to interrupt the flow of a game with friends, especially if they don't want to make substitutions at the same times as you.

10 'Walking Dead' actors you need to follow on social media

Warning: There are some spoilers ahead for AMC's "The Walking Dead."

The "Walking Dead" gang lives day to day trying to get by in the zombie apocalypse. But when they're not fighting the dead or Negan's Saviors, many of the cast share photos with each other hanging out and behind-the-scenes shots from the set. Some of them even live tweet when a new episode airs.

If you're watching the dead, make sure to follow all of these people to get the most out of the show.

If you're following anyone, make sure its Chandler Riggs who has grown up on the show playing Rick Grimes' feisty son Carl.

Unlike his serious mini-soldier persona, Riggs is pretty unfiltered and funny on Twitter. He's not afraid to let you know what he thinks during a rewatch of the show, throughout the live show, and will call out AMC when they make a mistake in a "Walking Dead" tweet. He also shares details from when he's off set, in school, and getting ready for college.

Norman Reedus plays fan favorite Daryl Dixon on the show and you never know what you're going to get from his Instagram.

Instagram Embed:

Width: 800px

Reedus' shares range from sweet throwbacks with fellow "Walking Dead" castmembers to funny and bizarrememe-worthy videos without context.

The photo above shows Daryl and Rick as Robin and Batman. Here's a recent one of Daryl's head on the terrifying clown from "It." Apologies in advance for the nightmares.

Fair warning, some of his Instagrams are NSFW. You can follow him on Instagram here.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan may play Negan, the most hated villain on the show right now, but the cast loves taking selfies with him.

Morgan is especially good buddies with Norman Reedus even though Reedus' character Daryl wants nothing to do with Negan. At New York Comic Con's press conference, the two were seated next to each other and Morgan had his arm around his pal and poked fun at Reedus for using the word "besties" at one point (though it wasn't in reference to the pair).

We're waiting for more photos of this budding bromance when the new season launches on AMC. Follow him on Instagram here and Twitter here. He shares a myriad of different photos across the two and will tweet about the show.

Meet the women under 40 unlocking new ways to treat diseases and shaping the future of medicine

Women in biotech

It's still relatively uncommon to see female leaders in the biotech and pharmaceutical industries.

In biotech, it's estimated that only about 7-9% of chief executive roles are filled by women. It's not an issue that's unique to drugmakers: Among the Fortune 500, 6.4% were led by female CEOs.

But among the generation of leaders under 40, there are a number of women who are building companies, unlocking new ways to treat cancer, and harnessing revolutionary gene-editing tools.

Business Insider initially came up with a list of 30 leaders, through nominations and past coverage, who are shaping the future of medicine. Of that list, half were women. We asked them what the contribution the under-40 generation would have on medicine.

Here's who's doing groundbreaking work as young female leaders under 40 in biopharma, listed alphabetically.

Narges Bani Asadi, 36, wants to make human-genome analysis more useful to people.

Narges Bani Asadi, the vice president and Life Cycle Leader of sequencing genomics at Roche Sequencing Informatics, grew up in Iran before moving to Stanford University for graduate school. While pursuing a master's and later a Ph.D. in electrical engineering, she met a mentor who explained to her a future in which biology and medicine is more about data than a biology or chemistry lab problem. "It blew my mind," she said.

From there, she started working at that intersection between computer science and medicine, launching a startup called Bina that was later acquired by Roche. The company worked to find clinical applications for genomic data, so that the findings that come out of academic researchers make it to patients.

"How can that actually change medicine? That's the bottleneck today," she said. "What is the clinical utility of this information?"

The contribution the under-40 generation will have on medicine: It will be getting more nontraditional, and possibly even younger people into the industry that come from different backgrounds and expertise areas, Bani Asadi said.

Stephanie Barrett, 36, is building implantable devices to help treat HIV and other infectious diseases.

Stephanie Barrett, a principal scientist at Merck, is working to make implantable devices to treat infectious diseases. Originally from Canada, Barrett moved to the US in 2004 to get her Ph.D. in chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Shortly after completing her graduate work, she joined Merck.

Right now, treatments for diseases such as HIV and hepatitis are taken via pills. Merck's hope is that by building an implanted device, people will do better on the medications because they will actually adhere to them. Adherence is key when you're thinking about infectious diseases like HIV where you need low viral counts.

The contribution the under-40 generation will have on medicine: The energy and "hungriness" this generation will have will propel things forward, Barrett said.

Viki Bockstal, 32, is developing vaccines to prevent HIV and Ebola.

Viki Bockstal, the biomarker lead for filovirus vaccines at Johnson & Johnson's Janssen Vaccines, helps develop vaccines to prevent hard-to-treat conditions, including HIV, polio, and Ebola. She joined Janssen in 2012 after receiving her Ph.D. in bioengineering sciences at Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

Her job is to help Janssen's Ebola vaccine keep moving through clinical trials, a process that can be difficult when there isn't an Ebola outbreak. In the absence of that, Bockstal determines the parameters that help determine whether the vaccine is effective or not.

The contribution the under-40 generation will have on medicine: Bockstal said it will be by finding vaccines or cures for some of the infectious diseases and conditions that have so far evaded our grasp, such as Ebola, HIV and cancer. "I truly believe this generation has the best shot at not only making this happen, but also really eradicating diseases such as AIDS, measles, polio, tuberculosis, and malaria," Bockstal said.

That's according to U.S. News & World Report, whose latest study ranked the top states for folks 65 and older.

In 2016, Americans older than 65 accounted for about 15% of the total US population.

By 2050, that share is expected to grow to 20%, thanks to increased life expectancy and population growth, and states are being forced to adapt programs that cater to the senior population.

To find out which states are prioritizing the needs of residents over 65, U.S. News evaluated a dozen different metrics, including life expectancy, physical and mental health, cost of living, and the cost and quality of medicare and nursing homes.

Below are the top nine US states for aging, according to U.S. News. States are scored relative to each other across 12 factors that average into one overall score. For each state, we've included individual scores for cost of living, life expectancy, positive mental health, and overall quality of health.

What 33 Hollywood stars have said about the Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment and assault allegations

Hollywood is condemning producer Harvey Weinstein after the New York Times and The New Yorker both published reports detailing sexual harassment and assault allegations against the producer.

Despite an initial lull in response, statements from actors, directors, and politicians have begun to spring forth to slam the producer, and offer support to his accusers.

Actors who once praised Weinstein, like Ben Affleck, Meryl Streep, and Jennifer Lawrence, have lambasted the producer since the allegations surfaced.

Statements are continuing to come forth, and it's becoming quite clear that Hollywood is done with Weinstein.

Here are some of the big statements from those who have spoken out about Weinstein:

SEE ALSO: 12 famous actors who have publicly praised and thanked Harvey Weinstein, and what they are saying now

Meryl Streep

In a statement to HuffPost Meryl Streep said:

The disgraceful news about Harvey Weinstein has appalled those of us whose work he championed, and those whose good and worthy causes he supported. The intrepid women who raised their voices to expose this abuse are our heroes.

One thing can be clarified. Not everybody knew. Harvey supported the work fiercely, was exasperating but respectful with me in our working relationship, and with many others with whom he worked professionally. I didn’t know about these other offenses: I did not know about his financial settlements with actresses and colleagues; I did not know about his having meetings in his hotel room, his bathroom, or other inappropriate, coercive acts. And If everybody knew, I don’t believe that all the investigative reporters in the entertainment and the hard news media would have neglected for decades to write about it.

The behavior is inexcusable, but the abuse of power familiar. Each brave voice that is raised, heard and credited by our watchdog media will ultimately change the game.

Kate Winslet

In a statement to Variety, Winslet said:

The fact that these women are starting to speak out about the gross misconduct of one of our most important and well regarded film producers, is incredibly brave and has been deeply shocking to hear. The way Harvey Weinstein has treated these vulnerable, talented young women is NOT the way women should ever EVER deem to be acceptable or commonplace in ANY workplace.

I have no doubt that for these women this time has been, and continues to be extremely traumatic. I fully embrace and salute their profound courage, and I unequivocally support this level of very necessary exposure of someone who has behaved in reprehensible and disgusting ways. His behaviour is without question disgraceful and appalling and very, very wrong. I had hoped that these kind of stories were just made up rumours, maybe we have all been naïve. And it makes me so angry. There must be ‘no tolerance’ of this degrading, vile treatment of women in ANY workplace anywhere in the world.

Jennifer Lawrence

“I was deeply disturbed to hear the news about Harvey Weinstein’s behavior,” Jennifer Lawrence said in a statement to Variety.

“I worked with Harvey five years ago and I did not experience any form of harassment personally, nor did I know about any of these allegations. This kind of abuse is inexcusable and absolutely upsetting,” Lawrence said.

The actress added, “My heart goes out to all of the women affected by these gross actions. And I want to thank them for their bravery to come forward.”

NFL POWER RANKINGS: Where all 32 teams stand going into Week 6

$

Eagles Wk 6

Five weeks into the NFL season, one of the biggest storylines, sadly, has been injuries.

Week 5 brought more devastation as the New York Giants lost several players, including Odell Beckham Jr., and the Houston Texans lost J.J. Watt.

Another storyline this season has also been exactly what the NFL likes: parity. The Kansas City Chiefs are red hot, but after them, it is a jumble of 4-1, 3-2, and 2-3 teams that seem capable of winning on any given week.

As we head into Week 6, we hope for more answers about who is a contender and who is a pretender. Take a look at where every team stand right now below:

32. Cleveland Browns

Record: 0-5

Last week: Lost to the Jets 17-14

This week: at Houston Texans

One thing to know: After another poor start in their fifth game of the season, the Browns benched rookie DeShone Kizer at halftime against the Jets with backup Kevin Hogan. Cleveland will be sticking with Hogan for their game this week against the Texans.

31. New York Giants

Record: 0-5

Last week: Lost to the Chargers 27-22

This week: at Denver Broncos

One thing to know: The Giants saw whatever was left of their season end in brutal fashion in Week 5. Sterling Shephard, Brandon Marshall, and Dwayne Harris all left the game with injuries. Then Odell Beckham Jr. fractured his ankle in gruesome fashion, ending his season. Moments later, Eli Manning was strip-sacked, and the Chargers scored a game-winning touchdown to push the Giants to 0-5.

30. San Francisco 49ers

Record: 0-5

Last week: Lost to the Colts 26-23

This week: at Washington Redskins

One thing to know: San Francisco has lost their previous four games by a combined 11 points. So while they're postseason dreams for this year are already over, there's at least the chance that they'll have something to build on come 2018 if they can turn these close games around.

Rising sea levels, coastal flooding, and biodiversity loss are stark realities for many cities across the United States.

By 2100, there is a 90% chance that global mean sea levels will rise anywhere from eight inches to 6.6 feet, according to a recent National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration report. As the world becomes more urbanized, cities can lose wetlands (which protect against flooding), trees (which fight CO2), and native flora and fauna.

Landscape architect Kate Orff, founder of the urban design firm Scape Studio, aims to address those issues in her work. She is a 2017 recipient of the MacArthur fellowship, also known as the "genius grant," announced on October 11. Every year, the John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation awards $625,000 each, paid over five years, to people who "have shown extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative pursuits and a marked capacity for self-direction."

Orff's projects focus on finding practical solutions to ecological problems facing cities. Check out some of her most fascinating ones below.

Orff and her firm Scape Studio arre known for designing green spaces for urban places. Most of their projects center in New York City, but they also work across the US and abroad.

In 2011, she gave a TED Talk about Scape's Oyster-tecture proposal, an active oyster reef that could promote biodiversity and protect low-lying areas from sea level rise in the New York Harbor. Each oyster would filter up to 50 gallons of water per day, removing nitrogen, algae, and other pollutants.

The Gowanus Lowlands project proposes transforming a Brooklyn neighborhood, known for its federal Superfund site, into a thriving park with vegetable gardens. The design was unveiled in summer 2017.

The Blue Wall Center — completed in 2010 outside Cleveland, South Carolina — transformed a former 165-acre camp site into a visitor's center, where people can learn about the surrounding ecosystem.

Mong Kok District — Hong Kong, China

Oxford Street — London, UK

On TripAdvisor, more than 400 reviews mentioned London's Oxford Street as being extremely crowded.

"Get ready for crowds, that's the only drawback to shopping/walking here," one person commented. "If you can cope with battling your way through crowds, though, it's a great street for shopping and probably the one most people will recommend going to if you're visiting London for the first time," another person wrote.

With that in mind, it makes sense that the mayor of London announced that by 2020 Oxford Street will be entirely pedestrian, with no buses, taxis, or vehicle traffic, according to the BBC

3 reasons to retire in a city

$

old people the golden years

Many workers imagine themselves retiring and living along sandy beaches, or in quiet, wooded areas offering optimal peace and quiet. Others, meanwhile, dream of retiring in cities and enjoying the vibrancy that tends to come along with them. If you're still on the fence about where to retire, here are a few good reasons to consider settling down in a city.

1. Lower transportation costs

It costs $8,700 a year, or $725 a month, to own a vehicle, according to AAA, and that's just an average. Given that seniors are often subject to higher insurance premiums, and that cars tend to require more maintenance as they age, if you're planning to retire someplace where you're reliant on your own car to get around, it could end up putting a strain on your limited retirement budget.

That's why it often pays to retire in a city with public transportation. If you're able to make good use of a bus or subway system, you stand to save a bundle at a time in your life when you could most likely use the money.

As an example, it costs more to commute via public transportation in Washington, D.C., than any other major city in the country -- but even then, you're looking at spending $237 a month, as opposed to the $725 you'd spend on your own vehicle. That's over $5,800 a year in savings.

Another thing to consider is that as you age, your driving abilities might decline. Living in a city with public transportation could therefore take a huge amount of stress out of the equation and help you get around safely.

2. Access to quality healthcare

Healthcare is a major concern for seniors, not to mention a major expense. It therefore stands to reason that the more options you have for medical care nearby, the easier it'll be to manage not only your health, but your costs. And that's where city living can really be advantageous.

In a recent Welltower report, baby boomers ranked access to healthcare as their single greatest priority when considering where they'd want to live at age 80 or older. And while it's certainly possible to find high-quality hospitals in suburban and even rural areas, larger cities often boast the most state-of-the-art facilities. In fact, of the top-ranked hospitals in the country by U.S. News and World Report, the 20 facilities with the highest scores were all located in cities, including major ones such as New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.

3. More options for entertainment

Though countless workers look forward to retirement, it also increases the likelihood of suffering from clinical depression by 40%, and a big part of that boils down to boredom. That's why living in a city can be a positive thing for seniors with an abundance of free time on their hands. From museums to restaurants to nightlife, cities are known to offer a host of entertainment options that suburbs and rural areas typically can't match. Better yet, much of that entertainment can be had for free (think no-cost concerts in the park and so forth).
