4. Sakagura Hidden Restaurant Sake Midtown NYC

Releasing on October 7th (but already available for pre-order on Amazon) will be the new guidebook, New York: Hidden Bars & Restaurants written by Untapped Cities founder Michelle Young and the site’s contributing editor Laura Itzkowitz. As an update to our popular NYC Hidden Restaurants guide on Untapped Cities from 2014, below is our guide for 2015 with descriptions excerpted from the upcoming book.

Upon reviewing the 2015 list, you may wonder where some of the classic hidden restaurants are–Kuma Inn, La Esquina, the ski chalet behind Cafe Select–just to name a few.

As they have been featured in our previous list, we’ve aimed for a wider range of dining types here, from cafes to lunch counters to a referral-only restaurant. This list will get you beyond the trendy to some of the more unique hidden restaurants in New York City.

10. Govinda’s Vegetarian Canteen

On the northern edge of Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, a large Hare Krishna temple stands as an anomaly, surrounded by dollar pizza joints and public welfare offices. Judging by the outside, you would never know that there’s a vegetarian lunch canteen inside—a neighborhood spot unspoiled by guidebooks, most of which wouldn’t be interested in such a modest, unglamorous place anyway. But for Hindu devotees, neighborhood residents, and office workers, Govinda’s is a convenient spot to get a cheap, healthy, and delicious vegetarian lunch in keeping with the Hare Krishna principles of nonviolence and service to god (Krishna) through vegetarianism.

Step inside and head down the stairs to the basement, where large round tables and folding chairs sit atop a clashing red and green linoleum floor. A small buffet station is set up at one end of the room, opposite a painting depicting the Hindu gods. The décor is clearly not a priority, but that’s not why you’re here. You’re here for the homemade samosas, roasted zucchini, tofu, and quinoa salad. The menu changes daily, and the cooks only serve fresh vegetarian food—both Indian and continental. A plate with your choice of three buffet items will leave you full for $6, and the proceeds support the temple.

Located at 305 Schermerhorn Street, Brooklyn.

9. Pulqueria

Looking for an unmarked subterranean Mexican restaurant in the middle of Chinatown? Probably not, but now that you know it exists, you want to see it for yourself, don’t you? Your first challenge is finding Doyers Street—the narrow curving lane off the Bowery where the original Gangs of New York held court. Down here, most restaurant signs are a mix of Chinese and English. But you’re not looking for a sign, because Pulqueria doesn’t have one. Instead, look for the doorway with the white and cerulean zig zag pattern.

The restaurant takes its name from pulque, a spirit made from fermented agave nectar. The Aztecs drank pulque, and today pulquerias all over Mexico serve it, but it’s extremely rare in New York City. Taken straight up, it tastes a bit sour. For something a bit more palatable, try the curados—pulque mixed with tequila or mezcal and fresh fruit like mango, tamarind or coconut. They pair well with the tapas-style menu of light bites, like the ceviches and tuna tostada, served with avocado, chipotle mayo and crispy onion.

Located at 11 Doyers Street, Manhattan.

8. United Nations Delegates Dining Hall

Although the United Nations Headquarters can be visited on guided tours, one of the best kept secrets is the Delegates Dining Room. Despite what its name suggests, the restaurant is also open to the public with advance reservation. The Dining Room re-opened in 2014 following extensive renovations to the General Assembly building, the first update since theUnited Nations complex opened in 1952. The buffet format at the Dining Room means that you’ll be brushing past and sitting amidst ambassadors, dignitaries and delegates, all while taking in impressive views of the East River, Roosevelt Island, and Long Island City. Plus, you get an escort through the main hall on the way there who functions almost like a guide.

The entrance to the Delegates Dining Room is like a step back in time to the mid-20th century. Floor to ceiling wooden beams flank the opening where you’ll be confronted first by the long buffet spread. Inside, the decor is not particularly impressive, but the views from the nearly floor-to-ceiling windows are. The “internationally inspired” buffet is prepared by an executive chef and changes daily.

Here’s what happened when a group of friends built a scale model of the solar system in the desert

earth scale model

Google any image of the solar system and you'll find a photo of the planets bunched together around the sun.

But in reality, the solar system is extremely vast.

To get an idea of just how far that is, it would take about 4 hours to reach the furthest planet from the sun at the speed of light.

In the words of James Irwin, an astronaut on Apollo 15:

As we got farther and farther away, the Earth diminished in size. Finally it shrank to the size of a marble, the most beautiful marble you can imagine ... seeing this has to change a man.

That quote is what inspired writer Wylie Overstreet and director Alex Gorosh to build a model of our solar system, to exact scale, in the middle of the Black Rock Desert in Nevada.

Scroll down to see how they did it.

Every single picture that we encounter of the solar system is not to scale, Overstreet said in the video. Here's one example of how the worlds around us are usually shown in images. "If you put the orbits to scale on a piece of paper, the planets become microscopic."

"The only way to see a scale model of the solar system," Overstreet said, "is to build one." First they had to determine how much space they needed. It ended up being 7 miles of empty space, just to lay out the 8 planets of our solar system. That's a lot of empty space, so Overstreet, Gorosh, and a few friends headed out to Black Rock Desert.

They got to work quickly. They had only 36 hours to set up the planets and measure out the orbits. At the scale they are using, the sun measures about a meter and a half across. In reality, the sun's diameter is 1 million kilometers.

Medicine is gearing up for some big changes.

From innovations in precision medicine that aim to make treatments customizable to patients to cures for some of the world's deadliest diseases, our treatments are shaping up to look very different in the next decade.

Here are the top 10 drug companies to watch.

Gilead’s Sovaldi/Harvoni has the potential to cure Hepatitis C.

In December 2013, the FDA approved the first of a new type of Hepatitis C treatments that has a 95% cure rate and works in as little as 12 weeks without any major side effects. Roughly 3 million people in the US currently have Hepatitis C (HCV), a chronic virus that slowly attacks the liver and can cause later-in-life health problems like cirrhosis and liver cancer.

Gilead Sciences, the company that makes Sovaldi, has already made more than $10.3 billion for the HCV cure. Other existing cures come with nasty side-effects including causing people to come down with flu-like symptoms. The new cure is made without the ingredient that caused those side effects. Experts estimate these new treatments could drastically reduce the cases of HCV over the next decade.

Up next: Gilead's looking into cures for HIV and Hepatitis B, neither of which yet have complete cures.

Aprecia Pharmaceuticals just got approval for the first 3D-printed drug.

Earlier this month, the FDA approved the first 3D-printed drug, an epilepsy medication that's used to treat seizures in children and adults. The pill, which goes by the brand-name Spritam, is made by drugmaker Aprecia Pharmaceuticals.

By 3D printing the powdered form of the drug, it's manufactured into a tablet without being compressed, the FDA notes. This allows it to dissolve faster in the body, delivering the medicine quickly and easily — which is especially important for patients who have trouble swallowing.

Researchers think 3D-printed technology could also be used to make other, more personalized drugs, as well. The possibility of printing your own drugs is still pretty far off, but Aprecia's 3D-printed drug is a huge step forward.

Axovant is betting it all on an Alzheimer’s drug it bought for $5 million.

Axovant's a newbie: While it's only been around for a year, the company, led by 29-year-old former Wall Streeter Vivek Ramaswamy, has put all its eggs in the basket of an Alzheimer's disease drug in that's only one critical clinical trial away from getting approval. Since buying the drug from GSK for $5 million, the company is now valued at $3 billion

There are very few drugs available to treat Alzheimer's disease; the average Alzheimer's drug has a 99% chance of failing. Researchers still haven't nailed down the exact cause of the disease, and very few trials of Alzheimer's drugs are taking place at the moment.

"The only thing that ever really frightened me during the war was the U-boat peril," British Prime Minister Winston Churchill reportedly said while reflecting on the second world war.

By the end of the war, Hitler's Kriegsmarine, the navy of Nazi Germany, had built 1,162 U-boats, which is short for the German word "Unterseeboot," or undersea boat.

In the fall 2015 issue of Weapons of WWII magazine, Marc DeSantis explains how the U-boats were used during World War II.

At the beginning of the war, the commander of the German U-boat fleet, Karl Dönitz, said that if he had 300 U-boats, "he could strangle Britain and win the war."

The Kriegsmarine began the war with just 56 U-boats, but over the course of the war they would build 691 type VII U-boats alone. Here's a photo of a U-35 boat during training exercises in 1936.

The U-boat was not a true submarine in today's sense of the word. It was more of a submersible craft. The diesel engines required air, so while underwater, the craft was powered by 100 tons of lead-acid batteries, meaning it had to surface every few hours when air and battery power were exhausted.

8 truths about money that could change your life

$

young professional woman

The answer to many questions about personal finances isn’t black or white.

There are so many variables, choices, and potential outcomes for most situations that, in many cases, the best answer is simply: it depends.

But you won’t hear any uncertain or unsatisfying financial advice in this episode.

I’m going to cover eight financial truths that apply to everyone in every situation.

They have the power to transform your financial life — if you let them.

SEE ALSO: 7 30-second habits that can help you be more productive and build your wealth

Money doesn’t buy happiness

Researchers have shattered the illusion that having more money makes you happier.

They say earning about $75,000 a year is the sweet spot. That’s a national average that varies depending on where you live. Happiness costs more in big, expensive cities like New York and San Francisco.

Earning $75,000 allows the average American to pay for comfortable housing, have reliable transportation, eat well, take an occasional vacation, and save for the future.

If you earn 20% more, that’s fantastic, but it’s not likely to make you 20% happier.

In other words, money definitely can buy comfort and security. But once you have a moderate amount of stability and income, having more doesn’t make you incrementally happy.

My level of happiness has generally been about the same throughout my entire life, no matter my level of wealth. I think most people are born with a happy thermostat or set point that doesn’t change drastically, no matter how much they have in the bank.

Your earning power is your most valuable asset

While your home or retirement account may hold a lot of value, your ability to earn money is ultimately what allows you to build wealth. Your financial life will completely stall out if you can’t earn income.

Since your earning power trumps everything, you need to protect it like a junkyard dog. Disability insurance was designed to replace a percentage of your income if you get into a debilitating accident or get sick during your working years.

You may have the option to buy short- or long-term disability coverage through work. If not, or if the coverage isn’t enough, you can buy a policy on your own through many of the big-name insurance companies.

And being in good shape, both physically and mentally, allows you to perform at the top of your game and earn what you’re worth.

So take your health just as seriously as your wealth, by eating more nutritious foods, cutting sugary snacks, working up a sweat every day, and going to bed earlier so you get plenty of sleep and feel as rested as possible every morning.

The cost of your time should guide you

Many times we spend money frivolously or overspend because we don’t focus enough on the cost of our time.

For instance, let’s say you earn $20 per hour as a graphic designer and you see a beautiful pair of shoes online that cost $300. Before you reach for your credit card, do some quick math and divide your after-tax hourly wage into the price of the shoes.

For the sake of this example, assume that your average tax rate is 25%. That means your take-home pay would be $15 ($20 x 0.75) per hour. If you divide $300 by $15 per hour, you see that you’d have to work 20 hours to pay for those shoes. If that idea doesn’t thrill you or feel completely worth it, forget about the shoes.

Calculating the value of your time is a powerful way to really understand what something costs. If you’re paid a salary, here’s a quick way to figure your pre-tax hourly rate: Take off the last 3 zeros from your annual salary and divide that number in half.

For example, if you earn $60,000 a year, strip off the last 3 zeros, which gives you $60, and divide by 2. You earn about $30 an hour. Then to get an after-tax ballpark, take about 20% to 25% off that number, which leaves you with approximately $23 an hour.

Not only can figuring the value of your time help you rein in spending, but it’s also a guide for when to hire people. If you need help with chores like yard work, house cleaning, or running errands, and can afford to pay someone less than you earn to do them, it makes sense to hire the help.

7 major movies Bill Murray turned down — or just didn’t pick up the phone for

It’s always fun to think about how a famous role would have been handled if another superstar actor had landed it instead.

And it turns out there are a lot of roles Bill Murray had in his grasp.

In the new book “The Big Bad Book of Bill Murray,” author Robert Schnakenberg looks back on the legend’s career in glowing, but brief, snippets, including those projects he turned down. In some cases, he "passed" on roles because he just didn’t feel like checking his voicemail at the time. (Murray no longer has an agent or manager and gets all of his offers via a 1-800 number he’s set up.)

Here are some of the roles that have come Murray’s way over the years.

SEE ALSO: 23 actors who turned down huge movie roles

“Airplane!”

The directors of the iconic 1980s comedy, Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker, reached out to Murray to play the lead role, Ted Striker. According to the book, Murray turned it down. (The filmmakers also went to David Letterman.) Murray later said that “Airplane!” was an example of a project he passed on but knew would be a hit.

“Bad Santa”

Murray was director Terry Zwigoff’s first choice to play despicable strip-mall Santa/safe cracker, Willie. Zwigoff said that he even got a verbal agreement from Murray. But when it was time to sign a contract the actor was MIA.

“I was told by one of the producers that he really wanted to do it,” Zwigoff said. “I left several messages on his answering machine, but after a few weeks of hearing nothing we eventually moved on.”

The role went to Billy Bob Thornton.

“Batman”

It's hard to believe, but according to the book, Murray was briefly considered by Tim Burton to play the Dark Knight in his 1989 movie. Mel Gibson, Kevin Costner, and Pierce Brosnan were also in contention. The role eventually went to Michael Keaton.

Could you even imagine Murray as Batman?

The snow covering California's Sierra Nevada mountains is the lowest it's been in 500 years

The evidence of a warming planet is all around us.

One place that makes this startlingly clear is California's Sierra Nevada mountain range, where the current snowpack is at the lowest it has been for 500 years, according to a study published online Monday in the journal Nature Climate Change.

The shrinking snow levels, linked to the state's devastating drought, will likely take a toll on the water supplies of farms and cities, reduce the amount of hydroelectric power available, and make wildfires more likely, according to the study's researchers.

Here are some photos that reveal the extent of the problem in stark but stunning beauty.

California is in the midst of a record drought that started in 2012, causing authorities to restrict water use across the state for the first time. The drought's severity is especially clear in the Sierra Nevada (pictured here), where the snowpack April 1 was just 5% of its historical average.

California gets 80% of its precipitation during winter, and the Sierra Nevada snowpack plays a vital role, providing 30% of the state's water supply.

In the new study, scientists pieced together the April 1 snowpack conditions over the entire 400-mile Sierra Nevada range for the past 500 years. They chose April because that's when snow in the Sierra starts to melt due to increased rain and higher temperatures.

How America changed since the Fed gave us 0% rates (DIA, SPX, SPY, QQQ, TLT, IWM)

george bush ben bernanke

In the nine years since the Federal Reserve's last rate hike, the US has gone through a housing-bubble burst, a financial crisis that nearly destroyed the global banking system, the worst recession since the Great Depression, and a slow but steady recovery marked by moderate, consistent growth.

During the darkest days of the crisis, the Fed dropped its benchmark interest rate to near zero in its emergency effort to bring liquidity to the financial markets and stimulate growth.

Now the Fed is considering a rate hike by the end of this year. The last time the Fed raised rates was in June 2006, and rates have been kept as close to zero as possible since December 2008.

Here's how 28 major financial and economic indicators have evolved in the era of zero-interest rates.

SEE ALSO: NEED A CHANGE? Here are the 20 best US cities for getting a new job

The Federal Reserve last raised interest rates on June 29, 2006. As the economy began deteriorating in late 2007, the Fed started cutting rates, eventually reaching a target rate of zero on December 16, 2008, where rates have remained for the last six and a half years.

During the Great Recession, real GDP fell by about 4% from just under $16 trillion in Q2 2008 to $14.4 trillion in Q2 2009. Since that time, the overall economy has rebounded, with Q2 2015 GDP estimated at $16.3 trillion.

Manufacturing was hit hard in the recession. The value of manufacturers' new orders dropped from $487 billion in June 2008 to $330 billion in spring 2009. New orders recovered over the next three years, but have largely remained flat since 2012, with the exception of an abnormally large spike in July 2014.

Raccoons equal Trash Pandas

In early 2014, Redditor /u/CarlPeligro made a brief comment on a photo of a raccoon: "Raccoons = trash pandas."

The description stuck, and now the term "trash pandas" has permeated across Reddit, Imgur, and Instagram alike. There is now a subreddit devoted entirely to "trash pandas." The online community members include owners of domesticated raccoons as well as obsessed fans of the new word for raccoon.

Let's dive into the weird world of "trash pandas."

A lot of submitted posts on /r/trashpandas are original photos.

This one was captioned, "Trash panda I found in the garbage bin at work...I let him out."

The term "trash panda" was likely derived from the name Red Panda.

Despite their name, Red Pandas are not related to panda bears. They actually belong to their own taxonomic category called Ailuridae.

"Trash Pandas" makes sense because raccoons share the black and white coloring of panda bears, but are similar in size and shape to a red panda. They also love trash.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL — The summer Olympics in Rio are less than a year away, and the city still has plenty of preparing to do. One big obstacle: the ramshackle settlements that sit in the exact spots the city wants to use for Olympics infrastructure.

Rio started evicting people from these settlements years ago, but the process isn't yet complete.

Vila Autodromo, a neighborhood that once housed 700 families, is emblematic of the evictions. Sitting right behind the Olympics media center and other half-built structures for the games, Vila Autodromo now has just 87 families left.

Many of them are defiant, refusing to leave for any price.

Below, the story of what's left in this ghost settlement.

Vila Autodromo, located behind a former racetrack ("autodromo" means "autodrome" in English), is on its way to being replaced by a new road for the Olympics.

The settlement looks like a ghost town. Buildings are half torn down, and construction machinery lingers near the entrance to the neighborhood.

There are still remnants of a community, but not much is left.

Making a burger that's just the right amount juicy, flavorful, and properly dressed is no small feat.

(Think you have it down? Test your smarts here!)

There's the meat blend and the temperature, the bun, how long should it go, what's going to go on top—and also your own preferences to consider, of course.

But once you have a few successful sessions under your belt manning the grill, we think it's time to start exploring more.

And it doesn't take much to make your burger just a little better.

In fact, it's as simple as adding one extra element. Don't feel relegated to the same old blend- here are five ingredients to keep things fresh when you're planning your next round of burgers.

Bacon

The first bite into a burger is good, but we'll argue that the second is one of the best. You're past the bread rim and edge of lettuce, with more than just a nip of burger to speak of. You've then gotten to all the vegetables, and the sauce, and—what's that? A little bacon surprise, waiting for you in the middle. Packing some bacon into your burger makes it a little more smoky and a lot richer. (And this burger blend is the easiest way to use up any breakfast leftovers—if they survived!)

Pickles

While most of the time you see pickles piled atop burgers, adding them to your blend can cut all of that (essential) fat with a little acid, keeping them balanced and offering a little zip. Try pickled jalapeños in the Texas Tailgate Burger or these sweeter zucchini pickles if you like 'em like bread and butter.

Fresh Chorizo

Beef shouldn't be the only meat hanging out at your party. Trade it in for pork on your next grill day, and then up the ante by mixing it with fresh chorizo. Suzanne Goin's Grilled Pork Burgers might even make you into a pork burger convert (and if they won't, this Mexican Chorizo and Garlic Shrimp Burger will).

46 companies where the interviews don't suck

Interviewing for a job is rarely fun and almost never easy. But some companies make the experience more tolerable than others.

Jobs website Glassdoor just released its inaugural Candidates' Choice Awards, which recognizes employers with the highest percentage of job candidates who have reported a positive interview experience over the past year.

To determine the winners, Glassdoor relied solely on feedback from recent job candidates who shared their experiences and rated their interviews on Glassdoor. To be considered for the list, a company must have received at least 100 interview experience ratings from job candidates over the past year and each company's positive interview experience percentage must have met or exceeded that of the average company on Glassdoor — which is 54%.

"For job seekers, this report helps them identify companies at a macro level with the best interview experience, according to job candidates — those who have actually gone through the process,” says Scott Dobroski, a Glassdoor spokesperson. "For employers, this report really helps them because it shows them, by industry, where job candidates report a positive interview experience. Employers can use this to see a company's interview experience and better understand what job candidates are saying about them, and compare it against their own interview process, and identify where improvements can be made."

Here are the top companies in 46 different industries:

American fast food chains are taking over international markets.

And brands like McDonald's, Burger King, and Wendy's are offering customized offerings to appeal to different palates.

From a shrimp and avocado burrito to some very unusual pizzas, check out what fast food companies are selling overseas.

McDonald's Japan serves rice cheese balls. The menu items have a crispy outside with a warm, gooey inside.

McDonald's India features the McAloo wrap. Aloo is a type of potato curry served in India and is typically street food. McDonald's put its own spin on the traditional dish by wrapping a flour tortilla around an aloo patty garnished with lettuce, onions, vegetables, and a tangy sauce.

Pizza Hut Russia serves an Oktoberfest seasonal pizza. Toppings include Bavarian sausage, pepperoni, vegetables, sauce, and mustard.

Woman with Shopping Bags_Edited

Timing is everything.

"There really is a best time to do just about anything and everything, and that's especially true when it comes to buying things," writes Mark Di Vincenzo in his book, "Buy Ketchup in May and Fly at Noon."

If you're looking to cut back on expenses or score some deals, don't just consider where you're shopping — consider when you're shopping.

Using tips from Di Vincenzo, along with time-tested advice from sources like DealNews and Mint, we highlighted the best times to buy just about everything, broken down by month.

Megan Durisin contributed to an earlier version of this post.

JANUARY

Bicycles

Bike lanes stay pretty empty in January, making stores roll out the deals on their stock of Schwinns.

New models will start rolling in by the middle of the next month.

Pools and hot tubs

The winter is the best time to purchase warm-weather luxuries, when prices are the lowest.

Plus, it's smart to give yourself several months to regrow the grass in your yard after it gets torn up during pool installation.

emmys predictions main

Sunday's Emmys could just be one of the most exciting years of the awards show.

There's plenty of questions to ask: Will "Game of Thrones" finally win? Will Jon Hamm never win for "Mad Men"? Will Viola Davis make history as the first black woman to win a lead drama role? And will the year of Amy Schumer end with her winning an Emmy?

Business Insider took a look at the major categories and chose who we think will win and how we think should win.

See our predictions for Sunday's Emmy wins below:

Outstanding Drama Series

Will win:“Mad Men”
Should win:“Game of Thrones”

I don't believe The Academy will let "Mad Men" finish out its run without being rewarded an Emmy. It would be a mark of their failure. At the same time, "Game of Thrones" is having a strong moment right now.

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series

Will win: Jon Hamm
Should win: Jon Hamm

There is no way that The TV Academy could let Mr. Hamm leave an Emmy show once again without rewarding him with the trophy. On the other hand, that's exactly what they've done to him for seven years in a row now.

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series

Will win: Viola Davis
Should win: Viola Davis
We are all ready to name Viola Davis the best actress on TV right now. In addition to fronting the hottest Shonda Rhimes show on TV, Davis has the film pedigree to give her the right kind of added prestige for the award. And even though "Empire" star Taraji P. Henson was able to snatch a place in the list, because of her tour de force portrayal of music mafia matriarch Cookie. But in the end, Davis pulled off some dramatic tricks we're not sure Henson even knows.
