Most Instagram stars use iPhone, but it's not always because of the camera

It's not surprising that most Instagram power users take their pictures on the iPhone. It's widely recognized as one of, if not, the best smartphone camera available at the moment.

But with some editing, Instagram users can make even the worst smartphone camera look decent.

Most of the Instagram stars we spoke to like the iPhone for one, two, or even three reasons other than its camera.

See what these Instagram stars said about their iPhones that made them stick with it:

Benj Haisch uses an iPhone 6S Plus as part of his gear.

"I'm currently shooting with an iPhone 6S Plus," Benj Haisch told Tech Insider. "Apple products just work for me and developers of serious photo-related apps seem to release them on iOS well before Android (if they even make an Android edition)."

"I've been taking photos on iPhones seriously ever since VSCOcam came out a few years ago. That app was the biggest game changer for mobile photography since the iPhone. I've also been playing around with Moment lenses as external additions."

When asked if he's ever tried other phones, he said he hasn't, the "only phones I've taken photos with have always been iPhones." Even if he tried an Android phone, he likely wouldn't find many, if any, snap-on lenses for it to experiment with.

Cory Staudacher also chose the iPhone 6S Plus.

Cory Staudacher likes the iPhone 6S Plus for the high-quality 12-megapixel sensor, adding that the "HDR capture mode is so well done."

To adjust the exposure, he uses the VSCO app, but when he needs a little more control over the manual settings than the iPhone's camera app offers, he uses the Manual app in the App Store.

And when even the iPhone's best photography apps aren't enough, he uses a professional Canon 5D Mark III.

Just when you thought everyone used iPhones, Joshua Lott came up, and he uses a Samsung Galaxy S4.

Width: 658px

Up until the summer of 2013, before he even had an Instagram account, Joshua Lott used a BlackBerry. When he finally decided to start his Instagram account, he chose to go against the grain and got a Samsung Galaxy S.

"I don't care for iPhones because everyone has one. I didn't want to be like everyone else," he said.

He uses his S4 exclusively, except for some pictures of the on-going presidential campaigns, which he takes using a DSLR.

He did try out the newer iPhone 6S, however, and admitted that it takes better shots in low-light situations than his S4, especially during night time. But that didn't phase him, "I'm happy with my Samsung."

While many Instagram power users use special apps like VSCO, Priime, or even Adobe's Darkroom app, Lott simply uses the Instagram app to edit his photos.

If he were to upgrade, he would go for the Galaxy S6, stating that he has "no intention of becoming an iPhone user."

15 ways to stay focused all day, according to scientists

america free throws

What was I doing again?

We've all had days where we can't seem to focus, asking that question too many times to count. For some of us, those days are more common than we'd like.

Whether it's fatigue, distractions, lack of motivation, or something else entirely, our inability to focus digs a hole in our productivity and, therefore, can jeopardize our chances of success.

But you don't have to go to extremes, like the main character in "The Wolf of Wall Street" does, to get focused. There are better ways.

Here are 15 tips that scientists have found that enhance focus.

DON'T MISS: 12 healthy habits to get a better night's sleep, according to scientists

Minimize multitasking.

Multitaskers might seem superhuman, but they pay a big price, according to a 2009 Stanford study. In a sample of 100 Stanford students, about half identified themselves as media multitaskers. The other half did not.

The test examined attention spans, memory capacity, and ability to switch from one task to the next — and the multitaskers performed more poorly on each test.

"They're suckers for irrelevancy. Everything distracts them," Clifford Nass, who was a researcher for the study, said in a Stanford press release.

Meditate.

If the saying "practice makes perfect" is true, then meditation is a sure way to enhance focus because it takes a great deal of concentration.

Scientific experiments agree. One study at the University of North Carolina, for example, revealed that students who meditated for just 20 minutes a day for four days performed better on certain cognitive tests.

Exercise regularly.

Exercise isn't just good for the body. It promotes brain health, too, which is important for memory capacity and concentration, according to John Ratey, associate clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

In particular, scientists think regular exercise may help stimulate the release of a chemical called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, which some research suggests helps rewire memory circuits to improve their functioning.

Elderly British man

Surrey, England, has the highest male life expectancy of any place in the UK, according to uSwitch's Quality of Life Index.

In this leafy suburb, men live to be 82 years old, on average. For comparison, the average life expectancy of men in Glasgow, Scotland, is 73, the youngest age of any region in the UK.

The index compared 138 local authority areas within England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland based on 26 different factors, including salaries, disposable income, food and energy bills, and life expectancy.

Each variable was ranked for a given region, where a value of 138 is the best and a value of 1 is the worst.

Local areas that made it onto this list did not necessarily make it onto the list of the best places to live in the UK, which weighted the 26 measures and added them together to get a total index score.

Overall quality of life rankings for each local area are also included on this list, where 1 is the best and 138 is the worst.

Hedge fund manager Whitney Tilson, the founder of Kase Capital, is a big Berkshire Hathaway bull.

In a new presentation, Tilson asserts that Berkshire Hathaway's A shares could have a 45% upside in the next year.

He said the stock price was trading 25% below its intrinsic value, which does not include any Warren Buffett premium. In other words, Tilson doesn't see the company's value declining if Buffett dies.

Tilson thinks there is an 80% probability that Buffett, 85, will be running Berkshire for five more years and a 50% likelihood that he'll stay on for 10 more years.

We've included the presentation below.

What to say when a hiring manager asks, 'How much money do you currently make?'

$
0

meeting, interview

Discussing salary is always a bit uncomfortable — but it's especially tricky when a hiring manager asks what you currently make during a job interview.

Why? There are a few reasons.

First, maybe they were going to offer you, say, $90,000 — but you tell them you currently make $65,000. Once they hear that, they might decide to offer you just $70,000.

Second, maybe they can only offer you $60,000 because that's all they have in the budget for this particular position. When you say you currently earn $65,000, they might think they can't afford you or assume you wouldn't be willing to take a pay cut, and therefore decide not to move forward with you as a candidate.

Third, if you make much less than the average person in your job, the employer might assume you're not a highly valued employee. If you're paid a lot more than the average worker in your position, they might assume you're overqualified.

And lastly, it's just awkward to discuss how much you earn, especially with a stranger.

But whether you like it or not, there's a good chance this question will come up in the interview process.

We spoke to Lynn Taylor, a national workplace expert and the author of "Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant: How to Manage Childish Boss Behavior and Thrive in Your Job,"who provided tips for handling this query. Here's what she said:

SEE ALSO: What to say when the interviewer asks, 'Why should we hire you?'

DON'T MISS: The 27 jobs that are most damaging to your health

1. Be informed.

Enter the interview armed with all the knowledge you can about the salary range for the position, so you'll put your best foot forward, says Taylor. "Visit salary sites like Payscale.com, Glassdoor.com, Indeed.com, and Salary.com to get insight — but also tap into your contacts on LinkedIn and other networks."

She suggests talking to people you may know who work at the company, used to work there, or people who know others who have worked at the firm. "Know in advance your desired salary range and try to be realistic based on your research."

You might be fortunate enough to get the inside scoop during your discussions with HR before getting into the interview. "That would certainly give you a leg up in your salary negotiations," she says. "But many companies will want to vet your experience more closely before divulging their budget."

2. Deflect.

"It's often a game of who'll blink first, but it's well worth trying, using a great deal of diplomacy: 'Well I'm flexible on salary. The position and its growth potential are much more important to me than compensation. Would you be willing to share the rough salary range you have in mind for this position?'" Taylor suggests.

The interviewer might be easy on you and give you a ballpark. In the worst case, they'll say, in effect, "I asked you first," putting you back in the hot seat.

3. Gauge the situation.

If you think your desired salary is too high, inquire about other compensation factors, such as 401(k)s or vacation policies, versus a higher or equal salary. If your salary is extremely below market (one of the reasons you may be leaving your current job), explain why.

"Maybe you've taken on greater responsibility lately, which isn't yet reflected in your salary, or your department has downsized," says Taylor. "You don't want to alarm the interviewer into believing you're underqualified."

Either way, you're adding depth and context to your answer, versus a terse answer: "I make X.""You're also dialing down the 'deal killer meter' by inviting discussion, talking up your strengths and asking questions," she says.

21 lifestyle changes to make if you want to save more money

Couple on Bikes by Water

When it comes to getting rich, the formula is simple: Spend less and save more.

That's easier said than done. To save a considerable amount of money, you have to make more than an intermittent effort. You have to make a lifestyle change.

What kind? We rounded up 21 lifestyle changes anyone can make that could save you hundreds, or even thousands, each year:

SEE ALSO: 9 strategies to become a millionaire, from everyday people who have done it

Record all of the money you spend.

"Write out all of your spending and analyze it,"explain Jeremy Jacobson and Winnie Tseng, who retired in their 30s with multimillions in the bank. "Track your dollars. I guarantee you'll find something that either you didn't know you were spending your money on, or you felt was unnecessary."

It's worked for other everyday "millionaires next door," helped one family of four live comfortably off $14,000 a year, and is highly recommended by financial adviser and bestselling author David Bach.

If you don't want to keep a spreadsheet on your computer, consider an app that will automatically track your expenses for you (Mint, You Need a Budget, and LearnVest are popular options), or write them down in a notebook.

Go homemade.

Restaurant bills add up quickly — the more food you can make at home, the better off your food budget will be. Plus, making your own meals tends to be healthier than eating out.

Try cooking large quantities on the weekends so you'll have leftovers to pack for lunch during the week. Also, consider investing in a crock pot. Crock pot meals cost around $2 per person, while the average takeout dinner or restaurant meal costs upwards of $50 for a family of four — this means you could save tremendously if you traded in a crock-pot meal for takeout once a week.

Grocery shop on a full stomach.

Danielle Wagasky, who spent five years stretching $14,000 a year to cover her family's needs and managed to cut her grocery bill from $800 a month to $400, recently shared her top tricks for slicing your grocery expenses.

"First, go shopping on a full tummy," she told Business Insider. While seemingly harmless, shopping on an empty stomach can be an expensive habit. Everything — particularly junk food — starts to look delicious, and without realizing it, you're tossing all sorts of unnecessary items into your cart.

Try eating a healthy snack before heading to the store so your cravings for processed, packaged foods aren't out of control. Your budget — and waistline — will thank you.

I waited in line for 2 hours to watch all of Shia LaBeouf's movies with Shia LaBeouf

shia all my movies1

The film community in New York City was floored on Tuesday when, out of nowhere, actor/artist/viral topic Shia LaBeouf took over one screen at the Angelika Film Center art-house theater and announced that he would be watching all 27 movies he's starred in (in reverse chronological order).

Described as a performance-art piece, titled "All My Movies" (stylized #ALLMYMOVIES), the project allowed anyone, free of charge, to come join LaBeouf in the theater to watch along. As a bonus, there's been live streaming video of LaBeouf watching the movies.

"All My Movies" ends Thursday, and while it had a slow start, people have since been flocking to the Angelika to be a part of it.

When I showed up on Wednesday, a line snaked down a street block to get into the theater with Shia LaBeouf. Here's what I experienced in the two hours I waited:

SEE ALSO: It's time to stop watching these 8 shows, because they're probably going to be canceled

It was around 12:30 p.m. when I got to the theater and the line was already stretched down the sidewalk. Rumors of people waiting seven hours to get into the theater with Shia began to travel among folks in line.

Tracking down the manager of the theater to get information about the wait was no help. "I can't comment about any of this," he barked at me. But after 10 minutes in line, a theater employee casually walked the line like a TSA agent repeating the following ...

"You have unlimited time in the theater. Because of that, there is no estimation we can give you of how long you'll be waiting on line. Once people leave, we will let more of you in. When you get in, do not use your phone or take any pictures. Shia will not talk to you — he's in the artist zone."

10 countries hoarding enormous mountains of gold (GLD, JNUG)

Say what you want about gold.

But central banks just can't get enough of the yellow metal.

For the third quarter of 2015, central banks continued to bulk up their gold reserves, adding 175 tonnes to official reserves, according to the World Gold Council.

Although this is a 3% drop year-over-year, it's important to note that 2014's Q3 numbers were at a record high of 179.5 tonnes. (So another way of looking at it is that 2015 almost equaled the record amount.)

Total net purchases for the first nine months of the year amounted to 425.8 tonnes. Russia remained the most significant purchaser this year. But China stole the show when, after years of silence, they decided to start reporting changes to their reserves more regularly.

Using the WGC's data, we put together a list of the biggest gold hoarders out there. Check them out below.

10. India

Official gold holdings:
557.7 tonnes

Percent of foreign reserves in gold:
5.6%

India and China are the world's largest gold consumers. Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that he wanted to "tap the stockpiles of the precious metal to trim physical demand and reduce imports by providing people with alternative avenues for investment," according to Bloomberg.

9. Netherlands

Official gold holdings:
612.5 tonnes

Percent of foreign reserves in gold:
55.8%

In late 2014, the Dutch central bank announced that it was repatriating a chunk of its gold reserves from the US, hoping the measure would have "a positive effect on public confidence,"according to The Wall Street Journal.

8. Japan

Official gold holdings:
765.2 tonnes

Percent of foreign reserves in gold:
2.2%

Japan's gold reserves were at just 6 tonnes in 1950, and its central bank registered its first serious jump in gold holdings in 1959, with purchases increasing by 169 tonnes from the previous year.

In 2011, the Bank of Japan sold gold to pump ¥20 trillion into the economy to calm investors after the tsunami and nuclear disaster.

People can tell these 9 things about you from your appearance

Pretty Woman

You're not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but that doesn't stop us from judging one another by our looks.

There's a lot a person will assume about you based on your physical appearance — from how trustworthy you are to whether you're an extrovert. Your appearance can also reveal things about your health, such as your likelihood of developing certain diseases.

Here are just a few of the things your body can reveal about you.

SEE ALSO: 9 things doctors can tell about your health just by looking at your eyes

CHECK OUT: Plastic surgery doesn't make your face more attractive, science says

People can (accurately) judge your personality from a photo.

They say first appearances can be deceptive. But people can tell a surprising amount about your personality from a photograph, one study found.

The study involved showing people photos of 123 undergrads at the University of Texas at Austin in two poses: One where they were told to face the camera with a neutral expression, and one in which they could pose however they wanted.

Then, strangers were asked to judge them on certain aspects of their personality. No matter what position they took, viewers were surprisingly accurate: While people were better at judging someone's extroversion, self-esteem, religiosity, agreeableness, and conscientiousness when they were spontaneous, they could also judge the first three traits when they were posed.

People judge your physical strength based on your facial bone structure.

Scientists recently did a study where they showed people photos of 10 different people with five different facial expressions, and asked them to rate how friendly, trustworthy, or strong the person in the photo appeared.

Not surprisingly, viewers tended to rank people with a happy expression as more friendly and trustworthy than those with angry expressions. But when it came to traits like physical strength, broad faces were seen as stronger.

Women are attracted to "manly" men during certain times of their cycle.

A woman's romantic preferences can vary over the course of her menstrual cycle, some research suggests. A 2010 study of 66 heterosexual couples found that women whose partners had less masculine faces said they were more attracted to other men when they were ovulating. By contrast, women with masculine-faced partners felt less likely to stray.

But that's not the whole story, though: Other studies suggest that women who are on the pill prefer men with less manly faces.

These are the simplest ways to make your Mac run faster — without having to upgrade the hardware (AAPL)

No matter how much you loved your Mac when you bought it, chances are it doesn't perform the same way it once did.

A few years can take a noticeable toll on any computer, but luckily there are some tips and tricks that can help bring it back up to speed.

Here are a few things to look out for that can make your overall Mac experience more smooth and efficient — without having to upgrade the hardware.

Reduce the number of apps that launch when you boot up.

If you have a bunch of different programs set to launch when you turn on your computer, it's going to take a while for your Mac to boot up. You can see exactly which apps are programmed to launch on start by clicking the Apple icon and navigating to System Preferences> Users and Groups> Login Items. In this list, you'll see all the items that start up with your computer. Check the boxes next to each app and click the minus button at the bottom of the window to remove them.

Check for software updates.

Often, software updates fix bugs and glitches that could be slowing your computer down. Check for any software updates that may be available for the version of OS X your computer is running on. You can do this by clicking the Apple icon in the upper-left side and selecting App Store from the drop-down menu. In most cases, your Mac will probably issue a desktop notification to alert you when an update is available.

Try restarting your computer.

It sounds obvious, but sometimes your laptop or desktop just needs a good restart to get back up to speed. Try restarting your computer before jumping ahead to other options.

Pizza Taste Off 4

Americans adore pizza.

According to a 2014 study by the US Department of Agriculture, about 1 in 8 Americans ate pizza on any given day. That's a lot of pizza.

While local pizzerias are always a good choice, there are millions of die-hard chain pizza lovers out there. These acolytes of the Pizza Big Three are steadfast in their preferences: Domino's, Pizza Hut, and Papa John's.

But the question is, from which chain to order?

It's a loaded question, and everyone has their own answer.

We decided to take the matter into our own hands and test the Big Three pizzas head-to-head to see who has the best pizza.

Who is crowned the classic-cheese champion, and who snags the supreme-pizza prize? Keep scrolling to find the results.

Our test has three categories: the classic cheese pizza, the supreme pizza, and breadsticks — the pizza palace essentials.

First, the cheese pizza choices — still hot and cheesy.

McDonald's Mozzarella Sticks v2 5

McDonald's announced yesterday during an investor meeting that they will be serving mozzarella sticks nationwide starting in 2016.

And the internet, ever opinionated, has plenty to say on the matter. Many are overjoyed, while others liken the announcement to a legendary American geopolitical crisis

The chain started testing them in Wisconsin over the summer, and they went over extremely well, especially for those looking for a small and quick snack.

We decided to taste test this momentous addition to the Golden Arches' menu to see how the sticks stack up.

The sticks are available at some locations already, but will have a national rollout next year. You get your choice of sauce – including good, old-fashioned marinara.

With only three sticks per box, it's a small serving. But at $1 a box, it's not a bad deal.

They smell delicious — cheesy and fried to perfection. But then again, what fried food doesn't smell great?

5 ways to make enough money on the side to quit your day job

$

woman commute

Nearly everyone dreams of quitting his or her day job, whether it's tomorrow, next year or in the next decade.

However, there is a wide chasm between "dreams" and "action" that many people never seem to cross — and it's usually due to finances.

Obviously, if you want to quit, you need to find another way to make enough income to pay your bills, save for the future and enjoy life.

But what's the best way to do this? How can you make enough "side income" now so you can quit your job in the near future?

Here are five great ways to make side income while still working your day job:

SEE ALSO: How to train your brain to get what you really want

1. Invest in real estate.

My eyes were first open to the idea of "passive income" after reading "Rich Dad Poor Dad" by Robert Kiyosaki. Although not a real-estate book, it taught me the value of owning assets that produce income, which led me to real estate.

Real-estate investing is not always passive, and not always easy, but it can be highly profitable. In addition, there are hundreds of ways to invest in real estate. For example, you could:

• Flip houses
Own rental houses
Become a "house hacker"
Own vacation rentals (Airbnb)
Rent out duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes
Buy and rent out apartment complexes

Real-estate investing is my favorite way to create side income because it runs like a locomotive. It might take a little time to build up, but once it's running, it goes a long way with less effort and is hard to stop.

2. Write a book.

Many people have dreams of writing a book, but very few ever do. They think it's too hard, that they don't know enough, don't have enough time, aren't smart enough or whatever other excuse they can come up with. But the truth is: you can write a book, and that book can help you make additional monthly income.

There are several avenues you can take when writing a book, and there is no "best route." For example:

You could write a series of shorter topic-specific books and publish them on Kindle.
You could self-publish through your own website and sell to your existing customers.
You could partner with a larger platform and sell to its audience (as I did).
You could work to get published through a major publishing company (probably the most difficult path).
You could record an audiobook and publish it on Audible.

Writing a book today is not as tough as it once was, as there are so many avenues with which you could publish. The keys are no longer held by elite publishing companies in New York City. The keys are now in your hands.

3. Sell a product on Amazon.

I'm slightly addicted to Amazon Prime, as my local UPS driver can attest to. It seems every day I have a package or two waiting at my doorstep — and it's usually from people just like you. Most of them probably never touch the product that I'm buying.

That's right: you no longer need to have a warehouse, inventory or employees to buy wholesale products and sell them at retail. Amazon has leveled the playing field and now anyone can sell products.

A friend of mine, Chris from UpFuel.com, decided to sell products on Amazon. He researched best-selling ideas, contacted a manufacturer in China and had the perfect model designed, had the product shipped to Amazon's fulfillment center in the United States and sells his product on the site, making thousands of dollars a month in profit.

The best part? Chris doesn't ever touch the product, and it largely runs on autopilot at this point.

Here's what 'business casual' really means

business casual

"I've really tried to learn the art of clothes, because you don't sell for what you're worth unless you look good."—Lady Bird Johnson

Your boss invites you to a conference. He sends an email letting you know the dress code is "business casual." You haven't got a clue what that means, so you take a chance and wear your new sundress and sandals.

You show up and you're completely underdressed. You're uncomfortable, and you worry about your boss feeling embarrassed too.

"It is critically important to be aware of dress codes, understand what they mean, and follow them," says Darlene Price, president of Well Said Inc. and the author of "Well Said! Presentations and Conversations That Get Results."

"Employees are obliged to comply with company standards," Price adds. "Oftentimes, that means maintaining a professional appearance in the office, at client sites, and at any business functions."

Price says during her 20-plus years working as an executive coach, one of the most frequent career roadblocks she has observed is inappropriate dress in the workplace.

"Many highly intelligent, well-qualified, capable men and women are often disqualified or dismissed because 'they don't sell for what they're worth,'" Price says. "They've left the 'business' out of 'business casual' and the lack of professional appearance holds them back.

"It's frustrating, because clothing certainly does not determine one's actual competence and credibility; it does, however, influence others' perception of those qualities — and that reality impacts career opportunities."

The problem is, most people don't have a clear understanding of the different dress codes today. For example, there is no agreement on the definition of the term "business casual."

"It depends on several factors including the industry, size of the company, number of employees, amount of interaction between employees and customers, geography, climate, culture, and average age of the workforce," Price says.

At most companies, the "business casual" dress code encourages employees to project a "professional, business-like image while enjoying the advantage of more casual and relaxed clothing," Price adds.

Appropriate business-casual dress typically includes slacks or khakis, dress shirt or blouse, open-collar or polo shirt, optional tie or seasonal sport coat, a dress or skirt at knee-length or below, a tailored blazer, knit shirt or sweater, and loafers, dress shoes, or nice sandals.

A blouse or dress shirt paired with khakis or a skirt typically fall under 'business casual.'

A dress shirt alone or worn under a sweater or sport coat is also perfectly acceptable. Cardigans can also be worn with dresses.

Dark jeans are fine so long as they have no holes and are paired with a sport coat or blazer and dressier shoes, like loafers or heels.

15 costs you shouldn't accept without putting up a fight

Haggling bargaining at a market

You'd be surprised at how many times you can drive the price down with a bit of tactful negotiating.

And, the success rate is shockingly high: 89% of people who have haggled were rewarded at least once, the Consumer Reports National Research Center found.

However, too many of us simply refuse to ask for a better deal — from 2010-2013, only 48% of people actually tried to bargain, that same survey found.

It can never hurt to ask, especially with these 15 costs:

Maintaining electronics and computers.

According to Dina Gachman, author of "Brokenomics: 50 Ways to Live the Dream on a Dime," people don't bargain nearly as much as they should.

Gachman recalls a time in which she was laid off, unemployed, and had run into some issues with her laptop. After she was told it would cost $250 just to have her laptop checked out by someone, she called the company's 1-800-number and used what she calls "trigger words" to lower the repair cost. These words include "inconvenience,""corporate responsibility,""loyal customer," and "please."

College tuition.

If you're a member of one of those families in which all the siblings end up attending the same school, personal finance blogger Len Penzo points out that some colleges are known to give discounted tuition or financial aid when multiple family members attend.

No siblings? Forbes suggests leveraging a high GPA for more scholarship money instead.

Mortgage rates.

Mortgage rates are fair game for bargaining — with a little legwork. "Shop around, get quotes, make sure your credit score is stellar, and you should be able to talk about lowering things like processing fees," Gachman writes.

If you have strong credit, use that as leverage — credit score is one of the most important factors in determining your mortgage rate.
