The 12 Craziest (And Wrong) Apple Rumors Of All-Time (AAPL)

$

gold ipad mini touch ID

There’s a lot of money in writing about Apple rumors, but as Chris Rawson at TUAW pointed out in January, the vast majority of articles are not to be trusted.

As we approach the fall launch of the next iPhone, we thought it’d be fun to look back at some of the most outlandish iPhone rumors previously published — all due respect to those reporters who were fooled.

"Future Mac computers will feature unique screws that prevent tampering."

The Cult of Mac — among several other news sites — posted a bogus rumor in August 2012 from a throwaway Reddit account that said Apple was working on an asymmetric screw design that would effectively lock out tinkerers that wanted to play around inside their Mac computers. The rumor was later discovered to have been fabricated by a Swedish design company called Day4, and several Apple websites issued their respective mea culpas after that.

"Apple will announce a game controller in 2013."

In March 2013, citing "multiple developer sources," PocketGamer provided "confirmation" that Apple was in talks with game developers at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco about its plans to launch a "dedicated game controller ... ensuring plenty of games will support the joypad at launch."

Apple didn't release a game controller last year, and although Apple has a 2010 patent for a dedicated game controller (pictured here), it's not clear why Apple would ever do such a thing. (Veteran Apple reporter Jim Dalrymple quickly refuted this report soon after it was published.)

"The 2011 iPhone will be called 'iPhone 5.'"

Just about every single tech site got this rumor wrong in 2011. CNET was one of the few companies to insist on the name "iPhone 4S." The Verge editor-in-chief Josh Topolsky, then at Engadget, said the "iPhone 5" would be a "completely redesigned handset" that would launch in the summer. Instead, that year's iPhone was the 4S, not the 5, and the phone's hardware was not redesigned at all.

15 Phrases Coined By 'Seinfeld’ That We Use All The Time Today

$

Soup Nazi, Seinfeld

Seinfeld's pilot episode aired 25 years ago, on July 5th, 1989, yet it continues to be the most influential sitcom in TV history — not only for changing how we watched television and rewriting the playbook for every comedy that followed it, but also how this "show about nothing" expanded our vocabulary.

Nearly every episode of Seinfeld contains one word or phrase that we still weave into our day-to-day interactions. These are 15 of the best instances of how the show left a lasting mark on our lexicon.

"Low-Talker"

"The Puffy Shirt": Season 5, Episode 2

It's a situation every Seinfeld viewer has encountered: A person who talks so quietly that you can't understand them, yet you don't want to embarrass them or ask them to repeat themselves.

In most cases, a conversation with a low-talker leaves us wondering "Wait, what?" In Jerry's case, his chat with a low-talker ended with him wearing that embarrassing puffy shirt on The Today Show. "But I don't want to be a pirate!"

More from Rolling Stone: In Pics: 10 Great ‘Seinfeld’ Episodes

"Close-Talker"

"The Raincoats": Season 5, Episodes 18 and 19

A close-talker is the annoying cousin of a low-talker, and as portrayed by Judge Reinhold, Seinfeld's close talker gets uncomfortably right in the face of the person they're conversing with.

Forget about personal space; you can feel their hot breath as they're speaking to you. Luckily for Jerry and Elaine, they dump Aaron the close-talker on Seinfeld's parents, who don't seem to mind someone infringing on their individual proximity.

"Spongeworthy"

"The Sponge": Season 7, Episode 9

The contraceptive might have been pulled from the market, but the term Elaine coined continues to define men that just aren’t worth sleeping with.

After Elaine's beloved sponge is removed from pharmacies, she hoards up Manhattan's remaining supply while deliberating whether that episode's love interest is deserving of one of those last few sponges. If a dude isn't "spongeworthy," the long-term prospects aren't great. (Parody Twitter account @Seinfeld2000 would perhaps rebrand the word "Tinderworthy.")

New Jersey Chef Wants To Be The 'Jiro Dreams Of Sushi' Of Bread And Butter

Razza Pizza Artiginale bread and butter

"I aspire to be a sushi master of the bread and butter world. The 'Jiro Dreams of Sushi' of bread and butter."

That’s what Dan Richer —the James Beard Rising Star chef semi-finalist and owner of Razza Pizza Artiginale in Jersey City, NJ — recently told Liza de Guia at FoodCurated.com in an interview.

The New Jersey-native makes the comparison between his restaurant's bread and butter dish and the cuisine served by the best-known sushi chef in Japan to emphasize his commitment to using the best ingredients and serving at the right temperature.

Bread and butter costs $4 at Razza, which also serves pizzas and salads. While most restaurants toss bread on the table for free, Richer says his version is worth the extra bucks.

The New Jersey-native set out to master bread and butter, and believes that he has. His bread, served warm with a caramelized crust and delicate inside, perfectly pairs with a rich, lightly salted butter served at room temperature. The chef even claims it's possible to taste the “terroir,” or origin, of the butter.Razza Pizza Artiginale bread and butter“You can taste what the cows are eating in our butter, it’s ridiculous,” Richer says in the Vimeo video. The restaurant gets fresh, organic cream from a family-run farm in Chester County, Pa. that raises grass-fed cows. The cream is then gently fermented, giving it a “cheese-like tang” and a bright yellow color.Razza Pizza Artiginale bread and butterThe bread is almost like sourdough, but not with the “acidic, acid, vinegar thing going on,” Richer says. The bread is sized and shaped ideally for baking in a wood-fired oven, and the crust is perfectly caramelized and slightly sour.

Watch the beautiful video below, and check out more with the chef at FoodCurated.com.

11 Things You Can Do With Samsung's New Tablet That You Can't Do With The iPad

samsung galaxy tab s

There are tons of Android tablets out there, but few are equipped to take on the iPad. Samsung's recently released Galaxy Tab S, however, may be the best Android tablet you can buy.

Other than its super-slim design and gorgeous display, the Tab S comes with a handful of software features that allow you to do more than you can with an iPad.

Here's a quick look at what you can do with the Galaxy Tab S that you can't do with an iPad.

You can use your fingerprint to make payments or launch apps

The Galaxy Tab S comes with Samsung's fingerprint sensor in the home button. Since Samsung has partnered with PayPal, you can use your fingerprint to verify purchases rather than typing in a password.

Samsung's software lets you run more than one app side-by-side

Thanks to Samsung's Multi-Window Mode, you can open two apps and run them alongside one another on the home screen.

You can control your smartphone directly from the Galaxy Tab S

Samsung's SideSync feature, which lets you control your phone from the tablet, only works if you have a Galaxy S4, Galaxy S5, or Galaxy Note 3 smartphone. The feature is designed to make it easier to transfer files between your phone and tablet, but you can also use your tablet to make or answer phone calls. Making calls from your tablet seems a bit awkward, but the idea is that if your phone is in another room, you can still answer the call immediately without having to run to get it.

Manhattan's Skyline Will Look Dramatically Different By 2020

New York 2020 skyline YIMBY

Midtown Manhattan is already home to a huge number of skyscrapers, but the next generation of towers being built between 53rd Street and the south side of Central Park will be even taller.

One57 — the long-awaited, 90-story residential skyscraper that cost $1.4 billion to build — is almost finished, and Extell’s Nordstrom Tower will eventually rise a vertigo-inducing 1,775 feet (including the tower’s spire), making it the tallest residential building in the world.

There are also developments in the works at 111 West 57th St., 432 Park Ave., and 53 West 53rd St. that will dramatically change the skyline.

Armand Boudreaux at New York YIMBY, a website that covers architecture, construction, and real estate in New York City, recently created renderings that show how all these new buildings will change the look of Manhattan, and shared them with Business Insider (arrows and outlines are ours). Check them out below.

This is what the skyline will look like in 2020, facing south from the Central Park Zoo. Of these five buildings, the 90-story One57 (second from the right) is the most complete. It cost $1.4 billion to build, and developers are expected to gross about $2 billion in sales from the project. It's on target to be finished this year.
