The 13 Strangest Moments From The MTV Movie Awards

rebel wilson mtv movie awards

There were a lot of strange moments during last night's MTV Movie Awards.

Granted, the awards' show is known for its hijinks.

This year, Will Ferrell showcased a fake family, Aubrey Plaza attempted to pull a Kanye on stage, and Jamie Foxx used the show to pimp off his 19-year-old daughter.

However, no one created more awkward tension on screen than host Rebel Wilson, Seth Rogen, and Danny McBride.

Rebel Wilson "flew" to the awards in a pink Iron Man suit dubbed "Iron Mangina" ...

Then she stripped down to this leather getup on screen in her opening number.

Wilson later took around a stuffed koala named "Chlamydia" who had "X-ray vision" to spy on some of the celebs.

The 30 Most Creative People In Mobile Advertising

$

joakim borgstrom niklas lilja goodby creative mobile advertising

Being creative in mobile advertising is much more difficult than in traditional media.

The real estate — the "creative palette," if you will — is smaller. The users' attention span is shorter. The medium itself is new.

And a lot of it can't be seen easily, the way TV commercials or magazine ads can be seen online.

After extensive research — and reading nominations from movers and shakers in the field— we have ranked the 30 most creative people in the mobile advertising. We defined creativity broadly, from people using the new technology in innovative ways, to those who are creating new tech for the medium, to those with more traditional ideas or design-driven roles.

While it's unfair to compare people from different fields of the mobile ad sphere, we tried to rank the nominees based on experience, contributions to the field, and out-of-the-box thinking.

We also noticed that both our research, and the nominations process, produced a shockingly undiverse list in terms of race and gender. (If we missed anyone who deserves to be on here, please let us know.)

28 - 30. Victor Wong, Roger Lee, and Victor Cheng, the CEO, COO, and CTO of PaperG

Wong, Lee, and Cheng have perfected a dashboard that creates customized mobile display ad campaigns in under a minute.

According to PaperG, its PlaceLocal system creates an attractive and robust mobile display ads using only the name and location of a business. The system then pulls creative assets from the web and suggests a color scheme.

Sure, the ads aren't the most visually stunning things you'll see on your phone (we'll get to those later in the slideshow), but it's really, really fast.

It only took one minute to make this ad campaign mockup for Gobo, a vegetarian restaurant in NYC.

PlaceLocal

27. Jason Newport, SVP head of mobile strategy, Aegis Media (including Carat)

Newport grew a mobile team at Aegis to a powerhouse that serves clients including Disney, Pfizer, GM, and the Home Depot.

And he likes to experiment beyond boring mobile banner ads. Newport developed a Mobile Circular ad for home depot that allows consumers to "swipe through" a range of products and deals — so there were 11 offers in one ad unit. (It's kind of like a traditional insert retailers place in newspapers.)

It gave Home Depot its highest mobile site traffic ever.

Newport also founded Omnicom's Mobile Behavior and handled social and youth marketing for AT&T at Fleishman-Hillard.

"He has always brought the sensibility of a technologist, the spirit of a creative director and the voraciousness of a successful entrepreneur to everything we have done together since we first began working together in wireless, when penetration in the US was less than half of what it is today," said Paul Okimoto, VP of Radio Shack.

A golden bust of the late Chairman Mao Zedong is displayed for sale at a department store in Beijing

Gold entered bear market territory last week. It is down over 7.0% today, and is trading below $1,400 per ounce today.

Dennis Gartman, publisher of the Gartman Letter wrote that in nearly four decades of trading gold, he had "never... ever... ever... seen anything like what we've witnessed in the past two trading sessions."

This is bad news for central banks that have been diversifying their foreign reserves to include gold.

Global official gold holdings totaled 31,694.8 tonnes as of April 2013, according to the latest report from the World Gold Council.

We pulled the numbers on the 10 biggest official reserves.

Click here to see the 10 countries being slammed by the collapse in gold >

Note: CBGA refers to the Central Bank Gold Agreements. The first Agreement (CBGA 1) ran from September 27, 1999 to September 26, 2004.  The second Agreement (CBGA 2) ran from September 27, 2004 to September 26, 2009. The third Agreement (CBGA 3) will run for five years from September 2009.

9. Netherlands

Official gold holdings:
612.5 tonnes

Percent of foreign reserves in gold:
58.7%

Back in 1999, the Netherlands announced under the Central Bank Gold Agreement (CBGA1) that it would sell 300 tonnes of gold during the next five years, but only managed to sell 235 tonnes.

Under CBGA2 (2004/2005 –'08/'09) it said it would sell a total of 165 tonnes (which included the 65 tonnes left over from CBGA1), and it announced no sales under CBGA3 (from 2008/2009 – '13/'14).

8. Japan

Official gold holdings:
765.2 tonnes

Percent of foreign reserves in gold:
3.1%

Japan's gold reserves were at just 6 tonnes in 1950, and its central bank registered its first serious jump in gold holdings in 1959, with purchases increasing by 169 tonnes from the previous year.

In 2011, the Bank of Japan sold gold to pump ¥20 trillion into the economy to calm investors after the tsunami and nuclear disaster.

The 20 Craft Breweries Taking Over America

$

flight of alesThe number of craft beer makers in America is growing at record speed.

More than 400 new craft breweries opened their doors in 2012, according to the Brewer's Association.

Craft brewers still make up only 6.5% of the total beer market. But enthusiasts are confident that number will continue to grow.

This week, the Brewers Association released its list of the top craft breweries in 2012, based on sales volume. We put together some information on the top 20, which beer lovers should keep on their radar.

20. Firestone Walker Brewing Co.

Location: Paso Robles, Calif.

About: The brewery was founded in 1996 by a pair of brothers-in-law. It's now a four-time World Beer Cup champion.

Beer buzz: Firestone Walker's Parabola Imperial Stout is coming out this month. The beer is a doozy at 13 percent alcohol by volume and is noted for its "bold bourbon, espresso and tobacco aromas."

19. Great Lakes Brewing Company

Location: Cleveland, Ohio

About: The brewery was founded in 1998 by Daniel and Patrick Conway. It jumped from producing 1,000 barrels of beer its first year to 125,000 barrels annually today.

Beer buzz: The company's Burning River Pale Ale has won a gold medal at the World Beer Championships eight times. The name hails from the infamous 1969 burning of the Cuyahoga River.

18. Long Trail Brewing Co.

Location: Bridgewater Corners, Vt.

About: The brewery got its start in 1989 in the basement of a woolen mill. It's focused on environmentalism and gives its used grain and hops as a feed supplement to local dairy cows.

Beer buzz: The company has an interesting story behind its 5.5 percent Pumpkin Pale Ale: "During colonial times malted barley would be in short supply so the colonial brewers would use a wide assortment of whatever organic ingredient was handy. Pumpkin was in abundance so it was one of the most common of the random ingredients."

I Spent 5 Hours In The World's Best Airport And Didn't Mind The Wait

Pool at Singapore Changi Airport

Singapore's Changi Airport is a major hub for international transport, with more than 135,000 passengers passing through every day.

But it's no boring airport terminal. Changi was just named the Best Airport in The World by Skytrax, a company that tracks and rates airline and airport performance.

Realizing that travel can be stressful, the team behind Changi designed the airport to be an open, airy space with lots of greenery (Singapore is the garden city, after all), gardens, outdoor access, and comfortable seating areas.

There are also incredible amenities, like a butterfly garden, rooftop pool, movie theaters, hotels, spas, and showers, and even a four-story slide.

I recently spent several hours in the airport during a trip to Singapore and had a chance to explore. The bottom line: This is a place where you'll actually enjoy having a long layover.

Disclosure: Our trip to Singapore, including travel and lodging expenses, was sponsored by the Singapore Tourism Board.

The airport is an architectural marvel. The newest terminal, Terminal 3, was designed by CPG Consultants, in collaboration with Woodhead, Tierra Design and SOM, Bartenbach LichtLabor and Hugh Dutton & Associates.

Most passengers enter the airport at Terminal 3, the newest and largest terminal at Changi, which is where Singapore Airlines is based. At 380,000 sq. m., the terminal is spacious, with high ceilings and an open, airy feel.

There's also a lush vertical garden here called the "Green Wall." It has over 20 varieties of plants, vines, and flowers growing on it.

The 10 Highest Paid Hedge Fund Managers

$

david tepper

Institutional Investor's Alpha has released its 12th annual rich list, which ranks the top-earning hedge fund managers for the year.

According to Institutional Investor's Alpha's analysis, the 25 highest earning hedge fund managers brought in a combined $14.14 billion in 2012. That's the lowest total since 2008.

Fund managers are paid through a compensation structure commonly known as the "2 and 20", which stands for a 2% management fee and a 20% performance fee charge. Those numbers can, however, vary from fund to fund. More specifically, two and twenty means hedge fund manager would charge 2% of total assets under management and 20% of any profits.

The fund managers also likely have their own capital invested in their funds so that would have to be taken into consideration when calculating their take home pay.

David Tepper, the founder of $12 billion-distressed-debt hedge fund Appaloosa Management, made it to the top of the list. There were four fund managers whose take-home pay was over a billion.

Daniel Loeb

Earnings: $380 million

Firm: Third Point LLC

Assets Under Management (AUM):$9.3 billion

2012 Highlights: In 2012, Loeb took on Yahoo!.  In late 2012, he made $500 million profit off of a Greek Government Bond bet, according to the Financial Times. He also dumped his entire Apple stake in the fourth quarter of 2012, according to a securities filing.

David Shaw

Earnings: $530 million

Firm: D.E. Shaw (He no longer manages the firm's day-to-day operations)

Here's How The World Actually Uses Gold

donald trump holds gold

Gold skeptics often warn that the yellow metal has no intrinsic value.

But that's a bit of an exaggeration.

In addition to its use in jewelery, gold has many practical real world uses too.

The folks at U.S. Global Investors put together this slideshow to illustrate some of the uses of gold.

Thanks to U.S. Global Investors for allowing us to feature this presentation.

Gold is coveted by many

Gold’s qualities make it one of the most coveted metals in the world. Not only can it be beautifully shaped and sculpted, the yellow metal conducts electricity and does not tarnish. These qualities make it the metal of choice for a wide variety of industries. Let’s take a look at some industrial, medical and technological uses of gold, some of which are truly amazing.

It's been used by dentists for 3,000 years

Gold has been used in dentistry for nearly 3,000 years. The first book published on dentistry, entitled Artzney Buchlein, appeared in 1530. The book suggests dentists fill cavities and rotten teeth with gold leaf.

Gold is not toxic

Thousands of years later gold is still being used for fillings, crowns, bridges and orthodontic appliances. Gold is a bio-compatible metal, meaning it can be placed in contact with a person’s body and not cause harm to one’s health.

Larry Birnbaum — a veteran of Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers and more — is selling his beautiful oceanfront home on the Long Island Sound, says the Wall Street Journal.

The five-bedroom home is located on what used to be part of William Randolph Hearst's estate in Sands Point, New York. It's the one that is believed to have inspired Jay Gatsby's estate in 'The Great Gatsby,' and Larry and his wife Amy think their house is built on the estate's old tennis court.

History aside, the house is pretty awesome all on its own. It has its own 200 foot private beach, and if that's not enough there also the vaulted cathedral ceilings, wood burning fireplace, and gorgeous cedar deck where you can enjoy the ocean view should be decent draws.

The house is going for $5.9 million and Maggie Keats of Douglas Elliman has the listing.

Double up on the protection and use a screen protector.

We swear by Zagg's Invisible Shield. This small plastic film keeps your screen incredibly scratch-proof and far more resilient than a naked screen.

A Google-watching reader writes us:

After languishing on the market, the price of Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt's Lone Ranger expedition yacht was cut from $20,000,000 to a mere $14,000,000 (sales brochure).

Still no takers for the vessel, so the former pride of the Schmidt Ocean Institute — which can travel an amazing 31,000 miles at 12 knots thanks to a fuel capacity of 1.3 million litres — will be auctioned "as is" on April 20th at the Antibes Yacht Show, with bid estimates ranging from EUR 3 million to EUR 10 million.

'Lone Ranger and her truly astonishing story will appeal to a new generation of luxury yacht owner,' the sales brochure notes.

'The yacht epitomises low key luxury, but most importantly offers the ideal platform for anyone wanting to explore the farthest flung corners of the world with their family.'

Giant African Snail

New York City has rats. Florida has snails.

An invasive species called the giant African land snail has been steadily taking over South Florida's Miami-Dade County ever since one was first spotted in September 2011.

The snail can grow to be the size of the rat, and is particularly annoying because it eats all kinds of plants, as well as building materials like plaster and stucco, and can carry a parasite that leads to meningitis in humans.

The giant African snail is one of the largest snails in the world.

Snails are typically only a few inches long, but this one can grow up to 8 inches long and 4 inches wide, or to about the size of a rat.

The Florida Department of Agriculture considers the giant snail to be one of the most damaging snails in the world for several reasons.
