I Just Bought My First Pair Of Warby Parker Glasses — It Was Super Easy And Cheap

Megan Warby Parker Glasses

Recently, Business Insider spoke with Warby Parker's experts about how to find the right type of glasses for your face.

Turns out, I needed new glasses, too. So when I toured the SoHo showroom, I decided to see what it was like to buy glasses with the trendy brand.

I tried on about four different pairs before finding the ones that fit me perfectly. The experience was really easy and sociable, as I spoke with Warby Parker associates about what looked best as I shopped.

Ultimately, I was impressed with the level of quality, customer service, and especially the price ($95 for prescription lenses with anti-scratch and anti-reflective coating).

Note: I purchased the glasses with my own money and received no discount from Warby Parker.

Since I was already going to Warby Parker's SoHo showroom, I decided to try the glasses on there, even though the company does most of its business online.

The NYC showroom was on the fifth floor, inside Warby Parker HQ.

The walls were lined with glasses, but I made my way over to this table, which had the brand's most popular frames.

Sosh is all about curation and it believes in the ideal, less is more.

The app has already gained a lot of momentum in San Francisco and is launching in New York City today. Sosh will extend its reach to Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles, and Seattle in the near future.

Click here to jump straight to a tour of Sosh >

Sosh is the product of astrophysicist Rishi Mandal who is also a former NASA employee and ex-Googler.

"Sosh understands how humans work, it focuses on beautiful photos and really good, short informative descriptions," Mandal said in an interview.

In San Francisco Sosh already has great response, in fact, "1 in 8 adults in San Francisco are Sosh members," Mandal said.

Mandal describes Sosh as a personal concierge that "really gets to know you and goes well beyond just your interests."

Behind the scenes, Mandal and his team have built an impressive algorithm that trims away the fat from the most credible reviews and articles written about a event or place. It's then curated by a human editor who will sometimes write an article of his specifically tailored for the app.

"Sosh stands out because it gets very specific, its not just a list of venues and dishes," Mandal says.

Sosh is available for free on iPhone.

Sosh is a free download from Apple's App Store. It is currently only available for the iPhone.

Let's create an account so that we can tell Sosh exactly what we like and don't like.

Sosh's mission isn't to bug you with daily deals or emails; it just wants to show you the best places around in your city.

8 Countries Where It's Dangerous For Women To Travel

$

Bogota street scene Columbia

We've seen an alarming number of stories about sex attacks on female travelers in recent weeks, from a Swiss tourist who was gang-raped in India to an American student who was raped on a van in Rio de Janeiro.

It doesn't mean that women shouldn't visit foreign places or that no parts of those countries are safe. But women traveling in these areas should do so with extreme caution and a knowledge of the culture.

We rounded up eight popular tourist destinations where women should be extra cautious, based on reports from Human Rights Watch, the State Department, and crime reports in the media.

India

From the Taj Mahal to river boat cruises, India's tourism industry generates $17.7 billion each year.

But the recent gang rapes of a Swiss tourist and a New Delhi student, and a British tourist jumping from her window for fear of being raped have caused tourism to drop 35 percent since December.

And Human Rights Watch writes that reports of violence against women have been increasing, and "the government had yet to properly investigate and prosecute sexual abuse in police custody."

Brazil

Rio de Janeiro is billed as the most popular tourist destination in the Southern Hemisphere, but women should be on alert after an American tourist was raped in a van while her French boyfriend was handcuffed, AP reports.

The three suspects were arrested, but Brazil is known for its a machismo culture and history of gender-based violence, according to Human Rights Watch.

It will be hosting next year's World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.

Turkey

Tourists in Turkey largely flock to historical sites in Istanbul or the country's gorgeous seaside resorts.

But violence against women is a major problem in Turkey. The State Department reports that the Embassy and Consulates have received numerous reports of crimes against women, particularly incidents involving "date rape" drugs.

The police and courts also have a bad track record with helping women who have applied for protection orders against their attackers, according to Human Rights Watch.

And an American woman traveling alone in Istanbul was killed in February.

The Complete History Of False Threats From North Korea

$

kim il sungNorth Korea is threatening Seoul again, this time over a jointly controlled factory.

The Democratic People's Republic also says it is restarting its nuclear reactor, five years after shutting it down.

But a survey of 50 years of North Korean bellicosity shows nothing major is likely to happen.

We went back and pulled all the major headlines created by North Korean bluster against the South since the end of the Korean War.

As you'll say, there are exactly zero violent outbreaks of any consequence.

In some ways we shouldn't be surprised by all the threats: the conflict never officially ended. Instead, an armistice was signed when the U.N. withdrew troops in 1953.

And there is a new dimension this time around i n the form of the North's brand-new leader, Kim Jong-un

But after five decades, it seems safe to say that we'll get through this one — and the next — in one piece.

Hostilities had ended by 1954. But just four years later it seemed like there'd barely been any progress.

And by '66, skirmishes had begun breaking out again.

Kim Il Sung, who ran the country during this time, can be credited with starting the trend of periodic bluster, which was mostly came from frustration over American forces' ongoing presence in the South. He ended up ruling until his death in 1994.

10 Things Men Shouldn't Wear After 30

$
0
0

nike dunksAs you transition from your 20s into your 30s and beyond, your wardrobe may have to evolve.

There are just some style elements that you may have been able to pull off at a college party that you'll look ridiculous trying to pull off now.

#10: Visors

Paul Rudd's character in Forgetting Sarah Marshall wore a visor. Why? Because he was an absolute dolt. If you're afraid of the sun getting in your eyes, go buy some sunglasses. No man should wear the same headgear that the guy who restocks the relish at Nathan's wears. And don't even get me started on wearing a visor backward. That's almost punishable by death.

#9: Ed Hardy Shirts

There is simply no justifiable excuse for a 30-year-old man to wear a T-shirt with a goddamn bedazzled dragon on it. Nothing says "Pathetically clinging to youth" quite like a middle-age man wearing Ed Hardy clothing. Remember a few years back when a post-divorce Jon Gosselin from Jon & Kate Plus 8 was, well, relevant? What was that dope wearing in damn near every paparazzi photo? That's right -- an awful, tacky, shiny, obnoxiously loud Ed Hardy T-shirt. Please, guys, the world doesn’t need another Jon Gosselin. In fact, I'm more or less positive that we didn't need the first one.

#8: Bright Sneakers

Adults can wear sneakers with colors on them. That's fine. We don't live in a black and white world. But there's just something about a 30-year-old guy wearing a pair of electric yellow sneakers with neon green laces that doesn't quite look right. Tone it down.

10 Of The World's Best Places To See Stunning Sunrise Views

$

Angkor WatLet’s face it: Winter has left us chilled, pallid and perhaps a little less than energized. But the arrival of the vernal equinox on March 20—the first day of spring for the Northern Hemisphere—brought the promise of warmer temperatures and brighter days.

Skip ahead to see the most stunning sunrise views >

Historically, pagans aligned this turn in season with the theme of rebirth, both spiritually and agriculturally. Likewise, many pagan deities were associated with renewal and rejuvenation. Egyptians looked to Hathor, daughter of the sun god Ra, who bore a golden solar disk between her horns. Greeks turned to Aphrodite of Cyprus, who is associated with love and fertility. And the Saxons honored Ostara, the goddess of springtime and the namesake of Easter.

Perhaps our ancestors were on to something. (Who doesn’t link the spring and summer months with growth and positive energy?) So take a cue from nature and begin the season of renewal with a visit to a place that celebrates and accentuates the beauty of the morning horizon. Soak in the silhouettes of Cambodian temples in Angkor Wat or peer out at the waters over the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Take a walk by India’s Ganges River and see one of the world’s greatest tributes to romance, the Taj Mahal, or travel to the South Pacific archipelago of Tonga, where islanders are among the world’s first to see the sun rise each day. Each of our 11 favorites is bound to be enlightening.

More from Departures:

Angkor Wat, Cambodia

It’s only fitting that the Hindu deity Angkor Wat was erected for—Vishnu—would have a connection to the sun. Although he is known as “the Protector” today, Vishnu is referred to as the Sun God in ancient Hindu scriptures. And although Angkor Wat has since become a Buddhist site, it remains one of the world’s best vantage points for a sunrise.

Book a room at La Résidence d’Angkor, a lavish riverside resort located near both the majestic temples and Siem Reap’s vibrant markets. The hotel offers a daybreak tour of Angkor Wat, with an optional breakfast picnic or an early-morning water blessing, in which a monk bestows fragrant flowers on guests and blesses them against the backdrop of ancient temples. For the full experience, schedule a meditation session with a Cambodian monk.Rooms start at $280; River Rd.; 855-63/963-390;

Bali, Indonesia

Bali’s gorgeous seascape is perfect for the romantically inclined. Book a room at the Amankila, a cliffside resort perched high in the hills overlooking the Lombok Strait and the volcanic eastern coastline.

The resort’s 35 thatched-roof suites embody refuge and relaxation; each suite is elevated and connected to the main hotel by tiny walkways. Start the day with a combination of light cardio and yoga, or opt for a sunrise cruise up the coastline for radiant views of Mount Rinjani, a volcano on the island of Lombok. Eat breakfast onboard and try your hand at fishing on the tranquil ride back. Another reason to set your alarm? A cooking class at dawn includes a guided market tour during which guests can handpick ingredients to cook an authentic Indonesian feast. Rooms start at $950; Manggis; 62-363/41333; amanresorts.com.

Great Barrier Reef, Bedarra Island, Australia

Located just off the coast of Mission Beach, Bedarra Island is a secluded alternative to Cairns, the city where most tourists end up when seeking out Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. With a maximum capacity of 14 guests, Bedarra Island has all the amenities of a large resort combined with the intimacy of a bed-and-breakfast.

Soak up the sun on a nearby deserted island, book a private deep-sea fishing charter or explore the lush rainforest surrounding the hotel. The privately owned island has seven villas, each nestled away with private beaches and commanding views of the reef. Sustainability is important here, so expect fresh produce from the island’s garden, water-saving devices and a new off-grid hybrid solar system. Rooms start at $990; Bedarra Island; 61-7/4047-4747; bedarra.com.au.

These Are The Best States To Make A Living

$

oklahoma natural gasMaking a good living is tough these days. But precisely how tough it is may depend on where you live.

Earning a decent wage, staying ahead of inflation and coping with taxes are some of the challenges American workers face. If they can succeed at all of this and actually enjoy their jobs, it would be a nice bonus. So MoneyRates.com has identified the 10 states where employees may be most likely to accomplish these things.

For the third consecutive year, MoneyRates.com has conducted a study of the best and worst states for making a living. Using average wage and unemployment data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, cost of living figures from C2ER (formerly ACCRA) and state tax information from Tax-Rates.org, MoneyRates.com calculated an average income figure for each state that includes adjustments for taxes, inflation and the chances of finding a job in that state.

Then, these figures were furthered adjusted according to each state's Workplace Environment rankings from the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index poll. These factors provide both a quantitative and qualitative basis for the rankings that follow.

1. Washington

The state of Washington starts workers out on the right foot with an average wage of more than $50,000 a year -- one of the highest in the nation. That high pay is more than enough to overcome a cost of living that is slightly above average, and workers get to keep more of that pay because Washington does not have a state income tax.

To cap it all off, Washington residents gave their work environments an above-average ranking in the Gallup-Healthways poll.

2. Virginia

Virginia's strengths include a high average income, a low cost of living and low unemployment.

This has been a consistently winning combination for the state: Virginia has ranked in the top five states for making a living in each of the three years MoneyRates.com has done this study. It even ranked No. 1 in the 2012 study.

3. Colorado

A relatively high average income and moderate inflation are enough to help Colorado do well on quantitative factors, and having the third-best ranking for work environment gives them an extra boost.

These Kings Of 'Close Air' Support Protect US Troops In Ground Wars

$

A-10 thunderbolt warthog cannonAt the height of fighting during the Korean War in 1950, American troops faced artillery barrages, bitter winter cold, and massive human waves of Communist troops.

But they had a secret weapon: aircraft overhead that could slam enemy forces.

Gen. Douglas MacArthur, the commander of U.S. forces at the time, said the close air support had "perhaps never been equaled in the history of modern war."

If a serious ground war (however unlikely) did break out on the Korean peninsula again, the Hermit Kingdom would be facing an even more deadly American opponent.

Closely following the air war, the ground element would sweep north — working in tandem with those same air assets.

The use of close air support — aircraft to directly support troops on the ground — goes all the way back to World War I, except it's gotten much better since then. We spoke with a number of combat veterans of Afghanistan and Iraq and asked them what they like to see when the fighting starts.

Most troops on the ground patrol confident that air power will back them up if things go south.

But when a firefight kicks off, they'll immediately lay down fire with their personal weapons ...

... As some grab the most powerful weapon: the radio.

Ten Galling Tax Loopholes That Cost The US Government Billions Each Year

$
0
0

learjet 85 private jet luxury

It's tax time, and most Americans are trying to figure how much they owe the IRS.

Still, many corporations and wealthy individuals have already prepared for the big day by assiduously spending money in deliberate ways to minimize their tax liability.

The result is billions in lost revenue for the government every year.

These are just some of the most galling tax deductions that are perfectly legal.

Corporations can avoid paying taxes on U.S. profits with the "Double Irish" arrangement.

Several major U.S. corporations dodge domestic taxes by moving profits internationally to tax havens.

For example, a company can utilize the "double Irish" formula to minimize their U.S. taxes.

If the profits from the sale of a good stayed in the U.S. they would be taxed at the federal 35 percent rate. However, some companies sell the intellectual property rights to an Irish subsidiary in order to minimize tax obligations.

The profits from that U.S. sale are paid overseas to the Irish subsidiary. As long as the Irish subsidiary is controlled by managers elsewhere — for instance, a Caribbean tax haven — the profits can move around the world without a dime of taxation.

At this point, the profits are moved to a nation with no tax, skirting around the U.S. 35 percent rate.

Source: NYT

They can also avoid taxes on international profits by expanding the "Double Irish" to include the "Dutch Sandwich."

This is the "Double" part of the Double Irish, and also entails a trip through the Netherlands.

When the same company's product is sold overseas, that profit is routed to a second Irish subsidiary, Since Ireland has treaties with the Netherlands to make inter-European transfers tax free, the profits are then routed through the Netherlands, and then back to the first Irish subsidiary, and then to the no-tax Caribbean Island.

As a result, the U.S. company never has to repatriate the money and they never has to pay taxes on the products.

Source: NYT

The carried interest loophole allows people who work in investing to skirt federal income tax rates.

Carried interest — profits made by private equity investment managers, hedge funds, venture capitalists and real estate investment trusts — constitutes a major source of income for many financial professionals.

However, carried interest isn't taxed as income. Instead, it's taxed at the capital gains rate, which at 15 percent is considerably less than the top bracket tax rate of 39.6 percent that many of the financial professionals would pay.

Why Egypt Is Still An Awesome Place To Visit [PHOTOS]

Cloth Market Cairo

I'm leaving Cairo today after spending just over a week doing everything I could to understand the city and the people who live here. There's been drama, eye-opening experiences, and more than once when, "Wow," slipped from my lips unexpected.

Yes, the revolution hasn't worked out as well as many hoped — in fact things are pretty bad— but that disappointment lends an atmosphere of community and teamwork like I've seen few places before.

Despite political concerns, the people here miss their tourists desperately. This is Egypt, after all, where pyramids, ancient mosques, and unimaginable lifestyles make for a destination unlike anywhere in the world.

It's beautiful too, as you'll see in a few examples of what I saw here.

Note: Foreigners should be careful when traveling to Egypt and read the State Department travel advisory.

crazy cheesy crust pizza hutFor years Americans have watched Pizza Huts around the world introduce bizarre pies with cheeseburgers, chicken and other unexpected surprises in the crust. Finally the chain is bringing one home.

Click here to see Pizza Hut's strangest creations>

Pizza Hut just introduced the US to the "Crazy Cheesy Crust Pizza," which boast 16 pockets of five different types of cheese.

This seems mild compared to what has been introduced overseas. Americans enjoyed Pizza Hut's stuffed crust pizza in 1995, so much so that sales went up $300 million that year, but other countries got all the fun with bizarre Pizza Hut creations after that.

While this strange pizza will be sold for the next six weeks to three months, could this could mark the beginning of a trend to go strangely overboard as Pizza Hut has internationally?

Cheeseburger Crown Crust Pizza — Middle East

Pizza Hut's most famous masterpiece of 2012 was its cheeseburger crust pizza.

The heart attack on a pie debuted in April. It comes with chicken tenders instead of cheeseburgers, too.

The hot dog stuffed crust pizza debuted in April of this year and came to Canada in October.

In August, Pizza Hut Malaysia introduced, for the first time ever, squirting pizza crusts that ooze with bursts of cheese and tangy sauces.

Miriam Abrego, 55, unemployed, california

We're expecting the March jobs report Friday, and expectations are that nonfarm payroll employment will increase by 193,000.

The unemployment rate is expected to hold steady at 7.7 percent.

While the labor market has been trudging along slowly, mass layoffs in the past year have weighed on employment.

We drew on Bloomberg data to highlight the 18 biggest layoff announcements since April of last year.

18. First Solar: 2,000

Number of Employees:
7,000

First Solar announced that it would lay off almost a quarter of its workforce early last year and shut down its factory in Germany. This comes as the European market for green energy has deteriorated.

17: JC Penney: 2,200

Number of Employees:
116,000

JC Penney employees were told earlier this year that they have to get ready to "work harder with less" in 2013. "Service Leaders, administrative assistants, and office/cash room associates" were being cut, though some of these were being reabsorbed and offered sales positions.

CEO Ron Johnson has been trying to transform the retailer. 19,000 employees have been laid off since he took over.

16. Colgate-Palmolive Co: 2,316

Number of Employees:

Fallon, Letterman, Kimmel And O'Brien Joke About Leno's 'Tonight Show' Departure

$

Jimmy Fallon Jay Leno

On Wednesday, NBC finally confirmed that Jimmy Fallon will be replacing Jay Leno come February 2014.

The news wasn't shocking considering all of the recent speculation (and viral videos) in the media, but what was surprising was how well Leno handled the news.

“There really aren’t any complications like there were the last time,"Leno told the New York Times following NBC's announcement. "This time it feels right."

Leno wasn't quite as kind during Wednesday night's monologue, while his late-night colleagues used their monologues to make fun of Leno and NBC's mishandled "Tonight Show" takeover.

Jay Leno used his monologue to congratulate Jimmy Fallon and slam David Letterman.

After news broke Wednesday that Jay Leno will be handing over the "Tonight" show to Jimmy Fallon, Leno started the night's monologue by taking a jab at another rival: "Folks, I got to be honest with you, I had a really awkward day today.  I had to call David Letterman and tell him he didn’t get the 'Tonight Show' again. Awful! Terrible!"

He had kinder words for his successor.

"I want to congratulate our good friend Jimmy Fallon!  He is a hell of a guy, he’s going to do a great job. I just have one request for Jimmy: we’ve all fought, kicked, and scratched, to get this network up to 5th place, now we have to keep it there! Jimmy, don’t let it slip into 6th!  We are counting on you!"

He jokingly continued, "Things move so quickly; Jimmy hasn’t even taken over yet and the rumors have already starting…  like NBC says in five years they plan to replace Jimmy with Justin Bieber."

But all's well that ends well, as Leno joked, "Today I accepted a new position; I am going to be the head basketball coach at Rutgers University!  Thank you very much!"

David Letterman both made fun of and congratulated Jay Leno.

Letterman started his monologue Wednesday night by joking, "How many folks saw the white smoke coming out of the chimney at NBC?"

“He’s being replaced by a younger late night talk show host — what could possibly go wrong?” he deadpanned. ”Honestly. They had pretty good luck with this in the past.”

Letterman then goes on to try and explain the history of the "Tonight" show host switches and ultimately says, "I don't get this ... what's the matter with NBC?"

"Here's what it's going to be, Paul," he added. "It's going to be you and me and two guys named Jimmy."

Watch the full monologue below in which Letterman continues to slam (and congratulate) Leno, along with "The Top 10 Things We'll Miss About Jay Leno":

Jimmy Fallon graciously thanked his show's crew and Jay Leno.

Jimmy Fallon opened his show Wednesday night by joking "Hello! Welcome! This is Late Night with Jimmy Fallon … for now."

"You guys probably heard the news — I’m going to be taking over the 'Tonight Show' next February," he continued. "But don’t worry. Until February, our focus is right here on whatever this show is called."

Fallon then more seriously added:

"I want to thank everyone here at 'Late Night,' the staff, the crew, and of course The Roots. I have to say thanks to Jay Leno for being so gracious. It means so much to me to have his support. I just want to thank the fans for staying up to 12:35am and watching us…”

How Dark Matter Went From Crazy Idea To Bombshell Discovery

$

Portion of Large Magellanic Cloud Hubble Telescope

On Wednesday, an international team of scientists announced they had found the most convincing evidence yet that dark matter exists.

Dark matter makes up at least quarter of our universe. It's the invisible stuff that holds our stars, galaxies, and clusters of galaxies together.

The problem is, so far, scientists can't definitivley prove that dark matter exists.

The latest results are not conclusive, but they provide better evidence than any previous experiments, MIT astrophysicist Samuel Ting said in a news conference.

So while we still may not have directly found dark matter, we are closer than ever before.

It all started in 1933 when Fritz Zwicky noticed a discrepancy between the mass of visible matter and the calculated mass of a galaxy cluster.

Zwicky, from the California Institute of Technology, picked up on this inconsistency while observing a cluster of galaxies called the Cosizema cluster.

He calculated that the cluster had 400 times more mass than it should have had, based on what he saw with a telescope.

But that's not all. Beyond the issue that the cluster's mass did not match what could be observed from light, Zwicky also noticed that motion of the galaxies in the clusters was much too fast to be held together from the gravitational attraction created by visible matter alone.

The stars and galaxies would fly apart if there weren't some extra mass creating a gravitational effect that kept them together.

There must be something else there that is invisible to our detectors, he theorized. He called this missing mass "invisible matter" or "dark matter."

It took many many decades for the rest of the world to warm up to Zwicky's invisible dark matter theory, however.

That's because dark matter is just that — dark. The mysterious substance does not emit or absorb light, or other forms of electromagnetic waves.

So finding concrete evidence of the elusive substance is incredibly difficult.

Beyonce released a new commercial today for Pepsi in which she confronts some of her past looks from old music videos.

We did the world a huge favor by going through the video, frame by frame, and identifying which of Beyonce's old looks were resurrected for the new spot.

You're welcome.

Here they are, in order as they appear in the ad.

The video opens with Beyonce rehearsing dance moves for a new song, "Mirrors," but something weird happens when she takes a break for a sip of Pepsi.

An older version of herself appears in one of the mirrors. But which of her hits did she wear this outfit for?

We kinda gave it away on the first page: This was "Bootylicious," from back in the day when she was part of Destiny's Child.
