How To Make A Video Go Viral — Based On The Variables In This Algorithm

$
0
0

axe super bowlThere's no denying the power of a viral video.

The Dollar Shave Club is now a legendary example. The company, which sells $1 razors, made a low-budget video that went so viral it crashed the company's website almost immediately after its released. Currently with more than 9.6 million views, the ad's deadpan humor put the company on the map and led to $10 million in venture Capital funding.

While Dollar Shave Club hit the jackpot, just being funny isn't enough to guarantee going viral.

Unruly Media tracks the most-shared videos on the internet — there's a difference between watching a video because you're bored and liking something so much you share it with a friend — and has come up with an algorithm that allows advertisers to know whether their ads will blow up.

We talked to Cat Jones, Unruly's head of business, and she told us what advertisers have to do to make an ad go crazy on the internet.

Cat Jones of Unruly told us that no matter the sector, there are two things that are crucial to making a viral video:

"The intensity of the psychological response people feel when they see the ad," Jones said, "and the strength of the social motivation -- the reason that they have to share."

If a brand can make someone feel something really strongly (whether that feeling is overwhelmingly positive or negative) then that will give them a good reason to pass it on.

There are a number of psychological responses a company can hit. The first is the most obvious and, also, the hardest: BE FUNNY.

Unfortunately, a lot of people want to be funny. And a lot of people who think they're funny, aren't.

"It's hard for people to do well since it's been so used," Jones said. "That audience is quite discerning."

But if you're going to be funny, do it like this Unruly favorite. "Dumb Ways to Die" by McCann Melbourne has been viewed 43 million times and shared 3 million times:

Instead going for the funny bone, try to pull at the heart strings. Warmth is another viral factor.

"We're seeing a shift to that really warm nostalgia," Jones said.

She used the example of Budweiser's "Brotherhood" ad, about a Clydesdale horse and his trainer, that swept the Super Bowl. "That was warmth and happiness ... and it was the second most shared Super Bowl ad of all time," she said.

"Brotherhood" by Anomaly has been viewed 14 million times and shared more than 2.6 million since February:

Another viral example of a warm ad is P&G's "Best Job" commercial for the Olympics. It was viewed 12 million times and shared 2 million times:

Giant Honeycomb Will Peer Back Deeper Into Space Than Ever Before

James Webb Telescope

The James Webb telescope will launch in 2018 as the successor to the long-running Hubble Telescope, which has been taking pictures of the early universe for 22 years.

The giant space telescope will travel one million miles from Earth, and will hopefully be able to see the first galaxies that formed in the early universe, more than 13 billion years ago.

The James Webb isn't a replacement to the Hubble, although it will be able to look farther back in time using infrared— the spectrum in which light from more distant objects can be seen.

An awesome full-scale model of the space telescope was on display at South by Southwest this weekend, an annual conference in Austin, TX.

Although the real James Webb is being built and its parts tested at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, the full-scale model was constructed in Austin, Texas for South by Southwest.

Here are some of the nuts and bolts required to build the JWST model.

The model was put together piece-by-piece by a San Antonio rigging company.

Property Tycoon Buys One Of London's Biggest Homes For A Record $120 Million

one cornwall terrace londonNearly a year and a half after it hit the market for a whopping $160 million, London's One Cornwall Terrace has sold to British property tycoon Marcus Cooper, according to The Sun.

He reportedly paid $120 million for the home, significantly less than its asking price. Even with the discount, it's a record price for a terraced home, The Sun reports.

The 21,500-square-foot mansion, near Regent's Park, is named after King George IV, who was originally the Duke Of Cornwall. It has seven bedrooms, nine bathrooms, and 11 reception rooms.

It was the official London residence of the New Zealand High Commissioner from 1955 until the 1970s, and was later occupied by squatters, according to The Sun.

But it later went a full restoration, and now includes a sports complex with an indoor swimming pool, iPad-controlled lighting, and a 40-meter landscaped garden.

Cooper, founder of Marcus Cooper Group, is a property developer in London whose portfolio includes residential and commercial properties throughout the city.

Here's Where All The Hot Foreclosure Deals Are Hiding

$
0
0

homesThe demand for foreclosed homes is so high that investors have picked clean some of the most obvious markets – Phoenix and Las Vegas, for example.

But there are still deals if you look in other metropolitan areas in the United States, according to RealtyTrac, an online marketplace for foreclosure properties based in Irvine, Calif.

By adding up each metro's inventory of foreclosed homes, foreclosure sales as a percentage of all sales, average foreclosure discount, and the annual increase in foreclosure activity, RealtyTrac found the Top 10 best places to buy a foreclosed home.

10. Chicago – 46 percent discount on foreclosed homes

Typically, real estate investors want to put their money in growing markets that haven't been discovered yet.

Metropolitan Chicago may not have the greatest job growth – half the nation's average annual rate – but its housing market is ripe with opportunities. After falling 37 percent from its housing bubble peak, median prices have rebounded less than 4 percent, according to the S&P/Case-Shiller housing price index.

The metro area boasts a healthy 36 months' supply of foreclosed and soon-to-be-foreclosed homes and they're selling at a whopping 46 percent discount of other home sales. That's the biggest discount of any of RealtyTrac's Top 10 best metros to buy a foreclosed home, helping Chicago secure the No. 10 spot.

"The Midwest has been doing a lot better," says Ken Fears, an economist with the National Association of Realtors (NAR). Nationally, "it's hard not to be upbeat when you look back, historically speaking. We're at the nascent level of what will be a protracted, slow, but steady growth in the economy."

When it comes to foreclosures, he suggests looking at judicial states – states that involve the courts in foreclosures, which typically slows the process of moving properties to market. The great wave of foreclosures has already peaked in nonjudicial states like California and Arizona. But in judicial states like Florida and New York, a second wave of foreclosed homes is starting to hit the market, keeping prices low and investor interest high.

9. Orlando, Fla. – 19 percent discount

Unlike Chicago, Orlando’s strong points aren’t deep discounts or a vast supply – the metro has only a 19 percent discount on foreclosures and a smaller inventory of foreclosed homes to sell. But it has other things going for it, including a 64 percent jump in foreclosure activity between 2011 and 2012.

Orlando’s economy is also on the rebound. Thecentral Florida metro's employment growth matches the national average. The median sales price for a single-family home has jumped 8.5 percent in the past year, according to the NAR. One reason: Hedge funds, investors, and institutional buyers are moving into Orlando to scoop up foreclosed properties the way they already have in other markets.

Foreclosure sales were nearly a third of all home sales last year. After investors poured money into Las Vegas and Phoenix, home prices jumped 20 percent and 34 percent in those areas, respectively. Thus, metro Orlando probably offers a limited window for getting a great deal in housing.

8. Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – 28 percent discount

The Queen City of the Hudson River is home toVassar College, an IBM plant, and foreclosed homes – lots of them.

The metro area has a 92-month supply of bank-owned properties, the second-biggest backlog on RealtyTrac's Top 10 list. They're selling at a 28 percent discount. The area's employment grew 1 percent over the past 12 months and 2.5 percent over the past three years, which trails the national average of 4 percent.

The median housing price is just under $200,000 and is up 4 percent over the past year, according to Trulia, an online real estate information site.

Linden Estate Hamptons

Southampton's Linden Estate is back on the market, this time for $45 million through Corcoran Real Estate Group.

According to Curbed Hamptons, it was previously listed for four long years before supposedly being sold to James H. Clark, co-founder of Netscape, and his Australian swimsuit model wife last summer for an undisclosed price.

But it seems the title never changed hands, as Curbed reports the home is still registered to the original owners — former Esprit executive Juergen Friedrich and his wife. And now the 18,000-square-foot estate is up for grabs once more.

Originally built in 1915 by architect Grosvenor Atterbury, the house has both an indoor and outdoor pool, a grass tennis court, gym, carriage house, and an impressive 12 bedrooms.

The mansion was available to rent for $850,000 a month last year, and was listed in July for $49 million.

It's Hard To Believe How Drastic The Changes To Facebook Have Been Over The Years (FB)

Young Mark Zuckerberg in sepia tones

Facebook has made some pretty significant changes to its web platform since launching back in 2004.

What started off as a place for college students to connect with each other has grown into the world's largest social network.

In Facebook's maturation, its design has also evolved quite a bit. (Although it seems that every time Facebook makes even a subtle change, users become outraged.)

Now, as teenagers are beginning to move away from Facebook, the social network seems to be coming up with new ways to get people to spend more time on the site.

In light of Facebook recently unveiling its new News Feed, we thought it would be worth taking a look at how Facebook has changed over the years.

Remember when Facebook was called Thefacebook? It started at Harvard and slowly opened up to other colleges.

Before the News Feed launched, Facebook was essentially just a collection of disconnected profiles back in 2005.

A Bizarre Look At Life In Guantanamo Bay Detention Center

$

guantanamoThe U.S. Detention Center at Guantanamo Bay is no doubt an unpleasant place to find oneself.

Just recently guards used rubber bullets to disperse a crowd of inmates who were throwing rocks at the guard tower and one who was trying to climb the fence. There have been plenty of reports of prisoner abuse too since the terrorist detention center was established in 2002.

Nonetheless it is a U.S. government facility run with perhaps surprising attention to things like inmate nutrition and recreation.

Business Insider's own Robert Johnson will be there this week to provide exclusive coverage.

In the meantime, check out some excellent new photos of the inside from Reuters' Bob Strong.

Guantanamo isn't new: the U.S. has had a presence there since the 1970s.

Starting in 2002, the Navy-operated detention facility became a home to prisoners in the war on terror.

And so too the subject of much debate in America around the justification for imprisoning someone without charge.

This Is What Movies Would Look Like Without Visual Effects

Last month, visual effects (VFX) company Rhythm & Hues filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The studio helped bring a ravenous Bengal tiger to the big screen in Oscar winner "Life of Pi."

However, after more than 200 layoffs, some 400 VFX artists protested during the 85th Academy Awards.

The recent bankruptcy filing of Rhythm & Hues is the latest blow to the VFX community which has taken a hard hit in the past year.

Last September, VFX studio Digital Domain Media Group also filed for bankruptcy before being bought in part by Galloping Horse and Reliance Capital.

Now, some VFX artists have suggested a walk out later this week on 3/14 ("Pi" day) to show support for creating a union.

If it weren't for visual and special effects crews, a lot of Hollywood's biggest blockbusters would be unwatchable.

From "Life of Pi" to "The Dark Knight Rises," we've gathered together images from visual effects studios Industrial Light & Magic and Rhythm & Hues and visual effects software company Imagineer Systems to show what popular movies would look like without added effects.

THE CHINA SEVEN: The Huge Megatrends That Will Define China's Next Decade

china women

For nearly two decades, we've counted on China to be the perpetual growth machine that would power the world's economy.

But as many have observed, that era is slowly coming to an end.

Jefferies recently published a massive 426-page report that boils down what we can expect in this next phase of China's development.

CLICK HERE TO SEE THE PRESENTATION >

Here's a portion of the bank's summary of the presentation, called "Jeffries China 2025: A Clear Path to Prosperity":

Academics have already pointed out that China has hit ‘a Lewis turning point’ (China has run out of cheap labor) and/or growth will eventually slow since the economy has ‘less catch-up left’ as technological limits are appearing (Solow Growth Model).

Equally, China will need to begin developing its own technology rather than importing innovation. This can be costly and far more difficult to achieve success. It is very difficult for a country to invest over 50% of its GDP productively ... [And] demographics will begin to work against the economy as the 15 to 24 cohort falls by 20% over the same period.

Jefferies asked its top China analysts to come up with "megatrends" that will define the Middle Kingdom.

They came up with seven: urbanization, consumerization, slowing trade, slowing
fixed asset investment, financial reform, information mobility and service sector development.

We have summarized their projections here.

Megatrend 1: China is entering a new demographic phase.

14 Gadgets That Wall Street Loved Before The Bloomberg Terminal

But you might say it's not the size of your monitor that matters, but how you use the information on it.

We wanted to go back to see how trading was done before you could even compare your Bloomberg to anyone else's.

That is, before Michael Bloomberg was even born.

With the help of images from the American Museum of Finance in New York, we put together a brief, visual history of trading technology, from ticker tape to the present.

Before it became the New York Stock Exchange, brokers called the main trading room downtown "The Curb Exchange".

Photo from 1915.

That's because half the time, deals would literally be conducted from the curb via hand signals — check it out...

The first stock ticker debuted in November, 1867. It was basically a modified telegraph receiver — someone typed in stock quotes on one end, and they were instantly printed onto the machine's ticker tape at the other. Eventually Thomas Edison patented a better version, and their use exploded.

Meet The Beautiful Brazilian Actress That George Soros Is Suing For Defamation And Allegedly Throwing A Lamp At Him

Adriana Ferreyr

Back in 2011, Brazilian soap opera star Adriana Ferreyr filed a $50 million lawsuit against her ex, billionaire hedge fund legend George Soros, claiming he renegged on a $1.9 million apartment he promised her.

The details of Ferreyr's suit were shocking when it came out.

Ferreyr said they dated for five years and she was dumped in 2010. She was 27 at the time and he was 80.

During a romantic reunion, she said Soros whispered that he gave the apartment he allegedly promised her to another woman.

She claimed that he slapped her across the face and attempted to choke her, according to the New York Post's report citing court documents. The suit also claimed Soros attempted to stike her with a glass lamp, but missed and she ended up cutting her foot.

Now Soros is countersuing the Brazilian beauty for defamation and assault, the New York Post reports.

According to the report, Soros claims that it was Ferreyr who threw the lamp and hit him on the forearm. He also claims that he did not hit her and that she cut her foot on a shard of glass on the floor from the broken lamp.

Last fall, Soros, 82, got engaged to his 40-year-old girlfriend, Tamiko Bolton. Bolton is the woman Soros had given the apartment to, according to the Post.

We all know Soros, so now let's get to know Ferreyr better.

She's famous for her star role on "Marisol", a popular Brazilian soap opera.

She's got beauty, brains and talent

Brazilian soap opera star, Adriana Ferreyr, was born on May 18, 1983 in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.

She is the daughter of a Brazilian real estate developer and engineer.  Her maternal great-grandfather, Esmeraldo Borges Nery, was the biggest landowner and rancher in the city of Iguai in Bahia, Brazil.

Ferreyr currently resides in New York City.

How Samsung Came From Nowhere To Ambush Apple And Become The World's Biggest Smartphone Seller

models holding samsung galaxy s iii

Samsung is an old company.

In fact, it started as a dried fish exporter in Korea way back in 1938.

But it wasn't until recently that Samsung's name started being used in the same breath as tech giants like Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon.

Most of that is thanks to Samsung's wildly popular and profitable mobile division that makes smartphones and tablets. What was once a run-of-the-mill handset maker is now second in brand power only to Apple.

And by many estimates, Samsung now ships more smartphones than any other manufacturer.

As Samsung prepares to announce its latest flagship phone, the Galaxy S4, this week, we took a look at how it got to where it is today.

Before we dive into mobile, it's important to mention that Samsung has a long history of making all kinds of electronics, most notably televisions. Along with Sharp and LG, Samsung consistently makes the best displays for HD televisions.

Samsung is also doing interesting things with Web-connected Smart TVs. It unveiled a new interface for its TVs at CES 2013 that helps you find content easier.

Behind the scenes, Samsung makes a lot of its own components such as processors and displays for mobile devices. It sells these components to a lot of companies, including Apple. All these extra areas of business plus its wildly profitable mobile division mean Samsung has deep pockets to market its products.

10 Highest-Paying Temp Jobs

One way to get a foot in the door of a desirable employer is to get hired as a temp.

This year, 40 percent of employers plan to hire temporary and contract workers, compared to 36 percent last year, according to an annual forecast by CareerBuilder (an AOL Jobs sponsor).

See the jobs >

Of these companies, 42 percent plan to offer some of their temporary workers permanent, full-time work.

Employers turn to temporary workers when they need to quickly ramp up operations in response to rising demand for their services or goods, says Eric Gilpin, president of the career site's staffing and recruiting group. "For job seekers, it's a great way to build relationships with employers and expand your resume, and is often an in-road into permanent placement within firms," he says.

What's more, many temp jobs are well-paying, providing wages that top $25 an hour (which during the course of year would top $50,000, based on a 40-hour workweek.) Using data from CareerBuilder, Economic Modeling Specialists and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, AOL Jobs has compiled a list of the highest-paying temp jobs, pulled from more than 90 national and state employment resources. (Note: the median wages noted for each occupation are those paid to workers regardless of whether they are permanent or temporary employees.)

PeekAnalytics, a company that analyses social media demographics, took a deep dive through tweets published by Twitter users during the SXSW conference in Austin, Texas, to see who exactly was at the meeting.

Needless to say, a lot of ad execs were there.

About 71,000 attendees created 109,000 tweets with the #SXSW hashtag, PeekAnalytics found. The company's database allowed it to break down who made those tweets, how much they earned, who they worked for, and where they lived.

One big surprise: Young execs from Silicon Valley tech startups are not over-represented at SXSW. Rather, the predominant demographics are middle-aged male ad execs from Austin itself.

Here's the data.

The 71,000 attendees' tweets were exposed to a potential audience of 65 million people.

It's a sausage-fest: SXSW goers are mostly men, mostly between the ages of 26 and 45.

SXSW is not that interesting to young people: People who follow SXSW attendees on Twitter are mostly middle-aged ...
