The 10 Most Livable Cities In The World

$
0
0

vienna austriaThe Economist Intelligence Unit conducted a livability survey to determine which cities around the world "provide the best or worst living conditions."

Cities that tended to score the best on the survey were mid-size and located in wealthier countries with relatively low population densities. This environment, according to the report, "can foster a range of recreational activities without leading to high crime levels or overburdened infrastructure."

Out of the top 10 cities, seven are located in Canada or Australia, which have population densities of 3.40 and 2.88 people per square kilometer respectively. Finland and New Zealand, which also have high-ranking cities, have 16 people per square km. The global average is 46.65 people per square km, and the U.S. average is 32 people per sq km, according to the report.

Sixty-four cities scored above an 80% — which means they are considered to be "in the top tier of livability."

10. Auckland

Country: New Zealand

Auckland scored high on education (100) and healthcare (95.8).

One-third of the New Zealand population is located in Auckland, the "largest commercial center" in the country. Major industries in Auckland include tourism, marine architecture, and specialized manufacturing.

Additionally, 80% of the city is considered to be rural; subsequently rural development is another major industry.

9. Perth

Country: Australia

Perth scored high on education (100), healthcare (100), and infrastructure (100).

Perth is the capital and largest city of Western Australia. Mining and mineral industries are major parts of Perth's economy.

Additionally, Perth boasts an oil refinery, steel-rolling mill, alumina refinery, desalination plant, power station, and a nickel refinery, according to the Government of Western Australia.

8. Helsinki

Country: Finland

Helsinki scored well on stability (100) and healthcare (100).

Helsinki's major industries include food, metal and chemical processing, printing, textiles, clothing, and manufacturing of electrical equipment. Over 50% of Finland's imports go through Helsinki, although most goods are exported elsewhere.

Additionally, Helsinki has grown into a major European startup hub. And, in 2013, the gaming sector in Finland recorded a combined revenue of approximately 1 billion.

Steve Johnson LinkedIn

Steve Johnson, LinkedIn’s VP of user experience, is the guy in charge of designing the site's look, feel, and function.

Naturally, he's a LinkedIn whiz, and in a recent interview he shared his favorite tip for members: Don't be afraid to show your personality.

"LinkedIn profiles aren’t like the printed resumes of old," he says, "You can bring your professional story to life. We are giving you the opportunity to share your career aspirations, showcase your unique character and what you bring to the culture of your company."

You can give your profile some extra flair by adding professional photos from events or conferences, writing about your experience more in-depth with LinkedIn's publishing platform, seeking out recommendations from past colleagues that highlight more than just your day-to-day duties, listing volunteer experiences, or uploading a presentation that you're proud of.

Johnson also explained that he's personally driven by the idea of helping people achieve their aspirations through empowerment.

"As a child, I grew up with practically nothing so I understand what it’s like to feel that your dreams are out of reach," he says. "I want the LinkedIn experience to make our members feel that they are taking a step closer to their goals and aspirations. When they are building something like their LinkedIn profile, I want people to feel proud of what they’ve created and empowered to make their dreams a reality."

Optometrist

One of the main reasons people go to college and graduate school is to find a high-paying job when they're done.

But a college education and a prestigious job do not necessarily mean you'll be raking in the cash.

Some of these gigs, like being an architect or an optometrist, pay well below what you might expect.

Using data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on the mean salary of full-time civilian workers, we've picked out some of the most prestigious jobs that have surprisingly low earnings.

Optometrists

Average annual earnings: $111,640

Job description: They perform eye exams and make just a fraction as much as some medical professionals. For comparison, the average physician earns $191,880 a year, and dentists, who undergo a similar amount of training, earn $168,870.

Educational requirements: A bachelor's degree is required, followed by a four-year stint in optometry school to earn an O.D. A residency sometimes follows that for those who want to pursue a particular specialty.

Biomedical engineers

Average annual earnings: $93,960

Job description: These engineers work on building solutions for problems in biology and medicine.

Educational requirements: Some undergraduate programs offer degrees in biomedical or biomechanical engineering, but other paths include a more general engineering degree and a master's focusing on biomedical applications.

Chemists

Average annual earnings: $77,740

Job description: Chemists study the properties, structures, and reactions of substances and develop new products or processes for making them.

Educational requirements: A bachelor's is the minimum, but research jobs require a master's or Ph.D.

The Rich Kids of Instagram have been keeping busy this summer.

The two-year-old Tumblr blog aggregates photos from the world's richest young Instagram users, but nothing is too outlandish or flashy for these kids— pictures of bottles of Champagne, diamond-encrusted Rolexes, and private yachts are posted almost daily. It's next-level humblebragging

The anonymous creator of the Rich Kids of Instagram blog partnered up with author Maya Sloan to release "Rich Kids of Instagram: A Novel" last month. The novel is a fictionalized work based on the antics of Instagram's real-life rich kids.

We took a look at the Rich Kids of Instagram earlier this year, but we're checking back in to see what they've been doing to wrap up their summers. We weren't shocked to discover they have been vacationing in the most exotic locales, showering club-goers with cash, and drinking lots of sparkling wine.

If you live in a major metropolitan city (and even if you don't), you're likely familiar with Uber. It's an ridesharing service that's available at the tap of a button, bringing a car to your location.

Uber's available in 44 countries on six continents. Since hiring David Plouffe, Obama's former campaign manager, the startup is looking to expand its reach even further.

If you've never considered using Uber to get around your city, fear not. It's an incredibly easy process. In just a few steps, you can be on your way from point A to point B in a private car.

Download the Uber app.

Uber is a free app, available in the Apple App Store, Google Play, and in BlackBerry's App World.

Sign up (it's free).

Uber makes it incredibly easy for new users to sign up. You'll need to enter your name, email address, phone number, and your credit card information. You aren't paying for anything—yet.

Choose your car type.

Uber's different rides come with different price tags, and can fit different numbers of people. Check to see what's available in your area. Meet 10 People Who Say They've Been Abducted By Aliens

Sticky Little Legs

According to a recent HuffPo/YouGov poll, 48% of Americans believe  it's possible that UFOs have visited and observed our planet. Only 35% of those polled totally spurned such an idea.

Additionally, 10% of the U.S. population say they have seen an alien space craft with their own eyes. And while the number of people who claim to have been taken by aliens is much lower, they do exist, and more come forward every year.

Who are these all these people? Where do they come from? What are their stories?

Over the past few years, photographer Steven Hirsch has attempted to find out just that. His series, titled "Little Sticky Legs" (named after one of his subjects descriptions of an alien), is a series of portraits of purported alien abductees, along with anecdotes and drawings from the subjects.

Hirsch initially started photographing his subjects after covering a convention of self-proclaimed abductees in Connecticut. "The experience was mind-boggling and stuck with me for decades," he told Business Insider.

He traveled the Southwest, where many people claiming to be alien abductees live, to continue the project. Hirsch says southwestern landscapes affect the way people think. "It’s trippy out there. In New York, you have no sense of the universe, but in the Southwest you can’t avoid the sky; you get a sense of scale of and intimacy with the universe," he says.

Hirsch continues the project today, going out to the Southwest every year. You can see more portraits, as well as drawings and anecdotes on his site.

"I've got to meet numerous types of beings. I've met Salamander beings and I've met Greys, various different types of Greys. I've also met the Blue Arcturians which are incredible. They all have their own personalities and their own purposes... I've never yet ever met a being that was malevolent. I've never experienced unconditional love 'til I've met them face to face and had conscious contact with them." -Cynthia

"On November 5, 1975, me and six other men were leaving work in a remote forest and we encountered an unidentified flying object and I was taken aboard. My co-workers were accused of murdering me and making up a story to cover up for why I was missing. The state police gave them a lie detector test, and even though they passed, ever since then it's been one sort of attempt to explain it away anyway they could. If you're going to pass judgement on it, get the facts first." -Travis

"I'm telling them, 'I want to stay, I don't want to go.' I start crying. I say, 'I like it here. I belong.' And they said, "No, it's not your time. You have to help save this planet Earth." That's all I remember." -Stephen

This year, close to 3,500 Zagat users and self-proclaimed burger aficionados visited the restaurant-rating website to review the top hamburgers in 16 major cities across North America.

To come up with the "Overall" score, participants rated their city's most popular burgers on flavor, ingredients, and value. The scores are based on Zagat's 30-point scale.

AUSTIN AREA: Mighty Fine Burgers Fries Shakes — The Classic with Cheese

5601 Brodie Ln #1300, Sunset Valley, Texas

The 11 Best Dog Breeds

$
0
0

Dogs are the best.

Incredibly loyal, they comfort, protect, and love their humans unconditionally, making dogs superior to any other pet out there.

But not all dogs are created equal. In celebration of National Dog Day, we ranked the 11 best dog breeds, based on factors including health, personality, and overall popularity.

11. Portuguese Water Dogs

Bo Sunny ObamaPortuguese water dogs were originally bred to herd fish, retrieve lost tackle or broken nets, and act as couriers from ship to shore.

They’re good for people with allergies and make excellent companions since they are loving, independent, intelligent, and easy to train.

Portuguese water dogs also enjoy being petted and are friendly with strangers. Just be warned that like many larger dogs, boredom can cause them to become destructive.

10. Newfoundland Dogs

newfoundland dogKnown as “nature’s babysitter,” Newfoundland Dogs are the absolute sweetest. Perhaps the best-known Newfoundland is the fictional Nana from “Peter Pan,” who was so wonderful with children.

These gentle giants are highly loyal and easy to train, and are legendary for their docile temper.

Newfoundland dogs are also strong swimmers, and the breed was trained to rescue people from drowning — one dog even famously saved Napoleon Bonaparte.

9. Maltese

maltese puppyOne of the most ancient of the toy breeds, Maltese dogs were bred to be sweet and adoring of their owners. The Greeks even erected tombs for their Maltese dogs, and in Elizabethan times, they were called “The Comforter” because it was believed they could relieve pain and cure illness.

Maltese dogs are also extremely hypoallergenic, with silky coats that don’t shed.

And because of their size, these dogs are good for apartment living, too.

8. Golden Retrievers

golden retrieverGoldens are sweet, loyal, and incredible companion dogs. They’d rather be sleeping at your feet then running around outside without you.

They’re also very even-tempered, especially with small children. Goldens make great service and comfort dogs because of their friendly and tolerant attitudes.

Plus they were bred to retrieve ducks and other fowl for hunters, so if you like playing fetch, this is the dog for you.

7. Huskies

husky dogsSiberian huskies are stunning animals, with their thick fur coat and piercing eyes. Most people who choose a Husky do so for their extraordinary beauty.

Huskies are good natured dogs who are affectionate with children. They shed minimally, except for twice a year when they blow out their coat, and don’t have the typical “dog odor” that bigger breeds tend to have.

Huskies are not considered a great breed for first-time dog owners, since they need a lot of attention, exercise, and are very good as escaping and running away.

6. Poodles

black poodles at sunsetPoodles get a bad rap. But they’re easy to train since they’re so intelligent, and are lively, fun-loving, and loyal family dogs.

Poodles can be attention seekers, so don’t be surprised if this people-oriented breed is constantly with you.

They’re also protective of their families and homes, and can become aggressive with people outside the family or with other dogs.

5. Beagles

beagle dogBecause of their intelligence, Beagles are used by law enforcement at airports to sniff baggage for items that are not permitted. Due to their friendly nature and appearance, Beagles don’t worry passengers.

This breed also has a lack of inherited health problems, and an even temper which is good for families and small children.

The most common reason Beagles are abandoned or turned over to the pound is because their owners couldn’t stand their howling. This can be controlled by training your dog early to avoid excessive barking.

4. German Shepherds

german shepherd dogA relatively new breed (they date back to 1899), German Shepherds are exceptional animals: Courageous, obedient, incredibly loyal, and eager to learn.

German Shepherds are very intelligent too, and excel at most anything they’re trained to do. They’re usually used as service dogs and police dogs to protect officers and locate drugs or human remains.

German Shepherds love their humans so much that they will suffer from separation anxiety, and can become destructive when bored alone at home.

3. Pembroke Welsh Corgis

corgi family portrait bestCorgis have a cult-like following mainly due to their playful and sweet personalities. According to Welsh mythology, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi was even the transportation mode of choice for fairies.

Though they can be shy with strangers, Corgis are good with children and have a strong desire to please their owners.

They’re also one of the silliest-looking dogs, with huge ears, a long torso, and a big butt. Just monitor their food intake closely since this breed is prone to overeating.

2. Labrador Retrievers

Labradors in the back of a car black and yellow labsThere’s a reason why Labs are the most popular breed in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, as well as here in the U.S. They are devoted and obedient and have even temperaments that make them good with both children and other animals.

Bred to be eager to please and playful companions, Labs are smart and commonly chosen as guide dogs and service dogs for blind or autistic individuals.

They also make understanding therapy dogs, and can be trained to aid law enforcement and other official agencies by screening and detection work.

1. Mixed Breeds

Mutts dogs for adoptionNo matter what mix of breeds, mutts are awesome. Mixed-breeds are believed to have less genetically inherited health problems than purebreds, according to veterinarian Dr. Sarah Ward Fatula.

Plus, if you adopt your mixed-breed from the shelter, not only will they already be spayed/neutered, microchipped, and up to date with vaccines, but you’ll also be helping with the pet overpopulation problem.

To find a shelter near you, visit the ASPCA’s website.

See What Has Become Of 8 Olympic Host Cities After The Games Left Town

$

Igman Ski jumps

Since the inception of the modern Olympics, there have been 49 winter and summer games held in 41 different cities around the globe. Some were great successes. Others, not so much.

Researchers have known for years that cities that host large sporting events like the Olympics generally spend more money and make less than anticipated. And investing in an Olympic Games won't necessarily lead to long-term economic growth or improved infrastructure.

Photographers and artists Jon Pack and Gary Hustwit set out to document what exactly happens when the games are over, and discovered varying answers.

Pack and Hustwit explored and photographed relics and remains of once-new Olympic features in 13 cities. Their photos, collected in a new book entitled "The Olympic City," show the varied remnants of Olympic Games gone by.

"We're interested in the idea of government-approved spending — and these are huge amounts of money — to build massive structures, some of it temporary, all to host an event that will only last a couple of weeks ... Are [the people] benefiting from having been a part of the Olympics? Are the games a point of pride or regret?" Pack explains.

Some places faired well, standing the test of time by adapting to new roles. Other structures fell to shambles after years of disuse. Both aspects, rebirth from ingenuity and death from poor planning, are documented in the series, which acts as a interesting behind-the-scenes look at the games we know and love.

Many pieces of architecture originally created for an Olympic event have been gracefully integrated into the landscape. Here, the Montjuïc Communications Tower still stands in Olympic Park in Barcelona. Created for the 1992 Summer Games, the structure was built to beam TV coverage out to the world and was meant to look like an arm holding an Olympic torch. Today, it continues to send out TV signals and remains a striking part of the city skyline.

Other structures were repurposed. These eighteen 16-story buildings were created to house athletes at the the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, though only a few of them were used, due to the US-led boycott of the games. They have since been made into permanent apartments for state employees.

Similarly, the Olympic Village from the 1960 Rome Summer Olympics was also converted into full time residences, though they have recently fallen into slight disrepair.

17 Business Etiquette Rules Every Professional Needs To Know

handshake

Professional social situations can be awkward. And, unfortunately, many people wind up making fools of themselves because they don’t understand that etiquette rules in business differ slightly from those in standard social settings.

In her book "The Essentials Of Business Etiquette," Barbara Pachter writes about the specific rules people need to understand in order to conduct and present themselves appropriately in professional social settings.

Here are the most important tips on how to introduce yourself, how to dress, and what to order at restaurants from Pachter's book.

Always stand when you're being introduced to someone.

"Standing helps establish your presence. You make it easy for others to ignore you if you don’t stand. If you are caught off guard and cannot rise, you should lean forward to indicate that you would stand, if you could."

Source: "The Essentials Of Business Etiquette"

Always say your full name.

In a business situation, you should use your full name, but you should also pay attention to how others want to be introduced.

If your name is too long or difficult to pronounce, Pachter says you should consider changing or shortening it. Or you should consider writing down the pronunciation of your name on a business card and giving it to others.

Source: "The Essentials Of Business Etiquette"

Always initiate the handshake if you’re the higher-ranking person or host.

In today's workplace, the host or the higher-ranking person, regardless of gender, should extend their hand first, she writes. "If the higher-ranking person fails to do so immediately — often because of gender confusion — the lower-ranking person should extend his or her hand without missing more than a beat."

Either way, the handshake must happen. "In the United States, the handshake is the business greeting. If you want to be taken seriously, you must shake hands and shake hands correctly."

Amazon announced on Monday that it was buying Twitch, a site devoted solely to video-game-related live-streaming content, for $970 million.

That might seem like a ton of money. But the video games are also a spectator sport, and a lot of people are making serious cash by playing in tournaments and getting lucrative sponsorships from computer parts makers.

They also make money streaming their practice sessions on Twitch.

e-Sports Earnings has ranked the 100 players with the highest overall earnings from competitive gaming.

There are more than 150 gamers who have earned over $100,000 in prize money.

Sophia Amoruso, Nasty Gal, hi-resBusiness books are notorious for being loaded with MBA lard, trotting out "key takeaways" like "take risks,""build a great team," and "don't be afraid to fail."

But the ones worth reading ditch the platitudes in favor of instructive anecdotes — which is why they so often come from execs who have lived through it.

From fashion startups to automotive empires, here are the best leadership books from people who have led their companies to success.

"The Hard Thing About Hard Things"

What is the hard thing about hard things? That they don't have a formula, says Ben Horowitz.

"Hard things are hard because there are no easy answers or recipes," he writes. "They are hard because your emotions are at odds with your logic. They are hard because you don’t know the answer and you cannot ask for help without showing weakness."

Horowitz, now one of the most sought-after investors in the game, used to be CEO of software management company Opsware before it was acquired by HP for $1.6 billion.

Bonus: Horowitz shows off his ridiculously extensive knowledge of rap lyrics — quoting Kanye West and DMX before the close of the opening chapter.

More than your average business memoir, the book is a distillation of Sloan's experiences and thoughts around how to steer a massive organization. It serves as a treatise on decentralization and the structure of the modern corporation.

13 Etiquette Rules To Remember Next Time You Fly

$

airplane aisle crowd

The reality of air travel in the 21st century is that flying economy is unpleasant.

Airlines are cutting service and packing planes to improve razor thin profit margins, while flights aren't getting any shorter. And customers are feeling the pain: A United Airlines flight was recently forced to divert after two passengers got in a fight over a gadget called the Knee Defender that stopped one from reclining his seat.

If you don't have the cash or the points to secure an upgrade, there are ways to make flying more pleasant, but they depend on everyone's cooperation.

We've put together a list of 13 basic rules of etiquette, based on our own flying experiences and some expert opinions. Follow them, and your next flight might just be bearable — as long as everyone else follows them, too.

Alex Davies wrote an earlier version of this story.

#1 Remember how security works.

This is all about thinking a few steps ahead, so you get through the screening process as quickly as possible.

Before you get to the x-ray machine, take everything out of your pockets. Put it all in your bag, or the pocket of a coat that you'll put through the machine.

When you belongings come out, collect them quickly and move to a spot where you’re not blocking anyone. Then you can put your shoes and belt on.

#2 Don't hog the overhead bin.

In the era of checked bag fees, carry-on space is at a premium. If you have two carry-on bags, keep the smaller one at your feet.

And, as the flight attendants will likely remind you, don't take up someone else's space by putting your bag in the bin horizontally.

#3 Be kind to the flight attendants.

Flight attendants didn't create the rules about stowing tray tables, wearing seat belts, and restoring seatbacks before landing. Giving them a hard time is obnoxious, and can delay your takeoff.

At least the FAA ended its longstanding ban on the use of certain electronic devices during takeoff and landing late last year.

roman abramovich and sofia abramovichRoman Abramovich lives an enviable life. The Russian oligarch and billionaire owner of Chelsea football club is #133 on Forbes' World Billionaires list with a net worth of $9.5 billion, and has some seriously awesome toys, including a $1 billion super yacht.

So it should come as no surprise that his 19-year-old daughter Sonya, one of the five children he has with ex-wife Irina, also lives a pretty pampered life.

According to The Daily Mail, Sonya (who goes by Sofia) has an Instagram account where she posts pictures of her home in the English countryside, stables of horses, and scads of gorgeous travel photos.

Though Sofia seems like any other teenage girl who loves shopping, boys, and "Gossip Girl," she also posts updates of incredible experiences like attending a Beyoncé and Jay-Z concert and going to Chelsea Football matches.

Keep reading to get a glimpse of what life is like for the teen daughter of an oligarch.

Even though her father is worth over $9 billion, Sofia lives a fairly quiet life in the English county of Hampshire.

Like many teens, Sofia loves her selfies.

She’s not a huge fan of school and studying. This photo's caption says: "Basically screwed #maths #alevel #failing #tangraph #whaisthis #completebull #killmenow #whydoievenbother"

Her home in England — where she lives with her mother and two younger siblings — is gorgeous.

Just look at that backyard.

She loves posting pictures from recent vacations, like her latest visit to St. Tropez in the South of France.

They also went to the Maldives earlier this year. (And when they travel, her family obviously flies private.)

Sofia loves horses and competes in international show-jumping competitions. She recently competed at the Longines Global Champions Tour at Horse Guards Parade in London.

Her family raises horses and has a stable on their estate.

In addition to horses, Sofia has three dogs and a cat. Here’s her German Shepherd with her mom, Irina.

The family also owns a Labradoodle and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

But probably the best thing about Sofia’s Instagram are her #TBTs of her father, Roman Abramovich.

Aww. You can see more pictures at Sofia’s Instagram.

iPhone 6 concept photo

It's almost fall, which means tech companies are gearing up to release their newest smartphones, tablets, and wearable gadgets in time for the holiday season.

Most manufacturers haven't even unveiled these devices yet, but we already have a pretty clear idea of what the most popular smartphones and tablets for 2015 will look like.

It's important to keep in mind that these devices haven't been confirmed yet, so there's a chance that some of the phones and tablets on this list may not make it to market in 2014.

However, based on numerous rumors and leaks over the past few months, we feel strongly enough to include them in this list.

The iPhone 6

Apple's next smartphone, presumably called the iPhone 6, is probably the most anticipated gadget of 2014. The phone is expected to come out at the end of September, and Apple will reportedly unveil it on Sept. 9.

Based on various leaks and rumors, it seems like the iPhone 6 be a noticeable upgrade from the iPhone 5s. The iPhone 6 will reportedly come with a larger, sharper 4.7-inch screen and a completely new design that looks similar to the iPad Air than an iPhone.

An even larger 5.5-inch iPhone

It's been widely reported that Apple will unveil two new smartphones this year — one with a 4.7-inch display and another with a 5.5-inch screen. It's unclear if they'll both launch at the same time, however. Some reports have indicated that Apple has run into production issues with the 5.5-inch iPhone, hinting that it could be released in late 2014 or early 2015.

The second-generation iPad Air

In years past, Apple has unveiled its new iPads in October, leading many to believe that an update to the iPad line is coming this fall, too. We haven't heard too much about the second-gen iPad Air, but a report from Korean news source ET News suggests Apple may already be working on its components.

If the report holds up to be true, we could expect to see a new iPad with the same design as the first Air, a faster processor than Apple's current tablet, and a better camera. French blog Nowhereelse.fr also posted a leaked image that claims to show the ipad Air 2.
