We visited Goodwill's new store for bargain-hunting millennials, and it was like nothing else we've seen from the company

Goodwill store

  • Goodwill has opened a new boutique store on the Upper West Side of New York City.
  • The new location is targeted at millennials, and all the clothing and accessories sold there are hand-picked by stylists from donations made to stores across the metro area.
  • We recently visited the store to see what it's like to shop there.

Millennials are more bargain-hungry than ever, and Goodwill stores want to capitalize on it.

This week, the thrift-store chain launched a concept store in New York called "Curated by Goodwill NYNJ."

Located on Manhattan's Upper West Side, the new boutique store is designed to appeal to millennials with a curated assortment of fashion-conscious clothing, accessories, and homeware.

"We designed Curated as a distinct shopping experience to introduce shoppers concerned with the waste and pollution that fast fashion causes, to a stylish, affordable alternative," Katy Gaul-Stigge, the CEO of Goodwill NYNJ, said in a statement to the press this month.

Stylists hand-pick the clothing and accessories from donations made to stores around the New York metro area, a spokesperson told Business Insider.

The resale and thrift-store market has thrived in recent years. These stores align perfectly with millennials' shopping preferences for bargains and environmentally conscious practices.

But millennials aren't only shopping at thrift stores — they're also leading to a boom in donations.

"We are definitely getting overrun with furniture and about 20% more donations of everything than in previous years," Michael Frohm, the chief operating officer of a Goodwill thrift store in Greater Washington, told The New York Times in August 2017.

As many young people are waiting longer to buy their first home, they may not have the space to inherit their parents' furniture.

"We value a mobile lifestyle," Erin Hendrickson, a minimalist expert who runs the blog Minimalist RD, told Business Insider in February. "We aren't living in 2,500-square-foot homes, so don't have space."

We recently paid a visit to Goodwill's new millennial-focused store. Here's what it was like to shop there:

SEE ALSO: Goodwill stores are filling up with cheap pieces no one wants — and it reveals a huge problem with the way people shop for clothes

The new store is located on the Upper West Side. The nearest traditional Goodwill store is a 10-minute walk away.

It feels significantly smaller than some of the other Goodwill stores in New York, and it's instantly obvious that the assortment here has been curated with a specific shopper in mind: the fashionable millennial.

Still, there was a variety of customers shopping the store when we visited.

17 celebrities who appeared on 'Gilmore Girls'

gilmore girls

"Gilmore Girls" has a knack for launching careers. Fans of the show can boast appreciating Melissa McCarthy before she found widespread fame, Milo Ventimiglia before he became the world’s most beloved father on "This is Us," and Liza Weil before her role as loyal associate on "How to Get Away With Murder."

Still, the protagonists are far from the only celebrities on the show. Eagle-eyed fans bingeing the show can find a surprising number of famous cameos, from young Victoria Justice to "Park and Recreation's" Nick Offerman.

Many of these appearances happened before the actor/actress in question found fame, back when they were little more to us than Lorelai’s boyfriend, a Dragonfly Inn employee, or a college journalist. After all, the slew of eccentric Stars Hollow residents and Yale students in "Gilmore Girls" are every bit as quintessential to the show as autumn leaves, Luke’s diner, and coffee, coffee, coffee.

Chad Michael Murray played the popular kid.

While best known for his starring role on "One Tree Hill," Chad Michael Murray had a memorable stint as Chilton’s popular kid Tristan Dugray. He harbored an intense crush on Rory, which manifested in him calling her "Mary" and picking fights with Dean. Sadly for our eighth grade hearts, he and his smoldering eyes left for military school at the beginning of season two.

Adam Brody was (briefly) Lane’s boyfriend.

Who could forget Lane’s adorable secret boyfriend Dave Rygalski? He pretended he was a Christian guitarist to get Mrs. Kim’s approval, read the entire Bible front-to-back to take Lane to the prom, and eventually left for college in California (read: "The O.C.").

Victoria Justice was just a little girl.

Before she ever starred on "Victorious," Justice played a little girl at a "Lord of the Rings" themed birthday party in season four. Her character wasn’t even given a name, but she did get to wear elf ears and tell Sookie that her carrot "tastes like diapers." What a fabulous acting debut.

The best laundry detergent you can buy

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

best laundry detergent

The Insider Pick:

  • Good laundry detergent is effective at removing stains and odors from clothing with minimal effort on your part.

  • Tide's Free & Natural Liquid Laundry Detergent is the best choice for most people because it's unscented, effective at cleaning, and not as hazardous to children as pods.

Laundry day probably won’t ever be the highlight of your week, but the alternative — an empty underwear drawer and re-wearing your socks from yesterday — is far less appealing. And happily for us, today’s technology provides far easier methods for cleaning our clothes than our great-great-grandparents used. Instead of pounding our dirty unmentionables on a rock, or submerging them in a mixture of skin-burning lye, we have shelves full of laundry detergents to choose from.

A good laundry detergent removes dirt, oil, and sweat from your clothing, leaves behind a fresh scent, doesn’t fade or alter fabric color, doesn’t break you out in an itchy rash, and doesn’t empty your wallet. The problem is, store shelves are full of laundry detergents that meet all of these requirements, so how are you to choose the best product?

We've assembled this guide to the best laundry detergents that not only meet the basic requirements but also go the extra mile. So whatever type of laundry detergent you prefer — natural, unscented, sensitive formula — we have a pick for you.

Here are our top picks for the best laundry detergent:

Read on in the slides below to check out our top picks.

Best laundry detergent overall

Why you'll love it: Tide's Free & Natural Liquid Laundry Detergent is unscented, cleans effectively, and doesn't cost a crazy price.

Tide Free & Natural Liquid Laundry Detergent is hypoallergenic, with no dyes or perfumes that might irritate sensitive skin, but it still pulls no punches when it comes to getting dirt, stains, and odors out of your laundry.

Just use the measuring cup inside the cap to pour the right amount of liquid detergent into your washing machine, and let the cleaning begin. Your clothes will come out smelling fresh but without any strong fragrance. That's a good thing for people with allergies or skin sensitivity.

Amazon customer TMam sums up the comments of many pleased buyers in a review, writing, “I have some pretty severe allergies, and at times, contact dermatitis. I had to avoid Tide for decades because it was one of the primary allergens that triggered this reaction in my skin. Thankfully, they developed this formula that works well for me. I can't promise you won't have a reaction, but I use this on towels, sheets, and undergarments, and so far, I have been issue-free.”

Pros: Fragrance and dye free, easy-pour bottle, very effective in any temperature of water

Cons: Some complaints that the liquid runs down the side of the bottle after using the measuring cap

Buy a 2-pack of 50-ounce Tide Free & Natural Liquid Laundry Detergent (64 loads total) on Amazon for $12.48

Best laundry detergent pods

Why you'll love them: Tide Pods 3 in 1 Turbo leave your clothes super-clean and smelling fresh, plus they help remove stains without fading fabric.

Toss one of these pods into your washing machine, turn on the water, pile your dirty laundry on top, and let the spin cycle work its magic. Tide Pods 3 in 1 Turbo combine detergent, stain remover, and color protectant in one small pod. Pods make laundry day a snap. No need to measure, pour, or deal with a soapy, slippery bottle.

The formula is safe for HE washers, and won’t leave soap residue or require extra rinse cycles. There are several pleasant fragrances to choose from, but they are all fairly strong, so keep that in mind.

The 3,340 Amazon customers who wrote reviews on the Tide Pods 3 in 1 Turbo mostly praise its effective cleaning action, ease of use, and reasonable price. A few complained that they had pods fail to dissolve in the wash, however, and some other customers said the fragrance irritated their skin.

Another key thing to note is that any household with young children or elderly people with dementia shouldn't buy pods due to the poison hazard. We only recommend pods to households with grown adults who are not likely to pop a pod in their mouths. These things are toxic, and many people have died or become seriously ill from ingesting these pods.

Take care, use common sense, and keep pods away from those who might mistake them for food or a toy, and you'll be fine.

Pros: Powerful formula really gets clothes clean and stain free, childproof container

Cons: Fragrance is quite strong, so not suitable for those with sensitive skin, dangerous if ingested, not for homes with kids

Buy Tide Pods 3 in 1 Turbo (72 pods) on Amazon for $17.97

Best natural laundry liquid

Why you'll love it: Some natural laundry detergents don’t really get your clothes very clean, but Puracy's Natural Liquid Laundry Detergent gets your laundry clean and fresh.

No phosphates, sulfates, petrochemicals, animal by-products, chlorine, perfumes, gluten, tree nut-based ingredients, dyes, or allergens are in Puracy's Natural Liquid Laundry Detergent.

Instead, the company uses plant-derived enzymes to remove sweat, oil, dirt, and other grunge from your laundry, leaving behind fresh, clean fabric that won’t irritate sensitive skin — even the delicate skin of newborns.

You don’t need to use a lot of this highly concentrated formula — Just two pumps are enough for the average load, making this an economical as well as effective detergent. It’s safe for HE machines, and works equally well in cold or hot water and on all washable fabrics.

Amazon shopper Kat sums up the sentiments of many, saying, “I have all boys- stains come with the territory. For regular everyday stains, I don't even bother pretreating and they come right out with this detergent.”

Pros: No potentially irritating or environmentally unfriendly ingredients

Cons: Some customers complain that the pump leaks

Buy a 24-ounce bottle of Puracy Natural Liquid Laundry Detergent (96 loads) on Amazon for $15.55

  • Business Insider also spoke with a number of current and former employees about their favorite menu options.
  • Here are their recommendations for your next Panera Bread run.

Panera Bread's menu has a ton of options for everyone.

But, given that Panera Bread employees spend so much time preparing these meals, they're natural experts in what's worth buying at the casual dining chain.

Panera Bread employees also receive a discount of anywhere from 50% to 75% off meals up to $10, so many of them opt to eat at the restaurant while they're on break.

Business Insider recently spoke to a number of current and former Panera Bread employees about their favorite meals. We also scoured the web to find more recommendations from employees on Quora and Reddit.

Here's what the employees had to say:

One Panera Bread associate of one year told Business Insider that they prefer this meaty offering.

"It's super unique and has so many flavors," the employee told Business Insider, adding that they'd award the meal ten out of ten stars.

The squash soup

Associate Dorian Bach wrote in a 2016 Quora post that this particular option is the best soup in Panera Bread.

But, alas, fans of this autumnal-gourd-based dish will have to wait until fall to partake once more. It's a seasonal item at Panera Bread.

This free travel app is the only app you need to navigate a new city like a local — here's how it works

Mitty app

There's no arguing that smartphones have made navigating new cities a little easier, but all too often we travel to a new place only to find that the the apps we usually rely on are worthless there.

The current alternative? Download a brand-new set of apps that take up storage space and are left untouched for the rest of eternity.

Mitty. (yes, with a period) is a new travel app that sets out to fix both of those problems.

The creators of the iOS app, available in the App Store on Wednesday (and coming soon to Android), considered the services you would set out to find when you move to — or vacation in — a new city, and then picked the single best app for each service in every city.

The best part about the concept, in my opinion, is that it avoids making you download each app separately. Mitty cloud-streams the apps so that there's more space on your phone's screen, and one less thing you have to unpack when you're home.

Here's how to use Mitty — the one-stop shop for travelers to new cities:

When I first downloaded and opened the Mitty app, the home screen gave me a list of the 14 cities that are vetted and ready to explore, as well as the cities Mitty says are "coming soon."

My initial reaction was that the interface was sleek and simple. The icon art was tasteful but fun, and the app gave you just the right amount of information without going overboard.

To sign up, by the way, you can use your Facebook account, Google, your email address, or your phone number. I chose the last.

I went in and selected New York — where I live — to see how accurate it was with service options; since the app creators are based out of the UK, I thought it would be fairly telling.

I'm not sure why it asked if New York was my hometown, but I answered "Yes," under the assumption that this meant "as of right now" and not originally.

There were 17 services available here "with more services coming soon," according to the company. Some cities — like Dubai — had fewer services because "service availability varies by location."

The only app with an icon was Airbnb, which I found odd. Mitty gets a commission from the service providers every time someone uses their platform through Mitty's app, which it says doesn't affect the price for users, but co-founder and CEO Kaniyet Rayev said the Airbnb icon was the solution to a language issue.

"We had 'home sharing' instead of Airbnb," said Rayev. "But our beta users told us that it is confusing and some of them didn’t realise that Airbnb is Home Sharing. So we decided to change this tab to Airbnb."

25 chain-restaurant meals you should order on Weight Watchers

Denny's

For many who join Weight Watchers, the ability to eat anything – as long as it’s within your SmartPoints budget – is often a deciding factor in choosing the popular diet program over other, more restrictive eating plans.

The flexibility to track meals from popular restaurant chains within the Weight Watchers app helps members make better choices when dining out. While it isn’t recommended to eat out every day due to the added salt, butter, and oils used in restaurant cooking, it’s nice to know that when needed, you can still dine out while on Weight Watchers.

Whether grabbing something during your lunch break at work or meeting friends for happy hour, there are a variety of Weight Watchers friendly meal options you can eat at many popular restaurant chains that won’t break your SmartPoints bank.

Check out some of the best and lowest point restaurant meals below.

Applebee’s offers a variety of low point dishes to choose from.

As a restaurant that once was endorsed by Weight Watchers, it’s not surprising that Applebee’s has many great low-point choices.

The Thai Shrimp Salad, which features wonton strips and Thai peanut dressing, will only cost you nine SmartPoints.

For something a bit more filling, opt for the Cedar Grilled Lemon Chicken. At 13 SmartPoints this dish offers a hearty portion of chicken atop cranberry-pecan rice and quinoa.

If you’re looking to save your points, a great choice is a 6oz sirloin (five SmartPoints). You can add steamed broccoli and fresh fruit on the side to complete the meal without having to spend any additional points.

Chili’s Guiltless Grill menu features a good mix of options.

The Guiltless Grill menu at Chili’s offers a mix of meals that are under 630 calories each.

Weight Watchers members can enjoy the Mango-Chile Chicken with rice for 10 SmartPoints.

If you’d like to order something from the standard menu, fajitas are a good choice. Chicken (five SmartPoints) or shrimp (three SmartPoints) fajitas can be ordered without rice, cheese, or sour cream, allowing you to pile salsa, fajita veggies, and black beans — all zero-point foods — on top of a three-point tortilla for a filling meal.

Denny’s has lower point choices for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

When eating out for breakfast, Denny’s features a Fit Fare menu that includes breakfast options such as the Fit Slam — eggs scrambled with spinach and tomatoes, served with turkey bacon, fruit, and an English muffin for nine SmartPoints – and the Fit Fare Loaded Veggie Omelet (11 SmartPoints). Both can be ordered without bread to make for an even lower point meal.

For lunch or dinner, consider the Fit Fare Tilapia Ranchero (10 SmartPoints) to save on points or splurge a bit on the Fit Fare Sirloin Steak, which is served with red-skinned mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli for 14 SmartPoints.

5 teachers reveal the most hilarious answers they’ve received in the classroom

kids raising hands in classroom

  • All teachers can relate to the struggle of working in a classroom.
  • Many times, however, students give teachers some of their best laughs with answering test questions with hilarious options.
  • Other students freeze when called on randomly and say the first thing that pops into their heads, which often leads to a memorably fun moment.

It goes without saying, but being a teacher is hard work. Whether it’s dealing with difficult children, handling hours of essay grading, or coming up with creative lesson plans, all educators know the struggle of working in a classroom all too well. Each day, however, presents teachers with funny, memorable moments that often remain in their memories for years to come. Among these moments is the hilarious, somewhat random answers these professionals occasionally receive from their students.

As a student myself, I know just how difficult it can be juggling work, school, and a personal life. Because of this, I sometimes don't have enough time to study lesson material as much as I hope to. So when it comes time to take pen to paper and see how much knowledge I've retained from professors, I often blank. But over the years, many teachers have told me to just write a guess if I don't know the answer, so recently, I did just so.

On a current events news quiz, a professor asked the question, "What college lacrosse team is currently ranked #1 in the nation?"

I had no idea. I'm not a follower of sports at all and so, was about to leave the answer blank. But instead of doing that, I decided to write something that would leave my teacher with a laugh.

I wrote, "Really? If I have to know sports to answer this, then you should be able to tell me which Kardashian just gave birth. It's only fair."

A risky move, yes, but one that my teacher found hilarious. Upon hearing his reaction to my answer, I wondered what other hysterical answers teachers have received on tests and in the classroom, so we went ahead and spoke to five of them.

When you completely zone out thinking of your favorite food.

At the end of a long day, paying attention may seem impossible. Although it may appear that students are all paying close attention, more often than not, a few are probably zoned out.

That's exactly what Peg, a 12th-grade teacher, found.

"My all-time favorite story is when we were talking about a book — and I can't remember which one — and one of my students was gazing really thoughtfully, so I said to her, 'Do you have an idea about this?' or something along those lines."

The student's response: "No. I'm just thinking about butter."

When you spelling skills aren't quite up to par.

Victoria, a college communications professor, starts each semester off with allowing her students to choose one topic they're interested in that they'd like to work on. She said she found it to be a fun way to get the students involved with each other and to start the school year.

But she was utterly confused when she read one student's topic proposal.

"One student wrote 'youth-in-Asia' for 'euthanasia.' At first, I was confused because that wasn't a topic and then I read it and realized phonetically they meant 'euthanasia.' When I first looked at it I was like 'what are they talking about?'"

When you take the assignment too literally.

The "youth-in-Asia" debacle was not the only hilarious situation to happen to Victoria.

"I did have students complete an assignment once — it's kind of a terrible speech where they have to give bad examples of speaking," she told INSIDER. "One student took off their shoe and threw it across the room because their impression was one of the elements of bad speaking was making your audience feel attacked, so they took that pretty literally — they just threw their shoe in anger."

She added, "Ever since then, I had to tell students to not throw anything during their speeches to make sure that other students wouldn't get hurt."

14 foods with wonderfully healthy fats that you should add to your plate

$

Fat

Fat in food has gotten an unfair reputation as a belly-bulging demon that can wreck your diet and cause you to gain weight.

But the truth is, we need some fat in our diets to survive. The proper amount of the right kind of fat can fuel your body and help feed your brain. Many studies have shown that people who eat more fat don't get more fat, nor do they have higher rates of other health problems like cancer or heart disease.

It's true that fat packs a punch: it's got more energy, calorie for calorie, than carbohydrates or proteins do, which means a little bit can go a long way. But you probably don't need to track how much fat you're eating every day.

Incorporating healthy fat into a diet can help people stay full, survive harsh conditions, and perhaps even live longer than their peers. One 2016 study followed more than 126,200 men and women for more than 30 years, and found that those who ate more healthy, unsaturated fat and less carbs were less likely to die from all causes.

One of the main reasons we need to eat fat is because it provides some essential fatty acids that our bodies can't produce on their own.

That's not an excuse to slather a layer of heavy lard onto everything you eat. The kinds of fats we consume make a big difference. Researchers have discovered that replacing just 5% of a person's saturated fat intake with healthier polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats is associated with a roughly 13% to 27% reduction in mortalityEating the right kinds of fats, however, can help keep your body satiated, protect your cells, and keep your heart healthy.

Here are some prime examples of foods with the best fats that you could probably be eating more of:

SEE ALSO: There's a big difference between good and bad fat — here's how to pick the best heart-healthy fats

Whole eggs

Eggs are a great fatty addition to your diet because the dietary cholesterol (that's the term for the kind of cholesterol you eat) in them doesn't have much effect on your blood cholesterol (the kind your doctor measures).

In fact, eggs can help regulate how cholesterol is absorbed in the body because of their high concentrations of phospholipids: special kinds of fats that can also help control inflammation. Eggs also contain lutein and zeaxanthin, which may help keep our eyes healthy

Plus, eggs are a great protein source, which means you'll stay fuller for longer after an eggy meal. They also deliver omega-3 fatty acids, which are some of the essential fats the body can't produce on its own. (But there is not nearly as much omega-3 in eggs as there is in fish.)

For people with Type 2 diabetes, it's possible that eating eggs could increase the risk of developing heart disease, but more research on that is needed.

If you're otherwise healthy, go ahead and get that omelette — and don't bother with the egg-white substitution.

Oatmeal

Most people don't think of oatmeal as a fat-rich food, but part of the reason the breakfast keeps people full is that it's loaded with more fat than most other grains — mostly the good polyunsaturated and monounsaturated kinds.

Oats are also a great way to get more amino acids, as well as vitamins and minerals like B6 and iron. That's all in addition to the protein and calcium oats are known to deliver.

Spirulina

Spirulina is an ancient type of blue-green sea algae that has developed a cult following as a "superfood." It's often added to smoothies as a dark green powder.

The algae was a source of sustenance long before the age of blenders: The Aztecs dried and ate it in Mexico as early as the 1600s.

The cyanobacteria is rich in protein and iron, and also boasts a punch of amino acids and fat. Just two tablespoons of spirulina have a gram of fat. That's not nearly as much fat as an egg or piece of meat contains, but it's impressive for a piece of seaweed.

But be careful where you get your algae from — the National Institutes of Health warns that some contaminated spirulina can cause liver damage and harbor toxic metals and bacteria.

8 foods you may want to avoid on a cruise if you don't want to get sick

cruise ship food

Cruise ships are chock full of nightly gourmet meals and all-you-can-eat buffets. With so many mouth-watering options, it can be easy to consume everything in sight. But before you take a bite, you may want to think twice before reaching for certain food items.

You may remember when more than 300 people were sickened with the norovirus aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship in late 2017. And this isn't that uncommon. In such tight corridors, it can be easy to unintentionally spread the illness.

To avoid spending the trip trapped in your cabin, here are the foods you may want to avoid eating on a cruise ship if you want to stay healthy.

Play it safe and steer clear of sushi.

Popular cruise lines have onboard sushi bars. Although it may sound appetizing, it may be best to steer clear of the fishy delicacy — and really anything that’s not cooked all the way through. Sushi and other raw food items should be kept at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or colder, according to the Food and Drug Administration. When you have sushi sitting out at the cruise ship buffet, the temperature can be hard to regulate.

Clostridium perfringens — a bacteria commonly found in raw meat and poultry — is one of the most common foodborne illnesses in the US. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the bacteria is responsible for sickening 1 million people every year.

Although there are regulatory vessel sanitation standards put in place to avoid these mishaps, they still happen. Don’t risk your vacation over a California roll.

Make sure your eggs are cooked thoroughly.

It's no secret that eggs can contain salmonella so if you're ordering breakfast onboard avoid getting your eggs sunny-side up. The safest way to eat an egg aboard a cruise ship is to get it hard-boiled, according to the CDC. Runny or undercooked eggs can cause you to fall ill with possible salmonella or listeria poisoning if they aren’t cooked to at least 160 degrees

Make sure the dairy products are pasteurized.

Unpasteurized dairy can put you at risk for disease, according to the CDC. Most dairy products these days like milk, eggs, butter, and cheese are pasteurized, but it doesn’t hurt to double check with the onboard crew.

Uber has a plan to help drivers make an extra $100 a month by letting them sell you snacks and other necessities straight from their cars

Cargo Uber

  • Ride-sharing behemoth Uber announced its global exclusive partnership with in-car commerce startup Cargo today, which will roll out to San Francisco and Los Angeles immediately.
  • You'll be able to buy snacks and other necessities while you're on your ride — assuming your Uber driver is taking part in the program.
  • The items for sale will include energy bars, earbuds, and moisturizing masks. Some items will be free, and others will be paid.
  • Uber drivers can make an extra $100 per month on average from Cargo, the company says.

The next time you hail an Uber in San Francisco or Los Angeles, you may see a box full of snacks, beauty supplies and simple electronics for sale strapped to the center console of your driver's car.

The ride-sharing behemoth announced its exclusive global partnership with New York-based startup Cargo today. Uber drivers in those two launch cities will be eligible to pick up Cargo boxes loaded with snacks and other goodies from their local Uber service hub for free, and sell those items to riders on commission.

All told, Uber estimates that taking advantage of Cargo could make those drivers an extra $100 a month. For every product a driver distributes, even free samples, Cargo pays them $1, as well as 25 percent of the retail price.

Cargo cofounder Jeff Cripe tells Business Insider that "it's really just additional, risk-free income" for drivers.

This isn't a new idea: Some drivers for both Uber and Lyft have taken to selling basic items from their cars as a way to help make a more livable wage. Cargo itself launched in June 2017, with some 7,000 drivers already signed on. So far, Cargo has raised $7.3 million in venture capital funding.

The partnership with Uber will bring Cargo into more cars, especially as the deal expands beyond these first two cities. For Uber, it gives the company one more amenity for riders that rivals like Lyft can't match.

Importantly, Uber drivers aren't obligated to take part in this program, and can even sign up for Cargo competitors like Vendigo, if they so choose.

Here's how Cargo works, and how you might be buying snacks straight from your Uber driver:

Good news for hungry people: Some Uber drivers are going to start selling snacks and other goodies straight from their car, via a partnership with startup Cargo. But it's an optional program, so don't assume every Uber will have this.

The Cargo boxes fit neatly on the center console of the car, held securely down by ties. Items for sale might include RX Bars or hydrating masks. Some select items will even be free — but Cargo places a limit of four free items per passenger.

Every Cargo box has a unique four-digit code specific to each Uber driver. Passengers can simply scan the QR code to access the Cargo menu while on their ride...

11 easy ways to sneak more protein into your diet

Making sure protein is present in your diet is pretty important, as Harvard Medical School suggests that protein is essential for building hair, blood, enzymes, and antibodies. But making sure you actually get enough protein a day is even trickier, as easy protein shakes and protein bars tend to not provide the amount of daily protein we actually need.

But eating enough protein throughout the day does not have to be a hard task, as foods like yogurt, eggs, and quinoa are great ways to make sure you reach your daily protein goals. But it’s important to not go overboard, as registered dietitian nutritionist Joy Bauer told INSIDER that too much protein can have negative impacts on the body.

"Overdoing your protein intake (with excessive amounts) could mean extra calories and that could lead to weight gain—the exact opposite of what you’re aiming for. It could also be taxing on the kidneys," explained Bauer, MS, RDN.

To successfully sneak more protein in your diet, we spoke to other nutritionists and dietitians about some of the protein-boosting foods you need to add to your diet. Below are some of the items they recommend consuming regularly.

Eat two eggs for breakfast each morning.

"Eating two eggs for breakfast will provide you with over 12 grams of satiating protein,"registered dietitian Jillian Kubala told INSIDER. To make sure you are getting all those nutritional benefits from your eggs, Kubala recommended eating the whole egg instead of just the whites, as the yolks are packed with nutrients including vitamins and minerals.

Sip some collagen.

"Collagen peptides provide a clean source of protein that your body can easily absorb," Kubala added. Collagen peptides can be added to both hot and cold beverages like smoothies and coffee, she suggested.

Switch to Greek yogurt.

"If you regularly eat yogurt, consider making the switch to Greek yogurt," said IdealShape nutritionist and trainer Kami Price. Not only is Greek yogurt higher in protein, but it usually has less sugar too, she said.

7 terrifying enemy weapons that probably suck

Russia T-14 Armata tank

There are so many terrifying weapons that have come out in the last few years or are going through testing now that make it seem like the next war, no matter where it happens, will see friendly troops fighting a "War of the Worlds"-type conflict against unstoppable foes.

But many of these new weapons are either over-hyped, impossible to make work, or prohibitively expensive. In no particular order, here are seven of them you can probably stop worrying so much about:

SEE ALSO: These are the worst weapons an army could buy

1. That new nuclear-powered missile

The Burevestnik is Russia's splashy, new, nuclear-powered, nuclear-armed missile announced in a March press conference. In theory, this weapon would spew nuclear waste over a large area as it swiftly maneuvers past enemy air defenses and levels an unknown enemy capital (that's obviously Washington, D.C.).

For all of you kept awake by night terrors, feel free to suck down some NyQuil and enjoy the dreams, because that missile barely works. And by barely, we mean that its "unlimited range" is actually 22 miles, otherwise known as 878 miles less than a U.S. astronaut will drive in a diaper to win a love triangle. 'MURICA!

2. China's stealth jets, J-31 and J-20

The J-31 and J-20 would challenge the F-35 and F-22 for control of the skies, downing American fuel tankers at will and beating back flights of fifth-generation fighters too dumb to realize they were outmatched. Unfortunately, Chinese designers can't get the engines, as well as some other details, right.

So, while the newest J-fighters are still a threat (fuel tankers will be vulnerable when the planes carry their longest range air-to-air missiles), American fighters will still hold a firm edge against them in nearly all conditions, especially knife fights and stealth battles where the Chinese fighters' weak engines will make them have to choose between stealth and speed. Meanwhile, the American fighters can enjoy both at once, especially the F-22.

3. T-14 Armata tank

It's the tank that will savagely murder every Abrams tank it faces using its autoloader and massive cannon while shrugging off enemy rounds and missiles with no problem thanks to advanced protection systems that shoot missiles down! That'd be real scary if it weren't for the fact that it probably doesn't work — and it costs too much for Russia to buy even if they knew how to fix it. At present, this is a tank that's already 7 years overdue.

It looks like Russia might be throwing in the towel on ever deploying this boondoggle. The Russian Ministry of Defense allotted $417 million for upgrading existing vehicles and canceled the destruction of 6,000 current vehicles, almost as if they think they'll need the current generation for a long time.

21 quick and easy ways to boost your emotional intelligence

woman networking interview smiling happy

  • Emotional intelligence (EQ) is the ability to identify and manage your and others' emotions.
  • Research suggests that high EQ helps people succeed at work and in relationships.
  • There are plenty of easy ways to improve your EQ right away. For example: Learn what sets you off, assign specific names to your emotions, and give people the benefit of the doubt.

The term "emotional intelligence" dates back to a scientific paper published in 1990 — but interest in the topic didn't explode until psychologist and former New York Times reporter Daniel Goleman wrote a book about it a few years later.

Emotional intelligence (sometimes known as EQ) is the ability to identify and manage emotions — your own and other people's. Research suggests that high EQ helps people succeed at work and in relationships, and even helps them stay healthy. (Still, while Goleman and other experts say EQ predicts performance even better than cognitive ability, others aren't convinced.)

Psychologists say improving your EQ isn't easy — but if you're motivated and brave enough to find out how other people really see you, you'll likely see positive changes.

Below, we've listed some of the easiest and most practical ways to start developing your emotional intelligence muscle — today.

SEE ALSO: 15 things you're doing that make people dislike you immediately

Pick one area to improve in

Goleman recommends trying to improve one facet of emotional intelligence at a time. For example, maybe you want to get better at reading other people, or maybe you want to get better at introspection.

Writing on LinkedIn, Goleman advises asking yourself: "Where would I improve the most if I could enhance one competency?"

Surround yourself with people who don't necessarily agree with you

Once you've homed in on an area for improvement, solicit feedback from others on how you can get better. Leadership speaker and author Sara Canaday told CNN that it's important to ask people who may not share your perspective.

Canaday told CNN, "If you constantly surround yourself with people who believe just like you do, then you are hearing the same conversations, and you are not growing, and you are not learning to be open to perspectives."

Find a 'career mirror'

That's a tip from Spencer Rascoff, CEO of real-estate website and app Zillow. Rascoff previously told Business Insider that his wife is his "career mirror," meaning she knows and understands him even better than he knows and understands himself.

Rascoff's wife was the one who knew he was unhappy at his job in finance, and suggested he explore other options.

A close friend or family member can help reflect your emotions back to you when you're unable, or unwilling, to see them.

14 over-the-top celebrity engagement rings — and how much they reportedly cost

Miranda Kerr RIng

Celebrities do most things bigger and better than we civilians do. Engagement rings are no exception.

Not only are most celebs’ rings worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not millions but they also often have incredible back-stories.

Here’s the value of 14 extravagant celebrity engagement rings.

Cardi B’s ring from offset cost more than half a million dollars.

Celeb-of-the-moment Cardi B boasts a ring worth of $550,000, according to TMZ. Her fiancé Offset reportedly requested for it to be shaped like a raindrop, perhaps as a nod to the oft-repeated (at least in 2016) line “raindrop, drop top” from his group Migos’ hit song “Bad and Boujee.”

Emily Ratajkowski’s unconventional ring could spark a new trend.

Emily Ratajkowski kicked off the 2018 trend of surprise engagements when she married Sebastian Bear-McClard in New York City Hall early this spring, despite the general public having no clue they were engaged.

She and her husband hammered their own wedding bands, and she didn’t debut her engagement ring until last week on Instagram.

The unique ring features two diamonds — one square and one pear-shaped — side by side. So what’s it worth? Most likely between $50,000 to $90,000, according to Brilliant Earth‘s VP of strategy and merchandising Kathryn Money. She didn’t create the ring but shared her educated guess with Page Six.

Paris Hilton almost lost her $2 million ring while partying.

Paris Hilton’s ring is a stunner. Hilton’s ring, worth $2 million, boasts 20 carats. She memorably lost it at a club, only to find it again a bit later.

All the details of Quentin Tarantino's new movie, which stars Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Margot Robbie

Quentin Tarantino announced earlier this year that Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio would be starring in his upcoming ninth film, "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," which partly involves the Manson Family murders.

In April, Tarantino and DiCaprio teased a few details about the film at the Las Vegas industry event CinemaCon, and Margot Robbie confirmed to IndieWire that she was playing the role of actor Sharon Tate in the film.

Since then, a strong supporting cast has steadily filled in. A source close to the production told IndieWire last month that Damian Lewis, Dakota Fanning, and Emile Hirsch will appear in the film. Deadline also reported that Al Pacino has also joined the cast.

Pitt worked with Tarantino on 2009's "Inglorious Basterds," and DiCaprio appeared in 2013's "Django Unchained." Longtime Tarantino collaborators Tim Roth and Michael Madsen are also appearing in the film.

This week, Sony Pictures moved up the release date for "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" by two weeks — from August 9, 2019, the 50th anniversary of the Manson Family murders, to July 26, 2019.

Here's everything we know about Tarantino's upcoming ninth film:

SEE ALSO: Quentin Tarantino's next film will be released by Sony following the Harvey Weinstein scandal

DON'T MISS: Charles Manson was sentenced to 9 life sentences for orchestrating 7 gruesome murders with his cult 'family' — here's his life story

The film takes place in "Los Angeles in 1969, at the height of hippy Hollywood."

Tarantino described "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" in a statement in February, calling it, "a story that takes place in Los Angeles in 1969, at the height of hippy Hollywood. The two lead characters are Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio), former star of a Western TV series, and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt). Both are struggling to make it in a Hollywood they don't recognize anymore. But Rick has a very famous next-door neighbor ... Sharon Tate."

In July 2017, early reports of the film described its script as focused on the murder of actress Sharon Tate by Charles Manson's followers.

While Tarantino's February statement mentions Sharon Tate as a player in the movie, Tarantino previously said that the film would not center on Manson but on the year 1969.

At CinemaCon in April, Tarantino did not add much to the description of the plot, calling the project "very hush-hush and top secret."

It has been five years in the making.

Tarantino said in April that he had been working on the script for the film for half a decade.

"I've been working on this script for five years, as well as living in Los Angeles County most of my life, including in 1969, when I was 7 years old," he said. "I'm very excited to tell this story of an LA and a Hollywood that don't exist anymore. And I couldn't be happier about the dynamic teaming of DiCaprio and Pitt as Rick and Cliff."

It's a "'Pulp Fiction'-esque movie."

Deadline reported in January that DiCaprio would play an "aging actor" in a "'Pulp Fiction'-esque movie.""Pulp Fiction," Tarantino's 1994 classic, told a collection of interconnected stories.

At CinemaCon in April, Tarantino confirmed this sentiment by saying that "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood" is "probably the closest to 'Pulp Fiction' that I have done."

The best hybrid clubs and fairway woods for golf

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

best hybrid club best fairway woods

The Insider Pick:

  • Although you may be selecting hybrid clubs or fairway woods primarily to help you escape trouble on the course, it never hurts if the club delivers some extra distance, too.

  • The Ping G Series hybrid club sets itself apart from the pack with its ability to keep your swing on path while delivering added length.

Some golfers may resist the urge to add a hybrid club to their bags, preferring to stick to a traditional long iron or a regular 3-wood. However, if you’re a mid to high handicap golfer who’s late to the hybrid club party, you’re making a mistake.

For average golfers — and those who wish they were average — the hybrid club is a must-have in your bag. It looks a bit like a small wood, delivers a better sweet spot than a long iron, and can handle a multitude of lies.

Heck, if you’re a low handicap golfer, you will want a hybrid club, too, because of its versatility.

But there’s still a place for fairway woods in your bag, too. When the lie is just right or when you’re looking for a bit more accuracy off the tee, fairway woods deliver some important benefits to your game.

Features of hybrid clubs

Some people refer to the hybrid club as a rescue or utility club. Taylor Made introduced the first hybrid club in 2002.

Think of the hybrid club as the transition option in your golf bag, combining some of the best features of woods and irons. Versus long irons, the hybrids have a lower center of gravity and a wider sole, according to Dick’s Sporting Goods, making them easier to hit successfully. Additionally, most hybrids have a shorter shaft length by 2 or 3 inches versus a fairway wood, which makes the hybrid easier to control.

Many golfers will choose to use hybrids in place of the long irons in their bags, replacing 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-irons, for example. Some golf club manufacturers even create hybrid designs that can give you distance and loft equivalent to any iron in your golf set, including 8- or 9-irons.

You may find some players who will use the hybrid around the green for chip shots when needing to generate a lot of roll before reaching the hole, according to Golfalot. This club can serve a lot of different purposes on the golf course.

Some golfers may consider hybrids as only an option for average golfers and high handicap players. However, as Golfweek points out, more than half of professional golfers have at least one hybrid club in their bags.

Features of fairway woods

Before hybrid clubs began growing in popularity, nearly everyone carried a couple of fairway woods, usually some combination of 3-, 4-, and/or 5-woods. For many golfers, having at least one fairway wood is still a must, as it can do some things a driver or a hybrid cannot.

Fairway woods take their names from the original material (persimmon wood) used in these clubs, according to Golfballs. Modern fairway woods consist of steel or titanium, which delivers less weight than wood, allowing you to create plenty of club speed.

Some of them have the same weight-balancing designs that drivers use, allowing them to take advantage of modern technologies for better distance and accuracy versus fairway woods of several years ago.

For example, when you’re having problems hitting your driver accurately on tee shots, using your fairway woods off the tee should give you more accuracy without sacrificing too much distance, according to Golfbidder. Fairway woods deliver more arc on your ball than a driver, which will make it easier to keep the ball in the fairway.

When shopping for fairway woods, BobbyJones says it’s important to pay attention to the loft on the club face. Most beginners will want a bit more loft, maybe around 16 or 17 degrees, to help them gain more arc on their shots and to have more control.

Here are our top picks for the best hybrid clubs and fairway woods:

Read on in the slides below to check out our top picks.

The best hybrid club and fairway wood overall

Why you'll love it: The Ping G Series hybrid club sets itself apart from the pack with its ability to keep your swing on path while delivering added length over some other hybrid clubs.

Golfers don’t necessarily pick hybrid clubs because they’re looking for extra length, as a hybrid club is more of a club that helps you escape from trouble or gain accuracy on a day when you’re spraying your driver or long irons all over the golf course.

But it never hurts to have a little extra distance on any club in your bag, including the hybrid club. The best option for accuracy and distance is the Ping G Series hybrid.

The Ping G hybrid delivers an impressive feel that will give you great feedback on whether you’ve made solid contact, according to Plugged in Golf. One Ping G Series hybrid owner agrees, saying Ping’s hybrids consistently outperform those from other manufacturers.

The slight changes in the design of the G hybrid versus previous Ping hybrid clubs give it more length without sacrificing the accuracy and forgiveness that hybrids need to deliver. Hybrids normally bring consistency to the golf course, and the Ping G maintains that consistency while delivering the added length.

Today’s Golfer likes the slightly raised areas on the top of the club near the face, called turbulators, which keep the club on a steadier path to the ball. Some players also may notice a slightly faster club speed with the turbulators.

The Golf review agrees, saying many players pick up half a club length versus other hybrids by using the Ping G. It also allows you to make great shots from all kinds of lies, which is why many people want a hybrid club in the first place.

Meanwhile, Golf a Lot says this club works and feels more like a wood than an iron, which is different from some hybrid clubs, so make sure you’re comfortable with that type of style before purchasing it.

Pros: A hybrid that delivers a high level of feedback on your shots, delivers extra length versus other hybrids without sacrificing accuracy, design helps you maintain a proper swing path, handles all kinds of lies easily

Cons: Above average cost versus other hybrids, performs more like a wood which some won’t like

The best hybrid club for swing forgiveness

Why you'll love it: Callaway has migrated successful design elements from some of its drivers to the Rogue hybrid, giving this club the ability to let you have success even when you have a mis-hit.

Callaway has had a lot of success with its driver technology in recent years, helping average players have more success with driving the ball off the tee, even on slight mis-hits.

So it’s really good news to learn that Callaway has migrated some of its driver technology to its latest hybrid club, the Callaway Rogue.

As with other hybrid designs, the Rogue will help you escape trouble on the course. But when you’re playing off the tee or out of a good lie on the fairway, you’ll also receive excellent benefits from the Rogue.

As Golfalot says, the interior of the new design on the Rogue includes two vertical bars just behind the club face — called Jailbreak technology — that deliver a greater level of power to the ball by supporting the club face with extra rigidity.

Because the Jailbreak design has already proven successful in Callaway drivers from a couple of years ago, those purchasing the Rogue hybrid can feel comfortable that this club design is not being used for experimentation.

By using Jailbreak to provide stability and rigidity, Callaway’s designers are able to incorporate a thinner club face than you’ll find on most hybrid clubs, which gives you the forgiveness you need for balls struck a little off center, according to The Hackers Paradise. The Rogue has a large sweet spot.

In fact, the entire club face is able to deliver a high level of forgiveness and distance, which is a great feature for those who struggle to keep the ball in the fairway because of mis-hits, according to Golftec.

Golf Magazine likes the ability to select from five different club face lofts in the Callaway Rogue hybrid family, ensuring you can pick a club or two that will complement the other clubs in your bag nicely.

Worldwide Golf Shops customer CJ1010 says the Rogue is a smart choice for helping you escape trouble on the golf course, especially when you’re in the rough.

Pros: Helps average players avoid huge problems from mis-hits out of the rough or fairway, uses technologies that have been proven successful in Callaway drivers, delivers five different club loft options, large sweet spot

Cons: Expensive versus some other hybrid clubs, takes some practice to figure out the distance you can expect

The best inexpensive hybrid club

Why you'll love it: You don’t have to spend a lot to receive the benefits of a hybrid club when you select the Tour Edge Hot Launch 3 Hybrid.

If you have sticker shock most of the time when you’re looking at new golf clubs, you’re going to appreciate the Tour Edge Hot Launch 3 (or HL3) hybrid.

The HL3 hybrid club gives you a lot of similar mis-hit forgiving features that you’ll find in more expensive hybrids aimed at mid and high handicap players, including a large sweet spot that’ll keep your shots straighter without costing you a lot of distance.

You can pick from four different club face lofts with the Hot Launch 3, and all of them have an extremely low price point.

Beyond the low price, the HL3 has a really nice design. It starts with a rear center of gravity, which makes it easier to have success when hitting this club and trying to generate a bit more loft, according to Golf Magazine.

Mid and high handicap golfers often have trouble generating enough loft on shots, which makes this a key design feature in a hybrid made for this level of player.

HL3 hybrid owner Ains says the Hot Launch 3 hybrid is one of the easiest clubs to hit in his bag.

With balls struck just off-center, the Tour Edge has given the Hot Launch 3 hybrid club Variable Face Thickness technology, which keeps the ball on target better without significantly sacrificing distance, MyGolfSpy says.

The club face has more of a spring-like effect than some other hybrids, which leads to more distance as well, according to The Golf Warehouse.

In fact, Worldwide Golf Shops customer RonMC says the HL3 hybrid provides about 10 yards of additional distance versus other hybrids.

Pros: Much lower price point than many new hybrid clubs, sweet spot to forgive mis-hits is larger than you may expect at this price, available in a few different lofts, extremely easy to use successfully

Cons: Doesn’t quite have the longevity of some other hybrids, doesn’t give you advanced or cutting-edge technologies like some other hybrids

10 tricks to get the most out of your Costco membership (COST)

Costco

  • Costco memberships offer customers discounts that go beyond savings on bulk food items.
  • Many consumers may not know that Costco gives its members access to some of the best deals on travel, prescription drugs, gift cards, and more.
  • Here are 10 tricks from a consumer-savings expert for getting the most out of your Costco membership.

Like many consumers, I have something of a love-hate relationship with Costco. I’m still working through a lifetime supply of paper clips, and I rarely escape the warehouse store without at least $100 of items that weren't on my shopping list.

On the other hand, Costco offers top-quality products at fantastic prices, and some of those unplanned purchases have proved to be great buys. It wasn't on my list, but I am glad I bought a truMedic InstaShiatsu Shoulder and Neck Massager— and Costco offered it at a great price.

Consumer-savings expert Andrea Woroch said that she thinks a Costco membership can pay off, but it depends on your shopping style.

If all you want are the bales of toilet paper, you can do better shopping sales and using coupons. But, she said, there's more to Costco than 12-packs of paper towels. Particularly for business owners and people with larger families, Costco can be a great place for bargains.

Woroch shared some of her tips for getting the most out of your Costco membership.

SEE ALSO: We shopped at Costco and BJ's Wholesale to see which store had the better deals, and one had a clear edge over the other

1. Hone your Costco shopping list and stick to it.

"Don't become overwhelmed with the deals," Woroch said. "That's actually an easy way to blow your money." She advises coming up with what she calls a "strategic shopping plan." Make a list and focus on the items you want to buy. Limit the amount of time you spend wandering the aisles trying to justify buying a Vitamix or a five-year supply of Scotch tape.

It might take a few trips to find out which items you like and fine tune your list. My current favorite bargain is Verka organic yogurt. It’s delicious, and the 64-oz tub can cost the same as a 16-oz yogurt at the grocery store.

2. Check your pantry before you shop.

Woroch said she advises people to do a pantry inventory as you make your list, so you don’t buy something you already have or forget an item you need. Then stick to that list!

3. Don't forget Costco deals on large purchases.

You get more from your Costco membership when you think beyond groceries, according to Woroch. You can find great deals on clothing, patio furniture, even beds. She also said that other discount outlets might have low prices, but they won't match Costco's quality.

Woroch suggested checking what's available at Costco when you need to make a large purchase. Don't be like me: I recently discovered (too late) that I could have saved $300 on my new iPad had I bought it at Costco.
