Best French Restaurants 2x1

Elegant, rustic, and exquisite — French cuisine both intimidates and inspires diners around the world.

Adaptations of French cooking here in the States have garnered no shortage of recognition. Le Bernardin, New York's high-end seafood restaurant helmed by Chef Eric Ripert, recently topped our list of the 45 Best Restaurants In America. In fact, 11 French restaurants secured spots.

For the list, we looked at five notable restaurant rankings compiled by food critics, diners, and experts, and combined these rankings to create the ultimate list of the Best Restaurants. (You can read our complete methodology and see numerical scores here).

We pulled the top French restaurants from our list, and ranked them here so you can see the best places to get your foie gras on in America.

Bon appétit!

11. Galatoire's

209 Bourbon St., New Orleans, LA

Chef: Michael Sichel

Debuting at No. 37 on Business Insider's list, Galatoire's emphasizes French culture and tradition from its French Quarter kitchen.

Chef Sichel spent more than 13 years honing his skills in Provence, France. He brings some New Orleans Cajun cooking to the table as well with signature dishes like the seafood-okra gumbo and the chicken creole.

10. Le Pigeon

738 E Burnside St., Portland, OR

Chef: Gabriel Rucker

You can't go to Le Pigeon and not order its namesake dish, which is served with blood sausage, cipollini, asparagus, and egg yolk. Or try some other dishes from their $75-to-$95 prix fixe menus.

Le Pigeon scored the No. 36 spot on our list.

9. Chez Panisse

1517 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley, CA

Chef: Alice Waters

Chez Panisse took a dip on BI's ranking this year (from No. 9 to No. 28), but this neighborhood bistro remains distinguished for its dedication to a "good, clean, and fair" food economy and for growing the slow food movement.

Chef Waters and friends opened its doors in 1971 and named the restaurant after Honoré Panisse, a character in a 1930s movie trilogy about waterfront life in Marseille, France.

The Penthouse Atop The Woolworth Building Will Be Priced At A Record $110 Million

woolworth building lower manhattan

Manhattan’s famous Woolworth Building — once the tallest skyscraper in the world — could soon be home to a nine-story penthouse valued at $110 million, according to Bloomberg News.

The upper floors of the 58-story Woolworth Building in Lower Manhattan are being converted into 34 luxury apartments by developer Alchemy Properties. Plans show that the ceilings will range in height from 11 to 14 feet, and residents will have their own separate lobby and elevators (the rest of the tower consists of office space).

The penthouse apartment will be at the pinnacle of the tower, and will no doubt have breathtaking views of the city. Its staggering nine-figure price tag also makes it the most expensive condominium in downtown Manhattan's real estate history, according to Bloomberg.

So what makes it worth the price? The nearly 9,000-square-foot, four-bedroom penthouse will have nine floors, its own private elevator, and a 584-square-foot terrace. There’s also a library, wine cellar, and a private observation deck.

Bloomberg reports that sales for the building are scheduled to take place in fall of 2014, with new tenants moving into the luxury residence in 2016 once construction is complete. There will be a range of condos hitting the market, with prices starting at $3.5 million for a 1,209-square-foot apartment on the 44th floor to the $110 million penthouse.

The Woolworth Building was completed in 1913 and is 792 feet tall. It was the tallest building in the world until 1930, when a nearby tower on 40 Wall Street was built, followed closely by the Chrysler Building (1930) and the Empire State Building (1931).

Though the Woolworth Building’s $110 million penthouse is pricey, it’s not the most expensive home to ever be listed in New York City. The Residence at River House was listed for $130 million before it was taken off the market, and an Upper East Side mansion was listed for $114 million in December of last year.

Looks like nine-figure apartments in New York City could be the new norm.

How 9 Incredibly Successful People Define Success

$

richard branson

We write lotsofstoriesaboutsuccess here at Business Insider, but we don't always agree on its definition.

Merriam-Webster defines it as "the fact of getting or achieving wealth, respect, or fame," but this interpretation doesn't feel complete.

With that in mind, we researched what foremost authors, inventors, and entrepreneurs consider success to be.

Read on to see how Richard Branson, Maya Angelou, Deepak Chopra, and others define success.

Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington says that money and power aren't enough.

Huffington says that while we tend to think of success along two metrics — money and power — we need to add a third.

"To live the lives we truly want and deserve, and not just the lives we settle for, we need a Third Metric,"she says, "a third measure of success that goes beyond the two metrics of money and power, and consists of four pillars: well-being, wisdom, wonder, and giving."

Together, those factors help you to take care of your psychological life and truly be successful, or as the title of her new book suggests, "Thrive."

Legendary basketball coach John Wooden says it's a matter of satisfaction.

With 620 victories and 10 national titles, Wooden is the winningest coach in college basketball history.

But his definition is more about competing with yourself than the other guy:

"Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming," he said.

Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh says success is about living in accordance with your values.

"Your personal core values define who you are, and a company's core values ultimately define the company's character and brand," Hsieh writes in "Delivering Happiness," his memoir about building Zappos.

"For individuals, character is destiny," he says. "For organizations, culture is destiny."

Today is Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, in which it shows off the latest and greatest of what the company's been working on.

The newest software for your Mac desktops and laptops will be called OS X Yosemite, taking its name (just as its predecessor Mavericks did) from "beautiful places in California."

There's a lot of new stuff to get through, so let's get started.

Craig Federighi, Apple's SVP of Software Engineering, took the wraps off of OS X Yosemite on stage at WWDC.

He spent the first few minutes talking about its redesigned interface. Windows are now semi-transparent, and it really makes the screen pop against a cool background.

There's a "dark mode" that can make the interface less bright for those who'd rather not be distracted by it.

The 10 Most Expensive US Cities To Live In

$

Honolulu skyline

Affordability aside, America's costliest cities often have a lot to offer residents: Vibrant economies, diverse populations, interesting attractions and active social scenes.

But are those amenities worth such high living costs? "That's a highly subjective question," says Dean Frutiger, of the Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER). Costs alone cannot dictate the attractiveness of a place.

But knowing the numbers could help you make an informed decision about relocating to a pricey new city, he says. For example, a potential job may include a 20% raise if you move to a more expensive city, but given the higher living costs, that increase might actually be a pay cut in terms of purchasing power.

We identified ten pricey cities — five spots in California, four along the East Coast and one in Hawaii — using data on 308 urban areas collected by the C2ER. The organization's Cost of Living Index measures prices for housing, groceries, utilities, transportation, health care, and miscellaneous goods and services. We screened out cities with fewer than 50,000 people. And because we wanted to pinpoint specific cities, we omitted expensive counties with multiple large population centers, such as Orange County, Cal., and Nassau County, N.Y.

More From Kiplinger:

10. San Diego

Cost of Living: 30.0% above U.S. average

City Population: 1.3 million

Median Household Income: $63,990 (U.S.: $53,046)

Median Home Value: $477,800 (U.S.: $181,400)

The sun, surf and sand might be free in San Diego, but you pay a stiff price to live there. Housing costs are more than double the national average in this Southern California city. And while typically high household incomes help offset inflated living costs, you may have to hustle to find work in the area. The local unemployment rate of 6.9% remains a bit worse than the national average of 6.8%, as of March 2014, though the labor situation has improved since 2013.

Military and government workers may fare best, with about one-fourth of all local jobs related to defense, according to the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corp. Besides the federal government, Northrop Grumman, SAIC and Lockheed Martin are major area employers.

9. Los Angeles

Cost of Living: 30.4% above U.S. average

City Population: 3.9 million

Median Household Income: $49,745

Median Home Value: $470,000

Despite its glamorous image, the City of Angels is cursed with a combination of high costs and low incomes. Proving the television show right, the 90210 zip code boasts a high median household income of $130,071, but it only accounts for 8,486 households. On the other hand, the city as a whole has a typical household income that's 6.6% below the national level, and the percentage of the population living in poverty is 21.2%, compared with 14.9% for the U.S. Another negative: The unemployment rate remains markedly high at 8.0% (as of March 2014, compared with 6.8% for the U.S.).

8. Oakland, California

Cost of Living: 36.1% above U.S. average

City Population: 400,740

Median Household Income: $51,683

Median Home Value: $449,800

California home values prove precious with a state median of $383,900, more than double the national median, and Oakland is no exception. Though the local median home value is the lowest of all the Californian cities on this list, housing expenses are 116.3% above the national average. A two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment in Oakland rents for $1,678 a month, compared with the national average of $893. That burden is particularly heavy considering that the typical household income falls below the U.S. median. On the bright side, utilities cost 4.5% below the national average.

A Rare Look At The Ornate Interior Of The Woolworth Building

woolworth building lower manhattan

The nine-story penthouse at the iconic Woolworth Building in Lower Manhattan is expected to hit the market for a record $110 million.

The new unit is one of 34 apartments being developed by Alchemy Properties, with prices ranging from $3.5 million for a 1,200-square-foot apartment to the nearly 9,000-square-foot penthouse that will take up floors 50 to 58.

The development is particularly exciting since the famous building hasn’t undergone a major renovation since the 1970s. Originally built in 1913, the Woolworth Building has outlived its namesake (The Woolworth Company went out of business in 1997) and housed the Irving National Exchange Bank, Columbia Records, the Witkoff Group, and many others.

Photographer Martin Doudoroff recently got a rare glimpse inside the building's opulent lobby (visitors can also pay $15-$45 for a tour) and shared his snapshots of the atrium's  neo-Gothic details.

Two years ago, on May 19, 2012, Mark Zuckerberg tied the knot with his college sweetheart, Priscilla Chan.

The wedding was a surprise for all of the guests, who thought they were attending a medical school graduation party for Chan.

The couple met in line for the bathroom at a frat party 11 years ago. Now Chan has been dubbed the "first lady" of Facebook, and the pair have been extremely generous with their fortune.

Here's a summary of their time together, as told through their Facebook timelines.

Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg met in line for the bathroom at a Harvard party in 2003. Zuckerberg's fraternity, Alpha Epsilon Pi, was hosting a party and Chan, a sophomore from the Boston area, was there.

“He was this nerdy guy who was just a little bit out there,” Chan told The New Yorker. “I remember he had these beer glasses that said ‘pound include beer dot H.’ It’s a tag for C++. It’s like college humor but with a nerdy, computer-science appeal.”

When Zuckerberg took Chan out the first time, he told her he'd "rather go on a date with [her] than finish his take-home midterm," Chan told "Today's" Savannah Guthrie.

The Caipirinha (kai-per-REEN-ya) is Brazil’s national cocktail, which makes it perfect for World Cup parties this June.

For those wondering if they'd like the Caipirinha, the drink is similar to a Daiquiri (made with rum, sugar, and lime.) The major difference is that a Caipirinha uses a Brazilian liquor made from fermented sugarcane juice called cachaça (ka-SHAH-suh) that is similar to rum, as well as raw sugar.

With muddled limes, sugar, alcohol, and ice, this strong drink is simple and perfect for summer. Drink responsibly.Caipirinha cocktail graphic

19 Ways Rich People Think Differently Than The Average Person

$

polo match

According to Steve Siebold, what separates the rich from the rest of us isn't so much what they do.

It's how they think.

Siebold spent nearly three decades interviewing millionaires around the world, and boiled his findings down in "How Rich People Think," a book he describes as "so brutally honest it will shock some and inspire others."

In it, he touches on everything from beliefs about the root of all evil to faith in what drives the financial markets and what parents should teach their children to set them up for financial success.

Here, find out how the rich really think — and which of these mindsets you can apply to your own life.

Mandi Woodruff contributed reporting to this post.

Rich people believe poverty is the root of all evil

... while average people think MONEY is the root of all evil.

According to Siebold, there's a certain shame that comes along with "getting rich" in lower-income communities.

"The average person has been brainwashed to believe rich people are lucky or dishonest," he writes. "The world class knows that while having money doesn't guarantee happiness, it does make your life easier and more enjoyable."

Rich people think selfishness is a virtue

... while average people think selfishness is a vice.

"The rich go out there and try to make themselves happy. They don't try to pretend to save the world," Siebold told Business Insider.

The problem is that middle class people see that as a negative — and it's keeping them poor, he writes. "If you're not taking care of you, you're not in a position to help anyone else. You can't give what you don't have."

Rich people have an action mentality

... while average people have a lottery mentality.

"While the masses are waiting to pick the right numbers and praying for prosperity, the great ones are solving problems," Siebold writes.

"The hero [most people] are waiting for is maybe God, government, their boss, or their spouse. It's the average person's level of thinking that breeds this approach to life and living while the clock keeps ticking away."

The 12 Other Planets That Are Most Likely To Contain Life

$

Kepler22b artwork

Scientists on Monday reported they had discovered a rocky "mega-Earth" that expands the definition of planets beyond our solar system that could potentially host life.

The new type of planet, Kepler-10c, weighs 17 times as much as Earth. Researchers previously thought this kind of world could not exist since any planet that large would attract hydrogen gas, becoming a gas giant like Jupiter rather than a solid planet.

“Finding Kepler-10c tells us that rocky planets could form much earlier than we thought. And if you can make rocks, you can make life,” said Harvard-Smithsonian researcher Dimitar Sasselov in a media release.

Kepler-10c isn't the only potentially habitable (or inhabited) planet out there. The Planetary Habitability Laboratory run by the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo maintains a list of exoplanets that are most similar to Earth, taking size, mass, and distance from their host stars into consideration — factors that are likely to support liquid water and would be conducive to life as we know it.

The catalog does not guarantee that these planets host life but "lists the best candidates so far for potential habitable worlds and the objects of interest for the search of life outside the Solar System."

Here's a look at some of the top candidates from the catalog, ranked in order of Earth similarity.

12. Gliese-581d

Gliese-581d is one of five planets to be discovered orbiting red dwarf star Gliese 581. It is bigger than 581g, with a mass at least seven times Earth's and twice as big in size.

The planet orbits on the outer edge of the habitable zone and could be warm enough to support clouds, oceans, and rain.

11. Kepler 186f

One of the latest additions to the catalog is Kepler-186f, which is 450 light-years away and is the most Earth-like in size to be found in the habitable zone of its star.

The newly-found planet, described as "Earth's cousin," is about 10% larger than Earth and could have liquid water on its surface. That water may be frozen since it orbits the outer edge of the habitable zone. Its host star is also cooler and much smaller than our sun.

Scientists still don't know what Kepler 186f is made of, but think it could have a rocky surface like Earth. Ready to go?

10. Kepler-62f

Kepler-62f is the second potentially habitable planet found orbiting the sun-like Kepler 62, discovered April 18, 2013.

The planet is smaller than Kepler-62e at 1.41 times the radius of our planet.

Scientists think Kepler-62f could be rocky, based on observations of exoplanets that are similar in size.

14 Packing Hacks To Make Your Next Move As Painless As Possible

moving and packing up boxes in apartment

Everyone you know is probably moving right now.

That’s because April, May, and June are the highest traffic months of the year for moving thanks to mild weather and college kids finishing school and finding post-grad housing.

If you’re one of the countless people getting new digs this season, these 14 tips will make packing and unpacking less horrible.

Get free moving boxes. If you're not the type of person to save big boxes, ask friends and coworkers if they have any spare ones you can use. A lot of people break down boxes and keep them, and they would be more than happy for you to borrow them.

Furniture stores may also have a wide variety of box sizes for you to use. Ask if they recycle their boxes and if you can take them or buy them at a steep discount.

Take a picture of how your electronics are connected before unplugging. This way, you won’t need to try and remember what goes where, and it will be easy to see how everything connects once you've moved in.

Pack an overnight bag. It's common after a long day of moving to be too tired to unpack right away. Everyone should pack an overnight bag with toiletries, PJs, a change of clothes, and any electronics and cords you'll want immediately.

filling nail hole with soapFill nail holes with a bar of soap. This is a simple hack that easily covers up any small nail holes. Rub the soap (Dove soap works well) in small circular motions until the hole is completely filled in. Then take a wash cloth and lightly rub off any soap residue from around the hole.

This tip doesn’t work as well with painted walls, but it works shockingly well for plain white ones. You can see a full tutorial here.

Put the tools you'll need right away into a clear plastic box. This includes moving essentials like a box cutter, paper towels, trash bags, eating utensils, cookware, power strips, phone chargers, toilet paper, toolbox, etc. Using a clear bin will allow you to see everything that’s inside the box for easy access.

Wrap breakables in clothing. There's no need to go out and spend money on bubble wrap or paper. Instead, put socks inside glassware and wrap shirts and sweaters around plates and other delicate objects. This way you save money and pack items you would've had to pack anyways in one fell swoop.

Use sandwich bags for cords and screws. For those taking apart bigger objects like tables or beds, keep all the screws and nails in a labeled plastic sandwich bag that says "bed" or "dining room table" for quick assembly. The same goes for TV cords and cables.

Keep clothes on hangers for fast unpacking. There's no need to pack hangers and clothes separately — stick them in a wardrobe box or into your suitcase with the hangers still attached. You'll appreciate this especially when you can take out all the hangers and have your closet come together super fast.

moving and packing up boxes in apartmentPack boxes by room. Knowing what box belongs in which room negates the need to go searching for items in other boxes. Just be sure to label the boxes correctly.

Leave your clothing in drawers. A drawer is a box with no top — leave your shirts, pants, and underwear in the drawers and take them out of the dresser or table. Wrap the top with cling wrap to keep everything in place until you reach your new home and then just sick the drawers back where they belong.

Remember the physics of boxes. Pack small items in large boxes and large items in small boxes. The logic behind this is that heavy items are far more likely to come crashing through the middle of a large box. Also, pack heavier items at the bottom of the box and lighter items toward the top of the box.

Books are the major exception. If you fill a big box with a bunch of small books, the weight is going to add up and the box is going to be too heavy to carry. Use medium boxes instead.

Have any area rugs professionally cleaned before your move. They will return from the cleaners rolled, wrapped, and ready to be packed (plus, clean!).

empty apartmentPut a string underneath tape. Leave a little tail of string hanging out at the end of the tape as you pack your boxes. It’s an extra step, but this will allow you to simply yank the string and rip up the tape when you’re unpacking, saving you time and effort looking for scissors or box cutters.

Take pictures of your old home and new home all unpacked. If you’re renting, you should do this before and after moving in. That way if picky landlords or new tenants try to gouge your for a hole or a scratch, you’ll have a record of what the home looked like before and after.

June 4 marks the 25th anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square pro-Democracy protests that ended in bloodshed, and China has done its best to scrub the event from collective memory.

Ahead of Wednesday's anniversary, China has gone to great lengths to censor discussion about the tragedy in 1989, when Chinese troops killed unarmed civilians in the center of Beijing. (The exact death toll is in dispute, but some estimate that more than 1,000 pro-democracy protesters were killed.)

In an apparent effort to keep people from recalling the violence, China has taken the drastic measure of blocking access to Google in the country. The country has also taken measures to quell protestors themselves. For example, Chinese authorities arrested a well-known artist named Guo Jian after he created a diorama of Tiananmen Square covered in ground meat.

While Jian's diorama may have been disturbing, photographs from the actual protest are utterly heartbreaking. We've gathered some of more iconic images in recognition of the 25th anniversary.

The protests began in April of 1989, after the death of ousted General Secretary Hu Yaobang.

Many saw Hu as a reformer. He had the support of students, who wanted the Chinese government to continue his pro-market and pro-democracy policies.

Following Hu's official state funeral, some 100,000 students gathered in the Beijing's central square.

Startup and Tech Mixer is not your typical, boring, grab-a-bunch-of-business-cards and make small talk networking function.

Held on three floors at San Francisco's W Hotel, the barely year-old event is part conference with a dash of networking, an exhibition for new startups, with lots of alcohol thrown in. And, it's also a lot of fun.

"It's important to create an all-inclusive vibe," said Ari Kalfayan, who helped start the mixer a year ago with a few friends, having just 75 people showing up to the first event.

Now the event has certainly grown up, with Kalfayan telling Business Insider that the mixer on Friday hosted roughly 4,500 attendees, all mingling between speakers, bars, games, and yes, even a bounce house.

Just a short walk from Business Insider's West Coast offices is the W Hotel in the South of Market (SoMa) area.

It's in a pretty nice spot, right across the street from the Museum of Modern Art.

After a quick check-in and ticket scan — no paper here, it's EventBrite QR codes — we're in. Here's what people could expect.

Hitter Yearbook Typo

As the academic year winds to a close, many schools will release yearbooks to celebrate their students, teachers, and achievements throughout the year.

However, for some students yearbooks can be a source of humor and humiliation, as simple typos create entirely new meanings for their year-end sendoffs.

Through Reddit and local news reports, we've found some of the most cringeworthy examples of yearbook typos from around the country. Some are funny and some are mean, but all of them are certainly not what the author intended.

Warning: Some of these typos are not safe for work.

Her intentions were certainly in the right place.

Mom and Dad were just trying to say congrats!

Actually, flapjacks would make finals a lot better.
