The holiday season offers the most prime opportunities to experience some quality binge-watching.

Don't spend these weeks with breaks getting to know your family better. Or rediscovering yourself at a wellness retreat. Instead, take this time to check off some real worthwhile goals from your list — like taking in hours of entertainment. That's something you'll never regret.

Business Insider put together a list of shows that will keep you both entertained and caught up on what's coming down the pop-culture pike. You'll always have something to talk about at parties and maybe, just maybe, you'll make others feel horribly insecure about their own lack of pop-culture prowess.

Have a really happy holiday season with these binge-worthy 13 TV shows and movie franchises:

"Black Mirror"

After British anthology series "Black Mirror" arrived to Netflix, it steadily found an American audience, and a rabid one at that. Even one of our greatest assets, Jon Hamm, deigned to star on its Christmas special last year.

Earning comparisons to "The Twilight Zone,""Black Mirror" explores the line between life and tech.

Netflix is producing the next season of "Black Mirror."

"Twin Peaks"

After a rocky start, Showtime is a bit behind on its revival of director David Lynch's "Twin Peaks." That's okay, because it gives you time to really soak in the show's two bizarre and twist-filled seasons before its 2017 launch date.

The two seasons are available now on Netflix.

"Gilmore Girls"

With Netflix working on a new season of the cult favorite show, here's your chance to find out why it's beloved by so many.

"Gilmore Girls" stars "Parenthood" actress Lauren Graham as Lorelai Gilmore, a young, single mother who's best friends with her daughter, Rory (Alexis Bledel). Things get complicated when Lorelai's estranged parents come back into the picture with a desire for a relationship with their granddaughter.

All seven seasons of the series are available on Netflix now.

These incredible undersea cables are what connect you to the worldwide web

If you thought your internet data and international phone calls were transmitted via satellite, you would be wrong. (It's okay, I was, too.)

Nearly all of that data actually travels on submarine cables stretching hundreds of thousands of miles along the ocean floor.

This animation shows just how many stretch from coast to coast to coast, carrying tweets, YouTube videos, phone calls, and banking transactions as they go.

Take a moment to appreciate just how pervasive undersea cables are, how they survive more than 25,000 feet below the water, and ultimately help you access this article on a distant server.

Contrary to popular belief, satellites carry less than 1% of human communications. Submarine cables carry the rest.

The global network of submarine cables is huge — more than 550,000 miles long.

If you stretched all the cables in the ocean end-to-end, they would be long enough to reach the moon and back — with slack to spare.

5 weekend jobs I'd do to earn quick cash

$

laptop roof

The economy is doing pretty well right now and that means you might already have a job. But precisely because the economy is strong, there is huge opportunity for you. The super cool thing is, you can bring in some big stacks of “Benjamins” working just a few hours on the weekend alone if you do it right.

You see, most people around you might already have a job – but none of them have enough time on their hands. And that’s your opening. You can lighten the load for your working brethren, free up their calendar, relieve some of their stress and make some serious coinage in so doing.  On top of that, you can easily build any of these ideas into a side business if you have just a little bit of entrepreneurial spirit.

Here are five services you can provide that most people need, are easy to market and can put lots of pesos in your pockets all at the same time. Let’s get going:

SEE ALSO: How anyone can save 20% more money

1. DVD converter

I’ve always loved this idea. Take people’s old video tapes and convert them to DVDs. Everyone knows they have to do this before their old VHS memories fade out, but nobody is doing it.

Yes, there are companies that provide these services but you can easily eat their lunch. Print up a bunch a flyers and pass them out in your neighborhood. Then, watch the orders flow in. Just make sure to deliver a great service. Offer free pick-up and delivery and emphasize that you are a neighborhood business with a complete money-back guarantee.

In order to get into this business you will need a little equipment but you should be able to buy a VHS – DVD combo player recorder for under $200. Once business takes off, hire a high-school kid to do the work while you focus on marketing. He or she will likely be able to do a better job than you anyway especially when it comes to editing.

2. House cleaner

I am amazed at how expensive it is to get our house cleaned and how bad a job most people do. If I needed the money this is absolutely something I’d do.

First, I’d do a little research on how to correctly clean a house like a pro (there are plenty of great vids and posts on this). I’d perfect my own technique and process and advertise by handing out flyers in the neighborhood emphasizing my attention to detail, professionalism and a guarantee not to leave the premises until the owner is delighted with the job.

Then I’d assemble a short manual, hire and train a few crews and put them to work under careful supervision. Cha Ching!

3. Bookkeeper

Let me tell you something from first-hand experience. It is i-m-p-o-s-s-i-b-l-e to hire a qualified, trustworthy, responsible, professional bookkeeper. I often need to find bookkeepers for my clients and in all the years I’ve only found one who knew what she was doing (and was responsible). Needless to say, she gets all my referrals and now she’s too busy to handle the flow.  Did I mention that she isn’t a CPA and doesn’t have a college degree?

Either teach yourself QuickBooks, take a few courses or do both. This is the software most CPAs want their clients to use and you do not need to be a rocket scientist to master this program. Then, contact a few CPAs and some local businesses. Let them know you are available and deliver fantastic professional service. Before long, you’ll have more work than you know what to do with.

This architect designed a cityscape where everyone works in rooftop coworking spaces

151204_CWa_The Endless Workplace (4)

People are flocking to live in cities and enduring hellish commutes in the process, and architect Clive Wilkinson is tired of it.

Well, sort of.

As part of a collaboration between his architecture firm and Flaunt Magazine, Wilkinson's team came up with an all-rooftop set of communal workspaces — known as The Endless Workspace.

Designed for a cityscape that's a hybrid of Silicon Valley and London, the Endless Workspace lets people take elevators from their bedrooms straight up to a communal rooftop office.

The designs are satirical — not actually for implementation — but oh, how we wish they were real.

Wilkinson was tasked with coming up with an urban environment that drew inspiration from London and Silicon Valley, two places where busy commutes are the norm.

Wilkinson took to the London rooftops to rebuild the working world out of everyone else's way.

It makes sense, especially since communal workspaces are quickly becoming a more prominent fixture in major cities around the world.

The web of rooftop workspaces features hollow circular green spaces that look to the city below as well as courtyards that receive ample sunlight.

According to the architecture firm, the elevator system solves the problem of marathon-long commutes without creating a second problem of isolating people in their homes.

The result: You work with people you know in your neighborhood, coming together throughout the day.

With the new concept, people go back to collaborating with people in disparate fields — a practice often referred to as "cross-pollination," the company said in a statement.

Meanwhile, without the flood of commuters each morning and evening, the underground rail systems are free to operate more smoothly.

People will be perched on their rooftops while the rest of city hums below.

5 bad habits that keep you from getting the best deal on anything you buy

$
0

Consumer Borrowing

With the busy shopping season upon us, you're probably striving to get bigger and better deals.

But there are some actions that actually hinder your buying power and cause you to overspend.

Here are five things you may be guilty of doing that prevent you from getting the best deal available.

SEE ALSO: 6 ways to make your money work for you

Lack of comparison research

One of the biggest mistakes is not shopping around or doing research before making a purchase. Too many of us believe that the price displayed is the lowest available, but this isn't always the case.

Sometimes stores will slash prices due to overstocked inventory, or a local region will be doing a promotion not offered anywhere else. It pays to take the time to research and comparison shop before making your final purchase.

Not knowing your credit score

Not knowing your credit score can greatly reduce how much your credit card limit will be, or how much you can apply for when taking out a personal loan. Your credit score is the most important number that financial institutions consider.

In addition, you could qualify for a lower interest rate (or be stuck with a higher one) depending on your credit score. This could save (or cost) you hundreds of dollars in interest fees and charges.

Rushing into a buy

Consumers tend to spend more money when they need something in a hurry.

Needing to buy something at the last minute isn't always avoidable, but strive to take your time, really evaluate whether or not you have to purchase this item right now, and wait for at least 24 hours to ensure you can find the best deal possible.

Also abide by this 24-hour rule before buying something — if you forget about it the next day, it wasn't really worth buying in the first place.

7 signs you're working a dead end job

$
0
0

meeting, boss

Not every job offers the potential for you to learn, grow, make more money, and climb the corporate ladder.

Whether your goals are monetary, skill-based, or just based on your enjoyment of your job, all of us want jobs where we're able to make progress over time.

The exact definition of a "dead end" job can be subjective; for example, I might see a job as a dead end if there's no room for promotion in the next five years.

You might see a job as a dead end if there aren't any opportunities to improve or expand your skill set.

The key underlying idea is that a dead end job offers no direct progress to your goals, now or in the future.

Determining whether you're in a dead end job can be tough, but look for these seven signs to point you in the right direction:

1. Your bosses and supervisors don't know your goals.

Think about your immediate supervisors, as well as your higher level bosses. Do they have any idea what you want or need in an employer?

Do they have any idea where you want to be in five years? If they do, that's a good first start--it means they value your goals and will likely help you to achieve those goals.

If they don't, it means they might not care about your individual career trajectory--and even if they do, they don't know enough to help you along the way.

2. You haven't seen a change in years (and don't anticipate one anytime soon).

Think about the most recent change you had in this organization, and "change" here means anything that can be listed as significant for your job. For example, a pay raise counts as a change.

A promotion or change in title counts as a change. Even a significant shift in responsibilities counts as a change.

If you haven't seen any changes in the last several years, and you don't anticipate any new changes on the horizon, it's a sign that things don't change quickly enough at this company, and it might be a dead end.

3. You're no longer challenged.

When you walk into work every day, do you feelsufficiently challenged by your assignments? Ideally, you'll be assigned tasks and projects that strike a balance between falling within your skill set but also challenging you creatively and intellectually.

If you've knocked all your tasks and projects out of the park for the past few years with nothing new or exciting in the pipeline, it could be a sign that there's no more room for growth in your current position.

If a job is too easy, you won't have the opportunity to improve yourself in any meaningful way.

Audi RS 7 2016

The Audi RS 7 is one of fastest cars with four doors and a trunk that money can buy. A few months back, Audi introduced the new RS 7 Performance edition, loaded with all kinds of go-fast upgrades.

Earlier this year, Business Insider spent a weekend behind the wheel of Audi's road-going rocket ship and absolutely loved it. Now there's a new and improved RS 7. We haven't been behind the wheel, but it looks even better and faster than before, based on what we saw at the LA Auto Show in November.

When it hits showrooms, the RS 7 Performance will be the top-of-the-line offering in Audi's A7 series.

Here's a closer look at the new Audi RS 7 Performance.

SEE ALSO: The M2 is the BMW sports car we've all been waiting for

To create the RS 7, Audi took their stellar A7 four-door coupe and turned up the volume on the power and performance technology.

Instead of the A7's supercharged V6 engine, the RS 7 has a 4-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 engine shared with Bentley's Continental GT and the Audi S8.

Although we didn't have ideal driving weather during our test of the standard RS 7, we can confidently say that this thing is fast.

In February 2008, Nick Wharton and Dariece Swift returned home to Canada from an all-inclusive vacation in Mexico.

"We felt like we got a taste of the tropics, living the dream," Swift remembers. "We did a day trip and took these ATVs out and went through the jungle and the local villages. and it was so different from home that it kind of triggered something."

That something came to a head about a month later. "Nick had a brutal day at work and said, 'That's it,'" Swift recalls. When he asked where she'd go if she could travel for a year, she was quick to answer: Southeast Asia.

Only nine months later, they sold their house, car, and most of their possessions, set off for Southeast Asia, and have been figuring out how to support their adventures as they travel ever since.

Now 30-year-old Wharton and 31-year-old Swift detail their adventures on their website, Goats on the Road, and here, they explain how they make it work.

13 science-backed ways to appear more attractive

$

Chris Hemsworth Suit

It pays to be pretty.

Research has found that attractive people earn up to 14% more money than their unattractive peers.

Fortunately, attraction relies on much more than your physical appearance. It's in the way you carry yourself, the folks you hang out with, and how you talk to people — plus a whole lot more.

Read on to find out what you can do to make yourself more appealing.

SEE ALSO: Why men may be more likely to tolerate unfairness from attractive women

DON'T MISS: The 27 jobs that are most damaging to your health

Be funny.

Multiplestudiesindicate that women are more attracted to men who can make them laugh.

In one small study, a psychologist asked three men to tell a joke to their friends at a bar while a woman sat at a nearby table. Then those men were instructed to approach the woman and ask for her number. After the man had left, an experimenter approached the woman and asked her to rate the man on attractiveness and intelligence and to indicate how much she would want to date the man long-term.

Results showed that the guys who told jokes were three times as likely to get the woman's number as the men who didn't. They were also rated more attractive and intelligent.

"The effect of a great sense of humor on women's attractions might be partially explained by the fact that funny people are considered to be more social and more intelligent, things that women seek in a mate,"anthropologist Gil Greengross writes.

Surround yourself with friends.

A 2014 study from the University of California at San Diego found that people were deemed to look better when they were in a group.

In one experiment featured in the study, 25 male and female undergrads looked at 300 photos of women's faces, once in a group photo and once in an isolated portrait. Another experiment repeated the same procedure with 18 undergrads looking at photos of men's faces. Results showed that participants rated both men and women significantly more attractive when they were pictured in a group.

This is possibly because our brains take the faces of a group of people in aggregate, making each face look more "average"— and attractive — as a result.

"Having a few wingmen or wingwomen may indeed be a good dating strategy, particularly if their facial features complement and average out one's unattractive idiosyncrasies," study authors Drew Walker and Edward Vul write.

Skip the small talk.

In a 1997 studyState University of New York psychologist Arthur Aron and colleagues separated two groups of undergrads and paired them off, giving each duo 45 minutes to answer a set of questions.

One question set was small talk, and the other was increasingly probing. The people who asked deeper questions felt more connected. One couple even fell in lovean intriguing, though probably insignificant, result.

7 cities with taxis and subway cars only for women

RTR3F646

From groping to catcalling to being followed home, women face all kinds of harassment on their daily commute. It's a global epidemic.

This year, researchers from Cornell University and Hollaback!, an organization that works to end street harassment, surveyed 16,607 women from 22 different countries, making it the largest analysis of its kind to date.

In the US, more than half of the respondents experienced sexual harassment in a city during the past year, and 30% on public transit.

As a temporary solution, women-only taxis and subways are popping up in cities around the world. While women shouldn't need special transport to avoid harassers, at least they can have peace of mind.

Here are seven cities with women-only transportation options.

City buses in Damanhour, Egypt.

Last week, the Egyptian city Damanhour designated six out of 66 city buses for women only. One is for women with disabilities.

The local government acted after complaints from women who had trouble using public transportation because men would push them, especially during rush hour.

"Women were often physically unable to reach the bus doors due to men pushing their way onto the buses," the city's governor Wahdan El-Sayed told Ahram Online.

SheRides in New York City.

SheRides is the one female-only transit option in the US, and operates in a city where less than 1% of taxi drivers are women. Similar to Uber, SheRides is an iOS app that allows women to order a ride with a female driver. Women can easily spot the vehicles from the giant, pink strip on the front bumper.

SheTaxi in Kerala, India.

She-Taxi, similar to NYC's SheRides, is India's first 24/7 women-only cab service. More than 50,000 women have used it since its launch last year. The creators of She-Taxi say they will launch "She-Bus" within the next few years.

People weighed in on the most common regrets in life, and some of their answers will make you cry

Hindsight is 20/20, as they say, and oftentimes it can lead to regret.

Some people have the philosophy that everything happens for a reason, and there is no point in having regrets.

But for so many of us, looking back on our lives can lead us to linger on one poignant moment or period when we wish we had done things differently, and that nagging question, "What if ...?," plays on repeat in our heads.

"This may sound a little melodramatic, but no matter how happy you are, at my age your regrets are countless,"writes Quora user Gary Teal in response to the question, "When people look back on their lives, what are common regrets they have?""You have made decades' worth of little miscalculations you can't completely erase from your memory, as well as a number of big mistakes that made life permanently harder."

Quora user Bradley Voytek points to a national survey about the regrets of a typical American, which found 13 common sources for regret. They are, in order: romance, family, education, career, finance, parenting, health, "other," friends, spirituality, community, leisure, and self.

Vaughn Bell at Mind Hacks notes that there are two ways people frame their regrets: The things they did that they wish they hadn't, and the things they wish they had done but didn't.

"The difference between the two is often a psychological one, because we can frame the same regret either way — as regret about an action: 'If only I had not dropped out of school;' or as a regret about an inaction: 'If only I had stayed in school.'

"Despite the fact that they are practically equivalent, regrets framed as laments about actions were more common and more intense than regrets about inactions, although inaction regrets tended to be longer lasting," Bell writes.

Here are some of the most common regrets as chronicled by Quora users (answers have been edited for clarity):

Romance

"I regret that I never fell in love with someone who was in love with me, when that would have been easy for me to do.

"I regret being like an old song sung by Buffy Sainte-Marie: 'Must I go bound and you so free, Must I love one who doesn't love me, Must I be born with so little art, As to love the one who would break my heart?'"—David Kahana

Children

"For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to have kids. But in my younger years, I foolishly assumed that unlike certain accomplishments like a career, the marriage and kids thing would just happen.

"Well, they didn't. I dated plenty of people but never even thought about making family a priority. Then, in my late 30s, a bout with ovarian cancer left me permanently infertile.

"I think about the kids I never had every day, several times a day. I have a great relationship with my nieces and nephews, and volunteer at a children's hospital on a regular basis, but it's just not the same to be around other people's kids. I would love to adopt or be a foster mother, and hopefully be in a financial and domestic situation that would make this feasible one day.

"But again, not the same. And it pisses me off when people say, "You're lucky you don't have kids, they're so much work, blah blah blah." Yes, but a lot of things in life that are worthwhile are also so much work.

"I think the mothering instinct is so strong in some women that the knowledge that one will never get a chance to give birth and raise their own child goes beyond regret. One that a bar chart cannot capture. I can deal with most of my other regrets in life but am having a hard time dealing with this one."—Caroline Zelonka

Parents

"I regret not choosing to spend more time with my parents in my twenties. I lost my mother in 2000, and I feel the loss of the friendship we never had.

"She was very demanding, very strict, and from the perspective of a young man, very unreasonable. It turned out, as I live through middle age, that most of the ideals I have today ended up being the ones she put on me.

"Sometimes, after a setback, I feel the impulse to call her, and in the second or so that it takes for me to realize she isn't alive to speak to any longer, I realize how much I still need her.

"You cannot negotiate with death. It is final, often sudden, and personal. The last night I had with her, at a hospice in Chicago, I was exhausted and asked her if she minded if I went home. She immediately whispered that absolutely, I should rest, and to be careful driving home. I curled her fingers around the nurses call button, and kissed her on the forehead. I remember I felt some relief that I was leaving.

"I know it didn't make a difference, leaving at that time, or leaving a few hours later. She was going to die either way. But reflecting on that moment today I know then that I didn't understand how precious those minutes were, and how a door was being closed that would never open again."—Jim Wagner

An unlikely duo has joined forces in order to figure out what millennials love.

For the third year in a row, Goldman Sachs' equity research team and Teen Vogue's fashion experts put together 2015's definitive "Teen Vogue-Goldman Sachs Love List"— a list of the top-20 brands that matter the most to "It Girls."

In order to determine the degree of "love-ability", the analysts scored each brand based on familiarity, affinity, and "word of mouth," or how much respondents discussed a brand relative to others — key in the era of Instagram.

Athletic brands shot up in popularity this year. Nike was in the top 5, and Adidas showed the largest gain in affinity out of any brand. Goldman doesn't touch on this, but it's worth noting that many millennial-popular starlets like Kylie Jenner routinely post photos of themselves in Adidas gear, which no doubt affected its ranking.

Beauty brands are "in the sweet spot" as they are "well-loved and well-owned."

On the flip side, fashion brands were "floundering" as "favorability metrics generally declined from last year." Mall-centric apparel brands like American Apparel and Hollister are struggling, and most hangbag brands are "falling flat."

Check out the full list below.

BMW i3

Reports surfaced a few months ago that Apple CEO Tim Cook has visited BMW in Germany to explore the possibility of using the automaker's compact electric "city car," the i3, as the basis for a possible Apple Car.

Subsequent reporting suggested that the i3's role in "Project Titan" had been put on hold. We were intrigued, however, so when BMW let us borrow an i3 for a weekend the past August, we jumped at the chance.

What would it be like to drive what could be a glimpse into Apple's automaking future?

As it turned out, we had the perfect trip planned for the i3: a little over 200 miles, round-trip, from suburban New Jersey to the Catskills in upstate New York. If Apple builds an Apple Car, it's expected that it will be electric, and biggest problem for electric cars to overcome is "range anxiety"— the fear that you'll run out of juice and be stranded.

Our i3 was the "range extended" version, equipped with a small gas motor than kicks in when the batteries are drained. It doesn't drive the wheels; rather, it generates electricity to power the motor. Coming in at around $46,000, this version of the i3 is good for 150 miles, according to BMW.

So how did what could be the Apple Car do on the journey? Read on to find out.

The i3 is a futuristic 4-door. But the rear doors are "suicide" doors — they open in the opposite direction as normal doors. The car can seat 4 people.

First order of business was to top off the charge. I had to pull it up in front of the my house due to some awkward issues with my garage. The charge cable plugs into a wall outlet and rejuices the battery VERY SLOWLY.

BMW has partnered with a company called ChargePoint to provide fee-based charging around the US. Depending on the type of charge station you find, getting fresh electrons into the i3 can be a lot faster that using an outlet at home. BMW can also set you up with the fast home-charging station.
