14 things you can eat after getting your wisdom teeth removed

$
0
0

Teeth dentistWe tend to not think of wisdom tooth removal as being the most serious of surgeries — after all, it usually doesn’t take a long time and is almost always an outpatient procedure.

But it's easy to forget what a big impact your teeth make on your everyday life. According to the University of Washington School of Dentistry, in most cases, you should be able to go back to your normal diet around seven days after surgery.

Until then, here are some things you can eat while you’re recovering. If you have questions or experience anything troubling at any point surrounding your wisdom tooth removal, contact your dental professional right away.

Yogurt can be nice and soothing.

It’s creamy, soothing, comes in a zillion flavors — and is packed with probiotics to help soothe your angry microbiome with all those antibiotics you’re probably taking since you just had surgery.

According to a study published in the Journal of Family Practice, taking probiotics while you’re taking antibiotics can help reduce the symptom of antibiotic-associated diarrhea.

Non-chunky soups are a safe bet.

When you’re not feeling well, soup is a popular option for a reason — it’s usually packed with the balanced nutrition that your body needs in an easy-to-handle form.

But if you’ve just had your wisdom teeth out, you’re not going to be up to doing a lot of chewing for at least a few days. That means you should probably save the soups with big chunks of meat or difficult-to-chew vegetables for when you’re feeling better.

Stick to creamy soups, or soups with very soft vegetables cut into small, easy-to-manage pieces.

Kefir could add a tangy twist to your diet.

Much like yogurt, kefir also contains live and active cultures that your gut will love — but it’s tangier and more drinkable in texture than most yogurts. It’s just another convenient way to get your tasty and nutritious probiotic fix on.

While swim suit styles have evolved over the years, there are some things about summer in America that haven't changed much.

From camping trips to amusement park excursions, Americans have enjoyed the simple pleasures of warm-weather activities for decades. Keep scrolling to see 35 vintage photos of summer in the US.

Going to the beach remains a quintessential summer activity.

What we wear to the beach may evolve, but sea and sand will never go out of style.

There were plenty of ways to enjoy a day on the sand, from a romantic picnic...

People have enjoyed eating outdoors for centuries, according to research librarian and food historian Lynne Olver. But the modern picnic basket is a relatively recent innovation.

"The largest [woven baskets] seem to resemble trunks, and that might be where we get the picnic hamper from,"the late Olver told NPR in a 2013 interview. "Picnic basket kits as we know today — having placeholders for dishes and silverware and glasses and napkins — actually begin to appear at the very dawn of the 20th century."

9 of the wildest excuses real people have used to get out of a bad date

dinner date

In the age of ghosting, swiping right, and catfishing, dating has never been more complicated. Dates can be magical and fun, but sometimes they go south so quickly you find yourself literally climbing out of a window to escape it. Here are ten horror stories Reddit users shared about the bad dates they had and the creative excuses they used to get out of them.

Because they are curated from Reddit, INSIDER cannot independently authenticate these stories— but that doesn't mean they aren't highly amusing.

1. They climbed out of a window to escape an ex.

"I've never bailed on a date, but once I climbed out of the window to avoid someone I'd been on a bad date with. He had come into the living room and started talking to one of my roommates while I was in my other roommate's room down the hall. We exchanged a look and she wordlessly opened her window, and I climbed out of it and trotted out behind our dorm to the jogging track, took a right and hightailed it to the cafeteria. I brought back dinner for my roommate and by that time, the guy was gone!"— Reddit user LilyKnightMcClellan

2. They lied to escape a marriage proposal.

"Mine didn't even turn into a date. I played with a bowling team once a week and chatted with a guy that bowled on the same nights with his family. We finally made a date, and as soon as I got in his car he asked me to marry him. He pulled a ring out of the glove compartment and said he was in the Navy and was scheduled to be relocated to Germany in two weeks. I was shocked and scared. I told him he was nice and I would write to him but it was just weird, I never heard from him again."— Reddit user Xxfoxontherun

3. They ran to avoid getting in a windowless van.

"Met at a cafe. Actually walked toward the wrong dude (similar haircut, blurry photos) we realized what happened and laughed it off. Told the real dude about it when he showed up and he was not amused strike one, that's hilarious.

"Got coffee, sat in a nearby public park. He brags about his career in professional gambling, looks surprised I know some basic easy details. Insults his friends. Lets me know ahead of time he parked his car and has to move it. Fair enough. I offer to walk toward it and stand there while he moves around the block — parking is tough here.

"Walks me a mile, passing many open parking places, to under an overpass. Still bright out but this is weird. The car is a large windowless white van in which he reveals he is currently sleeping because his roommate has ‘sexiled’ him semi-permanently. I don't buy it.

"It becomes clear he wants me to get in the van to help move it. At this point I let him know that I don't think I'm getting in there, but thanks. Quick hug goodbye, leave, he's incredulous. Doesn't push it, drives off. To his credit, he texts later in the day apologizing for creeping me out."— Reddit user babelincoln27

Here at Insider Picks, we love to make recommendations based off of our own personal experiences, but for some products (like sneakers) the opinions of consumers at large can also speak volumes. While sneakerheads with a keen eye for trends can usually get an idea for what's cool and what's not, there's no better way to determine a shoe's popularity than with sheer sales numbers.

To help you pick out a sure winner, we rounded up best-selling Nike sneakers in July for men and women.

With a variety of classic designs like the Air Force 1 and Air Max 1 and modern runners like the VaporMax and Epic React, there's a cool pair for everyone on this list. Whether you're just interested in current trends or you're shopping for back to school season, these pairs will make you look good and feel even better.

Shop all sneakers and apparel at Nike here.

Check out Nike's best-sellers for the month of July, below:

Men's Nike Air Force 1 '07

Nike Air Force 1 '07, $90, available in two colorways

The Air Force 1 originally debuted in 1982 as Nike's premier basketball sneaker. It featured a high top strapped design that was ideal for the court, but the low-top version quickly became a popular choice strictly for style. Over its more than 30 years of existence, there have been a handful of special editions and collaborations, but the all-white color remains a classic, as it can be worn with anything.

Men's Air Jordan 1 Mid

Air Jordan 1 Mid, $110, available in 11 colorways

The Air Jordan 1 is largely responsible for modern-day sneaker enthusiasm. In 1985, a time where most sneakers were white, Michael Jordan changed the game with a pair of black and red sneakers that he wore against NBA rules. Instead of conforming, Nike happily paid the fine and continued to put out many great colorways for fans to wear and collect. This colorway, in particular, features a black suede upper with red Swooshes on the profile of the shoe and blue Swooshes on the medial side.

Men's Nike Epic React Flyknit

Nike Epic React Flyknit, $150, available in 11 colorways

Using Nike's most innovative foam cushioning system, React, the Epic React Flyknit provides super soft, yet durable comfort that lasts as long as you can run. Compared to the similarly soft Nike Lunarlon cushioning, you get 13% more energy return with React. These shoes are made for runners and the bold pure platinum, bright crimson, and black colorway even looks fast.

Phillip Haumesser is a natural light photographer who discovered his passion for photography three years ago when he began taking pictures of his children.

"You start to see the world in a whole new way, and once you see it, you can't unsee it," he told INSIDER.

Keep reading for a behind-the-scenes look at Haumesser's process that illustrates how he finds beauty in everyday moments... and how different things can look to a photographer.

When Haumesser's wife surprised him with a digital camera for his birthday in 2015, he discovered a new hobby.

"When I started taking pictures of the kids, I became obsessed with it," he said.

Like most beginners, he started by shooting with his camera's auto mode.

Since he wasn't capturing the shots he wanted, he switched to manual mode and "just started experimenting and practicing."

"Experience is the best teacher, so I learned the most just by picking up my camera and shooting and making mistakes and learning from them," Haumesser said.

He also honed his craft by watching camera tutorials on YouTube.

  • Ivanka Trump's fashion company announced on Tuesday that it would be shutting down.
  • "After 17 months in Washington, I do not know when or if I will ever return to the business, but I do know that my focus for the foreseeable future will be the work I am doing here in Washington," she said in a statement.
  • Here is a look back at her fashion business career.

Ivanka Trump's fashion label is closing up shop.

On Tuesday, the first daughter and White House adviser informed fans that she would be closing down her business of seven years to focus on her work in Washington.

"After 17 months in Washington, I do not know when or if I will ever return to the business, but I do know that my focus for the foreseeable future will be the work I am doing here in Washington," she said in a statement. "So making this decision now is the only fair outcome for my team and partners."

Abigail Klem, who took over as president of the company when Trump stepped down from day-to-day operations in 2017, said in a statement that she and others at the company are "incredibly proud of the brand we have built and the content and product we've developed."

"We've seen strong sales since the brand's inception, which continued through this year with the successful launch of our rapidly growing e-commerce business," Klem said.

The brand was thrust into the limelight when Trump's father, Donald Trump, was elected president in November 2016. Initially, this played in its favor: according to The Wall Street Journal, online sales surged at the company in 2016 and early 2017.

Since then, it has come under increased pressure as anti-Trump supporters call for consumers to boycott the brand and any of the stores that stock it.

Take a look at the story behind the brand below:

Trump made her first foray into the fashion business with the launch of her fine jewelry company. She opened her first boutique on Manhattan's Upper East Side in 2007.

The pricey collection consisted of rings, necklaces, and bangles that cost up to $25,000.

At the end of 2010, she launched her new collection of shoes, which included 150 styles from "office-friendly pumps and special-occasion looks to sandals and sneakers," Footwear News reported at the time.

The shoes were sold at department stores such as Macy's and Lord & Taylor.

Shoes and handbags paved the way for her apparel collection, which launched in 2011 just after her first child, Arabella Rose, was born.

"I wanted to build a strong and sustainable collection that is not overly trend-conscious," Trump told InStyle.com in 2011. "I wanted timeless glamour."

US airlines just gave into China's 'Orwellian' demands over Taiwan — here's every company that's done the same

Delta Air Lines plan

US airlines had until July 25 to delete any mention of Taiwan as a country from their websites, or face a raft of unclear but potentially damaging consequences from Chinese authorities.

American Airlines and Delta Air Lines have made the change — dropping any country descriptor for the airport in Taipei — and United Airlines is expected to shortly follow suit.

Beijing claims a number of contested territories, but is particularly sensitive about Taiwan, a self-ruled island that it considers to be a province of China. It has used fines, public shaming, and the introduction of social credit scores for corporations to force foreign companies to adopt its political rhetoric.

These are all the companies that have been pressured by China to make political changes within the last 18 months.

SEE ALSO: China wants to dictate how foreign airlines refer to Taiwan and the US is having none of it — this is how every major airline is responding

Audi

Audi AG was one of the first countries to be targeted in a new wave of political crackdowns on foreign companies.

At a press conference in March last year, Audi used a map of China that left off Taiwan, South Tibet, and part of the northwestern Xinjiang region.

Audi then apologized for using an "incorrect geographical map."

"The map offended Chinese people. It was a serious mistake for which Audi wants to sincerely apologize," the company said in a statement.

Muji

In August 2017, Muji imported to China 119 clothes hangers that listed Taiwan as the "country of origin". It emerged this year that the Shanghai Administration for Industry and Commerce fined the Japanese retailer 200,000 yuan ($31,280) as punishment.

Muji was accused of breaking advertising law which protects China's "dignity or interests," and is still one of the most serious breaches.

But in October 2017, Muji again drew the ire of China's National Administration of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation for publishing what the agency deemed to be an incorrect map of China in a store catalog. The map left off the Japanese-controlled Senkaku Islands which both Beijing and Taipei make claims to.

At the time Muji took "appropriate measures" and destroyed the catalog.

Mariott International

When Marriott International listed Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan as countries in a questionnaire email to customers in January, the Shanghai arm of the Cyberspace Administration took action.

Authorities interviewed Marriott managers in China about a potential breach of cybersecurity and advertising laws and Marriott was ordered to take down its website and app for a week.

The CEO of Marriott International issued a public apology saying the company "respects and supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of China... We recognize the severity of the situation and sincerely apologize."

An intense heat wave is sweeping over Europe, triggering deadly fires across the region.

In Greece, a state of emergency was declared on Monday as huge forest fires killed 74 people across several towns and sent thousands running to escape flames devastating entire villages.

But Greece isn't the only European country sweltering.

Roaring temperatures and weeks of drought contributed to several major wildfires across Sweden over the last week and, according to AccuWeather, Madrid, Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and Stockholm are expected to have their highest temperatures of the year this week.

This is every country in Europe battling fires right now:

Greece is experiencing its worst fire crisis in more than a decade.

Wildfires are raging in regions around Athens and have affected numerous towns including Mati, Kineta, Rafina, and Melissi.

Hot, dry temperatures exacerbated by high winds caused flames to spread throughout the region on Monday.

"It's like we're at war," a Greek firefighter told local media.

On Tuesday, the bodies of 26 adults and children were found close to the sea in Mati, and appear to have died sheltering each other from the fire.

Sweden's unusually high temperatures have caused several fires to break out.

Almost 100 people were forced to leave their homes as more than 80 wildfires ripped through the country over the last week.

The number of fires in the region were reduced to around 20 by Tuesday, but in that time Sweden lost an estimated 25,000 hectares of forest.

The country usually experiences mild weather, and generally lacks the resources required to deal with large fires. The government has reached out for help from the military and other nations as fires spread above the Arctic Circle.

On Monday, European nations sent hundreds of firefighters to tackle the worst blazes that Sweden has ever seen.

Britain is continuing to experience its longest heat wave since 1976.

Weather has also been unseasonably dry, with just two inches of rain falling between June 1 and July 16, making it the direst summer ever.

Satellite photos released by the country's national weather service shows the country has been so hot and dry that it has turned from green to brown.

The conditions have been blamed for several wildfires which have spread across northwestern England over the last month.

The 7 zodiac signs that are the best in long-distance relationships

$
0
0

Dear John

Long-distance relationships require a huge amount of commitment and sacrifice and are definitely not for the faint of heart. Many of them fail because one or more partner isn’t willing or able to put in the necessary work or money to make them successful, like scheduling video chats or booking trips to see each other regularly.

You probably already know that, for better or worse, your zodiac sign has a lot to do with your love life. It can reveal whether you’re more prone to casual or serious relationships, how likely it is that you’ll remain loyal, and how romantic you are.

Long-distance relationships work best when there is a great deal of trust, open communication, planning, and when each partner has their own independent social life. Using Astrology.com to discover the traits associated with each sign coupled with the things that make long-distance relationships successful, we determined the zodiac signs that have the best chance of surviving the distance. Of course any sign is able to make it work if they try hard enough, but this is just for fun. Astrology fans read on:

Geminis (March 21 to April 19) are great at communicating.

The best way to keep your long-distance relationship, or any relationship for that matter, healthy is to maintain an open line of communication. You won’t be able to see or talk to your partner as regularly as you would if you were living in the same house, and that makes it an absolute must that you are both texting, video chatting, calling, sending carrier pigeons, whatever you need to do to make sure you both stay in tune with each other’s lives as much as possible.

Geminis have the whole communication thing down pat. Sometimes even oversharing, they really love giving and receiving information. They’ll listen as you detail your day, and they’ll tell you everything that’s been going on with them so you never feel like you’ve missed anything.

Virgos (August 23 to September 22) are loyal and honest.

Trust is a big factor in the success of a long-distance relationship, and you need to be able to fully trust your partner even when you don’t always know exactly what they’re doing. One way to do that is to choose a partner who is effortlessly loyal and always honest, like a Virgo.

Virgos are known to be picky, and that goes for their romantic choices as well. Never one to jump into things without analyzing all aspects, a Virgo has likely spent a long time thinking about whether or not a person is right for them. And once they’ve made the choice, they are devoted to the end. They can lean towards jealousy at times, but being open and honest should help calm that.

Capricorns (December 22 to January 19) stay level-headed during arguments.

The meaning and intention of words can be lost via text or email and this, along with the tension of being apart, can lead to some pretty big arguments you may not have had in-person. Whether they’re real problems or meaningless squabbles, it can be hard to reach a fair compromise over the phone.

Luckily, Capricorn will be able to remain practical and level-headed during both kinds of arguments and possibly help to keep them from going too far. They have a determination to succeed, so they won’t let a relationship go so quickly without putting in all the work needed to fix the problem.

Cell phones and computers are slowly taking hold in one of the most mysterious countries in the world — and they’re not making people any happier

  • Bhutan, one of the most mysterious countries in the world, has resisted modern technology for decades.
  • But lately, cell phones, computers, and TV has transformed the way of life in Bhutan.
  • Reuters photojournalist Cathal McNaughton documented everyday life in Bhutan to show how industry and technology are taking hold.

For many years, the South Asian nation of Bhutan has resisted technology — no television, no cell phones, not even a single traffic light.

But lately, outside influences have slowly started to take hold of Bhutan's 800,000 people.

Teens, wearing jeans and English soccer jerseys, spend much of their time on their cell phones and playing computer games at internet cafes. Adults while away their nights at karaoke bars and pool halls. Meanwhile, industrial plants and construction sites are popping up across towns, introducing modern problems to a largely traditional culture.

Reuters photojournalist Cathal McNaughton traveled to Bhutan earlier this year to speak with residents in the changing nation and document their everyday lives. Although Bhutan's government pioneered the concept of "Gross National Happiness" to measure its success, McNaughton found that modern challenges are taking their toll.

Here's how technology is starting to change one of the most mysterious countries in the world.

Here's what you need to know about the different types of 'intermittent fasting' and their benefits

$

girl eating breadWhether you’re in the best shape of your life, or you’re trying to meet certain health and fitness goals, you’ve probably done some Googling to find the best ways to get the mind and body of your dreams.

And in your search, you’ve probably come across the process of intermittent fasting.

If you’re trying to lose weight, boost your metabolism, increase your endurance, or just generally feel a little less sluggish after hiking up to your fourth-floor walk-up, intermittent fasting could help you get there.

But there are definitely a few things you need to know before you start.

Intermittent fasting is different for everyone.

The general concept of intermittent fasting works like this: you eat almost whatever you want for a certain period of time, and then for a given amount of time you try not to consume anything other than water, tea, black coffee and other non-caloric liquids.

It sounds pretty simple, but there are actually a few different types of intermittent fasting to choose from.

Of course, everyone is different. So it’s important you choose a plan that best fits your needs, your lifestyle, and your goals.

But if you’re ready to dive right in, here are five different types of intermittent fasting that have become increasingly popular over the years.

The ‘5:2’ fast allots five days for eating and two days for restriction.

The 5:2 intermittent fasting diet works by allotting you five days a week to eat whatever you want, and restricting your diet for two days to 500 calories or less, according to Healthline.

These two days of fasting don’t have to be one right after the other but are instead intermixed throughout the week to give your body time to recover. But on the non-fasting days, you’re encouraged to eat how you normally eat.

Healthline reported that the 5:2 diet may have several impressive health benefits, including weight loss, reduced insulin resistance and decreased inflammation.

The ‘16/8’ method allows you to eat during an eight hour window.

The 16/8 diet is a daily fasting routine that requires you to eat during an eight-hour window during the day while fasting for 16 hours. This includes the time you sleep — so you don’t have to worry about that negatively impacting your day, according to Women's Health Magazine.

The time frame varies depending on the person. Some people fast for 14 and eat for 10 — play around with it for yourself. But experts say you can fit in two to three small meals throughout your allotted eating time and still get the benefits whether you fast for 14 or 16 hours.

For many, this is the easiest way to fast as it doesn’t take too much effort or planning.

These photos reveal why the 26-year-old organizer of the disastrous Fyre Festival could spend 10 years in prison

Fyre

  • Fyre Festival organizer Billy McFarland pleaded guilty to wire-fraud charges in March. He will be sentenced on Thursday.
  • The 26-year-old was arrested in June 2017 after being accused of misleading investors who had poured investment into Fyre Media, the company behind the Fyre Festival.
  • On Tuesday, July 24, the SEC announced that McFarland, two companies he founded, a former senior executive, and a former contractor had agreed to settle the fraud charges made against them. According to the SEC's press release, McFarland admitted to charges that he defrauded more than 100 investors out of $27.4 million.
  • Here's a look back at what happened at the Fyre Festival.

Billy McFarland, the 26-year-old founder of the nightmarish Fyre Festival that left hundreds of attendees stranded in the Bahamas, is paying his dues.

On Tuesday, the SEC announced in a press release that McFarland, two companies he founded, a former senior executive, and a former contractor agreed to settle the charges made against them. According to the SEC's press release, McFarland admitted to charges that he defrauded more than 100 investors out of $27.4 million and agreed to a permanent office-and-director bar. The SEC's charges were related to McFarland's running of Fyre Media, the company behind the Fyre Festival, and Magnises, an events and membership company.

McFarland will be sentenced on related criminal charges on Thursday. He pleaded guilty to wire-fraud charges in March and could spend eight to 10 years in prison in addition to paying a fine, according to Bloomberg.

On June 12, McFarland was arrested again on charges of selling fake tickets under a different company, called NYC VIP Access, starting in 2017. If convicted on the additional fraud charges, McFarland could face an extended prison sentence, likely of an additional two years, according to Time.

Fyre Festival promised to offer attendees a VIP experience when they set off to Great Exuma in the Bahamas. But the reality was very different, as attendees encountered delayed flights, half-built huts to sleep in, and cold cheese sandwiches to eat. And that doesn't even include the disastrous trip home.

The luxury festival — tickets for which started at $1,200 — was advertised as two weekends in paradise, but it turned into a nightmare.  Take a look at festivalgoers' expectations compared with the reality they encountered, which is currently being developed into a TV series for Hulu.

And here's the full Fyre Festival promo video:

The three-day party was supposed to be on a private beach on the island of Great Exuma in the Bahamas.

It was supposed to be over two weekends in 2017: April 28-30 and May 5-7.

It was described as an "immersive music festival."

Ninja, Tyler Blevins,

Up until recently, it wasn't that easy to figure out what exact PC and specs Tyler Blevins — most commonly known by his game streaming tag "Ninja"— uses to play Fortnite.

Recently, Ninja teamed up with computer parts company NZXT to create "Ninja's Build," which includes all the parts you need to play "Fortnite" at Ninja's all-important 125 frames per second. Unbox Therapy also released a video with the full rundown of Ninjas Build.

There are a few things that aren't quite accurate in NZXT's Ninja's Build, however. I spotted a few differences after checking out some brief moments where Ninja reveals his PC during his livestreams.

Check out Ninja's real build, based on NZXT's Ninja's Build and his Twitch streams where he shows off his PC:

Greece is burning because dry, blisteringly hot conditions are hitting Europe hard this summer — take a look

greece wild fire

Greece is in mourning.

At least 80 people are dead, some who tried to flee into the water to save themselves, as wildfires raged through the countryside and town toward the sea near Athens, Greece this week.

But the problem of dry and fiery conditions this summer isn't just one for the Greeks. The entire European continent has been suffering through blistering heat waves, and fires have roared through regions from the Arctic Circle down to the Mediterranean Sea.

It's all part of a trend with no end in sight. In a report from climate experts to the European Commission, released earlier this year, scientists predict that dry, hot conditions will fuel aggressive wildfires that could spread more easily across the Mediterranean as the region dries up. The damage may not end at the fire lines, and could have a dangerous impact on plant pests and diseases, too.

Take a look at what Europe's been dealing with, and the reasons why:

The Greeks began a three day period of mourning on Tuesday. At least 80 people are dead as a result of the fires that broke out late Monday near Athens. The death toll is expected to rise.

The last time flames were this bad in the country was in 2007, when wildfires that broke out on the Peloponnese peninsula killed 64 people.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated, but some officials think the blazes may have been started deliberately. Sometimes people start fires to clear land for building.

20 surprising things you can’t bring to the Disney parks

disneyland 2012

Disney Parks are where dreams come true unless, of course, your dream is to do or bring one of the many things that break official Disney rules. The rules aren't arbitrary, and the company's primary goal for them is to keep their guests, employees, and animals safe.

Even so, some of the banned items can be a little confusing, and many of them are things you would never have thought about.

To avoid an awkward situation at the security check, continue reading for some of the surprising things you can't bring to the Disney Parks, according to the official Disney rules.

You can’t bring your own alcohol.

This is kind of a no-brainer. You’ll have to get your booze from one of the dining locations in the parks that serves it in Florida (you won't find it in California). People looking to have a drink in the Magic Kingdom got some great news this year since the park is finally allowing their restaurants to serve it after a decades-long ban.

Folding chairs are a no.

You might be tempted to bring a folding chair and secure the perfect spot for the fireworks or the afternoon parade, but Disney has put a stop to that. You’ll just have to sit on the ground or stand along one of the several viewing spots in the parks.

Balloons aren’t safe for the animals.

The Magic Kingdom’s Main Street may feel like it has more balloons than people sometimes, but not everywhere on the property is as welcoming to balloons. They aren’t allowed at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, which Disney says is for the safety of their animals.

We compared Netflix to FilmStruck, the streaming site for movie buffs — and for most people, there's a clear winner (NFLX)

Netflix filmstruck

Netflix may be among the most popular of streaming service sites, ranked high with others like Hulu and Amazon Prime Video, but there's one audience these sites haven't heavily catered to: classic film enthusiasts.

It's a void that FilmStruck caught onto when it began offering movie streamers a repertoire of rare, classic, foreign, and independent movies in 2016. The streaming site is owned by Time Warner's Turner Classic Movies and boasts hundreds of films dating back to 1917, including 600 newly-obtained films from Warner Bros.

In short, it's a movie buff's dream come true.

As someone with a limited knowledge of classic Hollywood films, I cancelled my $7.99 monthly Netflix subscription and replaced it with a $10.99 FilmStruck plan as an educational experiment.

Here's how the two services stack up to each other:

SEE ALSO: All 73 of Netflix's notable original shows, ranked from worst to best

The cost for a FilmStruck subscription is about the same as one with Netflix.

Netflix currently offers three plans: a basic plan with a monthly fee of $7.99, a standard plan costing $10.99, and a premium option for $13.99.

FilmStruck's most basic plan costs $6.99 and includes the site's Turner Classic Movies collection in its entirety, as well as archival TCM content.

An upgrade from that is what I have, a $10.99 plan that features everything in the basic plan and also access to the Criterion Channel, an exclusive 1,000-movie collection of art house and classic flicks like Martin Scorsese's "Taxi Driver" starring Robert De Niro.

With the $10.99 monthly plan, you also get access to rare Criterion bonus content, like actor interviews and trailers. Features like this is where FilmStruck really shines as a movie buff's go-to streaming site.

There's also a one-time annual plan that costs $99.

The FilmStruck app performed just as well as the Netflix app.

Besides educating myself on Hollywood's Golden film era, I downloaded FilmStruck to have something to do on my commute every day. I've got about a 30-minute bus ride to and from work, so on average I could finish a movie every two days.

The app was intuitive and movies streamed smoothly, which I didn't expect. I had no trouble at all with glitches while watching a movie, even though I wasn't connected to WiFi.

Another issue I was worried about having with FilmStruck was the app not remembering where I left off during a movie. Without fail, whenever I went back to my watchlist to start watching again, I didn't have to scrub to a certain scene — it automatically started playing where I had stopped it previously.

The web version was a totally different story.

I tried watching a movie on my laptop one night and the website buffered constantly and was maddeningly slow. I gave up on using my laptop and stuck with my iPhone 6s. Watching movies on a small screen doesn't bother me.

I don't have Chromecast or Roku, but I imagine that'd be the best way to watch it outside of the app.

Netflix's browsing function is way more sophisticated than FilmStruck's, but I still had a blast simply movie surfing.

FilmStruck's home page is organized similarly to Netflix's, with the user's watchlist and browsing tabs in clear view. You'll find genres, like Drama and Classic Hollywood, listed in block buttons, as well as a "Recently Added" category, a "Leaving Soon," and a "Popular" category.

The problem with FilmStruck is that the site's design and display doesn't make it easy to navigate, and as far as how movies are separated into genres, there's a lot of crossover, meaning each genre isn't very defined.

For the most part you end up aimlessly browsing through FilmStruck's gigantic stock of movies, which is honestly enjoyable in its own right.

It was overwhelming at first, but I ended up taking a few hours one night and looked through the entire alphabetized list of movies. I added any that I even remotely recognized, but had never seen, to my watchlist and proceeded to cross them off over the course of a few weeks.

These were the iconic ones, the critically-acclaimed films I'd just never taken the time to watch: "Casablanca,""Singin' in the Rain," anything with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers (there's an entire collection devoted to the famous dancing pair), lots of Bette Davis, "The Red Shoes," etc.

The site makes it easy to save the movies you want to watch. For example, you can hover over the icons for movies and press the "+" button to add it to your watchlist just like you can on Netflix.

But if you accidentally click into a movie's description and then click back, forget it — the site will take you all the way back to the top of the screen and won't direct you to where you left off browsing.

So overall, Netflix is a little bit more polished in how it categorizes and displays its movies.

The best Nerf guns and Super Soakers you can buy

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

best nerf gun and super soaker

The Insider Pick:

  • The thrill of victory, and occasionally, the agony of defeat. The relatively painless ping of being struck by a foam “dart.” The strategizing, camaraderie, and exercise disguised as fun.

  • That’s what you get when you take to the field armed with the Nerf N-Strike Elite Strongarm Blaster. We've also included several other Nerf guns and Super Soakers so you can choose your favorite(s).

Back in 1970, Parker Brothers released the first Nerf product — a four-inch foam ball packaged in a box proclaiming, “Throw it indoors. You can’t damage lamps or break windows. You can’t hurt babies or old people.” I’m old enough to have received one of those balls for Christmas that year. My brothers and I thought it was fantastic to have a ball we could toss around inside the house.

A wide variety of Nerf balls and toys followed, but it was in the 1990s that the brand, which has been owned by Hasbro since 1991, took off in a huge way with the introduction of foam-bullet-shooting Nerf Blasters. These plastic toy guns are near-ubiquitous. It would be hard to find a 12-year old boy or girl who doesn’t own at least one.

There’s also a sizable percentage of older teens and twenty-somethings still getting together for Nerf battles after school or work — and Hasbro specifically targets them with the high-powered Nerf Rival line, which is not recommended for kids under the age of 14.

In the name of all things fun, we decided to round up the best Nerf Blasters and Super Soakers you can buy. So gather up a few of your buddies, arm yourself with one — or more — of these foam-and-laugh shooters, and let the games begin.

Here are our top picks for the best Nerf guns and Super Soakers:

Read on in the slides below to check out our top picks.

The best Nerf gun overall

Why you'll love it: Loaded with great features, the Nerf N-Strike Elite Strongarm Blaster shoots foam darts up to 75 feet and fires six at a time.

Big enough to look impressive, yet not so gigantic that it’s awkward to hold or aim, the Nerf N-Strike Elite Strongarm Blaster has a rotating barrel that holds six Elite darts. Shoot them one at a time, or hit the Slam Fire slide and send all six hurtling towards your opponent in one go — It’s totally up to you.

The barrel easily flips down to reload, so you won’t be on the sidelines for long. While the Blaster comes with six Elite darts, you’ll definitely want to purchase more, as they have a way of disappearing into bushes or trees.

The Nerf N-Strike Elite Strongarm Blaster is the bestselling Nerf gun on Amazon, and it’s exclusive to the site. Happy customers have reviewed it nearly 4,000 times and the Blaster has an average of 4.5 stars.

Most buyers praise the Blaster’s accuracy, ease of loading, and lack of batteries. On the downside, a few buyers complained that the barrel jams easily.

Pros: Great price, no need for batteries, fairly accurate and far shooting

Cons: A few complaints that the barrel jams or stops rotating after a few uses

Buy the Nerf N-Strike Elite Strongarm Blaster on Amazon for $12.99

Buy a 30-pack of N-Strike Elite darts on Amazon for $6.96

The best Nerf gun for the zombie apocalypse

Why you'll love it: Okay, we admit it — The Nerf Zombie Strike Brainsaw Blaster probably won’t actually save you when the zombie apocalypse hits, but you’re sure going to look a lot cooler wielding this chainsaw-inspired Blaster.

This cool-and-crazy Nerf Blaster has a foam “blade” that spins while it shoots darts. Just give the cord a tug to start the chainsaw action — no batteries required.

The barrel holds eight darts, which fire one at a time. This isn’t the most accurate or long-range Nerf Blaster available, but it’s definitely unique, and hugely appealing to the younger crowd.

Amazon reviewer Anthony sums up the sentiments of many, writing, “If you are in the market for a nerf gun with a chainsaw on the end, look no further. Seriously, this thing is fun and the spinning blade is awesome. It's really soft and spongy so nobody will get decapitated.”

While the Nerf Zombie Strike Brainsaw Blaster mostly has positive reviews — an average of 4.4 stars — some buyers did complain that the chainsaw pull string broke after a few uses.

The Brainsaw Blaster comes with eight green-and-black Zombie Strike darts, although you can also reload with the N-Strike Elite darts.

Pros: Unique look makes this Blaster very appealing

Cons: Some complaints of the pull string and trigger breaking within a few uses

Buy the Nerf Zombie Strike Brainsaw Blaster on Amazon for $26.49

Buy a 30-pack of Zombie Strike darts on Amazon for $5.39

The best Nerf gun for serious firepower

Why you'll love it: If you want to intimidate your opponents with some serious firepower, it’s hard to beat the Nerf N-Strike Mega Mega Mastodon, which shoots 24 darts up to 100 feet.

The first motorized Nerf Blaster, the Nerf N-Strike Mega Mega Mastodon uses battery power to rotate the enormous 24-dart drum. That means you’ll have to come up with six D batteries, but that’s a small price to pay for so much coolness.

This Blaster is big. It includes a shoulder strap to make carrying it easier and more comfortable, but it’s still a fairly heavy gun, so most suited to teens and older players. The rotating barrel holds up to 24 Mega Whistler darts — these oversize foam “bullets” emit a whistling scream as they hurtle through the air, adding greatly to the overall effect — that blast out at rapid-fire speed.

Happy buyers comment over and over about the sheer size of the gun, and how much fun it is to fire. Some do warn that the Mega darts sting a little bit more than the smaller Elite darts at close range, so consider yourself forewarned. Also, while the Nerf N-Strike Mega Mega Mastodon has good range, it’s not very accurate, although that isn’t much of an issue when you’re blasting foam darts left and right.

The blaster includes 24 Mega darts — Note that these are only compatible with the Mega series of Blasters.

Pros: Huge size provides huge fun, good range

Cons: Requires batteries, somewhat heavy, a few buyers complained of jams or problems with the barrel

Buy the Nerf N-Strike Mega Mega Mastodon on Amazon for $79.99

Buy a 20-pack of Mega darts on Amazon for $11.80

A company that's taking on Victoria's Secret with $35 bras just opened its first store. Here's what it's like to shop there.

Lively

  • Lively is a lingerie, swimwear, and fragrance startup launched by Victoria's Secret alum Michelle Cordeiro Grant in 2016.
  • The retailer sells more than 50 different types of bras, including bralettes, t-shirt bras, push-up bras, and plunge bras. Each one costs $35.
  • On Wednesday, it opened its first store in New York.

Lively is making its first foray into brick-and-mortar retail. On Wednesday, the online bra company, which also sells swimwear and fragrances, opened a permanent location in New York City.

"This is a first," founder and CEO Michelle Cordeiro Grant told Business Insider during an interview at the new location in Nolita.

Cordeiro Grant has been testing the waters with brick-and-mortar retail over the past few months. What started as a happy hour in the company's offices where customers could come and try on products evolved into pop-ups in Dallas and Nashville and, now, a permanent location.

"People were so hungry when we did something in real life. Every time it came to close the store, people were in tears. Whether it was our team or the local community, we had all fallen in love and this thing was shutting down," she said.

The company is taking advantage of the so-called retail apocalypse's store closings and lower rents to open locations in prime areas. Cordeiro Grant said that Lively saved 30% on its rent in the new space because of this. She added that the expansion into stores was a natural progression for the business.

"I always knew it was going to be an omnichannel ecosystem. I knew we had to start with digital first and work out how we needed to tell our story," she said.

Its new brick-and-mortar presence makes it more of a threat to Victoria's Secret, which has struggled in recent years. Cordeiro Grant, a former exec of the legacy lingerie chain, confirmed that fans can expect to see more stores opening soon — Dallas and Los Angeles are likely to come next, she said.

We visited the New York store in the run-up to its opening on Wednesday, July 25. Take a look:

SEE ALSO: A former Victoria's Secret exec has a new $35 bra company — and it wants to avoid one of retail's deadliest mistakes

The new store is located close to New York's busy Soho shopping area.

From the outside, it looks trendy and uncluttered.

The Lively brand was built on social media. New products are created based on feedback from its Instagram and Facebook followers, which Cordeiro Grant refers to as her "community."

Part of the company's negotiation with the landlords was based on this community and the events it will offer.

"It wasn't about typical metrics at all," she said. "It was about that fact that we are going to make this block what you want it to be."

Although it is 2,700 square feet in size, only a small part of the space is kept for the actual products.

Its minimalist and roomy store layout leaves space for events.

"We purposefully call it our Lively experience store," Cordeiro Grant explained.

Authorities in California shut down parts of Yosemite National Park on Wednesday as wildfires spread across the region.

As of Tuesday evening, firefighters contained 25% of the Ferguson Fire, which has ravaged the Yosemite area for nearly two weeks. One firefighter was killed in the blaze July 14, and six others have been injured. More than 3,300 firefighters are working to contain the fire.

It's the first time that the Yosemite Valley section of the park has been closed due to a fire in almost 30 years, according to USA Today.
