Walmart employees share 7 things they want to tell customers, but can't

Walmart employee

  • Walmart store employees aren't always able to speak their minds when dealing with customers.
  • Business Insider spoke with a number of associates to find out what they'd like to tell shoppers, but can't.
  • For one thing, an employee said, check the website before going to the store: If the price is lower on Walmart.com, the store will price-match.

Walmart stores employees have something to say to shoppers.

But they can't always share those thoughts with customers — not if they want to keep their jobs. Business Insider spoke with a number of Walmart associates, and scoured the net for posts from employees, to find out what they'd like to tell customers.

Some shared thoughts on habits and behaviors they'd like shoppers to drop. Others gave explanations on why certain things are the way they are at the store.

Here's what Walmart employees would like to share with shoppers, but can't:

Look out for store associates who are being 'aggressively' nice

Keep an eye out for intensely friendly associates in areas of the store where valuables are sold, like the electronics department.

In a 2018 Reddit AMA, a Walmart department manager described how associates in the electronics section of the store take steps to prevent shop-lifting.

"They're instructed to use 'aggressive hospitality' and ensure every customer is asked if they need anything — so they know they're being watched," the manager wrote. "This is just based on my experiences in my store, other stores may differ."

Don't expect associates to know where everything is

One employee from Jacksonville told Business Insider that they wished they could tell shoppers, "I don't know where everything is in the store."

Clean up after yourself

If you encounter a particularly messy Walmart, one employee said not to blame associates.

"It's really their fellow customers who refuse to clean up after themselves," an employee with 12 years of experience told Business Insider.

"No, people aren't really hired to clean up after you — it's just another hiccup added to our workload because people won't sort their own mess," the associate added. "Do you really think associates make that mess and leave it there?"

9 things you should never be afraid to say no to at work

girls friends chat

  • Saying "no" at work is sometimes necessary. The key is knowing when to push back.
  • Rejecting requests is a balancing act — you'll need to weigh your current workload and team goals against the needs and wants of others.
  • Some factors to consider include the amount of work or effort that would be required, your values and time commitments, and the deadline.

For my first job out of college, I worked as a writer at a financial startup in downtown San Francisco. It was one of those offices that had an open floor plan, catered lunches, unlimited paid time off ... and sky-high expectations.

Everyone seemed to be working on interesting side projects, helping out their coworkers, leading team meetings, and brainstorming hackathon projects every day. It was inspiring to see people who were so engaged with their work. So like Shonda Rhimes, I decided to suppress my introverted tendencies to have a "year of yes."

But juggling the needs and wants of my boss, my team, my coworkers, and the company alongside my own was exhausting. At a certain point, something had to give, and I had to learn to say "no." The key was figuring out when to push back.

Here are nine things it's totally reasonable to say "no" to at work:

SEE ALSO: My company banned meetings and emails for one day a week — and it had a big impact on how we work

1. Ineffective tasks

Former IBM executive and bestselling author Catherine DeVrye wrote in her book that "we have always done it that way" are the "seven most expensive words in business." But the cost of ineffective assignments doesn't just apply to your company's bottom line. It impacts your work, too.

2. Things that don't clearly contribute to your goals and responsibilities

You deserve to know what is expected of you and what you're working toward — something I didn't always do at my first job.

3. Unnecessary meetings

A survey by the Harvard Business Review found that 65% of respondents said meetings kept them from getting work done, and 71% said meetings were "unproductive and inefficient."

7 great movies you can watch on Netflix this weekend

valkyrie thor ragnarok

Disney's big Netflix deal is still in effect, which means all the wonders of the Marvel Cinematic Universe come to the streaming service after their theatrical runs.

This week, "Thor: Ragnarok" has become available for you to watch at your heart's content — but it's not the only great movie in Netflix's catalog.

Every week, we comb through Netflix's selection to find you a handful of movies to watch over the weekend.

We select a few that have came onto the service within the past week and mix in a couple of old favorites you might have missed.

From "Thor: Ragnarok" to Alfonso Cuarón's coming-of-age story "Y Tu Mamá También," these are some awesome movies on Netflix that you can watch over the weekend.

Here are 7 movies on Netflix you should definitely check out or revisit (along with their Rotten Tomatoes scores and why you should watch):

SEE ALSO: All the TV shows coming in summer 2018 — and whether you should watch them

"Thor: Ragnarok" (2017)

Netflix description: To save Asgard from a bloodthirsty goddess of death, the mighty Thor will have to battle his way to freedom and find a way back home.

Critic score: 92%

Audience score: 87%

If I could, I would just list "Thor: Ragnarok" seven times this week.

"Thor: Ragnarok" is a masterpiece of action and comedy filmmaking, and essentially created its own genre. It offers a fresh and absurd take on an overdone, often-dull genre. It was one of the highlights of 2017, and one of the best, most original films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"Se7en" (1995)

Netflix description: A seasoned homicide detective and his new partner are on a desperate hunt for a killer whose gruesome crimes are based on the Seven Deadly Sins.

Critic score: 80%

Audience score: 95%

"Se7en" was the movie that proved David Fincher was on his way to becoming one of the greatest modern directors. It's a bit slow at times, and in hindsight might strange to watch given the accusations of sexual misconduct against the film's stars (Morgan Freeman and Kevin Spacey), but it's still one of the best dramas from the 90s.

"Heat" (1995)

Netflix description: As a detective and a thief face off, they learn how much they need each other — and that the line between cop and criminal isn't always well-defined.

Critic score: 86%

Audience score: 94%

This crime thriller is a bit lengthy, but it stands the test of time for its tight writing, unforgettable direction from Michael Mann, and its stunning performances from Al Pacino and Robert De Niro.

The best stylish sneakers for women

best stylish sneakers for women

The Insider Pick:

  • With tons of incredible sneakers on the market, it’s hard to narrow down your options. If you have to choose just one pair, make it the Allbirds Wool Runners. They’re comfortable, chic, and so convenient.

I used to be That Girl — the one who thought high heels were the only “fashionable” shoes. It took, oh, about twenty years of blisters and aching toes before I finally realized how ridiculous I was being. There’s nothing stylish about trailing behind a group of your friends because the stilettos you’ve had on since 9 a.m. are slicing into your ankles like some "Game of Thrones" torture device.

Now that I’ve fully embraced the sneaker, my feet have never been happier. The right pair of sneakers can look amazing with so many different looks, from trousers to dresses. Best of all,  they literally save you from a world of hurt.

What constitutes a “stylish” sneaker will surely depend on your individual style. But, by and large, the options on this list are easy to wear with many different outfits, comfortable enough to commute in, and won’t give you flamin’ hot blisters whenever you have to walk longer than a mile.

Here are the best stylish sneakers you can buy:

Read on in the slides below to check out our top picks.

The best stylish sneakers overall

Why you'll love them: Allbirds' cult-favorite Wool Runners are the kind of shoes you never really want to take off because they're simple enough to wear with most anything, comfortable enough to take to the gym, and machine washable.

Allbirds claims to offer “the world’s most comfortable shoe” and, from all the glowing reviews I’ve read online and heard in real life, they might be onto something. The brand’s initial product, the Wool Runners, are like a traditional runner’s sneaker only made of wool. I know, your feet are sweating just thinking about it.

But don’t let this unconventional detail throw you — people love these sneakers. Allbirds uses Merino wool from New Zealand that they claim is “temperature-regulating and moisture-wicking, all without an irritating scratchiness” for the Wool Runners. So, no, this isn’t the footwear equivalent of an itchy Christmas sweater.

The Allbirds Wool Runners are revered by comfy footwear experts. PopSugar Fitness editor Dominique Michelle Astorina described them as “incredibly soft, lightweight, and breathable, making for exceedingly comfortable wear” and insisted they didn’t smell funky even after a few wears sans socks.

She did note, however, that despite the name, “they're not quite suited for running,” so keep that in mind if you’re a hard-core jogger. On the flip side, the Insider Picks team also gave the Wool Runners top marks for comfort and convenience, so it seems the positives outweigh the negatives with these sneaks.

My favorite detail? These shoes are machine washable. Yep, you can toss ‘em in the wash to keep them looking fresh, which is especially awesome if you’ve got your eye on one of the lighter shades.

Pros: Moisture-wicking, machine washable, Merino wool helps control temperature and odor, moves with your foot

Cons: Not a hardcore exercise shoe

Buy the Allbirds Wool Runners for $95

The best sporty sneakers

Why you'll love them: Adidas’ Stan Smiths are an enduring hit because they go with everything. Floaty dresses? Check! Jeans and a sweater? Double check!

You can spot a pair of Adidas’ Stan Smiths from a mile away, especially in the unmistakable white and green colorway (though there are other options) and with the perforated side detailing. They don’t seem like they’d be the most versatile shoes in your wardrobe, and yet I think you’ll find they go with more outfits than you’d imagine.

Stan Smiths have been around since the 1970s, but they don’t look dated in the least. They have a slightly vintage look, but if they’ve basically been cool for forty years, I’d say these make a solid investment. Plus, at $75, they won’t totally break the bank.

The women’s Stan Smiths have 310 reviews on the Adidas website and come recommended by 92% of shoppers. One fan writes, “I love these shoes, they're so comfortable and they look very nice on; however, I recommend you go down a full size or half size because they fit very large since they're based off of a men's shoe design.”

Indeed, the men’s version is extremely similar and boasts almost 4,000 reviews, the majority of which give the kicks 5 stars. Although the aforementioned green and white version is probably the most iconic, the shoes come in several other colors.

Pros: Iconic design, comfortable, perforated side detail for temperature control

Cons: Reviews on the women’s shoe suggest sizing down

Buy Adidas Stan Smiths for $75

The best classic sneakers

Why you'll love them: If you wore Converse All Star Canvas Sneakers in high school, I have good news — they’re still cool!

Converse Chuck Taylor All Star’s were all the rage with a certain kind of teenager back when I was in school, and the All-Star Canvas Low Top Sneaker was the most iconic style.  I never owned a pair myself, but I did “borrow” some that didn’t really fit me from a friend for a few months. Wearing them made me feel like a cooler version of myself.

Like Stan Smiths, Converse have never really gone out of style. They still might make you want to write Jimmy Eat World lyrics on the rubber soles and tell your mom that she just doesn’t “get” you, but hey, at least you’ll look cool doing it!

Besides, these shoes have history on their side. According to Complex, this style of Converse “has been in constant production since 1917, and has gone virtually unchanged since 1949.” They were initially popular with basketball players before becoming synonymous with the alternative music scene. Complex reported that, as of 2013, a pair was still sold “every 43 seconds.”

The Canvas Low Top is perhaps the most versatile Converse style and perhaps the most comfortable, too. 70% of the Amazon ratings give it 5 stars. One reviewer writes, “I LOVE Chucks. I have about 8 or 9 pairs. They are my go-to shoe. I wear them with everything., skirts, dresses, jeans ... I like them because they hold up well and are comfy right out of the box.”

Pros: Classic style that goes with anything, light canvas material, comes in a bunch of colors

Cons: Reviewers suggest adding an insole for additional arch support

Tesla Model 3

  • The Model 3 is Tesla's first foray into the mass market.
  • The Tesla Model 3 starts at $35,000. However, the smaller battery pack need for the base Model 3 won't be in production until the end of the year.
  • Currently, only the $44,000 longer range Model 3 is available. Our test car's as-tested price is $57,500.
  • The Model 3 is packed with really interesting features such as a minimalist interior, advanced infotainment, and Tesla Autopilot.

There have been few cars more sought after in recent memory than the Tesla Model 3. It's Tesla's first foray into the mass market after dominating the luxury electric vehicle segment for much of the past decade.

Recently, Business Insider had the chance to spend a few hours with a brand new Model 3 on the road in and around New York City.

We've had the chance to spend time with both the Model S and the Model X. So we were quite keen to get our hands on the Model 3.

The standard Model 3 with 220 miles of range starts at $35,000. But the smaller battery pack for the 220-mile version won't be in production until the end of the year. As a result, Tesla is currently delivering only the top spec edition with 310 miles of range. Our longer range test car started at $44,000, but with additional options cost $57,500.

A $78,000 all-wheel-drive, high-performance version of the Model 3 will soon be available as well.

As you may expect, Tesla packed its most "affordable" offering to date with more than a few really cool and interesting features. These range from a striking minimalist interior to its app-based control system.

Here's a rundown of just some of the most impressive features available on the Tesla Model 3.

SEE ALSO: We drove a $65,000 Audi Q7 and a $60,000 Volvo XC90 to see which is a better luxury SUV — here's the verdict

1. The Tesla Model 3's minimalist interior. It's virtually devoid of buttons. The design is simple, functional, and easily upgradeable in the future.

2. Almost everything runs through the Model 3's massive 15-inch central touchscreen infotainment display. This system is effectively the brain of the car. It also replaces the instrument cluster.

3. The Model FM and internet streaming radio was designed and developed in-house by Tesla. It sounds terrific.

I'm a 35-year-old working dad with 3 months to get in the best shape of my life — here's how I plan to do it

$

Running

  • Running 40 kilometers is hard for anyone, especially a 35-year-old working dad who's used to running a few times a week.
  • In late August, I’ll be running a 40K trail run through the Swiss and French Alps with over 7,500 feet of elevation gain.
  • I need to get in mountain marathon shape while balancing work, raising two kids, and about a thousand other things.
  • Here’s how I’m going to do it.

I've always been athletic, from grade school soccer to high school wrestling to summer hikes, but I never got into a consistent adult fitness regimen until shortly before my 27th birthday.

I began running two to three miles four or five times a week, as well as paying more attention to what I ate. Within a couple months, I was trimming down, the exercise became easier, and I was feeling better about myself in general. I considered myself pretty fit for a 35-year-old dad with two kids who works full time and does lots of household work.

But then a sportswear brand offered to sponsor my participation in a 40-kilometer UTMB Mount-Blanc footrace through the Swiss and French Alps at the end of this summer. Agreeing to the race will be the only easy part of the process, because I am nowhere near mountain-marathon fitness.

The race route leads from Martigny-Combe in Switzerland to Chamonix in France, and it's going to be gorgeous and treacherous in equal measure. In an attempt to cover the 24.8 miles and 7,500 feet of vertical gain, I need to be in the best shape of my life — and more.

After speaking with a bunch of professional trail runners and doing a lot of reading, here’s how I’m preparing for a 40K mountain footrace.

SEE ALSO: The ideal morning routine for someone who hates mornings

1. Putting in the miles

By the middle of the summer, I need to consistently run 40 to 50 miles per week. Not in one session, mind you — that would be madness. But over the course of each week, I want to log at least 40 miles, with my goal set at 50. That means my current daily run, which is just under three miles round-trip, will need to triple in length.

2. Dropping extra weight

I don't have a lot of visible extra weight to lose, but I could drop 10 pounds and all of it would be fat. Ten fewer pounds to carry up and down miles of mountain trails sounds good to me.

I'll be burning more calories than usual through the training, so I will likely have to consume more, not less, for optimal development. So for the first time in my life, I'll actually have to calculate my calorie intake and burn off for a while this summer.

3. Building specific muscles

Running on mostly flat suburban streets is great for cardio health, but for the ups and downs of the Alps, I need to develop my quads and core to a much greater degree. There aren't many appreciable hills near where I live, so I'll need to use weights and workouts instead of terrain.

8 signs people are intimidated by you — even if you don't realize it

$

jessica jones scared

You can't always know exactly what someone thinks about you, but oftentimes there are some signs that, if you can pick up on them, will give you a clue as to what they're thinking. And though you might not consider yourself an especially intimidating or scary person, if you pay close attention, you might notice that some of the people with whom you're dealing are sending you signs that they're a bit afraid of you.

Though sometimes it might be advantageous for you for people to be a little bit intimidated, chances are you're not looking for everyone to be scared of you all the time. So recognizing these signs might tell you that it's time to reevaluate things (or maybe not).

They won't make eye contact

There are a whole number of reasons as to why someone might not want to make eye contact with you. Maybe they're embarrassed, maybe they're saying something that's making them feel vulnerable, maybe there's a reason as to why it makes them feel uncomfortable, or maybe, just maybe, they're feeling a little bit uneasy around you. Sharon Saline, PsyD, a clinical psychologist in private practice in Northampton, Massachusetts, told INSIDER that this is a "physical manifestation of fear."

They turn slightly away from you.

Saline said that this too is a sign of intimidation. "These signs clearly demonstrate that interpersonal contact feels unsafe and may well be unwanted," she explained. "Without saying as much, someone is showing you that they feel intimidated and uncomfortable."

If someone's turned away like they're wanting to run, that can definitely be a sign that they want to get out of the conversation and can very well indicate that they're uneasy around you.

They speak quietly.

Even if they seem fine, the way that someone speaks to you can also give you insight into whether or not they're comfortable around you — or might be afraid. Saline noted that speaking quietly can be another physical symptom that someone is afraid. And Farrah Hauke, PsyD, a licensed psychologist in Scottsdale, Arizona, told INSIDER that if their voice gets higher, that too can be an indication that they're nervous, fearful, or intimidated.

11 surprising foods you can eat on the Keto diet

$

wine

Although a lot of mainstream diets definitely involve calorie counting and portion control, you’d be surprised to know that the keto diet isn’t like most diets, especially since since it’s more about eating a certain way to get your body into a ketogenic state.

And yes, counting and managing carb intake is apart of the definitely a key part to keeping the body in a prolonged state of ketosis, but keto devotees can still enjoy a variety of different foods (that are actually good for you) without any overwhelming guilt.

To see what crowd-pleasing munchies are actually keto-safe (we’re talking buffalo wings, pizza, and more) we spoke to some experts about all those surprising foods you can actually eat on the popular diet. Here are some of their favorites below.

Buffalo wings

Kelly Bower, licensed integrative nutritionist and executive chef at PALETA told INSIDER that buffalo wings can be keto-approved, however, it’s important to customize a healthier version at home. Although bottled dressings and wing sauces can help save time, they also can be rich in sugar and additives that aren’t exactly keto-safe.

Instead, Bower recommended dressing up lean pasture-raised, bone-in-wings with hot sauce and ghee (helps decrease unhealthy cholesterol levels) for a heart-healthy version of everyone’s favorite appetizer. And if you are looking for a keto-friendly dip to pair with your wings, Bower suggested making your own herbed mayonnaise with an egg, olive or coconut oil, lemon juice, salt, and pepper.

Guacamole

Keto definitely encourages the consumption of healthy fats, making this avocado dip the perfect treat after a long day at the office according to Daniels. To serve your guacamole, she recommended spreading it on cheese or eating it as a dip with fresh vegetables.

Pizza

Yes, pizza can also be keto-safe, but Bower said that you’ll want to use cauliflower crust (can be made homemade or found in the freezer section) made with almond flour instead of carb-filled pizza dough. And instead of using sugar-rich pizza sauces, she recommended pureeing a can of organic whole tomatoes, (with some added salt and pepper) and using raw, in order to get that delicious Neapolitan-like taste.

The best folding chairs you can buy

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

best folding chairs

The Insider Pick:

  • When it comes to seating, too often you have to choose between comfort and convenience during transport or storage. With a great folding chair, you can enjoy a supportive, inviting chair anywhere and then tuck the seat away when it's time to get up.

  • The Coleman Cooler Quad Chair is our top pick because it's sturdy, comfortable, and costs about twenty bucks.

To share a quote from Winston Churchill: "Never stand when you can sit, never sit when you can lie down." Lying down is great and all, but when you're at the dinner table, around the campfire, relaxing in the backyard, or tailgating before the game, sitting is the preferable position. If you want to take a seat, of course, you'll need a chair. But what's to be done when you need extra seats for guests, or if space is at a premium in your smaller apartment, or when you want to bring a chair along camping, picnicking, or to the ballgame or race? Ah, you guessed it — The answer is the folding chair.

With a great folding chair, you and your friends or guests can enjoy the relaxing comfort of the seated position without cluttering up your home with big, bulky chairs. When not being used, a folding chair stows away in the closet, garage, or even under a bed. Many folding chairs are compact and lightweight enough to be carried to campsites, beaches, or other outdoor locations.

Other folding chairs look and feel so good that you can use them as a part of your everyday furniture — both indoors or out on the porch or patio.

In our guide, we have covered everything from semi-permanent outdoor and indoor seating to low-cost options for the extra chairs you only need a few times a year to highly portable options perfect for the outdoor enthusiast.

Here are the best folding chairs you can buy:

The best folding chair overall

Why you'll love it: The Coleman Cooler Quad Chair packs a lot of features into one low-cost folding seat, including a cup holder, a side pocket, and even a soft-sided mini cooler.

If you went to college any time in the past couple of decades, chances are good that at some point you sat in a Coleman folding chair. The same is true if you have gone car camping, tailgating at a concert or sporting event, or spent any time anywhere that people have deployed affordable, collapsible seating.

The Coleman Cooler Quad Chair folds down small enough to tuck into any closet, to fit under a bunk bed, or to stow away in the trunk of a car. Yet it can comfortably handle the weight of even a larger adult.

While cost is certainly one of the selling points of this classic folding seat, the Coleman Cooler Quad Chair is also notable for convenience. The chair features a built-in cup holder and a mesh side pocket into which you can tuck a book, a snack, or a flashlight. It also has a soft-sided four can cooler hanging off one armrest, so you can keep chilled beverages or foodstuffs close at hand. And finally, folding then chair up or popping it out for use takes all of four seconds, give or take.

With more than 4,500 reviews posted on Amazon, the Coleman Quad Cooler Chair enjoys a solid 4.5-star rating. One satisfied owner remarked on "what a deal" these "very comfortable" and "easy to carry" chairs are, while another said they more than lived up to the "good reputation" of the "Coleman brand."

And in their review, the product testers from Outdoor Gear Lab called this folding chair "affordable and versatile" and noted that it "packs up easy."

Pros: Great low price, multiple accessory features, large seat accommodates larger users

Cons: Lacking in back support

Buy the Coleman Cooler Quad Chair on Amazon for $20 to $35

The best outdoor folding chair

Why you'll love it: The Trex Folding Adirondack Chair is so well made that it will last for decades even if left outside in all seasons and weather.

Trex composite decking was developed as a wood alternative that stands in for natural building materials yet is significantly more durable and weather resistant. When my parents added a deck to our house back in the latter half of the 1990s, I remember thinking the stuff was pretty cutting edge. Now more than two decades later and after heavy snows, driving rains, searing summers, and lots of foot traffic, that deck remains in great shape. So just imagine how well a chair made out of Trex would stand up to age and the elements.

Now stop imagining it, because your dream already came true. The Trex Cape Cod Classic Folding Adirondack Chair is made of super strong, high-density and largely recycled wood-thermoplastic composite material. The seats look like traditional wooden Adirondack chairs, yet they will not lose their looks or degrade in quality even after years of outdoor use.

When you're not using your highly durable Trex Adirondack chairs, they can be folded up and tucked aside or stowed in the garage or shed, or just tossed under the porch — no need to worry of it rains or snows or hails or heats up, these chairs will be just fine.

With dozens of reviews logged, Home Depot customers have given the Trex Outdoor Furniture Folding Adirondack Chair a combined average rating of 4.6 stars. A gentleman named Alex spoke for many when he said he "was so happy with [his chair] that [he] bought the outdoor table and five chairs and two rocking chairs" to match.

Pros: Built to last for years, available in several colors, comfortable and supportive

Cons: Quite expensive

Buy the Trex Outdoor Furniture Cape Cod Classic Folding Adirondack Chair at the Home Depot for $279

The best folding dining room chair

Why you'll love it: Until you fold one up, the Linon Keira Pad Folding Chair looks like a permanent part of your dining room or kitchen table set.

A Linon Keira Pad Folding Chair is perfect for two kinds of household. The first is the smaller residence where space is at a premium. The second is the home that occasionally entertains large groups of people and wants to do so in style.

When folded down for use, these seats look and function just like a standard dining chair. They have wooden legs and frames, faux leather seat pads and backrests, and they will match the style of both traditional and contemporary homes.

Yet unlike most standard dining chairs, these handsome seats fold up into a slender enough package to be stowed in the broom closet, on a garage shelf, or even behind a door. sandra bullock oceans 8

Warning: Minor spoilers ahead for "Ocean's 8."

Calling "Ocean's 8" a star-studded film would be an understatement — and that's only partially due to the cast that includes A-listers like Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, and Rihanna, to name a few.

The movie follows Debbie Ocean (Bullock) as she tries to pull off a heist at the Met Gala. And what's a Met Gala without the biggest names in Hollywood? In order to make the movie as realistic as possible, director Gary Ross employed musicians, actors, and athletes to play, well, themselves.

Although there are probably around 50 cameos, here are the most notable celebrities who appeared in "Ocean's 8."

1. Common

The rapper is one of the first celebrities spotted in the Met Gala scene.

2. Jaime King

The actress is seen walking up the steps of the Met.

3. Heidi Klum

Klum exchanges some German with Debbie Ocean in the movie and compliments her gown. Ocean tells her it's a recycled look, but to keep that secret.

Mesmerizing aerial images show the growth of cities like Beijing and Las Vegas over the last 3 decades

Over the last three decades, much of the world's population growth has centered in urban areas, where 4.1 billion people — around 55% of the world's population — live today.

By 2030, the United Nations predicts that cities will house 60% of people globally, and one in every three people will live in cities with at least half a million inhabitants.

NASA satellites have visualized this growth through its Landsat programthe longest-running initiative for collecting satellite imagery of Earth. Landsat satellites have captured images of cities across the world since 1972.

The imaging startup Descartes Labs recently compiled these photos to create fascinating timelapses — from the 1980s to today — of five large cities, including Beijing and Las Vegas.

Take a look below:

In the span of just 34 years, the population of Dubai, UAE has grown from 350,000 to 3 million. The time-lapse below shows the city's rapid development over that period:

"The architectural scope of that expansion is impressive, particularly the infrastructure and buildings over the water," Jason Schatz, an applied scientist at Descartes Labs, told Business Insider.

São Paulo, Brazil expanded from around 13 million to 21 million people from the late 1980s to today. As you can see in the time-lapse below, much of this urban growth has resulted in sprawl:

The Las Vegas metro area bloomed from around 540,000 people in 1984 to 2.1 million people today. On the right, you can see that Lake Mead has shrunk, due partly to the region's increasing water demands:

The co-founder of booming vegan chain By Chloe just opened a new Middle Eastern restaurant. Here's what it's like to eat there.

DEZ 2891

  • Samantha Wasser, co-founder of the international vegan fast-casual chain By Chloe, just opened a new Middle Eastern restaurant called Dez, which is short for desert.
  • The chef at Dez is Eden Grinshpan, star of the Cooking Channel show "Eden Eats."
  • The food served at Dez has some very personal touches. "[The food] is exactly the way [Eden] would prepare it for you if you came to her home," founder Sam Wasser said.

By Chloe, a vegan fast-casual chain, has become an international success since opening in 2015. The chain now has 10 stores, including a new location in London, where another is on the way.

By Chloe co-founder Samantha Wasser recently opened her latest fast-casual spot, which is in collaboration with chef Eden Grinshpan, who hosts the Cooking Channel's "Eden Eats." Called Dez, short for desert, the restaurant serves up a mix of Middle Eastern food, including dishes like Moroccan lamb meatballs, harissa curry shakshuka, and falafel cauliflower pita.

Though Grinshpan had been sitting on the concept for a couple of years, the idea to open a restaurant came about after she hosted a pop-up in Brooklyn. She received so many positive responses that within weeks, she was meeting with Esquared Hospitality, which also operates By Chloe.

The menu at Dez took more than two years to come together. The prices are relatively low, with meze costing $6 and salads priced at $11.

Grinshpan, who is half-Israeli, said the Middle Eastern concept hits close to home.

"The food that I'm cooking at Dez, every dish has a story," she told Business Insider. "You get Persian influence, you get Moroccan influence, you get so many different cultures that you can see sprinkled in throughout the entire menu. Nothing is super traditional."

While this is Grinshpan's first restaurant, Wasser is clearly no stranger to the fast-casual industry. The hope is to appeal to millennials in much the same way that By Chloe does, and to eventually grow Dez's presence elsewhere.

"What I love about the fast-casual industry right now is that it's pretty much designed for me and my peers, and millennials as well, where people want delicious food that is well-sourced and well-curated in a high designed space. And that's kind of where fast food is lacking," she said.

We recently went to Dez to see what it was all about. Here's what it was like:

SEE ALSO: This chain wants to be the McDonald's of vegan fast food — here's what it's like to eat there

Dez is located in Soho, just around the corner from By Chloe.

It was pretty busy considering that it had only been open for two hours when I visited.

There were colorful decorations and plants throughout the interior, and a cardboard camel decorated with flowers sat in the front of the restaurant. While designing Dez, Wasser placed an emphasis on creating a well-designed space. "I think more people are going to be paying attention to the setting and the packaging. People want to have fun when they're eating," she told Business Insider.

The 25 highest-paid players in the NHL

$

Patrick Kane

The NHL is still in a bit of a transition when it comes to how much money their top players are making.

Prior to the new collective bargaining agreement (CBA), teams took advantage of a loophole that allowed players to be paid more than they normally would under the salary cap. That loophole led to some skewed salaries and has since been corrected.

Still, several of the NHL's highest-paid players are playing on deals made under the old rules.

This year's list of the NHL's highest-paid players includes 11 centers, eight wingers, five defensemen, and just one goaltender.

Here are the 25 players who will make at least $8.5 million this season, with data provided by Spotrac.

This post was originally published in October.

25. Patrick Marleau — $8,500,000

Team: Toronto Maple Leafs

Position: Left Wing

All-Star games: 3 in 19 seasons

Contract: 3 years, $18.75 million

One thing to know: After Marleau spent 18 seasons with the San Jose Sharks, the 38 year old gives Austin Matthews a veteran left winger. While the Leafs did not have to go overboard to get a veteran wing, they did have to commit to three seasons. The good news is the Leafs are only on the hook for $4.3 million in the final season, although his cap hit will still be a little higher at $6.3 million.

24. Patrice Bergeron — $8,750,000

Team: Boston Bruins

Position: Center

All-Star games: 2 in 13 seasons

Contract: 8 years, $55 million

One thing to knowBergeron's 8-year, $55 million contract extension, signed in 2013, means the center will likely play his entire career with the Bruins as he is signed through his age-36 season.

t15. Ryan O'Reilly — $9,000,000

Team: Buffalo Sabres

Position: Center

All-Star games: 1 in 8 seasons

Contract: 7 years, $52.5 million

One thing to knowJust 26 years old, O'Reilly is already entering his 9th NHL season and is already in the second year of his 7-year, $52.5 million extension he signed in 2015. He made $11 million in the first year of that deal, but that will fall to $6 million for each of the final four seasons.

7 ways to get calcium that don't involve dairy

$

ice creamThere are so many reasons why you might want to skip out on dairy in your diet. Whether Beyoncé convinced you that you should go vegan, or  you have a lactose sensitivity or intolerance, or you just want to limit how much milk, cheese and yogurt you’re eating. But, a common concern with cutting back on dairy is often not getting enough calcium.

Since childhood, we’ve all heard that we should drink our milk to get strong bones and teeth, but the benefits of calcium are so much more than that. In addition to preventing insulin resistance, calcium helps the body sustain healthy blood vessels and good blood pressure regulation. It also helps your blood to clot, muscles to contract, and heart to beat. So how can you get enough calcium without eating dairy?

Here are seven ways you can get calcium even without drinking milk:

Oatmeal is the way to go

Whether it’s instant or made on the stove top, you have to get oats in your diet. Not only is oatmeal a great source of fiber, but it’s an excellent source of calcium. One cup of oatmeal boasts 100-150 mg of calcium. You can also add raw oats or oatmeal to other foods, like yogurt or energy balls.

Leafy green vegetables are no longer a punishment

Spinach, kale, bok choy, and so many others are good boosts of calcium. Most of them even have around 100 mg of calcium per serving. In one cup of bok choy, there is 74 mg of calcium. Bok choy also has healthy doses of vitamins A and C, and fiber. Adding greens into your sandwich, salad or smoothie is also an option.

Try eating nuts.

Whether it’s snacking on raw nuts, drinking nut milk (almond, coconut, cashew), or eating nut butter, there’s tons of calcium to be had from nuts. Believe it or not, there is 72 mg of calcium in ¼ cup of dry roasted almonds. And Brazil nuts contain about 100 mg of calcium per serving. So going nuts isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Airstream Nestr

  • Airstream recently introduced a new trailer, its first-ever production fiberglass model.
  • The product came from a 2016 acquisition of an Oregon-based startup.
  • The Nest by Airstream can be towed by relatively modest vehicles.
  • It sells for $49,500, and it weighs 3,400 pounds.

Airstream is famous for its iconic aluminum trailers.

But now the company has launched its first-ever fiberglass production model: Nest by Airstream

Nest, which can be towed by a compact SUV, makes an attractive investment for both younger buyers looking to get into the outdoor life and for those who want to take to the road without the need of hotels and motels along the way.

Here's a closer look.

FOLLOW US: On Facebook for more car and transportation content!

If you know anything about Airstream trailers, it's probably the silver-bullet aluminum models you've seen.

The 85-year-old company manufactures, in the USA, the all-American trailer at its best, crafted from shimmering aluminum and exuding timeless cool.

But Airstream has been shaking up its designs of late. Its modest Basecamp rolled out in 2016.

The Basecamp was a shiny Airstream that evoked the brand's image. The recently launched Nest by Airstream is a different story.

In 2016, under CEO Bob Wheeler (who joined in 2005), Airstream acquired NEST Caravan, an Oregon startup that had produced a prototype trailer that caught Airstream's eye.

These biggest pros and cons of the keto diet, according to a nutritionist

$

cooking mistake new girl

There's nothing black and white about the keto diet. Yes, it will likely make you lose weight quickly. And yes, Halle Berry is an avid follower which automatically ups its coolness factor by about 100. But it also has the potential to introduce many fatty foods into your diet, which has some pretty unhealthy consequences.

Keto is all about high-fat, low-carb consumption, which means you'll be eating lots of fish, meat, eggs, and dairy. Foods like potatoes, pasta, and fruits are pretty much out of the question. The logic is that your body won't be able to draw from carbohydrates, so it will enter into a state of ketosis. That means you'll start burning fat for energy, resulting in quick weight loss.

But how healthy is this whole process? INSIDER spoke to nutritionist Andy Bellatti about the pros and the cons of the keto diet.

You'll actually see weight loss results — but it may not last.

You will likely notice a change in your body when you start the diet.

"Initially, as the keto diet depletes glycogen stores – due to its very low carbohydrate content – people will shed a good amount of water weight," Bellatti explained to INSIDER.

However, losing water weight doesn't actually mean you're losing excess fat. And, according to Livestrong, if you decide to go back to your old eating patterns it's possible you'll end up gaining back even more weight.

The diet might have other hidden health benefits.

Excessive amounts of carbs can lead to high blood sugar. If you cut out all those carbs, there's definitely a chance that you'll see a drop in your blood glucose count.

"I have seen literature showing a very beneficial effect of the keto diet on blood sugar," Bellatti said. "But we have to examine the effects on the entire body … we can't recommend a diet simply because it results in weight loss and improved blood sugar."

You're missing out on healthy foods.

Carbs aren't just delicious treats. They can also be really crucial for your health.

"[The keto diet] shuns many healthy, whole plant foods – beans, legumes, certain fruits and vegetables, whole grains and pseudograins," Bellatti said. "All these foods contribute fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytonutrients that offer many health benefits."

If you want to try out the keto diet, Bellati recommended focusing on plant-based fats like nuts, seeds, avocados, coconut, and olive oil.

5 signs your boss doesn't like you as much as you think

boss

  • Your boss’s impression of you is important, since he or she controls the projects you work on and whether you get promoted or fired.
  • Signs that your boss doesn’t like you can be subtle, since you’re working together in a professional capacity.
  • According to experts, you should should be wary if your boss doesn’t want to get to know you, talks over you in meetings, or is not concerned about your advancement at the company.

Your boss’s impression of you is important, since he or she largely controls the projects you work on and whether you are promoted or fired. If you have a strong relationship, your boss can become your biggest advocate. If you don’t, your job could be on the line.

Some bosses will be direct about their feedback and where your relationship stands, but not everyone is comfortable with confrontation. Your boss might not say what he or she really thinks, so you have to learn to read the subtle and not-so-subtle signs.

Business Insider spoke to Dr. Amy Cooper Hakim, founder of the Florida-based management consulting firm The Cooper Strategic Group and author of “Working With Difficult People,” to find out the signs that your boss is just not that into you and what to do about it.

SEE ALSO: 9 real people explain how they realized they needed to quit their job

1. He doesn’t want to get to know you

Let’s say you only hear from your boss when she needs something from you or there is a scheduled meeting on the calendar. You’ve tried to strike up a casual conversation or even just say “hello” in the morning, but she seems completely disinterested.

This could be a sign that your boss doesn’t like you personally and only thinks of you as someone who can get the job done, according to Cooper Hakim. “Your boss may appreciate your work product and performance, but he doesn’t care to get to know you or to interact beyond that point,” she said.

Sure, your boss doesn’t have to be your BFF, but if you notice that he or she is friendly with other people they manage, it could be a reflection of what they think of you.

2. She talks over you in meetings

Whenever you start to explain your ideas in meetings, your boss interrupts you and steals the metaphorical mic. Now you know all too well how Taylor Swift must have felt at the MTV Awards when Kanye West swooped in mid-speech.

“It shows that your boss doesn’t respect you or your ideas, or she is more interested in promoting her own agenda than in listening to anyone else’s opinions, including yours,” Cooper Hakim said.

3. He passes you over for projects

You’ve expressed interest in projects that you think you’re qualified for, but you are never chosen for the role. Instead, your boss takes the lead or gives it to someone else he manages.

Your boss either doesn’t listen when you share your goals, or he hears them but blows you off. This is a sign that your boss doesn’t care about helping you accomplish your goals, Cooper Hakim told Business Insider. It could also be a sign that he doesn’t trust you or think you’re qualified to lead the project.

I once found a formerly top secret D-21 supersonic drone in the Arizona desert

D-21 supersonic drone

Most of what is lying around in the dusty expanse of the aircraft graveyards around Tucson, Arizona is readily identifiable and not entirely remarkable.

Ejection seats from old F-4 Phantoms. An old CH-53 helicopter hulk. An interesting find over there is a fuselage section of a Soviet-era MiG-23 Flogger. No idea how it got here. Other than that, it’s just long rows of old, broken, silent airplanes inside high fences surrounded by cactus, dust, sand and more sand.

An errant aileron on a dead wing clunks quietly against the hot afternoon breeze as if willing itself back into the air. But like everything here, its days of flying are over.

SEE ALSO: We took a rare tour of one of the US Navy's most dangerous warships that entered combat for the first time in Syria

But there… What is that strange, manta-ray shaped, dusty black thing lying at an angle just on the other side of that fence? It may be an old airfield wind vane or radar test model. But it also may be…

I had only read about it and seen grainy photos of it. I know it’s impossible. The project was so secret not much information exists about the details even today. But I stand there gawking through the chain link fence as the ruins of the other planes bear silent witness. It’ like the corpses of the other airplanes are urging me to look closer. To not leave. Their silent dignity begs me to tell this story.

After nearly a minute of studying it through the fence I realize; I am right. It is right before my eyes. Ten feet away. Despite the 100-degree heat I get goosebumps. And I start running.

I quickly locate a spot where the entire fence line opens up. I skirt the fence and in a couple minutes I'm running around inside the sandy airplane corpses.

There, sitting right in front of me on its decrepit transport cart and dusted with windblown sand, abandoned in the Sonoran Desert, is one of Kelly Johnson and Ben Rich’s most ambitious classified projects from the fabled Lockheed Skunk Works.

I just found the CIA’s ultra-secret Mach 3.3+ D-21 long-range reconnaissance drone. The D-21 was so weird, so ambitious, so unlikely it remains one of the most improbable concepts in the history of the often-bizarre world of ultra-secret “black” aviation projects. And now it lies discarded in the desert.

The following story behind it is so bizarre it is difficult to believe, but it is true.

Only an SR-71 Blackbird is fast enough and can fly high enough to photograph this, the most classified of national security tests. Traveling faster than a rifle bullet at 91,000 feet, near inner-space altitude, one of the most ambitious and bizarre contraptions in the history of mankind is about to be tested.

“Tagboard” is its codename. Because of the catastrophic May, 1960 shoot-down of Francis Gary Powers’ Lockheed U-2 high altitude spy plane over the Soviet Union, the CIA is in desperate need of another way to spy on the rising threat of communist nuclear tests.

Even worse, the other “Red Menace”, the Chinese, are testing massive hydrogen bombs in a remote location of the Gobi Desert near the Mongolian/Chinese border. It would be easier to observe the tests if the Chinese did them on the moon.

The goal is simple, but the problem is titanic. Get photos of the top-secret Red Chinese hydrogen bomb tests near the Mongolian border deep inside Asia, then get them back, without being detected.

Lockheed Skunkworks boss Kelly Johnson and an elite, ultra-classified small team of aerospace engineers have built an aircraft so far ahead of its time that even a vivid imagination has difficulty envisioning it.

Flat, triangular, black, featureless except for its odd plan form as viewed from above, like a demon’s cloak, it has a sharply pointed nose recessed into a forward-facing orifice. That’s it. No canopy, no cockpit, no weapons. Nothing attached to the outside. Even more so than a rifle bullet its shape is smooth and simple. This is the ultra-secret D-21 drone.

The D-21 is truly a “drone”, not a remotely piloted aircraft (RPA). Its flight plan is programmed into a guidance system. It is launched from a mothership launch aircraft at speed and altitude. It flies a predetermined spy mission from 17 miles above the ground and flashes over at three times the speed of sound. It photographs massive swaths of land with incredible detail and resolution. And because of its remarkably stealthy shape, no one will ever know it was there.

The 21 best heist movies of all time, ranked

oceans 8

There's something about a good heist movie that makes going to the multiplex worthwhile.

With the high stakes, and the top-shelf actors and directors who seem to gravitate to the genre, when it's done right, it can be a thrilling cinematic experience.

With "Ocean's 8" hitting theaters Friday — where the likes of Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson, and Rihanna make up a group of thieves who pull a heist at the Met Gala — we thought it was a good time to look back on the classics of the genre.

Here are the 21 best heist movies of all time, ranked:

SEE ALSO: Steven Soderbergh has a new plan to make Hollywood movies outside the control of big studios

21. "A Fish Called Wanda"

John Cleese, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Kline, and Michael Palin play a bumbling group who commit a robbery of very pricey diamonds and then try to con one another out of the loot. Cleese and Palin are at top form, and Kline's portrayal of a cocky American earned him an Oscar win for best supporting actor.

20. “Mission: Impossible”

Though Tom Cruise's first time playing Ethan Hunt showed off all of the fun spy aspects of the franchise, it also had a very elaborate heist element. Hunt breaking into CIA headquarters to steal the "NOC" list is a highlight of the film.

19. “Bottle Rocket”

For Wes Anderson's directorial debut, he cast then-unknown brothers Luke and Owen Wilson as friends who plan the heist of a factory only for things to go horribly wrong.
