12 Quotes That Take You Inside The Mind Of Billionaire Mavs Owner Mark Cuban

$

mark cuban champMark Cuban always seems to come out on top.

His first job was tending bar in Dallas. Then he took a gig as a computer salesman. He was fired — and he realized he "was never going to be a very good employee."

So he started his first company, MicroSolutions, which he sold for $6 million.

He did even better with his next company — about 1,000 times better. He founded Broadcast.com and sold it to Yahoo for almost $6 billion.

Almost immediately, Cuban sold all of his Yahoo stock netting $2 billion in cash for himself. Weeks later, the market crashed.

Since then, Cuban has continued to work and invest. He owns the Dallas Mavericks and a cable channel, plus he's all over the media — taking bites out of would-be entrepreneurs on ABC's pitch show "Shark Tank" and lighting up the conference circuit.

Cuban is known for saying what other people only think. Here are some of our favorite quotes.

On making a billion dollars

"The billion was, 'I can't f---ing believe it.' Literally, I was sitting in front of a computer, naked, hitting the refresh because we were close — waiting until my net worth hit that billion when the stock price got to a certain point, and then I kinda screamed and jumped around and then got dressed."

[Business Insider, August 2014]

On his approach to each day

"My dad says it over and over, 'Today's the youngest you’re ever going to be. You've got to live like it. You've got to live young every day.' And that's what I try to do."

[Business Insider, March 2014]

On his management style

"I micromanage you until I trust you. It's a back and forth continually… If I send you 30 emails I expect quick responses and direct action. Then we'll go to weekly reports. And I want the bad news first. I want to read, 'God dammit, we lost this sale.' I want to know the setbacks so that I can help you."

This Professor Lives In A 6x6-Foot Dumpster, The World's Smallest House

dumpster jeff wilson 2

Jeff Wilson lives in a dumpster.

It's not what it sounds like: Wilson is an environmental science professor and dean at Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Texas, and he's working with his students and a team of experts to transform that dumpster into a sustainable home that costs under $10,000.

He uses the alter-ego "Professor Dumpster."

"Professor Dumpster will be spending one year in a dumpster that is approximately 6 feet x 6 feet, or about 1% the size of the average new American home. Professor Dumpster, in his bid to become part of the 'new 1%' will strive to use 1% the water, 1% the energy, and create 1% the waste of the average American home,"reads The Dumpster Project website.

We first came across Wilson over at The Atlantic, where they describe his downsizing from a 2,500-square-foot house to a 500-square-foot apartment and finally to the 36-square-foot dumpster. For reference, that's 152 square feet less than the self-proclaimed "world's smallest house" in London, 204 square feet less than a typical $30,000 tiny house, and 92 square feet smaller than the tiny house in which a Business Insider reporter spent the weekend with her mom.

We were so intrigued by Wilson's project that we reached out to Team Dumpster to see if it had photos to share. We've published them here with the group's permission.

The Dumpster Project will be completed in three phases, starting when Wilson took occupancy in February 2014: camping in a bare-bones dumpster (shown here); living in a dumpster "home," with additions such as storage and a bed; and then fine-tuning the dumpster into the ultimate sustainable home.

Earlier in stage two, the project's current stage, a fake floor was installed to store Wilson's belongings and limited wardrobe.

Later in this stage, the dumpster will be hooked up to electricity and water. Measurements will be taken of how much of these resources Wilson requires to be comfortable.

Island of Eigg, Scotland

Need a break from all the chatter about Thursday's Scottish independence referendum?

Reuters photographer Paul Hackett recently published some beautiful pictures of Scotland's Island of Eigg, located about off the west coast. The island is special because it's home to the "the first completely wind, water, and sun-powered electricity grid in the world," according to Hackett.

Fewer than 100 people on the island, which runs almost entirely on renewable energy.

Let's have a look around, shall we?

Welcome to the Island of Eigg, located in the Scottish Inner Herbrides, off the country's north-west coast.

Eigg is sandwiched between the smaller isle of Muck and the larger island of Rum, pictured in the background on the right in this photo.

The island has an area of 12 square miles, which is equal to the size of around 5,800 American football fields.

billionaire census report 2014 wealth map

Wealth-X and UBS are out with their latest Billionaire Census, and this year’s results provide eye-opening insights into the lives of the world’s elite.

There are now 2,325 billionaires in the world, who control a total wealth of $7.291 trillion, or 4% of global GDP. Roughly 19% of that wealth is held in cash, 5% in assets like art collections, yachts or property, and the rest is in banking and investments.

Europe beats North America for sheer number of billionaires, with 775 in Europe versus 609 in North America. But the two regions were neck and neck for total wealth: Europe's billionaires had $2.375 trillion, whereas North America's held $2.371 trillion.

Asia had the third biggest population of billionaires with a total of $1.41 trillion in wealth, followed by the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, and lastly the Pacific.

billionaire countries wealth x billionaire reportWhen it came to individual countries, the United States continued to have the largest population of billionaires, followed by China, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Russia.

In fact, the US population of billionaires exceeded the populations in China, the UK, Germany, and Russia combined. But it’s worth noting that with current projections, China will overtake the US for most billionaires by 2027.

8 Men’s Fashion Trends You'll See This Fall

$

0

While the fashion world is already looking ahead to Spring 2015, we're here to prepare you for Fall 2014.

The majority of fall menswear collections that were shown at New York Fashion Week last spring had muted color palettes and resurrected past trends, from puffy jackets to fair isle prints. Sweatpants even made their way onto the runway.

Here are eight trends to watch out for this season.

Down-Filled, Quilted Jackets

men's fall fashion puffy jacketPuffy, quilted coats will be back in style this fall and winter. Top designers like Alexander Wang, Balenciaga, and Calvin Klein sent iterations of the down-filled jacket down the runway.

Try to choose a style that is as streamlined as possible so you don’t look like a marshmallow (or time traveler from the early aughts), and pair it with slim-fitting jeans and sneakers.

Because it’s a sporty look, avoid wearing this style of jacket with suits or fancier attire.

Shearling Jackets

men's fall fashion shearlingAnother popular outerwear trend for this season will be shearling-lined coats that look like the classic bombardier jackets pilots wore during WWII.

While we saw a lot of these on the runway, no other designer was quite as into the shearling look as Belstaff, a brand from designer Martin Cooper that is popular in the motorcycle competition world.

The look is rugged and manly, but also best relegated to your weekend wear or worn on a chilly weekend getaway.

Flannel

men's fall fashion FlannelFlannel isn’t only for outdoorsy men — it also works in the city when you pair it with leather like the designers at Marc by Marc Jacobs, Band of Outsiders, McQ Alexander McQueen, and No. 21 all did.

It’s a versatile material that looks good whether it’s on shirts, outerwear, or cold-weather accessories. The more flannel the better this fall.

Big, Boxy Bags

men's fall fashion big bagsHandbags are not just for the ladies. The runways were chock full of large duffel bags — approximately carry-on sized — being held by models for Bally, Bottega Veneta, Brioni, Burberry, and Gieves & Hawkes.

Whether you’re going to the gym or on a business trip, these bags are smart accessories. Pick one that’s neither too small nor too big, and opt for a leather version instead of canvas since it will last longer and be more versatile.

Patterned Knits

men's fall fashion patterned knitsKnits are obviously going to make a comeback this fall, but the patterned knits and fair isle prints that we saw on the runway were an exciting departure from bland, boring sweaters.

Pair yours with a blazer or collared shirt underneath to make it look less like something your aunt bought you for Christmas. Layering is your friend — especially since the temperatures will be dropping soon, too.

If you're at a loss for where to start, J.Crew has some good options.

White And Black Everything

men's fall fashion black and whiteAside from a few pops of color, the Fall/Winter 2014 runways looked very muted and neutral. But the pairing that fashion houses seemed to love more than any other was the classic white and black combo.

Agi & Sam, Todd Snyder, Casely-Hayford, and Comme des Garçons all featured black and white outfits prominently in their collections. It’s an easy combination that any man can pull off, but if it feels too crisp for you, add a grey item or jeans to break up the look.

Turtlenecks

men's fall fashion turtleneckThis retro-classic has been gaining ground for a couple of years now in men’s fashion circles, and this year was no exception thanks to brands like AMI, Bally, DKNY, Ralph Lauren, and Topman Design.

Though most men are scared that a turtleneck will make them appear too feminine, it’s all about the way you wear it.

Pair a tailored, light-weight turtleneck with a blazer or bomber jacket to switch up your style, or layer a thick-knit turtleneck with a blazer (you can also wear it all on its own).

Sweatpants

men's fall fashion sweatpantsFor better or worse, sweatpants will be popular all season long if the runways at J.Crew, Sibling, Todd Snyder, and Band of Outsiders are any indication.

If you do want to take part in this trend, keep your look sporty but polished with nice sneakers or boots, a fitted-shirt, and top the look with either a casual blazer or jacket.

18 Photos Of Old Shanghai Being Demolished To Make Way For Modernization

$

001_P187 SHAfter living for decades in various parts of Asia, Canadian photographer Greg Girard moved to Shanghai, China, at the turn of the 21st century. It was a fortuitous time to move to the city. Shangahi had just begun to change rapidly, as a bustling economy, directive from the central government, and economic reforms spurred major development for the first time in 40 years.

The city’s ornate and seedy buildings began giving way to skyscrapers, residential towers, and squeaky clean development, as residents were forced out of dilapidated homes. Determined to capture the city before it disappeared, Girard began photographing the city’s old neighborhoods.

Over the course of eight years, Girard captured the ghosts of Shanghai — the century-old buildings that were demolished and those that remain. In recent years, more of an effort has been made to preserve Shanghai’s architectural heritage, though the damage has already been done.

Girard shared a number of photos from his project with us here, but you can see the rest in his book, "Phantom Shanghai," or on his website.

Shanghai has a blend of architectural styles, due to parts of the city being occupied by the French, British, and Americans during the 19th and early 20th century.

Buildings blending Western and Eastern design styles, from French Renaissance to Art Deco, make Shanghai one of the most unique-looking cities in the world.

After the Communist Party took over in 1949, development practically froze for nearly forty years.

The 19 Essentials That Every Gentleman Needs This Fall

$

0

stylish man jeans blazer sunglasses

When you were a child fall meant new school gear to start the season off fresh.

It's a little different for adults — no Trapper Keepers or freshly sharpened pencils — but freshness is still absolutely required.

To help you get set for the season, Business Insider put together a list of items that will put you in the right mind (and body) set to start anew.

We want you to look, feel, and think sharp, so this isn't just about the clothes, people.

It's about the gentleman.

Bomber jacket

Bomber jackets have that ultimate cool guy vibe to them, and they're one of those rare styles that's been all over the run way that also fits in your closet.

Get a great bomber jacket here for $570, or a cheaper alternative for $188 here.

Some dressed-up fall footwear

We're told that this autumn it's all about boots — Chukkas, Chelseas and Oxfords (the pair pictured are from Paul Evans).

And as it gets colder (but not too cold and snowy) it's a good time to pick up some suede shoes. You can even design your own pair at Awl & Sundry

Read more about fall shoe trends here.

A leather portfolio

Unless you want to lose everything, definitely invest in a work bag.

Although messenger bags have been  popular the last few years, we recommend you get a portfolio instead. Messenger straps can crinkle your shirt and suit — and no one wants to look disheveled at a meeting.

You can get yourself a black leather portfolio from 3.1 Philip $750 here at OWEN's online shop.

But if you must get a messenger bag, here's a cheaper option for $188.

outlaw instagrammersNew York is a magical city, full of interesting people and mysterious places. You can live in New York City your entire life and never see 99% of it, especially the parts you're not allowed to.

A group of urban explorers, dubbed "Outlaw Instagrammers" in a recent New York Magazine article, are seeking to see more of the city than anyone else.

These young daredevils, equipped with cameras and light clothes, scale to the top of New York's highest buildings and bridges in order to photograph what they see. Most of their photos end up on Instagram, their preferred method of dissemination. Their work has garnered a lot of attention and for some, tens of thousands of followers.

Getting to those high spots is very dangerous and often illegal, which makes looking at these photos that much more exhilarating.

We compiled a list of our favorite feeds of "Outlaw Instagrammers." We don't suggest you try these stunts on your own, but we hope looking at the pictures makes your day a little more exciting.

We kick it off with @humzadeas, arguably the most well-known of the Instagrammers. His escapades were recently profiled in a New York Magazine article.

He's only 17 years old, but he seems to be climbing the buildings and bridges of New York City almost every night and posting his adventures.

HOUSE OF THE DAY: An Insane New York Mansion Has Been Discounted To $98 Million

$114 million new york upper east side mansion

Who ever thought $98 million could be a deal?

Last December, an insanely beautiful mansion on New York's Upper East Side was listed for $114 million. After languishing on the market for nine months, it has been discounted to the low, low price of $98 million, according to Curbed.

Now the third most expensive home in NYC, the six-level property has 20,000 square feet of living space.

That's in addition to 2,500 square feet of outdoor space, which includes a roof deck with sweeping views of Central Park and the city.

The 69th Street home was built in 1884, and bought by investor Vincent Viola and his wife Teresa, the president of Maida Vale Designs, for $20 million in 2005. They gut-renovated the townhouse to create the extravagant residence it is today, according to The New York Times.

After trying to flip it for a whopping $114,077,000, they've lowered the price to an even $98 million.

And if the amenities are any indication, it's totally worth it. According to Corcoran Group, which is selling the home, the mansion has a saltwater pool with spa, panic room, heated stairs and floors in the parlor, plus a brick pizza oven in the kitchen.

There's even an onyx elevator. You have to see this house to believe it.

Welcome to the now-discounted $98 million mansion on the Upper East Side. It's on 69th Street between Fifth and Madison Avenues.

The People For the Ethical Treatment of animals do a lot of "shockvertising": using controversial images to burrow a message into your brain, by way of nearly naked people, bloody animal corpses, or an intensely dark sense of humor.

The nonprofit revels in its audacity, putting together websites to promote ads that have been banned or rejected.

Though they turn plenty of heads, do some of their ads go over the line? PETA has been slammed for objectifying women, which may alienate potential new followers.

The U.S. Air Force continues to play an important role in giving ground and amphibious forces the flexibility to attack and a means to escape enemy fire.

“Since the Korean War, this nation has deployed about 7 million men and women at arms to different contingencies around the world,” Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh said in December of 2013, according to the Department of Defense.

Since its founding on September 18th 1947, the U.S. Air Force is the world's leading force of its kind, with one of the highest budgets of the four branches and the most expensive acquisition in military history currently in its grasp.

The Best Drones You Can Buy

$
0
0

drone tedWho doesn't want a drone of their own? They're remote control aircraft with autonomous navigation capabilities, expandable to carry different types of gear that might be useful from the sky (this usually means cameras and other imaging equipment). Drones are simply robots that fly, and you can buy one if you so choose.

What do you do with a drone? Nearly all the same things you'd do with a conventional remote control airplane (fly it for fun), but there are a number of interesting things made possible by endowing a flying vehicle with robot brains. A farmer might use one to automatically conduct an aerial survey of his or her crops via the same exact route every day without even having to leave the house. Enterprising paparazzi might use a drone to sneak a celebrity shot from a non-obvious vantage point. Swedish scientists have even choreographed drones to "weave tensile structures" (read: build buildings out of fabric).

For now, the mainstream fun to be had with drones seems to be in outfitting them with cameras and flying around, watching the live video feed. Quite the step up from Microsoft Flight Simulator 98. Let's check some of the more notable consumer drones out there now.

SEE ALSO: Read more in this series.

First up is the H-King Darkwing ($167).

FPV, or first-person view, is the term for drone flights that make use of a forward-facing camera, almost always providing a live feed back to the pilot on the ground. Watching the feed while flying is akin to physically sitting in the cockpit of your tiny airplane.

The H-King Darkwing has been specifically designed to carry a camera for FPV flights and "can be field assembled in minutes and is easy to transport."

INTOUR

This year has been marked by the rise of the YouTube star.

People are noticing that YouTube is creating the next generation of mega media stars, who are making millions.

Last week, I flew to LA from NYC to attend an event called INTOUR, put on by Fullscreen, to see what it was like when 15 famous YouTube stars (most of them very cute teenage boys) showed up to perform and hang out with thousands of their fans (most of them young teenage girls).

Because the fans are minors, all tickets came with a free ticket for a parent or guardian.

The parents milled around, seemingly super confused as to why their daughters were shrieking and crying over these young kids the majority of the world has never heard of. But it was amazing.

After spending the day with the talent and the fans, one thing was clear: YouTube celebrities are accessible, unlike Hollywood A-listers who remain untouchable.

These kids want to be friends with their fans. They all took the time to say hi, take selfies, and give hugs. As I completed interview after interview with these young stars on the rise, one thing was clear: They were humble and really interested in spreading a message that being yourself is the best thing you can be.

What better idea to send to young and impressionable kids?

I arrived at the Pasadena Convention Center in Los Angeles at 8 a.m.

The folks who had bought VIP tickets had been waiting for hours already.

Everyone got a purple wristband.
