Here's What It Takes To Survive In The Tribal Amazon [PHOTOS]

For hundreds of years, the Ashaninka, Madija, and Huni Kui peoples have made their home in the Brazilian and Peruvian Amazon rainforest, living off the land. Until recently, the groups have lived peacefully amongst each other, struggling to survive in the often harsh, but bountiful environment.

Over the last three years, logging by Peruvians has led to widespread deforestation, putting strains on what the environment can support. The deforestation has led other indigenous tribes, considered "uncontacted" because of their complete lack of peaceful contact with mainstream society, to begin invading the territories of the Ashaninka and other peaceful tribes. These "uncontacted" Indians, called "Bravos" by Brazilians, have been raiding peaceful villages.

Reuters photographer Lunae Parracho recently took a trip through the Amazon rainforest with the attacked tribes to see life from their perspective.

The Ashaninka, Madija, and Huni Kui people live in northwestern Brazil in the Acre state, which borders Peru. They live in small villages and use traditional medicine.

Amazon1Despite threats over the years from drug traffickers, oil companies, and even conservation groups, the people have remained fiercely independent.

Amazon2Ashaninka, Madija, and Huni Kui live primarily by hunting and fishing local wildlife and farming yucca roots, sweet potato, corn, bananas, rice, coffee, cacao, and sugar cane using traditional environmentally conscious methods that promote biodiversity.

amazon8The Huni Kui are the most prominent users of "traditional" medicine. Here a Huni Kui shaman prepares ayahuasca, a powerful psychedelic brew, to use in a healing ritual.

amazon5The Ashaninka are friendly to the Brazilian government. For a time, the Brazilian government manned a base nearby called the Envira Front of Ethno-Environmental Protection. The base was meant to protect Brazil's indigenous people from threats, but has since been abandoned. The Ashaninka have debated taking over the facility.

amazon10Illegal logging has devastated the Amazon rainforest over the last 20 years. It has become a serious issue for Brazil's indigenous tribes recently, as it has put pressure on territory and on the natural resources they live off of.

amazon12The "Bravos," indigenous people with no contact to the outside world, have begun moving into Ashaninka territory.

"They steal pots, knives, cloth. They live naked, speak another language and don't want to talk. They are at war with everyone. If they get close, they shoot arrows at us," Ashaninka chief Txate told Parracho.

amazon13Poshe and Biana, an Ashaninka couple, say their three-year-old daughter Sawatxo was kidnapped by the Bravos a couple of years ago.

amazon4The Bravos are not the only threat that the indigenous people face. The most common cause of death for children is diarrhea. The groups are not opposed to modern medicine, but there is no health clinic nearby and a trip for help can take up to ten days. This man's niece died of diarrhea two weeks prior, as they went in search of medical help.

amazon11"The Bravos are coming at us because Peruvian loggers are heading straight for them. And nobody ever explained to us ... why [the government] fled the base. Now we know that we need to take care of our territory, because if we have to leave here we don't have any place to go," Txate told Parracho.

amazon7The groups have asked the Brazilian government to step in for their protection and send troops to patrol the area. That has yet to happen. Some of the groups are armed, but they maintain that they have no desire to fight the invading tribes.

the musket roomEarning a Michelin star is an achievement many professional chefs spend their lives working toward.

But amazingly enough, Chef Matt Lambert got his star within four months of opening his own restaurant, The Musket Room, with the help of Kickstarter funds

He and his management team ultimately raised $25,636 from 123 backers on the crowdfunding site.

The Musket Room, in New York City's Nolita neighborhood, features cuisine native to New Zealand, with traditional seafood dishes and red deer among the highlights.

We recently paid a visit to The Musket Room to try it out for ourselves.

Live plants hang in front of the entrance to the Musket Room, located on Elizabeth Street in Nolita.

Inside, the woodsy theme continues, complete with a live tree sprouting from the bar.

The restaurant is fairly small, with only two rooms to seat guests.

21 Gorgeous Photos That Show Why Iran Is A New Tourist Hotspot

mosque in iranIran is becoming a tourist hotspot this year, with tour operators reporting significant increases in tourists booking trips to the Middle Eastern country.

Perhaps that's because of a slight thaw in its relationships with the West, or simply because of the allure of exploring a little-known tourist destination with few other tourists around.

Americans are allowed to visit Iran. In fact, Iran is actively encouraging visits from them. But U.S. citizens who do visit must travel with an official tour guide and get their itinerary approved by the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) to get a visa. Travel within Iran is considered safe if you tour responsibly, even though the U.S. Department of State has issued a travel warning to Iran.

From ancient cities with breathtaking mosques to gorgeous natural landscapes, here are some of Iran's most beautiful, and untouched, tourist attractions.

Isfahan, located in the center of the country, is perhaps Iran’s most touristy city, famous for its Islamic architecture, covered bridges, palaces, and mosques.

It's home to several major tourist sites, such as Imam Square (Naqsh-e Jahan Square), one of the largest — and most beautiful — city squares in the world. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site that features gorgeous Iranian and Islamic architecture.

There are also beautiful mosques here, like the dreamy Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque.

Meet iRobot's Amazing Line Of Security And Defense Robots Used Around The World By Military And Police

iRobot 710 Warrior 1.JPG

iRobot is most famous for its line of consumer robots designed to vacuum and wash your floors, but the company also has a second business providing tough-as-nails robots to police and military.

These robots go directly into harm's way to scout unfamiliar territory, handle dangerous objects, and even deactivate bombs, all while keeping their human operators a safe distance away.

Althought these bots only account for about 10% of iRobot's business at present, you'll soon see that the company has as much commitment to building tough tools for the military as it does to building cute domestic robots that keep your floors clean for you.

FirstLook is iRobot's most portable offering, weighing only five pounds and easily fitting into a backpack. Tim Trainer, iRobot's VP of Product Management for Defense and Security, told us "It plays like a game," said Trainer. "You steer it with an XBOX controller, and my son's much better at it than I am."

FirstLook is designed to be thrown into out-of-reach places — over a wall, through a window — to send back video of what's going on in unfamiliar territory. Throwing probably doesn't strike you as the safest way to deploy a robot, but this thing can safely sustain a 15-foot drop onto concrete.

Once inside the location, the robot is smart enough to right itself with its flippers no matter how it lands, ready to receive instructions and send back video from its four-camera 360-degree view.

Famed Cronut Bakery Shut Down Due To Mice Problems

No need to line up for cronuts tomorrow morning — Eater New York is reporting that Dominique Ansel Bakery, home of the cronut, has been shuttered by the Department of Health.

Thanks to a tipster, Eater added this picture to Twitter of the DOH notice and an ominous “CLOSED” sign hanging in the bakery's doorway.

We just heard back from Dominique Ansel Bakery, which released this official statement:

Due to the video that was released showing a small mouse running across the screen for 5 seconds, the health department used it as evidence to ask us to re-cement and closed down the bakery for extermination. As a small one-shop bakery, we often feel like we're being looked at under a tremendous microscope. A lot of time people don't see the larger ramifications of their actions and how a tiny video can be sensationalized and cause harm and damages to an honest, small business that people's livelihood depends on. We of course believe that we run a clean and good operation, but see that we were targeted and will rise to the occasion to be even better.

Chef says we will be doing everything that was asked of us, and hope to reopen on Monday mid-day. Our team will be here in person to speak to customers live.

The inspection report is unavailable online at the time of this post, but here is the video in question that Gothamist posted of a mouse scurrying around the kitchen.Until today, the bakery has had a solid “A” grade, even though its most recent inspection from October cited the restaurant for “evidence of live mice” and docked the kitchen for not being “vermin proof.”

Here's how the restaurant fared during that last Department of Health inspection:

Dominique Ansel gained widespread notoriety almost a year ago when he invented the Cronut — a cross between a donut and a croissant. The dessert became a nationwide sensation, and lines at the SoHo bakery extended around the block.

Since then, Ansel has created everything from a deluxe s’more to a "cookie and milk" shot.

Earlier this week, the Health Department shut down a Manhattan Dunkin' Donuts after finding evidence of rats.

Veteran AP photographer Anja Niedringhaus, 48, was killed when an Afghan policeman opened fire on her car Friday, while she traveled in a convoy of election workers delivering ballots in Khost city.

The shooter, who also injured AP reporter Kathy Gannon, later surrendered to police and was arrested.

Niedringhaus began her photojournalist career at the age of 16 and joined AP as a traveling photographer in 2002. She was the only woman on a team of 11 AP photographers awarded the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news photography.

Chief AP photographer Muhammed Muheisen described a conversation with her two days before her death: "I was so concerned about her safety. And she was like, 'Momo, this is what I'm meant to do. I'm happy to go."

"Anja was a very caring person, so committed to photography and documenting stories, she was full of fun and life, today we lost a great photographer but her photography is her legacy," Muheisen, who is based in Pakistan and worked with Niedringhaus for over a decade, wrote by email.

Here are some highlights of her work and her legacy:

Here's What Ku Klux Klan Gatherings Are Like Today

AKarenKKK 23

Decades after the era when the Ku Klux Klan lynched African-Americans, the hate group is still fighting for white power.

There are active chapters in 41 U.S. states, with between 5,000 and 8,000 active members, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. Members are split among local organizations like the Fraternal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan in Tennessee and a few national organizations, like the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan.

Photojournalist Anthony S. Karen has spent the last 8 years documenting Klan organizations in 14 states across the country. We've published some of his photos below; more can be found in an eBook on iTunes called “White Pride.AKarenKKK 21Karen says that, when he works, he strives to be a nonjudgmental observer who accepts each person as an individual. This attitude helped him get incredible access to notoriously wary subjects.AKarenKKK 4Karen started his project by contacting a number of local KKK groups via contact information on their websites. Most said no, but one eventually agreed to let him photograph a cross-lighting ceremony if he left his camera in the car until the ceremony began.

Cross-lightings are most often associated with attempts by the Klan to intimidate or threaten minority members of its community, though Klan members claim it is meant to symbolize the members' faith in Christ. Some current Klan organizations attempt to distance themselves from cross-lightings meant to intimidate people, which they call "cross-burnings."AKarenKKK 22After the first event, Karen met with the leader of one of the largest Klan organizations who extended an open invitation for Karen to attend any events that he hosted. The acceptance from the Klan leader led other organizations to take him seriously and invite him to other gatherings. This photo is a Klan gathering in North Carolina.

AKarenKKK 10AKarenKKK 14 The Klan also invited him to a lot of casual gatherings, including meetings known as Klonvocations, "unity" BBQs, and even a traditional Klan wedding, held at a Civil War battleground. Here, an Imperial Wizard and his wife grocery shop before a spring "unity" BBQ.

AKarenKKK 20AKarenKKK 16Klan members were mostly guarded when Karen first met them, so he left his camera at his side for most of the first rally he attended and later only photographed people with their permission.

"Once your subject feels that you respect them as a person, they tend to forget about the camera altogether and the intimacy will occur naturally," Karen told Business Insider.

Karen says that the overall impression he got was that today's Klan members often join because they want to be part of an exclusively white organization that opposes homosexuality, interracial relationships, and illegal immigration.

AKarenKKK 2AKarenKKK 17The largest Klan organization is called Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, which is also known as the Knight's Party and based in Harrison, Ark. Here's the national director of the Knights Party, Thomas Robb (center), along with some of his family members.

AKarenKKK 12

Each year, the Knights Party holds an annual congress, called the Faith and Freedom Conference. It is usually held outside of Harrison on a Klan member's property. Most attendees come with their whole families, and some camp outside the conference compound for the weekend. Here are Klan members on a break from that conference.

AKarenKKK 9Karen says that, for the most part, members try to avoid confrontation, though it happens most often during public events.

One confrontation that Karen witnessed followed a rally hosted by the Mississippi White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan at the Lee County Courthouse in Tupelo, Miss. The protest was against illegal immigration and local sex offenders. Klan members were also protesting for schools to reinstate mandatory prayers.

It was the first major Klan appearance in Tupelo since the 1970s. AKarenKKK 19

How To Make Your iPhone's Battery Last Longer

$
0
0

gold iphone 5s

Have you ever wondered why your iPhone’s battery is already at 20% even though you just charged it this morning? To say we use our smartphones for everything wouldn't be an exaggeration. From listening to music during commutes to finding directions and working on the go, your smartphone's battery can never last long enough.

But there are ways to get more out of your iPhone's battery life. Certain tasks consume more energy than others even though you may not realize it, and there are some sneaky settings that secretly drain your iPhone's battery behind the scenes.

If you follow these practices, you're likely to get much more juice out of your iPhone on a daily basis.

Disable auto app updates

iOSAppUpdates

Apple introduced the automatic app update with iOS 7 in September. This means you can set your iPhone to automatically update apps and music instead of having to do it manually. While this can be useful, it consumes more battery power. Try turning this feature off to extend your iPhone's battery by navigating to Settings > iTunes & App Store > Automatic Downloads. Press the green switches next to each category to turn automatic downloads off.

Turn off background app refresh

iphone app update in background

This feature automatically refreshes the content of an app whenever you phone is connected to Wi-Fi or cellular service. Essentially, this means your phone is fetching data for all of the apps running in the background even if you're not using them. To shut this off, head over to Settings > General > Background App Refresh. From here, you can choose to disable this function for certain apps or all of them by pressing the green switches.

Turn of settings like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and AirDrop when not in use

iOSBluetooth

If these settings are left turned on when not in use, they will unnecessarily drain your power. You can turn off all of these settings directly through the Control Center in iOS 7, which appears when you flick up from the bottom of the screen. After launching the Control Center, you can tap the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi icons to turn them on or off. To turn off AirDrop, tap where it says AirDrop under the music player.

Make sure idle apps aren't draining your battery

iOSGPSSymbol

Turning off background app refreshes will take care of this problem in most cases, but there are ways to tell if idle apps are consuming unnecessary power. For example, keep an eye out for the little GPS icon in the upper-right corner near your battery indicator. If you see the tiny compass arrow GPS symbol there when you’re not actively using an app, that means an app running in the background is using GPS data. This, in turn, drains your battery. You can take a look at which apps are currently running by double-tapping the home button.

Be smart about how often you charge your phone

iPhoneCharger

That old myth about overcharging causing damage to your smartphone's battery isn't true. Overcharging (i.e. keeping your phone plugged in when it's already at 100%) doesn't actually damage lithium ion batteries. However, smartphone batteries do have a life cycle. Each battery can only withstand a certain number of charges before performance becomes severely affected. This is why older phones tend to die quickly — simply because their batteries have gone through many more charge cycles. In other words, the less often you charge your phone, the longer its battery life lasts since you're preserving its charge cycles.

Use Apple's native apps when you can

iphone 5 apps kevins homescreen 4

Apple's native apps are optimized to consume less power within the operating system, according to Wayne Lam, senior analyst of consumer electronics for IHS iSuppli. That's not to say you shouldn't use third-party apps. That would nearly defeat the purpose of buying an iPhone in the first place. But using them less often or cutting down on them when your battery is running low could help your battery last longer.

Try using a third-party battery saver app

iphone battery life

The iPhone doesn't come with a battery saver mode, but there are several third-party apps in the App Store that could do the trick. The free Battery Doctor app, for example, helps you modify your settings to cut out tasks that consume the most power. It also provides tips on when you should and shouldn't charge your phone. Battery Life Magic is another high-rated free app that helps you preserve your iPhone's battery.

Buy a battery pack for your iPhone

mophie space pack for iphone 5s

If you've got some money to spend, there are plenty of battery cases and external batteries that can help your iPhone last longer. Battery cases from Mophie, Anker, and uNu are among the most highly rated, and they typically fall in the $50 range. Mophie's recently released Space Pack not only extends battery life, but adds some extra storage space to your iPhone as well. Naturally, it's a bit pricier than more-basic options, starting at $149.95.

And often, still images don't do these phenomena justice. You can only understand their power, movement, and beauty through animation.

From electric blue ocean waves to spiraling columns of fire, here are some of the planet's most amazing natural occurrences and land formations in GIFs.

Fire devils occur when intense heat brought on by drought combines with rotating air.

These menacing spirals of flame, also known as fire tornadoes, can grow to be more than 150 feet tall, spewing embers and debris into the air. Though typically only lasting a few minutes, the whirls of fire can contribute to the spread of wildfires.

Brinicles are underwater icicles.

When sea ice melts, it leaves behind brine that is so salty it sinks. A brinicle forms when sea water freezes around the descending salt.

As the underwater icicle moves toward the sea floor, it kills nearly everything in its path by encasing it in ice. A film crew for the BBC was the first to capture this phenomenon on camera.

Bioluminescent red tide, which causes ocean waters in Southern California to glow neon blue at night, is created by single-celled organisms called dinoflagellates.

The organism forms algae blooms, or red tides, that emit electric blue light when disrupted. All it takes is the breaking of a wave or a surfer paddling for the chemical reaction to happen. Although many forms of red tide are toxic, this particular form is harmless to humans.

Richard Gere Hamptons Mansion $65 million

Richard Gere has dropped the price of his North Haven mansion in the Hamptons to $56 million, Hamptons.com reports.

Gere first listed the 6.3-acre estate last summer in July for an outrageous $65 million. At the time, we wondered if the 12-bedroom home was actually worth the stunning price-tag.

The property, known as Strongheart Manor, was built in 1902 and comes with two guest houses, an outdoor fireplace pavilion, and a dock that looks out onto the water.

It's been renovated and expanded to include twelve bedrooms and over 12,000 square feet of space. The home is currently listed through Sotheby's International Realty, which recently added even more high-quality pictures of the mansion to beef up the listing.

The price cut could help Strongheart Manor sell — especially with the new Hamptons season on the horizon — but considering Gere bought the entire property originally for $11.3 million (not including the cost of his subsequent renovation), $56 million still seems awfully steep.

If you haven't re-watched all of season three before the HBO series starts again, here's what you need to know before returning to the realm of Westeros.

Warning: There are spoilers ahead.

The last time we saw Daenerys (Emilia Clarke), she gained an army of slaves after setting them free.

She also gained Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel) as her servant.

Now, she'll be dealing with her ever-growing dragons. If trailers have been any indication, they may start becoming a source of problems.

23 Ways Traders Used To Mess With Each Other On Wall Street

It's April Fools' Day and you can expect that some pranks and jokes might be pulled on Wall Street.

But the pranks are nothing like they used to be.

If you ever get the chance to speak to a veteran floor trader, you really should. They're likely full of incredible stories about the good (or bad) ole days on the floor.

They'll probably tell you about the amazing sense of camaraderie on the floor and the epic pranks they used to pull on each other.

"Every joke was invented down there," a retired NYSE specialist said.

"I always tell people that it was like being in a fraternity.  The biggest jokes that were played on new workers and even better when companies had their clients come to visit were the spurs, an arrow on their backs.  When the arrow (which was made of paper) was placed on their back everyone would do a tribal dance and chants.  The customers had no idea what was going on, it was comical," a former NYMEX clerk told us.

However, the humor has subsided in recent years since some of the exchanges are publicly traded and have more eyes and television cameras on them.

"Fortunately, or unfortunately, you don't see those pranks anymore," another veteran floor trader told Business Insider.

Veteran traders both in New York and Chicago from the NYSE, CBOT, NYMEX and AMEX told us about some of the classic pranks and jokes they used to pull back in the day.

* If you have another trading floor prank, joke or story you would like to share, please send Julia an email at jlaroche@businessinsider.com.

A really long time ago, traders would launch cups of water at each other from their spring-loaded jump seats.

Location: NYSE

The Prank:"The old style trading posts had spring-loaded jump seats that the traders could pull down to sit and take a load off.  Those days, they only traded two to three million shares a day, so there was plenty of downtime.  The prank was to take a paper cup, fill it with water, and wedge it into the seat.  The next sucker to pull the seat down launched this missile at himself - and got doused.  Good clean (wet) fun!," the grandson of a NYSE trader told Business Insider.

If you tripped and fell at the NYSE, they'd make it look like a crime scene.

Location: NYSE

The prank: Back when the floor of the NYSE was super crowded if a guy would fall down, others floor brokers and specialists would draw a chalk outline around him.

The NYMEX folks would tell a clerk to ask a broker where the market was for an expired contract.

Location: NYMEX

The Prank: After a contract expired, you would tell a clerk or even a broker to see where that market was on the contract that just expired.

"So for example we are trading may crude oil now. Whenever that expires you would tell the clerk to see where that market is.  They would go ask and everyone would just make fun of them.  It was so childish but it was great," a former clerk told us.
