The top 15 tax havens around the world

british virgin islands

Tax havens are places where business people and other super-wealthy individuals keep money in offshore accounts for tax avoidance and other purposes.

Also known as offshore financial centers (OFCs), these tax shelters are often small, low-tax jurisdictions in remote locations, like the Caribbean islands. In these places, wealthy individuals often hold money within shell companies and anonymous entities.

CORPNET, an Amsterdam-based research group that investigates global networks of corporate control, published a 2017 report in Scientific Reports ranking 24 offshore financial centers by their "sink" number, which indicates roughly how much more money comes into the country than how much should come in based on the size of its economy.

In the Cayman Islands, for example, 331 times more value sinks into the country than is proportionate to the size of its economy.

The European Union releases a tax haven "blacklist"— first published in 2015 and continuously updated — that calls out specific countries in order to improve global tax governance and fight tax fraud, evasion, and avoidance. The EU blacklist pressures nations to make changes and reforms to their tax codes, and blacklisted countries can face sanctions from the EU, according to OXFAM International.

Here are the world's 15 top hax havens, according to CORPNET.

15. Seychelles

Sink: 60

Once a colony of the United Kingdom, Seychelles is an archipelago of islands in the Indian Ocean that has about 2.5 times the area of Washington, DC.

The island nation made headlines in 2018 for being the setting of a mysterious alleged meeting between a Trump-linked private security entrepreneur, a Russian CEO, and a representative of the United Arab Emirates, which was investigated by Robert Mueller as part of the Trump-Russia investigation.

Seychelles was one of 30 countries blacklisted as a tax haven by the EU in 2015, but it was later moved to the "gray list" after making some tax reform commitments.

14. Cyprus

Sink: 62

Cyprus, a Mediterranean island of about 1.2 million people south of Turkey, is investigating corruption charges related to its "golden passport" program, which gives citizenship to foreigners who invest at least $2.2 million in real estate or local business in the country.

13. Nauru

Sink: 67

Nauru, a Pacific island northeast of Australia, is the world's smallest independent republic, with an area of about eight square miles and a population of under 10,000.

In 2001, the tiny island nation was internationally blacklisted amid concerns that it had become a center for money laundering, and it was among the countries blacklisted as a tax haven by the EU in 2015. The OECD upgraded Nauru's tax transparency standards in 2017.

12. Luxembourg

Sink: 71

Luxembourg is one of the wealthiest countries in the world, largely thanks to its financial sector, which makes up more than 35% of its GDP.

The government has put policies in place since 2002 to attract foreign direct investment, but Luxembourg has lost some of its favorable tax advantages in recent years after pressure from the EU and the OECD, according to the CIA World Factbook.

11. Mauritius

Sink: 75

Mauritius, an island nation off the southeast coast of Africa with a population of about 1.4 million, is home to more than 32,000 offshore entities.

It has encouraged foreign investment since the late 1980s and early 1990s, when it enacted the Mauritius Offshore Business Activity Act, which allowed the incorporation of foreign entities with little financial disclosures and extremely low taxation, according to Quartz.

Mauritius was one of 30 countries blacklisted as a tax haven by the EU in 2015, but the EU removed it from the list in October 2019.

T10. Malta

Sink: 100

Malta is an archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea south of Italy with a population of about 450,000.

According to the BBC, companies in Malta pay the lowest tax on profits of any country in the EU. Local businesses pay a 35% tax on profits, but foreign corporations pay as little as 5%.

T10. Marshall Islands

Sink: 100

The Marshall Islands, a chain of islands in the central Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and the Philippines, was under US administration for almost 40 years before gaining independence in 1986.

The island nation of about 76,000 people was one of the countries blacklisted as a tax haven by the EU in 2015, but the EU decided in 2019 to remove it from the blacklist because the country is outlawing letterbox companies that are used for tax avoidance and hiding the identities of wealthy taxpayers.

8. Curacao

Sink: 115

Curacao, a Dutch Caribbean island, is known as an offshore financial center.

In 2017, it was put on the EU's "gray list" of countries that need to improve their tax policy to comply with EU transparency regulations but who have committed to doing so.

7. Liechtenstein

Sink: 225

Liechtenstein, a European country smaller than Washington, DC, has a thriving financial services sector and one of the highest per capita income levels in the world.

According to the EU, it has also served as a tax haven, prompting the union to blacklist the country in 2015. Liechtenstein agreed to crack down on tax evasion, but it still has one of the lowest corporate tax rates in Europe.

6. Samoa

Sink: 277

In 2015, the South Pacific island state of 200,000 residents was ranked the world's most financially secretive nation in a list of tax havens compiled by the Tax Justice Network.

Samoa is also on the EU's blacklist of global tax havens.

5. Cayman Islands

Sink: 331

The Cayman Islands is one of the world's most notorious tax shelters because it has no corporate tax, no personal income tax, and no capital gains tax.

It was one of 30 countries blacklisted as a tax haven by the EU in 2015.

In October 2019, the Cayman Islands promised to reveal the identities of every person who owns a company there by 2023, Quartz reported.

4. Bermuda

Sink: 374

The economy of the British island territory, which is home to about 71,000 people, relies primarily on insurance and other financial services.

Oxfam named Bermuda the world's worst corporate tax haven in 2016, and it was one of 30 countries blacklisted as a tax haven by the EU in 2015.

3. Jersey

Sink: 397

Jersey, one of the Channel Islands between England and France, has had a reputation as a tax haven since wealthy Brits started moving there and transferring their money there in the 1920s to take advantage of its lack of wealth and inheritance taxes.

The Tax Justice Network this year ranked Jersey as one of the most aggressive tax havens in the world.

2. Taiwan

Sink: 2,278

In 2017, Taiwan was named a potential tax haven by the EU Economic and Financial Affairs Council. Taiwan is a disputed nation; while China claims it as one of its own territories, Taiwan considers itself an independent democracy that champions human-rights issues.

The EU removed Taiwan from its blacklist in 2019 after it made commitments to reform its tax system.

1. British Virgin Islands

Sink: 5,235

The world's top tax haven, the British Virgin Islands, holds more than 5,000 times the value of what its economy should hold.

The self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom, home to about 35,802 people, was one of 30 countries blacklisted as a tax haven by the EU in 2015.

In 2017, British Virgin Islands officials released a report claiming the British territory was not a tax haven, but a strong contributor to the global economy and facilitator of international trade and investment.

The EU gave the British Virgin Islands until the end of 2019 to comply with tax reforms and avoid landing on its tax haven blacklist in 2020.

One of the most famous names associated with the British Virgin Islands is Richard Branson, the billionaire entrepreneur who owns Necker Island, a 74-acre private island with a luxury resort that he often opens up to friends like Barack and Michelle Obama.

We went shopping at Trader Joe's and Wegmans to see which beloved grocer is better, and found Wegmans has a crucial advantage

Wegmans opening hot food

On the surface, Trader Joe's and Wegmans seem to have a lot in common. Both chains focus on store brands and have energized fans that rave about them.

With 488 stores across the country, Trader Joe's is larger than Wegmans, which has just 101 stores in New England and the mid-Atlantic regions. But despite the disparity in size, both chains have cultivated some of the most loyal followings in the industry.

Trader Joe's has some of the best sales per square footage in the grocery industry and prime locations in big cities like New York are regularly packed during peak shopping times. New Wegmans stores regularly draw thousands of fans — or Wegmaniacs — to their opening days. Most recently, more than 25,000 people showed up for the opening day of the newest Wegmans store, located in Brooklyn, New York, in October.

Beyond the hype, both grocery chains are known for their quality in-house brands that generally help keep prices low.

Naturally, this is the head-to-head we've all been waiting for, the battle of the smaller, thematically-infused grocery chains.

After visiting both stores, the underdog was the clear winner. Wegmans won us over with its exceptional customer service and store design. But the real kicker was the numerous hot and ready-made takeout options.

Here's what we saw:

SEE ALSO: We compared products from Wegmans' brand with the same items from Trader Joe's to see which beloved private label is better

First, we stopped a Trader Joe's in Manhattan's Upper West Side neighborhood.

Trader Joe's is meant to look like a shipping port and we saw design elements reinforcing this theme from the moment we arrived.

Inside, the store kept up the nautical theme with some light wood shelving structures that looked similar to shipping containers.

And instead of a classic "Employees Only" sign, we found a section labeled "Crew Quarters."

As we wandered through the store, we also occasionally heard the tolling of a shipping bell, which indicated a customer in need of assistance.

The produce section boasted a ton of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Here too, the seafarer theme was pervasive. This corn was sitting in a crate that looked like it had just been loaded off a cargo ship.

And in many cases, the prices were extraordinarily low. These bananas were only $0.19 each.

Single avocados were going for $1.79 each, so we opted for this $4.99 bunch of miniature avocados instead.

The garlic at Trader Joe's was also super cheap because of the company's decision to eliminate the plastic packaging around some food to help the company eliminate one million pounds of plastic in its stores in 2019.

Source: Trader Joe's

Next, we headed to the aisles of packaged food, where we were delighted to see what appeared to be some hand-painted signs in some of the displays.

Almost every item we found was from Trader Joe's brand. Instead of the name-brand Honey Nut Cheerios, we found Honey Nut O's.

Though it was somewhat upsetting to not have that name-brand choice, Trader Joe's products seemed almost identical to name-brand products in some cases. And they were generally super cheap.

For meals, there was a plethora of yummy-looking options in the frozen section ...

... and some raw meat cuts as well. We even found a nice supply of kosher chicken.

There weren't many options for ready-made food. We did, however, find a cute little station where we could taste some products near the back of the store.

And though there wasn't an official bakery in the store, we found some delicious-looking cupcakes that looked ready to eat.

At the checkout area, the line was long but it moved surprisingly fast. Here, employees raised a numbered paddle to signify their lane was open.

We opted for brown paper bags at checkout but were informed that we could have been entered into a raffle to win a Trader Joe's gift card if we had brought our own reusable bags.

Overall, we enjoyed the nautical experience of Trader Joe's. The low prices and endearing store experience were the greatest strengths of the store.

Next, we went to the new Wegmans store in Brooklyn, New York, which recently opened at the end of October.

From the moment we entered the store, we knew we were in for a completely different experience.

Like Trader Joe's, Wegmans is designed according to a theme. In this case, the store is meant to look and feel like a European open-air market.

Source: Wegmans

The warm lighting and dark wood finish of the food displays helped establish this theme. Plus, the store walls had the facade of a building and marketplace, complete with canopies and windows that were lit from the inside.

The produce section was filled with fresh and pre-cut fruit and vegetables. Overall, the prices seemed standard and there were a lot of organic options that were indicated by green signs.

The store made it a point to let customers know about its bananas that were going for $.049 a pound, which likely cost more than the $0.19 each bananas at Trader Joe's.

The display tables were elaborately decorated. Some fruit was popping out of decorative wicker baskets.

Plus, a lot of the signs looked they were handmade like those at Trader Joe's, which added a personal touch to this store as well.

In the aisles, we found tons of Wegmans-brand products, like this cereal for $3.99. For the most part, the Wegmans products seemed cheaper than name-brand products and included everything from snacks ...

... to Kombucha tea.

There was even a little testing station for us to try some of the Wegmans Kombucha in the store.

Despite the plethora of Wegmans-brand options, there were a ton of name-brand products here as well. This was one advantage that Trader Joe's lacked, for the most part.

We also found an entire section for shoppers to fill their own bags of candy in the middle of an aisle.

We were shocked to find so many chances to connect with the shopping experience in the store. We could watch Parmigiano-Reggiano get sliced right before our eyes at a cheese station ...

... or take a look at some lobsters before they were cooked near the seafood counters.

Plus, almost every employee in the store looked thrilled to be there. The customer service at Wegmans went above and beyond the expected norm.

We followed our noses to the main event of the day: Wegmans' hot food and takeout section. Here, a smorgasbord of dishes awaited us.

There were sections for all different types of cuisine, including Mediterranean and Asian. There were also separate counters to order pizza and burgers as well as a large number of ready-made sushi options.

Business Insider's Irene Jiang said her review that the sushi she ate from this Wegmans store was some of the best sushi she's had in New York.

Read more:I just ate some of the best sushi I've had in New York, and it came from a supermarket fridge

A massive bakery with mouth-watering goodies was not hard to find. There was also a smaller area with a whole selection of kosher baked goods as well.

We noticed that there was a coffee station strategically placed at the front of the store.

And an entire sitting area upstairs that let customers eat their purchases in comfort, away from the rest of the store. Up here, there was also a bar that was open during certain hours of the day.

The checkout area at Wegmans looked more traditional than the one at Trader Joe's and had the option for some last-minute impulse-buys.

As we left, we were certain that Wegmans was the clear winner over Trader Joe's, despite being the smaller chain.

Trader Joe's, in its zeal for low prices and lack of frills, just didn't have the equivalent of Wegman's delicious hot food stations, bakery, and take-out centers,

These factors, on top of the low prices and superior customer service, made Wegmans the winner in this grocery head-to-head.

Democracy is in trouble, despite popular uprisings and dynamic social movements in Lebanon, Hong Kong and across Europe and Latin America.

Scholars say countries across the globe are experiencing a rise in autocratic rule, with declines in democratic ideals and practice. Autocratic rule — also known as authoritarianism — is when one leader or political party exercises complete power to govern a country and its people.

The year 2008 was when democracy peaked, according to a prominent democracy advocacy group, Freedom House. That's when the world had the highest percentage ever of fully "free countries," at 46.1%.

That declined to 44.1% in 2018, though full or partial democracy is still the most common form of governance.

Definitions of democracy vary. All citizens in a democracy have the ability to vote in elections, which should be free and fair. Independent media, freedom of speech and assembly and the rule of law feature in most contemporary perceptions of democracy.

Democratic declines are most notable in the regions with the world's largest concentration of democracies. That includes Europe, North America and Latin America.

One example: The United States in 2018 was rated a "flawed democracy," dropping from 21st to 25th place among 167 countries and territories.

In the old days, autocrats often came to or retained power through military coups and violent crackdowns. Now the shift from democracy to autocracy is slower and less obvious.

While control over security forces remains essential in the autocratic playbook, overt strong-arm tactics aren't.

Top 10 list

I spent more than 15 years with the United Nations, where I advised governments and democracy advocates on how to strengthen the rule of law, human rights and democratic governance. I'm now a scholar of international law.

I've learned that today's leaders with authoritarian tendencies aren't just interested in using brute force to rise to power.

They are smarter, more resilient and can adjust their methods to take account of new developments, like modern technologies and a globalized economy.

Here are some of the newest tactics used by would-be authoritarians:

The Conversation

1. Extend executive power.

The mainstay of today's authoritarianism is strengthening your power while simultaneously weakening government institutions, such as parliaments and judiciaries, that provide checks and balances.

The key is to use legal means that ultimately give democratic legitimacy to the power grab. Extreme forms of this include abolishing presidential term limits, which was done in China; and regressive constitutional reforms to expand presidential power, like in Turkey.

2. Repress dissent and citizen efforts to hold government accountable.

Restrictions on funding and other bureaucratic limitations silence the ability of the people to hold accountable those in power. More than 50 countries have passed laws that stifle citizen groups. Democracies have also jumped on this bandwagon. Limitations on permits for public protest, detention of protesters and excessive use of force to break up demonstrations are frequently used tools.

3. Capture elite support and, when needed, demonize them too.

Economic growth and prosperity are critical to retaining elite or oligarchical support for autocratic leaders. Whether through state-owned businesses, media conglomerates or more sophisticated connections between governments and free-market corporations, money and politics, translated into government favors for the rich, can be a toxic mix for democracy.

Ironically, popular distaste with elite corruption is so high that modern autocratic populists, such as President Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil, have even risen to power on anti-corruption promises.

4. Appeal to populism and nationalism.

Most would-be autocratic leaders today exploit existing tensions within complex societies in order to solidify their support.

In many places, fears of migrants and refugees have fueled resurgent nationalism, driving policies like UK's Brexit. In India, religiously based nationalism has maintained the power of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Blaming external forces for a country's problems, such as Hungarian leader Viktor Orban's demonization of George Soros, a Hungarian-born philanthropist who supports democracy-building, is also common.

5. Control information at home; misinform abroad.

While propaganda and state-owned media is not new, control of modern technology and information has become a key battleground.

China has developed sophisticated technologies to censor and prevent the circulation of unwanted information and to track individuals in society.

Russia is at the vanguard of state media control at home while generating misinformation abroad. Many smaller countries have used internet blackouts to block organizing and communicating by social movements.

6. Cripple the opposition.

Damaging the opposition parties, while not completely destroying them, is now essential. Infiltrating parties, co-opting members and using pure scare tactics are some possible actions in the autocrat's playbook.

This serves the purpose of retaining a target for pseudo-political competition while also stymieing the potential for new, more democratic forces to gain traction.

7. Covert election manipulation.

Mostly gone are the days of vote-rigging and vote-buying as a path to power. Would-be autocrats have found cleverer ways to tilt the playing field in their favor.

These new tactics include hampering media access, gerrymandering, changing election and voter eligibility rules and placing allies on electoral commissions.

8. Play the emergency card.

Some autocratic leaders continue to use traditional strong-arm tactics, like declaring states of emergency, to enable further repression.

Since 2001, using the threat of terrorism or organized crime has played well for furthering autocratic rule. President Rodrigo Duterte's drug war, which seems to have resulted in thousands dead in the Philippines, is one illustration.

Since an attempted coup in 2016 up until 2018, for example, Turkey was under a state of emergency which enabled President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to jail and persecute academics, government officials, media and human rights advocates.

9. Extend your model and influence.

Today's autocratic rulers are not keeping to themselves.

Using the international stage and their growing economic prowess, countries like China are spreading their influence through funding initiatives such as the Belt and Road to build infrastructure across Asia to Europe. They're hiring professional consultants to advise and lobby foreign capitals for policies that reinforce their power.

10. Learn and share.

Characterized as "autocratic learning" by scholars, national authorities from Russia, China, Iran, Venezuela, Belarus, Syria and other places are developing and exchanging models for containing threats of social movements and the so-called "color revolutions."

International meetings and intergovernmental clubs can provide a platform for exchange. For example, Prime Minister Hun Sen of Cambodia has successfully rallied neighbor governments to help oppress opposition to his rule using the regional organization ASEAN. Government officials in Malaysia recently blocked Cambodian opposition members from returning to their country via Malaysia.

Direction unknown.

Some experts claim the world is at a "tipping point" where decreasing faith in democracy will drive the dominance of autocracy globally.

The social movements of today inspire some hope that civil society — a key ingredient for democracy — though under pressure, is fighting the trend.

Nonetheless, strengthening democracy across the globe will prove impossible if even the most established democracies today fall prey to the tactics of would-be autocrats.

These are the countries where Russia's shadowy Wagner Group mercenaries operate

Russian military in Syria

  • Two members of the Wagner Group were arrested in November on allegations of spying. The two men were reportedly meeting with Saif Gaddafi, the son of ousted dictator Muammar Gaddafi, in an effort to bring the younger Gaddafi back to power in Libya.
  • The Wagner Group is a mercenary group that's been closely linked to supporting Russian objectives in conflict zones.

In April 2018, then-CIA Director Mike Pompeo confirmed that the US killed hundreds of Russians during a large firefight in Syria in early February.

"In Syria now, a handful of weeks ago, the Russians met their match," Pompeo said. "A couple hundred Russians were killed."

The Russians were part of Wagner Group, or Vagner Group, a private mercenary group reportedly contracted by the Syrian government to capture and secure oil and gas fields from ISIS.

The Wagner Group started getting attention in 2014 when its mercenaries fought alongside Russian-backed separatists in Ukraine, before moving to Syria.

Here's what we know about the areas where these mercenaries are operating, and what they're doing there.

1. Libya

Washington Post reporters Missy Ryan and Sudarsan Rhagavan reported on Nov. 18 that two Russian nationals accused of spying in Libya are believed to be part of the Wagner Group.

Fathi Bashagha, the interior minister of Libya's UN-backed government, the Government of National Accord (GNA) said that the two Russian nationals were arrested on suspicion of attempting to influence local elections and trying to gather intelligence on some of the GNA's military operations.

A Wagner commander told RFERL in March 2018 that Wagner would be operating in Libya in the near future; Libyan and US officials believe that time has arrived, with Wagner mercenaries fighting on the side of Khalifa Hafter, a rebel commander fighting against the GNA.

The Washington Post, citing a US official with knowledge of the incident, said the Russian government was putting "a lot of pressure" on the GNA to release the two Russians, saying the two men were part of a Russian project to expand influence in Libya.

The two men were reportedly meeting with Saif Gaddafi, the son of ousted dictator Muammar Gaddafi, in an effort to bring the younger Gaddafi back to power in Libya. He is wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity committed while his father was in power.

2. Syria

In 2018, there were about 2,500 Wagner mercenaries in Syria, according to the BBC, but the figures have varied.

In 2015-2016, Wagner mercenaries moved from Ukraine to Syria, Sergey Sukhankin, an associate expert at the International Centre for Policy Studies in Kyiv and Jamestown Foundation fellow, told Business Insider in an email.

The mercenary group was contracted by Syria's state-owned General Petroleum Corp to capture and secure gas and oil fields by ISIS, reportedly being given 25% of the proceeds, according to the Associated Press.

A Russian journalist who helped break the story about the mercenaries killed by the US military in February died in April 2018 after mysteriously falling from a balcony

3. Sudan

Wagner mercenaries were sent to Sudan in January 2018, according to Stratfor.

The Wagner mercenaries were sent to Sudan "in a conflict against the South Sudan" to back up Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir's government "militarily and hammer out beneficial conditions for the Russian companies," Sukhankin said.

The mercenaries are also protecting gold, uranium and diamond mines, Sukhankin said, adding that the latter is the "most essential commodity."

Russian President Vladimir Putin has a cozy relationship with al-Bashir. The two leaders met in Moscow in late 2017, where al-Bashir asked Putin for protection from the US.

The Hague has had an arrest warrant out for al-Bashir since 2009 for crimes against humanity.

4. Central African Republic

In January 2018, Stratfor reported that Wagner mercenaries might soon be sent to CAR, and Sukhankin said that there are now about 370 mercenaries in CAR and Sudan.

Sukhankin said that Wagner mercenaries have the same general mission in CAR — protecting lucrative mines and propping up the government regime.

In December 2017, the UN allowed Russia to begin selling weapons to the CAR, one of the many ways Moscow is trying to influence the continent. The CAR government is trying to combat violence being perpetrated by multiple armed groups along ethnic and religious lines.

"Russian instructors training our armed forces will greatly strengthen their effectiveness in combating plunderers," President Faustin-Archange Touadera said in April 2018, according to RT, a Russian state-owned media outlet.

"The Russian private sector is also seeking to invest in the country's infrastructure and education," RT reported.

"Moscow seems more interested in filling its coffers through the Wagner deals than in preparing for a massive investment drive [in Africa]," Stratfor reported.

The Wagner Group is likely operating in other countries.

"Potentially, the Balkans if any conflict erupts," Sukhankin said. "The Russians had sent PMC's in 1992 to Bosnia. In case something occurs, this might happen once again."

  • The 2003 film "Elf" is a modern classic in the holiday movie genre, both because of its Christmas cheer and New York City backdrop.
  • To celebrate the film, Club Wyndham, a vacation and ownership exchange company, is offering guests the chance to stay in a suite inspired by the movie during the 2019 holiday season.
  • The suite features hundreds of paper snowflakes, a wall made of gifts, and Buddy's favorite snacks, including marshmallows and spaghetti.
  • The reservation also comes with complimentary tickets to the Empire State Building and the Rockefeller Center ice skating rink.
  • The suite will be available to the public for stays from December 2 through December 20, and the cost for the suite begins at $399 per night. You can find out more about the holiday suite here.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

"Elf" is one of the most beloved Christmas movies, in large part because of Buddy's unfailing Christmas cheer.

The 2003 film starring Will Ferrell follows Buddy as he tries to bring Christmas cheer to New York City, making hundreds of paper snowflakes and singing as often as he can.

Now, Club Wyndham, part of the world's largest vacation and ownership exchange company, is trying to do the same with a room inspired by "Elf" in its New York City location.

Club Wyndham rooms are typically only available to members, but the organization is opening this one-of-kind suite to the public throughout December in honor of the holiday season, according to a Club Wyndham press release provided to Insider.

The holiday cheer starts at the door of the "Elf"-inspired room, which looks like Buddy's iconic green suit.

The door is also marked with the phrase, "Oh, you must be here about the story," which is the opening line of the movie.

Upon entering, guests will be greeted by a ceiling covered in hundreds of paper snowflakes.

The room also features a life-size toy soldier, a giant candy cane, a large Christmas tree, and a pile of presents, according to the Club Wyndham press release.

However, the gifts are just for decoration, so don't try to open them if you're visiting.

The main room also features a wall of presents.

The suite can sleep four guests, as the couch that sits below the present wall folds out into a bed.

The suite also features a kitchen, which is stocked with Buddy-approved snacks.

Buddy's favorite foods, including spaghetti, marshmallows, chocolate sauce, Pop-Tarts, cookie-dough rolls, M&Ms, and liters of soda, will be in the room, according to the press release.

Sweet treats like hot chocolate are also available in the Club Wyndham rooftop throughout December.

The cheer continues in the master bedroom, where more paper snowflakes and gifts await.

Red and green pillows add to the room's festive decor, as does a faux-fur throw blanket.

"Every detail of this 'Elf'-inspired suite was designed to put families in awe from the moment they walk in," said Noah Brodsky, chief brand officer for Wyndham Destinations, in the press release.

The bedroom also features an additional gift wall, transforming the suite into the North Pole.

Faux snow sits on the window sill, adding to the winter vibe.

Even the bathroom is decorated with holiday cheer.

The bathtub looks like an oversized gift, and garland touches can be seen throughout the room.

The bathroom also features complimentary bath "snowball" bombs, according to the press release.

The suite also comes with toys for guests to enjoy during their stay, such as Etch-A-Sketches, Legos, and toy trains.

However, you can't take the toys with you when you leave, so be sure you don't accidentally pack them in your bag.

"Visiting New York City during the holidays is at the top of many travelers' bucket lists," said Brodsky.

"We think there's no better way to do it than to get families immersed into Buddy the Elf's whimsical Christmas world," he went on to say.

The reservation also comes with complimentary admission for four to the Empire State Building and tickets to the Rockefeller Center ice skating rink, in another nod to "Elf."

The suite is available for the general public to book a stay from December 2 to December 20.

But Club Wyndham members will be able to book the room from December 21 to December 26.

The cost of the suite begins at $399 per night. You can find out more about the reservation here.

kfc nashville hot chicken waffles

Why have plain chicken and waffles, when you could have chicken and waffles with an extra kick?

Fans of KFC's chicken and waffles will be pleased to know that on November 18 spicy versions of the meal will be arriving in locations nationwide for a limited time.

While KFC has been selling its Nashville Hot Chicken since January 2016, this marks the first time that patrons will be able to taste it alongside Belgian-style waffles.

Meals come in multiple options: a waffle sandwich, a three-piece tender meal, or a basket including one breast, two-piece thigh, and a drumstick. The Nashville Hot Chicken can also come as part of KFC's Big Basket meal deal.

When we first heard about the launch of KFC's new Nashville Hot Chicken and Waffles meals, we knew we had to get our hands on the waffle combos ourselves.

Here are our thoughts on KFC's lineup of sweet, savory, and spicy new items.

SEE ALSO: I tried keto meals from 5 fast-food chains and found there was a huge variety in what you can get

Looking at the spread of crispy chicken breasts, thighs, drumsticks, and fillets, our mouths began to water. Everything looked and smelled fresh out of the fryer.

The tenders with Nashville hot oil were truly elevated.

The breast, thigh, and drum basket also impressed — what could be better than a crispy drumstick doused in spicy oil and maple syrup?

However, the real star of the show, perhaps unsurprisingly, was the Nashville Hot Chicken and Waffles sandwich.

Layered in between two fluffy waffles, this sandwich brought the chain's signature fried chicken to a whole new level. And, with the addition of Nashville hot oil, we truly couldn't put this down.

The crispy folds of breading wrapped around the fillet promisingly and the waffle-to-chicken ratio appeared near-perfect. Admittedly, it looked just like the advertisement.

Biting into the sandwich, we were floored. The chicken was crunchy and crispy on the outside, but perfectly moist on the inside. It wasn't too much chicken, and it wasn't too little. The hot oil wasn't overpowering, and we could still taste every flavor while enjoying the kick.

The waffles were also very balanced. They were sweet but not sugary and toed the line between crispy and soft. This was the Goldilocks of chicken and waffles sandwiches — everything was just right.

We hadn't yet added the maple syrup on top of the sandwich, so now seemed as good a time as any to do so. The Mrs. Butterworth's syrup that came with the meal was nothing special but, combined with the sandwich, it blew us away.

Waffles and syrup can both verge on being too sweet in theory, but the spiciness of the hot oil cut through it all to create a balanced tasting experience.

Once the sandwich was drenched in gooey syrup, we decided to switch to a knife and fork. This allowed us more control over the chicken, waffle, and syrup ratio. Every bite was just as delicious as the last, alternating between notes of sweet, savory, and spicy.

While we definitely couldn't eat this every day, this decadent, rich, and delicious meal is simply a must-try.

If you can handle the spice level, definitely go for the hot oil versions of each. Sweet and savory may be a classic combination, but sweet, savory, and spicy truly blows the competition out of the water.

Painfully slow hurricanes, deadly heat, and cities without water: What the climate crisis will look like in the next 10 years, according to experts

venice flood

  • In the last few years, we've seen record-breaking temperatures, intense hurricanes and wildfires, and unprecedented ice melt.
  • All of these are predicted consequences of climate change and are expected to get worse in the coming years.
  • Addressing this threat in the next 10 years is critical: Scientists say the world must slash its carbon emissions in half by 2030 to avoid catastrophic warming.
  • Here's what we can expect in the next decade.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more.

We only have a decade to avoid the worst consequences of climate change.

That's the warning the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) put out last year. But so far, nations are not slashing emissions enough to keep Earth's temperature from rising more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels — the threshold established in the Paris climate agreement.

"What we know is that unabated climate change will really transform our world into something that is unrecognizable," Kelly Levin, a senior associate at the World Resources Institute's climate program, told Business Insider.

That transformation has already begun. The last few years saw record-breaking temperatures, catastrophic and bizarre storms, and unprecedented ice melt. That's all likely to get worse by 2030.

Here's what we can expect in the next 10 years.

SEE ALSO: Before-and-after photos reveal how landmarks have been ravaged by fires, floods, and melting ice over the last decade

Scientists attribute the increasing frequency of record-breaking temperatures, unprecedented ice melt, and extreme weather shifts to greenhouse-gas emissions.

Fossil fuels like coal contain compounds like carbon dioxide and methane, which trap heat from the sun. Extracting and burning these fuels for energy releases those gases into the atmosphere, where they accumulate and heat up the Earth over time.

"As long as we burn fossil fuels and load the atmosphere with carbon pollution, it all gets worse," climate scientist Michael Mann told Business Insider in an email.

Last year, the IPCC warned that we only have until 2030 to act in order to avoid the worst consequences of severe climate change.

According to the IPCC, the world's carbon emissions have to fall by 45% by 2030 to keep the world's average temperature from rising more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

So the next 10 years are crucial for any efforts to slow this trend.

If Earth warms more than 1.5 degrees, scientists think the world's ecosystems could start to collapse.

"The choices that we make today are going to have profound impacts," Levin said.

Even if nations stick to the goals they set under the Paris climate agreement, emissions will still likely be too high, according to the IPCC.

Under the voluntary goals set in the Paris agreement, the world would still emit the equivalent of 52 to 58 gigatons of carbon dioxide per year by 2030, according to the report. (This is measured as an "equivalent" in order to factor in other greenhouse gases, like methane, which is 84 times more effective at trapping heat than carbon dioxide.)

So far, most countries are not on track anyway.

Regardless of what actions we take, there are a few changes scientists know we'll see in the next 10 years.

That's because the world will keep getting warmer even if we stop emitting greenhouse gases immediately.

In the worst case scenario, we might even the 1.5-degree temperature-rise mark by 2030.

The globe's ice caps will continue to melt, and crucial ice sheets like the one in Greenland might start down an irreversible path toward disappearing completely.

"Somewhere between 1.5 and 2 degrees, there's a tipping point after which it will no longer be possible to maintain the Greenland Ice Sheet,"Ruth Mottram, a climate scientist at the Danish Meteorological Institute, told Inside Climate News. "What we don't have a handle on is how quickly the Greenland Ice Sheet will be lost."

Greenland's ice is already approaching that tipping point, according to a study published in May. Whereas the melting that happened during warm cycles used to get balanced out when new ice formed during cool cycles, warm periods now cause significant meltdown and cool periods simply pause it.

That makes it difficult for the ice sheet to regenerate what it's losing.

That will lead to more sea-level rise — about 0.3 to 0.6 feet on average globally by 2030, according to the US' National Climate Assessment.

In addition to melting ice, rising ocean temperatures cause seas to rise because warm water takes up more volume. As the globe heats up, scientists expect that simple fact of physics to account for about 75% of future sea-level rise.

The risk of high-tide flooding (which happens in the absence of storms or severe weather) is rapidly increasing for communities on the US Gulf and East Coasts.

In 2018, the US Northeast saw a median of one major sunny-day flood per year. By 2030, projections suggest the region will see a median of five such floods per year. By 2045, that number could grow to 25 floods.

The rising seawater won't be distributed evenly across the globe.

Low-lying countries like Bangladesh, Vietnam, and the Seychelles are especially vulnerable. Rising oceans have already begun to threaten cities like Miami, New Orleans, Venice, Jakarta, and Lagos.

Some areas could see sea levels up to 6 feet higher by the end of the century.

Extra warmth and water means hurricanes will become slower and stronger. In the next decade, we're likely to see more cyclones like Hurricane Dorian, which sat over the Bahamas for nearly 24 hours.

That's because hurricanes use warm water as fuel, so as Earth's oceans and air heat up, tropical storms get stronger, wetter, and slower.

Over the past 70 years or so, the speed of hurricanes and tropical storms has slowed about 10% on average, according to a 2018 study

When storms are slower, their forceful winds, heavy rain, and surging tides have much more time to cause destruction. In the Bahamas, Dorian leveled entire towns.

"The slower you go, that means more rain. That means more time that you're going to have those winds. That's a long period of time to have hurricane-force winds," National Hurricane Center director Ken Graham said in a Facebook Live video as Dorian approached the Bahamas.

A study published earlier this month found that the frequency of the most damaging hurricanes has increased 330% century-over-century.

To make matters worse, a warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture. The peak rain rates of storms have increased by 30% over the past 60 years.

That means up to 4 inches of water per hour. Hurricane Harvey in 2017 was a prime example of this: After it made landfall, Harvey weakened to a tropical storm then stalled for days, dumping unprecedented amounts of rain on the Houston area. Scientist Tom Di Liberto described it as the "storm that refused to leave."

Hurricanes are likely to intensify more rapidly as well.

"It's pretty well understood that if the water is warmer and it's causing more moist air to come up, you have the potential of a storm to grow quickly and intensely," Brian Haus, a researcher who simulates hurricanes at the University of Miami, previously told Business Insider.

Overall, extreme weather is expected grow more common and intense.

"Certain types of extreme events in the US have already become more frequent and intense and long-lasting," Levin said. "There's no reason to think that we're not going to start to see an amplification of what we've been seeing."

The World Health Organization (WHO) projects that, overall, climate change will kill an additional 241,000 people per year by 2030.

The WHO expects that heat-related illnesses will be a major culprit, killing up to 121,464 additional people by 2030.

In the coming years, experts expect to see "day zeros"— the term for the moment when a city's taps run dry.

In January 2018, Cape Town, South Africa, got dangerously close to this reality: The government announced the city was three months from day zero. Residents successfully limited their water use enough to make it to the next rainy season, however.

The IPCC projects severe reductions in water resources for 8% of the global population from 2021 to 2040.

Dry vegetation in hot regions lights up easily, which means more frequent, bigger wildfires.

"Climate change, with rising temperatures and shifts in precipitation patterns, is amplifying the risk of wildfires and prolonging the season," the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said in a July release.

2016 study found that climate change nearly doubled the amount of forest that burned in the western US between 1984 and 2015, adding over 10 billion additional acres of burned area. In California in particular, the annual area burned in summer wildfires increased fivefold from 1972 to 2018.

We're also likely to see more wildfires in the Arctic, which is warming almost twice as fast as the global average. That means Arctic sea ice is also disappearing.

Rapid warming means that crucial sea ice is melting, which accelerates warming even more.

"You take what was a reflective surface, the white ice, and you expose darker oceans underneath it," Levin said. "That can lead to a much greater absorption of solar radiation, and knock-on warming impacts as well as change of weather patterns."

The Amazon rainforest is in trouble as well, largely because farmers and loggers are cutting it down so rapidly.

A 2008 study projected that humans would clear away 31% of the Amazon by 2030. Another 24% would be damaged by drought or logging, the study found.

People have already cut down 20% of the Amazon. If another 20% disappears, that could trigger a feedback loop known as a "dieback," in which the forest could dry out and become a savannah.

"The risk of transforming the Amazon to a savannah-like state — it could have a tremendous impact for our ability worldwide to get a handle on the climate-change problem," Levin said.

That's because the Amazon stores up to 140 billion tons of carbon dioxide — the equivalent of 14 decades' worth of human emissions. Releasing that would accelerate global warming.

"You have a vital carbon sink no longer acting as a carbon sink, but instead acting as a carbon source," Levin added.

Other crucial ecosystems face collapse in the next decade as well. At present rates, it's expected that 60% of all coral reefs will be highly or critically threatened by 2030.

High ocean temperatures can cause coral to expel the algae living in its tissue and turn white, a process called coral bleaching.

It's an increasingly dire problem, given that oceans absorb 93% of the extra heat that greenhouse gases trap in the atmosphere. Recent research revealed that the seas are heating up 40% faster, on average, than the prior estimate

The consequences of coral bleaching extend beyond the coral itself, since reefs house 25% of all marine life and provide the equivalent of $375 billion in goods and services each year, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

About 55% of the world's oceans could suffer due to rising temperatures, acidification, decreasing oxygen, and other symptoms of climate change by 2030.

These largely irreversible changes will eventually force mass migrations of marine life, upend ocean ecosystems, and threaten human livelihoods that depend on the ocean, according to a 2017 study. Many species that can't adapt could die out.

"Climate impacts are also going to exacerbate social inequality," Levin said.

That's because people with fewer resources will be less able to avoid the worst impacts.

"That National Climate Assessment shows that residents, for example, in rural communities who often have less capacity to adapt, are going to be especially hard-hit given their dependence on agriculture," Levin explained.

She added: "You can think also of the scenario of the poor who live in cities who could be at greater exposure to heat stress if they lack air conditioning and heat waves increase in frequency and duration."

A 2015 report from the World Bank predicted that the climate crisis will push an additional 100 million people into extreme poverty by 2030.

That's because global crop yields could fall by 5% by 2030 in the face of climate change, according to the report. That will make food more scarce and more expensive, especially in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia.

Ultimately, "nobody is free from the impacts of climate change," Mann said.

"If you're on the coast, you're treated by hurricanes and sea-level rise," he added. "If you're in the western US, more intense, faster-spreading wildfires, worse drought. And we're seeing unprecedented heat waves and flooding events throughout the US."

To avoid these devastating consequences, "we need annual emissions to be about half of what they are now by 2030," Levin said.

That means "we need to shift across the board in terms of policies, technologies, and behavior," she added.

Scientists say the world has to shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy, especially transforming the way we travel and produce food.

"That means we need politicians who are willing to act in our interest rather than on the part of vested interests," Mann said. "Voting in the 2020 election is probably the single-most important thing we can do to address climate change."

Levin and the IPCC both say that, since we're so far off the path towards quitting fossil fuels, the transition will also require technologies that suck carbon out of the atmosphere.

"It's definitely going to be a massive undertaking, but the risks are so large that we can't afford not to do it," Levin said.

THEN AND NOW: 8 tourist attractions that became popular in the 2010s

hanoi street train

These eight destinations and attractions have all seen a significant spike in visitors over the past decade for various reasons, from Instagram to "Game of Thrones."

Though tourism can be a positive thing for a city or country's economy, it can also bring upon other negative consequences that can lead an attraction to shut down for good.

Keep scrolling to see how much these popular tourist spots have changed over the past 10 years.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter opened in Orlando, Florida, in 2010.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, pictured in 2010, was first rumored in 2003 and officially announced in 2007. It opened its gates to the public in June 2010.

The park has now expanded into both Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios, with more rides, attractions, and a new neighborhood to explore.

The park, pictured in 2019, is constantly changing and updating, with a new ride, Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, opening this summer.

According Forbes, visits to Islands of Adventure have "increased by a staggering 64.5%" since the 2010 opening, with 9.8 million visitors in 2018.

Iceland has become one of the most popular tourist destinations over the past decade, and the Blue Lagoon is the most visited attraction in the country.

"Tourism in Iceland grew rapidly, with an average year-on-year growth in tourist arrivals of over 25% since 2013, peaking in 2016 with 38% growth," Inga Hlín Pálsdóttir, director at Visit Iceland, told USA TODAY.

The Blue Lagoon now attracts 4,000 visitors a day.

The number of tourists regularly exceeds the entire population of Iceland — and that number is growing. In 2016, 1.8 million people traveled to the island, whereas in 2018, 2.3 million people made the trek.

The number of people who visit the Blue Lagoon is an example of the effect of tourism on the country — everything gets crowded.

"Sex and the City 2" premiered in 2010, introducing Abu Dhabi and its various tourist attractions to millions of people.

Was "Sex and the City 2"particularly well-liked, or even necessary? Not exactly, but the movie was essentially a giant ad for Abu Dhabi tourism. The film made it seem like the most glamorous vacation spot in the world.

The Yas Hotel Abu Dhabi, pictured, was completed in 2009 and brought a more modern style of architecture to the city.

Skyscrapers are continually going up in Abu Dhabi as more and more tourists and industries flock to the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

In 2018, 10.27 million people visited Abu Dhabi

Singapore opened two massive resorts in 2010 to strengthen the country's tourism industry, including the Marina Bay Sands.

The Marina Bay Sands, pictured in 2010, opened its doors in April 2010 and immediately became Singapore's largest and most popular hotel. In its 57 stories, it contains the SkyPark (an observation deck), the world's largest infinity pool, movie theaters, high-end designer stores, a spa, and multiple restaurants and bars.

By 2015, tourism had more than doubled from 2004. The Marina Bay Sands was the most Instagrammed hotel in the world in 2017.

In 2018, 18.5 million people visited Singapore, and according to Instagram, the Marina Bay Sands was the most Instagrammed hotel in the world.

The Singapore Tourism Board credited the release of the 2018 romantic comedy "Crazy Rich Asians" for the spike in tourism. The Board said "organic search interest in Singapore rose by more than three times in the United States during the movie's release," and there was a 110% spike in searches on travel-planning site Orbitz.

Big Major Cay in the Bahamas, also known as Pig Beach, experienced a boom during the 2010s.

The pigs have been on the island for years, but before social media, it was more of a local secret, or something that you'd really have to research to figure out. Celebrity visits, "The Bachelor," and social media have all played a part in the surge of visitors to Pig Beach.

But now, tourism is having a deadly impact on the pigs.

It was determined that pigs were dying from sand ingestion, which happened because tourists regularly throw food onto the beach, according to National Geographic.

According to the US State Department, 5.5 million people visit the Bahamas annually.

Boracay, a small island in the Philippines, was named the 2012 Best Island in the World by Travel + Leisure because the beaches were so pristine.

Boracay had only made its debut on the list in 2011, before topping the list in 2012. At the time, Travel + Leisure wrote it had "still-under-the-radar status."

Not for long ...

In 2018, Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte called the island a "cesspool" and shut it down for six months so the government could clean up.

Boracay closed itself to visitors in April 2018, largely due to a viral video showing"sewage flowing directly into Boracay's blue waters." The video is what led to Duterte calling the island a "cesspool."

In 1990, 1 million people visited the Philippines. Compare that to the 6.6 million who visited in 2017 — and more than 2 million of those visitors headed to the tiny island of Boracay.

The island reopened in October 2018, but with significantly more infrastructure, and fewer tourists.

Dubrovnik, Croatia, was a moderately popular tourist destination a decade ago.

Croatia's only been a country since 1991, after it declared it was leaving Yugoslavia. In the early 2010s, people were visiting, but numbers have increased significantly.

When "Game of Thrones" used the city as a stand-in for King's Landing, tourism numbers rocketed. The city is in danger of losing its UNESCO World Heritage site status.

"Game of Thrones" premiered in 2011. By 2015, Dubrovnik was regularly hitting its 3 million visitors target. That year, it hit the milestone in October, 20 days earlier than 2014. And tourism has only increased since then.

In 2017, UNESCO warned Croatia that the Old City of Dubrovnik was in danger of losing its status as a World Heritage site due to the massive amount of tourists in relation to "the sustainable carrying capacity of the city."

Hanoi's "train street" has been around for over 100 years.

The railway was first built in the Vietnamese city in 1902 by French colonists. Over the years, cafes have cropped up alongside the tracks, but before social media it was more of a hidden gem than a tourist destination.

But the rise of Instagram made it impossible to keep the cafes open, and they were shut down in October 2019.

Hanoi's government ordered the cafes to close up shop by October 12, citing safety concerns. The railroad is still active, and trains do travel it.

The Guardian wrote that the area was considered a "rough part of town" until selfie-hungry tourists started flooding the area trying to get a perfect post for Instagram.

We drove a $44,000 Nissan Leaf Plus to figure out if this 2019 Car of the Year runner-up is ready to take on Tesla

Nissan

  • The 2019 Nissan Leaf SL Plus is the fanciest version of the vehicle that first appeared in 2010.
  • Although over 300,000 Leafs have been sold worldwide, the electric car has always been held back by its range.
  • The Leaf Plus, however, serves up 214 miles on a single charge and has a more powerful motor.
  • At $44,000, the Leaf SL Plus is a bit pricey, but you can opt for a cheaper trim level.
  • Overall, the Leaf SL Plus is a dandy EV; it's well worth a look if you're shopping for a new car.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Editor's note: Business Insider will name its 2019 Car of the Year on November 23. Each day this week, we're taking another look at the five vehicles that were runners-up selected from a pool of 16 finalists. The second vehicle is the 2019 Nissan Leaf SL Plus.

The Nissan Leaf was basically the first modern, mass-market, all-electric vehicle, beating the Tesla Model S to market by a few years.

When it launched, the Leaf had limited range and was sort of unimpressively designed, but there was a lot of buzz around EVs then. The Leaf was the cornerstone of a Nissan "Zero Emission" strategy.

Market reality hasn't quite lived up to expectations, but Nissan has continued to improve the Leaf. The second-generation arrived for the 2018 model year, with an updated design. For 2019, Nissan rolled out the Leaf Plus, a version of the EV that could achieve up to 226 miles on a single charge.

Generally, a baseline 200-mile number is magical; it eliminates much of the "range anxiety" that consumers suffer from because it adds a decent buffer and reduces the need to frequently recharge the Leaf.

I tested the Leaf Plus for a week in the New Jersey suburbs and even took a ride to Brooklyn. I concluded that the Leaf Plus was very good, and thus we have named it a 2019 Car of the Year runner-up.

Here's now my test went:

Good day, 2019 Nissan Leaf SL Plus! Looking sharp in "Deep Pearl Blue."

Pretty much the same Deep Pearl Blue as the Leaf that was a Business Insider Car of the Year finalist in 2018. That car had a single electric motor, producing 147 horsepower, a 40-kWh battery pack, and delivered 151 miles of range on a full charge.

The Leaf is the top-selling EV globally, which makes sense as the car has been around since 2010. Over 300,000 have been sold.

Our SL Plus trim level has a 62 kilowatt-hour battery. The larger pack adds roughly 70 miles of range compared to the standard Leaf's 151-mile battery.

The 2019 Leaf, like the second-generation 2018 car, is much sleeker than the original. However, we're talking about a practical hatchback here, so let's not get too excited. Aerodynamics play a role in increasing EV range, so while the hatch design favors utility, the Leaf's front end has been engineered for airflow: the car has a 0.28 drag coefficient

The goal when the Leaf was launched was for the Japanese automaker to embrace a "zero emission" future. It hasn't quite worked out that way, but the company is making progress, and the Leaf is still with us.

Hatchback silhouettes aren't typically associated with automotive aggression, and EVs tend to project a mostly virtuous vibe. But the Leaf's fascia is rather bold. The LED headlights are a standout feature.

Overall, the Leaf projects a fairly European identity. That perhaps has turned off some US customers, who have basically abandoned small vehicles in favor of large SUVs and pickups.

The Leaf's cargo area is an excellent 24 cubic feet, expandable to 30 with the rear seats dropped. The hatch's opening is a tad awkward, with a sort of oval shape.

Charging is unchanged from the Leaf we tested in 2018, at least as far as the ports go. There are two, one for 240V "Level 2" charging and one for fast DC charging. Our Leaf SL Plus had a 160 kWh electric motor, making a juicy 214 horsepower with 250 pound-feet of torque.

There's also an onboard charge cable for "trickle" top-offs using a regular wall outlet for 120V power. Using 240V, the Leaf Plus is back to 100% in 11.5 hours. Fast DC charging, however, can achieve 80% in 45 minutes.

The Leaf has regenerative braking. And when the e-Pedal feature is engaged, it's possible to drive the car using motor braking almost alone, putting power back into the battery.

We used the ChargePoint network and did fine with two rounds of 240V charging over the course of a week. It's also possible to install your own 240V ChargePoint unit at home; one can be purchased for about $500, with installation handled by a qualified electrician.

We also used the Nissan Connect iPhone app to monitor charging and to manage climate control and vehicle diagnostics.

The Leaf's "Light Gray" interior was pleasant.

It was  a bit shy of premium, but the seats were comfy, and there was a reasonable amount of space to stow small items.

The back seat was about average, space-wise, for the segment.

The Leaf has always received criticism for its "tweener" nature. It's not a luxury car, but it's also not barebones. I've always thought it hits a sweet-spot for customers who aren't wealthy but who have the means to invest in an EV.

The Leaf's eight-inch color infotainment display looks good, but we aren't the biggest fans of the system's layout. It is easy to use, and Bluetooth device-pairing is a snap. You also have available Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

So what's the verdict on this 2019 Car of the Year runner-up?

If you can afford the payments — which come in at about $670 a month, on a 72-month loan — you'll spend around $54 a month on electricity, according to Nissan and the US Department of Transportation and the EPA (the cost is based on 15,000 miles of annual driving). Gas could cost you more than twice as much, for a comparable petrol-burning machine.

The Leaf Plus is also still eligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit, as well as various state incentives.

AND you don't have to buy the top-spec SL trim, like our tester — you could opt for the $36,550 plain-old Plus and still get a 62-kilowatt-hour battery pack.

OK, you won't feel compelled to buy the Leaf Plus if your budget is more Nissan Versa Note, a $15,650 hatchback that runs on gas (but not much of it) and could be had for less than $250 a month. The 2020 Versa sedan starts even cheaper: less than $15,000.

Electric cars, of course, aren't cheap (although you can pick up a used Leaf from the previous generation for around $10,000). But if you have the means and are serious about making the transition from fossil fuels to EEE-lec-tricity for propulsion, the Leaf Plus's 226-miles range could flip your switch.

The 6.5-second 0-60 mph should also flip your switch. That's darn quick, for a car that outwardly resembles something you'd find parked on the streets of Paris and used mainly for baguette runs. My beef with the Leaf, compared to other EVs (Tesla's Model 3, the Chevy Bolt, and now a new generation of luxury vehicles, such as the Jaguar I-Pace) is that it felt solid yet sluggish. Against the Bolt, the shorter-range Leaf seemed to lack snap.

Not so anymore. The larger battery and more peppy motors have made the Leaf Plus feel downright sporty. My test car also included a suite of driver-assist and semi-self-driving features (Nissan's ProPilot, for example, which can handle steering assist), so the Leaf has become a rather complete package that, for $44,000 as tested, was genuinely packed with content.

So, the Big Question: Why aren't Leafs more popular? The answer is, to a degree, segmentation: Americans don't want small hatchbacks. Price is also an issue, as is charging infrastructure. And Leafs aren't exactly unpopular — Nissan has sold a very respectable number.

But the Plus-range trim does bring the mystery back into view. True, it can be a hassle to deal with "range anxiety" in sub-200-mile-range EVs. But the Leaf Plus provides a nice buffer, of around 50 miles. I figured that I'd charge a Leaf Plus, if I owned one, about once a week, maybe twice. With some planning, I could take it on a longer journey.

The Leaf Plus makes perfect sense for suburbanites who commute to big cities using public transportation, but who need a vehicle for around-town business and weekend duty. That's millions and millions and millions of people — an enticing addressable market. Yes, a lot of those suburbanites want a large SUV or minivan to haul around families. But they could get by with a Leaf. And besides, in this demographic, two cars in the driveway isn't uncommon.

This always happens when I test a capable, modern electric vehicle. I scratch my head. Oh well, it's better now than it was a decade ago. But I still don't get it.

In the meantime, if you need a new car, you owe it to yourself to check out the Leaf Plus. It's still among the best choices for EV buyers, even with a slew of new vehicles hitting the market. That's why it was a Car or the Year finalist in 2018 — and why it's advanced to runner-up status for 2019!

Google restored a World War II-era wooden airplane hangar and turned it into a huge new LA office — take a look inside (GOOG, GOOGL)

26. Google Spruce Goose

  • Last year, Google moved into the historic Spruce Goose airplane hangar in LA.
  • The Spruce Goose was the largest wood plane ever built, and flew only once, in 1947.
  • Google restored the hangar into a 450,000-square-foot office and event space, preserving the original construction and adding to the interior, creating an unusual mix of old and new.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Google combined its two LA offices into a historic airplane hangar last year, and the results are nothing short of stunning.

The hangar, which once held the famed Spruce Goose plane, as it was derisively called, has been out of use for years. The Spruce Goose was the largest wooden plane ever built, due to wartime shortages during World War II. It flew just once, for under a minute, in 1947. It was once owned by filmmaker and pilot Howard Hughes, who also helped design the plane.

Now, the hangar where the Spruce Goose was kept for over 30 years has a second life as Google's LA office. Google worked with sustainable architecture firm ZGF to create a design that feels new and classic all at once. Take a look:

SEE ALSO: This video gives a rare look inside Apple's $5 billion 'spaceship' headquarters

The hangar that was once home to the Spruce Goose had been mostly unoccupied until Google took over and renovated the space.

In 2018, Google completed a total redesign of the 750-foot-long building.

It was once used as a soundstage for "Titanic" and "Avatar."

Large windows along the sides, which were boarded up during the hangar's soundstage days, were re-exposed. They flood the space with light.

The building's spine was rebuilt with steel, then covered with the same refurbished wood panels.

The hangar is a historical landmark, so the Google renovation preserved the original look, but did add in four new floors.

Wood arches and siding were preserved and exposed in the interior of the space.

The office now has 450,000 square feet of usable space ...

... And 75-foot-tall arches.

The building has offices, conference rooms, and event spaces ...

.... Amenities including a fitness center, music room, and massage room ...

... Plus food service on each floor.

ZGF said in a statement that it designed the building so that residents can see the unique structure of the hangar from any point inside.

Contemporary and classic design meet and complement each other within the space.

Offices are set back from the main atrium near the spine of the building, but glass walls still give a sense of the space.

The building also has variety in how space is used. Some areas have double- or triple-floor height ...

... A juxtaposition that ensures that natural light reaches every area.

Skylights also bring in lots of light.

Offices and meeting spaces have a subtle theme that centers around flight, like Icarus — the hero of a Greek myth about a pair of wings — or Zephyr, a Greek god of wind. Other rooms have themes like confetti and kite.

A boardwalk twists along the perimeter of the building on an incline from the first to third floors.

Much of the furniture was custom-designed for the space ...

... And the designers chose matte finishes and neutral tones to complement the original wood ...

... Extra wood was even used to construct furniture, and the stairs carry the theme throughout as well.

Each area has also been designed acoustically, so that, despite all the open space, sounds from one area don't carry over into the next.

Custom murals throughout the space take up wall real estate and break up the uniform wood.

Google commissioned artists to create original works based on "the hangar's aviation history, Google's innovative ethos, and the multi-faceted spirit of Los Angeles," according to ZGF.

ZGF said that the space is designed to be a "mature and sophisticated environment," with "the engaging user experience" that Google is known for.

  • Unlike almost every other gifting occasion, White Elephant, Yankee Swap, and/or Nasty Christmas exchanges reward originality, humor, and risk-taking above all else.
  • Since you don't have hours to dive deep into the riches of the internet, I've collected 55 great White Elephant gifts under $50 for you.
  • Check out all of our 2019 holiday gift ideas here.

When it comes to gift-swapping games like White Elephant, Yankee Swap, or Nasty Christmas, the master gifters must first forget everything they know aboutholiday gifting.

Gone are the gifts of cashmere scarves, Belgian chocolates, and those porcelain baby angel figurines Aunt Sharon collects. In their place, Ron Swanson's Pyramid of Greatness, cookbooks punctuated by expletives, life-size cardboard cut-outs of your face, T-shirts with record players engulfed in flame thanks to the devil's music, and door stoppers with "HODOR" emblazoned upon them.

Gift swaps reward the niche, novel, and irreverent, with bonus points going to those who can check the boxes of funny and useful. So, below, we rounded up 55 gifts that are perfectly primed for this occasion, and, admittedly, perhaps no other.

The top 5 best gifts for White Elephant:

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip celebrate 72 years of marriage today. Here's where the couple — and all the other most prominent royals — live.

kensington palace 2x1

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle moved out of Kensington Palace earlier this year to set up a new home for baby Archie at Frogmore Cottage in Windsor Castle. Now, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester are also leaving their Kensington Palace apartment, too.

This means Prince William and Kate Middleton can expect new neighbors.

Kensington Palace, a royal residence since the 1600s, is easily the most bustling of the royal family's many grand homes — but not every royal lives there.

SEE ALSO: Princess Beatrice is engaged to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. Here's everything we know about the property tycoon and single dad descended from Italian aristocracy.

DON'T MISS: The Queen used to have a bar in Buckingham Palace but had to close it down after staff got too drunk

Kensington Palace is home to many members of the royal family.

Within its grounds are a host of separate properties, ranging from relatively humble cottages, to the grand 20-room apartment occupied by Prince William, Kate Middleton, and their young family.

As well as royal living quarters, which tend to be modestly decorated, it is also home to lavish state rooms used for grand occasions, like this one:

One of Kensington Palace's many grand interior rooms, which are occasionally opened to the public, is pictured above.

Harry and Meghan left Nottingham Cottage.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle lived in a two-bed cottage on the palace grounds before they got married on May 19, 2018, and came back two days after the ceremony to make it their marital home.

The cottage, nicknamed "Nott Cott" and often described as "snug," was Harry's home since 2013.

Meghan moved in just after their engagement was made public in November 2017. Harry proposed to Meghan when they were spending an evening together at Nottingham Cottage, surprising her while they were roasting a chicken.

After announcing their engagement, they gave an interview from the cottage, sitting on its sofa, which is one of the only times the public has seen inside.

They left Kensington Palace behind in early 2019 before they welcomed baby Archie. It's not known who (if anyone) has moved into Nott Cott since their departure.

The Duke of Gloucester and Duchess of Gloucester are now leaving Apartment 1.

The Duke of Gloucester, one of Queen Elizabeth II's cousins, and his wife, the Duchess of Gloucester, were the last to reside in Apartment 1. They have called the apartment home since 1972. The Sun had previously reported that the couple offered to vacate the property to make way for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, though this plan did not come to fruition in light of their move to Windsor.

Moving vans were spotted outside of Kensington Palace and are reportedly going to relocate the Duke and Duchess to the Old Stables, a smaller residence on Kensington Palace grounds. The Old Stables recently received a $493,000 renovation in preparation for the move.

Apartment 1 is a large complex of rooms in the main palace building, much like like William and Kate's home at 1A. The two used to be one enormous set of rooms until they were divided in the 1950s.

The complex has 21 rooms, slightly topping the size of William and Kate's, but few details are available other than its overall size.

A palace spokesperson told Hello! Magazine in June that the decision regarding who would move in to the residence had "not yet been finalized."

Here's a breakdown of who is left, and where they live in Kensington Palace.

Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis: Apartment 1A

William, Kate, and their children are not only the largest group of royals in Kensington Palace but the closest to the throne.

The family of five occupies Apartment 1A, a collection of 20 stately rooms with a commanding view of Hyde Park.

They moved to Kensington Palace full time in October 2013, not long after their first child, Prince George, was born. Princess Charlotte followed in 2015, and Prince Louis in April 2018.

The public rarely get to see inside, but photographers were allowed to take photos of a reception room when William and Kate hosted the Obamas in 2016.

We also saw another view (or maybe even another room) where Prince George played on a rocking horse before meeting the US president.

Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank: Ivy Cottage

The newest royals at Kensington Palace are Princess Eugenie, who is William's and Harry's cousin, and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, a London socialite.

According to The Sun, the couple moved into a cottage right next to Harry and Meghan's former abode at about the same time Kate was in the hospital delivering Prince Louis.

The couple announced their engagement in January, a few weeks after getting engaged while vacationing in Nicaragua.

They got married at Windsor Castle in the same chapel as Harry and Meghan on October 12, 2018, but the occasion attracted less publicity.

Princess Eugenie's sister, Princess Beatrice, recently got engaged to a property tycoon descended from Italian aristocracy, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. It is unclear where they will reside once they're married and where they live now (whether separately or together).

Prince and Princess Michael of Kent: Apartment 10

Prince Michael of Kent, another of the queen's cousins but from a more junior line, lives in the main palace building with his wife.

She is known as Princess Michael, in the old-fashioned tradition by which the wives of princes take their husband's name.

This same rule means that Kate can technically be referred to as Princess William of Cambridge, and Meghan as Princess Henry of Wales, but the names are not widely used.

Their apartment consists of five bedrooms and five receptions rooms. They used to have use of the property rent-free, but since 2008 they have been paying a reported£10,000 ($13,600) per month in rent.

The Duke and Duchess of Kent: Wren House

The Duke of Kent, Prince Michael's older brother, also lives within the Kensington Palace grounds with his wife, the Duchess.

Their home, Wren House, is named after the famous British architect Christopher Wren, who built St Paul's Cathedral and several properties for the royal household.

Few details about their home have ever been made public. It is physically between Ivy and Nottingham cottages and appears to be of a similar size.

But what about the queen and Prince Philip?

England's reigning monarch doesn't actually live at Kensington Palace, where many of the other prominent royals reside. Queen Elizabeth II lives at Buckingham Palace, a 775-room royal residence, with her husband, Prince Philip. The two just celebrated 72 years of marriage.

Buckingham Palace is where the Trooping the Colour Ceremony takes place each year.

The ceremony, to mark the "official birthday of the Sovereign" (not the Queen's actual birthday), is a major photo op for the royal family every year.

Buckingham Palace is about two miles away from Kensington Palace, across Hyde Park and Green Park.

So if Her Majesty ever wants to drop in on her cousins, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren, they aren't far away.

Charles, Prince of Wales, and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, don't live at either Kensington Palace or Buckingham Palace, but at nearby Clarence House.

Clarence House was built between 1825 and 1827 for Prince William Henry, the Duke of Clarence. Today, it serves as the official London residence of Prince Charles and Camilla. The Queen Mother (Elizabeth II's mother and Charles' grandmother) also lived at Clarence House, from the time Elizabeth II took the thrown until the Queen Mother's death in 2002.
