The most affordable small town in every state

0
0

Clear Lake, South DakotaCost of living makes a big difference when choosing where to move — and not all places were created equal.

We found the most affordable small town in every state.

To do this we looked at towns with populations between 1,000 and 10,000 whose households spend no more than 30% of their annual income on housing costs. We looked at the average cost of three types of housing — owned houses with a mortgage, owned houses without a mortgage, and rentals — and took a weighted average of these by the proportion of each type of home in the town.

Click here to read more about our methodology.

ALABAMA: Fayetteville

93% of homes are affordable.

An hour south of Birmingham, Fayetteville is actually named after a town in Tennessee from which early residents migrated. Employing over 33% of residents, retail is the most popular industry here, followed by manufacturing, which employs 15% of residents.

ALASKA: Healy

91.5% of homes are affordable.

Only 11 miles from the Denali National Park and Preserve, Healy offers several lodging and dining options for park visitors, creating a strong tourism industry in the town. However, more than tourism, coal mining in nearby Usibelli Coal Mine makes up most of Healy's livelihood.

ARIZONA: Quartzsite

93.2% of homes are affordable.

Just 18 miles east of the Colorado River, Quartzsite is best known for its beautiful assortment of rocks and minerals— as evidenced by its name. On first glance it might not sound like the most exciting industry, but the town's gem trade entices thousands of visitors per year. There is even a two-month-long gem show that starts in January.

Coolest New Businesses in New Orleans

Despite the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, New Orleans is back on its feet and thriving in the entrepreneurial sector.

Innovative new businesses are popping up all over NOLA. There's an app that tracks employee happiness, a company that creates soil-less urban farms inside recycled shipping containers, and a boutique that sells hand-crafted bikes for women.

We scoured the Big Easy to find the coolest small businesses that opened in the last five years or so.

These hotels look nothing like the photos they post on their websites

Maca Bana's .1024x0.jpg

Hotels aren't always completely honest when it comes to the photos they post on their websites.

Professional reviewers from the hotel review website Oyster visited vacation properties around the world, and the photos they took didn't quite match up with the online fantasy.

If you're thinking of booking a warm getaway to escape the bitter winter cold, let these "photo fakeouts" serve as a cautionary tale against relying solely on hotels' marketing materials.

Some are so egregious, you'll think you are looking at pictures of two completely different properties.

FANTASY: Guest at the Sandals Carlyle Inn can relax on cozy lounge chairs on a beautiful white sand beach.

REALITY: The beach is actually a tiny patch of sand right off a busy street.

FANTASY: At Maca Bana in Grenada, you can sip cocktails by a gorgeous pool and soak in the incredible views.

14 books by mega-successful CEOs that will teach you how to run the world

bill gates

Business books are notorious for being loaded with MBA lard, trotting out "key takeaways" like "take risks,""build a great team," and "don't be afraid to fail."

But the ones worth reading ditch the platitudes in favor of instructive anecdotes — which is why they so often come from execs who have lived through it.

'The Hard Thing About Hard Things'

What is the hard thing about hard things? That they don't have a formula, says Ben Horowitz.

"Hard things are hard because there are no easy answers or recipes," he writes. "They are hard because your emotions are at odds with your logic. They are hard because you don’t know the answer and you cannot ask for help without showing weakness."

Horowitz, now one of the most sought-after investors in the game, used to be CEO of software management company Opsware before it was acquired by HP for $1.6 billion.

'Conscious Capitalism: Liberating the Heroic Spirit of Business'

In 2013, Whole Foods CEO John Mackey published his business manifesto, "Conscious Capitalism: Liberating the Heroic Spirit of Business.

It's as much about management as about philosophy.

As in:

This is what we know to be true: business is good because it creates value, it is ethical because it is based on voluntary exchange, it is noble because it can elevate our existence, and it is heroic because it lifts people out of poverty and creates prosperity.

'The Promise of a Pencil'

In "The Promise of a Pencil," Adam Braun takes you on his journey from backpacker to consultant to founder of Pencils of Promise, the rapidly growing education nonprofit.

"I realized that I needed to live a life that reflected the themes of the stories I wanted to one day tell," Braun writes, "and when I veered off that path later on, it was time to make a change."

He wants the reader to follow a similarly individual path.

"Your life should be a story you are excited to tell," he writes.

Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 (3)

Every year, a car or two takes the automotive community by complete surprise. Case in point:Bentley's truly unexpected EXP10 Speed 6 concept coupe.

And boy! Is it ever a pleasant surprise. Technical details for the stylish sports car were limited — although Bentley has hinted the car could be a performance hybrid. But mechanical details are not all that important. What is important about the EXP10 is the role it will play in the way Bentleys of the future are styled.

"EXP 10 Speed 6 is one vision for Bentley’s future – a powerful, exquisite and individual concept," Bentley CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer said. "The showcar has the potential to be the new pinnacle luxury two-seat sports car. It offers thrilling, driver-oriented performance, complete with trademark modern Bentley luxury and effortlessness."

The Bentley EXP10 Speed 6 made its world debut at the 2015 Geneva International Motor Show.

The Bentley EXP10 Speed 6 concept car could become a smaller brother to the brand's iconic Continental line.

The "Speed 6" name hints that the EXP 10 could ditch Bentley's obligatory W12 or V8 engines for V6 that could even be a hybrid.

With that said, the EXP10 still maintain Bentley's signature round headlights and matrix front grille.

These fascinating diagrams reveal how to manage people in different countries

japan management

Japanese managers do their best to avoid telling anyone what to do.

This strategy, which is diagrammed on the right, is essential in a culture driven by honor, and it is possible thanks to strong intuitive communication traits.

In fact, every country has a unique management structure like this, according to linguist Richard Lewis, who has given us permission to publish the fascinating if sometimes mystifyingly complex management diagrams from "Cross-Cultural Communication: A Visual Approach."

To hear Lewis speak, sign up for his talk on the challenges of going global on April 22 in San Francisco, with a free webinar and article available for our readers.

Argentine managers win over their staff with a "combination of intellectual argument and openly friendly stance."

"The Aussies want their boss to join them in a healthy disrespect for rules and formalism, to lapse into broad speech and cuss a bit, to be affable and ironic at the same time, and to avoid flowery or obscure expressions."

Austrian managers use "a combination of folksy Austrian-accented German and sophisticated French loan-words."

10 features that make the Rolls-Royce Wraith one of the most desired cars on the market

0

Rolls Royce Thumb

Rolls-Royce is on a roll.

The BMW-owned British luxury car manufacturer has just announced that it’s going to build its first ever SUV for people who like their luxury splashed with mud.

Last year it cracked 4000 car sales for the first time and is building a new tech and logistics centre in the seaside town of Bognor Regis, not far from the company’s Goodwood HQ.

For Australian fans of the marque, a new 2-door Rolls-Royce Wraith arrived in Sydney last week and Business Insider had the chance to take it for a quick spin.

If you think Rolls is a brand for geriatric fuddy-duddies, Middle East princes and Russian oligarchs, then the Wraith will change your mind.

It’s not a sport car, but it exudes confidence, with opulent, tapered lines, rather than the boxy, classical ones most equate with a Roller. This though doesn't mean it comes for cheap: the starting price for this jewel is £230,000 ($350,000)

Also, it’s a big car – and not one you want to try and squeeze between the pylons in an underground car park – but that room gives you plenty of space for rear seat passengers to stretch out, which isn’t typical of a two-door vehicle.

And then there’s the quiet grunt of the engine – a true iron fist in a velvet glove that’s both all torque and plenty of action.

1. It looks great inside – especially at night when the 1340 fibre optic roof "stars" come out.

2. The Spirit of Ecstasy pops away when you turn the engine off – and returns when you start up.

RANKED: The 50 US state economies from worst to best

0
0

crawfish crayfish corn

The US economy is making a big comeback, with GDP growing and unemployment falling.

Of course, that economy is the sum of 50 state economies, each with its own quirks and unique interactions with the others.

We ranked the states' economies on six measures: recent change in housing prices, nonfarm payroll job growth, unemployment rate, GDP per capita, average weekly wage, and state government surplus and deficit.

While we didn't factor them into the ranking, we also looked at the Fortune 500 companies that have their headquarters in each state and which industries were disproportionately important in each state. This helped us get a little more insight into what makes each state economy tick.

For more details on the sources and methodology, click here.

50: Mississippi

Mississippi came in as the weakest state economy in our ranking. The state has disproportionately large forestry and logging, furniture manufacturing, and wood-product manufacturing industries.

Mississippi came in dead last on three metrics: It had only 0.02% growth in nonfarm payrolls between December 2013 and December 2014; it had the highest December 2014 unemployment rate among the states at 7.2%; and it had the lowest 2013 GDP per capita of $32,421. It also finished second to last in Q2 2014 average weekly wages, at $705 a week.

49: Maine

Maine has the most forested land of any other state by percentage, and this shows up in the state's economy. Forestry and logging, paper manufacturing, and wood-product manufacturing account for a larger part of Maine's employment than they do in other states.

Maine scored poorly on many of our metrics. Maine saw only a 0.84% increase in jobs between December 2013 and December 2014. Maine's 2013 GDP per capita was also low at $38,518. Maine also had a low Q2 2014 average weekly wage of just $746.

48: New Mexico

Mining is a big part of New Mexico's economy, with mining support activities, oil and gas extraction, and other mining all contributing outsize shares of employment.

New Mexico's housing market saw limited improvement between Q3 2013 and Q3 2014, with housing prices rising just 1.24% year-over-year. The state government's finances were also weaker than most, with a 2013 surplus of just about $608 million, compared with an average of about $4.2 billion among all states. Average weekly wages in Q2 2014 were also lower than those of most other states, at $794 compared with an average of $879.

Porsche 911 911With the imminent arrival of the extreme 911 GT3 RS, Porsche is now selling an astonishing 22 different versions of its iconic sports car.

To many, all current 911s pretty much look same. And if you ask Top Gear's bombastic host and longtime newspaper columnist Jeremy Clarkson, he'll tell you that all Porsche 911s since the model's debut in 1963 look identical.

The truth is, most of the various versions of the current generation — known as the 991 — do look similar, but they can all be identified by numerous subtle, but important differences.

Like Taco Bell in the fast food industry, what Porsche has managed to do so successfully is create multiple iterations of the 911 by mixing and matching the same ingredients, packaging them in lots of different ways. And if you've ever driven a 911, you'll probably agree with me in saying...there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

So here it is — the most current lineup of Porsche's 911 Taco Bell Menu.
