Ohio Governor John Kasich

Hail to the chief of state.

Zippia analyzed the salary of every governor based on information received from Ballotpedia. With this data, we can compare the 50 governors of the United States to see how much each makes.

Most governors are paid at least $100,000, but leaders of six states receive a five-figure salary. The wages from $70,000 to $187,818.

While the pay pales in comparison to that of some CEOs and execs, staying at the Governor's Mansion can be a great stepping stone in a political career. Of the 44 men who have been president of the United States, 17 previously served as governor. The most recent to do so was George W. Bush, who was working out of the capitol building in Austin, Texas when he was elected president.

Of the current slate of governors, 33 are Republicans, 16 are Democrats, and one is an Independent. There will be gubernatorial elections in 36 states during 2018.

Read on for each governor's salary, listed in alphabetical order by state:

The best bed frames you can buy

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

best bed frame

The Insider Pick:

Your bed frame can make or break the look and overall feel of your bedroom. Certain bed frames make the room feel more cozy, while others add a bold and modern style that often compliments your style. Your mattress certainly matters in terms of comfort, but from a design aspect, your bed frame is the foundation of your bedroom.

Beyond design, bed frames serve additional purposes. Most elevate, or at least dictate, your sleeping position, ideally making it easier to get in and out of bed. Sometimes they make room for additional storage below your sleeping area or in the headboard. Bed frames also extend the life of your mattress by providing support and preventing weak, sagging spots.

The mattress-on-floor look instantly diminishes any style in your sleeping space and it's not ideal for you or your mattress. Mattresses need support to stay firm and stable, and, just like humans, mattress, no matter what their make or model, need space to breathe.

Buying a bed frame may seem simple — just match frame size with mattress size — but there are more buying options than you might realize, which can make the shopping process seem overwhelming. That's why we've compiled this guide to the best bed frames.

Here are our top picks for the best bed frame:

Updated on 06/22/2018 by Lulu Chang: Added two new bed frames from Reverie and Casper.

Read on in the slides below to check out our top picks.

The best bed frame overall

Why you'll love it: The Zinus Upholstered Square Stitched Platform Bed Frame is completely squeakless and it has a classic, timeless look.

The Zinus Upholstered Square Stitched Platform Bed Frame is naturally simple with a classic design that we can’t see going out of style anytime soon. The soft square stitched dark gray upholstery adds a soft-to-the-touch design aesthetic to the already handsome piece. It's an all around high quality, timelessly designed bed frame.

As a cost saver, the headboard, frame, and ten wood slats that support the mattress are included in the price. You also have the option to purchase a matching footboard for less than $20 extra. The footboard is more of a personal preference that may help your bed look more neat and tidy by allowing you to tuck in all your bedding. All purchased parts, including the frame, legs, and wooden slats conveniently fit into the headframe and are shipped that way as well. Check it out in this reviewer’s handy unboxing video review.

It’s available in twin, full, queen, and king sizes, and as an added perk, the king size frame stands 14 inches off the ground, providing extra storage space. In other sizes, the frame is 8 inches off the ground.

The Zinus Upholstered Square Stitched Platform Bed Frame is featured on MattressPicks in the article 5 Best Zinus Bed Frame Reviews 2017, where it boasts a 5 out of 5-star rating. It's also listed in the Dekortips roundup of Find the best bed frame in 2017, where it’s ranked number one. On Amazon, the bed frame holds a 4.6-star rating based on more than 2,000 reviews.

Reviewers often comment that the bed frame is well worth the money. This reviewer writes, “You can't find a bed like this for under $200 dollars at your local furniture store.” Other reviewers like that it’s sturdy, easy to setup, and noticeably quiet. Another reviewer who remarks, “I actually had a 5.0 earthquake after the first week and rode it out on the bed.”

Overall, the Zinus is a bed frame that can blend quietly into the background of a loud bedroom or hold its own as the centerpiece of an otherwise neutral room. The sturdiness and easy setup are two major plusses for this category of products in particular, and the strong mattress support and soft upholstery complement each other, creating an overall high-quality bed frame we can’t help but recommend.

If you run into any problems, here is Zinus' contact info: email customerservice@zinusinc.com or call (800) 613-1225

Pros: Very sturdy, helps your mattress last longer, easy assembly, reasonable price, footboard option, adaptable style

Cons: Middle of the bed support may not be the best, shipping issues result in damaged parts a bit too often

Buy the Zinus Upholstered Square Stitched Platform Bed on Amazon for $159.99 (Twin), $218.50 (Full), $227.47 (Queen), $284 (King) — price varies, but shouldn't exceed $336.77

The best bed frame for under bed storage

Why you'll love it: Space is valuable, especially in small apartments, and this Zinus 14-inch SmartBase Platform Bed Frame lets you make the most of it.

If you don’t have bedroom space to waste, then a bed frame that provides plenty of under bed storage is the way to go. This Zinus 14-inch SmartBase Platform Bed Frame does just that, as it is raised 14 inches off the ground with 13 inches of clearance, so you can easily store medium to large plastic bins filled with the items you don’t need access to daily right under the bed.

It’s available in all regular mattress sizes and can be purchased in your choice of a standard bed frame, a bed frame with a skirt, or in a deluxe edition, which has an upgraded design for reinforced stability with t-shape leg construction and a locking system.

The most popular choice is the standard bed frame, which features a strong, durable steel frame and a unique folding design that makes it easy to move around as needed. Unlike some other models, it’s easy to assemble as this reviewer explains, “It comes in 2 separate pieces that are very light once you get them out of the box.”

The steel bed frame eliminates the need for a boxspring and can support spring, memory foam, latex, and hybrid mattresses. We like that it’s a rather standard 14-inch height, but if you want even more under bed storage, Zinus also has this very similar but not as popular 18-inch bed frame model.

There are no fancy bells or whistles to this bed frame, so you can achieve a super minimalist style, or add a headboard of your choice to jazz it up a bit. It’s even pretty basic compared to other bed frames designed to provide under bed storage, and we think that’s actually a good thing.

While other so-called storage bed frames often have drawers that can be pulled out from the sides or have a compartment under the bed you need to lift the bottom section of the frame along with your heavy mattress up to access, this Zinus 14-inch SmartBase Platform Bed Frame simply provides free space, so you are not as limited by the size of drawers under bed compartments.

The standard edition in a queen size is the Amazon number one best seller in the Bed Frames category. It’s also ranked number five on this Jon’s Guide article, Top 10 Best King Size Metal Bed Frame Reviews, and number two on this Dekor Tips article, Find the best bed frame in 2017. It has an average 4.6-star rating based on more than 17,000 reviews on Amazon, and it boasts more than 12,000 5-star reviews.

Reviewers mainly applaud the bed frame for the great value it provides for the price, that it’s easy to assemble and disassemble as needed, and how quiet the frame is. This reviewer explained that she could set it up in 10 minutes and that it "never creaks or emits annoying sounds."

Some reviewers do mention that certain mattresses, especially memory foam models, slide off of it easily. One reviewer said she wishes “it came with something to stop the bed from moving off of it.” Many reviewers such as this one, don’t complain but do recommend buying a bed skirt to hide the under bed storage.

If you run into any problems, here is Zinus' contact info: email customerservice@zinusinc.com or call (800) 613-1225

Pros: Tons of under bed storage, easy to assemble and disassemble, frame keeps things quiet, super affordable price point

Cons: Some mattresses may slip, no clear indication of how much weight it can hold

Buy the Zinus 14-inch SmartBase Platform Bed Frame on Amazon for $69.00 (Twin), $79.00 (Full), $92 (Queen), $133.26 (King)

The best bed frame with a leather look

Why you'll love it: No matter what mattress you choose, with this DHP Dakota Faux Leather Tufted Upholstered Platform Bed it will feel like you’re laying in luxury.

If your heart is set on a bed frame that has that standout, elegant leather look, but simply can’t justify spending thousands on a bed frame alone, this DHP Dakota Faux Leather Tufted Upholstered Platform Bed could be the solution. We love that there are so many purchase options available. You can buy it in twin, full, and queen sizes and in black, brown, or white faux leather.

The "contemporary chic" bed frame comes with a padded faux leather upholstered headboard and side rails, giving it a leather-heavy, or rich, look. Sturdy metal side rails add stability and durability, while the platform bed frame is supported with 24 wooden bed slats to provide more than adequate comfort without the need for a box spring.

The faux leather is easy to clean, and the manufacturer says the bed works well with memory foam mattresses and coil mattresses but doesn’t explicitly state other mattresses won’t do.

The bed frame just looks classy and, and it's reasonably priced. The faux leather is detailed with button tufts and padding that gives it a stylish, yet understated design so it can scale up even the plainest of bedrooms.

The DHP Dakota Faux Leather Tufted Upholstered Platform Bed has a 4-star rating on Amazon based on 476 customer reviews. The reviews go back a few years, but there were more than from the last week at the time of writing, which indicates the product is rather popular.

Reviewers go back and forth about the assembly process, with some saying it’s on the easy side — one reviewer says it took about one to two hours — and others claiming it’s more difficult, such as this buyer whose review is entitled "not fun to assemble.” Some reviewers say the bed frame isn't sturdy enough such as this reviewer, who recalled a rather traumatic experience with the bed frame. However, most reviewers are impressed with the look, low price, and support this frame offers.

Pros: Price, design, comes with headboard, easy to clean

Cons: May not be as sturdy as one would like, assembly can be a hassle

Buy the DHP Dakota Faux Leather Tufted Upholstered Platform Bed on Amazon for $187.65 (Twin) $198.35 (Full), $231.27 (Queen), No King — price varies but shouldn't exceed  $310.00

9 of our favorite optical illusions that involve cats and dogs

Dog With two Heads Illusion

Optical illusions are everywhere.

They can be found in artin the real world, and, of course, all over the internet.

We decided to round up illusions that involve two of our favorite things: cats and dogs.

Keep scrolling to see which ones you can figure out and which ones stump you.

A few years ago, this photo of a cat in a stairwell sparked some serious debate over whether the animal was walking down or up.

The post on 9Gag quickly racked up 4,000 comments. People who thought the cat was going up the stairs argued that the stairs could be made of mosaic tile with a wooden lip on the edge.

Turns out the cat is going down the stairs.

As Business Insider explained, the pebbled texture you see on the stairs isn't mosaic tile, it's what's known as the stair's rise, and the part that some people thought looked like a wooden lip is actually the stair nose. The nose overhangs the riser, which has a pebbled texture. A similar set of stairs can be seen in the inset of the photo above.

The face of the dog in the back of this photo threw a lot of people off.

When Reddit user chadwalk posted this photo in the subreddit r/funny back in November, people couldn't figure out what was going on with this dog's face— was he facing straight ahead or sideways? Some thought there was something wrong with the dog.

The 10 most intense battles in US history

$

eisenhower dday

In the short history of our country, the United States rose to global military dominance — yeah, I said it. Come at me, China.

But the road to the top was paved with the blood of good men and women. Looking back, there are some pivotal battles we remember with solemn pride and a little bit of hoo-rah.

Let's check out 10 of the most intense battles in United States history.

SEE ALSO: These are the 15 countries with the most troops ready to fight tonight

10. The Battle of Chosin

The Battle of Chosin Reservoir was one of the defining battles of the Korean War and the stuff of legend in the Marine Corps.

In the Fall of 1950, U.N. Forces under the command of General MacArthur had almost captured the entirety of North Korea when they were attacked by thousands of Chinese Communist soldiers. The U.S. X Corps was forced to retreat and by mid-November the 1st Marine Division and elements of the 7th Infantry Division found themselves surrounded, outnumbered, and at risk of annihilation in the high North Korean Mountains at the Chosin Reservoir. Their only way out was a fighting retreat back to the coast.

Although as Chesty Puller put it, they weren't retreating, they were "fighting in the opposite direction."

Over the course of the next 17 days, the Marines and soldiers fought the Chinese — and bouts of frostbite — with fierce determination and epic endurance. They broke through the enemy's encirclement and even rebuilt a bridge the Chinese destroyed using prebuilt bridge sections dropped by the U.S. Air Force.

By the end of the battle, the U.S. Marines suffered 836 dead and roughly 10,000 wounded. The Army had 2,000 dead and 1,000 wounded. The Chinese had the most catastrophic losses. Six out of their ten divisions were wiped out and only one would ever see combat again. Although exact numbers are not known, historians estimate that anywhere between 30,000 and 80,000 Chinese were killed.

Although technically a loss for the Marines, the Battle of Chosin Reservoir lives on in memory as an example of the Marine fighting spirit and the ability to find strength even when the odds are stacked against them.

9. The Battle of Antietam

A year and a half into the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln needed a Union victory. He finalized the Emancipation Proclamation during the summer but his cabinet feared it would be too difficult to enforce after a string of northern losses, including the Second Battle of Bull Run (known as the Battle of Manassas to the rebels).

Lincoln charged Major General George B. McClellan with the defense of Washington D.C. against Confederate General Robert E. Lee's first invasion of the North. Earlier in the month, Lee divided his men, sending General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson to capture Harper's Ferry. Following Jackson's success, Lee decided to make a stand in Maryland at Antietam Creek.

After two days of posturing, fighting began early in the morning on Sep. 17, 1862, and lasted well past sundown, with staggering casualties on both sides and no ground gained. The next day, both armies gathered their dead and wounded and Lee retreated south.

It was the bloodiest one day battle in American history, with 23,000 casualties from both sides and nearly 4,000 dead.

Sticking with the Civil War, let's move on:

8. The Battle of Gettysburg

The Battle of Gettysburg was not only the largest battle of the Civil War, it remains the largest battle ever fought in North America.

Confederate General Robert E. Lee had just won a decisive victory against Union General George Meade's Army of the Potomac in Virginia. Wanting to capitalize on the recent victory, Lee led his troops on a second invasion into the Northern states to defeat the Union on their own soil and hopefully gain recognition of the confederacy by European countries.

General George Meade's Army of the Potomac pursued Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and the two forces met near Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. The Confederates outnumbered the Yankees at roughly 30,000 to 18,000. By the end of the first day, the Yankees were forced to retreat through town to cemetery ridge and Culp's Hill.

By the next day, both sides had gained reinforcements. Meade now had roughly 94,000 soldiers in a fish hook formation, allowing him to successfully move troops from one front to another. Lee had roughly 72,000 soldiers wrapped around the fish hook.

The Confederates attacked first but at the end of the second day, the Union defense lines held strong.

On the 3rd day, Lee tried an aggressive attack to crush the federals. He sent General Pickett with approximately 12,500 men to crush the Union Army with a direct charge.

It turned out to be one of Lee's most ill-fated decisions. Fifty percent of Pickett's men were wounded or killed and the rest of his troops were forced to retreat.

On July 4th, Lee and his men waited for the Yankees to attack — but they didn't.

That night the Northern Army of Virginia began its retreat back to the South. His train of wounded men stretched 14 miles long. Lee's greatest opportunity became his greatest failure and his hopes of European recognition for the Confederacy — and a quick end to the war — were dashed.

Casualties were high on both sides. The Union suffered around 23,000 casualties while the South suffered 28,000 — more than a third of Lee's army.

The battle was the deadliest in the Civil War and prompted Lincoln's iconic Gettysburg address four and a half months later at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery.

Although the fighting continued for nearly two more years, Gettysburg was an irrevocable turning point in the war in the Union's favor.

I've tried 6 different luggage brands, and this one is by far the best

woman suitcase

  • Luggage that’s bulky, heavy, or difficult to manage can add to stress when traveling.
  • Your luggage should be large enough to fit your belongings, have compartments for organization, be durable, and feel light enough to lift easily.
  • I take dozens of trips each year, and have tried several different luggage brands over the years.
  • For me, the EBags Fortis 30" Hardside Spinner comes out on top in terms of price, durability, looks, and weight.

I take dozens of trips every year, so I need a reliable and durable piece of luggage.

Since many of my trips last close to two weeks, I like to take checked luggage with me so I can prepare for different climates, pack video and camera equipment, and bring back souvenirs on the return leg.

Here are the six luggage brands I have used over the years, and the one piece of luggage that checked all of my boxes: size, comfort, durability, safety, and value.

SEE ALSO: A seasoned traveler shares 6 things she never does at the airport

The EBags Fortis 30" Hardside Spinner wins in size, weight, cost, durability, and safety

Of all the luggage I’ve tried, the eBags Fortis Hardside Spinner is the best in terms of size, weight, cost, durability, and safety. For $150, the Fortis is a fantastic deal for what you get — both style and function. I easily whisked this piece up and down the stairs of the New York City subway, even fully packed.

At 30 inches, the Fortis is ideal for long trips because of its ability to expand as you fill it with your belongings. Even packed at max capacity, this carry on was easy to lift and moved swiftly thanks to its double wheel spinners.

This stylish bag (I have the sleek black with elegant perforated lines) is also extremely durable — the polycarbonate shell held up well to rough handling while moving through the airport. There’s also convenient built-in locking system so that you don’t have to bother with loose locks.

The Delsey AERO held up against bumpy terrain

The Delsey AERO (25”) is a nice fit for week-long trips. This durable carry-on held up well against bumpy terrain during my travels, and the spinning wheels helped me comfortably pull my belongings through LaGuardia Airport. (The airport is under construction, which created an extra-long walk.)

The interior comes with straps that kept my bulky winter clothes organized, though the bag was rather heavy to lift into the overhead bins. The specialized safety lock allows only TSA agents to inspect the interior of your bag. At $130, this piece of luggage is both affordable and stylish.

TravelPro Crew 11 25" Expandable Spinner Suiter is durable and well-organized

At $270, the TravelPro Crew 11 is more costly than some of the other options — especially since you can find less expensive brands with similar sizing and features.

This carry-on is durable and well-structured, with multiple zipper compartments in the front, middle, and main portion of the bag, which sometimes made it difficult to remember where I had packed certain belongings. The interior also includes a suiting compartment that, to my surprise, kept my clothes completely wrinkle-free. The zipper on the main compartment allows for a lock to keep your luggage safe.

Be cautious in lifting this bag, though, as it was slightly heavy to put into the overhead bin when full.

What 11 highly-successful people were doing at 16

  • Sometimes talent is apparent at a young age. Bill Gates, worth $92.8 billion today, founded his first company at age 16.
  • But sometimes it's not so clear. Steve Jobs's grade point average in high school was an abysmal 2.65— mostly Bs and Cs.
  • Read on to see how 11 of the most-accomplished people in the world spent their younger years.

Though we often like to think the signs of talent or intelligence are clear at a young age, that's not always the case.

Many of the world's most successful people didn't necessarily seem that way from the get-go. Kim Kardashian's classmates said she was quiet, while Steve Jobs earned mostly Bs and Cs in high school.

Sometimes the path to fame is obvious, though. Bill Gates was only 16 when he founded his first company

Read on to learn what the biggest names in the world were like when they were mere underclassmen.

Beyoncé

Beyoncéspent much of her childhood in the talent show circuit, being managed by her father and practicing in front of clients at her mother's hair salon. Her family went nearly bankrupt trying to launch Beyoncé's stardom.

"Every penny went into Beyoncé's career," Lyndall Locke, Beyoncé's childhood boyfriend, told The Daily Mail

But in 1997, when Beyoncé was 16, the Houston girl finally made moves. Destiny’s Child, which she formed with childhood friends, had a track featured in the 1997 film Men in Black

Now, Beyoncé doesn't consider Destiny's Child's first release to be anything remarkable. "The first record was successful but not hugely successful," Beyoncé told The Guardian in 2006

Jeff Bezos

Jeff Bezos, who is now worth $141.9 billion, was working the grill at McDonald's at age 16.

"My first week on the job, a five-gallon, wall-mounted ketchup dispenser got stuck open in the kitchen and dumped a prodigious quantity of ketchup into every hard-to-reach kitchen crevice. Since I was the new guy, they handed me the cleaning solution and said, 'Get going!'"Bezos told Cody Teets, author of "Golden Opportunity: Remarkable Careers That Began at McDonald's."

Bezos told CNBC Make It that it's possible to learn responsibility and other crucial lessons in any job — and he did so as a teen at the Golden Arches.

The lessons gained from working at a grill with others is a lot different than what's available in the classroom, he said.

"The most challenging thing was keeping everything going at the right pace during a rush. The manager at my McDonald's was excellent. He had a lot of teenagers working for him, and he kept us focused even while we had fun,"he told Teets.

Maya Angelou

The poet and civil rights activist Maya Angelou had a tumultuous youth. She was abandoned by her parents at a young age, and was sexually assaulted as a child.

By age 16, Angelou was living in San Francisco. She decided she wanted to become a streetcar conductor

"I saw women on the street cars with their little changer belts," Angelou said in a 2013 interview with television host Oprah Winfrey. "They had caps with bibs on them and form-fitting jackets. I loved their uniforms. I said that is the job I want."

There was initially resistance, as she was refused an application.

"I sat there (at the office) for two weeks, every day," Angelou said in the interview. "And then after two weeks, a man came out of his office and said 'come here.' And he asked me 'why do you want the job?' I said 'I like the uniforms.' And I said 'and I like people.' And so I got the job."

Sometimes I find myself abandoning my digital shopping cart before purchasing just because I don't want to pay the extra shipping fee. It's a hurdle I think plenty of people have trouble with — it can be hard to stomach an extra $10 for shipping when we're so used to the "free" two-day perk from Amazon's Prime membership

Despite the fact that you technically pay for that shipping from Amazon in the form of a $99 annual fee, having a Prime membership makes it difficult to justify the shipping cost from sites that were once our go-tos.

It turns out, however, that Prime's free two-day shipping perk isn't just limited to Amazon.com.

As Amazon continues to acquire more and more online retailers, it's also started spreading the benefits of its membership program to customers of those websites. This has mostly applied to the fashion brands they own, but recently expanded out to others as well. Though the list is pretty short right now, we have a feeling that the more companies Amazon buys, the more websites they'll end up adding Prime perks to.

Below, you'll find a quick list of sites that currently offer free two-day shipping with your Amazon Prime membership:

SEE ALSO: These 15 little-known perks show why Amazon Prime is so much more than free shipping

Shopbop

Check out everything Shopbop has to offer

Shopbop is an online destination for luxury and designer clothes, shoes, bags, and accessories. Though they carry plenty of relatively affordable staples like Levi's, Soludos, and Jeffrey Campbell, you'll also find high-end names like alice + olivia, Cinq a Sept, Ganni, and Oscar de la Renta on the site.

When you place your order, you can sign into your Amazon account to access free Prime shipping on nearly everything.

East Dane

Check out everything East Dane has to offer

East Dane is the brother of Shopbop, selling luxe menswear from both mid-range and high-end labels like Golden Goose, Ted Baker, Kenneth Cole, and Ferragamo.

Just like Shopbop, all you have to do is enter your Amazon account info at checkout to get Prime shipping.

Woot!

Check out everything Woot! has to offer

Woot! is an Amazon-owned startup that hosts daily flash deals on discounted products — from sports and outdoor gear to tech gadgets and electronics. The site feels somewhere in between Amazon's Deal of the Day section and Groupon, but a little cheekier.

To take advantage of your Prime shipping perk, just log in with your Amazon account before checking out.

One of the toughest World Cup groups is suddenly in chaos, and now Lionel Messi and Argentina have been thrown a lifeline to advance

Lionel Messi

With just two matches remaining before the knockout stage of the 2018 World Cup, Group D is in chaos.

After two disappointingperformances from group favorite Argentina, it looked as though Iceland's path to advancing was clear, but on Friday the tiny island nation fell to Nigeria, and now we won't know who will escape to the knockout stage until the final two matches are played on Tuesday.

Group leader Croatia has already sealed its spot in the final bracket of 16, but Argentina, Nigeria, and Iceland all still have paths to keep their World Cup dream alive.

Here is how each of the teams can advance to the knockout round:

Chances of advancing based on FiveThirtyEight's SPI ratings.

SEE ALSO: The best photo from every match of the 2018 World Cup

Argentina

Chance to advance: 48%

Scenarios to advance:

  • Argentina will advance with a win over Nigeria and an Iceland loss or draw with Croatia
  • If Iceland beats Croatia, Argentina can still advance if they beat Nigeria, and if they win the tiebreaker over Iceland (goal differential, goals scored, discipline). Iceland holds a one-goal advantage on goal differential.

One thing to know: Lionel Messi carries the hopes of a nation on his shoulders. Despite going scoreless through his first two matches at the World Cup, it takes only one brilliant performance against Nigeria, and a little help from Croatia, to save Argentina from a disastrous group stage exit.

Nigeria

Chance to advance: 45%

Scenarios to advance:

  • Nigeria will advance with a win over Argentina
  • If Nigeria draws with Argentina, they will advance if ...

    • Iceland loses, draws, or wins by just one goal over Croatia.
    • Iceland wins by two goals, and Nigeria has the advantage in the remaining tiebreakers (goals scored, discipline).

One thing to know: Nigeria has the simplest path to the knockout round — win and they're in, lose and they're out. They're also the only team that could catch Croatia to win the group, though it would take a sizable victory over the Argentines to pull it off.

Iceland

Chance to advance: 7%

Scenarios to advance:

  • Iceland advances with a win over Croatia, an Argentina win over Nigeria, and an Iceland advantage over Argentina in the tiebreaker (goal differential, goals scored, discipline). Iceland holds a one-goal advantage on goal differential.
  • Iceland advances if they beat Croatia by three or more goals, and Argentina draws with Nigeria.
  • Iceland advances if they beat Croatia by two goals, Argentina draws with Nigeria, and Iceland wins the remaining tiebreakers (goals scored, discipline). Nigeria holds a one-goal advantage in goals scored.

One thing to know: Iceland missed its best shot at advancing by losing to Nigeria, but still have a chance to move on to the knockout stage should they pull the soccer equivalent of an inside straight. The team need to win first and foremost, by as many goals as possible. After that, it's out of their hands. While they are ahead of Argentina in the standings now, Argentina has the advantage by playing their final game against the team (Nigeria) that Argentina and Iceland are chasing.

  • Costco deals are a great way to save money — but they're not always obvious.
  • Business Insider asked 49 Costco employees to share their top tips for saving money and making the most of your experience at the store.
  • From learning how to navigate the store to figuring out how to identify clearance items, here's some advice from Costco employees.

Costco's deals are a huge draw for many members.

The retail chain is known for hawking just about everything — and selling it in bulk.

Business Insider reached out to Costco employees to learn more about their top shopping tips, because it pays to shop armed with insider information. Thirty-five ended up sharing their best strategies.

One employee of four years suggested shopping for everything at the chain, which isn't that far-fetched of an idea, considering Costco sells cars, vacations, food kits for the apocalypse, yummy fast food, and even caskets.

"The deals are amazing," a Costco employee of four years told Business Insider. "Always think Costco first. From auto insurance, travel, mortgages, return policy, warranties — if you can get it through Costco, you absolutely should."

Here's what Costco workers had to say about how you can instantly improve your shopping experience.

Buy Kirkland

Kirkland products are the way to go, according to Costco employees.

Kirkland Signature — named for the chain's former headquarters in Kirkland, Washington — is Costco's private label.

"Buy Kirkland — it's cheaper and the same product as the name brand," a Costco employee who has worked for the store for five years told Business Insider.

An employee who's been with the store for 25 years agreed.

Don't hesitate

See something you like at Costco? Buy it. Don't hesitate.

That's what eight Costco employees told Business Insider. Seasonal items often disappear forever.

"Buy seasonal items when you can," one employee told Business Insider. "When they're gone, they're gone."

If you decide to sit on your hands, you might end up regretting it.

"Too many people come back looking for something we phased out," an employee of 10 years told Business Insider. "Buy it when you see it."

You can always return it later if you decide you don't want it.

Spring for the executive membership

A standard membership at Costco is $60 a year. An executive membership will cost you $120 a year and net you an annual 2% reward of up to $1,000 on your purchases.

Five Costco employees told Business Insider that they advised that customers spring for the executive membership.

"Come on," said one employee who has worked at the chain for six years. "You get 2% back on travel. Go to Hawaii. Make money."

An anti-Trump movement is calling for the boycott of these 24 retailers ($AMZN, $TJX, $M)

Donald Trump Ivanka

  • More than two years into Trump's presidency, the movement to boycott retailers that do business with the president's family is going strong.
  • Retailers such as Nordstrom and Gilt dropped Ivanka Trump's fashion line as the movement to boycott gained momentum last year.
  • However, 24 companies — including Macy's, Amazon, and TJ Maxx— still sell Trump-branded products.

The boycott-Trump movement has resurged.

Shannon Coulter, a brand and digital strategist, started the #GrabYourWallet hashtag in October 2016 to encourage people seeking a way to take concrete action against Donald Trump to boycott companies — large and small — that do business with his family. As a result, brands such as Nordstrom, Jet.com, and Gilt dropped Ivanka Trump's fashion line last year.

While Coulter has remained steadfast in her quest to encourage the other 62 retailers, nonprofits, and even a movie produced by Harvey Weinstein to ditch Trump products, the issue has peaked once more among consumers and activists.

In June, the shoe retailer DSW sent an email to a shopper that claimed it would end its partnership with Ivanka Trump shoes, Racked reported. The Ivanka Trump brand denied this.

While DSW has not yet confirmed that it has cut ties with Ivanka Trump and did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment, the store has just two pairs of discounted Ivanka Trump shoes on its website. This is down from 67 in January 2017, according to Racked.

As a result, Coulter has removed DSW from the boycott list.

Now, 24 retailers remain, spanning from huge names like Amazon and Macy's to smaller companies like Wegmans and Filene's Basement. Here's the list:

8 common job application lies that interviewers know aren't true

mindy project

The rise of the digital age has seen consumers evolve into investigators as they extensively research each product that they choose to purchase. Recruiters mirror this practice when interviewing candidates and it is not uncommon that they check an individual's social channels before they read a resume.

Many interviewees will admit that they tell a few white lies on their application or perhaps ‘exaggerate the truth'. However, it is wise to remember that not only can recruiters uncover the truth through their own methods of research, but their experience will ensure that common fabrications will soon become apparent.

In this article, we have worked with the experts at finance.co.uk who gave us the 8 most common lies that interviewers will spot on a candidate's application.

1. Time after time

Job seekers often like to present themselves as a person with a wealth of knowledge and experience. It is not uncommon for people to add 6 months or so to their time within a company however, this can soon be revealed as a lie as dates will soon dis-align with your age and/or timings that you left education.

2. Senior executive

Everyone likes a fancy job title or one that sounds senior. However, although an intern or junior may feel like they are working every role within the company, do not exaggerate your job title. It will soon become transparent within the interview process when the interviewer asks for details of your involvement within a senior role, your experience in leading teams and your interaction with stakeholders.

3. I am practically a millionaire.

Adding a nifty 10K to your salary may seem like a fool proof way to bag yourself a substantial pay rise however, this is arguably the easiest lie to uncover. Once you have landed the role and passed over your P45 your previous salary will literally be in black and white.

  • Romantic attraction is complicated.
  • But scientists have generated many insights into what might make men attractive to women.
  • For example, men who look older, sport a light beard, or do volunteer work are generally considered more appealing.

Romantic attraction is a complicated thing that scientists still don't completely understand.

But, through research and experimentation, they've come up with many ideas about what draws one person to another.

Below, Business Insider has rounded up some of the most compelling scientific insights about the traits and behaviors that make men more appealing to women.

The best part? None of the items on this list require you to get cosmetic surgery or do a major personality overhaul. We're talking small tweaks, like acting nicer and swapping your deodorant.

Read on for simple ways to step up your dating game.

This is an update of an article originally posted by Drake Baer.

Look for the universal signals of flirtation

Rutgers University anthropologist and best-selling author Helen E. Fisher says that women around the world signal interest with a remarkably similar sequence of expressions.

As she shared at Psychology Today, it goes like this:

"First the woman smiles at her admirer and lifts her eyebrows in a swift, jerky motion as she opens her eyes wide to gaze at him. Then she drops her eyelids, tilts her head down and to the side, and looks away. Frequently she also covers her face with her hands, giggling nervously as she retreats behind her palms.

"This sequential flirting gesture is so distinctive that [German ethologist Irenaus] Eibl-Eibesfeldt was convinced it is innate, a human female courtship ploy that evolved eons ago to signal sexual interest."

Look for someone 'in your league'

Men — and women — are attracted to people who are as attractive as they are.

In one study, researchers at the University of California at Berkeley looked at the behavior of 60 heterosexual male and 60 heterosexual female users on an online dating site. While the majority of users were inclined to reach out to highly attractive people, they were most likely to get a response if that person was about as attractive as they were (as judged by independent raters).

"If you go for someone roughly [equal] to you in attractiveness, it avoids two things,"Nottingham Trent University psychologist Mark Sergeant, who was not involved with the study, told The Independent. "If they are much better-looking than you, you are worried about them going off and having affairs. If they are much less attractive, you are worried that you could do better."

Present yourself as high status

2010 study from the University of Wales Institute found that men pictured with a Silver Bentley Continental GT were perceived as way more attractive than those pictures with a Red Ford Fiesta ST.

And a 2014 study from Cardiff Metropolitan University found that men pictured in a luxury apartment were rated more attractive than those in a control group.

Interestingly, men don't seem to be more attracted to women when they're pictured in a high-status context.

Rob Lowe Estate

  • Rob Lowe and his wife Sheryl are selling their 10,000 square-foot estate, listed for $47 million with Sotheby's International Realty.
  • It's in Montecito, California, the area hit with mudslides earlier this year that killed at least 17 people.
  • The home sits on 3.4 acres of land and has views of the Pacific Ocean and nearby Santa Ynez mountains.

"Parks and Recreation" actor Rob Lowe and his jewelry designer wife Sheryl are selling their 3.4-acre estate in Montecito, California, for $47 million, according to a new listing from Sotheby's International Realty.

The couple bought the land, near Santa Barbara, in 2005 and designed the home from the ground up, recruiting an architect, interior designer, landscape architect, and even a feng shui master. It was inspired by the Virginia countryside where the famous actor grew up and was featured on the cover of Architectural Digest in November 2010.

The couple is selling the home because their children are grown and have moved out, they said in statement.

Earlier this year, the Montecito area was hit with recurring mudslides that destroyed hundreds of homes and resulted in more than a dozen deaths, but Lowe's estate was unharmed, partly due to its elevation. The neighborhood is home to many celebrities including Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres, and Jeff Bridges.

bengal cat catnip

Photographer Andrew Marttila has a job that would make any animal lover swoon: he specializes in capturing the cuteness and quirks of our feline friends.

INSIDER spoke to Marttila about his latest project, "Cats on Catnip," which offers a humorous, uninhibited look at cats enjoying the green stuff.

Keep reading to see images from the book and learn more about his background in animal photography.

"I have always loved animals. From a very young age I was exposed to nature programs on television and became entranced by the wonder and diversity of the animal kingdom," Marttila said.

But there was one small issue. Marttila was allergic to most pets — cats included.

Thanks to allergies, he grew up with some unorthodox pets such as lizards, turtles, hedgehogs, and even a chicken.

Although he never outgrew his allergies, he's built up a tolerance to the cats he and his girlfriend have, including three permanent additions to the family and six fosters

To manage his symptoms, he takes allergy pills and carries around an inhaler.

Marttila says he became interested in animal photography the first time he took pictures of his cat with a digital camera.

"An incredibly unique quality of animals is that they are without pretension and are unapologetically themselves, always. The moment I was able to capture that essence through a lens was the moment I became hooked," he said.

"Mr. Robot"

Where to Stream: Amazon Prime Video, USA Network

Starring: Rami Malek, Christian Slater, Portia Doubleday, Carly Chaikin, Grace Gummer, Martin Wallström

Elliot Alderson lives a double life. He's an in-house cybersecurity engineer during the day, and at night, a vigilante who uses his exemplary hacking skills to apprehend felons. His life turns upside down when an underground group of hackers called "fsociety" seeks his help to abolish E Corp (or as Elliot calls it, Evil Corp), a greedy, multinational corporation.

Psychological plot twists aside, Mr. Robot depicts an eerie near-future dystopia that's a tad too realistic. It'll send chills up your spine.

"Humans"

The 8 most ridiculous moments in 'Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom' — ranked

jurassic world 2 blue owen.JPG

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom."

There's no denying the "Jurassic World" sequel is a ridiculous, silly popcorn movie. It's a fun movie and you'll have a good time watching it. But boy, are there some truly ridiculous moments in this movie.

Chris Pratt jumps through the jaws of a T. Rex and beats down a bunch of bad men single-handedly. And then there's the whole beginning of the movie.

The far-fetched moments are what make us love these movies. We're not supposed to take them seriously. But when you get down to it, there are some really silly things in this movie that we need to discuss. Come on this journey with us.

8. Chris Pratt's character becomes a ninja and takes out multiple people with his bare hands.

One of the sequel's bizarre moments is when Owen easily takes down about a dozen or so men at the Lockwood Estate. At some point, the man who ran off to live with nature and build himself a cabin in the woods became an expert at defensive combat.

And he's not just punching people in the face. He's dodging electrified wands, knocking others out, and flipping people over. Did I miss this in the first movie or are all raptor trainers just really good at fending off bad men in the name of saving reptiles?

7. Maisie is a master climber and scales the estate.

When Maisie is locked inside her room against her will, she takes it upon herself to scale the Lockwood estate to get to her grandfather. Somehow the child manages to not slip or fall while treating the house like her personal jungle gym.

Maisie looks like she's done this a million times before, and I can't imagine that's the case.

6. Owen gets within mere inches of lava, and is left unaffected.

One of the film's funniest moments comes when Owen is left for dead in the jungle.

He's been shot with a tranquilizer dart meant for dinosaurs and is left paralyzed on the island floor. He can't move an inch to save himself when a triceratops climbs over him to lick his face, but the moment lava comes, he suddenly regains some motion in his limbs. He then pulls himself limb by limb over a log and merely avoids getting touched by lava.

How was he able to fight off the effects of a tranquilizer dart that easily? Was he experiencing an adrenaline rush?

All the US states that ship more than $1 billion worth of goods to China that would be slammed by tariffs

  • President Donald Trump escalated his trade dispute with China and is planning for $200 billion worth of Chinese goods to be subjected to an additional 10% tariff.
  • In turn, China said it would slap the US with tariffs on $50 billion worth of US imports starting in July.
  • China's tariffs would target energy and agricultural products, such as ornamental fish, whiskey, and coal — which would affect some states more than others.
  • There are eight US states that exported more than $1 billion worth of tariff-eligible goods to China in 2017.

President Donald Trump escalated his trade dispute with China earlier this week, ordering the US Trade Representative to compile a list of $200 billion worth of Chinese goods to be subjected to an additional 10% tariff.

Trump's decision came three days after he announced tariffs on $50 billion worth of Chinese goods that would be subject to a 25% tariff.

In turn, China said it would slap the US with tariffs on $50 billion worth of US imports starting in July. China's tariffs would target energy and agricultural products, such as ornamental fish, whiskey, and coal — which would affect some states more than others.

Business Insider used US Commerce Department data to determine the number of tariff-eligible goods from each state shipped to China in 2017.

Because of the US database's limitations, the totals include some foreign-sourced goods that may not be subject to China's tariffs. Those goods represent a small portion of the overall values.

Additionally, the database measures exports using a system called Origin of Movement. This measures where exports are sent from rather than where they are produced. While research shows that Origin of Movement can be a solid proxy for production, the Census Bureau data may provide an undercount for some upstream producers.

For instance, some farmers in the Midwest ship their soybeans to Louisiana for transport, which increases the count for Louisiana. Given the fact that Louisiana still relies on the shipping and sales for its economy, the data is still helpful to evaluate the pain from the tariffs — but it may undercount the lost value to some upstream producers.

There are eight US states that exported more than $1 billion worth of tariff-eligible goods to China in 2017:

1. Texas: Tariff-eligible export amount: $8,022,380,040

In Texas, the biggest hit will come from crude oil and propane. The state sent $3.7 billion worth of crude oil to China last year, and $1.7 billion worth of propane.

2. Louisiana: Tariff-eligible export amount: $6,627,390,388

Some farmers in the Midwest ship their soybeans to Louisiana for transport, which increases the count for Louisiana.

Given the fact that Louisiana still relies on the shipping and sales for its economy, the data is still helpful to evaluate the pain from the tariffs — but it may undercount the lost value to some upstream producers.

3. Washington: Tariff-eligible export amount: $5,231,988,100
