38 mind-boggling optical illusions that have stumped the internet

Floor Optical Illusion

In the past two years, the internet has given us The Dress, a photo of a mysterious missing leg, and this disorienting floor design.

If you're still hungry for more, INSIDER rounded up a mix of classic optical illusions, baffling viral photos, and  mind-boggling designs that'll leave your head spinning and illustrate how our brains process and interpret color, peripheral vision, size, and more.

One quick note: We've included explanations for many of the images, so scroll down slowly if you don't want to spoil the illusion.

The amorphous shape at the bottom of this painting has confused people for centuries.

Titled "The Ambassadors," this painting was finished in 1533 by German artist Hans Holbein the Younger. It's currently on display at the National Museum in London, UK.

When you look at the painting head-on, you'll see what appears to be a large, deformed object at the bottom. But when viewed from a particular angle, the blob turns into a human skull before your eyes.

According to researcher Phillip Kent, this painting is one of the most famous examples of an anamorphosis — an irregularly shaped image that appears in its "true" form when viewed in an "unconventional" way — in art.

What color are the circles in this photo?

This colorful image went viral in mid-July after its creator, University of Texas professor, Dr. David Novick, shared it on Twitter.

Despite what you may see, it turns out all the circles are actually the same color. "The differences are subtle, though, and depend on the size of the image when it's viewed," Dr. Novick tweeted.

Dr. Novick's image, which he calls "Confetti," is an example of a classic optical illusion known as a Munker illusion. According to Danish professor Michael Bach, the Munker illusion reveals how much our perception of color is influenced by other surrounding colors.

At first glance, this photo seems to depict a man leaning over and embracing a woman who is sitting at her desk.

In May, a Twitter user named CJ Fentroy posted a picture of what appears to be two coworkers laughing and hugging. It also looks like the guy in the photo is rocking a light blue shirt, white skinny jeans, and black heels while the woman is wearing a plaid shirt in shades of magenta.

It's a cute but otherwise uneventful photo that you might just scroll past online if it weren't for Fentroy's caption. "At first, I thought he was wearing the heels," the Twitter user wrote.

9 red flags you can spot on a first date

0

date

When you are dating someone new, it can take a while for certain deal breakers — like an inability to help with chores or bad financial habits — to become apparent.

But some red flags can show up as soon as you meet someone. You just need to know what to look out for.

To help make sure you notice them sooner rather than later, INSIDER talked with Rori Sassoon, founder of Platinum Poire matchmaking service, to find out which red flags you can spot on a first date.

1. They're very late.

Issues with traffic or public transportation are inevitable for most people, so tardiness isn't always a red flag.

But if your date is more than a few minutes late — and doesn't seem to care that you've been waiting for a lengthy period of time — consider that a first strike.

"I am a little bit of a stickler for time," Sassoon told INSIDER. "I don't mean five minutes, but if someone is running 15 minutes late I definitely expect a call or a text. If someone doesn't do that, it's a red flag in the sense that there's a lack of respect for the other person's time."

2. They expect too much too soon.

"When you're on a first date with someone, and the conversation turns to sex really quickly, stay away," Sassoon told INSIDER.

There are obvious exceptions to this, like if you are there specifically to hook up and have communicated that with your date ahead of time.

But if your date immediately begins making lewd sexual remarks or getting more touchy-feely than you'd like during a casual outing, that's a sign they may not be respectful of your boundaries — both now and in the future.

To deal with this, let your date know you aren't comfortable discussing sex quite yet. If they don't back off, you are well within your rights to end the date early.

3. They're too pushy.

Your date may try to convince you that they deserve to be invited back to your place because they bought you a drink or spent some time with you.

"If they're insisting on inviting you to their place, or pushing to go over to yours, that's a bad sign," Sassoon told INSIDER. "They don't need to know where you live right now."

Toxic 'red tide' algae blooms are killing fish, turtles, and manatees in Florida — here's what it looks like and why it's happening

red tide dead fish

The waters on the southwest coast of Florida haven't been clear for 10 months.

A red tide that rolled in last fall is still plaguing the waters of the eastern Gulf of Mexico, turning the formerly pristine coastline a cloudy mud-red and killing off many kinds of wildlife.

The dangerous algae blooms are called karenia brevis, and they thrive in briny sea water that is warm but not too hot.

Ocean observers at Florida's Mote Marine lab say this year's red tide is not a record-breaker yet, but it is the most persistent algae bloom they've seen in roughly a decade.

Take a look at why it's happening and which creatures are dying because of the algae.

SEE ALSO: Dangerous 'forever chemicals' have been found in US drinking water at alarmingly high rates. Here's what to know about PFAS.

The sea algae that creates red tides, Karenia brevis, floats around in the Gulf of Mexico all the time. But with some additional nutrients, a sprinkle of wind, and ocean currents that flow just the right way, the algae can develop into larger toxic, oxygen-suffocating blooms.

The phenomenon is called red tide because it turns the normally crystal-clear waters near the shore into murky dark red cesspools that kill aquatic life.

Red tides kill fish by producing a powerful brevetoxin that harms their central nervous system. "Ultimately, fish die because their gills stop functioning," the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission explains on its website.

"Signs of intoxication in fish include violent twisting and corkscrew swimming, defecation and regurgitation, pectoral fin paralysis, caudal fin curvature, loss of equilibrium and convulsions," the FWC reports.

In addition to suffocating fish, the algae confuses sea turtles and kills manatees that mistakenly eat contaminated sea grass. Birds that eat contaminated prey also suffer.

Manatees often die from eating contaminated sea grass — red tides killed more than 50 manatees around Florida last year, while more than 800 of the 1,000-pound beasts were killed by algae blooms in 2013. The preliminary count this year is up to at least 92.

Bird sickened by the algae become weak and unable to stand, get wary of flying, and can develop seizures and dehydration.

Here's where you should sit on your next flight, according to a flight attendant

Even if you aren’t afraid of flying, you can acknowledge that being on an airplane is never exactly comfortable. Airplane seats are notoriously small and cramped, the temperature is always either freezing cold or way too warm, you have very little control over the amount of noise and light that surrounds you, and you’re basically trapped in one area for hours at a time. Sitting in first class can make things better, but of course, that is not an option everyone can afford.

Luckily, there are some more affordable ways to get as comfortable as you can on an airplane, and they all revolve around picking the right seat.

The kind of seat you choose can have a huge impact on your comfort level during your flight, whether you’re looking for an area that is quieter or you simply want more legroom. If you don’t fly a lot, picking the right seat can seem overwhelming.

INSIDER spoke with Hawaiian Airlines flight attendant Kaipo Kauka to get a better idea of the best seat to choose depending on the experience you’re looking for.

If you want to sleep through most of the flight, choose a window seat.

Sleeping is ideal during a flight, especially a very long one. Unfortunately, it can also be tough to get a decent amount of it when you're constantly adjusting yourself and trying to find a comfortable position. Kauka recommends choosing a window seat if you know you need some shut-eye.

He said, "I like using the window as something to lean on. Your seat neighbor will thank you for not leaning on them instead."

Pick a window seat away from the kitchen area if you need silence.

Whether you want to get some uninterrupted sleep or just want a quiet flight, Kauka said to stay away from the "kitchen" area of the plane.

He pointed out, "Flight attendants work in the galleys during the flight and it can get noisy."

Choose an aisle seat if you know you'll be using the bathroom a lot.

Can't hold it in for very long? Do yourself - and your seatmates - a favor, and pick an aisle seat. And if you would prefer to keep an eye on the lines, Kauka said, "You can use the aircraft seat map if you want to book a seat close to a lavatory as well."

Everything we know about 'Riverdale' season 3

0

josie kevin riverdale season two

"Riverdale" has some new surprises in store for season three.

The hit CW drama left Archie's future up-in-the air after he was arrested for a murder he didn't commit, but season three promises a three-month time jump that will put his trial front and center at the beginning of the new season. And though the Black Hood was caught at the end of season two, he's not off the show for good.

With the new episodes comes new romances and the introduction of at least five characters, two of which will be Jughead's sister and mom.

While fans wait in anticipation for the October 10th premiere, here's what we know about season three so far.

There may be a wedding episode.

During a TV Critics Association panel in August, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said there may be a wedding episode that "involves a certain ex-mayor and a certain ex-sheriff." That means Josie's mom, Sierra McCoy, and Kevin's dad, Tom Keller, could be getting hitched after their affair was discovered on the second season.

Casey Cott (Kevin) and Ashleigh Murray (Josie) also told FanSided at San Diego Comic-Con that their families are moving in together.

Kevin and Moose are dating.

After finally kissing at the end of season two, Kevin and Moose are in a relationship. Casey Cott, who plays Kevin, told FanSided that it won't be simple, because Moose is still closeted.

"Kevin, romantically, has a boyfriend who's not quite out of the closet so that's confusing and dark in its own way," he said.

A flashback episode will feature the main teens playing their parents.

At the TV Critics Association panel in August, Aguirre-Sacasa said the fourth episode of the season will be a dark take on "The Breakfast Club." Titled "The Midnight Club," the main teens will play high school versions of their parents.

That results in KJ Apa as Fred Andrews (Luke Perry), Camila Mendes as Hermione Lodge (Marisol Nichols), Cole Sprouse as FP Jones (Skeet Ulrich), Lili Reinhart as Alice Cooper (Mädchen Amick), and Madelaine Petsch as Penelope Blossom (Nathalie Boltt).

The episode will reportedly reveal a secret the parents have all been hiding since their school years.

'This is how a whiny tyrant acts': Democrats and intel veterans slam Trump for revoking Brennan's security clearance

John Brennan CIA

  • Democratic politicians and national security experts were up in arms over the news that President Donald Trump was revoking the security clearance of former CIA Director John Brennan.
  • The highly unprecedented move was perceived by many to be a thinly-veiled attempt to intimidate a prominent critic of Trump.
  • Here is a sampling of some of the reactions from top Democrats, lawyers, and national security experts.

Wednesday's announcement that President Donald Trump was revoking the security clearance of former CIA director John Brennan caused an outpouring of shocked, confused, and dismayed reactions from Democratic members of congress, as well as several prominent national security and intelligence experts.

Citing "erratic conduct and behavior" as the reason for Brennan's clearance being revoked, the White House statement also accused Brennan, who has frequently criticized Trump since leaving the CIA in 2017, of using his clearance to "make a series of unfounded and outrageous allegations, wild outbursts on the internet and television, about this administration."

While making the announcement in the Wednesday afternoon press briefing, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the White House was also reviewing the statuses of security clearances for several other former national security officials for potential revocation. Those officials have also publicly criticized Trump.

Democratic politicians and national security experts immediately began expressing their confusion and disappointment for what they view as a politically motivated and even despotic use of political power to punish a dissenter.

Here are the reactions of some of the powerful people who spoke out:

SEE ALSO: Trump revokes former CIA director and frequent Trump critic John Brennan's security clearance

DON'T MISS: The White House waited 3 weeks to announce Trump was revoking Brennan's security clearance, and some are speculating it was to get people to stop talking about Omarosa and Manafort

Brennan first responded to the revocation of his clearance in a tweet, in which he referred to the action as "part of a broader effort to suppress freedom of speech & punish critics."

Brennan then discussed the matter further with MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace.

Democratic Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, Vice Chairman of the Senate intelligence committee, said the move sets "a dangerous precedent."

Democratic Sen. Mazie Hirono of Hawaii slammed Trump as "vindictive" and "petty".

Ex-Tesla employee Martin Tripp posted dozens of photos that he alleges came from inside of Tesla (TSLA)

Elon Musk

  • Tesla whistleblower Martin Tripp took to Twitter on Wednesday night, tweeting photos he alleges came from inside the company.
  • He told Business Insider he feels they are central to his ongoing legal battle with the company.
  • They include images he says are of battery scrap, trailers containing battery waste, and documentation of punctured battery parts in Model 3 vehicles. Tesla denies that any punctured battery parts made it into vehicles.
  • Tesla also told Business Insider that Tripp's claims are false and that he "does not even have personal knowledge about the safety claims that he is making."

"Are you ready," Martin Tripp tweeted on Wednesday evening, before sending out dozens of photos that he alleges came from inside of Tesla.

Tripp told Business Insider he feels the photos are central to the legal battle between he, a former process technician at the company's Nevada Gigafactory, and the electric carmaker. He claims they support allegations that he has made about the safety and quality of Tesla's parts, specifically the batteries that go into all of Tesla's vehicles.

"I decided to send this info out because I have been humiliated by Tesla and Elon Musk," Tripp told Business Insider.

In June Tesla sued Tripp for alleging that he hacked the company and transferred secret information to third parties.

Earlier this month, Tripp filed a countersuit. He denies Tesla's claim that he's a hacker, and says the company intimidated and harassed him after he was fired.

"As we’ve said before, these claims are false and Mr. Tripp does not even have personal knowledge about the safety claims that he is making. No punctured cells have ever been used in any Model 3 vehicles in any way, and all VINs that have been identified have safe batteries. Notably, there have been zero battery safety issues in any Model 3," Tesla said in a statement to Business Insider.

Tripp tweeted screenshots of dozens of Tesla VIN numbers. He claims that these cars contain damaged battery modules, and he further claimed an errant robot puncturing cells and affecting battery modules. He told Business Insider that this was related to a robot that malfunctioned in February. Tesla previously confirmed to Business Insider that an incident with a malfunctioning robot occurred in February, but said it had affected fewer parts than Tripp claimed and denied that any batteries were then reworked and put into cars as Tripp claims.

He then tweeted screenshots of Tesla's "containment," alleging that one of the damaged batteries made it into a Model 3.

In Tripp's suit, he alleges that Tesla kept battery waste in trailers on the Gigafactory property. He tweeted out photos of what he claims are in these trailers, as well.

The makers of 'Grand Theft Auto' have a huge new game coming this October, and it looks outrageous

Red Dead Redemption 2

A massive new open-world game from the folks behind "Grand Theft Auto" is on the horizon

It's named "Red Dead Redemption 2," and it's an incredible-looking prequel to 2010 blockbuster "Red Dead Redemption."

Unlike the satirical "GTA" games set in modern times, "Red Dead Redemption 2" is a gritty tale of American outlaws facing modernization at the turn of the 20th century.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Rockstar Games isn't known for pumping out games. You may recall that the latest "GTA" game came out in 2013 — that's the most recent release from Rockstar Games.

Thus, the upcoming launch of "Red Dead Redemption 2" is a Pretty Big Deal. You might even call it the most-anticipated game of 2018 — it's scheduled to launch for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on October 26.

So, what's all the fuss all about? Isn't it basically "Grand Theft Horse"? Let's dive in.

SEE ALSO: We probably won’t see the next major ‘Grand Theft Auto’ game until at least 2020, after the new PlayStation and Xbox consoles launch — here’s why

Like the "GTA" series, "Red Dead Redemption 2" is a third-person action game set in a vast, open-world environment.

In a way, "Red Dead Redemption 2" is a sequel to "GTA V"— it's the latest iteration of the same third-person action games Rockstar has been making for years.

But in reality, "Red Dead Redemption 2" is a direct prequel — narratively-speaking — to 2010's "Red Dead Redemption."

14 quick and easy ways to reduce bloating

0

Mean Girls dress doesn't fit bloating

If you've ever planned a big night out just to later feel like your stomach was way too full or your pants were fitting too tight, you know just how awful bloating can be.

Bloating occurs when your gastrointestinal tract is filled with excess air and gas, and that can happen due to the foods you eat, how quickly you eat or drink and a plethora of other everyday practices you probably don't think about.

So, to help you avoid canceling your plans and laying on the couch with your pants unbuckled, here are 14 easy ways to help you reduce your chances of bloating.

Stretch it out.

A great way to begin your debloating journey is to do your best to loosen up and stretch it out. If you know some yoga poses, break them out.

Rebecca Weible, yoga instructor and founder and owner of Yo Yoga! in New York City, told SELF that when your hips are tight, your pelvis then presses up against your digestive organs. Weible told the magazine that stretching helps "open things up a bit" and increases circulation to the torso and "the organs that are working to digest."

To relieve the pressure on your pelvic region, you should do stretches that both open up your hips and twist your abdominal area, according to Active.

Fill up your water bottle.

If you're bloated, you probably find yourself thinking that there isn't any room left in your stomach for food or liquids. But, drinking water might be just what you need to cleanse your system, flush out gas and flatten your stomach.

If you don't consume enough liquids, your body will retain water to avoid dehydration. Drinking water can do wonders for reducing water retention in your body and helping to prevent constipation, according to Shape.

Go for a walk.

If you're feeling gassy and bloated, the last thing you probably want to do is a workout. But, a little physical activity can go a long way toward stretching out your abdominal area, allowing your bowels to move more regularly and sweating out any excess water in your body.

Even a light walk around the block can give your digestive system the gentle nudge it needs to get back to operating properly, according to POPSUGAR.

The best sport sunscreen you can buy

0
0

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

best sport sunscreen

The Insider Pick:

  • A true sports sunscreen should be designed with the athlete in mind. The EltaMD UV Sport Sunscreen SPF 50 meets that requirement with a no-drip, water-and-sweat-resistant formula that’s safe for all skin types and can easily be applied on wet or dry skin.

If you’re taking your workout outside, protection from the sun is a must. While workout gear like UPF clothing, sunglasses, and hats can all provide some protection from the sun, your best defense is a good quality sunscreen that’s formulated to withstand even the most intense workouts.

You may think of sunscreen as a seasonally specific essential, but that shouldn’t be the case. While those harmful rays can be especially intense during the summer months, they can still cause damage on cold or cloudy days. Whatever your activity of choice is, you shouldn’t be stepping outdoors without that layer of protection.

To find a good sunscreen that will withstand the rigors of your workout and provide protection there are a few important things to take into consideration:

Sun Protection Factor (SPF) rating

SPF stands for “sun protection factor” and helps protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UVB rays that burn your skin and lead to premature skin wrinkling and aging. Leaving your skin vulnerable to these UVB rays can also lead to the development of skin cancer. It may be easy to think the chances of that are low, but according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70. Taking protective measures like applying a sunscreen with the correct SPF for your skin type is a must — and can literally save your life.

To help you decide which SPF is best, consider how sensitive your skin is, and how long it takes you to burn in the sun. If you’re like me and can burn in a matter of minutes, a higher SPF will be best. A quick trick to determine your perfect number is to take the time it would take you to burn without sun protection and multiply that by the SPF. So, if you burn in 10 minutes, but apply a sunscreen of SPF 15, you’ll be protected for up to 150 minutes.

For the best protection, most experts recommend using a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. It’s also best to look for one that provides “broad spectrum” protection, which will protect you from both UVB rays and UVA rays — the latter of which can penetrate the skin more deeply and are associated with premature aging.

Water resistance is key for sport sunscreen

Since you’ll be using this sunscreen while working out, it’s safe to say you’ll be breaking a sweat. The last thing you want to do is sweat off all that sun protection, or have it run and cause your eyes to start stinging right in the middle of that intense move or final push as you wrap up your workout. The same applies if you’re planning on going for a swim. You don’t want that protection washing off the moment you hit the water. Water resistance is a must in a good sports sunscreen, otherwise you’ll be wasting your time with applying it in the first place.

Check the ingredients

It’s important to realize that your skin will absorb anything that’s applied to it. Since you’re applying sunscreen directly to your skin, you’ll want to pay attention to what’s in the formula. Sunscreens typically come in two forms: mineral, also known as physical sunscreen, and chemical sunscreen.

Physical sunscreens reflect damaging rays away from the skin, tend to last longer, and cause less irritation. Chemical sunscreens absorb radiation before it reaches the skin, but some can contain potentially harmful ingredients. Chemical sunscreens can also harm aquatic life, according to studies, so if you're near or in the water, you should check out our guide to the best eco-friendly mineral sunscreens that are reef safe.

We’ve taken all the above into consideration, done the research, and read the reviews to come up with the best sports sunscreens that will keep you protected from the sun even while your busting out a sweat. You’re already doing something good for your body by making the choice to be active — so why not go the extra step to protect your skin while doing so?

Here are the best sports sunscreens you can buy:

Read on in the slides below to check out our top picks.

The best sport sunscreen overall

Why you'll love it: The EltaMD UV Sport Sunscreen SPF 50 has a no-drip, water resistant formula that’s suitable for all skin types, making it perfect for active people.

It can be difficult to find a sunscreen that doesn’t feel heavy or oily after applying, which can make you feel like you’re sheathed in an additional layer of clothing. If you have especially sensitive skin, oily formulas can also cause irritation, leaving you feeling more miserable than protected.

The EltaMD UV Sport offers a solution to both problems, with an oil-free formula that goes on feeling light, absorbs quickly, and is appropriate for all skin types — even those with especially sensitive or dry skin.

This is a broad-spectrum sunscreen that will provide protection from both harmful UVB and UVA rays, with an SPF of 50 to ensure the highest level of protection from the sun possible. No sunscreen can provide 100% protection from the sun, but when applied properly, the EltaMD UV Sport comes very close.

It’s also water resistant for up to 80 minutes, with a no-drip formula that will keep it from running into your eyes while working out. The fragrance and oil-free formula also makes it suitable for those with especially sensitive skin. It’s noncomedogenic, meaning it won’t block pores, making it ideal for use on the face as well as the rest of the body.

If you’re concerned about harmful ingredients, the formula is also paraben free, so you won’t find any of the harmful preservatives that are often contained in cosmetic and personal care products lurking about here.

As indicated by the “MD” in the name of the sunscreen, EltaMD is a company that has specialized in skincare products used and recommended by physicians for more than 25 years. EltaMD UV Sport has been specifically designed for those with active lifestyles, and it shows in the way it performs. The Skin Cancer Foundation also recommends it as an effective broad spectrum sunscreen.

While all these facts are promising on their own, the positive customer reviews reveal that this sunscreen lives up to all it promises. It has received 4.5 out of 5 stars on Amazon, with reviewers of all skin types praising its effectiveness. Those with dark skin love that it doesn’t leave a white residue behind after application, and those with sensitive skin found that it was one of the only sunscreens they were able to use that didn’t cause any irritation.

As with most high-quality products, you get what you pay for. The EltaMD UV Sport sunscreen is on the more expensive side, but most reviewers found that “a little goes a long way” and the results are worth the price.

Amazon reviewer Kim says, “the EltaMD was worth the extra cost. It goes on smoothly, no odor, no stickiness, no sunburn. It’s the only sunscreen that doesn’t make my face break out.”

Pros: Oil-free formula goes on lightly and absorbs quickly, paraben free, broad spectrum protection, water and sweat resistant up to 80 minutes, sensitive skin friendly, fragrance free

Cons: On the expensive side

The best sport sunscreen for your face

Why you'll love it: The La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid SPF 60 is water-resistant and it has a higher SPF rating to make it strong enough to withstand intense workouts.

Personally, I can’t stand putting anything on my face that makes me feel like I’m wearing a mask. This is especially tricky when it comes to sunscreen, which tends to feel heavier than most lotions and beauty products. However, your face is especially vulnerable to the sun’s harmful rays, and is the most susceptible to the premature aging that can occur if you aren’t properly applying sunscreen.

With the La-Roche Posay Anthelios Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid, you won’t have to make the decision between feeling like you’re wearing a mask or protecting your face from the sun. It’s a mouthful to say, but the name says it all: This sunscreen will go on feeling light, and absorb quickly, making you feel as though you’re wearing nothing at all.

The light formula designed specifically for your face makes it the ideal sunscreen for daily use. It can be worn alone or under make-up, and it absorbs quickly for fast application. However, this face sunscreen goes an additional step further, providing water resistant protection for up to 80 minutes, also making it ideal for swimming and working out. It won’t run into your eyes or cause any stinging.

The fragrance and oil-free formula won’t clog pores, and is also ideal for those with sensitive skin. The Cell-OX Shield XL Technology it’s formulated with may sound like something out of a science fiction novel, but what it really means is that your skin will be protected from free radicals caused by UV rays, and it’s enhanced to deliver broad spectrum protection. It’s paraben free, though it is a chemical sunscreen with Oxybenzone and Avobenzone in it (two chemicals that are proven to harm aquatic creatures and be potentially bad for humans, too).

Allure Beauty praises the lightweight formula that “feels like primer” and the magazine's digital editor was impressed by how quickly the formula dries. However, if you intend to use this daily and are prone to drier skin, she recommends mixing it with your favorite moisturizer for the best results.

If you are planning on saving this specifically for the days when you’ll be working out, you can easily put this sunscreen on by itself—no other products needed—so you can be out the door and getting that heart rate up in no time. For the best results, it’s recommended to apply La-Roche Posay Anthelios 15 minutes before sun exposure, and reapply every two hours after swimming or sweating.

This sunscreen is on the more expensive side. Reviewers say it may be pricey, but “it’s amazing.” Reviewer Kelly D. echoes this sentiment saying, “It makes my skin velvety soft and works great as a makeup primer. As someone who wears sunscreen every single day, I can’t recommend this enough. A little goes a long way and justifies the higher price.”

This face sunscreen isn’t just for women, either. Men have also used it and love the results. Reviewer ShawnTheShow says, “I’m an Irishman. In other words, of the fairer skin type. I didn’t have the slightest redness after being in the sun in the Bahamas. Spend the money, save your skin.”

Pros: Super lightweight and fast drying formula, SPF 60 with broad spectrum protection, water resistant for up to 80 minutes, can be used daily, oil-free and unscented formula makes it suitable for sensitive skin

Cons: Some may not find it hydrating enough for daily use, on the expensive side

The best sport sunscreen to protect your lips

Why you'll love it: The Fresh Sugar Sport Treatment Sunscreen SPF 30 will prevent your lips from getting sunburned or chapped, and the water-resistant formula will prevent it from rubbing off.

When applying sunscreen, it can be easy to forget the areas that need it most — like your lips. You may wonder if it’s even worth applying sunscreen here, but your lips are just as vulnerable to the sun as every other part of your face.

The Fresh Sugar Sport Treatment sunscreen provides the protection you need, and is formulated without parabens, sulfates, and phthalates. Since we ultimately end up ingesting any chap stick, lipstick, or lip gloss that’s applied to our lips (gross but true) a formula with non-toxic, natural ingredients is a must.

This formula is also safe to apply to the area around your eyes or on the rest of your face thanks to the easy to use application stick. In addition to providing protection from UV rays with an SPF rating of 30, the Fresh Sugar Sport Treatment Sunscreen also contains hydrating avocado oil and black currant seed oil to naturally moisturize and soften your lips.

It’s also specifically designed for active lifestyles, with a water-resistant formula that will keep you protected throughout your workout. There’s no need to worry about licking it off, or having it rub off when you go to take a swig of water to stay hydrated during your chosen activity.

For best results, it’s advised to reapply every two hours, or as needed. This is another sunscreen that you can work into your daily routine, or choose to use only when working out — making it more versatile than some. It goes on clear so it can be applied on its own or under makeup.

It does have a light citrus scent, which may not be for everyone, but most reviewers found it refreshing and like the fact that it doesn’t have a “sunscreen” smell to it.

The Fresh Sugar Sport Treatment sunscreen has received a 4 out of 5-star rating on Sephora.com. Reviewers love that “it stays on well even when sweating!” and that it “leaves behind no chalky residue like other sunscreen sticks.”

Pros: SPF 30 protection, water-resistant formula, easy application, travel sized container, goes on clear, suitable for daily wear, natural ingredients

Cons: The citrus scent may not be for everyone, not considered a broad-spectrum sunscreen

  • Office Depot just opened a coworking space called the Workonomy Hub in Los Gatos, California.
  • The space is located inside an Office Depot store and offers services like DIY copying, printing, packing, shipping, and tech support.
  • It's part of a larger Workonomy concept from Office Depot that is meant to help small businesses. The initiative includes tech-support kiosks that the company says will be in 141 Office Depot stores by the end of the month as well as self-service printing and copying kiosks that it says will be in more than 1,000 stores in the same period.
  • Staples also has a coworking space, but Staples charges a monthly fee of $130, whereas Office Depot's space charges from $40 for daily use to $750 a month for a private office.

Office Depot is no longer just an office-supply store — now, one of its stores functions as an office, too.

Office Depot just launched its first coworking space in its Los Gatos, California, retail location. The coworking space, known as the Workonomy Hub, is the newest part of Office Depot's Workonomy platform, a larger initiative aimed at small businesses. The initiative includes tech-support kiosks that the company says will be in 141 Office Depot stores by the end of the month and self-service printing and copying kiosks that it says will be in more than 1,000 stores in the same period.

"We are relentlessly committed to helping small- to medium-sized businesses succeed with a consistent and tailored customer experience through Workonomy," Office Depot CEO Gerry Smith said in a press release

Office Depot is a few years behind competitor Staples when it comes to coworking — Staples partnered with the workspace startup Workbar in 2016 to offer coworking spaces at three of its Massachusetts locations. The spaces are very similar, but Staples' space requires a $130-a-month membership to access, while Office Depot's charges from $40 for daily use to $750 a month for private office.

It makes sense that Office Depot and Staples would want to get into the coworking business. WeWork, the leader in coworking, is said to be raising additional equity funding at a $35 billion valuation.

MEET THE WALTONS: How America's wealthiest family spends its Walmart fortune (WMT)

Wal-Mart family Jim Walton, Alice Walton and Rob Walton

  • The Waltons are the richest family in America.
  • Sam Walton founded Walmart in 1962. It is now the world's largest retailer by revenue with annual sales of $500 billion from its nearly 12,000 stores worldwide.
  • Walton's descendants have a combined wealth of $163.2 billion, according to Bloomberg. This is more than Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, and Warren Buffett, and nearly $70 billion more than the second-richest family in the United States, the Kochs.
  • In public, the Waltons live a pretty modest life despite their wealth. Here's how they spend their fortune.

Walmart shares surged more than 10% on Thursday on news of its strong quarterly earnings report, giving the company's founding family an $11.6 billion boost in net worth, Bloomberg reported

According to Bloomberg's Billionaires Index, the Walmart heirs now have a combined wealth of $163.2 billion, which is more than Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, and Warren Buffett. In fact, they are worth more than $70 billion more than the second-richest family in the United States, the Kochs.

The three children of Walmart founder Sam Walton co-own Walton Enterprises, which is the biggest shareholder of the company and the reason behind their wealth. Walmart is the world's largest retailer by revenue with annual sales of $500 billion from its nearly 12,000 stores around the world.

Only one of the siblings, Rob Walton, sits on the board of the company. James Walton, his brother, served on the board until 2016, before being replaced by his son Steuart in 2016.

Alice Walton, the youngest sibling, has never taken an active role running the business and has instead become a patron of the arts.

When the company has a good quarter, the family makes millions of dollars in dividends. However, despite their fortune, the Waltons seem to live a pretty modest life, at least in public.

Here's what we do know about how the wealthy family spends its fortune:

9 recent school controversies that got people talking

The Hate U Give

Many schools offer debate classes for students to practice presenting compelling arguments and responding to rebuttals. But schools often find themselves at the center of political and social debates.

From banned books to dress code violations, here are nine controversial issues that got parents, administrators, and students talking.

A school assignment asked students to list "positive aspects" of slavery.

An eighth grade American history teacher at Great Hearts Monte Vista in San Antonio, Texas, assigned a worksheet entitled "The Life of Slaves: A Balanced View" in which students were asked to list both "positive aspects" and "negative aspects" of slavery.

A parent posted a photo of the assignment on Facebook, and other parents and community members began sharing it. It caught the attention of Texas Congressman Joaquin Castro, who called it "absolutely unacceptable" on Twitter.

The school issued an apology in a statement on Facebook.

"To be clear, there is no debate about slavery. It is immoral and a crime against humanity," the statement reads. "It was a clear mistake and we sincerely apologize for the insensitive nature of this offense."

However, current and former students argued that the lesson was being misconstrued.

"I had to do this assignment once, but before he handed us this EXACT assignment we had a good discussion of how in the end there was really no 'pro' side to slavery,"a former student wrote on Instagram. "Mr. Thomas never put any student to fight in the position of the 'pro' side of slavery. THE POINT OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO SHOW WHY PEOPLE ALLOWED FOR SLAVERY TO GO ON FOR SO LONG, NOT TO APPROVE OF SLAVERY."

Tensions were high as Omaha's school district considered updating their sex education curriculum.

CBS News reported yelling and pushing at school board meetings as Omaha, Nebraska's, school district considered updating its sex education curriculum in 2016 for the first time since 1986. The updated comprehensive curriculum contains information about sexual orientation, birth control, and emergency contraception.

Per CBS News, Nebraskans for Founders' Values, a conservative Christian organization, called it "pornography under the guise of education."Footage of a woman named Deanna Rabuck went viral as she told the board, "I have five daughters! Five daughters! Who's going to keep them pure? I am! Not OPS!"

Others expressed support for the updates.

"I have a right to this information," Ryleigh Welsh, a sophomore at Omaha's Central High School, told CBS. "Sexual health is more than just sex. It's about understanding and taking care of your body and being prepared for a healthy future."

A Texas school banned the bestselling young adult novel "The Hate U Give," garnering criticism from the author.

Katy Independent School District superintendent Lance Hindt removed all copies of "The Hate U Give," a book inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, from the district's school libraries after a complaint about the book's drug use and explicit language, according to Vulture.

The author of the book, Angie Thomas, expressed her feelings about the ban on Twitter.

"I'm saddened to hear that a school district in Texas banned #TheHateUGive, but I'm also empowered — you're basically telling the kids of the Garden Heights of the world that their stories shouldn't be told," she wrote. "Well, I'm going to tell them even louder. Thanks for igniting the fire."

The upgraded Tu-22M3M focuses on modernizing the avionics, communications, and controls on the Cold War era bomberBut the Tu-22M3M's integration with some of Russia's deadlier missiles, and role as a nuclear-capable maritime strike jet pose a serious challenge.

The new superonic strike bomber can not only carry nuclear weapons, but it also can fire formidable anti-ship weapons and even an air-launched ballistic missile.

It also can carry the KH-32, Russia's latest anti-ship missile that was specifically designed to take out US carrier strike groups.

The 25 most generous philanthropists in America today

  • The Chronicle of Philanthropy publishes an annual list of the top 50 philanthropists (both individuals and couples) by calculating their yearly donations.
  • In 2017, America's wealthiest residents donated $14.7 billion to nonprofit organizations.
  • About 60% of the total was donated by people who made their fortunes in tech, suggesting America's philanthropic center is shifting away from Wall Street and towards Silicon Valley, according to The Chronicle.

America's wealthiest people donated $14.7 billion in 2017 to causes, alma maters, foundations, and charities — more than doubling the amount given away in 2016, reported Forbes

For 18 years, The Chronicle of Philanthropy has published an annual round up of the top-50 philanthropists in America by calculating their yearly donations. In 2017, the individuals and couples on the list donated a median of $97 million, doubling the giving amount from the first list published in 2000. The total donation amount of the 2017 list is the highest amount since the 2008 recession, according to Forbes.

The 2017 list features 11 individuals or couples from the technology industry accounting for $8.7 billion in donations, or about 60% of the total, suggesting America's philanthropic center is shifting away from Wall Street and towards Silicon Valley, according to The Chronicle.

The top three donors who gave away at least $1 billion each are tech moguls: Michael and Susan Dell, Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, and Bill and Melinda Gates

Notably missing from the list is billionaire investor Warren Buffett, who made a multibillion-dollar donation in Berkshire Hathaway stock to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2017. But because the "annual installment" was part of Buffett's initial 2006 pledge to donate more than $36 billion in Berkshire Hathaway shares to the Gates' organization, the Chronicle did not count it as a 2017 donation.

Below are the top 25 philanthropists who donated more than $97 million each in 2017. Note that four people passed away after the ranking was first published in February — Porter Byrum, David Rockefeller, Florence Irving, and Henry Hillman.

The best romantic comedy set in every state

0
0

Love Simon official trailer movieLet’s be honest, everyone could use a good rom-com every now and again. But, with so many love stories set New York City and Los Angeles, it begs the question: What’s left for the rest of the US?

Fear not, for most of the 50 states have some pretty darn cute rom-coms to their names because love is in the fictional air all the way from Alabama to Wyoming.

We formulated this list using IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes scores as well as our own opinions. Just a note that we stretched the definition rom-com just a little to mean any comedy with romance involved to make sure all states were included.

Alabama has one of the best rom-coms of all time.

"Sweet Home Alabama" is a rom-com about a NYC socialite forced to return to her hometown in Alabama in an attempt to get her divorce finalized. With a hard-hitting cast, including Reese Witherspoon, Patrick Dempsey, and Josh Lucas, you’ll want to rewatch this heartwarming film over and over again.

Don’t underestimate Alaska when it comes to love.

Alaska will always hold a spot in our hearts as the setting of Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock’s rom-com "The Proposal." Palpable on-screen chemistry and well-times entrances by Betty White throughout the movie make this an instant rom-com classic.

Arizona’s best rom-com has a 72% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Admittedly, rom-coms aren’t usually known for their award-winning screenplays; in fact, most make a killing off clichés and cheesy one-liners. But, the Arizona-set movie "Murphy’s Romance" featuring Sally Field and James Garner miraculously breaks this mold. The 1985 movie even earned a whopping 72% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is pretty impressive.

I've interviewed millionaires all over the world, and building wealth has a lot less to do with money than you think

money millionaire

  • Money isn't the only thing millionaires focus on to get and stay rich.
  • Author Steve Siebold has interviewed more than 1,200 of the world's wealthiest people over the last 34 years and wrote two books revealing how they achieved success.
  • Siebold says there are 10 things rich people put their energy into that help them find their success — including learning, courage, and results.

When most people talk about acquiring wealth, money is usually the main focus of the conversation. How can I save more money? How can I spend less money? How can I better manage the money I have? While all of these things are certainly important points for consideration, the truth is that becoming rich has a lot less to do with money than most people realize.

I've interviewed millionaires all over the world, and what you might be surprised to know is that most of them aren't as money focused as you would expect. Sure, it's important and they think about it, but when it comes to the success they've had, they talk more about things like mindset, attitude, vision, belief, self-growth, confidence and continued learning. The bottom line: getting rich is not all about money.

More specifically, here are 10 things self-made millionaires focus their energy on that makes them successful:

SEE ALSO: 6 signs you're richer than you think, according to a wealth adviser for millionaires

They are visionary

You need to be able to see the future long before it arrives. In other words, you have to know what you want, why you want it and what you're willing to do to get it. Don't just take each day as it comes. Instead, have a plan. Being visionary keeps you focused on where you're going and eliminates procrastination in performance and hesitation in decision-making.

They compartmentalize their emotions

Your ability to control your emotions when it counts will play a major role in your success. Strong feelings of anger, jealously, exuberance, despair and others have the power to interfere with your ability to think clearly and make good decisions. They key to control is placing your emotions in psychological compartments, which means blocking them out temporarily so you can focus on the core of what’s being said or done so you can respond appropriately.

They simplify everything

Life is complex. People are complex. The world is complex. Your job is to simplify everything you can and focus on what's important. Decide what you want, concentrate on it to the exclusion of (almost) everything else, and embrace the challenge of attaining it. If you looked at a car engine as a whole it may seem complicated. Break it up one part at a time and it's simple. The point is everything can be broken down to its root cause, and that makes every problem easier to solve.

9 easy tips for eating keto while on vacation

0
0

A woman on vacation. When you’re following a high-fat, low-carb ketogenic diet, taking a vacation can actually be stressful. A lack of familiar dining options coupled with the food temptations of a new place can send your diet into a tailspin.

Whether you’ve flown to a far-flung destination with delicacies you don’t even recognize or you’re just having trouble resisting the dessert buffet at your resort, here are a few tips to help you be keto on vacation without sacrificing a minute of fun.

Do your research and plan ahead.

If you want to make being keto on vacation as easy as possible, you should definitely do a bit of pre-trip research.

Check the online menu of your hotel’s restaurant for keto-appropriate options before you check in. Select a few eateries around town that offer keto foods and suggest them to your group. Find out if there’s a farmer’s market nearby where you can pick up local kept-friendly specialties on a budget.

If you’re traveling abroad, research the local cuisine so that you have a rough idea which regional delicacies fit into your eating plan. Browse online forums to find out what brands and foods keto dieters in your destination country recommend. You can even call ahead if you know where you're going, suggested Ketoevenglist

"If you know where you’re going far enough in advance, you can contact your resort or vacation destination and explain your dietary needs with an employee," they wrote. "The vast majority of destinations, including ours, are opening up their menus to try and make them more friendly to those with food allergies and special dietary needs. While keto/low carb aren’t always on those special menus, the fact that they have special menus at all shows that vacation spots recognize that there are a lot of different dietary needs and are willing to help people who can’t or won’t eat the standard fare."

With a bit of planning, you can make your diet work on vacation.

Eat well before your trip.

There’s no quicker way to sabotage your good diet intentions than to arrive hungry and cranky at your destination. Or worse: the airport.

Diet Doctor recommends that if you plan on sticking to a keto diet while on vacation, you should start off on the right foot.

"Fill up on your low-carb favorites before you leave. Home is the easiest place to eat right. Don’t rush – start your journey nourished and satisfied."

Opt for accommodation that offers a kitchen.

It’s so much easier to be in control of your diet when you know exactly what’s going in your food. Having the option to prepare your own meals gives you peace of mind and could even cut down on your food expenditure.

"Once you have a kitchen, you have control over what you purchase and what you eat," Addison Johnson wrote on Dietingwell. "An added benefit of this style of travel, other than the fact that you can stick to your keto diet effectively, is that you get to experience the local side of life. Going to grocery stores, choosing from local ingredients, and cooking for yourself will help make you feel like you’re a part of the culture, instead of only a visitor."

If you’re able to stay somewhere with access to a stove, fridge, and prep space, your diet will thank you.
