How To Lie, Cheat, And Manipulate Your Way To Social Media Dominance

Ryan Holiday Trust Me I'm Lying

Ryan Holiday is a media mastermind, at least the way he tells it.

The college drop-out quit school at 19 but went on to become a PR advisor to Linkin Park and Tucker Max. He's best known as the main PR person for American Apparel.

At 25, Ryan authored his first book, called Trust Me, I'm Lying: Confessions of a Media Manipulator.

The book details Holiday's experience with the media business, particularly, "how blogs like Gawker, BuzzFeed, and The Huffington Post drive the media agenda" and how bloggers are "slaves to money, technology, and deadlines."

Holiday believes that, if you're cynical enough, you can shape much of what the public reads, sees, and watches, especially online.

The following is a slideshow excerpt of his book, published with permission from Holiday.

REPORT: $6 Million Worth Of Hair Donations To Locks Of Love Have Gone Missing

Locks of Love

Hold onto your ponytails: A new report alleges that Locks of Love— a well-known charity that makes wigs for children suffering from medical hair loss — has disclosure inadequacies that could total up to $6 million annually.

Locks of Love reportedly receives around 104,000 hair donations per year to make "hair prosthetics," according to the report by Nonprofit Investor, an organization that evaluates charities.

That should be enough to produce around 2,080 hairpieces, taking into account that 80% of donated hair can't be used (too short, gray, or bleached),  and that it takes six to 10 donations to make a Locks of Love wig.

But in 2011, Locks of Love made just 317 of its custom-fitted wigs, according to Nonprofit Investor.

If that's true, a whole lot of hair is unaccounted for.

Nonprofit Investor notes that since the retail value of each wig is between $3,500 and $6,000, according to Locks of Love's own calculation, the unaccounted hair could be worth some $6.6 million.

Locks of Love says on its website that it sells unusable hair to offset manufacturing costs.

But the nonprofit only disclosed $572,997 worth of hair sold on its 2011 income tax return, which still leaves over $6 million of hair missing from its public records, Nonprofit Investor notes.

Nonprofit Investor acknowledged in its report that it had a hard time finding exact figures for Locks of Love donations: It arrived at the 104,000 donations-per-year estimate from a 2004 USA Today article in which a former executive director said the charity received between 2,000 and 3,000 donations each week.

The exact percent of hair that goes unused is also unclear. 80% is an estimate a source told The New York Times in 2007, and Locks of Love again did not counter with a different figure. The charity also denied to Nonprofit Investor that there are 104,000 donations a year, but did not give another figure, the report said.

Locks of Love did not respond to our specific questions, but released the following statement from President Madonna Coffman: "To our knowledge we are the only organization that provides a vacuum fitted, custom prosthesis, as opposed to 'wig'” that can be mass produced and inventoried until needed. False claims based on inaccuracies, fabrications or assumptions will not interfere with our commitment to these families."

Nonprofit Investor notes that of the 62 nonprofits it has reviewed, this is the first time it has given a poor rating for disclosure inadequacies.

The 15 Colleges With The Highest-Paid NBA Alumni

$

carmelo anthony ny knicksOne of the biggest factors that goes into every major high school basketball recruit’s decision is whether his college of choice will help prepare him to get to the next level – the NBA.

In the end, the goal is to reach the league, and the higher he is drafted, the better.

Fans also love to argue about which programs are the best “NBA factories”.

Of course, there are a number of methods you can use to derive your results. You can go by the number of draft picks over a certain time period, or the number of players currently in the NBA. We thought we’d try something a bit different. We took the salaries for each player (according to ESPN) in the NBA in 2012-2013 and totaled them up, by college.

Some of the results were surprising.

15. Michigan State: $27,504,014 – 5 players

Surprisingly, Michigan State is the lone program from the Big Ten in the top 15. Carrying the load is Zach Randolph, who made $16.5 million this past season.

Jason Richardson, Shannon Brown, Alan Anderson and Draymond Green round out the Spartans’ representation in the NBA. If Green keeps playing well for the Warriors, he’ll eventually get a much better payday ($850,000).

14. Marquette: $29,453,621 – 6 players

Marquette’s inclusion is another example of how one superstar, in this case Dwyane Wade, can land you on this list.

Wade’s ridiculous salary (over $17 million) combined with modest (I realize how absurd the word sounds given the context) contributions from Wesley Matthews ($6.5 million) and Steve Novak ($4 million) accounts for almost all of the Golden Eagles’ NBA paychecks. Jimmy Butler could be the next to get paid after emerging in the 2013 playoffs.

13. Syracuse: $30,419,156 – 6 players

Carmelo Anthony made over $19 million this season, which makes up more than half the total salary of former Orange stars.

Wesley Johnson and Dion Waiters, two players who were both drafted No. 4 overall in different years (2010 and 2012, respectively), both made around $4 million as well. Donte Greene, Fab Melo and Kris Joseph account for the remainder.

los angeles county jail inmate prison

The United States keeps 2.26 million people behind bars, by far the world's highest incarceration rate.

So many prisoners are expensive, costing taxpayers $68 billion annually.

So many prisoners are also exceeding available infrastructure, with capacity crises in Texas, California, Arizona, and other states. The war on drugs has quadrupled the number of prisoners behind bars since 1980. Nonviolent offenders now make up 60% of America's prison population.

Overcrowding has led to rising levels of violence and unsafe and uncomfortable living conditions.

An unprecedented 2.2 million Americans live behind bars.

10 Things The Samsung Galaxy S4 Can Do That The iPhone Can't (GOOG, AAPL)

samsung galaxy s 4 with iphone 5

Samsung's new flagship phone, the Galaxy S4, is packed with a ton of extras –– almost to a fault.

When the phone first came out, reviewers criticized Samsung for shoving too many complex and glitchy extras in the phone.

But there are some features in the GS4 that do work well and could be useful, and you won't find them in the GS4's chief rival, the iPhone.

Let's take a look at some of the best features in the GS4 that you won't find in the iPhone.

It has a built-in infrared blaster that can be used as a universal remote to control your TV. (The IR blaster is that little black dot at the top of the phone.) The phone also has a special app that pulls in data from your cable or satellite provider and can suggest shows you may like to watch.

It has a near field communication (NFC) chip that lets your phone talk to other devices with NFC. This means you can use your phone to make mobile payments, swap content like photos between phones just by tapping them together, or pair your phone with a stereo with a tap.

You can add extra storage to your Galaxy S4 if you insert a standard Micro SD card. They're pretty cheap too. You can add an extra 32 GB of storage for about $20.

How To Defend Yourself With Your iPhone (AAPL)

iphone knife

There are apps to help you tackle all kinds of tasks, from exploring the surface of the planet to managing your to-do list to finding your stolen phone.

But for those overly concerned with safety, they'll notice that none exist to keep you safe from an attacker. It's not much of a problem that software can solve.

Enter the hardware.

If you want to deck out your iPhone so that it becomes a (mostly-relevant) tool for self-defense, you actually have a few options.

A taser case will keep you safe.

What inspires safety more than knowing that you can discharge 650,000 volts on deserving attackers? The Yellow Jacket Case has an integrated taser that can do just that.

Price:$139

Brass knuckles can do some damage.

This is perfect as a means to make sure you don't lose your grip on your phone and also makes for some nice brass knuckles. In fact, porn star Jenna Jameson used a similar case to attack her assistant.

Price:Starting at $120

Go with pepper spray!

A mainstay of personal defense, this case marries a can of pepper spray with your phone so you've always got something up your sleeve (or in your pocket, or in your purse).

Prince Harry arrived in the U.S. last week for a cross-country publicity tour.

He started in Washington D.C., where he visited the White House and wounded soldiers, before heading west to Colorado Springs and Denver, where he met with athletes and helped kick off the Warrior Games.

On the last leg of his trip he returned east to New York and New Jersey, where he visited the Superstorm Sandy-ravaged boardwalk.

The Prince finishes his trip tomorrow in Greenwich, Conn, where he will compete in a polo match before flying home to the UK.

Of course, the press was on hand to capture every moment of the Prince's whirlwind tour. There were some serious moments, such as when Prince Harry visited Arlington National Cemetery. But overally, it looks as if he's having a blast.

Prince Harry kicked off his visit in Washington DC, where he met First Lady Michelle Obama.

He hung out with a bunch of kids who were at the White House to make Mother's Day presents.

He also checked out an exhibition of anti-landmine photography with Senator John McCain at the Russell Senate office building.

AT&T Predicted The Future In These 1993 Ads (T)

AT&T Future Video

In 1993, AT&T released a series of commercials grouped by the theme "you will."

They were all about things people would be doing in the future.

Unlike most futuristic concepts, these turned out to be surprisingly accurate. True, there are no far-out ideas like flying cars, but there is plenty of great stuff that was mind-blowing in 1993.

Today, most of this stuff is commonplace.

Revisiting these predictions is a good reminder of how far we've come in a very short period of time.

"Have you ever borrowed a book from thousands of miles away?" asks AT&T...

In 2007, the answer became yes. Amazon introduced the Kindle, allowing people to easily download books. It wasn't heavy on "borrowing," but Amazon is adding more borrowing features.

"Cross the country without stopping for directions," says AT&T.

The 11 Most Controversial Places On Google Maps

Google Maps

Google's incredible market share puts it in a strange position of responsibility, as the world was reminded earlier this month when Google.ps changed "Palestinian Territories" to "Palestine."

Nowhere can this impact on geopolitics be seen better than in Google Maps, a major product into which Mountain View keeps pumping moneyWhile Google does its best to avoid controversy, for example showing multiple territorial claims in the Golan Heights, sometimes they screw up. Other times there is simply no good answer.

In light of reports of an upcoming redesign, we thought it was time to take a look at the most controversial places on Google Maps.

Images from Google Earth sparked protests in Bahrain in 2006 and again in 2011.

Bahrain's oppressed and overcrowded Shiite majority began using Google Maps and Google Earth to view palaces and other estates that make up 95% of the country.

The NYT's Tom Friedman later used these images in a list of "not-so-obvious forces" that fed the mass revolt.

Google was accused of "removing" the country of Georgia from its maps in 2008.

When you searched for Georgia on Google Maps in 2008, you just found a big white space.

There were accusations that Google may have removed the information in a bid to remain "neutral" during the Georgia-Russia crisis — some noted that Google's Russian-born co-founder Sergey Brin might even have something to do with it.

Google responded by saying that they never had any map data for Georgia. At some point in the intervening years, the gap has been filled in.

Dramatic Pictures From The Early Days Of Israel

The notion of the "Land of Israel" ("Eretz Yisrael" known in Hebrew) has been sacred to the Jewish people since Biblical times.

Various empires — including those of the Persians, Romans, Umayyads, and Ottomans — conquered the area until World War I when Britain took control of the area and subsequently declared it Mandatory Palestine in 1920.

Modern Jewish migration to the area (at the time Ottoman-ruled Palestine) began in 1881, and the movement to establish a Jewish state in the Land of Israel formally began with the birth of the World Zionist Organization in 1887.

On May 15th, 1948, the territory officially became an independent country: "Israel."

In 1917, during World War I, Zionist volunteers assisted Britain's conquest of Palestine. Jewish immigration to the area increased thereafter.

After World War II, Jewish Holocaust survivors and refugees immigrated to "Mandatory Palestine," as the territory was called under British rule.

In the two years after 1946, more than 100,000 people arrived.

Nike TW14

In a case of perfect timing, Nike announced that it has a new model of Tiger Woods' signature golf shoe coming out on June 7.

Woods has been on fire this year, winning four of the seven times he's teed it up.

Nike sent along a pair for me to review. I'll get to the review in the weeks to come. For now, I have an unboxing and a snap reaction to the shoes.

I have last year's model. After putting these new shoes on, and walking around the office, I think new model is more comfortable, and more breathable.

On the looks side of things, though, I have to give the slight nod to last year's model, at least at first blush.

I don't know what they're like on the course, though. I'll have a detailed report shortly. In the meantime, enjoy some shoe porn.

The Jersey Shore Roller Coaster That Was Mangled In Hurricane Sandy Is Finally Being Torn Down [PICTURES]

One of the most iconic images of Superstorm Sandy's aftermath was the Jersey Shore's Jet Star roller coaster, which appeared mangled and submerged in the Atlantic Ocean.

Now, six months later, it is finally being demolished.

The project is currently underway in Seaside Heights and will be completed by Thursday, Casino Pier spokeswoman Toby Wolf told CBS New York.

"[We're] ripping it out of there and getting everything out of the ocean," Wolf said. "[It's] pretty close to shore and that's a safety hazard for swimmers, surf."

1010 WINS' Steve Sandberg reported that a section of the roller coaster will be preserved to serve as a permanent memorial when the damaged pier is finally rebuilt, which could take up to a year, according to CBS New York.

The attraction will be replaced with an appropriately named roller coaster: The Super Storm, according to the Wall Street Journal.

“We hope that it’s perceived in a positive way, that we’re back, we know the force of Mother Nature, and that we respect that, and this is our way of celebrating,” Seaside Heights Mayor Bill Akers told The WSJ.

The partially-submerged roller coaster has been ogled by onlookers since the October 29th storm washed it out to sea. In January, one man even climbed to the top of the coaster, raised an American flag, and was subsequently arrested by police.

A reminder of what it looked like before demolition:

23 Of The Best Pieces Of Advice Ever Given To Graduates

$

Sheryl Sandberg - Harvard Class Day

A great commencement or class-day speech sticks with you forever. You remember it when you accept for your first job, and when you quit it.

Too many, unfortunately, offer the same warmed-over clichés, like "dream big,""work hard," or "follow your passion."

But there are some lessons that are truly worth remembering, or so well-said that they stick in the memory longer than just about anything else.

We've collected some of the greatest speeches and pieces of advice, worth reading and listening to for any grad, or anyone looking for guidance.

Links to the full speeches and transcripts are provided, when available.

SALMAN KHAN: Live your life like it's your second chance.

From his 2012 commencement address at MIT:

"... Imagine yourself in 50 years. You’re in your early 70s, near the end of your career. You’re sitting on your couch, having just watched the State of the Union holographic address by President Kardashian.

"You begin to ponder your life. The career successes, how you’ve been able to provide for your family. You’ll think of all the great moments with your family and friends. But then you start to think about all of the things you wished you had done just a little differently, your regrets. I can guess at what they might be.

"Sitting in 2062, you wish that you had spent more time with your children. That you had told your spouse how much you loved them more frequently. That you could have even one more chance to hug your parents and tell them how much you appreciate them before they passed. That you could have smiled more, laughed more, danced more and created more. That you better used the gifts you were given to empower others and make the world better.

"Just as you’re thinking this, a genie appears from nowhere and says, “I have been eavesdropping on your regrets. They are valid ones. I can tell you are a good person so I am willing to give you a second chance if you really want one.” You say “Sure” and the genie snaps his fingers.

"All of a sudden you find yourself right where you are sitting today. It is June 8, 2012, at Killian Court. You are in your shockingly fit and pain-free 20-something body and begin to realize that it has really happened. You really do have the chance to do it over again. To have the same career successes and deep relationships. But, now you can optimize. You can laugh more, dance more and love more. Your parents are here again so it is your chance to love them like you wished you had done the first time. You can be the source of positivity that you wished you had been the first time around.

"So now I stand here, once again deeply honored to be here. Excited by what you, the MIT class of 2012 — both undergrads and graduate students — the young wizards of our time — a time like no other in human history — will do with your second chance."

NEIL GAIMAN: Make good art, and do the stuff that only you can do.

From his 2012 commencement speech to the University of the Arts:

"I hope you'll make mistakes. If you're making mistakes, it means you're out there doing something. And the mistakes in themselves can be useful. I once misspelled Caroline, in a letter, transposing the A and the O, and I thought, Coraline looks like a real name ...’

"And remember that whatever discipline you are in, whether you are a musician or a photographer, a fine artist or a cartoonist, a writer, a dancer, a designer, whatever you do you have one thing that's unique. You have the ability to make art.

"And for me, and for so many of the people I have known, that's been a lifesaver. The ultimate lifesaver. It gets you through good times and it gets you through the other ones.

"Life is sometimes hard. Things go wrong, in life and in love and in business and in friendship and in health and in all the other ways that life can go wrong. And when things get tough, this is what you should do.

"Make good art.

"I'm serious. Husband runs off with a politician? Make good art. Leg crushed and then eaten by mutated boa constrictor? Make good art. IRS on your trail? Make good art. Cat exploded? Make good art. Somebody on the Internet thinks what you do is stupid or evil or it's all been done before? Make good art. Probably things will work out somehow, and eventually time will take the sting away, but that doesn't matter. Do what only you do best. Make good art.

"Make it on the good days too.

"... while you are at it, make your art. Do the stuff that only you can do."

SHERYL SANDBERG: If you’re offered a seat on a rocket ship, don’t ask what seat. Just get on.

From her 2012 speech at Harvard Business School's class day:

"As the world becomes more connected and less hierarchical, traditional career paths are shifting as well. In 2001, after working in the government, I moved out to Silicon Valley to try finding a job. My timing wasn’t really that good.

"The bubble had crashed, small companies were closing, big companies were laying people off. One woman CEO looked at me and said, we wouldn’t even think about hiring someone like you. After awhile I had a few offers and I had to make a decision, so what did I do?

"I am MBA trained, so I made a spreadsheet. I listed my jobs in the columns and my criteria in the rows, and compared the companies and the missions and the roles. One of the jobs on that sheet was to become Google’s first business unit general manager, which sounds good now, but at the time no one thought consumer internet companies could ever make money.

"I was not sure there was actually a job there at all. Google had no business units, so what was there to generally manage. And the job was several levels lower than jobs I was being offered at other companies. So I sat down with Eric Schmidt, who had just become the CEO, and I showed him the spread sheet and I said, this job meets none of my criteria. He put his hand on my spreadsheet and he looked at me and said, 'Don’t be an idiot.'

"Excellent career advice. And then he said, Get on a rocket ship. When companies are growing quickly and they are having a lot of impact, careers take care of themselves. And when companies aren’t growing quickly or their missions don’t matter as much, that’s when stagnation and politics come in. If you’re offered a seat on a rocket ship, don’t ask what seat. Just get on."

Angelina Jolie red carpet

On Tuesday, Angelina Jolie published an op-ed in the New York Times revealing she has undergone a preventative double mastectomy.

The news was a surprise, for however hard Jolie tries to keep her private life just that, the actress and her fiancé Brad Pitt are often front page fodder.

From her scandalous beginning with Pitt to her most current medical confession, see how Angelina Jolie went from wild child indie actress to celebrated humanitarian and arguably the most famous woman in the word.

Angelina Jolie was born in 1975 in Los Angeles to actor parents, Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand. She was raised primarily by her mother, who quit her career to raise Jolie and her brother, essentially as a single mother.

Jolie made her screen debut as a child alongside her father Jon Voight in "Lookin' to Get Out" in 1982.

But her film career truly began a decade later with the low-budget production "Cyborg 2" in 1993.

TEST DRIVE: Chevrolet Has Finally Made The Impala Great Again

2014 Chevy Chevrolet Impala

Once among the best-selling cars in the country, the Chevrolet Impala has been reduced in recent years to a fleet car, bought mainly by rental companies and driven by vacationers and business travelers.

But Chevy is talking a big game when it comes to the latest incarnation of the flagship sedan. To see if the fully revamped 2014 Impala can compete with cars like the Ford Taurus and Toyota Avalon, I spent a weekend with the new ride.

I was very impressed. The front-wheel drive Impala is a nice-looking, if not dazzling car. It's comfortable, has a ton of room, and is full of excellent details (like an actual 12 volt outlet!).

It's not a car meant for people with young kids, or for those who want a sporty ride. But for those who just want to get around in comfort and relative style, it's an excellent option.

The 2014 Impala starts for $35,770. Our well-equipped model cost $39,510.

Let's start with a quick look at the past glory of the Impala. Here's the 1958 Bel Air Sport Coupe version. It's gorgeous.

Cars like the 1964 convertible are the reason my grandmother was impressed when I told her I had an Impala for the weekend.

I guess she forgot that by 1996, the Impala looked like this.

Gusanos Mezcal worms insects as foodA new 200-page report from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations says that we should all be adding insects into our diet.

Even though we're raised to believe bugs in our food is a bad thing, insects are chock full of protein and nutrients, and could help reduce world hunger and food shortages.

Plus, bugs actually don't taste that bad. Plenty of world cultures eat beetles, wasps, caterpillars, grasshoppers, worms, and cicadas daily and enjoy it.

So get over your mental hurdles and see how people eat bugs around the world.

The 10 Best Infinity Pools In The Caribbean

$

Hotel Le Toiny St. Barts infinity poolThe beach, the pools, the view – these are major reasons why we travel to the Caribbean.

And when we can get all in one, that’s ideal.

So we scoured the islands to find the best infinity pools in the Caribbean.

These spots – with gorgeous views overlooking the ocean – are perfect for sitting back, relaxing, and soaking up that sun.

Four Seasons Resort Nevis

This Four Seasons sits on a large, attractive beach on the small island of Nevis.

The gorgeous rooms here may be the highlight, with up-to-date technology, massive bathrooms, and pretty yellow-and-blue decor.

But the reflection pool, an adults-only pool overlooking the ocean, is a major perk as well. Poolside guests can enjoy free snacks, as well as poolside lunch and drink service, throughout the day.

The hotel also features two other slightly larger pools as well.

Strawberry Hill, Jamaica

This former coffee plantation nestled among the steep and winding hills of Jamaica’s famous Blue Mountain is a little oasis above the very un-resort-like city of Kingston.

The resort offers plenty of intimacy and privacy, with just 12 cottages on more than 26 acres.

It also has the features of a larger property: an expansive spa, a breezy restaurant and bar, lush gardens, and an infinity pool.

It may be small, but this pool offers gorgeous views, and lacks the rowdy children of many other Jamaican resorts.

lamborghini 50th anniversary event

Lamborghini just turned 50 years old, and the luxury car maker celebrated in style.

To mark what it dubbed "100 years of innovation in half the time," Lambo organized the largest gathering of its cars ever, for a six-day, 750-mile drive through Italy.

Owners of nearly 350 cars from 27 countries gathered on Thursday, May 7 in Milan for the Grande Giro, or Grand Tour.

After stops in Rome, Pisa, and Bologna along the way, they made their way to Sant'Agata Bolognese, the home of Lamborghini.

There, prizes were given for the most impressive rides, and the world saw the reveal of the most outrageous Lamborghini ever.

The celebration kicked off in Milan.
