HOUSE OF THE DAY: The Largest Private House In The UK Is On The Market For $11.1 Million

Wentworth_Woodhouse_01

The largest private house in the United Kingdom with over 250,000 square feet and 365 rooms has gone on sale for a surprisingly paltry $11.1 million, according to The Daily Mail.

In its prime, the Wentworth Woodhouse estate was the height of aristocratic English society. It sat on the richest seams of coal in South Yorkshire just as the Industrial Revolution was taking off — and seemed to be the center of infinite wealth.

Built by First Marquess of Rockingham, the home took so long to build that the eastern and western wings of the home were built in different architectural styles (the east side is early-18th century Baroque while the west is mid-18th century Palladian).

It is so staggeringly massive that guests to the Wentworth Woodhouse were actually given baskets of confetti to scatter as a trail so that they wouldn't get lost on their way back to their rooms at the end of the evening, according to The Daily Mail

Click here to tour the home >

The palatial Wentworth Woodhouse is steeped in history, too. The Fitzwilliam family, who inherited the estate after the 2nd Marquess died, were thought to be the inspiration behind Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice.” They were the 6th wealthiest landowners in the country at the time and the 4th Earl Fitzwilliam is thought to be the real-life counterpart to Austen's dreamy Fitzwilliam Darcy.

The Fitzwilliams threw Gatsby-esque parties, and guests would sometimes meet on the train back to London to discover that they had both been in the same house party all weekend, according to the Daily Mail.

But after World War II, the property was ripped to shreds by the government. There was a national shortage of coal, and the Minister Of Fuel and Power ordered the grounds of the house to be dug up for opencast mining.

The house was headed for a ruin, and when the 8th Earl Fitzwilliam died in a plane crash on a scandalous rendezvous with JFK’s sister Kathleen ‘Kick’ Kennedy in 1948, the home was turned over and became a college of physical education.

In 1999, the Newbold family bought the estate and have spent years trying to restore the home to its original glory. The family is now selling the estate for a reported £7 million or $11.1 million, although it still needs an estimated $42 million in repairs.

Welcome to the esteemed Wentworth Woodhouse. It is twice the size of the Buckingham Palace and once employed a staff of over 1,000.

The Wentworth Woodhouse is being sold with nearly 90 acres of parkland, several resident statues, and a chandelier that is too big to be removed.

The open-cast mining by the government came right up to the edge of the main lawn on this side of the house. The Newbold family spent 15 years trying to remain damages.

11 Surprising Things That Affect Your Willpower And Decision Making

$

mark zuckerberg facebook

Mark Zuckerberg wears the same gray T-shirt every day.

Being a boring dresser helps him take care of his brain, the Facebook CEO says.

"I really want to clear my life to make it so that I have to make as few decisions as possible,"he explained in a recent Q&A.

A growing body of research shows that the willpower used in decision-making is like a muscle.

As Florida State psychologist Roy Baumeister details in his book "Willpower: The Greatest Human Strength," you can only use so much willpower in a given day.

That's why many executives, like Zuck, avoid tapping into their willpower reserves by limiting the number of decisions they have to make. "I feel like I'm not doing my job if I spend any of my energy on things that are silly or frivolous about my life," he said.

As Baumeister's research has revealed, willpower and decision-making are interconnected. The house you grew up in, the number of decisions you made today, and what your friends are doing all affect your decisions in weird ways.

To increase your willpower, minimize the number of decisions you have to make each day.

Zuckerberg isn't alone; Barack Obama is a boring dresser, too.

He's always clad in a blue or gray suit.

"I'm trying to pare down decisions,"he told Vanity Fair. "I don't want to make decisions about what I'm eating or wearing. Because I have too many other decisions to make."

Obama isn't the only one concerned for his decisions: 2011 study of 1 million people around the world found that people think that self-control is their biggest weakness or character failure.

Make your most important decisions in the morning, before you experience "ego depletion."

Baumeister and other decision researchers talk about "ego depletion," which states that you only have so much mental energy to make decisions or exercise self-control in a given day.

The term is a nod to Sigmund Freud, the Austrian doctor who invented psychoanalysis.

"Freud speculated that the self, or ego, depended on mental activities involving the transfer of energy," the New York Times reports. "[His] experiments demonstrated that there is a finite store of mental energy for exerting self-control."

That means the more complex the problem, the earlier in the day it should be tackled.

Your brain needs glucose in order to make good decisions.

"Even the wisest people won't make good choices when they're not rested and their glucose is low," Baumeister told the New York Times. "That's why the truly wise don't restructure the company at 4 p.m. They don't make major commitments during the cocktail hour. And if a decision must be made late in the day, they know not to do it on an empty stomach."

Grocery retailers discovered this decades ago.

Candy and soda are positioned at the checkout line to take advantage of decision fatigue: You just waded through the whole store making dozens of decisions, so the quick hit of energy in a Dr. Pepper or a Snickers looks even more attractive than usual.

As ISIS Continues To Gain Ground, Here's What The Militants Have In Their Arsenal

$

isis

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) rakes in over $1 million a day and commands"a volume of resources and territory unmatched in the history of extremist organizations," according to Janine Davidson and Emerson Brookings of the Council on Foreign Relations.

The Al Qaeda splinter group has massacred members of Iraq's Yazidi religious minority, broadcast the murder of captured western journalists and aid workers, and launched a campaign of terror against any local tribes that dare to oppose its rule.

Now the target of a sustained campaign of American airstrikes, ISIS has previously declared the establishment of a caliphate, underscoring its ambition to become a permanent feature on the map of the Middle East.

ISIS wouldn't have been able to carve out such a vast domain, or present itself as a state-like entity capable of controlling territory and ruling over a population of millions, if it hadn't been armed to the hilt, partly from its seizure of military equipment from fleeing Iraqi soldiers and plundered Syrian military bases.

When ISIS overran Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city, in June, it captured weaponry that allowed the group to arm itself like a conventional army.

"You lost approximately three divisions worth of equipment and probably at least three depots in that area," Anthony Cordesman, a security analyst at the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies, told The Wall Street Journal

More recently, ISIS captured anti-aircraft weaponry from an air force base in eastern Syria, including rockets capable of bringing down planes flying at 16,000 feet. Although US airstrikes have targeted the group throughout both Iraq and Syria, the jihadists are continuing to expand throughout Anbar province right up to the border with Baghdad.

A large quantity of the weapons that ISIS has seized were supplied by the U.S. to the Iraqi Army. ISIS also fields weapons produced in Russia, China, the Balkans, and Iran.

T-55 Tanks

It is estimated that ISIS has about 30 T-55 tanks, although it is unknown how well the organization can maintain and operate them. The T-55 tank series is a Soviet tank line that was produced from the end of World War II through the 1980s.

Despite the tanks' age, they remain operational in up to 50 armies around the world. The tanks feature heavy armor, along with a 100-mm rifled gun and a secondary 7.62-mm machine gun.

T-62 Tanks

ISIS has an estimated 15 T-62 model tanks. The T-62 was the main Soviet battle tank that was developed to replace the T-55. This tank was used extensively by the Iraqis to considerable success during the Iran-Iraq war.

The T-62 is heavily armored, and is armed with a 115mm tank gun along with two secondary machine guns.

T-72 Ural Tanks

The militants have an estimated five to 10 T-72 tanks, although it is unknown whether they will be able to keep the vehicles in working order.  The T-72 tank is the second-generation Soviet battle tank. These tanks first entered production in 1971, and they are still rolling off the assembly line.

The T-72 is heavily armored and features a 125-mm main gun. It is also armed with a secondary machine gun and an antiaircraft gun.

But it's no secret the former Google executive and self-professed nerd leads a pretty interesting life, filled with high fashion, luxurious apartments, and exclusive parties.

Mayer made a fortune when Google went public in 2004 — and her lifestyle choices certainly show that.

Marissa Mayer grew up in Wausau, Wisconsin, where she worked hard in class and juggled many different after-school activities: piano lessons, debate team, volleyball, swimming, and ballet, which gave her a tremendous amount of discipline.

She left Wisconsin for Stanford, where she got both her bachelor's and master's degrees in symbolic systems. She was a stand-out in her computer science classes and received a whopping 14 job offers upon graduation. She eventually chose Google, becoming the young search engine's 20th employee and its first female engineer.

Mayer already had plenty of wealth to her name by the time she became Yahoo's CEO in 2012. As one of Google's first employees, she made a fortune when the company went public in 2004.

13 College Majors In Which The Pay Goes Nowhere

$

0

Stanford University college graduationWhen deciding on a college major, students are encouraged to think about a few things: what they love to do; what they want to do; what jobs they imagine themselves in; and what the earning and growth potential is like for those careers.

For instance, they would probably want to know ahead of time that human services majors see their annual pay increase by only about $7,500, or 22%, over the first 10 years of their careers, compared with the average American worker, whose salary grows by about $25,000, or 60%, in that time.

That's according to Payscale, the creator of the world's largest compensation database with more than 40 million salary profiles. It recently looked at the difference between starting (less than five years of experience) and mid-career (10 or more years of experience) pay by college major, and it determined the 13 majors with the smallest salary growth.

"We're not trying to discourage students from pursuing these majors — we're simply offering information so that students can make informed choices and get the most out of their degree, whatever major they choose," says Kayla Hill, a research analyst at Payscale.

Among the majors, child development has the lowest starting salary ($32,200) and mid-career pay ($36,400) while showing the least amount of growth in the first 10 years ($4,200, or 13%).

"Human support service majors tend to be paid less across the board," Hill says. "Child development workers in particular may see less growth over time because it is a field that tends to be undervalued by society. Additionally, childcare workers may not have the same opportunities for advancement as more technical jobs, where learning new skills can lead to a pay bump or promotion."

Human services majors had the second-lowest salary growth between starting and mid-career, while early childhood and elementary education had the third-smallest.

"People in support service jobs tend to find a high level of meaning from their jobs despite the lower pay," Hill says. "For many of these workers, the satisfaction and fulfillment they receive from helping others outweighs the lack of pay growth."

Twenty years after “Dumb and Dumber,” directors and brothers Peter and Bobby Farrelly released the long, long awaited sequel “Dumb and Dumber To,” reminding Hollywood that they still have some muscles to flex.

Check out the famous pairs of brothers >>

But the Farrellys aren't the only brothers who are running things in front of and behind the camera, in agencies, studios and on the Internet.

From the Coens, who can cast any A-lister they want in any of their movies, to the Hemsworth brothers Chris and Liam, steadily becoming leaders of the next generation of leading men, to John and Hank Green, revolutionizing the way young people consume their media, brothers are influencing how Hollywood does business from every facet.

Harvey and Bob Weinstein kick off TheWrap's list of the 17 Most Powerful Brothers in Hollywood, but there are plenty more powerful last names around town.

Harvey and Bob Weinstein

Harvey has greenlight power, which is hard to come by in this town. He's known by one name, like Madonna or Prince. He can call Quentin Tarantino 24/7. Now THAT'S power.

Bob runs profit center Dimension, which is ramping back up with a new “Amityville” movie starring Bella Thorne and MTV's upcoming “Scream” series, which could be a huge hit next year.

Christopher and Jonathan Nolan

Christopher is one of the most powerful directors in this or any galaxy, having reinvigorated the comic book movie genre. Meanwhile, every screenwriter would be jealous of Jonah's credits, which include his brother's five best movies — “Memento,” “The Dark Knight,” “The Prestige,” The Dark Knight Rises and “Interstellar.”

Not only did he create a hit series — CBS’ “Person of Interest” — but he has two HBO series in the works: “Westworld” and “Foundation.”

Ben and Casey Affleck

Ben has a comeback story for the ages, climbing from tabloid fodder to the top of the A-list with a Best Picture Oscar for “Argo,” dramatic cred for David Fincher's “Gone Girl” and Batman's cowl on his mantle.

Casey is an indie darling with crossover power, which allows him to jump from “Ain't Them Bodies Saints” to “Interstellar.” He plans to topline and produce a film about the Boston Strangler, as well as star in Disney's “The Finest Hours.” The Affleck boys worked together on Ben's directorial debut “Gone Baby Gone” as well as “Good Will Hunting.”

What does a celebrity who already has everything do?

Buy a winery, of course.

We rounded up celebrity winemakers, some whom have invested in their own vineyard and others who have teamed up with an already established winery to create their own unique collection.

From AC/DC’s "Back in Black Shiraz" to Francis Ford Coppola’s Sophia rosé (named after his daughter), these are the best celebrity wines and winemakers.

Cheers.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Château Mirava, South France

Brad Pitt and Angelia Jolie are the epitome of a power couple. Among their charity projects and awards, Angie and Brad own a $60 million estate and winery in Provence.

Their winery is located at Château Miraval, a 1,200-acre estate in the village of Correns, France. Built in 1841, the French Country manor has 35 rooms and 926 acres of fountains, gardens, and woodlands. It even has a moat.

The couple just released their second award-winning wine this year, a rosé called the Chateau Miraval. The wine, which was was one of Wine Spectator's top 100 wines last year, was released on February 7th and sold out within five hours

The Château was also the location of their secret wedding.

Sting and Trudie Styler, Il Palagio, Italy

Sting and his wife Trudie Styler have their own vineyard just 45 minutes south of Florence where they make organic and "biodynamic" wines.

The 900-acre estate, known as Il Palagio, also has a 16th-century villa with swimming pool, 12 acres of vegetable gardens, around 80 bee colonies, olive groves, and several small lakes.

Their wines are also often named after Sting's songs. The first wine they made was called "Sister Moon," and they also have a wine called "When We Dance."

In addition to wine, Il Palagio also produces honey and organic olive oil.

Francis Ford Coppola, Rubicon Estate Winery, California

"The Godfather" director is a true oenophile and has produced over 40 wines from his resort in the heart of Alexander Valley, California.

The winery is named the Rubicon Estate Winery and is located in one of Napa Valley’s prime spots. The estate has a wine tasting bar, two restaurants, swimming pools, a movie gallery, a performing arts pavilion, and a park area with game tables and bocce courts.

The winery also produces a rosé called Sophia in honor of his daughter Sophia Coppola.

London Green Roof Map

Aside from its public parks, London is not a city famed for its green space.

What many visitors and residents of the city don't realise, however, is that there are hundreds of secret gardens hidden high above London's streets.

Data from the Greater London Authority estimates there are around 700 green roofs in central London alone, covering an area of more than 175,000 square metres — or around 25 football pitches — as displayed in this map below.

We've picked out our favourites.

London's Southbank is a popular tourist spot, but many people don't know that Queen Elizabeth Hall houses a stunning roof garden with great views of the London Eye.

The Boundary Rooftop Bar & Grill in Shoreditch includes a weatherproof pergola allowing the bar and dining area to remain open all-year-round. The garden itself is home to a canopy of grape-producing vines, a working kitchen garden and a wild herb theme.

Nomura Bank HQ on 1 Angel Lane has eight tennis courts-worth of green space for employees to enjoy. Alongside the lawns there are also "kitchen gardens" with vegetables and edible flowers, tended to by the bank's switchboard staff.

16 Photos Of China's Brutal Paramilitary Training

In addition to an active-duty military numbering more than 2 million China has a paramilitary force with almost 4 million members

By comparison, the US military has 1.4 million active-duty members.

The paramilitary serves as an auxiliary force for the People's Liberation Army. During times of peace, it's primarily concerned with law enforcement and internal security.

In times of war, they could triple the size of China's available military force — a potentially crucial source of strength, considering Beijing's ongoing tensions with its neighbors over its borders and various islands in the South China Sea.

They've previously received criticism for oppressing journalists and using violent tactics to quash protests in Tibet.

Reuters published a photo of a Chinese paramilitary member crawling through the sand in 102-degree temperatures. We decided to take a look at the paramilitary police training, and at what China's massive auxiliary force goes through.

This report is originally by Brian Jones.

The text on this wall reads "perfect mastery."

It describes the aim of the Chinese paramilitary police's rigorous training regimen.

Truth About iPhone 6 Plus: What It's Like Spending 60 Days With Apple's First Phablet (AAPL)

$

iphone 6 plus japan launch

I've been using the iPhone 6 Plus as my primary phone for the past 60 days.

In my review, I called it a dream phone. Apple finally made the big-screen phone I had been dying to buy for years.

But now that I've had a full two months with the 6 Plus, I have a few more thoughts on what it's like living with Apple's first phablet.

I never use my iPad mini anymore. In fact, I'm going to sell it.

I bought an iPad mini with Retina display last year shortly after it launched. Many days, I used it more than my iPhone 5S. That extra screen space helped me get a lot more done.

But now that I have the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus, I don't see a need for the iPad mini. Maybe it makes more sense to get a full-size iPad now. But in the meantime, I'm going to sell my iPad mini because I never use it.

It's not too big for my pants pocket, but it is uncomfortable when I sit down.

One of my biggest fears about the iPhone 6 Plus was that it would be too big to fit comfortably in my jeans. Luckily, it fits just fine.

But when I sit down with the 6 Plus in my pocket, it sort of jabs into my hip. It's very uncomfortable if I have to sit for long periods of time. I usually take the phone out and keep it on my desk.

But it's probably too big for most people. You should probably consider buying the iPhone 6 instead.

While the iPhone 6 Plus is a good size for me, it won't necessarily be right for everyone. I'm a tall dude and have big hands to match, so I don't have a problem using such a large phone. If you have smaller hands, you're probably better off with the iPhone 6.

In fact, whenever someone asks, I suggest trying the iPhone 6 first. It's a more manageable size.

Cars may be machines, but they can still touch the heart and provoke strong emotions.

Curving lines, powerful engines, and outrageous luxury can draw people in just as much as a pretty face.

People have been falling in love with their cars for 100 years.

That's why we've assembled this list of the 50 sexiest cars of the past century.

We've got American muscle, Italian speed, and British luxury. We even have Swedish power.

Some of these cars were lemons, some were total flops. Others were wildly successful and are still on the market today. But every last one is packed with sex appeal.

[An earlier version of this story was written by Alex Davies.]

50. A rather hefty ride, the Hummer H2 has none of the sleek characteristics that often note a sexy car. Its appealing, brawny look marked the heyday of the big American SUV.

49. A product of the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Miura was one of the first cars Lamborghini built to rival Ferrari (Ferruccio Lamborghini founded the car company after making his money in tractors). The model pictured here once belonged to Frank Sinatra.

48. Maserati was founded in 1914, but it didn't build a grand touring car (for luxury and long drives) until 1957, when the 3500GT went into production. With room for four and a straight-six cylinder engine, it was a beautiful machine.

Bentley Grand Convertible 1

Bentley pulled the cover off of its latest ultra-luxurious convertible this week in Los Angeles — and what is at this stage a near-production-concept looks primed to compete against the best Rolls-Royce has to offer.

Although its just a concept for now, the two-tone, four-seater looks set to follow in the long line of drop-top cruisers from Bentley.

Christened the "Grand Convertible"— That's a direct translation from British! —  the Bentley will make its public debut at this month's Los Angeles Auto Show. And there's a very good chance that it will actually produced and go on sale in the next year or so.

“This concept demonstrates Bentley’s ability to create a pinnacle convertible Grand Tourer, while embodying elegance beyond compare," Bentley CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer said in a statement.

"With this car we combine the opulent Mulsanne experience"— Mulsanne is Bentley's top-of-the-line car — "with the full sensory indulgence of open-air touring, continuing to unite luxury and performance in new ways."

Dürheimer added that the Grand Convertible will be a "highly exclusive, extremely limited collector’s piece."

In case you were wondering, that's Bentley-speak for "the car will cost a lot, there won't be very many, an the waiting list will be epic."

So if you want one, prepare to put your order in now.

The $480,000 Rolls-Royce Drophead Coupe has been the unquestioned king of the ultra-luxurious, hyper-expensive convertible market for past half decade.

In fact, since Bentley axed the plush Azure convertible in 2010, Rolls-Royce has pretty much had the segment to itself.

Even the Bentley Continental GT drop top — a fantastic and capable car — couldn't directly compete. The Continental is a more modern performance-oriented product aimed to compete with the "more affordable" Rolls-Royce Ghost.

Powerful Photographs Show Everyday Life In Ukraine Before And During Wartime

Row of BonesIn late 2013, English photographer Christopher Nunn found himself in a small town in Ukraine, alone and unable to speak the language, just as the crisis in Crimea was starting to foment.

Equipped with only his camera, Nunn had been in the country for months, attempting to reconnect with his family's forgotten Ukrainian roots through photography. He was especially interested in capturing the everyday lives of Ukraine's common citizens.

But as crisis spread and unrest grew, Nunn's work took a different tone.

"I never set out to document the political situation or the war directly," Nunn says.

Nonetheless, he captured what he saw, chronicling the subtle and not-so-subtle effects the violence and turmoil had on daily life in Ukraine, in both big cities and small towns.

This body of work, titled "A Row Of Bones," is an understated but affecting look at life right now in Ukraine. More work can be seen on Nunn's website.

In early 2013, Nunn decided to travel to his grandmother's hometown of Kalush, in western Ukraine. His grandmother left the town when she was 15 years old and never returned. Nunn wanted to connect to a part of his family's history that he was unfamiliar with by exploring and photographing.

Nunn, who was traveling alone and did not speak any Ukrainian, says that the country "was like another world to me. I was interested in the way people live, but I didn’t want to see this from a distance, I wanted to get close and understand more and take my time."

Nunn says he spent a lot of time "walking around, drinking vodka, and smoking cigarettes." He met briefly with another photographer who wrote a note for him which read "Please can I take photo?" in Ukrainian before leaving. From then on, he was on his own.

The 3 Kinds Of Boots Men Need For Winter

Winter is coming, but is your footwear up to snuff?

You shouldn't be trudging through the impending snow with your canvas sneakers or suede footwear. In fact, suede, leather soles, and desert boots should all be in storage for the long, cold, and wet months ahead.

Instead, break out the rubberized boots and Vibram outsoles. Keep reading to see the only boots heavy duty enough for the ice and snow.

1. Semi-dressy work boots

dressyboots

These are the boots you'll want to wear when it's iffy outside, but you still want to look nice. Modeled after work boot styles from last century, these will last you miles and miles.

What really separates these from the typical boot is that they don't have a leather sole, which you commonly see with Chelsea boots and some brogue styles. Leather soles are awful for winter because they provide zero traction and soak up water.

Instead, these boots have rubberized Danite soles and neocork rubber hybrids, which provide much more traction.

On the expensive end of the spectrum, there's the Viberg's Service Boot — they have a Danite sole and a very unique, slimmer profile. A little lower than that price point are favorites like Alden's classic Indy boot with it's neocork sole and unique toe stitching. The best value (and lowest price) is Chippewa's Original Plain Toe Boots with a Vibram sole and classic work boot good looks.

2. Boots with lugged soles

When the weather gets a little rougher outside, you're going to need a tougher boot. Boots with lugged soles are built to keep you from slipping on the ice and snow.

They often come in work or hiking boot styles, which may not be acceptable for your work place, but are always appropriate for your commute.

We recommend the Danner Mountain Light II, which has a hiking boot style, and the Red Wing Beckman, which is a revival of a classic work boot. Both have a long heritage of bulletproof quality boots behind them and are equipped with rubber lugged soles, providing optimal traction in the ice and snow.

3. All-weather duck boots

For trekking in the tundra, there's no boot better suited to the task than the classic duck boot. The rubberized sole and tough, full grain leather uppers provide full protection from the wet and icy wilderness. These are the boots you need to wear when heavy snow is in the forecast.

The go-to duck boot choice is the L.L. Bean Bean Boot, which invented the category way back in 1912. L.L. Bean still makes them and they're still handcrafted in the company's Maine facility.

Many have attempted to copy the L.L. Bean design, and some have even comes close. The Sorel Cheyenne Lace Up Boots are a good alternative thanks to their soft inner lining (the Bean Boots don't have a lining, but they do offer a lined version $189).
