Here's how Halloween is celebrated around the world

el salvador halloween festival

  • In the US, costumes and trick-or-treating sum up the Halloween experience.
  • But in other parts of the world, Halloween celebrations range from cemetery gatherings to buffalo-racing.
  • The Festival of Cows in Nepal is a carnival that celebrates the dead.
  • Meanwhile, the Festival of the Hungry Ghosts is an ancient Chinese tradition that includes lighting lanterns and going to the opera.
  • Here's how other countries celebrate the spookiest holiday of the year.

Dressing up as a ghost, ghoul, fantasy figure or celebrity and kids trick-or-treating is the American idea of Halloween. But its somber roots are in its very name: originally All Hallows’ Eve, it was the night before All Saints' Day, followed by All Souls Day, both honoring the dead. But Halloween is just one of many festivals to remember the dead worldwide, whose events range from lantern-lighting and partying in cemeteries to buffalo-racing.

Barriletes Gigantes

Flying gigantic kites at cemeteries is how the towns of Sumpango and Santiago Sacatepequez celebrate All Saints Day in Guatemala. The kites are usually round, often 40 or more feet wide, and intensely colorful, painted with flowers, animals, and geometric patterns like the country's Mayan textiles. The kites are hand-made from paper and cloth with bamboo frames by villagers. It's believed the higher the kites fly, the closer their messages are to reaching the dead in heaven. The 3,000-year-old Mayan tradition began long before the Spanish brought Catholicism to Guatemala.

Banks of the Foyle Halloween Carnival

Ireland is where Halloween was born as the Celtic festival of Samhain, when ghosts walked among the living. Traditions abound, like bonfires and eating barmbrack, a fruitcake whose contents can tell your fortune. Find a ring, and you'll be married within a year; a thimble, and singlehood is in your future; a stick, and lots of travel is in your future (we can help). So it's fitting Europe's biggest Halloween costume parade is in Derry (Londonderry) in Northern Ireland, next to County Donegal. Derry's 400-year-old, 18-foot-high walls are the site of ghastly performances, installations, lights, and music from October 27-30, and a parade of circus and street performers and costumed revelers walk the streets on October 31, topped off by fireworks.

O-Bon

For this three-day Lantern Festival in August, people light lanterns in their homes to welcome the souls of their ancestors to earth, and place lanterns on rivers or ponds to guide them back on the final day. In Kyoto, the best place to see the magic of glowing colorful lanterns at night on the water is the Arashimaya district, full of temples and gardens. Bonfires are lit on five mountains that tower over Kyoto to guide the souls and defend against evil, a tradition dating to the 13th century: three fires shaped like Chinese characters used in Japanese writing, one shaped like a Shinto shrine gate, and one in the shape of a boat.  Almost 10,000 lanterns with wishes tucked inside are set afloat, as monks chant, in Eihei-ji in Fukui prefecture.

Traditional dancing in kimonos and wooden sandals also takes place in Gujo city and Tokushima city. Fruit and vegetable offerings are left at Buddhist temples, where a fire is lit at the gates at the start and end of O-Bon.

Google’s new cases for its Pixel 2 phone put Apple’s iPhone cases to shame (GOOG, GOOGL)

Pixel 2 cases

The Google Pixel 2 has a lot of great features. It's waterproof, the camera is fantastic, and it runs a simple, easy-to-use version of Android.

But one of the things I like most about the Pixel 2 has nothing to do with the phone itself, but rather with the new phone cases.

Of course, case options are not a good enough reason to buy a phone. There are hundreds of thousands of companies that make cases, and chances are you can find something you like from a third party.

Still, there's something comforting about buying a case from the company that made your smartphone. Apple's cases are great looking, and iPhone users swear by them. Let's face it: if you're shelling out for an expensive smartphone, you should probably put a case on it.

When Business Insider received the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL to test out, I was delighted by the cases that came along with them. I decided to see what else Google had to offer for its Pixel customers, and it didn't disappoint.

Take a look:

Here are the new fabric cases for Pixel 2 phones. I've been using the black version — called carbon — for about a week, and I'm a fan. It makes the phone feel more durable and easier to grip, plus it's stylish. The fabric case also comes in cement, midnight, and coral.

Google likes to tout its live cases, which are customizable and have corresponding interactive phone wallpapers. There are three themes — photos, artwork, and places — and they're available for all Pixel phones, including the first-generation models.

Inside the dark, fantasy world of millionaire 'whales' at casinos, who receive ridiculous perks and are under harsh scrutiny since the Las Vegas shooting

Bellagio Las Vegas high roller casino

The life of a Las Vegas high roller is the stuff of fantasy, with things like penthouse suites, gourmet meals, and VIP concerts — and most of it doesn't even come out of gamblers' pockets.

It's in casinos' best interests to persuade gamblers to come back again and again and to stay as long as possible — often in the resort attached to the casino — so they roll out the red carpet and pile on the perks.

However, in the wake of the Las Vegas shooting earlier this month, questions have been raised about whether these perks could be abused. The gunman, Stephen Paddock, reportedly had high-roller status in at least one Las Vegas casino.

Here's a look into the lives of high rollers — and what these perks involve.

The most high-profile high rollers in the world of gambling are called "whales," people who regularly wager thousands or millions of dollars in a single night.

While poker players have the leading role in most high-roller legends, baccarat is the game of choice for most whales, says Shaun Kelley, a research analyst at Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

Whales might wager $5 million in one night — so casinos want to persuade them to visit as much as possible.

RANKED: The 15 best Stephen King adaptations you need to watch

$
0
0

pennywise it clown

Hollywood loves adapting Stephen King stories.

He has a knack for crafting simple premises — what if you woke up and had psychic powers? What if your car had a mind of its own? — and taking them horrifying places.

Not all of them are worth watching, as Will Leitch and Tim Grierson wrote in their definitive ranking of 40 Stephen King movie adaptations for Vulture. But some of them rank among the best works Hollywood has ever produced.

This year is shaping up to be one of King's signature years. His "It" was recently adapted into an acclaimed horror movie. "The Dark Tower" was adapted into a, let's say, less-than-acclaimed one. "Mr. Mercedes" just ended a single-season run on the Audience network. Hulu will air a "Castle Rock" anthology series sometime early next year. Netflix recently released a well-reviewed adaptation of "Gerald's Game" and, on October 20, it will release an adaptation of his novella "1922."

Oh — and he writes, too! In fact, he just released a novel written with his son Owen, called "Sleeping Beauties." His other son, who writes under the pen name Joe Hill, is also a much-loved horror novelist.

With everything King has going on, it's a good time to dive into the movies and TV shows based on his work.

See below for our picks for the 15 best TV and movie adaptations based on King's work.

15. "Under the Dome" (2013-2015)

After "The Stand" (a movie adaptation is in development hell; the TV adaptation hasn't aged well) and "It," King's novel "Under the Dome" is his longest. It was adapted into a TV show over three seasons on CBS. The enthusiasm from critics waned as the season went on, but the first incredible season alone makes it worth the watch.

14. "The Mist" (2007)

When it was announced that Frank Darabont planned to direct another Stephen King adaptation, fans freaked out. His "Shawshank Redemption"ranks among the most beloved movies ever made, and "The Green Mile" has its fans as well. A movie about a creepy mist that attacks a small town would be a new challenge.

"The Mist" proved itself a love-it-or-hate-it movie. Itc split fans and critics, with a 72% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Some were miffed by an altered ending, but most people relished the terror.

13. "Christine" (1983)

Not all critics loved it in its release, but the John Carpenter-directed "Christine" has turned into a cult classic. It's a high school movie about a sentient Plymouth Fury that goes nuts and tries to kill its owner.

Amazon has triggered a $5 billion bidding war — here are 10 of the most ambitious site proposals for its new headquarters

michael_reese_SOM5

In early September, Amazon announced that it plans to build a $5 billion campus, dubbed HQ2, and bring 50,000 jobs to an undetermined North American location.

At least 50 cities in the United States and Canada are expected to submit proposals for sites they believe would be the best fit for the e-commerce giant.

For some cities, the offer sounds too good to pass up. Many are offering generous tax incentives and opportunities to develop huge swaths of land to the company.

Here are some of the most ambitious sites that cities are proposing for HQ2:

SEE ALSO: Austin, Texas is most likely to get Amazon's $5 billion headquarters, according to the data

Chula Vista, California — an 8 million-square-foot site near the US-Mexico border that would include "the world's first binational university"

Chula Vista, a city 10 miles outside of downtown San Diego, California, promises to give Amazon 8 million square feet of space next to a larger redevelopment project.

Called "Millenia," the 20-year project calls for 11 new neighborhoods that will house approximately 60,000 new residents, according to the city. The plan mostly focuses on new housing, though it also includes a giant office park, more retail space, and a hotel.

The city's proposal, called "Welcome Home Amazon," also calls for the creation of "the world's first binational university" near Amazon's headquarters — which would have campuses in both California and Mexico.

Millennia will be completed whether or not the company comes. If Amazon picks Chula Vista, the deal will also include a $400-million tax incentive package.

McKinney, Texas — a 2,500-acre development for 30,000 people

The North Texas area is proposing several sites for Amazon's HQ, including one that would include a 2,500-acre planned district in McKinney, Texas, according to Dallas News.

Located around 35 miles outside Dallas' downtown, McKinney wants to entice Amazon to a $300 million mixed-used development called Honeycreek. The first section, which will include 313 acres of single-family residential units, commercial, and retail development, is set to open in 2019.

The project is expected to house 30,000 people, and include two lakes, 300 acres of green space, farmers markets, a 200-acre office park, and commercial space.

Dallas, Texas — a development surrounding a proposed station for a $15 billion bullet train

Developers from the firms Matthews Southwest and Texas Central Partners are pitching a transit-oriented development for Amazon's HQ2 campus, according to the Dallas Business Journal. It would surround a proposed station for a bullet train, which Dallas magazine reports is expected to cost $15 billion. If approved by the city, the 240-mile line will transport passengers from Houston to Dallas in 90 minutes.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has formally expressed support for the train plan, which is likely to happen with or without Amazon. Developers hope to start construction on the development by late 2018.

You have to watch this absurd new Netflix show, 'American Vandal'

$
0
0

Netflix has a new sleeper hit that you've been missing. It's called "American Vandal," and it's outrageously good.

American Vandal

"American Vandal" is essentially "Making a Murderer," but about a fictional high school where a crime was committed. The crime, however, was spray-painting 27 cars in the faculty parking lot with the same repeated image: a cartoon penis.

You'd think a fake documentary about genitalia graffiti would be too ridiculous a premise. That's what I thought! I was wrong.

SEE ALSO: Netflix satirizes itself with 'American Vandal,' a mockumentary about true-crime obsession and shows like 'Making a Murderer'

"American Vandal" takes its stupidity very, very seriously.

On paper, an eight-episode fake documentary series about a dumb high school vandalism sounds ridiculous. It is ridiculous, but "American Vandal" manages to make the investigation as intriguing as the very thing it mocks: Shows like "The Jinx" and "Making a Murderer," and podcasts like "S-Town" and "Serial."

The reason for that is because it treats the situation at hand — a hilarious juvenile image spray-painted identically on 27 cars — as seriously as a real murder case.

"In a way this is a four-hour d--- joke," series co-creator Dan Perrault told Vanity Fair in an interview last month. "But in a more general sense, it’s basically taking very silly things and treating them extremely seriously."

That ethos is evident right from the jump, which features a splashy intro and an interview with the main suspect: Dylan Maxwell.

Not only is "American Vandal" a fake documentary about a high school vandalism, but many of its characters — including the fake documentarians themselves — are high schoolers.

Dylan Maxwell, above, is considered the senior class clown by his fellow students. He's notorious for drawing cartoon penises all over his high school. A montage, supposedly pulled from social media videos and YouTube, shows Maxwell humping a piñata.

His first interview for the documentary opens the show, intercut with footage from the local news about the vandalism and brief interviews with other students. The news report says it could be upwards of $100,000 in damages. His fellow students think it's obvious who's responsible. He's facing expulsion, and potential criminal charges.

American Vandal

Maxwell, of course, claims innocence. And he doesn't know who did it. "It's super f---ing funny, so that's all chill," Maxwell says. "But letting me get expelled for something I didn't even do? It's just suuuuch a b---- move."

This is the tone of "American Vandal": deadly serious about something very dumb.

"American Vandal" is full of amazing little details that make it feel incredibly real.

The show is produced "In Association With The Hanover High School TV Department," and it's executive produced by "Mr. Baxter" (a teacher at Hanover High).

That said, the production values are just as high as any of the big name docs out there.

There are 3D re-creations of events, for instance, but the tactic is used in "American Vandal" as a means of exploring whether or not an average-looking guy hooked up with an especially pretty lady, for example.

American Vandal

"American Vandal" does a remarkable job of working within the boundaries it sets for itself. The documentary's production team are friends, and they're interviewing teachers who they may or may not have classes with. That might mean one of the crew members mysteriously drops out of an episode or two, for instance.

It sounds sitcom-y, but it plays out in a shockingly mundane way that's far more comparable with real high school life. Some of the "evidence" revealed throughout the course of the show results in real issues — like parents finding out how many times their teens had hooked up, for instance. The relationships aren't overdramatized or played up for dramatic effect. It's the same awkward nonsense you remember from high school, but more charming.

Meet the investors age 35 and under making big bets and shaking up money management

Introducing the Rising Stars in Asset Management age 35 and under.

We scoured our contacts for ideas on who we should include, receiving recommendations from bosses, colleagues, recruiters and others working in the asset management industry. The editors made final decisions.

We've included people with a variety of roles and experiences, from companies including D.E. Shaw, State Street, Fidelity, BlackRock, Bridgewater, Point72, Millennium, AllianceBernstein, Och-Ziff, and Vanguard.

Some have risen to senior roles within established firms. Take Karen Karniol-Tambour, 32,who oversees research and about 100 staffers at Bridgewater Associates, the world's largest hedge-fund firm with $160 billion. We've also included Eric Evans, a 26-year-old director of research at Weiss Multi-Strategy Advisers, a New York hedge fund.

Others have put up particularly strong numbers. Brian Lempel, 35, who manages about $12 billion at Fidelity, was up about 44% in his portfolio for the first half of this year.

Others have embarked on launching their own companies, like Fahmi Quadir, 27, who, after making an impressive short bet on Valeant, is launching a short-selling-focused hedge fund, Safkhet Capital.

We came across many talented people, and this list is by no means comprehensive. To be eligible, we asked that nominees be based in or around the New York area, age 35 or under, and distinguished in some way from the pack.

Eric Evans, 26, Weiss Multi-Strategy Advisers

Evans, 26, is head of research and an investment analyst at Weiss Multi-Strategy Advisers, a hedge-fund firm in New York that manages more than $1.8 billion.

Evans was appointed head of research at age 25, in April 2016. His responsibilities include leading process enhancement and the cost-management effort at the firm. That includes figuring out how to make the investment teams work more efficiently, developing tools that help the firm monitor skills and behavioral biases.

Evans also manages relationships with more than 100 counterparties that work with Weiss.

As an investment analyst, Evans focuses on investing in energy stocks and derivatives, one of several sectors Weiss invests in. Evans got his start at the firm as a summer intern ahead of his senior year of college at the University of Florida. He worked at Citi as an analyst in leveraged finance before moving back to Weiss.

A Miami native, Evans holds a bachelor's and master's degree in finance from the University of Florida, which he completed in four years.

Fahmi Quadir, 27, Safkhet Capital

Quadir, 27, is launching a short-selling-focused hedge fund, Safkhet Capital. The fund, which is targeting a $200 million soft close for next year, will focus on betting against fraudulent companies.

Quadir previously worked at Deallus Consulting, where she did investigative work for pharmaceutical clients. One of the companies she came across was Valeant Pharmaceuticals, which became valuable when she moved to hedge fund Krensavage Asset Management as an analyst. There, she initiated a short position on Valeant in June 2015 and continued to press as her conviction increased, leading to major gains for the fund as the stock plummeted.

Quadir holds a bachelor's degree in math and biology from Harvey Mudd College.

Jesse Reinherz, 27, Millennium Management

Reinherz, 27, is a stock-focused portfolio manager at Millennium Management, a $35 billion New York-based hedge-fund firm. He focuses on consumer and tech investing.

Reinherz joined Millennium earlier this year, and is one of the youngest portfolio managers in the firm's history. He previously was a senior investment analyst at Moore Capital, and worked on the sell side at Stifel, where he covered the beverage sector.

He holds a bachelor's degree in economics and math from Boston University.

  • A UPS driver started a Facebook group five years ago called "UPS Dogs."
  • The group is dedicated to photos of the dogs (and sometimes cats!) that UPS drivers meet on their route.
  • UPS drivers from across the country submit their photos and videos to be featured on the page.

A little-known perk of driving a UPS truck is getting to know the customers on your route. The best perk? Hanging out with their furry, tail-wagging friends.

A Facebook group called "UPS Dogs" is going viral. The group, started by 17-year UPS veteran Sean McCarren, features adorable photos of dogs (and sometimes cats!) that he and other drivers encounter on their routes.

"We have about 30 drivers that post on a regular basis," Sean McCarren, who started the Facebook group five years ago, told INSIDER. "Dogs are really important to people's families, they are like their son or daughter, so you try to talk to them and treat them as such. What's funny is — ask any delivery driver and they will tell you — dogs just jump up into the vehicle, wanting a biscuit. Sometimes I'll go through a couple boxes of treats a week."

And yes, corporate approves of the group:

"Yes, we are aware of that site," a UPS spokesperson told BuzzFeed. "It’s a good example of the relationships our employees build with their customers, two- or four-legged!"

Sean McCarren started the group five years ago.

Apparently, drivers keep boxes of treats in their truck... an especially good idea when faced with large groups like this one.

Many dogs will jump directly into the truck.

The 20 most isolated places on Earth

$

Ittoqqortoormiit Greenland

  • Many of the world's most isolated places are home to small towns with fascinating histories and cultures.
  • Some can only be accessed by boat or plane.
  • Here are 20 remote places that people live in, and that are worth the long trek.

If you're looking to avoid touristy spots for your next vacation, you might want to try visiting one of the most isolated places on Earth — some of which can only be accessed by boat or plane.

A number of these remote locations feature gorgeous tropical climates, while others require braving Arctic temperatures or relentless deserts. The adventure is yours to choose.

Here are 20 of the most remote places on Earth that some people call home.

Tristan da Cunha, British Overseas Territory

The volcanic island of Tristan da Cunha in the South Atlantic boasts a population of 258 people with only nine different last names.

The locals speak English, but have also invented their own dialect with words derived from Scottish, English, St Helenian, South African, American, Dutch, Italian, and Irish, reflective of their various places of origin.

South Africa is the nearest country to this British Overseas Territory, which is said to be the most remote inhabited archipelago in the world.

To get there, you have to time your visit one of the three ships that make nine trips from Cape Town each year — a journey of 1,732 miles.

Cape York Peninsula, Australia

The northernmost point of Australia, Cape York is a peninsula that's swimming with crocodiles. However, it's a great place to go fishing for sport. The land is owned by five indigenous communities, who also manage its tourism industry.

Cape York is about a 28-hour drive from Cairns, and renting a four-wheel-drive vehicle is a must.

Oymyakon, Russia

This remote Russian town is known as the coldest inhabited place on Earth. Its 500 residents live in darkness for 21 hours a day with an average temperature of -58 degrees.

It's impossible to grow crops there, so people live on reindeer meat, frozen fish, and ice cubes of horse blood with macaroni, according to WIRED. Indoor plumbing is also tricky since the water freezes, so most use outhouses.

Getting there can take several days. From Moscow, a flight to either Yakutsk or to Magadan is the closest you can get, and both are over 560 miles away. The road from those cities that leads to Oymyakon is called "The Road of Bones." Don't drive it alone.

NFL QB power rankings: Where all 32 starters stand heading into Week 7

Deshaun Watson

Using a loose formula based on two different advanced statistics, we ranked all 32 NFL starting quarterbacks.

Our formula is rooted in Football Outsiders' DYAR metric and ESPN's total QBR metric. We also took a look at other factors, including recent performance, game management, and job security.

While various tiers have begun to solidify, this week's installment of the rankings looks notably different from the previous one, especially at the top. Aaron Rodgers' broken collarbone may have robbed the NFL of one of its marquee players, but with young guns like Deshaun Watson and Carson Wentz enjoying breakout seasons, there's still plenty of thrilling quarterback play to take in.

Below, check out where all 32 starters stand heading into Week 7.

32. Brett Hundley, Green Bay Packers

Ranking after Week 4: N/A (replacing Aaron Rodgers, No. 3)

Record as starter: N/A (first career start)

DYAR rank: N/A

QBR rank: N/A

One thing to know: Hundley didn't perform as poorly as he could have last Sunday, but he still threw three interceptions in a 23-10 loss to a division rival. Packers fans will be anxiously awaiting the return of Aaron Rodgers, but there's no guarantee that day will come before the end of the season.

31. DeShone Kizer, Cleveland Browns

Ranking after Week 4: 31

Record as starter: 0-5

DYAR rank: 32

QBR rank: 32

One thing to know: Kizer rode the bench during Week 6, but he'll get another crack at the starting job against the Tennessee Titans this Sunday. The Notre Dame product still leads the league with nine interceptions, so head coach Hue Jackson will hope that the week off reenergized his rookie signal caller.

30. C.J. Beathard, San Francisco 49ers

Ranking after Week 4: N/A (replacing Brian Hoyer, No. 29)

Record as starter: N/A (first career start)

DYAR rank: N/A

QBR rank: N/A

One thing to know: Sunday's game could be rough sailing for this Iowa product, but at least he has football in his blood. Beathard's grandfather, Bobby Beathard, served as general manager of the Redskins and Chargers for over 20 years, winning a pair of Super Bowls along the way.

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Ulta Beauty stocks tons of makeup, skin care, and hair care products — which can get overwhelming.
  • We asked 15 Ulta Beauty employees to pick out the one product they couldn't live without.
  • Too Faced received the most love, with four employees picking products from that brand.

The cosmetics store Ulta Beauty is arguably right up there with Sephora as a makeup lover's paradise.

Look one way and you see tons of high-end cosmetics calling your name. Look the other way and you're met with aisles of drugstore favorites. Walk towards the back and you'll find hair care products and brands you never knew existed. And don't even get us started on the coupons.

It can be difficult to know exactly where to look when you're surrounded by all these options. We previously asked Sephora and Lush employees to pick out their favorites, so we decided to talk to people who work at Ulta to find out their picks for the best product in the entire store.

Here are their recommendations.

Too Faced Hangover Replenishing Face Primer

Cost: $32

Ulta employee Lydia thinks this coconut water-infused primer is a "must have" first step for any beauty routine. NFL WEEK 7: Our official predictions for who wins this weekend

Broncos Wk 7

Week 6 was a wild one for NFL fans.

Adrian Peterson turned the clock back, the New York Jets got caught on the wrong end of the season's most controversial rulingAaron Rodgers broke his collarbone, and it was all capped off by another Monday night miracle for gamblers.

Parity is now king in the NFL — in a world where the Dolphins can come back from a 17-0 deficit to beat the Falcons in Atlanta and the winless Giants can go into Mile High Stadium and take down the Broncos, anybody can truly beat anybody.

This means the "sure bets" for gamblers are few and far between. But if you look for trends you trust and bet accordingly, you can still make it through Sunday with your wallet intact.

After going 7-7 last week, our season record stands at 50-40-1 against the spread so far, a tidily profitable number. On to the Week 7 games, where we will attempt to improve on this already winning year.

All lines are courtesy of the Westgate Las Vegas Superbook.

Kansas City Chiefs (-3) at Oakland Raiders (Thursday, 8:25 p.m. ET)

The pick: Raiders +3

The logic: The Raiders are desperate for a win, at home, and underdogs in this spot. Meanwhile, the Chiefs are getting over 70% of the bets on this game according to SportsInsights. Weird things happen on short weeks — maybe Derek Carr finally starts showing the skill that carried the Raiders to so many late victories last season.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (NO LINE) at Buffalo Bills (Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET)

The pick: Buccaneers

The logic: Ryan Fitzpatrick revenge game! Or at least, possibly — there's no line on this game right now because Jameis Winston still might play on Sunday and if he does, Tampa will also be in good hands. But if he can't go and Fitzpatrick gets the start, be ready for him to pour some the points on his former team. There's no fuel for football like a desire to destroy those that have wronged you in the past.

Carolina Panthers (-3) at Chicago Bears (Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET)

The pick: Bears +3

The logic: Two things I believe in: home underdogs, and Mitch Trubisky. This game features both!

  • Boulder, Colorado, was ranked as the happiest city in the US.
  • Other cities on the list include Anchorage, Alaska, San Diego, California, and Washington, DC.

Where you live can have a tremendous effect on your happiness.

While everyone knows that Denmark is famous for being one of the happiest countries in the world, it turns out there are some pretty happy places here in the US, too.

National Geographic, Gallup, and New York Times best-selling author Dan Buettner recently released a ranking of the 25 happiest cities in the US.

The data was published as the cover story in the November issue of "National Geographic," as well as in the new book "The Blue Zones of Happiness."

The rankings were determined by the National Geographic/Blue Zones Index, which measured a population’s happiness using 15 metrics, including civic engagement, walkability, healthy food options, and access to nature.

Of the 25 happiest cities, eight are in California.

Among the happiest cities were Santa Cruz, California, Anchorage, Alaska, and Colorado Springs, Colorado.

25. Austin, TX

Austin's stunning escapes to nature, such as Barton Springs, a three-acre pool with water sourced from underground springs, are the reason it was voted it one of the happiest cities in the country.

24. Portland, ME

Portland made the list thanks to its "walkability, access to nature, and civic engagement," according to National Geographic.

23. San Diego-Carlsbad, CA

San Diego's Balboa Park, a 1,200-acre oasis that is home to the San Diego Zoo, puts the city on the list.
