10 unique homes that were built just to annoy people

red and white house

  • Although Homes are typically designed to be a safe haven, sometimes they're made with less positive intentions.
  • "Spite houses" are homes that were built to irritate neighbors or serve as an act of revenge.
  • They're a common phenomenon throughout the world, often becoming tourist destinations once the original owners no longer own them.
  • A house painted to look like candy canes and a tiny home built just to block a brother's view are only a couple of the spite houses that exist.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

Despite the importance of loving thy neighbor, fights between those who live near each other are common, and can even result in what is known as a spite house.

A spite house is one that is built with the sole intention of irritating a neighbor or as an act of revenge against another landowner.

They're a common phenomenon, and you can find them all over the world.

For instance, a London resident painted this house red and white after her neighbors prevented her from demolishing it.

In 2015, Zipporah Lisle-Mainwaring wanted to demolish her London home, but when her neighbors objected to the plan, she decided to paint it with candy cane stripes instead, according to The Guardian.

Although her neighbors attempted to force her to repaint, the High Court in London ruled that she could ignore a planning order from the local council in 2017.

She was also given permission to move forward with the demolition in 2017, according to the Evening Standard.

It's believed that the Skinny House in Boston was the result of a feud between brothers.

According to Boston Magazine, The Skinny House is believed to have been built after a man returned from serving in the Civil War only to find that his brother had built a large house on their shared land.

The 1,166-square-foot building blocks the adjoining home's view of the Boston harbor, as well as its access to sunlight.

The Equality House sits directly across from Westboro Baptist Church in an act of protest.

The Equality House, located in Topeka, Kansas, is the resource center for Planting Peace, a global non-profit organization.

Planting Peace bought the house in 2013, according to the Huffington Post, with the intention of making a statement against Westboro Baptist Church, whose members are known for picketing the funerals of fallen soldiers.

The Equality House still stands today, and Planting Peace added a second home called the Mott House in 2016, which is painted the colors of the transgender flag.

The Spite House in Alexandria, Virginia, was built in a former alley.

At just seven feet wide, the Spite House has been dubbed the narrowest house in America. The 325-square-foot house was built in 1830 by John Hollensbury, who lived in one of the adjacent homes, as reported by The New York Times

Hollensbury built the tiny home to prevent horse-drawn carriages and passersby from moving through the alley. From inside, you can see marks on the brick walls from wagon-wheel hubs.

The Montlake Spite House came to be after the land parcel's owner was insulted by a neighbor's offer to buy it.

The Montlake Spite House in Seattle, Washington, was built in 1925. As legend has it, the owner of the 3,090-square-foot parcel of land was offered a small amount of money from his neighbor who hoped to turn the plot into a garden.

According to Atlas Obscura, the landowner was offended by the small offer and decided to build a small house instead.

In 2016, the spite house, which is only 15 feet wide, hit the market for more than $519,000.

Dr. John Tyler built this Maryland home to defy his town's city hall.

Located in Frederick, Maryland, the Tyler-Spite House was built by Dr. John Tyler in 1814. According to local lore, the spite home was built after Tyler discovered that the city planned to build a road through his property.

Tyler found a law that said the road couldn't be built onto the property if a building already existed, or was in the process of being built on it, so he tracked down a contractor who was willing to start construction the night before the road was set to be paved.

Because of Tyler's dead-of-night construction, the road couldn't be paved, and the home he built is still called the Frederick-Tyler Spite House today.

Historians claim the Spite Tower in Adamsville, Rhode Island, was built in response to a neighborly spat.

Local Rhode Island historians claim the Spite Tower was built in 1905 after two neighbors had a fight and one of the men wanted to block the other's view of the town.

But, according to Herald News, the house may have just been built in its location because it sits over a well. The height would have been necessary for accessing the water.

Regardless of its origins, the name stuck, and the Spite Tower is still a popular tourist destination today.

This house in Freeport, New York, was built to stop the city from being designed as a grid system.

Known as both the Freeport Spite House and the Miracle House, developer John Randall built this Victorian-era home at the turn of the 19th century.

Randall reportedly built the two-story house to prevent the city from being laid out in a grid. The structure, which still stands today, was placed on a triangular plot of land.

The Plum Island Pink House has its origins in a marriage that ended poorly.

The Plum House, located in Newbury, Massachusetts, was built in the 1920s as a replica of a couple's former family home, according to Atlas Obscura.

The legend states that a woman's soon-to-be ex-husband had to build a replica of the house as part of their divorce agreement, but the court didn't specify where the house had to sit.

To spite his former spouse, the man built the house on top of a salt marsh and used saltwater for the plumbing, making it uninhabitable.

The Edith Macefield House has been compared to the floating house from Disney's "Up" after the owner refused to vacate her property to make way for a developer.

In 2006, Edith Macefield was reportedly offered $1 million to sell her Seattle, Washington, home to a developer that wanted to turn the lot into an office building.

The property was built around her house, inspiring comparisons to Carl Frederickson's home in "Up." Passersby even hang balloons on the fence outside of the house as a nod to the Disney film.

The house remained on the property even after Macefield's death in 2009, as she bequeathed it to the construction superintendent for the project, as reported by Seattle PI

The critically acclaimed final season of Netflix's "BoJack Horseman" surged audience demand this week.

Every week, Parrot Analytics provides Business Insider with a list of the nine most in-demand TV shows on streaming services. The data is based on "demand expressions," Parrot Analytics' globally standardized TV demand measurement unit. Audience demand reflects the desire, engagement, and viewership weighted by importance, so a stream or download is a higher expression of demand than a "like" or comment on social media, for instance.

Below are this week's nine most popular original shows on Netflix and other streaming services:

Rotten Tomatoes critic score (Season 2): 81%

  • From November 10 to November 11, save 15% on your orders when you apply the code SURPRISE15 at checkout. Sheets, duvet covers, bathrobes, towels, and more are discounted.
  • In our buying guides, we've named Brooklinen the maker of the best luxury sheets, the best sateen sheets, and the best duvet cover on the internet.

Brooklinen is one of our favorite companies to cover. From its bed sheets, to its Brooklittles bedding line for babies and toddlers, to its super-plush bathrobes, to its shower curtain sets, there's a lot to love about the direct-to-consumer darling.

But Brooklinen isn't known for running sales. The company typically only has two sales a year: one during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and the other to celebrate its anniversary in May.

This November, Brooklinen is running a surprise sale that coincides with Veterans Day and Singles' Day, so everyone has a chance to get ahead of the holidays and get some gifting done early. From Sunday, November 10 through Monday, November 11, you can save 15% on your orders when you apply the code SURPRISE15 at checkout.

Save 15% on your entire order during Brooklinen's surprise sale.

If you're looking for a new set of sheets, or you've been waiting for a discount as an excuse to try out luxury bedding, this is one of the best times of the year to invest. Even though Black Friday deals and Cyber Monday deals are only a few weeks away, we don't predict the savings to be steeper than 20% as that was the highest discount Brooklinen offered during last year's sale.

You can check out Brooklinen's full product lineup here, but we're fans of the Luxe Hardcore Sheet Bundle for every day. It comes with a duvet cover, a fitted sheet, a flat sheet, and four pillowcases for $332 in the queen size. Insider Picks' director of content strategy Ellen Hoffman says the sheet bundle is one of the best purchases she's ever made.

In our buying guides, we've also name Brooklinen the maker of the best luxury sheets and the best sateen sheets. The company's Down Comforter (full/queen, $349) is the best we tried from a startup, and the Classic Duvet Cover (full/queen, $119) is another best in its category. It also makes spa-worthy towels (Bath Sheets, two for $89) and super-plush bathrobes ($98), the latter of which Insider Picks reporter Remi Rosmarin says are the little luxury she never thought she needed.

When it comes to Brooklinen, our experience is that it's pretty difficult to go wrong. Below, we put together a list of Brooklinen's bestsellers and our personal favorites to help guide your weekend shopping.

'Sesame Street' turns 50 this year. Here's 15 photos that show how the program has evolved over the years.

"Sesame Street," the pioneering children's TV show loved across the world, premiered 50 years ago on November 10.

The show has taught generations of children how to count and say their ABCs, offered helpful lessons in diversity and mental health, and continues to be a role model for kids' TV shows everywhere.

"Sesame Street," as an idea, started with a question. In the midst of the civil rights movement in the 1960s, founders Joan Ganz Cooney and Lloyd Morris asked themselves: How can we help disadvantaged youth prepare for school through a television program?

The group then hired puppeteer and Muppet creator Jim Henson, who helped the team create a cast of characters to live on "Sesame Street."

The show first premiered in 1969 on the National Educational Television network, an entity that later became the Public Broadcasting Service. The episode featured catchy songs, celebrity guests, and goofy and thoughtful Muppet characters, including Big Bird, Bert and Ernie, and Oscar the Grouch.

By the end of its first season, "Sesame Street" had reached millions of preschoolers. Fifty years later, it has broadcast in more than 100 countries, and won dozens of Grammy and Emmy awards.

More Muppets were added as time went on, like Count von Count in the 1970s, and more recently, Julia, the first Muppet with autism, and Lily, the first Muppet to experience homelessness

On the show's 50th anniversary, Insider's taking a look back at how the show has evolved over the years.

He continued performing the roles for 49 years.

For years adults on "Sesame Street" thought Mr. Snuffleupagus was Big Bird's imaginary friend. In 1985, the show made him a real character.

Mr. Snuffleupagus was made into a real character in 1985, in the wake of a series of high-profile child abuse cases in the United States.

Showrunners said Mr. Snuffleupagus, who was long believed to be Big Bird's imaginary friend, was made real to show children that adults would believe them if the told them something.

According to a history of the show provided by Sesame Workshop, "By acknowledging that Big Bird was right about Snuffy all along, 'Sesame Street' validated children's feelings, encouraging them to share important things with their parents and caregivers."

Barbara Bush was the first First Lady to appear on "Sesame Street." She appeared on the show in an episode that aired in 1990, and Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, and Michelle Obama followed in her footsteps.

Celebrities continue to make appearances on "Sesame Street" to this day. Janelle Monáe stopped by in 2014 to teach the cast about persevering.

"Sesame Street" introduced its first Afghan Muppet in 2016. She appeared on the Afghanistan production of the program.

"Sesame Street" introduced Julia, the first character with autism, in 2017. The show went on to create an initiative to help educate viewers on autism.

"Sesame Street" now airs in 150 countries and is showing no signs of stopping. The show is now broadcast on both HBO and PBS, and in 2019, New York officially created a "Sesame Street" in the city.

Majesty 140 profile

The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show has established itself as the biggest in-water boat show in the world.

With credentials like that, it's no surprise that the largest and most lavish yachts from shipyards across the world flocked to South Florida in early November for a chance to entice over 100,000 boat showgoers for the event's 60th year.

The yacht that impressed the most of all was Majesty 140.

The over 140-foot superyacht built in Dubai by Gulf Craft, in addition to being named best in show by NBC Sports, sold for around $20 million on closing day, according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

4 fool-proof ways to prevent the 'Sunday scaries,' according to an executive coach

melody wilding

  • Melody Wilding is an executive coach who helps people navigate their careers confidently and find lasting work-life balance.
  • She says that Sunday scaries are normal, but avoidable. Even doing something small on Friday that you would usually do on Monday can help soothe concerns. And starting off Mondays with something you enjoy can combat lingering dread.
  • Treat Sundays as sacred, and schedule something you find restorative. If scaries still persist, it may be worth talking to someone.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

In a perfect world, a typical Sunday would be relaxing and refreshing — a true leisure day. But for many of us, the end of the weekend brings a sense of dread, often referred to as the "Sunday scaries."

Nagging thoughts about work may creep up as soon as you wake up or sneak in even after a lovely day of brunch with friends. Heading into Monday with high anxiety can leave you feeling exhausted and depleted right out of the gate, leaving you with little motivation to conquer the week ahead.

If you've ever had a case of the Sunday scaries, it's important to know you're not alone. Over 76% of people battle with "really bad" Sunday night blues. Even though workweek anticipation seems inevitable (and almost universal, at least in the US), you don't have to keep settling for that pit-in-your stomach feeling forever.

Try these four adjustments to say goodbye to the Sunday scaries and transform your attitude for the week ahead.

SEE ALSO: 3 ways to restore your confidence after getting criticism at work, according to a career coach

1. Don't let life pile up

It's tempting to put off personal matters — like meal prep, errands, and mail — on workdays. Deferring and batching similar tasks is a smart way to be productive, but overestimating what you can accomplish on a single Sunday leaves you feeling frustrated, which is not conducive to peacefulness.

Removing the pressure to get your life together within a hectic, 24-hour window helps you feel accomplished, unrushed, and level-headed so you can start your week off on the right foot.

Start early and spread things out: Before leaving your desk on Friday afternoon, check off a few tasks you'd normally put off until Monday, like zeroing your inbox or paying bills. Make tying up loose ends on Sunday more manageable by tackling household chores at a steady pace throughout the week.

2. Make Sundays special or sacred

Sunday is half of the weekend, so make the most of it. You don't have to plan an adventure that will leave you exhausted on Monday, but don't write it off as a chore-filled day of monotony or simply slate it for hangover recovery.

Fill your day with activities you find genuinely restorative, whether that's settling down with a new book, going for a hike, or enjoying dinner with friends. Your brain will begin to re-associate Sundays with excitement and fun, not dread.

3. Whenever possible, ease into the week ahead

Sometimes you can't avoid having a meeting or deadline first thing on Mondays. But if you do have some control over your schedule, try easing into the workweek. Knowing you'll be starting Monday off with a powerful morning routine or with work you enjoy can help quiet anxiety the night before.

4. If the Sunday scaries persist, listen to your gut

Persistent, intense dread for several weeks or more should be taken seriously because it may signal depression, burnout, or another underlying condition. If you experience work-related insomnia or feel physically sick at the thought of walking into the office on Monday, speak with a doctor and find support

Listen to your gut. Don't ignore signs that suggest a toxic workplace is taking a toll on your health. Moving on from a job that's not the right fit is a tough decision to make, but ultimately it will lead to positive change.

For most people, though, taking Sunday back won't require any enormous lifestyle or mindset changes — just a few habit tweaks here and there. Reclaiming your weekend, and more enjoyment of your life as a result, is well worth the effort.

5 design trends celebrities love that interior designers hate

  • Celebrity home decor can be a point of inspiration for many, which is why seeing inside their homes is such a thrill for fans.
  • But celebrities also make design choices that professionals aren't always a fan of.
  • Insider spoke to interior designers about the celebrity design trends they hate most.
  • An industrial aesthetic in the home sphere and accent walls are among their least favorite celebrity trends.
  • Celebrities also gravitate toward a monochromatic and minimalist interior, but designers say this can make a space feel less homey.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

Celebrity home decor has long fascinated people, with shows like "MTV Cribs" and "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" captivating audiences for years.

In fact, part of the appeal of celebrity-focused reality shows like "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" is seeing what a star's home is like on a day-to-day basis.

For instance, fans were thrilled when they got to see what Kim Kardashian West's home looks like in a video for Vogue's "73 Questions" series.

Despite their popularity, interior designers don't always love the way celebrities decorate their homes.

Some celebrities focus on creating a space that looks cool rather than one that feels comfortable in designers' opinions.

For example, Kardashian West's self-described "minimal monastery" home, which is both minimalist and monochromatic, wouldn't be every designer's cup of tea.

Monochromatic color schemes are popular among celebrities, but this can make a space feel less homey.

"The best way to make a room feel homey is to add layering, texture, handmade pieces, and warm woods," said Kathy Anderson, owner and founder of the luxury interior design firm, Anderson Design Studio.

"Pattern mixing and maximalism is taking the place of minimalism," Anderson told Insider.

Instead of the cool, sleek look of minimalist design, experts are now leaning toward the colorful and plentiful.

"It's timeless to use books and collected items that are meaningful to the client to accessorize and bring a sense of personality to the home," Anderson added.

Many celebrities gravitate toward industrial aesthetics in their homes, using things like Edison Bulbs, which can make a space look too harsh.

"This look is very cool and great for commercial spaces," Anderson said of industrial materials.

"However, in a celebrity home, we want softness, luxury, rich fabrics, textures, and statement furniture pieces," she went on to say.

Likewise, accent walls are a popular trend that designers can find alienating.

"I can't get into an accent wall,"interior designer and HGTV star Leanne Ford told Insider.

An accent wall would work in a professional space, but in a home, it can look disruptive rather than welcoming.

The designers also said cool gray shades can make a space look dark and dull.

Bright colors might be a better choice for a home space rather than muted gray, as they will feel more welcoming.

The gray color scheme has "already started to go out, and we're happy about it," Anderson said, speaking for her firm. "Bring on the color!"

And Jason Oliver Nixon and John Loecke, cofounders of Madcap Cottage, added that they don't like it when celebrities present themselves as design experts.

"We don't like when folks jump into the design business when they have no background whatsoever in design," the design team explained.

Although many celebrities work with designers, they usually aren't experts in the field, which is important to remember as you think about what to do with your own space.

11 pastry chefs reveal their favorite doughnuts

  • Insider asked 11 pastry chefs about their favorite doughnuts of all time.
  • Some pastry chefs chose ones you can find at chains, like Dunkin's blueberry-cake doughnut and Krispy Kreme's classic glazed variety.
  • Powdered-sugar and vanilla-glazed doughnuts were also beloved by some pastry chefs.
  • Some told Insider that their favorite doughnuts are specific to certain locations, like the coconut-cream doughnut from Doughnut Plant in New York City or the white-chocolate tres-leches doughnut from The Salty Donut in Miami, Florida.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

Even pastry chefs, who specialize in crafting desserts, pastries, and other baked goods, have preferences when it comes to doughnuts.

We asked 11 pastry chefs about their favorite doughnuts of all time and their answers ranged from chain-specific options to general varieties and everything in between.

This baking pro said she loves how powdered-sugar doughnuts make her feel.

For Sefika Kaya, pastry chef of Omni Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa in Rancho Mirage, California, her go-to dessert is a sugar-coated doughnut.

"I love sugar doughnuts. Not only do they look great, but they are so messy and they remind me of my childhood. No one can eat a sugar doughnut and complain about the mess," Kaya told Insider. "I think everyone is taken back to their childhood for at least those few minutes when eating one."

Some believe you simply can't beat the classic glazed doughnut from Krispy Kreme.

"Call me basic, but a classic Krispy-Kreme glazed doughnut will always be my crush," said pastry chef Ella Stone, CEO of SWIRL Bakery in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Read More: I tried 12 different doughnuts from Krispy Kreme and found that you can't beat the classics

The cinnamon old-fashioned doughnut from Do-Rite in Chicago, Illinois, is this pastry chef's favorite.

Danielle Marelli, pastry chef of Travelle at the Langham, told Insider that her favorite doughnut is an old-fashioned that's dusted with cinnamon sugar from Do-Rite, a fried-chicken and doughnut shop in Chicago, Illinois.

"It's perfectly crunchy on the outside and so soft inside," she said, adding that the doughnut's exterior is the best part.

This pastry chef agrees that vanilla-glazed doughnuts are a classic for a reason.

"My favorite doughnut is a classic vanilla-glazed. I love how soft they are and the vanilla glaze offers a perfect amount of sugar without being too sweet, especially if they have orange or lemon zest," Santiago Torres, executive pastry chef of LondonHouse in Chicago, Illinois, told Insider.

"They are the perfect breakfast," he added.

Some chefs stand by the simplicity of an old-fashioned doughnut.

"My all-time favorite doughnut is an old-fashioned cake doughnut with a maple glaze," said Syd Berkowitz, a pastry chef located in Denver, Colorado. This old-fashioned variety is usually a cake doughnut made with flour, sugar, eggs, sour cream, and leavening agent.

This Florida-based pastry chef opts for the white-chocolate tres-leches doughnut from The Salty Donut in Miami, Florida.

Jessica Scott, the corporate executive pastry chef of Barton G. Restaurants, said her favorite doughnut is from The Salty Donut, a shop located in Miami, Florida.

She said she particularly favors The Salty Donut's white-chocolate tres-leches flavor, explaining that it's "the perfect combination of an on-the-go morning pastry and a full-on plated dessert."

"The brioche-based doughnut is soaked in rum and milk, with the bottom dipped in white chocolate. [Then, it's] topped with a toasted meringue and tart fruit," she explained.

Apple fritters offer a perfect blend of textures, spices, and fruit, according to this chef.

"I love a good apple fritter. Just the smell, to me, is the first signal of fall. The apple fritter is the perfect balance between fruity and sweet. [And it's] deep-fried (like all good doughnuts should be), crisp at the edges, and fluffy in the center," explained cookbook author Tiffany La Forge, pastry chef of Parsnips and Pastries.

"In my opinion, a good apple fritter should be glazed, perfumed with cinnamon sugar, and paired with a strong coffee," she told Insider.

This pastry chef's favorite is the coconut-cream doughnut from Doughnut Plant in New York City.

If Clarice Lam, pastry chef of The Baking Bean, had to choose her favorite doughnut, it'd be the coconut-cream one from the NYC-based bakery, Doughnut Plant.

"It's so soft and pillowy and is glazed and coated with coconut flakes. It's also filled with a coconut creme made with fresh coconut juice," she told Insider.

The creme- or jelly-filled bomboloni is an Italian classic and a favorite for some pros.

"The Italian-style bomboloni is my favorite, go-to doughnut … they are very versatile, delicious, and can be filled with almost anything, said Kevin McCormick, executive pastry chef of Onward in Chicago, Illinois.

Bomboloni typically come stuffed with either jam or cream. "I prefer my bomboloni lightly fried and dusted with powdered sugar — the simpler, the better," he added.

This chef told Insider their go-to pick is Dunkin's Boston-cream doughnut.

Some pastry chefs have a soft spot for the offerings at Dunkin', a popular American coffee and doughnut chain. This includes Kristine Antonian-Vilarosa, pastry chef at Cira in Chicago, Illinois.

"My all-time favorite doughnut is [the] Boston-cream from Dunkin'. They never disappoint," she said.

The blueberry-cake doughnut at Dunkin' delivers balanced flavors, according to this NYC-based pastry chef.

"I prefer a yeast-risen doughnut … but I have a soft spot for that blueberry cake doughnut from Dunkin'," Abby Swain, executive pastry chef of Temple Court in New York City, told Insider.

  • I recently visited Abkhazia, a disputed region in Georgia, to photograph abandoned buildings and towns.
  • The Sukhumi Babushara Airport in Abkhazia was built in the 1960s, but hasn't been used since the early 1990s after it was heavily damaged in a war with Georgia.
  • Eerie photos of the abandoned airport show what it looks like today.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

On the coast of western Asia's Black Sea lies an airport that has been abandoned for 25 years.

The Sukhumi Babushara Airport in Abkhazia, a disputed region of Georgia, was built in the 1960s, when Abkhazia was still a part of the Soviet Union.

Thanks to the city of Sukhumi's proximity to the Black Sea, the airport was popular for domestic travelers looking for a beach getaway. At its peak, close to 5,000 people traveled through the airport each summer.

But the airport's fate changed in the early 1990s, when Abkhazia was ravaged by war with Georgia. The airport was heavily damaged, leading to its abandonment.

As a photographer with a focus on abandoned buildings, I took a particular interest in the Abkhazia airport. I recently traveled to the region to document what 25 years of neglect have done to the building.

Here's what the airport looks like today.

Abkhazia's airport has gone virtually untouched since the early 1990s. The airport is closed for international traffic because it's not recognized by the International Civil Aviation Organization.

There's a non-functioning plane still sitting in the abandoned runway. The Yak-40 aircraft carried former Georgian president Eduard Shevardnadze to Abkhazia in March 1993 to take charge of Georgian forces in the region.

The decaying entrance to the airport was a sign of what was to come.

Here's what I found inside the airport, which was heavily damaged and eventually abandoned during the conflict with Georgia.

Concrete staircases leading to an empty upper level were some of the only structures I saw standing.

Here's the view from the top floor.

The airport was riddled with landmines during the war. It wasn't until 2003 that all landmines and other explosive devices were declared to have been removed from the airport by the HALO Trust.

Source: The HALO Trust

The airport is inaccessible to the public, but luckily, a few military personnel were willing to show me around.

Russia is one of the few countries to recognize Abkhazia as a sovereign state, but even Russian planes can't fly to the airport because of sanctions by the International Air Transport Association.

This storage area was visibly damaged and was in the worst shape of the areas I saw.

You can see the old baggage carousels where arriving passengers once picked up their luggage.

The Abkhazian president said in 2006 that he hoped the airport would resume operations soon, but apart from a visit from the Russian foreign minister in 2008, that hasn't materialized.

And it isn't likely the airport will be used any time soon.

Celebrities and influencers are furious at Instagram's experiment with hiding likes, and some are threatening to stop posting on the app (FB)

  • Instagram plans to test a feature that hides "like" counts on posts for some US users starting this week.
  • Celebrities and influencers have expressed outrage with the experimental feature, arguing that it weakens their leverage over brand deals and promotions.
  • But a few celebrities, including Kim Kardashian, have praised the decision.
  • The feature has already been piloted in seven countries including Australia, Ireland, and Canada.

Instagram is testing a new feature in the US this week that could be its most controversial yet: hiding the number of "likes" on posts.

The new feature, announced by Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri on Friday, is being met with strong backlash, especially from many influencers and celebrities.

The feature has already been piloted in seven countries including Australia, Ireland, and Canada in recent months. When it was rolled out there, influencers complained that hiding likes would give them less leverage over brand deals and sponsored content.

Now, American celebrities are calling out the app for experimenting with removing likes, with some threatening to stop posting to Instagram. Others joked on Twitter about the proposed changes.

But some, including Kim Kardashian, have heralded Instagram's decision as a boon to users' mental health.

"We're testing this because we want Instagram to be a place where people feel comfortable expressing themselves. This includes helping people to focus on the photos and videos they share, not how many likes they get," a spokesperson for Facebook, which owns Instagram, told Business Insider.

Here's what influencers and celebrities are saying about the new feature that hides likes on Instagram.

Nicki Minaj threatened to stop posting on Instagram if the feature were to take effect.

Minaj went on to speculate that Instagram was hiding likes to manipulate what posts users saw in their feed, regardless of how much engagement posts were getting.

Minaj apparently referred to the well-documented phenomenon of YouTube view counts fluctuating after videos are posted, which can happen when YouTube determines views come from bots or other fraudulent sources.

The rapper Juicy J predicted backlash against the change, tweeting that he expected people to leave Instagram and go "back to real life."

Cardi B took to Instagram to protest the feature, arguing that removing likes wouldn't make Instagram any less toxic because "the comments affect more than the likes."

The rapper Rico Nasty said the decision to hide likes would "kill Instagram."

But some people, including Kim Kardashian West, view the decision to hide likes as a good thing.

"As far as mental health, I mean it's something that taking the likes away and taking that aspect away from it would be really beneficial for people," Kardashian West said during The New York Times' DealBook conference last week.

Tracee Ellis Ross also voiced support for removing likes, saying the like count had "adverse effects.""It creates a culture that isn't helpful for well-being and isn't fruitful for creative energy," she said.

Ross made the statement last week during a panel discussion with Mosseri facilitated by Wired.

And some influencers have argued that the number of likes on a post is irrelevant compared with other metrics like follower counts and impressions.

Karen Civil, a social-media strategist, made the case that influencers shouldn't pay too much attention to how many likes their posts got.

The world's first hybrid cruise ship is currently on its maiden voyage, an 18-day trip to Antarctica with 450 guests onboard. Here's a look inside.

MS Roald Amundsen

  • Hurtigruten, a Norwegian expedition cruise company, unveiled the world's first hybrid cruise ship earlier this year. It is currently on its maiden voyage to Antarctica with 450 passengers aboard.
  • The vessel, MS Roald Amundsen, runs on low sulfur diesel fuel that is supported by battery packs, cutting emissions by 20%.
  • But it's not all science and technology on board: The ship is also equipped with an infinity pool, luxury suites, three restaurants, and a glass-encased sauna.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Luxury and sustainability are merging in the world of yachts.

In September, the world's first hydrogen-powered superyacht was unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show. And right now, the world's first hybrid, battery-supported cruise ship is making its maiden voyage to Antarctica with 450 passengers aboard, according to Robb Report.

The MS Roald Amundsen's first expedition to Antarctica is fitting – it was named after the eponymous legendary Norwegian polar explorer. The ship was unveiled by Hurtigruten, a Norwegian expedition cruise company, this summer.

The 459-foot cruise ship is equipped with battery packs that support its low sulfur, diesel-powered, Rolls Royce-built engines.

That's not to say the cruise is devoid of the lavish trappings of a typical cruise ship: There's also an infinity pool, a glass-encased sauna, three restaurants, and luxurious cabins on board. Throughout the ship, there are almost 600 works of art produced by young Norwegian artists, handpicked by the queen of Norway.

Prices for a future cruise featuring the same route start at $14,720 per person. The more lavish cabins raise that baseline to $23,046 per person.

Keep reading for a look inside the cruise ship.

It runs on Rolls Royce-built engines powered by low sulfur diesel fuel and batteries, which, according to the ship's developer, lowers the ship's CO2 emissions by 20%.

In addition to its operating systems, the ship is also committed to sustainability in other ways. There are no single-use plastics aboard and the uniforms worn by the crew are made from recycled ocean plastic.

The cruise ship is currently on a full capacity, 18-day maiden voyage to Antarctica.

The maiden voyage started in Valparaíso, Chile before cruising south along the coast of South America toward the Drake Passage. From there, the ship spends three days in Antarctica before returning to Punta Arenas, Chile.

Passengers can disembark in Antarctica and partake in activities that include kayaking, hiking, whale-watching, and penguin-watching.

And it's not just science and sustainability on board: Like other cruise ships that support travels of that length, the ship is flush with luxury amenities. The ship has 264 cabins.

The MS Roald Amundsen is just one example of the luxury travel industry becoming more eco-friendly in 2019.

Business Insider previously reported that a model for the first hydrogen-powered yacht was unveiled in September by Sinot, a Dutch yacht-design company. The 367-foot vessel will be completely powered by liquid hydrogen and fuel-cell technology. Its only emission will be water.

Beyond boats, luxury African safaris are also embracing the eco-friendly. In August, Business Insider's Katie Warren reported on a Botswana safari company equipped with conservation camps for children, where lessons on the environment, health, and nutrition are taught.

Increased attention to sustainability and conservation in the luxury travel sector play into the larger trend of "transformational travel." Ultimately, the ultra-wealthy want to leave their vacation with a transformative, emotional experience to bring home, and in some cases, want to make a positive impact on the places they visit.

A pilot and Instagram influencer with nearly half a million followers reveals 7 secrets most people don't know about the job

Swedish pilot and Instagram influencer Maria Fagerström uses Instagram to share her work as a pilot, her travels, and her home with her boyfriend with her nearly 500,000 followers.

In her bio, she promises, "I'm here to give YOU a bit of insight into the aviation world," and she follows through. Fagerström responds to comments, and she sometimes makes posts about certain questions that come up again and again.

She shared some common things people don't know about being a pilot with Business Insider.

SEE ALSO: This pilot influencer is giving her nearly 500,000 Instagram followers an inside look at the world of aviation

1. Pilots are allowed to sleep while working, although not both at the same time. "It’s called ‘controlled rest’ and there are of course procedures to follow, like setting a timer," Fagerström told Business Insider.

2. Flying is actually relaxing, "once we’re up in the air and at cruising level," if the weather is good.

3. For Fagerström, the best part of the job is the "feeling after touching down after a tricky approach, and you’ve done well with maneuvering the aircraft all the way from start to finish."

4. Flight school is really intense, and you will be scrutinized. "You’ll most probably have to say goodbye to your social life for a year or two. But I can assure you it’s totally worth it when you get your wings" she said.

5. The busiest time of year for pilots is the holidays, when everyone else is trying to get home, so those are also the most difficult days to take off.

6. Going to the bathroom is surprisingly difficult. "When every single passenger is back in their seats with seat belts on, then you can come out ... while everyone is watching you sneaking into the toilet ... not ideal" she said.

7. You might have to skip dinner if there's turbulence. Fagerström said that if her meal comes when the plane hits a rough patch, she'll have to spend the rest of the flight "watching the speed like a hawk."

We went to Alibaba's 24-hour shopping extravaganza that is like nothing in America, featuring a Mariah Carey performance and an online-shopping-themed Cirque du Soleil act. Here's what it reveals about the future of retail. (BABA)

alibaba gala

SHANGHAI, China — I've experienced the stampedes of Black Friday shoppers. I survived the Prime Day outage of 2018. And, like an increasing number of Americans, I've checked deals on my iPhone during Thanksgiving dinner.

But I have never seen a shopping event quite like Alibaba's Singles Day: 24 hours of massive sales, overwhelming festivities, and, bizarrely enough, Mariah Carey.

In the hours before Sunday, November 11, 2018, Alibaba kicked off its 10th year of Singles Day festivities in Shanghai. Twenty-four hours later, the Chinese e-commerce giant reported that customers spent $30.8 billion, or almost three times as much as the previous year's Black Friday and Cyber Monday shoppers spent combined.

This year, shoppers spent $35.8 billion on Singles Day.

I had the good fortune to be in Shanghai for the entire thing in 2018, witnessing the most over-the-top, futuristic, and exhausting shopping celebration I have ever seen.

Here's what it was like to take part in Alibaba's Singles Day, as well as what it means for the future of the retail industry:

SEE ALSO: Alibaba has raked in $35.8 billion and counting in Singles Day sales, crushing last year's results

Singles Day kicks off with a four-hour "gala." Imagine Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade had quadruplets with Prime Day, and you've got the general idea.

Most people watch the gala — basically a variety show featuring singers, performers, and Allen Iverson overseeing a basketball competition — on TV or on their phones.

People on their phones can shop deals on Alibaba sites such as Taobao and Tmall as they watch the show.

I was, however, actually at the gala — and experiencing the side effects of a mix of jet lag, cold medicine, and a truly wild production.

Sitting with other reporters and Alibaba communications staffers, I was immediately overstimulated, even without the ability to shop online.

The drama is intentional. Alibaba has worked to transform Singles Day from a day of deals to what the company's chief marketing officer, Chris Tung, called a sort of Christmas for brands and customers.

"It has evolved dramatically over the last 10 years to become a true festival," Tung told me the weekend before the 2018 Singles' Day event.

Among the celebrities at the gala, at least one was doing double duty as an Alibaba merchant: Miranda Kerr.

Kerr launched her skincare brand, KORA Organics, on Alibaba's Tmall in 2018.

"It's such a unique event that combines shopping and entertainment in a way that I haven't seen before," Kerr told me.

Our interview was conducted via telephone, with me sitting in the back of a parked car 200 feet from where Kerr was backstage at the gala. Again, it was a hectic scene before the gala even started.

In the arena, fans lapped up the action.

Boy bands!

Romantic duets!

An endless stream of celebrities!

Considering that Alibaba kicked off the gala only two years prior, in 2016, it was slightly shocking how much enthusiasm and star power the company packed in.

It isn't uncommon for American retail giants to get celebrities to perform at events like investor days — stars at Walmart's shareholders event have included Katy Perry and James Corden — but with the potential exception of Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, I had never seen something like this.

And that was before Mariah Carey showed up.

But alas, I had already left the gala before the great diva performed.

I had moved on to the nearby media center, where a robot was mixing cocktails and coffees.

Alibaba's showiness didn't stop with the gala. Hundreds of journalists from around the world were invited to report from the media center, which also served as a showcase for Alibaba's various tech innovations.

In addition to making lattés, these robots could bring food to tables in restaurants and deliver room service in hotels.

The waiter bots are already in use in restaurants in locations of Hema, Alibaba's supermarket chain.

Additionally, the robots were almost uniformly cute — crucial to gaining customers' trust.

However, the robots aren't the main event.

That would be the mega-screen displaying GMV, or gross merchandise volume.

In other words, the screen keeps track of how much money is being spent in online sales through various Alibaba platforms on Singles Day.

An emcee of sorts counts down until midnight. Then 11/11 finally begins.

It was a swift start. With sales from preloaded shopping carts going through in the seconds after midnight, the GMV figure exploded.

Within 10 minutes, Alibaba hit $4.68 billion, already eclipsing estimated sales figures for Amazon's 36-hour Prime Day event.

Alibaba continued to highlight massive numbers well after I stumbled back to the hotel in the wee hours of the morning.

Alibaba's emphasis on GMV is a blessing and a curse for the company, according to some experts.

While the sheer magnitude of the figure helps generate attention, the company's self-celebration doesn't allow for much wiggle room if growth slows.

"The whole world is looking at it — which puts a lot of pressure" on Alibaba, Daniel Zipser, a McKinsey & Company senior partner who leads its consumer and retail practice in Greater China, told me.

Yet 11/11 must go on.

For me as a reporter, November 11 was a blur of visiting Starbucks (an Alibaba partner), speaking with certain executives, and waiting for some others to show up.

Jack Ma, Alibaba's famous founder, showed up at the media center both nights but didn't speak to journalists. Instead, he merely smiled at the GMV screen, snapping a photo on his phone as the company crossed another landmark.

Through it all, the GMV chart just kept climbing.

At the end of the day, Alibaba set another Singles Day record. But more than that, the company did it with a sense of drama that no modern American company could replicate.

The GMV marker topped $30 billion at the end of Singles Day 2018. For comparison, online sales on Black Friday reached $5 billion in 2017, according to Adobe Analytics data, while Cyber Monday sales were roughly $6.6 billion.

As frantic Black Friday masses lose momentum to online shopping, Alibaba has figured out how to bring the hectic overstimulation to e-commerce.

Alibaba is increasingly emphasizing its plans to bridge the gap between online and offline retail with initiatives like the adorable robot waiter. American companies would be well-served to pay attention to the spectacle that is likely to follow.

Travel rewards credit cards

First up are the cards that can get you the most value if you're willing to put in the work: travel rewards credit cards that earn Amex, Chase, and other bank points. You can transfer these points to various airline and hotel partners, as well as use them to book travel directly through your credit card issuer.

The mega-popular Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, Chase Sapphire Reserve, American Express® Gold Card and others fall into this category.

Chase Sapphire Preferred—  The rewards card that started it all. For a $95 annual fee, you get 2x points on travel and dining, not to mention valuable protections like primary car rental insurance and baggage delay insurance. Read the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card review.

Chase Sapphire ReserveThe premium sibling to the Sapphire Preferred has a $450 annual fee, but offers more perks like a $300 annual travel credit and 3x points on travel and dining. Read the Chase Sapphire Reserve review.

American Express Gold Card If dining is one of your top spending categories, the Amex Gold is a great card for you. It earns 4x points at restaurants (and 4x at US supermarkets on up to $25,000 each year, then 1x) and each month you get up to $10 in statement credits when you use the card at GrubHub, Seamless, The Cheesecake Factory, Ruth's Chris Steak House, Boxed, and participating Shake Shacks. There's a $250 annual fee. Read the Amex Gold Card review.

The Platinum Card® from American Express It's one of the most premium personal credit cards out there, with a $550 annual fee and a long list of benefits. You get annual statement credits for airline incidental fees, Saks purchases, and Uber rides, and can access a variety of airport lounges including Amex's own Centurion Lounges. Read the Amex Platinum review.

Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card— Like the Sapphire Preferred, the Venture Rewards Card packs in a lot of benefits for a sub-$100-annual-fee card, and in this case the $95 annual fee is waived the first year. You'll earn 2x miles on all purchases, and 10x miles on hotel bookings made with the card via hotels.com/venture. You can redeem miles to cover travel purchases on your statement, or transfer them to a selection of airline programs. Read the Capital One Venture Rewards card review.

American Express® Green Card Amex recently revamped its Green card from the ground up, and the result is a great rewards card with a moderate annual fee of $150. That fee is especially easy to justify if you can use the card's annual statement credits: up to $100 toward CLEAR membership each year, and up to $100 toward airport lounge access through LoungeBuddy each year. Jack Ma may have stepped down as online marketplace Alibaba's chairman on his 55th birthday on September 10, but Singles' Day is still very much intact.

Alibaba's Singles' Day— the annual shopping extravaganza created by cofounder Jack Ma — just made the Chinese retailer $13 billion in one hour.

Ma grew up poor in communist China, failed his university entrance exam twice, and was rejected from dozens of jobs, including one at KFC, before finding success with his third internet company, Alibaba.

Ma was scrawny and often got into fights with classmates. "I was never afraid of opponents who were bigger than I," he recalls in "Alibaba," a book by Liu Shiying and Martha Avery.

After President Nixon visited Hangzhou in 1972, Ma's hometown became a tourist mecca. As a teenager, Ma started waking up early to visit the city's main hotel, offering visitors tours of the city in exchange for English lessons. The nickname "Jack" was given to him by a tourist he befriended.

After high school, he applied to go to college — but failed the entrance exam twice. He finally passed on the third try, going on to attend Hangzhou Teachers Institute. He graduated in 1988 and started applying to as many jobs as he could.

He received more than a dozen rejections — including from KFC — before being hired as an English teacher. Ma was a natural with his students and loved his job — though he only made $12 a month at a local university.

At the World Economic Forum in 2016, Jack Ma revealed he has been rejected from Harvard — 10 times.

Ma had no experience with computers or coding, but he was captivated by the internet when he used it for the first time during a trip to the US in 1995. He had recently started a translation business and made the trip to help a Chinese firm recover a payment. Ma's first online search was "beer," but he was surprised to find that no Chinese beers turned up in the results. It was then that he decided to found an internet company for China.

Though his first two ventures failed, four years later he gathered 17 of his friends in his apartment and convinced them to invest in his vision for an online marketplace he called "Alibaba." The site allowed exporters to post product listings that customers could buy directly.

Soon, the service started to attract members from all over the world. By October 1999, the company had raised $5 million from Goldman Sachs and $20 million from SoftBank, a Japanese telecom company that also invests in technology companies. The team remained close-knit and scrappy. "We will make it because we are young and we never, never give up," Ma said to a gathering of employees.

He was known for maintaining a sense of fun at Alibaba. In the early 2000s, when the company decided to start Taobao, its eBay competitor, he had his team do handstands during breaks to keep their energy levels up.

When the company first became profitable, Ma gave each employee a can of Silly String to go wild with.

In 2005, Yahoo invested $1 billion in Alibaba in exchange for about a 40% stake in the company. This was huge for Alibaba — at the time it was trying to beat eBay in China — and it would eventually be an enormous win for Yahoo too, netting it $10 billion in Alibaba's IPO alone.

In 2014, Ma told Bloomberg he knew Alibaba had made it big when another customer offered to pay his restaurant bill. The customer, Ma said in the interview, had left Ma a note that read: "I'm your customer of Alibaba group, I made a lot of money and I know you don't make any money. I'll pay the bill for you."

The company's $150-billion IPO was the largest offering for a US-listed company in the history of the New York Stock Exchange. It also made Ma the richest person in China, with an estimated worth of $25 billion at the time. His net worth has now grown to $38.1 billion, according to Forbes.

Ma's fortune comes from his 7.8% stake in Alibaba and a nearly 50% stake in payment-processing service Alipay.

Alibaba employees threw a big party at the company's Hangzhou headquarters to celebrate the IPO. One employee even took the party as the perfect opportunity to propose. Ma told employees at a press conference that he hopes they use their newfound wealth to become "a batch of genuinely noble people, a batch of people who are able to help others, and who are kind and happy."

Alibaba's success may have made Ma an extremely wealthy man, but he has made very few flashy purchases, and he still has some pretty modest hobbies. "I don't think he has changed much, he is still that old style," Xiao-Ping Chen, a friend of Ma, told USA Today. He likes reading and writing kung fu fiction, playing poker, meditating, and practicing tai chi.

One of his greatest passions is the environment. According to Fortune, Ma developed an interest in environmentalism when a member of his wife's family became sick with an illness that Ma suspected was caused by pollution. He has also, according to Fortune, been instrumental in funding a 27,000-acre nature reserve in China.

In 2017, Ma made headlines after meeting President Donald Trump. Despite Trump's protectionist attitude towards trade, Ma said China and the United States were not about to be drawn into a trade war. "Give Trump some time. He's open-minded," Ma told a panel at Davos in January.

Hollywood celebrities weren't the only stars to attend the 2019 People's Choice Awards on Sunday. YouTubers also attended the Santa Monica event.

From David Dobrik to Tana Mongeau, some of the internet's biggest stars showed up wearing fashionable ensembles. Mongeau matched Colleen Ballinger in a sparkling red gown, while Bretman Rock stole the show in a silver suit with a sheer top.

Here's what 10 YouTube stars wore to this year's event.

Tana Mongeau arrived in a glamorous red gown.

The YouTuber's dress had a semi-sheer skirt that extended into a short train, and a single strap that wrapped around her left shoulder.

Mongeau, who's known for her story-time videos, also wore red lipstick and styled her hair in loose waves.

Jackie Aina opted for a metallic minidress and Christian Louboutin heels.

The beauty YouTuber looked glamorous in the long-sleeved dress, which also had a V-shaped neckline and ruched skirt.

To add some extra shine, Aina donned snakeskin-printed heels and glossy lipstick.

Bretman Rock stole the show in a silver suit with a sheer top underneath.

His outfit was comprised of shiny gray pants, a silver snakeskin blazer, and a mesh top with a plunging neckline. To complete his look, he wore patent-leather boots and layers of silver chains.

The beauty YouTuber also incorporated makeup into his red-carpet look, donning sharp black eyeliner and nude lip gloss. He later took home the award for beauty influencer of 2019.

Colleen Ballinger rocked a red minidress with puffy sleeves.

The YouTube comedian might be known for her quirky character Miranda Sings online, but she proved her fashion sense on the red carpet.

She matched her red lipstick to her dazzling dress, and also donned a statement pair of clear heels with pointed black toes.

David Dobrik was the most casually-dressed YouTuber on the red carpet.

He donned a simple black shirt, which he wears in many of his YouTube videos, and pinstriped pants. He also carried a disposable camera, which he used to take photos for his Instagram account, David's Disposable.

Dobrik later took home the award for social star of 2019.

Desi Perkins sparkled in a green dress with a thigh-high slit.

The right side of her dress was held up by a sparkling strap, while the left side had a long sleeve. The beauty YouTuber completed her look with a matching velvet clutch and green sandals.

Rickey Thompson chose a monochromatic look for the red-carpet event.

While Thompson rose to fame on Vine and Instagram, he now stars in the YouTube Red series "Foursome."

He turned heads at the 2019 PCA's by wearing a green suit with puffy sleeves and a belt around the waist. Thompson also wore numerous rings and black shoes with giant gold buckles.

Rachel Levin donned a long-sleeved dress with daring cutouts.

The beauty YouTuber's gown was sleek and included two gold chains that wrapped around her waist.

Levin also brought back a hair trend from the early aughts: a ponytail on the top of her head.

Andrea Russett rocked a white pantsuit covered in sparkles.

Russett, who posts lifestyle videos on YouTube, paired her pantsuit with a sparkling black crop top and pointed heels. She also wore her hair in a ponytail with two loose strands that framed her face.

Alisha Marie wore a dress that combined some of the night's biggest fashion trends.

Not only did the YouTuber's dress have puffy sleeves, but it also had a thigh-high slit and was covered in sparkles. To complete her look, she wore a bunch of rings and see-through heels.
