According to the NRDC, America doesn't end up eating about 40% of its food. That's a lot when looked at as a hard number, but probably comes as less of a shock after the fourth week in a row that you've thrown out soggy, black lettuce from the back of the refrigerator.

The good-ish news is that because we waste about 50% more food today than we did in 1970, it should be relatively easy to cut back on it (especially with the innovations of the last 45+ years) if we just devote a bit more effort to it. Or, if we just bought smarter products that do some of the magical life-lengthening preservation for us.

In turn, we'll save resources, refrigerator space, and more money for other things we enjoy.

It could be as simple as a weekly "use it up" dinner, where you try to concoct a delicious Instant Pot meal of your leftovers from the week, or as low-maintenance as getting an inexpensive device to suck up the ethylene gas (which causes ripening) in your fruit and veggie drawer. It all depends on your lifestyle, budget, and what you find yourself most often wasting.

Below are 18 kitchen tools and tricks to cut down on food waste:

A little apple that absorbs the gas that speeds up ripening

Bluapple One-Year Combo Pack, $16.79

Bluapples prolong freshness and storage life by absorbing ethylene gas, which is the harmless, odorless, and colorless gas that typically accelerates the ripening process of fruits and vegetables.

A colorful vegetable saver that extends shelf life and contains odors

The Hutzler Onion Saver extends the shelf life of a cut onion and contains onion odors. You can get it in the shape of various fruits and vegetables so it's always easy to distinguish between them in the fridge.

Eco-friendly, reusable food wrap

Wrap up perishables (cheese, fruit, vegetables, bread), cover a bowl, or pack a snack with this eco-friendly, reusable wrap. The natural antibacterial properties of beeswax and jojoba oil help keep food fresh and allow it to be used again and again.

Wal Mart Top Rated Toys 2018 27

  • Walmart has unveiled its top toys of 2018 list, where it enlisted kids and "toy influencers" to predict the toys every kid will want this holiday.
  • This year Walmart's list has 40 toys, on categories like collectibles, toys delivered from entertainment properties, big brands, and innovation.
  • Walmart's VP of toys, Anne Marie Kehoe, said that Walmart is greatly expanding its toy assortment  with "more than we’ve ever carried before."

Walmart is already kicking off the holiday shopping season — this year, with a bang.

The retailer has announced it will be expanding its assortment of toys before the holiday season kicks off with "more toys than we've ever carried before," Walmart VP of toys Anne Marie Kehoe said in a press conference announcing the plans.

Walmart will be expanding its selection by 40% online, and 30% of the toys it's stocking in stores will be brand new. The store will also be expanding its toy selection in stores with more toys and more aisles to stock them.

This year, Walmart will have 1,000 toys exclusive to the retailer, with 300 that are brand new and never-before-seen.

As usual, the company did its research to find out the top toys for the holiday before the busiest retail season rolls around again. The company brought in hundreds of kids to test and play with dozens of toys so the store could see what resonated the most as their favorites. Walmart also enlisted the help of some "toy influencers" to help it decide what to put on its list.

Based on that, Walmart selected the top 40 toys it thinks every kid will covet this year. That's up from the selection of 25 toys in previous years.

"We're proud of having kids help us select these toys. They’re the ones that make it happen and show us the way," Kehoe said.

This year, many of the changes Walmart is making to its toy section, which it is calling America’s Best Toy Shop, are permanent and will last even after the holiday season is over.

Waymo could be worth as much $175 billion — here's a brief history of the Google Car project (GOOGL)

waymo google self-driving car

  • Waymo, formerly the Google Car project, is almost 10 years old.
  • After more than eight million self-driving miles, Waymo is preparing to commercialize in 2018 and 2019.
  • Morgan Stanley has pegged Waymo's value at $175 billion.

Waymo is almost a decade old. What started as secretive Google X lab undertaking is now on the verge of being a commercial business, planning to launch in limited markets this year and expand in 2019.

Since 2009, Waymo has amassed over eight million self-driving miles, using a variety of platforms. Along the way, a who's who of autonomous pioneers has worked on the project: Sebastian Thrun, Chris Umson, Anthony Levandowski. Spunoff from Alphabet, Google's parent company, in 2016, Waymo is now run by John Krafcik, a seasoned auto-industry executive.

Morgan Stanley recently pegged Waymo's potential value at a stunning $175 billion (the $50 billion-$75 billion range was what many analysts had previously suggested). That was due largely to Krafcik's ambitious go-to-market objectives, which include not just an autonomous ride-hailing service of the type currently being piloted in Phoenix, AZ, but also a logistics/delivery arm and a technology licensing structure.

Having followed the Google Car project and later Waymo with a mix of enthusiasm and skepticism over the years, I've been captivated of late by how quickly Krafcik and his team have turned the grand experiment into a major business effort. A big question since around 2015 has been "What's Waymo really going to do with all those millions of miles driven?"

Now we know.

At this point, it's worth it to take a look back on how Waymo evolved. It's the story of an absolute commitment to a future technology — Alphabet always wanted Waymo to get it right and was willing to patiently nurture and invest on a surprisingly long timeline.

We visited the 'McDonald's of the Philippines,' which serves spaghetti and fried chicken alongside its burgers — here's what it's like

Jollibee 11

  • Jollibee is an iconic Filipino fast-food chain that serves spaghetti, fried chicken, and more.
  • While the chain dominates in the Philippines, it is also growing in the United States, where it has more than 30 locations.
  • We visited a Jollibee's in Queens, New York, and walked away convinced that it is a chain with the potential to compete with American fast-food greats.

A Filipino fast-food behemoth is gearing up to take over the United States.

It seems there's a Jollibee on every corner in the Philippines — in fact, it's one of the few chains that has successfully maintained market dominance over McDonald's in its home country. Even as McDonald's ramps up its Asian expansion, Jollibee has held its own with nearly double the number of locations than McDonald's has in the country.

Now, Jollibee is coming for McDonald's on its home turf. The chain has more than 30 locations in the US and has a majority stake in American burger chain Smashburger. The company said it plans to open hundreds of new Jollibee stores around the world in 2018, aiming to finish out the year with roughly 4,200 stores worldwide, up from 3,797 at the end of 2017.

On Friday, Jollibee announced that it was planning a $12.4 million investment in chef Rick Bayless' Tortas Frontera fast-casual chain, Restaurant Business reported. Jollibee will have a 47% stake in the chain.

Jollibee holds a special place in the heart of many Filipino expats. Jian DeLeon wrote in First We Feast that the chain offered such people "a nostalgic taste of home at a price most of us can swallow."

We, on the other hand, enter not as Filipino food experts but as two fast-food-loving New Yorkers eager to see how the growing chain compares to the competition:

SEE ALSO: We visited beloved American fast-food icon Sonic for the first time. Here's the verdict.

DON'T MISS: Here's what it's like to eat at the Southern fried-chicken chain whose diehard fans say is better than KFC and Popeyes

Jollibee has more than 30 locations across the US, mostly in California. Luckily, there's one in Woodside, Queens, right off the subway.

The place was packed when we arrived at about 1 p.m. The lunch rush was in full swing, and scouting for a seat proved to be quite the task. Fortunately, an employee alerted us as soon as two spots became available.

Ordering was a breeze, though we were a bit thrown by the menu's breadth of options. While we are fast-food connoisseurs, we don't typically see spaghetti served alongside fried chicken and burgers at American chains. The cashier was extremely friendly and accommodating, even when we came back twice to order more items we previously forgot.

Senegal is building a $2 billion futuristic city to help cut down on overcrowding in Dakar — check out its abstract design

$

Diamniadio Senegal

Senegalese leaders have long dreamed of building a new urban center amid mounting congestion and overcrowding in the capital city of Dakar. With a population that exceeds three million, the city plays host to skyrocketing housing costs and visibly high levels of unemployment. On any given day, locals encounter gridlocked roads, cramped minibuses, and large groups of unemployed workers lingering on street corners.

A new development promises to alleviate some of this pressure. After securing approval in 2013, developers are set to finish construction of Diamniadio, a $2 billion futuristic city less than 20 miles outside Dakar, by 2035. At the end of last year, the minister in charge of the project, Cheikh Kanté, said it was around 80% complete.

When finished, Diamniadio will span 4,000 acres and feature an industrial park, state ministries entertainment facilities, and a university for around 30,000 students. The project will also provide a mix of luxury, middle-class, and affordable housing for around 350,000 residents.

In addition to reducing congestion, the development is part of a national strategy to promote economic growth. Although Senegal's economy is growing at around 6% annually, its public debt has risen to nearly 61% of its GDP.

Critics of the project worry that the $2 billion price tag will sink the country even further into debt. They're also skeptical of its motivation, with many drawing connections between the project's timing and the reelection campaign of current president Macky Sall. Others fear that the development will be unaffordable for most Senegalese residents.

Despite these concerns, the city is a masterpiece in urban planning. One of its principal projects, the Diamniadio Lake City (DLC), combines contemporary, abstract architecture with an homage to the nation's rich history and culture. Check out the design below.

DLC's design was inspired by the Senegalese culture and landscape.

Its sharp curves and sloping lines mimic the amorphous patterns of algae in a nearby lake, as well as the silhouettes of traditional female sculptures.

To stay connected to the natural landscape, each structure is made with copper — an element found in the earth's crust.

Other materials used during construction include glass, steel, and concrete panels, which coalesce to form a shimmering mosaic of buildings.

Senegal's most famous tree, the baobab, was a key source of inspiration for the project.

Although they can live for 2,500 years, baobabs have been victims of climate change and rising global temperatures. DLC works to combat these forces by installing green roofs and implementing renewable energy technology. It's also one of the first LEED certified projects in the country.

The NFL's highest-paid players for the 2018 season

$

Aaron Rodgers

Because of the way NFL contracts are structured, there is no easy way to define "highest-paid players."

Is the player with the highest salary? Well, most top players get a huge chunk of their money in signing bonuses. Is it the highest average annual salary? Well, that considers the entire deal, and most players never see the end of their contracts. Is it who will be paid the most money this year? That would be biased towards players who signed new contracts this year because so much money is in the signing bonus.

Because of this, we have broken up the players by the highest-paid in different categories. Depending on which criteria you use, the answer to "highest-paid" can be entirely different.

You can click through to each category here or scroll down to see all. Data via Spotrac and other sources.

4. Aaron Donald, Los Angeles Rams — $40.9 million

Disappointing photos show the real, messy, unglamorous lives behind perfect Instagram shots

Parenting bloggers 1

Instagram rarely depicts real life. We spend a long time carefully curating our feed, making sure we've added the right filter, or photoshopped out a skin imperfection, or piece of trash on the floor.

This is probably doubly true for parenting bloggers, who have to deal with not just their own mess, but that of their children too.

Wren Kitchens teamed up with five of the UK's top parenting bloggers to see behind the photos they upload. Often, there's quite a lot of chaos going on in the background.

Here are five Instagram shots, with everything that goes on behind the scenes too.

For every perfectly placed plate of cakes, there's a screaming child in the background.

"Every meal is completely unpredictable — some can go amazingly well, while others… not so much. It took two of us to distract Emma and coax her out of having a complete meltdown," said mum and lifestyle blogger, Bridie By The Sea.

"Despite the absolute chaos we had caused in the kitchen, it was a success. It's all about balance — enjoying the moment together regardless of mess and chaos."

A Californian Mum in London, Elfa, said she feels the pressure to make life look perfect and glossy on Instagram.

"I mainly try to ignore those pressures, it's tough enough being a mother these days," she said. "While I will sometimes share the better photos and not share the utter mess of my life, I like my blog and social media to be a fairly accurate portrayal of my family life."

The end result may look amazing, but there's always going to be mess to clean up afterwards.

17 maps that show how Americans identify their roots across the US

America USA July 4th Independence Day Flag

  • Americans come from a wide variety of ancestries.
  • Using data from the US Census Bureau's American Community Survey, we found how common various ancestries are in all 50 states.
  • For instance, Irish ancestry is most concentrated in the northeast, while Mexican and Mexican-American ancestry is most common in the states that share a border with Mexico.

Americans come from all over the world, and American families have countless stories about their origins.

The Census Bureau's American Community Survey asks several questions about residents' economic, social, and demographic characteristics and situations. One of the questions on the survey asks respondents to report their families' ancestries.

Using individual-level data from the Minnesota Population Center's Integrated Public Use Microdata Series for the 2016 American Community Survey, we found the total number of respondents in each state reporting various ancestries as either their first or second response to that question.

About 84% of respondents listed at least one ancestry. The following maps show the percentage of those who gave at least one answer that said they had a particular ancestry for 17 of the most common ancestries in the US.

All 19 episodes of 'Black Mirror,' ranked from worst to best

black mirror

Warning: This post contains spoilers for episodes of "Black Mirror."

"Black Mirror" won the Emmy for Outstanding Television Movie over the weekend for the second year in a row, this time for "USS Callister." Last year, "San Junipero" took the prize.

The "Twilight Zone"-inspired sci-fi anthology series is a dark reflection of our closer-than-ever future. It's haunting, but that's what draws audiences to it.

With a mix of sci-fi horror and dark comedy, creator Charlie Brooker's "Black Mirror" is funny at times because of the absurdity of it all, but just as scary when we realize that the show is a cautionary tale.

The series, in which every episode tells a different story about technology run amok, originally aired on British television's Channel 4 before being acquired by Netflix. Since then, the streaming service has completed two seasons of six episodes each.

In all, there are 19 episodes of "Black Mirror" (all of which are streaming on Netflix) and like with any show, there are disappointments and standouts. Business Insider has ranked all 19 from worst to best.

Below is every "Black Mirror" episode, ranked:

SEE ALSO: Netflix's 'Iron Fist' season 2 has agonizing dialogue, boring characters, and impressive fight choreography

19. "Men Against Fire" (Season 3, Episode 5)

"Black Mirror" is at its best when it is a cautionary tale without shoving the episode's larger themes down our throats. The best "Black Mirror" episodes are nuanced, or let the viewer draw their own conclusions. "Men Against Fire" is about a solider who uncovers a conspiracy when he discovers that the zombie-like creatures he's been ordered to hunt are actually human, masked by technology that wipes a soldiers' memories and controls what they see. It's a show-and-tell presentation with much more telling than showing, and the climax of the episode is an explosion of exposition.

18. "Arkangel" (Season 4, Episode 2)

"Arkangel," directed by Jodie Foster, is terribly basic. It only scratches the surface of what the episode could have explored in terms of parenting. A mom uses a device that tells her daughter's location and records what she sees, which could naturally have horrific ramifications for a mother-daughter relationship — and it does. The predictable conclusion of the episode could have been satisfying if the stakes were higher, but the episode plays it safe, and only cares to examine the most cliche aspects of a teenager's life.

17. "Fifteen Million Merits" (Season 1, Episode 2)

Before "Get Out" and "Black Panther," Daniel Kaluuya starred in a weak "Black Mirror" episode, but he gives a strong performance. The episode follows Kaluuya's character Bing in a society where people ride power-generating stationary bikes in exchange for merits. He falls for a woman who can sing beautifully, and he convinces her to enter a contest in which he uses all of his millions of merits to gift her an entry ticket. Things naturally collapse from there. The episode is a fine commentary on greed and commercialism, but doesn't rise above better episodes.

Here are the 10 most popular beers in America as millennials threaten the industry

Bud Light Beer

Some of the biggest beer brands in the United States are in trouble.

The beer industry has hit some major speed bumps in recent years.

Beer consumption among drinkers from 21 to 24 has fallen roughly 3% per year over the last 15 years. Beer penetration fell one percentage point in the US market from 2016 to 2017, while both wine and spirits were unmoved, according to Nielsen data. And, per-capita consumption of beer in the US dropped by nearly 10% from 2008 to 2017, according to Euromonitor data.

The longtime popularity of big-name brews like Bud Light means that their decline can mean millions of dollars in lost sales for parent companies like Anheuser-Busch InBev and Molson Coors. The most popular beers in the US make up a massive amount of what Americans drink.

Here are the biggest beers in the US by volume as of mid-2017, according to GlobalData Consumer data collected by the Bank of America and Merril Lynch:

SEE ALSO: MillerCoors is slashing jobs as Coors Light struggles and millennials ditch beer

10. Heineken

Percentage of country volume: 2%

Dutch brewer Heineken's namesake beer is slotted into the last place on the top 10 biggest beers in the US. However, the beer giant is also dabbling in some unexpected brews.

In August, Lagunitas, Heineken's California beer label, debuted a nonalcoholic beverage made with THC, called Hi-Fi Hops. The $8 drink is available in a handful of marijuana dispensaries in California, where the drug is legal.

9. Michelob

Percentage of country volume: 3%

Michelob has been on a roll recently, with Michelob Ultra gaining more market share than any other AB InBev beer for the last 13 quarters.

According to executives, Michelob Ultra has managed to tap into Americans' taste for more premium beers — one of the fastest categories in the industry. Super-premium beer has grown at a compound annual growth rate of 8.4% over the last five years, while mainstream beer has dropped by 0.6% in the same period.

8. Modelo

Percentage of country volume: 4%

Modelo is one of several Mexican beers that have been thriving in recent years as iconic American brands have struggled. According to Bank of America and Merril Lynch, Mexican beers accounted for 64% of beer imports in 2017, up from 46% in 2007.

10 drinks that can help you relieve and prevent bloating

$
0
0

smoothies milkshakesWhile there are many, many reasons you might be dealing with stomach bloating— from enjoying a large tasty meal to a new or chronic health condition — there are frustratingly few ways to reduce the stomach bloating that happens to all of us at one point or another.

The good news is, just as there are many foods that can reduce bloating naturally, there are also several beverages you can drink when you're battling digestive blues and are looking for some quick relief.

Whether your stomach is feeling full and unsettled after a heavy, salty meal, or you're noticing that you feel bloated more regularly these days, here are the drinks you can sip on to soothe your stomach. The great news is they're all very healthy options that you might already have on hand at home.

Take advantage of peppermint's natural muscle-relaxing properties.

If you're battling bloat due to IBS or other digestive woes and you're a coffee addict, we've got some news you might not want to hear: black coffee can make you bloated due to its high acidity, which can irritate your stomach lining and cause swelling, as registered dietitian Ashvini Mashru told Women's Health in 2016. Though some people find that coffee helps with bloating because it's a diuretic, others become sensitive to it and have the opposite effect.

The good news is, there are plenty of herbal teas that will actually help belly bloat, and they're so tasty, you might not even miss your morning cup of coffee. Peppermint tea is a great option — registered dietitian Amy Shapiro told The Cut in 2017 that peppermint features natural muscle-relaxing properties, so it can aid all kind of digestive issues, from IBS-related symptoms like gas and bloating to period cramps and aches.

Basically, peppermint tea helps relax your muscles and allow food, liquids, or trapped air and gas to pass through quicker, offering bloating relief that is just as delicious as coffee ... ASAP.

The potassium in coconut water is great for an unsettled stomach.

In 2016, Mashru told Shape magazine why she sips on coconut water when she needs to reduce stomach bloating, sharing, "I use it regularly because it has the potassium content like bananas so it helps regulate electrolyte levels and keeps fluid levels regular in our bodies."

She notes that one cup of coconut water contains 600 mg of potassium, more than a banana, which has 422 mg. Plus, it's a tasty way to stay hydrated when you feel like you're retaining water.

But plain water might actually be your best bet.

Sure, guzzling glass after glass of regular water sounds, well, boring, but when it comes to the battle of the bloat, there's no beating plain old H2O. It seems counter-intuitive, but if you feel like you're retaining water, you'll actually want to drink more water, not less.

"People tend to think that when they're holding on to water they should cut back drinking it, but that's not the case," says registered dietitian David Grotto, who explained to Fitness magazine that our bodies actually hold on to fluids when they're not getting enough of them, so if you're feeling bloated, drinking water is a great way to help your body release fluids instead of trapping them in.

Nothing is better than plain water to keep you well-hydrated, and WebMD recommends getting at least 6-8 cups in per day. But you'll actually want to avoid sparkling waters or seltzer — the bubbles in carbonated drinks expand inside your stomach, leading to that uncomfortably full and bloated feeling.

best light bulb

  • Every home needs good lighting that's energy-efficient and attractive. We've researched and tested a number of light bulbs to find the best ones you can buy.

  • The Cree 60W Equivalent Soft White A19 Dimmable LED Light Bulbs are our top pick because they will last you two decades, dim on demand, and save lots of energy.

Good lighting is essential in any home, and it all starts with the humble light bulb. The first electric light was developed back in 1802 by Humphry Davy, and different versions of the light bulb were made over the course of that century by a number of inventors until Thomas Edison created the first commercially successful incandescent light bulb in 1879 and got all the credit.

Up until fairly recently, incandescent bulbs were still king, but now, there are tons of options, including LEDS, Compact Floursecents, and smart bulbs. Light bulbs can change colors, turn on and off with voice commands or the movement of your arm, dim to suit your desires, and do so much more than Edison could have dreamed.

It can be confusing to figure out which light bulbs are best for your needs, but we've done the research to help you find the best bulbs to light up your life. Before we get into our picks, here's what you need to know.

Types of light bulbs

  • LED (Light-Emitting Diode): LED bulbs are the most energy efficient ones you can buy and they can last between 20,000 to 50,000 hours, which Consumer Reports says figures out to 18-46 years if you only have them on three hours a day. We highly recommend you choose these kinds of bulbs over all others. LED bulbs are more versatile, too, because they can change colors, dim to suit your preferences, and you can alter the color temperature so as to avoid the excessive blue light these kinds of bulbs tend to emit.
  • CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lightbulb): CFL bulbs were once the most energy efficient bulbs you could own, but now they're in second place behind LEDs. They're still a great option if LEDs prove to be too expensive for you. After all, CFLs last between seven to ten times longer than old-school incandescent bulbs, and they use about 75 percent less energy, which is nothing to sneeze at. CFLs come in multiple color temperatures, but few are dimmable.
  • Halogen incandescent light bulb: Halogen incandescent light bulbs use about 25 to 30 percent less energy than old-school incandescent bulbs. These bulbs work with dimmers and appear more blue or cool than other bulbs.
  • Smart light bulbs: Smart light bulbs have special features that most other bulbs don't offer, including the power of remote control, programmable scheduling, color changing, voice control, and compatibility with other smart home products. The best ones are LED bulbs and connect via Wi-Fi instead of Bluetooth. Some may require a hub, and they are pricey.

Features to consider

light bulbs

  • Lumens and brightness:  The brightness of light bulbs is measured in lumens. If you want to match the brightness of a 60-watt incandescent bulb, you should find a bulb that's 800 lumens.
  • Color temperature: Whether you like warm or cool light is entirely a matter of preference. Warm yellow light is around 2,700 Kelvin, white light is about 3,000K, bright white light is 3,500K to 4,100K, and bluish white light is 5,000K to 6,500K, according to Consumer Reports
  • Dimmable bulbs: If you hate super bright lights, you'll probably want to find light bulbs that let you adjust how bright they are. Most LED bulbs are dimmable, but many CFLs are not.
  • Motion-activated bulbs: Motion-activated bulbs turn on in response to motion. This is good for outdoor lights, entry-ways, and so on. Check out this one from Sengled on Amazon for $15.99

After much research and some testing at home, these are our top picks for the best light bulbs. We've included mostly LED bulbs because they represent the best value for your money, but we also highlight the best smart light bulbs and the best vintage filament light bulb you can buy.

Here are our top picks for the best light bulbs:

The best light bulb overall

Why you'll love it: The Cree 60W Equivalent Soft White A19 Dimmable LED Light Bulb produces soft white light that dims on demand and works as well indoors as out.

LED light bulbs are great for conserving energy, and the Cree Soft White Dimmable LED Light Bulbs are the best of the bunch. These bulbs produce a soft white light with a warm tone, thanks to their 2,700K output. The brightness level is similar to a 60 Watt incandescent bulb and you can dim them if you find these bulbs too bright.

The Cree bulbs pack 815 Lumens and only use 9.5 Watts of energy, which amounts to 84% less energy use in your home than you'd get with an old incandescent light bulb. The bulbs are Energy Star certified and Cree claims these bulbs will last you more than 22 years or 25,000 hours.

Cree offers a 10-year warranty in case you run into problems with your new LED light bulbs. You can use the bulbs indoors or outdoors without fear, which is a nice perk. You can pop them in most light fixtures, whether it's a table lamp, a floor lamp, or an overhead light fixture. Anywhere an A19 bulb can fit, these Cree ones will go.

The Wirecutter named the Cree bulbs its top pick for their versatility and warm light production. Buyers on Amazon praise the bulbs enthusiastically and they have a 4.5-star rating. The Home Depot's buyers also mostly approve of the Cree bulbs and agree that they produce great light. Many buyers also like that they come in a four-pack, though the price is a bit high at around $5 a bulb if you buy them at their original price.

Overall, these are the best light bulbs for most people because they work anywhere, produce warm light for LED bulbs, and conserve lots of energy.

Pros: Dimmable, Energy Star certified, 10-year warranty, soft white light tone, 60 Watt equivalent, lasts more than 22 years, can be used indoors or outdoors

Cons: A bit expensive

Buy a four-pack of the Cree 60W Equivalent Soft White A19 Dimmable LED Light Bulbs on Amazon for $16.91 (originally $21.97)

The best smart light bulbs

Why you'll love it: The Gen 3 Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance A19 Smart Bulb Starter Kit lets you program your lights, dim them, change their colors, and even turn them on or off with your voice.

Honestly, we're smart light bulb evangelists here. Ever since we started using the Philips Hue Starter Kit in our New York City apartment, we can't imagine life without them. They are quite simply the very best smart light bulbs money can buy.

You will have to shell out nearly $200 for the third-generation set, which comes with the hub and three color-changing bulbs, but you can spend as little as $69.99 if you buy the starter kit with the hub and two white-light-only bulbs. If you need more bulbs, you can get three white Hue bulbs for just $39.99, which amounts to $13.32 per bulb.

The hub connects to your Wi-Fi during the set-up process and syncs your bulbs up with the Philips Hue app. You can name your light bulbs, put them in rooms, and adjust them in the app. The lights can dim, change color, and turn on and off at a set time that you choose in the app.

Perhaps the best feature, though, is voice control. If you're an early adopter who sprung for an Amazon Echo or a Google Home smart speaker, or if you happen to own an iPhone with the HomeKit app, you can use your voice to turn your lights on and off at will. You can also dim them and change their color with your voice.

I named my Hue bulbs after presidents (nerdy, I know), so anytime I want a specific bulb off, I can say, "Hey Google, turn off the Jefferson (or Washington or Clinton)," and hey presto! The light turns off. It's absolutely magical, and it makes for one hell of a party trick.

The real benefits are in the energy savings you can get by dimming your bulbs and programming them to go on and off when the time it right. I've used lots of different smart bulbs, and none have worked as seamlessly or as effortlessly as the Philips Hue

Pros: Easy to set up, excellent app, dimmable, can change colors, programmable, very stable, work with other smart home devices like Google Home and Amazon Echo

Cons: Expensive

Buy the Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance A19 Gen 3 Starter Kit (three bulbs plus the hub) on Amazon for $168.99 (originally $199.99)

Buy the Philips Hue White A19 Starter Kit (two bulbs plus the hub) on Amazon for $69.99 (no color changing)

Buy three Philips Hue White A19 Light Bulbs on Amazon for $39.99

The best LED light bulb

Why you'll love it: The Philips 60W Equivalent Soft White A19 Dimmable LED Light Bulb dims to a soft glow, saves tons of energy, and produces warm light in every room.

If the Cree bulbs aren't for you, the Philips Dimmable LED Light Bulb is the next best thing. These 60 Watt equivalent bulbs have a brightness of 800 Lumens and you can dim them further if you want to. The light temperature is also adjustable between 2,200K and 2,700K, so you can determine how warm you want the lighting to look.

The Philips bulbs will last you 22.8 years if you turn them on for three hours a day and they use only 9.5-Watts of energy to consume 80% less energy compared to older incandescent bulbs. Since they're A19 bulbs, they fit in most light fixtures, including table lamps, floor lamps, and overhead light fixtures.

Some 94% of people who bought the Philips LED bulbs at The Home Depot love these bulbs and give them an average rating of 4.7 stars. Buyers on Amazon love these light bulbs, too, and The Wirecutter called them its runner-up for the best LED light bulbs.

You can get the Philips LED light bulbs in a six pack, and they average $4 per bulb, which isn't bad.

Pros: Soft white light, dimmable, adjustable color temperature, environmentally friendly, long lasting, versatile

Cons: A bit expensive, not for outdoors

Leslie Moonves, CEO and Chairman of CBS Corporation, left the company after a new wave of sexual assault and harassment allegations, the network announced Sunday night.

The New Yorker published a report Sunday detailing accusations against the media executive from six women. This came after CBS hired multiple law firms to launch an investigation against Moonves in August, after six other women accused Moonves of sexual misconduct or harassment.

Moonves was one of the highest-paid CEOs in the US, thanks to a compensation package of cash, restricted shares and stock options worth $57 million in 2014, Forbes reported. He's worth an estimated $700 million.

CNBC reported on Thursday that the board was considering giving him a $100 million exit package, but CBS said in its Sunday statement that Moonves would not receive any severance benefits at this time, pending the results of an independent investigation. Moonves has denied the allegations against him.

Here's how Moonves made his $700 fortune.

In the early 1990s, Moonves developed hit TV shows including "ER" and "Friends" at Warner Bros.

Moonves started out as an actor, with small roles in TV series including "Gemini Man" in 1976 and "The Six Million Dollar Man" in 1977.

He went on to take over Lorimar Television in 1989, which then merged with Warner Bros. Television, according to CNN Money.

By 1993, Moonves was president of Warner Bros. Television, where his team developed hit TV shows that included "ER" and "Friends," according to Money magazine.

He moved to CBS in 1995, where he helped bring in new talent including Bill Cosby.

Moonves became president of CBS Entertainment in 1995, according to Money, where he started working on bringing in new talent, including Bill Cosby to star in a new sitcom

He was promoted to CEO of CBS Television in 1998 and became chairman and CEO in 2006, Money reported.

During his time at the network, Moonves launched such popular shows as "Survivor" and "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," as CNN Money reported. CBS also grew its success in comedy, with "Everybody Loves Raymond,""Two and a Half Men," and "The Big Bang Theory."

Moonves made $69.3 million in 2017 — and he's made at least $50 million a year since 2010.

Moonves made $69.3 million in 2017, making him the highest-paid Hollywood executive, according to a recent analysis by The Wrap based on SEC filings.

That's $20 million more than the earnings of Jeff Bewkes, the CEO of Time Warner, who came in second on The Wrap's list for 2017 with $49 million.

In 2016, Moonves made $69.6 million. He's made at least $50 million each year since 2010, according to The Wrap.

Forbes classified him as the 15th richest Hollywood power broker in its 2015 ranking.

23 countries where money can buy you a second passport or 'elite residency'

$

Jade Mountain Saint Lucia 37

The super-rich are no longer just spending their money on private jets, yachts, and hotels — they're also splashing out on second passports.

The Second Citizenship Survey 2017 from CS Global Partners found that 89% of people would like to own a second passport, and over 34% said they had looked into investing in a second citizenship.

Even more striking were the 80% who said they would be willing to invest or donate 5% of their annual salary for a second citizenship — more than they spend on monthly rent.

Luckily, a number of countries offer Citizenship by Investment (CIP) programs where money — normally invested in real estate — can actually buy a second passport, and the elite status that comes along with owning citizenship in another country.

Other programs offer "elite residency"— an extended visa with perks — in exchange for similar investments.

Nuri Katz, President of Apex Capital Partners, an international advisory firm that specialises in CIPs, told Business Insider: "For a lot of wealthy people having a second or third passport is important for the ability to travel. For some it's also a status symbol, like buying a fancy car to show your friends."

He added that along with the travel benefits and the status that comes along with owning real estate around the world, the programs also allow people to manage their tax burdens.

"Second citizenship is becoming more than just getting a passport," he said. "There are certain advantages towards using second citizenship to create residence in countries where tax burdens would be lower than where you are at the current time."

However, Katz explained there's a difference between CIPs and residency programs.

"Citizenship is forever, and cannot be taken away unless you received it under fraudulent circumstances," he said. "You also get a passport."

Meanwhile, as laws change, a residency visa can be taken away — but it's a more affordable way to get the perks that come along with living in another country.

In order to put together a complete list of countries that offer citizenship or residency by investment, along with advice from Katz, Business Insider consulted the latest CBI Index, published by the Financial Times' PWM magazine, and spoke to global investment migration firm Henley & Partners and global citizenship and residence planning company Knightsbridge Capital Partners.

Whether you choose to splash out for full citizenship or you invest in residency, here are 23 countries where money can buy you a second passport — or at least a chance to live long-term abroad — ranked by cost, from cheapest to most expensive.

23. Thailand — 'Elite residency' from THB 500,000 ($15,253 or £11,793).

The Thai government offers "elite" residency visas for wealthy foreign citizens, allowing them to live in the country for around $3,000 a year.

There are seven different packages, with the most expensive being the "Elite Ultimate Privilege" scheme for $60,000 for 20 years of residency.

Here are the three most popular options, according to Henley & Partners:

Elite Easy Access

  • Five-year residence visa for the one-time fee of THB 500,000 ($15,253)

Elite Family Excursion

  • A five-year visa for two people, for a one-time fee of THB 800,000 ($24,405), plus an additional charge of THB 300,000 ($9,152) per dependent.

Elite Superiority Extension/Elite Ultimate Privilege

  • 20-year residence visa for a one-time fee of THB 2.14 million ($65,283)
-Package includes complimentary VIP privileges such as government concierge services and airport services

22. Latvia — Residency from €64,600 (£58,318 or $74,973).

For residency in Latvia, here's what's required:

  • A minimum of €286,000 ($333,064 or £257,472) over a period of five years in a credit institution, or;
  • To invest in equity capital, the foreign national must invest a minimum of €36,000 ($41,924 or £32,409) and must pay a minimum of €28,600 ($33,306 or £25,747) in the next year.

Henley & Partners added that there are also options to apply for the residence permit through the purchase of real estate or interest-free government bonds.

You can apply for citizenship after five years through process of naturalization (i.e. language test, history test), according to Katz.

"The true catch here is when they want to get citizenship, they have to take a language test, and Latvian is an impossible language to learn as an adult," Katz said.

"No one can, and they know it, and as such they know no one will ever become a citizen."

=19. Saint Lucia — Citizenship from $100,000 (£77,786).

There are three ways to get citizenship in Saint Lucia, according to Katz:

  • A donation of at least $100,000 (£77,113) to the Saint Lucia National Economic Fund (depending on number of dependents), or;
  • Investment of at least $300,000 (£231,517) in an approved real estate development, or;
  • Investment of $3.5 million (£2.7 million) in an approved enterprise project.

The best shower heads you can buy

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

best shower head

  • Shower time should be relaxing, and your choice of shower head plays a huge role in making your shower more soothing. Some people love a rain-style shower, while others want a strong, pulsing jet to massage sore muscles.

  • That’s why the Moen S6320 Two-Function Rain Shower Head is the best one you can buy  — It can switch between both types of shower styles, depending on your mood.

The rush of prepping for work or school can almost make you feel relieved to jump in a car and sit in rush hour traffic, listening to two DJs tell bad jokes and play weird sound effects. But before fighting through the commute, it’s time for rushing around, looking for the right outfit, figuring out which overnight emails you were expected to answer before 4 a.m., and wrestling with which flavor packet to plug into the coffee maker. There is one time when you can actually relax – in the shower.

Sure, you might have to shorten your shower after you hit the snooze alarm three times, but the shower stall is still your sanctuary where no one can bother you, even if it’s only for a few minutes.

To ensure that your shower is as relaxing as it can be, you will need to make some choices about the kind of shower head you want to use. You might be surprised at how many shower head options are available.

Modern shower heads work differently than older shower heads, so there are quite a few advantages to purchasing a new shower head. An older shower head’s interior often was a cavity that filled with water, forcing the water through the tiny nozzles, meaning the individual nozzles had very little water pressure. A newer shower head has individual channels that feel the nozzles, increasing the ability to deliver water pressure.

With all of the different options and features in shower heads, you can pick exactly the type of shower you’d like to have, including rain-style, pulsing jets, or steady spray.

  • Full body: Full body shower installations include nozzles throughout vertical length of the shower stall, rather than just one nozzle at the top of the stall. Although these are really nice designs for a shower, they’re a bit beyond the scope of this list because of the special installation and high expense required.
  • Handheld: Some shower heads fit inside a clamp near the upper pipe, but then disconnect so they can be held in your hand at the end of a flexible hose, allowing you to direct the water spray for more efficient cleaning, as Kitchen Bath Guides explains.
  • High pressure: Some shower heads include high-pressure jets. By turning a ring, these shower heads often provide different spray patterns as well as massage settings.
  • Rainfall: Some showers offer big shower heads that release a lot of water, almost like rainfall. They usually don’t offer the water pressure or pulsing options of other shower head designs.
  • Specialty: Newer shower heads have some interesting specialty features. Some include a built-in wireless speaker inside the shower head, allowing you to sync your smartphone to the speaker to play music or audio. Some include LED lighting that makes it fun to shower.

Finally, Consumer Reports says you must pay attention to the type of installation required for the shower head you pick. Some shower heads will simply screw onto the water pipe that sticks out of the bathroom wall, which most people can handle themselves. Other shower heads require you to tear up drywall to install some components. Understand that you may need to hire a plumber to complete the job, so think about this added cost when purchasing a shower head.

The best shower head overall

Why you'll love it: Unlike most rain-style shower heads, the Moen S6320 Velocity Two-Function Rain 8-inch Shower Head also offers a surprisingly powerful jet spray.

Most rain-style shower heads don’t offer any other type of water delivery. However, the Moen S6320 Velocity Two-Function Rain 8-inch Shower Head is able to deliver both rain and jet spray styles in one shower head.

The shower head is a great size for a rain-style shower head, and the Moen S6320 also offers immersion technology, which allows for a concentrated jet spray.

A Great Shower says the rain-style shower is amazing and highlights how the shower head uses 100 nozzles to create a rain-like shower. However, the advantage of this shower head is that it can also act as a high-pressure jet spray shower when you want to switch things up. The Shower Hacks review also praises the S6320 shower head for its better than expected water pressure on the jet spray setting.

The That Bathroom review says two of the best features of the Moen Two-Function shower head involve the ability to switch between rain and jet styles, as well as the four different finishes you can choose from, including chrome, antique bronze, brushed nickel, and oil-rubbed bronze.

Buyers on Amazon give the shower head very high ratings as well. It has an average star rating of 4.7, which is very impressive. One Amazon customer reviewer was impressed with the water pressure the S6320 rain shower head provides.

Of course, it is an expensive shower head, costing more than $100 on Amazon. However, when you take into account that it originally cost $252.90 when Moen introduced this shower head, it's a decent bargain. It also has a lifetime warranty.

Pros: Versatile shower head, 100 nozzles for rain style shower, jet style setting provides surprising water pressure level, four finishes available, 8-inch shower head is great for rain-style setting

Cons: Longevity is questionable, price is high

Buy the Moen S6320 Velocity Two-Function Rain 8-Inch Shower Head on Amazon for $196.88 to $299.99 (price varies based on color)

The best rain-style shower head

Why you'll love it: The low-priced WaterPoint 8-inch Rain Shower Head delivers an impressive amount of water pressure and water volume for a rain shower.

If you’ve hesitated to purchase a rain-style shower head in the past because of concerns over high water usage, the WaterPoint 8-inch Rain Shower Head contains a flow restrictor that limits the shower head to 2.5 gallons of water per minute. You can remove the restrictor if you’d like more water flow as well.

Depending on how you use the shower, removing the flow restrictor may actually help you spend less time in the shower, reviewers say. EBCL Mommy's reviewer was impressed with the coverage area of the WaterPoint rain shower head, which allowed her family to save money with shorter showers. One Amazon customer agreed, saying the ability to use the strong water flow of this shower head to reduce the amount of time spent in the shower is impressive.

The Lucks List appreciated the look and design of the WaterPoint shower head, as well as its ability to deliver a steady water flow. Buyers on Amazon are largely satisfied by their purchase, and the shower head has a 4.7-star rating. Perhaps the best thing about the WaterPoint Shower Head is its low price.

Pros: Delivers a large volume of water, very low price, good water pressure for rain-style shower head, large 8-inch shower head, restrictor inside shower head cuts water usage to 2.5 gallons per minute

Cons: Air intake yields noisy shower head, some plastic in construction

Buy the WaterPoint 8-Inch Rain Shower Head on Amazon for $25.87 (originally $39.95)

The best high-pressure shower head

Why you'll love it: If you prefer a massaging shower jet to a soothing rain-style shower, the Speakman S-2252 Signature Anystream High-Pressure Shower Head is a great option.

If you’re someone who doesn’t like the gentle rain-style shower heads, the Speakman S-2252 Signature Anystream High-Pressure Shower Head will be more your style.

This high-pressure shower head delivers either 2 or 2.5 gallons of water per minute using six adjustable jets that produce 48 individual sprays. Even those with low water pressure at home will receive high-quality results with the Speakman Anystream model. It delivers just the right amount of pressure – not enough, let’s say, to put an eye out, but enough to massage some tired shoulder and back muscles.

The Shower Remedy review says the self-cleaning nozzles in the Speakman shower head are a great feature. Meanwhile, the Best Shower Heads review highlighted the longevity of the S-2252 high-pressure shower head, thanks to its brass construction. Finally, the CanaVP review liked the patented Anystream 360 design of this shower head, which lets it deliver strong water pressure.

One Amazon buyer liked the water pressure the Speakman S-2252 delivers and says it’s easy to remove the water restrictor from the shower head for even greater water flow. However, another Amazon reviewer didn’t like that the shower head has no jets in the center, which left a cold spot in the jet spray.

Pros: High-pressure jet spray even in low water pressure households, adjustable jet sprays, self-cleaning nozzles, six finishes available, both 2.5 and 2 gallons per minute water flow shower heads available

Cons: Higher than average price, no jets in center of shower head

Buy the Speakman S-2252 Signature Anystream High-Pressure Shower Head on Amazon for $65 to $113.10 (price varies based on color)

"Santa Clarita Diet"— a Netflix Original

Netflix description: They're ordinary husband and wife realtors until she undergoes a dramatic change that sends them down a road of death and destruction.

Seasons: 2

Episodes: 20

This harsh satire of suburban life isn't afraid to get really, really weird and that's why it works so well. Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant have incredible chemistry that makes this show special, and it's unraveling but absurd mythology makes it easy to binge.

"One Day at a Time"— a Netflix Original

Netflix description: In a reimagining of the TV classic, a newly single Latina mother raises her teen daughter and tween son with the "help" of her old-school mom.

Seasons: 2
