10 abandoned underwater sites and the history behind them

rummu prison estonia

If abandoned places already have an eerie vibe to them, echoing with the people and stories that no longer occupy them, then underwater abandoned places are especially mysterious. Buried beneath the waters of oceans and lakes, these haunts are usually unnervingly well-preserved.

Plus, floating through an old building to explore its past beats walking through one any day.

Here are 10 abandoned cities, buildings, and landmarks that are buried underwater.

Shi Cheng — Qiandao Lake, China

The "Lion City" sits around 130 feet under water, and is sometimes referred to as
"China's Atlantis of the East."

The over 1,340-year-old city named for Wu Shi Mountain has been underwater since the construction of the Xin'an River Hydropower Station in 1959— 300,000 people had to be relocated. The water has helped protect it from environmental erosion, leaving its 265 arches, five city gates, and ornamental carvings, which date back to the Ming and Qing dynasties, almost perfectly preserved.

Vilarinho das Furnas — Portugal

The 300 people who lived in the small village of Vilarinho das Furnas, a town whose history goes back 2,000 years, had to move due to the construction of a dam in 1967 that flooded the area. When the water levels drop in the summertime, parts of doors and windows can still be seen.

Nymphas Show Bar — Eilat, Israel

Marine biologist Gil Koplovitz discovered an abandoned underwater strip club off the coast of Eilat, Israel. Koplovitz told The Huffington Post in 2013 that the club used to be accessible via a 230-foot bridge and a flight of stairs that allowed visitors to enter the building without touching the water. The poles in the empty bar area are still standing. Why it was abandoned remains a mystery.

22 shocking celebrity weddings no one saw coming

$

Dax Shepard Kristen Bell

While some celebrity couples enjoy sharing details about their relationship and personal life (like Chrissy Teigen and John Legend), others prefer to share less information with the public.

Some couples are so secretive that they opt for private wedding ceremonies to prevent information slipping out. We're not sure how celebrity couples manage to withhold such information when they're frequently being watched, but somehow, they pull it off.

From Amy Schumer and Chris Fisher to Rachel Weisz and Daniel Craig, here are the couples that secretly tied the knot.

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have solidified their place as one of Hollywood's favorite couples. Although they love to publicly troll each other, the couple was tight-lipped about their wedding ceremony, which took place in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, in September 2012

The couple met on the set of "Green Lantern" and speculation that they were dating in real life happened in 2011. Considering that Lively and Reynolds never even revealed that they were engaged, news of their wedding was a huge shocker.

Martha Stewart Weddings shared photos from the event, but only one photo gives away details of the Marchesa dress that Lively wore. The couple still hasn't posted wedding photos, but maybe someday they will.

Kate Winslet and Ned Rocknroll

Kate Winslet tied the knot three times, but her marriage to Ned Rocknroll was so top secret that according to reports, her parents didn't even know about it.

Winslett and Rocknroll met in 2011 and got married in early December 2012 — but fans weren't even aware that they were engaged. Their wedding was confirmed in late December 2012, and the couple tied the knot "in a private ceremony attended by her two children and a very few friends."

"No one really knows what has happened in my life,"Winslet said during an interview. "No one really knows why my first marriage didn't last; no one knows why my second didn't. And I'm proud of those silences."

Amy Schumer and Chris Fisher

Days after Amy Schumer made her relationship Instagram official with Chris Fisher, news of their secret wedding was revealed. Schumer is known for being outspoken and candid, but somehow she managed to keep her Malibu wedding ceremony under wraps.

The couple got married on February 2018, joined by less than 100 friends. Stars like Jennifer Lawrence, Jake Gyllenhaal, Larry David, and Jennifer Aniston were also in attendance at the beach wedding.

Following the wedding, Schumer shared plenty of photos. She also said that married life "feels f------ good."

Here are the 10 most American cars on sale today

Louisville Ford

  • Cars.com released their annual list of 10 most American-made cars for 2018.
  • Ford and Honda cars earned the most slots in the ranking, but Chevrolet, Acura, and Jeep also make an appearance.
  • Auto plants in Ohio, Kentucky, and Illinois were responsible for the production of these cars.
  • The website compiled its list based on five factors: assembly location, amount of domestic-made parts, US factory employment, engine sourcing, and transmission sourcing.

With President Donald Trump's threat to increase auto tariffs in the news lately, many Americans are paying attention to where and how cars are made. Just because a car is made in an American factory, that doesn't necessarily mean all the parts that have gone into the car were domestically manufactured. In fact, many car parts for US-produced cars are imported, a process that complicates the goals of the Trump administration's tariff policy.

In June, Cars.com released its annual American-Made Index: a ranking of the 10 most American cars for 2018. The list features iconic domestic brands like Ford and Chevrolet, but Japan's Honda Motor Company also has cars featured in four of the 10 spots.

That's because of the way Cars.com defines American-made — the site's list takes into account which cars are manufactured in America, which cars use the most American parts and materials, and which cars support the greatest number of American jobs. The final ranking is based on five factors: assembly location, domestic-parts content, US factory employment, engine sourcing, and transmission sourcing.

After analyzing more than 100 US-built vehicles, here are the top 10 most American-made cars, according to Cars.com. Here's a closer look at the vehicles, as well as the factories and workers who make them.

  • There have been 23 school shootings in 2018 alone, according to CNN.
  • These shootings have affected the design of school supplies.
  • Several companies are introducing Kevlar protected items, including bulletproof backpacks, calenders, tech covers, and whiteboards.

In the wake of the 23 school shootings that have occurred in 2018 thus far, back-to-school season can be worrisome for parents, students, and teachers.

Some companies, however, are taking steps to make schools, pupils, and parents feel safer by creating bulletproof, Kevlar-padded school supplies.

While these discreet items often look like ordinary school supplies, they are built to act as a shield against multiple types of ammunition, including 357 Magnum, 44 Magnum, 9mm, and .45 caliber hollow point bullets.

Below are 10 items that are gaining traction heading into the 2018 to 2019 school year.

9 photos of the USS Wolverine, a strange WWII aircraft carrier that was originally a luxury paddlewheel steamer

USS Wolverine

The USS Wolverine is one of the oddest aircraft carriers in US Navy history.

Built in 1912, the Wolverine was originally a side-wheel steamer called the SS Seeandbee that was used for luxury cruises on the Great Lakes. But it got a second career when it was bought by the US Navy in 1942 as the service rapidly stood up a carrier force to answer Japanese aggression.

By January 1943, the Wolverine had been converted into an aircraft carrier to train naval aviators and flight deck crews for World War II.

It was based in Navy Pier in Chicago so that it could operate in Lake Michigan, but it lacked many features that combat carriers have, such as elevators and hangar decks.

Check it out below:

SEE ALSO: We toured the USS Gerald R. Ford, the world's largest aircraft carrier, which can house 75 aircraft (but doesn't have urinals)

This is the SS Seeandbee in 1912, decades before the US purchased it in March 1942.

The president of the company that owned the SS Seeandbee, Thomas J. McGuire, reportedly even overcharged the US by $500,000 for the ship. He was later fined only $5,000 for the fraudulent price.

To convert the ship into a carrier, the US stripped off the large wooden superstructure and exhausts.

And built a flight deck in its place.

Facebook happy employees

Most of us spend a majority of our waking hours at work, so it's only natural that we want to enjoy our time in the office as much as we can. And perks help with that — a lot.

According to career site Glassdoor, more than half (57%) of all workers say perks and benefits are among the top things they consider when deciding whether to accept a job, and almost 80% of employees say they would prefer new benefits over a pay raise.

That's why some employers are raising the bar and going beyond standard vacation days, health insurance benefits, and 401k matching to attract top talent.

Companies like Airbnb and Google offer unique and surprising perks like travel stipends and death benefits, Glassdoor reports, while Facebook and Netflix have upped the ante for companies wanting to support new parents.

"Benefits and perks matter because they're an added piece of the total compensation puzzle," Scott Dobroski, Glassdoor's career trends analyst, told Business Insider. "Job seekers should understand what benefits and perks an employer may be offering, and do their research ahead of time to find companies that offer benefits that matter most to them."

Employees rated some of their favorite employee benefits on Glassdoor. The following perks are not only unique, but they also received a rating of at least 4.0 out of 5.0 on Glassdoor.

6 things your eye doctor wishes you would stop doing

$
0
0

Eye doctorTaking care of your eyes is important, but it’s unfortunately pretty easy to let that fall by the wayside or not be quite as high on your list of priorities. And even if you think that you’re doing everything that you should be, generally, there are still probably some things that you’re doing that your eye doctor wishes that you wouldn’t.

Here’s what eye doctors wish people would stop doing so that they can protect their eyes from all kinds of daily stressors.

1. Stop staring at screens all day.

Nowadays, it seems like everyone spends all day (and night) staring at screens. From laptops and desktop computers to tablets, TVs, e-readers, phones, and more, your eyes very rarely get a break. As it turns out (and you may already know), this can have some serious implications when it comes to your vision and the health of your eyes.

"Eye health as it relates to screens is something that is not necessarily at the forefront of our minds,"Dr. Preeya K. Gupta, MD, a board-certified ophthalmologist and corneal specialist at Duke University Eye Center, told INSIDER. "So if I had one wish, it would be to get people to screen more responsibly."

Gupta said that that doesn’t mean that you need to give up all of your screens entirely (which would be pretty difficult for most people), but just that you need to think about ways in which you can help protect your eyes while keeping screens a part of your life.

Gupta advised that you look 20 feet away for 20 seconds after every 20 minutes you spend looking at a screen.

Additionally, make sure you take time to blink so that you avoid drying out your eyes.

"When we are staring at screens we don’t blink as often, in fact, our blink rate can decrease by 50%," Gupta said. "The tear film is vital to protecting the surface of the eye from stress—when we don’t blink we don’t allow that protective tear film to coat the eye fully allowing the eye to become dry."

Keeping the light on your screen lower than other lights in the room can also help you keep your eyes healthier, she added.

2. Don’t forget to schedule your regular eye exams.

If you don’t think that you have anything that needs addressing with your eyes, you might not always prioritize regular eye exams, but you can still benefit from them.

"Eye exams can detect conditions that can lead to blindness, many of which are preventable if caught and treated early,"Dr. Ming Wang, MD, PhD, an ophthalmologist at Wang Vision 3D Cataract & LASIK Center, told INSIDER. "Many conditions, if not caught and treated, can lead to irreversible vision loss. These include glaucoma, retinal tears, retinal tumors, uveitis, and others. The risk of not having an eye exam is too high. Also, the eyes should be dilated for these eye exams. Photography is an effective tool, but does not replace the need for dilation, which is currently the only method to fully detect all eye conditions."

3. Don’t ignore the effects that smoking can have on your eyes.

You might not realize that smoking — even smoking hookah — can have real effects on the health of your eyes. "Hookah smoking, like any type of smoking, causes both reduced amounts of oxygen to be absorbed in the bloodstream as well as constriction of blood vessels throughout the body,"Dr. Alan Mendelsohn, MD, FACS, a Miami-based ophthalmologist, told INSIDER.

"In patients with longstanding diabetes, the blood vessels in the eye are already damaged and are preventing blood from perfusing the retina. Smoking hookah only further reduces the amount of blood and oxygen that can get to the eye, hastening severe damage that can permanently impact a patient’s quality of vision."

Though you likely knew that smoking can cause health problems, you might not have previously considered the impact that it can have on your eyes.

10 airport security mistakes you're making that could cause you to miss your flight

$

Airport security.

You have your boarding pass, you finally found your headphones at the bottom of your bag, and you’re ready to head through airport security on your way to somewhere awesome.

When you reach security, however, you find you forgot to remove your five-ounce shampoo bottle. Mistakes like this can add unnecessary time to your airport security process.

Here are a few airport security mistakes that could cause you to miss your flight.

You're not properly packing your liquids.

Not to mention your aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes. Basically, any liquid-like substance needs to be in a container of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less if you’re taking it through security in your carry-on.

The key word here is “container.” If you throw a six-ounce bottle of lotion in your hand luggage, you won’t be able to bring it through security even if it only has one ounce of lotion inside. Sorting out all your incorrectly bottled liquids could cost you valuable time.

You're not keeping an eye on your boarding pass or passport.

Though airports don’t publicize the fact, things get stolen from security screen stations fairly regularly. The Guardian's reporting of a case of a missing MacBook Air made headlines, namely due to the apparent lack of response from the airport to the theft.

If you’re used to slinging your passport, identification, and boarding pass into a plastic tray and shuffling along through the x-ray machine, you might want to revise your security strategy. If your essential documents are picked up by the wrong passenger, you could end up dealing with a stolen identity along with a missed flight.

You're not bringing a travel consent form when flying solo with small children.

Due to an increase in child abduction cases involving parental custody conflicts and human trafficking, many airports and immigration officers are now asking for aconsent form from anyone traveling with a small child.

Anyone from a member of airline staff to a security agent at security can ask for this proof that you’re not illegally transporting a child across borders. Even parents who are married and share custody of a child should carry copies of the notarized consent form if they plan on flying with the child without their partner.

12 abandoned water parks around the world and the stories behind them

prudhomme's landing abandoned water park

Water parks offer a fun way to cool off on a summer day, but some have seen better days. From Lake Dolores Waterpark in Newberry Springs, California, to Aquaria Park in Ravenna, Italy, many have simply been abandoned.

Keep scrolling to learn about 12 abandoned water parks around the world — and the stories behind them.

Lake Dolores Waterpark in Newberry Springs, California, United States

Lake Dolores Waterpark, located off of Interstate 15 in the Mojave Desert, was constructed in the early 1960s by a local businessman for his family, and named after his wife. Rides and other attractions were added over the years. By the early 1970s, the site had become a popular water park for the general public. However, attendance tapered off by the late 1980s, and the park closed.

It reopened in 1998 as a 1950s-themed water park called Rock-A-Hoola . The retro-inspired Renaissance was unfortunately short-lived — an after-hours accident that allegedly made an employee a paraplegic was just one factor in Rock-A-Hoola's downfall. The park had its last hurrah between 2002 and 2004 under the name Discovery Waterpark.

The park's legacy lives on since its empty, graffitied pools have made it a desirable (read: edgy) location for filmmakers. A 2012 skate film called "Kilian Martin: Altered Route" was shot there, and, in 2015, it was the setting for a Mini Cooper car commercial.

Hoy Thuy Tien in Hue, Vietnam

Hoy Thuy Tien is one of the world's most famous abandoned water parks. In fact, backpackers making their way through Vietnam have popularized it as a tourist destination in its own right.

The park, which reportedly cost $3 million to build, opened in 2004 before construction was complete — only to close a few years later.

For an up-close look at Hoy Thuy Tien, check out Nathan Peauril's haunting images of its desolate attractions.

Ebenezer Floppen Slopper's Wonderful Water Slides in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois, United States

When Ebenezer Floppen Slopper's Wonderful Water Slides opened in the early 1980s, the park provided a thrilling alternative to front-lawn sprinklers for kids in the Chicago suburb of Oakbrook Terrace.

Closing by 1989 for unknown reasons, this former landfill returned to its garbage-strewn roots.

7 tips for attending a wedding if your ex will also be there

$

New Girl Wedding ex

If you find out that you and your ex might be going to the same wedding, there's no reason to panic.

Unless you had that most amicable of breakups, it’s probably going to be rough but here are some ways to make it easier on yourself, the happy couple getting married — and everyone around you.

Find out ahead of time if your ex will be RSVP'ing yes.

First things first: Get your facts in order before you go off the deep end worrying about what-if scenarios. Is your ex really going — or did you just happen to find out that both of you were invited?

How you find out the truth will depend largely on your specific situation, according to Primer Magazine — if you have a reasonably good relationship with your ex, you might be able to ask them directly.

It will be awkward — but remember, your ex is also a person with feelings, and like you, they probably also care about the couple who are getting married. Hopefully, your shared desire for a good wedding for that couple will make it easier for both you and your ex to help things go smoothly.

If you’re not on speaking terms with your ex, try to find out from mutual friends or family if they’re going — if they’re not, you can sit back and relax.

Allow yourself to think about specific scenarios.

A lot of stuff may go through your mind surrounding this wedding — the exact specifics will depend on how close you are to the couple getting married. Adding an ex to the mix just makes things more complicated, so it’s good to give yourself time and space to think about it.

"You might have some difficult emotions to work through — especially if your split is recent," Colorado-based counselor Jan Scott-Frazier told INSIDER.

Dress and prep appropriately — and in ways that make you feel good about yourself.

While basic wedding etiquette means you should never try to upstage the couple getting married — it’s also extremely tempting to want to look as good as possible if you know you’re going to see your ex.

You should definitely dress and take care of yourself in ways that make you feel and look your best — but don’t let it get to the point that you’re actually stressing yourself out instead, said Primer Magazine.

Again, presumably both you and your ex are there because you both care about the couple getting married — and this won’t do them or you any favors.

bernese mountain dog illustration

Whether or not you're a dog lover, you've probably noticed that each breed has its own personality and quirks.

Through her playful illustrations, Grace Gogarty, who goes by the name Little Tunny on Instagram and Tumblr, explores the distinct characters that comprise the canine kingdom — from socially anxious Bernese mountain dogs to attention-grabbing golden retrievers.

Keep reading to see examples of Gogarty's hilarious cartoons and learn more about her creative process.

A self-taught artist, Gogarty began drawing seriously when she was 9 years old.

As with many budding artists, her first foray into illustration was through Microsoft Paint.

"My illustration style arose organically, taking art I loved apart and rebuilding it," Gogarty told INSIDER.

"I really spent a lot of time trying to draw realistically and studying life before I realized I'd rather just break the rules on purpose," said Gogarty, who has been drawing for 16 years.

Gogarty describes her style as intentionally unpolished.

"I think things that are 'wrong' and unpolished are a bit more interesting, personable, and fun," she said.  "I’m a messy person and I try to reflect that in my cartoons."

10 surprising things you didn't know about 'The Amazing Race'

amazing race emmys"The Amazing Race" is an unscripted reality show where hand-picked teams race around the world to win $1 million by doing various mental, physical, and cultural challenges. Fans enjoy the show for its fast-paced energy, global voyeurism, and competitive nature.

The global competition series has had a small degree of fluctuating viewership over the years but has remained relevant in pop culture. The last season produced 7.7 million average viewers, the highest ratings boost "The Amazing Race" has received in five years, according to TV by the numbers.

Before the show returns in the fall, read on to discover eight interesting behind-the-scenes details you may not know about "The Amazing Race."

There are 14 international versions of the show.

There are 14 franchises that have branched out from the American original, with 74 winning teams in all. These international editions include "The Amazing Race Philippines,""The Amazing Race Ecuador," and "The Amazing Race Australia vs New Zealand."

Team members can’t go farther than 20 feet from each other.

Although contestants are allowed privacy sometimes, like when going to the bathroom, they are generally never allowed to go more than 20 feet away from their partner while racing, according to Tarflies Times. This is to prevent team members from getting separated but also helps their camera person get as many shots as possible of them standing in the same frame.

The teams have to buy plane tickets for their crew members.

In an AMA Reddit thread host, Phil Keoghan explained that teams are responsible for buying tickets not just for themselves, but for their two-person camera crew as well. The show does not intercede to get tickets on contestants’ behalf, so if a flight is fully booked they really are stuck until enough seats are available on another plane.

imran khan past present

Imran Khan, the man who will become Pakistan's next prime minister, has had a colorful past.

Before entering politics in the mid-1990s, Khan was an Oxford scholar, world-renowned cricketer, and a playboy with a reputation on London's party scene.

His first two marriages were to a British socialite and a BBC weather presenter, who has since accused him of cheating and taking hard drugs. His third wife is a woman whose face he had never seen until after the wedding.

Khan's party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, won more seats than its opponents in the country's general election. It will need a coalition to form a government.

Scroll down to learn more about Imran Khan, the cricketer-turned-politician.

This is Imran Khan, the 65-year-old leader of Pakistan's Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) political party. The party, whose name means "Movement for Justice" in Urdu, won more seats than other parties in the Pakistani parliament, which would effectively make Khan the next Prime Minister.

PTI officially won the general election, but will need to form a coalition for its government, the Associated Press reported.

He grew up in Lahore, Pakistan, before going to Oxford University. There he enrolled in the prestigious Philosophy, Politics, and Economics course, which was studies by other world leaders like Britain's David Cameron, Australia's Tony Abbott, Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi, and Pakistan's Benazir Bhutto.

However, Khan was known less for his academics than his sportsmanship. He made his debut for Pakistan's national cricket team in 1971, aged 18.

I spent 3 years writing about yachts, and owning one takes way more money than you think

$

eclipse superyacht

  • A yacht costs a lot more than the price its owner bought it for.
  • There are additional expenses, like yacht crew, dockage, fuel, and maintenance, that many people don't think about.
  • Even many yacht crew wouldn't own a superyacht if they could afford it because they're so much money and work.

If there's one thing I took away from spending three years writing for the yachting industry and attending the Monaco Yacht Show, it's that buying a superyacht is the absolute pinnacle of indulgence for the 1%.

You see, these behemoths of the sea cost a lot more than the price tag they come with thanks to the upkeep they require — it's a series of neverending expenses. There's what I like to call the Big Four that will easily wear down an owner's black AmEx: yacht crew, dockage, fuel, and maintenance, among a host of other eye-popping costs.

Just ask the crew who work on yachts.

I once spent a day running up and down the docks at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show asking crew one question: Would you buy a boat if you were rich? The answer, overwhelmingly, was no. Those that said yes were new to the industry — my guess is that they just didn't know better yet.

Because, really, yachts are just floating money.

Here's how much it really costs to own a superyacht, which is generally defined as a boat at least 80 feet in length.

SEE ALSO: What a $1 million vacation looks like in Mykonos, Greece, where you'll fly in on a private jet, sleep in an ocean-view villa, and cruise the seas in a yacht

DON'T MISS: The world's most expensive superyachts come with helipads, movie theaters, and swimming pools — take a look

Generally, yachts over 100 feet cost $1 million per 3.3 feet — and that's not counting costs for upkeep.

Source: Forbes

Some older yacht models around 80 feet may sell for six figures, but a superyacht will most likely set you back by at least a few million. An 84-foot yacht can cost $1.74 million, while a 295-foot yacht can cost $45 million.

Source:Fraser Yachts, Burgess

But that's just the beginning — owners can expect to spend about 10% of the purchase price annually on operating and maintaining a yacht. That's $1 million a year for a $10 million superyacht, although it varies.

joe jonas Vampire Weekend’s The title of  "celebrity" can mean several different things, from famous actor to comedian to model and everything in between. But regardless of a difference in profession, celebrities tend to have one mutual career thread: starring in music videos – and it’s actually more common than you think.

Whether it’s world-famous actors giving some star power to small bands or famous couples of olde lip-syncing their hearts out, keep scrolling for a detailed list of celebrities who have starred in music videos.

Jamie Bell and Evan Rachel Wood were in a Green Day video.

Jamie Bell ("Billy Elliot") and current "Westworld" star Evan Rachel Wood played a doomed couple separated by war in Green Day’s somber 2004 single"Wake Me Up When September Ends."

Ashley Graham danced with Joe Jonas.

DNCE frontman Joe Jonas got pretty steamy with supermodel Ashley Graham in the adorable (and kinda hot) video for "Toothbrush," where they were a super in love couple taking their relationship to the next level.

Danny Devito pretended to direct 1D.

At first glance, One Direction and legendary actor Danny DeVito have nothing in common … except they both starred together in "Steal My Girl," where DeVito played the weirdly specific director of the video.

I travel all the time, and these are the 10 things I never get on a plane without

Airplane landing sunrise morning early flight

I've been living in New York City for the last five years, and over that time I've gotten used to frequent traveling. My family still lives in the Midwest and until recently my dearest friends lived in other states, so at least once a month I could be seen filing onto a bus, train, or plane to another destination.

And as with all things, practice makes (closer to) perfect.

Because of this, I've become much more discerning about what I travel with, in part because my job involves testing products to see which ones are worthwhile.

Below are 10 things I love to travel with, be it for their space, versatility, convenience, or reliability:

DON'T MISS: The 11 gadgets and tech accessories I used the most while traveling abroad

(Actually) wireless earbuds that save on space and add convenience.

I rarely travel with a checked bag anymore, so space is a top concern. For shorter trips where I don't want my Marshall over-ear headphones to take up prime real estate or get crushed, I bring along my Jaybird RUN truly wireless buds. They're tiny enough to keep in my pocket, and their charging case takes up less room than a pair of rolled socks. Plus, they've got an 8-hour playtime and on the off-chance I forgot to charge them beforehand, 5 minutes in their charging case gives me an hour of listening time.

Jaybird RUN True Wireless In-Ear Headphones, available at Best Buy, $179.92

A carry-on that holds an impossible amount of things and can function as a duffel or backpack.

Plain and simple, this is the best carry-on bag I've ever found. Ever since Cotopaxi sent me a test unit almost five months ago, I haven't gone on a single trip without it.

It fits a lot, while still meeting airline restrictions for a carry-on, and since Cotopaxi is technically an outdoors gear brand, the bag itself is reminiscent of that. The Allpa inherited innovation from that space, like a low-profile harness that helps evenly distribute the weight of the pack so it's comfortable to wear even when stuffed to the brim.

It also opens like a suitcase, so you don't have to waste time digging to the bottom of a traditional backpack.

There are many great selling points to the Allpa, but for a frequent traveler, it's the versatility, durability, comfort, and roomy design that are perhaps the best of the best.

Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack, available at Cotopaxi, $199.95

The most comfortable and supportive socks that you'll ever wear.

It might seem silly to have a favorite pair of travel socks, but to be fair they're my favorite pair of socks for anything. While traveling, though, you're likely on your feet for hours on end, and it's nice not to have to worry about soreness or blisters. The honeycomb support system on Bombas' socks took two years to design, and is just one upgrade that makes them the most comfortable pair you'll own.

  • Success isn't just about money, power, and fame. Personal fulfillment and making an impact count for something, too.
  • We collected a series of indicators that you're going to be more successful than you think. Those include being open to failure and making time every day to learn.
  • If even a few of these signs sound familiar to you, you're making good progress.

If you're pursuing your passions, if you're learning, and if you're forging solid relationships, you're probably on track to do great things — even if you aren't extraordinarily famous or wealthy.

Below, we've listed a series of signs — based on research and expert opinion — that you're doing better at this thing called life than you'd be inclined to believe.

You're always looking for a better way to do things

Are you stuck in the past — or hurtling toward the future?

On an episode of Business Insider's podcast, "Success! How I Did It," John Sculley, a former Apple CEO and president of Pepsi, said throughout his career he's always asked questions like, "Why is it done this way?" He said success is largely about to the willingness "to solve a problem in a way that's never been solved before."

The opposite trait — resistance to change — can stall your career, the same way it stalls big companies' progress. That's according to Scott Galloway, a clinical professor of marketing at New York University's Stern School of Business, the founder of the digital intelligence firm L2, and the author of the new book "The Four: The Hidden DNA of Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google."

In his book, Galloway writes: "Trying to resist this tide of change will drown you. Successful people in the digital age are those who go to work every day, not dreading the net change, but asking: 'What if we did it this way?'"

You have a vision for the kind of life you want

Granted, that vision may evolve over time. But the point is not to take a job exclusively for the short-term benefits — like compensation.

As Nathaniel Koloc, former ReWork CEO, told The Harvard Business Review, instead of asking yourself, "What job do I want?" you should be asking yourself, "What life do I want?" And how does this gig fit into the broader picture?

Even if you only have a vision for the year ahead, career coach and former Googler Jenny Blake recommends asking yourself questions like, "What does my ideal average day look like?" and "What kinds of people do I want to be connected with or meeting?"

You're using your 'signature strengths'

Your signature strengths are simply the skills you're uniquely good at.

As Eric Barker, author of "Barking Up the Wrong Tree," previously told Business Insider, research suggests that "the more often you use those skills, the more you're happier, you're respected, you feel good about your job." What's more, "if you're using those skills in your job, you're going to achieve more."

We compared Google News and Apple's built-in News app for the iPhone to see which one is better — and there's a clear winner

Google News vs Apple News 4x3

A few months back, I had a realization: I wasn't paying enough attention to current events.

Sure, I work in the news business. I watch the news scroll past on Twitter all day long, and there are TVs tuned to news channels in my newsroom. Sometimes, I can hear my colleagues literally reporting the news around me.

But that news overload didn't make me more informed, it just made me want to tune it all out. And at a time when there's a wild new headline almost every day, this is not the time to stop paying attention.

To solve this problem, I turned to technology. I needed to make the news both unavoidable and digestible, giving me the option to skim the headlines or dive deeper. That solution presented itself in the form of a widget on my iPhone that appears when I swipe right on my home screen.

I started with Apple's News widget, but then I switched to Google's when it redesigned Google News in May.

After using both Apple News and Google News the course of several months, I've noticed the strengths and weaknesses of both — along with a clear winner:

Since my gateway into both apps has been the iPhone widget, let's start there.

At a glance, these widgets look nearly identical, but there are a few key differences to note.

The first is the subtle design differences. Google News keeps it simple: it supplies you with just four of the top stories, and they're not categorized. There's a button on the bottom that says, "More Stories For You," which is the easiest way to get into the app itself.

Apple News, on the other hand, offers you more headlines and separates them by "Top Stories,""Trending," and "Top Videos." It's not clear what the difference is between top stories and trending stories, and unlike Google News, there's no easy way to get into the Apple News app without clicking on a story. I hated this about the app, since it meant one extra click to get inside.

But from a content standpoint, both app widgets left a little to be desired.

On Google News, the mix of stories it gave me wasn't very broad — two entertainment stories, one celebrity news story, and one tech story. Granted, this is where my interests lie, and Google probably knows this thanks to my desktop browsing habits using Google Chrome. Still, a little diversity would have been nice.

At first glance, Apple News seemed to offer a better mix of stories from more diverse sources. Except when you look a little closer, every single headline but one contains the word "Trump." I don't know if that's more on Apple's design, or the reality of our current politics, but it was a bit much.

Once inside, the Google News app is clean, simple, and personalized.

One thing I love about using the Google News app is the personalization at the top. It doesn't overdo it by giving me too much information — I don't need my calendar or email here, for instance — but having my name up top and the local weather report is a nice touch (if you click on that icon, a pop-up 10-day forecast will appear).

As you scroll down, you'll see the top five stories. Google says those stories have been organized for you and are a mix of the top headlines, local news in your area, and news from topics you've said you're interested in.

On Tuesday, my top five reflected that well. It included a story about trade, breaking news that Ivanka Trump had shut down her fashion brand, a story about a new restaurant trend in New York City, a tech news story about MacBooks, and an entertainment story about something that happened on late-night TV.

10 things Prince William reportedly isn't allowed to do

prince william and prince george

As the future king of England, life is pretty sweet for Prince William, Duke of Cambridge. He has a lovely wife, darling children, and gets to live in a swanky palace in London.

As a member of the royal family, however, William must abide by certain rules of etiquette and protocol that the public might not be aware of. Here are 10 things he reportedly can't do because of his royal position.

He reportedly can't show public displays of affection with his wife.

Public displays of affection, including holding hands, are generally a no-no for royals, including William and his wife Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.

Prince Harry, however, has been known to show PDA with his new wife Meghan Markle. This is because Harry, Duke of Sussex, isn’t as close in line to the throne and is allowed more leeway when it comes to PDA.

He can’t go all out on vacation.

The Queen runs a tight ship, and that includes setting a travel budget for the whole family, which means that William must plan within the bounds of the budget when going on holiday.

He needed his grandmother’s approval before proposing marriage.

Any royal descendant, including William, must get the approval of the Queen before proposing marriage, according to Brides. This was decreed by the Royal Marriages Act of 1772.
