7 details you may have missed on the latest 'Riverdale' episode

0
0

josie cheryl chuck riverdale

Warning: Spoilers ahead for season two, episode seven of "Riverdale," titled "Tales From the Darkside."

After a week break, "Riverdale" returned Wednesday with some creepy moments.

From Jughead's odd ride to Greendale to Cheryl's behavior, fans were treated to some questionable moments. There is also mention of the Riverdale Reaper, an old killer who probably gets his name from the Grim Reaper, which everyone knows means death. He's also a Marvel character.

As always, the show snuck in some great pop culture and comic references, which INSIDER worked with Archie Comics to reveal.

Here are seven details you might have missed.

Jughead's Southside Serpent tattoo even has a crown.

Jughead is rarely seen without his crown in both the comics and the show, where it's a beanie, and the crown is often squeezed in random places.

Earlier this season, a crown was seen on his motorcycle helmet and he drew one on Archie's cast.

Cheryl calls Archie and Jug Bert and Ernie, a reference to the best friends on "Sesame Street."

When Cheryl and Josie head to confront Chuck, Cheryl shoves Archie and Jug to the side while making the reference.

Later, she mentions "Shabbey Road Studios," which is a play on Abbey Road Studios, the recording studio closely associated with The Beatles.

Jug has to deliver the crate to 115 Derby Street, which happens to be the same address as the House of the Seven Gables.

The House of the Seven Gables is a mansion in Salem, Massachusetts that was made famous by Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel "The House of the Seven Gables." Considering Salem is known for the Salem witch trials and Greendale is the home of Sabrina the Teenage Witch in the Archie Comics, this is a fun reference.

10 ways to tweak your daily routine to set yourself up for long-term success

0

man walking against stream unconventional unique different

We all have 24 hours in a day.

When you see some people achieve a level of unimaginable success, it's not because they have more hours in the day than you; it's because they've figured out how to use those hours more effectively. That allows for compounding results.

Whether your goal is to take your career to the next level or to have more control over your schedule, here are 10 life hacks you need to implement in your daily routine.

SEE ALSO: Everyone makes the same mistake with managing their time

1. Set alarms for everything.

I know I'm not the only person who lives by the mantra "If it's not in my mobile calendar, it doesn't happen."

Success tends to be the result of being able to manage more with less — meaning you can handle 10x the responsibilities of most people but with the same or even less effort. This goes back to the idea of working smart, not hard.

So, with an increase in responsibilities, you can't expect yourself to remember everything. In fact, it's a waste of brainpower. Just set reminders, and show up when you need to. It's that easy.

2. If someone wants to schedule a call, send a Google calendar invite.

Building on the above, if someone emails you requesting a call — or if you email someone to schedule a call — always, always, always send a Google call invite.

Not only does this ensure you don't forget — but it ensures the other person won't forget. And more than that, it shows you're on top of your game.

You're organized, and you're going to be there when you say you're going to be there.

3. Chunk your activities together — don't bounce between different tasks.

Do you have tons of calls this week? See if you can move them all to one afternoon, back to back to back.

Do you have a bunch of video editing to do? Do it all in the morning, instead of doing some now and then some later.

Do you need to think through a big pitch for a prospective client? Block off an evening to focus on that and only that.

By performing related tasks one after the other, you're able to move so much faster. The reason is that you get in your flow for that one specific type of activity. Whereas, if you have a call, then try to edit a video for 40 minutes, then respond to two emails, and then hop on another call, by the time it's 2 p.m. you're going to be brain dead and exhausted.

The best cocktail shakers to make delicious drinks at home

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

cocktail 4x3

The Insider Pick:

When you want a delicious cold mixed drink during the holidays, after work, or when entertaining, an indispensable part of a good home bar is a top-quality cocktail shaker.

There are two popular styles of cocktail shakers: the Boston shaker and the cobbler shaker. The Boston shaker consists of two mixing tins or glasses of different sizes (usually 28 ounces and 18 ounces.) The liquids you are mixing naturally create a seal between the two containers to avoid dripping. When using a Boston shaker, you need a separate Julep or Hawthorne strainer depending on the drink you are making.

The cobbler shaker has three parts: a tapered top with a built-in strainer, bottom shaking tin, and a cap that can also work for measuring liquids. The biggest complaint about the cobbler is that the top either leaks or is difficult to remove once the ice chills the shaker.

Three of the five shakers in our buying guide are Boston shakers. These are preferred by professional bartenders because of their simplicity, the amount of control they afford, and their fast performance. The other models we include are new takes on the classic cobbler. They are excellent for beginners who are just getting the hang of making mixed drinks.

Our picks for the best cocktail shakers are based on hours of research into reviews from first-time cocktail makers, amateur home mixologists, professional bartenders, and people of all levels in between. We picked our best cocktail shakers based on their ease of use, durability, security (do they leak?), and comfort.

Read on in the slides below to learn why the Top Shelf Bar Supply Stainless Steel Boston Shaker Set is our top pick and why you might also like the Cocktail Kingdom Koriko Weighted Shaking Tin Set, the OXO SteeL Press & Pour Insulated Cocktail Shaker, the Metrokane Bullet Cocktail Shaker, and the WMF Loft Boston Shaker.

The best cocktail shaker overall

Why you'll love it: If you are looking for a basic cocktail shaker for mixing your favorite drinks without making a mess, the Top Shelf Bar Supply Stainless Steel Boston Shaker Set is an excellent option.

Top Shelf’s Boston Shaker Set comes with two shaker tins: a 28-ounce weighted tin and an 18-ounce unweighted tin. Both are made of food-grade 304 stainless steel and are safe for both commercial and home dishwashers.

Top Shelf promises that you'll get “a perfect watertight seal every time,” and our research backs the claim up. But, if you do find that this cocktail shaker is not up to snuff, Top Shelf has a fairly generous money-back guarantee.

Not many of the expert review sites have taken a close look at the Top Shelf Boston Shaker, but those that have rated it highly. Wiki.ezvid.com calls it the best cocktail shaker you can buy and says it provides a clean pour with no drips, comes with a money-back guarantee, and won’t warp over time. WarmReviews included this shaker in its top ten list, too, because of how well it tested with professional bartenders. The reviewer also praised its durability.

The Top Shelf Boston Shaker Set has more than 275 five-star reviews on Amazon. Many of the buyers favorably compare it to a cobbler shaker, and most of the reviewers suggest the Boston style shaker is much easier to use.

Specifically, removing the top tin is effortless compared to taking the lid off the cobbler. You simply break the seal of the tins by squeezing close to where they meet. Buyers also liked the look and design of this cocktail shaker set.

Pros: Money-back guarantee, durable, offers water-tight seal

Cons: A bit of a learning curve for those used to cobbler shakers, doesn’t come with accessories

Buy the Top Shelf Bar Supply Stainless Steel Boston Shaker Set on Amazon for $19.99 (Only available from third-party sellers)

The best cocktail shaker on a budget

Why you'll love it: When you are using a Hawthorne strainer to remove ice, pulp, and other elements from your mixed drinks, you can count on a snug fit at an affordable price when you choose the Cocktail Kingdom Koriko Weighted Shaking Tin Set.

The Cocktail Kingdom Koriko Weighted Shaking Tin Set comes with two weighted shaking tins made of 18/8 stainless steel in the standard Boston shaker 28-ounce and 18-ounce sizes. The shakers are designed to be a good fit for easy shaking and separation and to fit strainers. Each shaker is dishwasher safe. The set does not come with any additional accessories, and we were unable to find any warranty information.

Wirecutter rated the Koriko Weighted Shaking Tins as the best shaker on the market. The reviewers like the balance and weight of the shaker tins. This shaker also received high marks because the tins snugly fit a Hawthorne strainer, and it is simple to break the seal. Plus, in their tests, they found the smaller shaker sits higher in the larger tin, which made for more comfortable shaking.

Booze Nerds compared the Koriko cocktail shaker to the OXO model featured on our next slide. The reviewers were impressed with how this model held its seal under all conditions.

There are only eight buyer reviews of the Koriko cocktail shaker on Amazon, but none of them are lower than four stars. The only reason that this model seemed to lose a star in some reviewers’ eyes was that they just had not used it enough to determine whether it deserved a perfect five.

One professional bartender referred to this set at the “industry gold standard.” Others noted that the tins held a tight seal with no dripping and that separation was effortless.

Pros: Durable design, well-balanced, drip-free, easy to break seal

Cons: Doesn’t come with any accessories

Buy the Cocktail Kingdom Koriko Weighted Shaking Tin Set on Amazon for $16.98

Buy the OXO SteeL Hawthorne Cocktail Strainer on Amazon for $6.99

The best cocktail shaker for beginners

Why you'll love it: The OXO SteeL Press & Pour Insulated Cocktail Shaker is ideal for novice cocktail makers because it's easy to use and has a built-in strainer.

The OXO SteeL Press & Pour Insulated Cocktail Shaker has a brushed stainless steel exterior with a second interior wall that keeps beverages cool, your hands warm, and keeps condensation from forming on the outside and making the shaker slippery. The container holds 18 ounces. The lid screws on and feature three silicone seals to prevent spills.

You can pour your drink through the self-straining top by pressing a button. When you press the button again, the lid closes. The lid can be disassembled and washed in the dishwasher, but the main tin must be hand-washed.

Lifehacker liked that the Press & Pour shaker is self-straining, insulated, and that you can use it with one hand. The reviewer also said it's a step up from the Boston shaker, which can cause a mess for beginners. Wiki.ezvid.com gave this model high ratings because it has three strong silicone seals and can be used with both cold and hot drinks. However, the reviewer found that the built-in strainer clogs easily.

Top Ten Select also loved this shaker because the insulation keeps your hands from getting too cold, but they do not recommend it for advanced bartenders.

Around 71% of the reviews on Amazon are for five stars. Buyers commented on how well-built and heavy duty this cocktail shaker is. They liked that you did not have to rely on suction for the top and bottom to seal since the top screws into the bottom.

There were a few complaints about pulpy juices, herbs, fruit, and even small slivers of ice getting stuck in the strainer and making it hard to pour. Also, make sure that the top is depressed before you start shaking, or you will end up with a mess.

Pros: Built-in strainer, insulated, great for beginners

Cons: Expensive, strainer clogs easily

Buy the OXO SteeL Press & Pour Insulated Cocktail Shaker on Amazon for $29.95

Whether you're exploring the world solo or taking a romantic trip with a significant other, travel is arguably one of the best ways to spend your time and money.

The start of a new year provides the opportunity to add to your bucket list of destinations, and in the interest of helping you do that, we rounded up some of the best spots to visit in 2018.

Glide along the rivers of Ninh Binh, Vietnam, or wander the cobblestone streets of Tbilisi, Georgia — there's no shortage of countries to discover.

Keep scrolling to see 50 places that should be on your radar this coming year.

Ninh Binh, Vietnam

Known as the "Halong Bay on Land," Ninh Binh is a small city in Northern Vietnam. Its proximity to Hanoi — 60 miles to the south — is the reason that many overlook the scenic destination.

Nestled into the country's Red River Delta, Ninh Binh boasts impressive topography that includes mountains, limestone cliffs, and forests. Glide along the river in a traditional boat, explore caves in Cuc Phuong National Park, or visit the ancient temples and palaces in Hoa Lu.

Lake District, Cumbria, England

The Lake District is precisely what you'd imagine when you think of the English countryside. Rolling hills, serene streams, and moss-covered stones. This scenery has served as inspiration for countless famous writers, like Beatrix Potter.

The area makes up England's most popular national park, attracting around 18 million visitors per year. However, it wasn't until this summer that the Lake District was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park is home to the country's tallest mountain (Scafell Peak) and its deepest and longest lakes (Wastwater Lake and Windmere Lake).

Chicago, Illinois

Named the "Restaurant City of the Year" by Bon Appétit magazine, Chicago is a hot destination for foodies. Must eats include the Au Cheval burger — which is frequently named among the best burgers in the country — deep dish pizza from any number of the city's institutions like Lou Malnati's or Pequod's, and anything from Alinea — which is considered one of the best restaurants in the country. The city also saw the opening of the first-ever Nutella Cafe this year.

Besides its buzzing dining scene, Chicago has plenty of other tourist draws: beaches, ballparks, breweries, comedy clubs, museums, and music festivals. Trivago also named the Langham Chicago the best five-star hotel in the US for 2018. Just do yourself a favor and avoid going during the brutally-cold winter.

9 rules to follow when making a wedding guest list, according to a party planner

0
0

Bella Edward Twilight

There are a million little details to consider over the course of planning a wedding.

Between the venue, the dress, the flowers, the wedding party, the music, and the location, planning the event can feel a little bit overwhelming. But when you add in the task of creating a guest list, it can seem downright impossible. If even the thought of making a wedding guest list makes you reach for the antacids, you need some advice from the experts.

Keep in mind your overall vision of the day

Unless you have a very, very clear vision of what you want your wedding day to look like, the guest list shouldn’t be one of the first things you do in terms of wedding planning. In order to make your guest list, you first need to be able to answer some preliminary questions. Janessa White, co-founder of Simply Eloped, told INSIDER that knowing if you want a big or small wedding, where you want to hold the wedding, and on what day, should be set before you start to make an actual serious list.

“If you want to do it on a Monday or a Tuesday, your rates are gonna be way lower for that venue, but most people are only going to come on a weekend if you’re inviting hundreds of people,” White said.

Consider your budget

Your budget influences pretty much every decision you’ll make regarding your wedding.

“Once you remove all other expenses, how much are you willing to pay per guest? Your venue will either have a general food and beverage minimum or a charge per person for food and beverage,” Chelsea Roy, founder at Everything But The Ring, said. “Take these numbers and add the service charge (generally between 18 and 25%) plus your local taxes. This is the amount you're actually spending per person. Does it still fit your budget? If not, you will need to cut the list.”

It’s hard to come to terms with the fact that you won’t be able to invite everyone, but you have to feel comfortable with how much you’re spending on your wedding

Think about your target count

If you have a general number of guests in mind, that can help you start to whittle down your list and start to figure out who should be included and who maybe can be left off the final tally.

“What I usually try to recommend is do you want to have a huge celebration or do you want to have something more personal? Because it’s hard to have both at the same time,” White said.

Make sure you clearly communicate to guests if they’re allowed a plus one, if you’re inviting the family, and other details, White advised. Keeping a target count in mind can also help you make some of those initial decisions like venue and food without having to have a completely finalized guest list ahead of time or making your venue choice and then altering your list.

The best budget laptops you can buy

0
0

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

budget laptop 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • Laptops that cost less than $600 don’t have to be low-powered. For evidence, just look at our top pick, the HP Pavilion x360. It offers a 13-inch touchscreen, an Intel Core i3 processor, and a hefty 6GB of RAM for about $500.

The laptop is largely considered to be the hub of our digital lives, and while many suggest that the smartphone is changing that, the fact is, there’s still plenty that’s far easier to do on a laptop than on anything else. That’s especially true if you’re getting a laptop for work or for school, and with the new school year right around the corner that may well be the case.

While you may see headlines about devices like the latest MacBook Pro, it turns out you don’t need to spend thousands to get a decent computer — especially if you’re using it for things like word processing, web browsing, and emailing.

Of course, there are quite a few things to consider in purchasing a new laptop. After all, they’re pretty complex machines. Here’s a quick rundown of the features to look for when you make your choice.

  • Operating System: There are a few major computer operating systems out there. You’re probably most familiar with Windows, as its by far the most popular operating system, but there's also Apple’s macOS, which is also very capable. Finally, there's Google’s Chrome OS, which is a little more targeted to those with basic computer needs who like the idea of being able to use some Android apps on their computer and are plugged into Google’s ecosystem and web apps. We’re not including any computers with macOS on this list because there aren’t any that would fall under the "budget laptop" distinction of costing $500 or less.
  • Specs: Some computers are more powerful than others. Things like the processor and amount of RAM will dictate how quickly your computer runs, while the amount of storage indicates how many files you can keep on your computer at once.
  • Size: Laptops come in a range of different sizes, however, the smaller ones generally sit in the 10- to 11-inch range, while the larger ones can get as big as 17-inches. That’s handy for watching movies, but it comes at the cost of portability.

Then, of course, there’s cost. For this guide, we consider a “budget” laptop to be a laptop that costs about $600 or less. However, if you can afford to spend more than that, you will be able to get something more powerful and arguably better than the computers on this list.

You can check out our guide to the best laptops overall or our guide to the best Chromebooks on Insider Picks.

Updated on 11/30/2017 by Christian de Looper: Added the Samsung Chromebook Pro and adjusted prices.

Although the HP Pavilion x360 is our top pick, for various reasons laid out in the slides below, you should also consider the Asus Chrome Flip, the Dell Inspiron 15 5000, the Microsoft Surface 3, the Lenovo 110-15IBR, and the Samsung Chromebook Pro.

SEE ALSO: The best Chromebooks you can buy

The best budget laptop overall

Why you'll love it: The HP Pavilion x360 is versatile thanks to its ability to work in tablet mode, and it offers above-par performance for the price and plenty of ports.

If you’re looking for the best laptop you can possibly get in your ~$500 budget, then the HP Pavilion x360 is for you, specifically the 13-inch variant with the touchscreen.

As you might assume, the x360 is actually more of a two-in-one than a straight up laptop, so you can actually flip the screen all the way around to use the device as a tablet if you so choose. But the tablet/laptop combo isn’t the only great thing about this computer. It also boasts an Intel Core i3-6100U, which is coupled with 6GB of RAM. The result? A very capable computer that should be powerful enough for any businessperson, student, or just the average Joe who wants a web-browsing and emailing machine.

You’ll also get a 500GB hard drive, which is a disk drive. That’s an important aspect to consider here. The drive is not a solid-state-drive, so you’ll need to be careful when moving it while it’s on.

When it comes to input and outputs, this computer will give you two USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0 port, one headphone jack, and a HDMI port, so you’ll have plenty of room for your peripherals.

This Windows 10 computer didn’t just catch our attention. Laptop Mag gave it 4/5 stars, and it’s sitting with an average of 4.1/5 stars on Amazon. The downsides? The display on the computer isn’t all that great, and the aforementioned disk drive isn't as nice as a solid disk drive, but it is pretty common for computers in this price range.

Pros: Excellent performance for the price, plenty of ports, Windows 10

Cons: Disk drive, slightly under-par display

Buy the HP Pavilion x360 13 on Amazon for about $540

The best budget laptop that's a Chromebook

Why you'll love it: The Asus Chromebook Flip C302CA is sleek and stylish, it runs Android apps, has a touchscreen, and tops the charts as the best Chromebook you can buy.

Asus has long offered a number of great laptops at a reasonable price, and it was pretty quick to jump onto the Chromebook train when Google launched Chrome OS. In particular, the Asus Chromebook Flip C302CA-DHM4 is an excellent computer, offering great value for money. We named it the best Chromebook in our buying guide.

For starters, the raw specs are really quite good. The laptop has an Intel Core m3-6Y30 processor, coupled with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of flash storage. Now, that might not sound like much compared to other computers on this list, but Chromebooks are a little different. For example, they largely use web-based apps rather than local apps, meaning a lot of storage isn’t all that necessary, and the computer doesn’t really need to process intensive apps.

On top of that, the battery life on this device is good, too. You’ll get more than 10 hours of use from the computer, which is more than many other computers on the market. It even boasts a backlit keyboard coupled with a touch-sensitive display, so you can use it like a tablet if you so choose. It also runs Android apps, so it can double as a tablet.

So what’s the downside? Well, the laptop is a little more expensive than other Chromebooks, and while we like the fact that it has two USB-C ports, it does mean that you might need to use some adapters until all your peripherals make use of the new connectivity options.

Pros: Light, usable as a tablet, powerful for a Chromebook

Cons: Pricey, may require adapters

Buy the Asus Chromebook Flip on Amazon for $429.99 (originally $499.00)

The best 15-inch budget laptop

Why you'll love it: The Dell Inspiron 15 5000 has a giant 15-inch screen and decent specs for less than $500.

Looking for something with a slightly larger display than what your average sub-$500 laptop might offer? The Dell Inspiron 15 5000 has excellent specs under the hood, plus it boasts a large, 15-inch display, so you’ll have plenty of screen for those in-bed movie nights.

The laptop boasts an Intel Core i5 dual-core processor, which is coupled with a hefty 8GB of RAM, and that's more than enough power for most use-cases. On top of that, you’ll get a 1TB hard drive, so you’ll have plenty of room to store all your media and files.

Unlike plenty of other computers on the market these days, the Dell Inspiron 15 5000 does indeed come with a disc drive, so you’ll still be able to watch your DVDs and listen to your CDs if you so choose. It can be a helpful addition. The laptop also offers a USB 3.0 port, two USB 2.0 ports, an Ethernet port, HDMI, and a headphone jack.

So what are the downsides to this machine? Well, for starters the screen isn’t the best on the market, and a review from PCWorld noted that the trackpad could have been more accurate. However, the site did give it some praise and a respectable 3.5 rating. Laptop Mag gave it a decent review for a budget laptop.

Pros: Powerful, lots of storage, disc drive for DVDs and CDs

Cons: Mediocre display, somewhat expensive, trackpad isn’t overly accurate

Buy the Dell Inspiron 15 5000 on Amazon for $639.99 (originally $699.99)

4 affordable retirement spots with world-class healthcare

0

couple relaxing london hyde park

  • If you're planning to retire abroad, health care should be a major consideration.
  • Medicare doesn't cover health care costs for U.S. citizens living overseas.
  • There are some countries that are good options for low cost of healthcare and low cost of living — including Mexico, Costa Rica, Portugal, and Malaysia.

Health care is one of the biggest considerations for any retiree planning to settle abroad, and could be a deciding factor when choosing which country to move to. Since Medicare does not cover health care costs for U.S. citizens living overseas, it's important to have a plan in place for how you're going to pay for it. But more than that, it's well advised to select somewhere that has a quality health care system to ensure that you get a good standard of treatment when you require it.

As the saying goes, you can't put a price on your health. You can however, reduce how much it will cost for any treatment required. Many countries that are affordable to live in have health care on par with the U.S., so not only will your medical bills go down, but so will your cost of living.

Note: All cost of living estimates refer to figures from Numbeo, the world's largest database of user contributed data about cities and countries worldwide.

SEE ALSO: You can assign a dollar value to everyone in your life — and everyone isn't worth the same

1. Mexico

Living costs in Mexico City are nearly 60% lower than those in New York City, which is just one of the many reasons the country is a popular destination for retirees. It also has a high number of expats and a selection of communities specifically set up for retired Americans. Whether you want beautiful beaches, quaint colonial towns, or bustling cities with developed infrastructures, Mexico has it all. (See also: How Almost Anyone Can Afford to Retire in Mexico)

As a foreigner, you won't be entitled to free public health care, but you'll have wide access to facilities because the majority of hospitals in Mexico are private establishments. Perhaps unsurprisingly, many of the best medical facilities in this country are based within the major cities of Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. Thanks to the country's proximity to the U.S., many of Mexico's doctors not only speak excellent English, but have also spent time training and studying in the U.S.

Dental care is particularly cheap in Mexico, with many U.S. citizens making special trips to enjoy the low prices. The border town of Los Algodones has even been nicknamed the “dental capital of the world” thanks to the high concentration of dental clinics there. Opticians are also easy to find in Los Algodones and there are a number of national chains and franchises that provide low priced examinations and treatments. (See also: Retire for Half the Cost in These 5 Countries)

2. Malaysia

Malaysia is regularly recognized as one of the best countries to retire in thanks to its welcoming culture, warm climate, and extremely low living costs. Life in the capital, Kuala Lumpur, is 54% cheaper than in New York City, meaning your dollar goes a lot further. Retirees from across the globe understandably see this as a real attraction, and in the major cities you'll find large expat populations.

Medical tourism is big business here, so much so that Malaysia's Ministry of Health has its own Healthcare Travel Council. It was set up by the government to raise the profile of the country as a top destination for world-class health care services and increase both the quality and quantity of medical tourism. It helps provide a standardized level of service by only approving and endorsing top quality medical facilities, which should give you peace of mind when selecting where to get treatment.

As a non-Malaysian, you won't have access to free public health care, meaning you'll need to get a good insurance policy. However, these are generally cheaper than in the U.S., and will enable you to receive treatment in either public or private facilities, depending on your preference. (See also: 5 Incredible Places to Retire Abroad That Anyone Can Afford)

3. Costa Rica

With stunning Caribbean beaches, lush inland jungles, developed cities, and a warm, sunny climate all year round, Costa Rica really has it all. The cost of living in San Jose is 40% below that of New York City, while the standard of living remains extremely high. It's little wonder Costa Rica is so popular among retirees from the U.S.

Many U.S. citizens already travel to Costa Rica every year for so-called medical tourism, as the prices are far lower than back home. But for expats living there as legally recognized residents, it gets even better. You have access to both tiers of their health service, private and public. If you need emergency treatment, you are eligible to receive it under the universal Caja system, as well as regular checkups, many prescription drugs, and even some surgeries.

In addition to the public health care available, there's also an excellent private system that many retirees pay for, mainly because waiting times on non life-threatening surgeries are much shorter. Both systems are renowned for having up-to-date equipment, facilities, and technologies, which partly explains why the health care is rated so highly. You'll also find that most doctors speak English to a very high standard, which should alleviate any concerns around communication. (See also: 5 Countries That Welcome American Retirees)

• Music industry titans Jay-Z and Beyoncé have been married since 2008.

According to Forbes, the couple's net worth comes out to a total of $1.16 billion.

• The pair now have three children: Blue Ivy, and twins Rumi and Sir.

Ever since they collaborated on the song "'03 Bonnie & Clyde" back in 2002, Beyoncé and Jay-Z have been a match made in musical heaven.

Tabloids were quick to speculate whether or not the duo had more than a professional relationship. But even after they tied the knot in 2008, the couple has largely kept quiet about their romance.

But that doesn't mean it's always been smooth sailing for the "Crazy in Love" couple.

In a recent interview with New York Times executive editor Dean Baquet, Jay-Z opened up about his infidelity, which Beyoncé alluded to in her acclaimed visual album Lemonade.

"You shut down all emotions," the rapper told Baquet. "So even with women, you gonna shut down emotionally, so you can't connect... In my case, like it's, it's deep. And then all the things happen from there: infidelity."

Jay-Z went on to reveal the couple used their craft "like a therapy session," making music together in order to heal. The sessions ultimately resulted in reconciliation, along with Lemonade and Jay-Z's album 4:44.

Here's a look back on the relationship of Jay-Z and Beyoncé:

All the fabulous looks from the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show viewing party

VS viewing party

  • The Victoria's Secret models looked as stunning as ever on the pink carpet for the fashion show viewing party.
  • Some Angels opted for something more casual and chic, while others went all out in lingerie-inspired evening wear.

Having stepped off the runway in Shanghai only last week, the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show models reconvened in New York last night for an intimate viewing of the showcase.

And while the annual extravaganza saw them take to the runway in some of the most extraordinary and exquisite lingerie ever created, the screening party played host to a far more pared back and chic aesthetic.

Leading the charge was Martha Hunt, who opted for the popular trend of slip dress layering.

Pairing a delicate silver slip with almost entirely open sides, the blonde model — who has walked for the brand for the last five years — gave the look a more relaxed feel via a pair of loose-fitting white straight leg jeans.

Bypassing this casual approach was Bella Hadid, who took inspiration from the runway in a deep red leather bustier dress. Softening the sultry look, Hadid wore her hair loosely waved and her make-up stripped back.

Joining Bella in the lingerie-inspired evening wear realm was returning Angel Candice Swanepoel, who plumped for a black bra and high-waisted pants with a sheer jacket and flares.

While there was little in the way of vibrant color last night, the likes of Sara Sampaio, Maria Borges and Taylor Hill added a welcome zesty feel with bold orange and yellow accents.

The surprising 'prenups' of America's richest couples

0

Beyonce Jay-Z

  • A prenuptial agreement (or prenup) is a legal agreement couples enter into before they get married.
  • Many involve what will happen to the couple's finances should they divorce.
  • However, relationship contracts, whether they be a prenup, postnup, or other agreement, can stipulate more than simply who gets what in case of a breakup.

Successful power couples agree upon important issues from the get go.

And whether it's with a legally-binding prenup, or postnup, or a more flexible relationship agreement, they often put it in writing.

"Two egos in a marriage can be great if all the important issues are agreed upon up front," Handel Group co-president and life coach Laurie Gerber previously told Business Insider.

While prenups are traditionally thought of as worst-case-scenario financial planning, relationship agreements aren't always all about the money.

Some of the most important issues couples should agree upon early on include sexual and romantic needs, family boundaries, and who pays for what, and putting it into writing can give a marriage a better chance of success.

Most breakups happen because of cheating, Gerber says: "Couples who face the reality of this threat head-on and deal with it stand the most chance of success."

"Don't be afraid to put it all in writing to refer back to as a living breathing document," she says. "And plan to have meetings about how you are running your marriage and family just as you would for your company or any other project you care about profoundly."

Here are some of the less conventional things successful power couples have put into writing:

Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan agreed to spend more time together

Before marrying in 2012, when Priscilla Chan moved to Palo Alto, California, she and Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg drew up a relationship agreement.

In it, Zuckerberg agreed to take her on a date once a week and spend 100 minutes of alone time each week with her outside the office or his apartment.

The couple are worth an estimated $74.5 billion.

Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake have a clause about cheating

Actors Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake reportedly have an infidelity clause in their prenup that states Biel will receive $500,000 if Timberlake cheats.

The couple are worth an estimated $248 million

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban agreed not to tolerate drug or alcohol abuse

Actress Nicole Kidman and singer songwriter Keith Urban reportedly signed a prenup stipulating that Urban, who struggled with alcoholism and cocaine abuse, would receive $600,000 a year for every year they are together, but only if Urban refrained from using illegal narcotics or drinks excessively.

The couple married in June 2006, and in October 2006 Urban checked into rehab for an alcohol addiction.

"Definitely we both met each other exactly at the right time," Urban told People magazine in 2007. "She said early on that she wanted to be brave with me. I feel there was something else at work, bringing us together and then just continuing to watch over us."

The couple are worth an estimated $205 million.

13 confusing things your boss says — and what they really mean

boss

  • It can be hard to get used to a new boss' communication style.
  • To figure out the meaning of their vague comments, you have to consider the context of the conversation and your relationship with them.
  • We asked two workplace experts to decode some common confusing remarks from bosses — from "Not bad" to "Do you have the bandwidth?"

It can take a while to get used to your boss' communication style. When they call your idea "interesting," are they saying it's the stupidest thing they've ever heard? Or simply mulling it over for a moment? You can drive yourself crazy trying to figure it out.

According to Michael Kerr, an international business speaker and author of "The Humor Advantage," understanding your boss' cryptic comments depends a lot on the context of the conversation and the relationship you have with them. Maybe you should take everything at face value, or maybe you really should read between the lines.

We asked Kerr and Lynn Taylor, a national workplace expert and the author of "Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant: How to Manage Childish Boss Behavior and Thrive in Your Job," to parse some common confusing statements from bosses. Read on to learn how to speak manager-ese.

SEE ALSO: 11 things you can do today to be more respected, productive, and impressive at work

'I trust you to make the right decision on this one'

On the one hand, this remark could mean your boss is giving you more autonomy and wants to empower you — "which are all good things," Kerr said.

On the other hand, Kerr added, it could mean they want you to work more independently and take more responsibility for your work than you have in the past.

'The timing for this just isn't good right now'

Maybe this really isn't a great time to put your idea into action — because of financial or logistical constraints.

But, Kerr said, your boss may also be saying there will never be a good time for this idea: "I'm just kicking it down the field because I don't want to deal with it."

Alternatively, Kerr said, it might mean you didn't do a good job presenting the idea and you need to do a little more homework to sell your boss on its importance.

7 ways you can help a loved one with depression, according to experts

0
0

You're the worst depression

There were so many things I was willing to speak to the father of my child about. Politics? Of course. My undeniable disdain for his mother? Surprisingly, not all that difficult to discuss. But even now, four years and a baby later, I have a difficult time articulating my depression and how he can help me.

Figuring out how you can help a family member suffering from depression isn’t easy, especially since depression impacts different people in different ways. But it is worth trying.

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), affects 6.8 million adults, or roughly 3.1% of the United States population. Still, only 43.2% of those affected receive treatment. The World Health Organization (WHO) cites major depression asthe heaviest burden of disability among mental and behavior disorders.

The stigma associated with mental health disorders, like depression, also inhibits individuals from seeking the support and treatment they need. In 2011,only 59.6% of individuals with mental illness reported receiving treatment, and the stereotypes depicting people with mental illness as being dangerous, unpredictable, and generally incompetent often discouraged individuals from speaking candidly about their mental health.

The first step in helping your loved one who is suffering from depression is acknowledging that they have it. We rounded up some other tips that will help you be a good ally to those in your life grappling with this mental illness.

Remember four important, undeniable facts

The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) asks that supportive family members and friendsremember four things prior to any attempt at helping their loved one with depression: your loved one’s illness is not your fault (or your loved one’s fault), you can’t make your loved one well, but you can offer support, understanding, and hope, each person experiences a mood disorder differently, with different symptoms, and the best way to find out what your loved one needs from you is by asking direct questions.

Keeping a clear and open mind, while simultaneously establishing realistic expectations regarding your loved one’s mental health, treatment, and even reaction to treatment, is an important step in helping your family member suffering from depression

Don’t try to fix your loved one’s problem on your own

If love, concern, support, and the best of intentions could cure depression or any other kind of mental illness, psychologists would be out of a job and mental illness wouldn’t impact millions of people all over the country. But none of the aforementioned can eradicate your loved one’s depression.

Instead, DBSA encourages family members tosupport their loved ones in seeking professional help. According to The Mayo Clinic, medications and psychotherapy areeffective treatment measure for most people with depression. Many people with depression also benefit from seeing a psychiatrist, psychologist or other mental health professional.

Don’t ask them to "snap out of it"

According to DBSA, "Your friend orfamily member can’t snap out of this illness any more than he or she could overcome diabetes, asthma, cancer, or high blood pressure without treatment." Personally, I know that telling me to "get over it" or "just be happy" or "stop whining" did nothing but make my depression worse, and reinforce the negative idea that I was alone in my mental illness.

The 37 worst celebrity Photoshop fails of all time

0
0

victoria's secret model elbow photoshop

Even before Photoshop existed in 1988, magazines carefully crafted the appearances of celebrities on their covers. Digital editing takes that to another degree and also helps celebrities make those changes themselves.

It's always been a problem. One of the major criticisms that celebrity photoshopping gets is that it promotes unrealistic body standards — especially for women. When it comes to social media, celebrities themselves are also sometimes complicit in posting Photoshopped selfies

Here are 37 celebrity Photoshops that turned into disasters.

Lena Dunham was clearly missing an arm in this 2014 Vogue cover shoot.

Other photos from the shoot were also heavily Photoshopped, but Dunham was okay with it. She told Slate that she saw the Photo shoot as a fantasy, not something that was supposed to emulate real life.

"Vogue isn't the place that we go to look at realistic women,"she said. "Vogue is the place that we go to look at beautiful clothes and fancy places and escapism and so I feel like if the story reflects me and I happen to be wearing a beautiful Prada dress and surrounded by beautiful men and dogs, what's the problem?"

In October of 2015, singer-actress Zendaya found her body looking different in Modeliste magazine.

She took to Instagram to reveal she was "shocked when I found my 19 year old hips and torso quite manipulated."

Fans called out this Kylie Jenner selfie for Photoshop.

Trump has used some bizarre words and phrases that left people scratching their heads — here are 8 of the worst

0
0

Donald Trump

President Donald Trump's distinctive style of rhetoric has been the subject of scrutiny since the moment he launched his presidential campaign.

Trump's words provoke a range of emotions, from pride to anger and fear. But in many cases, the prevailing response is simply confusion.

Here are some of the most head-scratching words and phrases Trump has used since 2015.

SEE ALSO: Trump and his White House have made some embarrassing spelling mistakes — here are the worst ones

'Big-league'

Perhaps the most distinctive of all of Trump's turns of phrase is "big-league."

He makes frequent use of the phrase in his improvised speeches at rallies, and for more than a year, prompted hysteria on social media over whether he was actually saying "bigly."

As linguist Ben Zimmer noted last year, "big league" is usually used as an adjective, so it was a bit strange to hear Trump use it as an adverb, like when he said he would "cut taxes big-league."

Trump put the confusion to bed in 2016 when he confirmed he was indeed saying "big-league."

'Covfefe'

Among all the words Trump has brought into the English lexicon, it's hard to find one more bizarre than "covfefe."

It first appeared in a late-night tweet Trump posted in May that read simply, "Despite the constant negative press covfefe."

Most observers assumed the word was a typo and that the tweet would be taken down, but it inexplicably stayed up until 6 a.m. the next day, giving online jokesters endless opportunities to speculate about its meaning.

Seemingly clued into the joke, Trump tweeted the next morning, "Who can figure out the true meaning of 'covfefe' ??? Enjoy!"

Press secretary Sean Spicer added to the confusion when a reporter asked him about the tweet, saying with a straight face, "I think the president and a small group of people know exactly what he meant."

'The cyber'

Trump raised some more eyebrows in 2016 when he made repeated references to "the cyber" at a presidential debate.

Prompted by moderator Lester Holt to discuss cyberwarfare and foreign hacking, Trump gave an extended riff that included the following gems:

"As far as the cyber, I agree to parts of what Secretary Clinton said."

"So we had to get very, very tough on cyber and cyberwarfare."

"The security aspect of cyber is very, very tough."

"We have so many things that we have to do better, Lester. And certainly cyber is one of them."

His perplexing use of the term cyber led The New York Daily News to call the English language"the true loser of the presidential debate."

NFL QB Power Rankings: Where all 32 starting QBs stand heading into Week 13

0
0

Carson Wentz

Using a loose formula, we ranked all 32 NFL starting quarterbacks.

Our formula is based on two advanced statistics: Football Outsiders' DYAR metric and ESPN's total QBR metric. We also considered other factors, including recent performance, job security, and overall track record.

This week, standout Thanksgiving performers like Case Keenum and Kirk Cousins are up, while Alex Smith and Dak Prescott are down. Below, find out where the rest of the league stands.

32. Geno Smith, New York Giants

Ranking after Week 10: N/A (replacing Eli Manning, No. 18)

Record as starter: N/A

DYAR rank: N/A

QBR rank: N/A

One thing to know: Smith just might be the most hated man in New York by the end of this week. After spending four unimpressive years with the Jets, he will replace Eli Manning as the Giants' starter, bringing an end to one of the longest streaks of consecutive starts in NFL history. At 2-9, the team is in need of a late-season jolt, but this West Virginia product doesn't seem likely to provide one.

31. Tom Savage, Houston Texans

Ranking after Week 10: 32

Record as starter: 1-4

DYAR rank: 29

QBR rank: N/A

One thing to know: Savage's weekly strip sack is quickly becoming a Houston tradition: he suffered another one against the Ravens on Monday night, one of three turnovers he committed. With the star rookie Deshaun Watson on injured reserve, next season can't come fast enough for this team.

30. DeShone Kizer, Cleveland Browns

Ranking after Week 10: 28

Record as starter: 0-10

DYAR rank: 32

QBR rank: 31

One thing to know: With a pair of 200-yard performances in his last three games, Kizer is slowly but surely demonstrating that he could eventually quarterback the hapless Browns to a win if given enough opportunities. That still might not be enough to hold onto the starting job for next season, but at least the 21-year-old has learned enough to show marked improvement in his rookie year.

The 50 best small companies to work for of 2017, according to employees

Periscope Data

For a lot of people, working for a small company is better than working for a large one. The best small companies offer a faster pace, more access to the top brass, and great opportunities for growth. But finding the right small company is key.

So job-hunting and employee-review site Comparably analyzed its database of over 3 million employee ratings on 30,000 US companies to come up with this list of the top small companies, based on overall employee satisfaction rating. Small companies were defined as firms with less than 500 employees.

For its reviews, Comparably conducts detailed questionnaires, asking about everything from compensation information to areas like "Are your company's meetings effective?" and "Do you have a mentor at work?"

To make the list, each company needed at least 10 employee reviews with at least 100 ratings (feedback on specific questions). Companies with employees who answered more questions were weighted more heavily than those with staffers that provided fewer answers. Comparably also limited the data to reviews written in 2017.

Tech companies, known for their high pay and perks, dominated the list.

Kaia Gerber is on her way to becoming a fashion icon — here are her best street-style moments of the year

0

kaia gerber

  • As the daughter of supermodel Cindy Crawford, Kaia Gerber was destined to take over the fashion world.
  • She's dominated runways all over and has made the streets her own catwalk to show off her edgy style.
  • Here's a roundup of the teen's best off-duty style moments this year.

Kaia Gerber made her runway debut at Calvin Klein in September — but her style off the runway is just as noteworthy.

The 16-year-old daughter of Cindy Crawford has pushed the envelope in edgy off-duty looks, working with the same stylists as the Hadid sisters to create picture-perfect ensembles.

Before Gerber ever walked a runway, she had street style looks down. In February, Gerber headed to a New York outing with her parents while wearing a pale pink turtleneck, combat boots and an oversized, faux fur jacket for a look equal parts edgy and sweet.

On the West Coast, Gerber has mastered the art of California cool, sporting ultrashort denim shorts with booties or sneakers.

Gerber holds true to her age demographic with oversized sweatshirts and simple T-shirts, opting for looks that would work for a teen who wasn't a rising supermodel.

Although Gerber often wears pieces from high-end brands — including those that she's walked the runway for — she also opts for less expensive shoe styles, like Converse sneakers, Doc Marten boots and Nike Cortez kicks.

While Gerber wears high heels on the runway and on the red carpet, she chooses flats in her daily life, stomping around in printed pants paired with combat boots or sneakers.

Although fashion month closed in early October, Gerber has continued her stylish streak.

The model returned to Los Angeles in a chic black bomber, checkered pants and white sneakers. And she continues to dress chicly for appearances, incorporating sleek plaid pieces and lots of athleisurewear elements.

Click through to see more of Kaia Gerber's chicest looks.
