Trump army coffin

  • US troops and their commander-in-chief continued to make headlines throughout the year from a daring raid that killed ISIS's leader to a narco-sub seizure to an Army officer who testified in the Trump impeachment hearings.

US service members and their commander-in-chief continued to make headlines throughout the year.

From the cases of white nationalist sentiment within its ranks, to a daring nighttime raid in Syria, US troops have been on the frontlines of both domestic and foreign conflict.

Here are 18 powerful images that illustrate the biggest news in the US military in 2019:

First US female service member dies in combat against ISIS in Syria.

US Navy Senior Chief Shannon Kent, a 35-year-old native of New York, was killed in a suicide bomb attack in Syria on January 16, 2019. She was the first female US casualty of the year during Operation Inherent Resolve. Three other Americans were killed in the attack.

Kent deployed multiple times to the Middle East during her 15 years career. The military cryptologist was able to speak four languages, including Arabic. Despite being diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2016, she continued to serve in the Navy.

She is survived by her husband, former US Army Green Beret Joe Kent; and two children.

Thirty-four US service members were killed in Middle Eastern operations, as of Dec. 2

Trump becomes the first sitting US president to step into North Korea.

On June 30, President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un stepped across the military demarcation line together at the Demilitarized Zone of North and South Korea.

While the photograph may have appeared to signal a seismic shift in US-North Korean relations, Pyongyang would continue to provoke its neighbors by launching numerous missiles throughout the year.

Trump has dismissed the importance of North Korea's missile launches by describing them as merely "short-range missiles."

"We never made an agreement on that. I have no problem," Trump said in August. "We'll see what happens. But these are short-range missiles. They're very standard."

The lackluster results after the DMZ meeting followed another historical summit between the two leaders in Hanoi, Vietnam, earlier this year, leading some foreign policy experts to wonder whether the Trump administration has a strategy for the North Korean regime.

The border wall battle rages on.

Trump faced challenges in constructing his controversial wall along the US-Mexico border, despite shoring up construction funds after he declared a national emergency.

Trump continued to speak about a "crisis" at the border, which he claims is propelled by illegal immigration, drugs, and violent crime — all of which must be solved by constructing a physical barrier.

Following the record-high 35-day partial government shutdown earlier in the year, Trump accepted Congress' partial allocation of the $5.7 billion he initially requested for a steel barrier. He declared a national emergency on February 15, and secured the remaining funds for construction.

Trump faced criticism after the funds to pay for the barrier were siphoned from military training operations and projects that have yet to be paid for, including ones from bases that were still reeling from the aftermath of Hurricane Florence.

The United States Military Academy graduates its largest group of black female cadets.

The 2019 class of the United States Military Academy at West Point graduated a record-high 32 black female cadets.

"My hope when young black girls see these photos is that they understand that regardless of what life presents you, you have the ability and fortitude to be a force to be reckoned with," Tiffany Welch-Baker, one of the black cadets, said in May.

The premier US military academy also graduated the highest number of female Hispanic cadets this year, according to a spokesperson.

West Point admitted its first black cadet in 1870, and its first woman in 1976.

White nationalism cases continues to proliferate in the military.

High-profile cases of white nationalism continued to emerge in the US military.

In October, US Coast Guard Lt. Christopher Hasson pleaded guilty to stockpiling unregistered weapons and controlled substances; and allegedly created a hit-list of prominent Democrats, news anchors, and Supreme Court justices. Hasson also allegedly identified himself as a white nationalist and wrote a letter to a neo-Nazi leader in 2017.

In addition to several US service members being identified as part of white supremacist groups, images of Nazi propaganda composed by US troops were discovered on social media channels.

Lance Cpl. Mason E. Mead, an infantry assault Marine, was reportedly being kicked out the military with an "other than honorable" discharge after he admitted to "advocating supremacist ideology."

Iran is caught red-handed.

On June 13, the US military released videos of what it alleged to be an Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps' patrol boat removing an unexploded limpet mine from a tanker in the Gulf of Oman after an attack.

A limpet mine is an explosive charge that magnetically attaches itself to the hull of a ship. Iran used similar mines in the late-1980s against tankers during the so-called Tanker War.

Nearly a week after the incident, Iran shot down what it alleged to be an "intruding American spy drone."

The incidents heightened tensions between the US and Iran, which resulted in the deployment of around 1,000 troops to the Middle East.

"The recent Iranian attacks validate the reliable, credible intelligence we have received on hostile behavior by Iranian forces and their proxy groups that threaten United States personnel and interests across the region," then-Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan said in a statement in June.

Knock, knock.

A July video of a Coast Guardsman boarding a drug trafficking submarine in the Pacific Ocean went viral.

The small-but-operational submarine and its crew of five drug traffickers were about 1,000 miles from the US when it was stopped by the US Coast Guard.

In the video, a Coast Guardsman could be seen jumping onto the moving submarine, and knocking the hatch with a raised fist. The drug traffickers were apprehended without incident.

Once aboard, the Coast Guard discovered 17,000 pounds of cocaine, an estimated worth of $232 million.

'Arrest these Marines.'

Sixteen US Marines were detained while in formation in Camp Pendleton, San Diego, after being accused of being linked to a human smuggling ring investigation on July 25.

Roughly 40 investigators detained the Marines, who were called in front of the formation "to be recognized,"The San Diego Union-Tribune reported, citing court filings.

"NCIS, arrest these Marines," Sgt. Maj. Matthew Dorsey reportedly said.

Thirteen Marines were eventually charged for various offenses, including stealing grenades, distributing LSD, and conspiring or aiding the smuggling of undocumented immigrants, according to Marine Corps Times.

'Salute to America'

In celebration of the Fourth of July, Trump rolled out armored vehicles and fighter jets in the US capitol for his inaugural "Salute to America" parade.

The celebrations spurred some concern due to its cost and optics. According to the Interior Department, the National Parks Service, the Defense Department, and the city of Washington D.C., the event reportedly costed taxpayers $5.35 million.

Critics also claimed the event was an unnecessary display of military might and reminiscent of the parades held by authoritarian regimes.

Trump's policy pivots in Syria for the oil.

Trump's abrupt withdrawal of US troops deployed in Syria took many by surprise — before he turned the military around and deployed additional troops to the region.

Following a phone call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in October, Trump withdrew US troops away from Syria's border with Turkey. The withdrawal was widely viewed as one that would all but assure the deaths of Kurdish partners who led the fight against ISIS.

The presence of US troops at the border has been viewed as a deterrent to potential Turkish incursions. Turkey has long claimed the Kurdish People's Protection Units, or YPG, and the Kurdish-majority Syrian Democratic Forces are a threat with links to a Turkey-based terrorist group.

After Trump faced fierce backlash against the withdrawal from his Republican allies, he redeployed an additional contingent of US troops and armored vehicles to guard Syrian oil fields

"What I intend to do, perhaps, is make a deal with an ExxonMobil or one of our great companies to go in there and do it properly," Trump said on October 27, adding that he wanted to "spread out the wealth."

"The oil is so valuable for many reasons," Trump added.

Kurdish casualties mount amid the Turkish offensive.

Reports of numerous tragedies and extrajudicial killings emerged in the wake of the the US withdrawal of Syria and Turkey's offensive.

Unverified pictures and video footage of the bloodshed have emerged in the wake of the Turkish military campaign. At least a dozen Kurds, including a female politician, were killed in October, according to Foreign Policy. In addition to pressure from Turkey, the Kurds are under assault by the Free Syrian Army, a Turkish-backed militia that is killing civilians and freeing ISIS prisoners who were detained by the Kurds.

The move, prompted by the US's withdrawal, was widely condemned by current and former US military officials, who alleged the country was abandoning its allies.

"It didn't have to be this way," retired Army Gen. Joseph Votel, former head of US Central Command, said in an opinion column. "The US worked endlessly to placate our Turkish allies."

Mattis unchained.

For the first time since his resignation in December 2018, former defense Secretary James Mattis, candidly voiced his disagreements with the commander-in-chief.

Speaking at a charity dinner in New York, the retired four-star Marine Corps general delivered a speech that included several punchy jabs at Trump.

While Mattis mentioned certain disagreements with the White House in his resignation letter and subsequent TV interviews, his responses have always been muted prior to his keynote speech.

"I earned my spurs on the battlefield ... Donald Trump earned his spurs from the doctor," Mattis said in October, referring to Trump's medical deferment during the Vietnam War.

Mattis joins a number of former senior military officials who have voiced their opposition against Trump.

In a stunning opinion column titled "Our Republic Is Under Attack From the President," retired US Navy Adm. William McRaven, the Navy SEAL who oversaw the raid that took out al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden in 2011, alleged that Trump was gutting the country of the "nation's principles."

'It was him.'

In a daring two-hour nighttime raid on October 27, US Special Forces troops in helicopters descended into a compound containing ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Al-Baghdadi, who is believed to have been 48 years old, took over the terrorist organization in 2010 after two of his predecessors were killed. He was considered to be one of the US's most-wanted terrorists and fetched a $25 million bounty.

"Last night was a great night for the United States and for the world," Trump said in a press conference on October 27. "A brutal killer, one who has caused so much hardship and death, has violently been eliminated. He will never again harm another innocent man, woman, or child. He died like a dog. He died like a coward. The world is now a much safer place."

Four women and one man inside the compound were considered threats and killed after they "did not respond to commands in Arabic," US military officials said. No US soldiers were killed during the operation.

The operation was named after Kayla Mueller, an American humanitarian worker who was captured and killed by ISIS militants in Syria.

Conan, the very good military dog.

One of the outspoken heroes of the al-Baghdadi raid was a Belgian Malinois dog named "Conan."

The dog is named after comedian Conan O'Brien, according to a Newsweek report.

Although the details of the dog, much like his special forces handlers, remains a secret, Trump and military officials revealed some information about its role in the raid.

"He reached the end of the tunnel, as our dogs chased him down," Trump said, referring to Baghdadi, who detonated an explosive vest killing himself and two children.

Pentagon officials said the dog was injured after touching some exposed electrical wires while chasing Baghdadi. Conan has conducted over 50 combat missions.

Medals of Honor

In 2019, Trump awarded Medals of Honor, the country's highest military award, to three US soldiers.

The recipients included Staff. Sgt. Travis Atkins of the 10th Mountain Division; Staff Sgt. David Bellavia of the 1st Infantry Division; and Master Sgt. Matthew Williams of the 3rd Special Forces Group.

Bellavia became the first living Iraq War veteran to receive the Medal of Honor.

In October, 46 medal recipients met in Tampa, Florida, for a dinner — the largest such gathering since the 1970s, according to The Military Times.

Seven newly-elected Democratic lawmakers who served in the military and intelligence agencies go on the offensive.

Seven freshman Democrats who previously served in the US military or with intelligence agencies grew in notoriety and went on the offensive against Trump.

Rep. Gil Cisneros of California, a former naval officer; Rep. Jason Crow of Colorado, a former Army Ranger; Rep. Chrissy Houlahan of Pennsylvania, a former Air Force officer; Rep. Elaine Luria of Virginia, a former naval officer; Rep. Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey, a former Navy helicopter pilot; Rep. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan, a former CIA analyst; and Rep. Abigail Spanberger of Virginia, a former CIA officer, wrote an opinion column published in The Washington Post and described an anonymous whistleblower's allegations against Trump as "unprecedented."

The allegations, made by a whistleblower in the US intelligence community, centered around Trump's controversial communications with Ukraine and has since prompted the House's impeachment inquiry

"Our lives have been defined by national service," the Democrats said in the article. "We are not career politicians."

"We have devoted our lives to the service and security of our country, and throughout our careers, we have sworn oaths to defend the Constitution of the United States many times over," they added. "Now, we join as a unified group to uphold that oath as we enter uncharted waters and face unprecedented allegations against President Trump."

Some of the Democrats, such as Rep. Sherrill, have face significant blowback for their push to launch the impeachment inquiry in their home districts.

'Do not worry, I will be fine for telling the truth.'

On November 19, US Army Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, a National Security Council official, testified in a public hearing about what he heard during Trump's controversial phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Vindman, a top expert on Ukraine who also received a Purple Heart after sustaining injuries from a bomb blast in Iraq, was criticized by conservative media personalities and Republican lawmakers for his testimony while wearing his military uniform

At one point during the hearing, Vindman corrected Rep. Devin Nunes, the top Republican on  the House Intelligence Committee.

"Mr. Vindman, you testified in your deposition that you did not know the whistleblower, correct?" Nunes asked.

"Ranking Member, it's Lt. Col. Vindman, please," Vindman said.

Trump's presidential pardons.

On November 15, Trump overruled his top military officials and made the unprecedented decision to pardon or reinstate three US service members who were either convicted or were facing trial of war crimes.

"For more than two hundred years, presidents have used their authority to offer second chances to deserving individuals, including those in uniform who have served our country," the White House said in a statement. "These actions are in keeping with this long history."

Trump signed an executive order to grant clemency to US Army 1st Lt. Clint Lorance, who was convicted of ordering soldiers to engage three unarmed Afghan men on a motorcycle, killing two of them in July 2012. Lorance served six years of his 19-year sentence.

Trump also signed an executive order to grant clemency to US Army Maj. Mathew Golsteyn, whose trial has yet to begin. Golsteyn stands accused of killing an unarmed Afghan man in 2010, and later disposing the body in a trash pit.

US Navy Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Edward Gallagher, a Navy SEAL who was demoted after a military trial found him guilty of posing in a picture with the corpse of an ISIS militant, had his rank reinstated to chief petty officer by Trump. Gallagher was accused of pre-mediated and attempted murder in the stabbing of an ISIS fighter and an alleged shooting of two people in Iraq in 2017. Gallagher was acquitted on both counts, but was found guilty in the lesser charge of posing with a corpse in a photograph.

The executive decision eventually resulted in the resignation of Navy Secretary Richard Spencer, who claimed Trump "has very little understanding of what it means to be in the military."

"Americans need to know that 99.9% of our uniformed members always have, always are, and always will make the right decision," Spencer said in an opinion column published in The Washington Post. "Our allies need to know that we remain a force for good, and to please bear with us as we move through this moment in time."

The $157,000 Polestar 1 is a spectacular insight into what Volvo's new brand can achieve. It's also the best car China has ever built

Polestar 1

Volvo's revival under Chinese ownership has been impressive.

Geely, the Swedish automaker's parent company bought it from Ford in 2009, just as the financial crisis was starting to bite.

We've already seen a new spate of Volvo SUVs and made-in-China sedans — plus a brand-new manufacturing plant in South Carolina. But most intriguing was the establishment in 2017 of the Polestar brand as a stand-alone manufacturer, tasked with carrying the electric-vehicle banner for the Sino-Swedish nameplate.

After a bit of a wait, I finally got a chance to grab some seat time in the first official Polestar product, the aptly named Polestar 1.

Polestar 1 is a bridge to the forthcoming, all-electric Polestar 2. For now, we'll have to subsist on a Polestar diet of a turbocharged-and-supercharged gas engine mated to a pair of electric motors driving the rear wheels.

It's a potent combination, and I was prepared to be impressed. I just wasn't prepared for how impressed:

FOLLOW US: On Facebook for more car and transportation content!

The Polestar 1 I sampled for a few hours, zipping around the New Jersey highways and byways west of New York City, wore a dashing white paint job offset by black highlights and flickers of chrome.

The Polestar 1 is a performance car and it looks it. Volvo coupés have been few and far between. The last two-door in the lineup was the C30 hatchback.

The clear antecedent for the Polestar 1 is the Volvo P1800, a smashing sports car that arrived in the early 1960s and gained fame when driven by Roger Moore in "The Saint."

Polestar 1 is more Swedish than Italian, however (the P1800 enjoyed an Italian design). Its stance and attitude are also less sprezzatura than "Skoal!"

That said, the Polestar lineup will come from a new factory in China.

The Volvo fascia is an acquired taste. But once you acquire it, the taste is addictive. It makes an especially memorable first impression on the Polestar one.

The Thor's hammer headlights, a Volvo signature, have been carried over.

The Polestar badge is cool and EXTREMELY subdued. Polestar was Volvo's performance brand, but in 2017 it was spun off to form a new electrified nameplate.

The grille is an intricate marriage of black and chrome.

The Polestar 1 is ostensibly a grand-touring car, or a 2+2, but unlike GT cars of the past, it's relatively modest hood length indicated an equally modest engine. The powerplant is a mere 2.0-liters in displacement.

The wheels on my tester were gorgeous, and the yellow brake calipers were a cool touch. The Polestar 1, being a hybrid, utilized regenerative braking to reclaim power.

This sticker was the most Scandinavian element. But it's also a tip to how much lightweight carbon-fiber the Polestar 1 is made of. A good thing as even a medium-size electric battery takes the weight up above 5,000 pounds.

The Polestar 1 is a fastback coupé, but not a hatch.

The rear is a study in minimalism. There's a small spoiler that can be deployed at the driver's discretion.

Let's take a look under the hood.

There's a lot going on here. The 2.0-liter inline four is turbocharged and supercharged, cranking out 326 horsepower before a pair of battery packs (34 kilowatt hours total) and two electric motors take that to 619 horsepower, with everything piped to a hybrid all-wheel-drive system through an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Top speed is 155 mph and the 0-60 mph run happens in 4.2 seconds.

The trunk isn't exactly huge, but for EV nuts, it has a groovy feature.

It showcases the battery-electric connections, behind a clear panel. They have to be bright orange so that emergency crews can identify them.

Definitely one of the neatest design touches I've seen in an electrified vehicle.

A charging cable is stowed in an easy access case.

The Polestar 1 can fully recharge on DC fast charging in less than an hour, the company said. On slower level 1 or level 2 charging, the 70 miles of all-electric range is slower to restore, but owners using 240-volt power should be able to fully re-juice overnight.

The charge port is located aft, left rear.

The Polestar 1's interior is clean and elegant. Not sure how I feel about the bright orange shoulder belt, but it is what it is. The seats are mad comfy, yet supportive when necessary, and covered in Nappa leather.

Yep, it's a 2+2, and plus-two provides adequate legroom for ... Baby Yoda?

The multifunction steering wheel, instrument cluster, and other interior details are borrowed from Volvo.

That's real carbon fiber on the dash.

The Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system sounds magnificent.

For the most part, the Polestar 1's interior is devoid of bling. Except in the center console.

The toggle shifter is crystal.

The infotainment system is based on Volvo's innovative and oft-overlooked Senus setup.

I didn't fully evaluate it on my first drive, but I've used it extensively in Volvos and I have nothing but praise. It used a tablet touchscreen layout and requires some swiping to operate, but it's quite good once you pass the learning curve.

The Polestar 1 has five driving modes, ranging from all-electric to all-performance.

The roof is essentially all sunroof.

This makes for a wonderful experience in the cabin.

The Polestar 1 is stupendous. Not only is it something of a technological marvel, it looks fantastic and drives ever better.

So what's the complete first-drive verdict?

Awesome, awesome, and more awesome!

I'll do a proper review of the Polestar 1 next year, when I can sample the car for a week. But in a few hours, I definitely formed a favorable impression.

Maybe "favorable" isn't a strong enough word. I've driven a few made-in-China vehicles and have found them to be competitive with products from Japan, South Korea, the US, and Germany.

But Polestar 1 is something else entirely.

What we have here is a ferociously good grand-touring car that reminded me of the Lexus LC500h and the BMW i8. Of course, the LC 500h, while wonderful, is completely outclassed by the Polestar 1 on power: 354 hp vs 619 hp (the LC500 with a big V8 is a different story — but it still manages just 417 hp).

For the record, 619hp is supercar territory. The Polestar runs with the Corvette Z06, the Ferrari F8 Tributo, the Lamborghini Huracán, the McLaren 650S, the Porsche 911 Turbo S, and the Ford Mustang Shelby GT 350R.

For what it's worth, the mega GTs of the world — the Mercedes AMG GT and Aston Martin DB11 — also have something to think about.

Yes, this comes at a supercar price. The Polestar 1, at $156,500, is Audi R8-esque on the sticker (as well as on the spec sheet).

The Polestar 1 platform, to simplify, is a front-wheel-drive, gas-powered machine that's not overly stunning on paper; add the batteries and the dual-electric motors to produce rear-wheel-drive and AWD in concert and you get provocative bliss. In all-electric Pure mode, the Polestar 1 is quiet, quick, and torque-y, doing a passable impression of a Tesla Model S. Switch to fun mode, however, and you get the bold petrol-fueled dynamics mated to electric boost.

In summary, the driving is thrilling, engaging, precise, never less than joyful and at times rapturous. I went into the Polestar 1 with a blank slate and left with a ledger filled with "OOHS!", "AHHS!", "ZOWIES!", "BIFFS!", and "POWS!" I half-expected Adam West to show up and dance the Batusi.

The handling rides a continuum between docile and posh in hybrid mode to downright track-worthy in power mode. I felt confident to throw the car around a bit — and I had to be ever mindful of how fast the Polestar 1 is, as it rocketed to the legal speed limit without a single bead of sweat forming on its chic Scandinavian brow.

The Volvo-Geely deal has long been one of the most interesting in the car business. It's already created a lineup of first-class SUVs and has elevated Volvo from mid-luxury to a sort of thinking person's alternative to BMW and Mercedes.

With Polestar 1, that deal has become A LOT more interesting. This is easily the coolest set of wheels Volvo has produced in decades. And it's the best car China has ever built.

5 biggest winners and losers in college basketball this week

  • The fourth week of the 2019-2020 basketball season has come and gone, and the AP Top 25 Poll looks drastically different from how it looked last week.
  • The Duke Blue Devils fell out of the top of the poll after suffering a brutal upset to the unranked Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks at Cameron Indoor Stadium Tuesday.
  • The Louisville Cardinals bumped up to the No. 1 spot in the rankings, while the Kansas Jayhawks, Maryland Terrapins, Michigan Wolverines, and Virginia Cavaliers round out the top five.
  • The ACC leads all conferences with five teams in the AP Top 25 Poll, while the Big Ten and Pac-12 follow close behind with four apiece in the rankings.
  • Here are the five biggest winners and losers of Week 5 of the college basketball season.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Winners

▲ No. 3 Maryland Terrapins — Up 2 spots in the AP Top 25 Poll

Despite suffering a bit of a scare against the unranked Harvard Crimson during the second round of the Orlando Invitational Tournament on Friday, the Maryland Terrapins went on to sweep the field and remain undefeated on the season. Their 84-63 win over the Marquette Golden Eagles in the championship was particularly impressive, especially considering Maryland held Marquette sharpshooter Markus Howard — who had dropped a whopping 51 points on the USC Trojans two days prior — to just six points on the afternoon. Now No. 3 Maryland will face two unranked teams in the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Illinois Fighting Illini this week and, barring a disaster, should remain in the top five for the foreseeable future.

▲ No. 4 Michigan Wolverines — Enter the AP Top 25 Poll

Aside from the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks squad that toppled the top-ranked Duke Blue Devils at Cameron Indoor Stadium Tuesday night, no team is having a better week than the Michigan Wolverines. After traveling to the Bahamas unranked and under the radar, Juwan Howard's squad took down the Iowa State Cyclones, the then-No. 6 North Carolina Tar Heels, and then-No. 8 Gonzaga Bulldogs in rapid succession to win the Battle 4 Atlantis and catapult to the No. 4 spot in the Week 5 AP Poll. The Wolverines won't have much time to celebrate, though, as they have a date with the newly top-ranked Louisville Cardinals at the KFC Yum! Center Tuesday evening.

▲ No. 17 Florida State Seminoles — Enter the AP Top 25 Poll

Florida State has been on the cusp of entering the rankings for a few weeks, and the tumult of Week 4 was enough for the Seminoles to finally break through. That, and Leonard Hamilton's squad's three-point upset of the then-No. 17 Tennessee Volunteers on Friday. That noteworthy victory came on the back of Florida State's 57-point win against the Chicago State Cougars Monday. It preceeded its three-point overtime victory against the Purdue Boilermakers to win the Emerald Coast Classic Saturday night. The Seminoles will face two unranked Power-5 opponents in the Indiana Hoosiers and Clemson Tigers this week and likely find themselves firmly planted in the top 25.

▲ No. 19 Dayton Flyers — Enter the AP Top 25 Poll

The Dayton Flyers, like Michigan, entered their Feast Week tournament unranked and underrated. They went on to topple top-ranked freshman Anthony Edwards and the Georgia Bulldogs before dealing the Virginia Tech Hokies a damning 27-point loss. Dayton went on to lose a narrow decision to the Kansas Jayhawks in the Maui Invitational Tournament championships. Now the Flyers are flying high (sorry) in the top 20 with contests against the Houston Baptist Huskies and Saint Mary's Gaels — who just upset the Utah State Aggies — coming up this week.

▲ No. 14 Auburn Tigers — Up 4 spots in the AP Top 25 Poll

Bruce Pearl's Auburn Tigers enjoyed one of the bigger leaps of the week after taking down two unranked squads — the Colgate Raiders and New Mexico Lobos — by an average of 27 points. Auburn remains undefeated on the season and, given that the Tigers only face the unranked Furman Paladins this week, will likely stay amongst the top 15 heading deeper into December.

Losers

▼ No. 10 Duke Blue Devils — Down 9 spots in the AP Top 25 Poll

Less than a month after the then No. 1-ranked Kentucky Wildcats suffered a brutal loss to the Evansville Purple Aces at Rupp Arena, the Duke Blue Devils said: "hold my beer."Mike Krzyzewski's top-ranked squad lost to the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks in overtime at Cameron Indoor Stadium Tuesday night, shattering its record 150-game home winning streak against nonconference opponents and bringing an end to its perfect record on the season. Duke bounced back to beat the Winthrop Eagles by 13 on Friday, but the now-No. 10 Blue Devils will face a stiff test in the No. 11 Michigan State Spartans on Tuesday night.

▼ No. 25 Utah State Aggies — Down 10 spots in the AP Top 25 Poll

Even considering Duke's massive loss, the Utah State Aggies suffered the biggest slide of the week in the AP Top 25 Poll. The Aggies traveled to California to take on the Saint Mary's Gaels on Friday and left with their perfect record tarnished. Now, Utah State is teetering on the back edge of the rankings and does not face a ranked opponent again until 2020.

▼ No. 11 Michigan State Spartans — Down 8 spots in the AP Top 25 Poll

Even though the Michigan State Spartans took down the Georgia Bulldogs and UCLA Bruins by eight and 13 points, respectively, this week, a five-point loss to the Virginia Tech Hokies was enough to knock Tom Izzo's squad back eight spots in this week's AP Poll. Michigan State will now face a tough test at home against a similarly ailing Duke Blue Devil squad that slid back nine spots since last week.

▼ No. 13 Oregon Ducks — Down 2 spots in the AP Top 25 Poll

The Oregon Ducks got off to a solid start this week after taking down the then-No. 13 Seton Hall Pirates during the opening round of the Maui Invitational Tournament, but things quickly went south from there. Oregon fell to the then-No. 8 Gonzaga Bulldogs by one point on Thursday before losing by four to the then-No. 6 North Carolina Tar Heels the following day. Now, the Ducks will host the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors Saturday before traveling to Michigan to take on the No. 4 Wolverines one week later.

▼ Texas Tech Red Raiders — Dropped out of the AP Top 25 Poll

Back-to-back losses to unranked teams — the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Creighton Blue Jays — was enough to knock the Texas Tech Red Raiders out of the rankings this week. A matchup with the unranked but undefeated DePaul Blue Demons will be an interesting test for the Red Raiders before they gear up to face the No. 1 team in the nation — the Louisville Cardinals — at Madison Square Garden the following week.

The life of Savannah Guthrie: How a local news anchor quit journalism only to become one of the biggest morning show stars on Earth

Savannah Guthrie is seen amongst crew and fans whilst hosting NBC's

  • Savannah Guthrie has been a main co-anchor on the "Today" show since 2012.
  • Unsure about what to do with her life, she took her mother's suggestion to study journalism. It stuck. After graduating, she started out as a television host on local news channels and worked her way up.
  • Although she knew early on that she wanted to be on television, she took a detour and went to law school and had a short-lived legal career before taking the biggest leap of her life — into TV news.
  • Visit BusinessInsider.com for more stories.

Savannah Guthrie always wanted to be on television.

After studying journalism, she started out as an anchor on a local news channel. Ten days later, the newsroom closed down.

But she persevered, found other jobs, and worked her way up.

Later, she took a detour and worked for a few years as a white-collar criminal lawyer before she returned full-time to the news. She called it"one of the biggest, craziest jumps I ever made."

Guthrie has steadily ascended since. In 2012, she became the new co-host on the "Today" show.

In a commencement speech at George Washington University in May 2019, she said, "My path is not how anyone would tell anybody to get anywhere. It's like someone giving you directions from right here to New York City by telling you to start heading toward Miami."

Here's a look at Guthrie's life, in photos.

Savannah Clark Guthrie was born on December 27, 1971, in Melbourne, Australia.

When she was two years old, her family moved to Tuscon, Arizona, which is where she grew up.

Refinery29 called her "an unlikely role model for the laid-back dreamers."

"I wasn't much of a go-getter in my younger years," Guthrie told Refinery 29. "In high school, I was kind of a slacker."

She went to Amphitheater High School and said she never got invited to prom.

Growing up, Guthrie regularly attended church.

Her family spent all of Sunday at the local Baptist Church — for Sunday school, morning service, choir practice, and night service.

"Faith was so woven into our daily lives, we liked to say that God was the sixth member of the Guthrie family," she wrote in a blog post.

Her parents wanted their children to focus on who they were and to develop their character.

This was more important than physical appearances, or sports.

"I was never any good at sports,"Guthrie told Refinery 29.

When Guthrie was 16, her father, an engineer, died from a fatal heart attack while he was in Mexico for work. Nancy, her mother, stepped up and was the "rock" who kept the family together.

Until then Nancy had raised the family full time. But after her husband's death, she went back to work. She landed a job in public relations at the University of Arizona, which meant Savannah and her sister Annie could go to college tuition-free.

As for her father's death, Guthrie said it had made her more sensitive, gentler, and kinder.

"Of course it was terrible, and I think about him every day — but there's something about a dramatic event like that that makes you a bit more tender, a bit softer," she told Elle.

It was Nancy who suggested Guthrie study journalism.

Guthrie followed her mother's advice and earned a journalism degree from the University of Arizona, graduating cum laude in 1993.

"It was only in college when I started taking journalism classes that the fire was lit, and I really wanted to accomplish things. Before that, I was happy to hang out with my friends and listen to grunge music and wear my chunky heels," she told Refinery 29.

While studying, she was published in the Tombstone Epitaph, a community newspaper, and "Arizona Illustrated." She also interned with Arizona Gov. Fife Symington and Sen. Dennis DeConcini.

After graduating, Guthrie got her first break as a reporter in a local newsroom of four, in Butte, Montana. The station closed down ten days later.

The closure threw Guthrie's career trajectory out the window. But it was the beginning of Guthrie's journey along the "long road" of TV's minor leagues, as The Hollywood Reporter put it.

Less than two weeks after leaving, Guthrie returned to her home town.

She despaired a little, found her way to the bottom of a few Ben and Jerries tubs.

Then, she went back to the job market. For her, the dream was always television.

After a few weeks, she was hired as a reporter and anchor for KMIZ-TV in Columbia, Missouri. It paid off.

For her work, she was awarded an "Excellence in Legal Journalism Award," from the Missouri Bar.

In 1995, she moved back to Tucson. For the next four years, she worked as a reporter and anchor for KVOA-TV focusing on law and politics.

KVOA reporter Lupita Murillo told Tucson.com it was a joy and pleasure working with Guthrie. "We would always trade off stories, if I had a court story and she had something to do with crime, we'd switch. She was great even back then."

In 2000, as she was entering her late twenties, she moved to Washington DC.

According to NPR, she wanted bigger challenges than being a local TV reporter, so she enrolled in law school at Georgetown University.

Guthrie had been inspired by the coverage of the Simpson and Menendez brothers trials on Court TV. But it was a stressful time for Guthrie.

"Each morning in D.C., I'd wake up and read the Bible. In a little notebook, I started writing down verses that particularly spoke to me,"she wrote in a blog post. "On nights that I worried about a tough exam or the future that felt so uncertain, I'd turn to those verses to help me sleep, or calm my anxious heart."

At the same time, she continued working as a freelance reporter for WRC-TV.

Guthrie reported on several big stories, including the September 11 terrorist attacks and the 2001 anthrax mailings.

In 2002, she graduated with a law degree, magna cum laude.

She'd clearly been working hard. She won the International Academy of Trial Lawyers' Student Advocacy award for her work with domestic violence victims. She also topped the Arizona Bar Exam, beating 633 others.

For the next two years, she worked as a lawyer for Akin Gump Strauss Hauer, on white-collar criminal defense litigation. She continued reporting on the side, joining Court TV in 2002.

Although this would be the extent of her law career, she said the legal training helped her journalism.

Stemming from her time as a lawyer, her goal in interviews is to always try to think of a question interviewees would rather not be asked, just to see what they would say.

In a graduation speech she made to George Washington University, she said leaving the law was "one of the biggest, craziest jumps" she ever made.

"It wasn't a cliff; it was the federal courthouse here in Washington, DC,"she said in a commencement speech.

Months before she was due to start as a law clerk for a federal judge, she had an epiphany.

"It wasn't my dream. What I really wanted was to go back to my roots in journalism. I still had that nagging hope that one day I could really make it in television news," she said.

Guthrie went and spoke to the judge. He asked why she didn't come work for him for a year since it would help her career, especially since she didn't have a job lined up.

"And that's when I looked at him and told him: 'I know you're right. What you say makes perfect sense," she said. "But I also know myself, and if I don't do this, right this minute, I will never have the guts again."

From 2004 to 2006, she was Court TV's legal affairs correspondent.

She covered cases like Zacarias Moussaoui trial, the Boston clergy sex abuse scandal, and the Scooter Libby case.

While covering the Michael Jackson trial in 2005, Guthrie met her first husband, former BBC journalist Mark Orchard. They married in December 2005 but divorced in 2009.

"I was doing the best I could in my personal life, and my professional life was going better," she told The Hollywood Reporter. "So you know, you just keep doing the thing that works."

In 2007, she became an NBC News legal correspondent, where she appeared on "Today" and "NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams."

According to Jacqueline Sharkey, the former director of Arizona University's School of Journalism, Guthrie's law degree was invaluable for covering events like Supreme Court decisions, and health-care initiatives.

Guthrie's big break came when she was sent out to Wasilla, Alaska, to cover Sarah Palin.

According to Adweek, Palin refused interviews with a lot of media outlets, but she had a one-on-one with Guthrie, about parents with special needs children.

Her success with Palin led to her becoming NBC's White House correspondent in December 2008.

She covered the White House until June 2011 and was part of the NBC team that won an Emmy for their coverage of election night.

As for actually liking the job, Guthrie told The Hollywood Reporter, "There's just so much news and information around the White House and Washington that you never can feel that you know it all. I always felt like I was cramming for exams. I loved it and I hated it at the same time."

She also hosted NBC's Daily Rundown from January 2010 to June 2011. According to The Nation, Guthrie was positioned to the side of Chuck Todd, forcing her to lean in.

But that didn't stop her from being a sharp interviewer, and holding her "subjects' feet to the fire."

During this stint, she worked closely with Todd.

They worked 12 hour days together, in an office described by Todd as a "15-by-8 cell," and "a horror" by Guthrie. They're still friends though, and Todd told The Hollywood Reporter in grim journalistic fashion, "We talk each other off the ledge."

It was while she was covering the White House that she met Democratic political consultant Michael Feldman, a former aide to Al Gore, at his 40th birthday party.

"I met a man named Mike Feldman at a party, a political consultant who made me laugh. We fell in love," she wrote in a blog post

Guthrie's work, and her on-air personality, was noticed by the higher-ups at NBC.

Months before "Today" co-host Anne Curry made a messy departure, Guthrie was being looked at as a potential new host. An unnamed source told the New York Magazine that, unlike Curry's intense reporting style, Guthrie had "that girl-next-door quality."

When Curry left, "Today" lost 500,000 viewers, $40 million in advertising, and "Good Morning America" took its coveted first place in the rating's race. Guthrie was also cast as "the other woman" who had pushed Curry out, according to New York Magazine.

In 2012, she became an official "Today" show cohost.

On her first day, the new role wasn't mentioned at all on air. She simply sat down beside Matt Lauer. It was only hours after the show that NBC put out a press release.

And while Guthrie was taking the reins from Ann Curry when "Today" was in bad shape, she had "made it" in television news. Her dream had come true.

Even if it was by no means a perfect first day. "I think that was a hard day for everyone who cares about this show,"Guthrie told New York Magazine. "All of us … feel connected to what happened … and feel it really personally."

Things were coming together for Guthrie.

In 2013, Feldman proposed to her while they were on holiday in Turks and Caicos, and in 2014, they got married in Tucson, Arizona. At the wedding, they announced she was four months pregnant with their first child.

Each of the 80 guests received a handwritten personalized note, each with a monogrammed luggage tag, which was a joke about all the flights both Guthrie and Feldman have to take for their careers.

They now have two kids, Vale and Charley. And even though she's interviewed the president and worked as a co-anchor on a national network, nothing prepared Guthrie for being a mother.

"All the new-mother books and websites and mommy blogs in the world couldn't ease the helplessness I felt whenever Vale's blue eyes filled with tears," she wrote in Guideposts.

As a co-anchor of "Today," Guthrie wakes up between 3 and 4 a.m., Monday to Friday.

She's at her office by 5.30 a.m. The early hours are not just to get to work though. She prepares for the show while drinking coffee and having her makeup done. And according to Refinery 29's Donna Freydkin, "she never yawns."

Guthrie likes the early mornings because it means she gets more time with her kids. While it's demanding and intense, she is home by midday.

"As a working mom, that is a dream come true," she said.

The mornings also fly by, with barely enough time for a second coffee, as she and her co-hosts work inside the studio, go outside to greet fans, race through different segments, and then return inside again.

But Guthrie is also aware of the downside of being in the public eye.

She told the Hollywood Reporter that the criticism she receives is often sexist.

"Everybody gets 'You're biased,'" she said. "But you may also get 'Why do you roll your eyes and make that face? Why does your voice sound so shrill?'"

"Honestly, I'm interested in fair criticism. I'm not perfect. I try really hard to stay neutral. But often that's not what you're finding on social media. You're finding people who are very opinionated and detect bias in anyone who does not share that opinion," she continued.

Despite the social media criticisms, she's gotten support from NBC executives.

In 2016, as ratings for "Today" were on the rise, NBC News and MSNBC chairman Andrew Lack had much praise for Guthrie.

"One of the things I really do love about Savannah is she's game,"he told Adweek. "She's up for the question, and damn it, give me an answer. I admire that about her. She's got a very good bullshit barometer."

By the end of 2016, "Today" was winning the ratings race.

It was once more the most-watched morning show for 25 to 54 year-olds, as well as No. 1 for 18 to 49 year-olds.

What made Guthrie valuable for "Today" was her ability to go from playing piano with John Legend...

According to New York Daily News, she could swing easily between the serious and the silly

...to interviewing Speaker Nancy Pelosi at the US Capitol.

In that regard, she was similar to her predecessors Katie Couric and Meredith Vieira

Guthrie and Lauer's strong chemistry was also important in their ratings revival.

It didn't seem to be an act, either. While on maternity leave in 2017, Guthrie made a surprise reappearance to celebrate Lauer's 20th anniversary on "Today."

On that episode, she said, "I just want to say, we adore you. One of the things that is so wonderful about you is that from the second I walked in here, one of the things I noticed is that Matt knows every single person's first name and last name. He knows the name of their dog. He knows how their mother is doing."

But NBC clearly believed Guthrie's presence was vital.

In 2017, NBC reportedly pulled her back in four days early from maternity leave because ratings had fallen in her absence.

In 2017, Guthrie published a children's book called "Princesses Wear Pants" she wrote with Allison Oppenheim, who is married to NBC head Noah Oppenheim.

They wrote it because they wanted their children to know they could be "sparkly, but sparkle inside." It was a New York Times bestseller.

In November 2017, she announced Lauer had been fired after NBC news received a complaint about inappropriate sexual behavior.

She said, "For the moment, all we can say is that we are heartbroken. I'm heartbroken for Matt — he is my dear, dear friend and my partner. And he is beloved by many, many people here, and I'm heartbroken for the brave colleague who came forward to tell her story."

In 2019, she responded to allegations made by Brooke Nevils against her former co-host Matt Lauer in Ronan Farrow's book "Catch and Kill." She said she was "shocked and appalled."

"I know it wasn't easy for our colleague Brooke to come forward then, it's not easy now, and we support her and any women who have come forward with claims,"she said. "It's just very painful for all of us at NBC and who are at the Today show. It's very, very, very difficult."

In June 2019, she was one of the five NBC moderators for the first Democratic presidential primary debate.

Slate praised her for being efficient and clear, and for pushing candidates to clarify and expand their positions rather than revert back to prepared lines.

In November 2019, Guthrie's 2-year-old son Charlie threw a sharp toy train at her and almost blinded her in one eye.

After a few days off, she called in to "Today" and informed viewers that Charlie "threw a toy train right at my eye and tore my retina." After losing sight in the damaged eye for 24 hours, doctors warned her it was serious and told her to take it easy.

But by December, her eye was on the mend. She had at least five laser surgeries to reattach her retina, which meant she didn't have to have undergo retinal surgery.

She also made sure that Charlie didn't know how severe the injury was.

"He's 2, so he doesn't really know what he did, and of course I wouldn't want to make him feel bad about it,'' she said.

As for what's next, Guthrie said, despite her success, she's more motivated by her fear of failure than a desire to succeed.

So, for now, Guthrie will continue hosting "Today" with Hoda Kotb and making sure those fears push her forward.

These are the key defenders of Harvey Weinstein and what they have to say for themselves now

  • In 2017, investigations uncovered numerous allegations of sexual assault against legendary producer Harvey Weinstein.
  • Since then, the details of Weinstein's powerful social and legal network have been revealed by the same reporters.
  • Some Hollywood heavyweights sounded off on the case, and key figures who were closest to Weinstein in the fallout of the investigations fought hard to push back on the reports.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

In 2017, the New York Times and The New Yorker published investigations into repeated settlements paid out by legendary producer Harvey Weinstein over the course of several years in response to sexual misconduct allegations.

Since then, more of Weinstein's accusers have come forward and reporters have mapped out an extensive network of women who have said they were harassed or assaulted by him.

In the midst of the allegations, some top lawyers and celebrities were vocal about not rushing to judgment in Weinstein's case, with some even coming to his defense.

In the time since, some have walked back and clarified their comments in the wake of the case that shook Hollywood and set off the #MeToo movement as books, "She Said" and "Catch and Kill," by the reporters who broke the Weinstein story, detailed the extensive networks that worked to defend Weinstein and silence his accusers.

These are the people that defended Harvey Weinstein, and what they have to say on the matter now.

Attorney Lisa Bloom

Bloom was arguably the most surprising member of Weinstein's defense, and triggered massive blowback when she joined his team as a legal adviser.

She resigned two days after the Times released its investigation and later said she regrets joining the defense, saying she joined the team to "educate him about sexual harassment laws, about the power imbalance, about what is appropriate and not appropriate in the workplace," but was later  "mortified that I was connected with him in any way."

In a November 10, 2017 appearance on The View, Bloom said she was interested in the case because it gave her "the opportunity get on the inside and talk to this guy directly," and she wanted Weinstein "to change the response...apologize for what you did, acknowledge the wrongdoing, don't go after the women... that is what he did. I did accomplish that."

However, Bloom has also claimed sweeping ignorance that doesn't match up with a memo published in "She Said" that shows Bloom was working with Weinstein at a rate of $895 an hour to quash the journalists' investigation and organize a multi-faceted campaign to silence one of his most high-profile accusers, Rose McGowan.

Once the full spectrum of allegations had been surfaced in detail in the Times investigation, Bloom said she was "shocked."

When reached for comment, Bloom referred to a previous statement given to outlets after "She Said" and "Catch and Kill" were released, where reiterated that joining the team was a "colossal mistake."

"I thank Jodi Kantor, Megan Twohey and Ronan Farrow for forcing me to confront the colossal mistake I made in working for Weinstein two years ago," she wrote. "While painful, I learn so much more from my mistakes than my successes.

Attorney David Boies

In addition to being Weinstein's longtime lawyer, Boies took extraordinary measures to undermine the Times' investigation into the allegations against the producer, who has worked with Boies and his family on projects including a book deal and a role for Boies's daughter, an aspiring actress.

Boies personally signed a contract with a private investigation organization, Black Cube, to smear and discredit the investigation into Weinstein and mislead Times reporters in an undercover operation that was eventually unearthed and cost Boies's firm its contract with the Times.

In Ronan Farrow's November 2017 article detailing the extensive network around Weinstein that silenced his accusers and threatened the Times' investigation, Boies said, "I don't believe former lawyers should criticize former clients," but acknowledged his role in suppressing the allegations.

"Although he vigorously denies using physical force, Mr. Weinstein has himself recognized that his contact with women was indefensible and incredibly hurtful,"Boies told Farrow. "In retrospect, I knew enough in 2015 that I believe I should have been on notice of a problem, and done something about it. I don't know what, if anything, happened after 2015, but to the extent it did, I think I have some responsibility. I also think that if people had taken action earlier it would have been better for Mr. Weinstein."

Boies did not immediately reply to Insider's request for comment.

Attorney Gloria Allred

Though Allred has a longtime reputation as one of the most vocal crusaders against sexual harassment and assault, "She Said" revealed her key role in the network around the Weinstein case that silenced at least one accuser with overwhelmingly common legal and financial arrangements.

Ashley Matthau is identified in "She Said" as a dancer who said she first met Allred shortly after she was assaulted by Weinstein while filming a movie. Allred's firm went on to help negotiate a confidential settlement in 2004 between Weinstein and Matthau, of which Allred took a 40% cut.

Allred told Ronan Farrow in 2017 that her firm had represented "thousands" of people who have entered into confidential settlements and said, "some people don't want their parents, their friends, members of their community to know."

Allred hasn't aired any regrets since, even defending confidential settlements in an interview included in "She Said" as an option for accusers, adding that clients are not forced to sign them and can be optimal for those looking for closure and privacy.

Allred did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Actress Lindsey Lohan

The actress sparked blowback when she took to her Instagram story to say that in the wake of the allegations, she felt "very bad for Harvey Weinstein right now," and she didn't think "it's right what's going on."

"He's never harmed me or done anything to me,"Lohan said, according to Vanity Fair. "We've done several movies together. And so I think everyone needs to stop. I think it's wrong. So stand up."

Lohan quickly took down the supportive videos she posted to Instagram before saying in a statement to the Daily Mail: "As someone who has lived their life in the public eye, I feel that allegations should always be made to the authorities and not played out in the media."

Representatives for Lohan did not immediately reply to Insider's request for comment.

Designer Donna Karan

The DKNY founder told the Daily Mail in October 2017 that she thought "we have to look at ourselves," before pointing to accusers as the potential problem.

"You look at everything all over the world today and how women are dressing and what they are asking by just presenting themselves the way they do," Karan said. "What are they asking for? Trouble."

She described Weinstein and his wife Georgina Chapman as "wonderful people."

One day later, Karan released a statement saying that her comments "were taken out of context and do not represent how I feel about the current situation concerning Harvey Weinstein," but did not appear to be edited out of context.

"I believe that sexual harassment is NOT acceptable and this is an issue that MUST be addressed once and for all regardless of the individual," she clarified.

DKNY did not immediately return request for comment.

Director Oliver Stone

Oscar-winning director Stone said shortly after the allegations were reported that he would withhold judgment until the case reached court, and said, "a man shouldn't be condemned by a vigilante system."

"I'm a believer that you wait until this thing gets to trial," Stone said in October 2017, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "It's not easy what he's going through, either. During that period he was a rival. I never did business with him and didn't really know him. I've heard horror stories on everyone in the business, so I'm not going to comment on gossip. I'll wait and see, which is the right thing to do."

After his comments were published, Stone wrote on Facebook that when he initially spoke, he was unaware of the extent of the allegations against Weinstein because he was traveling, and said he was "appalled."

"After looking at what has been reported in many publications over the last couple of days, I'm appalled and commend the courage of the women who've stepped forward to report sexual abuse or rape," Stone wrote on Facebook.

Representatives for Stone did not immediately return Insider's request for comment.

Director Woody Allen

Allen initially said he felt "sad" for Weinstein and that he worried women speaking out would start a "witch hunt," according to The BBC.

"The whole Harvey Weinstein thing is very sad for everybody involved," Allen told The BBC. "Tragic for the poor women that were involved, sad for Harvey that [his] life is so messed up."

Despite the nature and volume of the allegations, Allen said that "you also don't want it to lead to a witch hunt atmosphere, a Salem atmosphere, where every guy in an office who winks at a woman is suddenly having to call a lawyer to defend himself."

"That's not right either," Allen said.

Allen's comments raised eyebrows, considering the director had faced years of criticism over his relationship with Mia Farrow's adoptive daughter Soon-Yi Previn.

Allen's other adoptive daughter, Dylan Farrow, has alleged he sexually assaulted her in 1992, mentioning it in a 2013 interview with Vanity Fair and in an open letter published in The New York Times in 2014, but her first televised interview was granted to CNN in January 2018.

Allen later clarified his comments and further condemned Weinstein, telling Variety that he meant the producer was a "sad, sick man."

"When I said I felt sad for Harvey Weinstein I thought it was clear the meaning was because he is a sad, sick man," Allen told Variety. "I was surprised it was treated differently. Lest there be any ambiguity, this statement clarifies my intention and feelings."

Representatives for Allen did not immediately return Insider's request for comment.

  • A recent study by personal finance platform GoBankingRates revealed a list of the biggest US housing markets where it's most difficult to sell a house.
  • To gather the list, the study looked at cities where home values are greater than median list prices and analyzed each market across six weighted factors using figures from Zillow's 2019 Housing Data.
  • These six factors include: the average median list price, the average number of houses that hit the market, and the average number of days those houses spend on the real-estate listing platform Zillow.
  • Of the top 15 cities that made the list, six are located in Florida.

Trying to sell a house in a weak market can lead to disappointment and price cuts.

However, there are certain factors that owners can analyze to determine whether or not they're entering the market at a good time. For example, when houses in an area are sitting on a listing platform for an average of 100 days or more, it's usually a sign that properties are moving off the market slowly.

A recent study by personal finance platform GoBankingRates revealed a list of the 50 biggest US cities where it's most difficult to sell a house right now. Of the top 15 housing markets that made the list, six of them are located in Florida.

To gather the list, GoBankingRates looked at cities where home values are greater than median list prices and analyzed each market across six weighted factors using figures from Zillow's 2019 Housing Data: the average median list price, the difference between the average home value and the average median list price, the average number of houses that hit the market, the average number of days those houses spend on the real-estate listing platform Zillow, the percentage of listings with price cuts, and the median percentage of the price cuts.

The data in this study represents each market as of November 5, 2019. Keep reading for a look at the 15 cities where it's most difficult to sell a house right now.

Ikea redesigned a tiny research station meant to simulate life on Mars — see inside

Ikea Mars

Deep in the Utah desert, a tiny, compact facility houses scientists who want to experience a simulated version of life on Mars. The furniture might look familiar.

Ikea announced this week that it has partnered with the Mars Desert Research Station to decorate the two-story habitat with space-efficient furniture that could theoretically be put to use in future Mars colonies.

The research station houses teams of six scientists at a time, who spend two weeks living off food and water rations and oxygen packs. They traverse the area surrounding the research station using all-terrain vehicles, collecting rock samples and taking atmospheric readings in a "dress rehearsal" for sending humans to Mars.

The Swedish furniture giant first began working with the Mars Society, which runs the research station, two years ago when Ikea interior designer Christina Levenborn spent several days living in the habitat. Levenborn designed a line of furniture for small spaces based on her time there, according to Fast Company.

Now, Ikea has provided a range of its furniture to redecorate the interior of the research station to envision how future Mars denizens might live.

Take a look at the inside of the research station:

The research station is just eight yards across, built from materials meant to withstand the weather on Mars.

"For the habitat, we brought products on wheels for mobile living, stools for seating and table surfaces and stackable chairs for saving space," Ikea interior designer Christina Levenborn said in a release.

For the two weeks they spend at the facility, researchers aim to operate as if they were really isolated on Mars, surviving only on preserved food they've brought.

"We tried to work with products for small space living situation that could be arranged in a flexible and multifunctional way," Levenborn said.

The facility includes a lab, where researchers can test rock and atmospheric samples they've collected.

The space's round walls posed a design challenge, Levenborn said, as did the need for lightweight, sturdy furniture."

In a small space where many people have to share workspaces, it is important to be able to adjust to everyone's needs, whether they prefer to work standing or sitting," Levenborn said.

The facility includes greenhouses meant to grow food for survival on Mars.

Researchers also breathe using oxygen tanks whenever they leave the facility.

"It is necessary to have the whole crew on the same sleep-wake cycle. This is necessary anyway, to maximize the social space of the crew. When you want to be alone, you can go to your bunk and read," Mars Society president Robert Zubrin said in a statement.

"We hope to learn more about living in extremely small spaces and how our products can be used," Levenborn said. "Preparing for this kind of scarcity on Mars puts a focus on all the good things we have on earth that we take for granted."

25 celebrities who had the best style of the 2010s

Jennifer Lopez wore one show-stopping look after another.

Jennifer Lopez was named a style icon long before 2010, but the "On The Floor" singer continued to inspire fashion trends throughout the last decade.

The "naked" trend is just one of those that made waves in the 2010s, and Lopez proved that she is never one to shy away from the daring look. At the Billboard Music Awards in 2015, for example, the singer arrived in a revealing Charbel Zoe dress that featured crystal embellishments.

Ciara was another star that wasn't afraid to show it all off for the sake of fashion.

Similar to Jennifer Lopez, Ciara was also no stranger to the "naked" look. The singer arrived at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards in a sheer gold dress, which had a large cutout in the back and a high slit in the front, embracing her daring and fun style.

Everyone from Rita Ora to Tiffany Haddish was spotted in at least one version of the barely-there look throughout the decade.

A$AP Rocky took fashion risks that made him stand out.

A$AP Rocky has set himself apart from others when it comes to men's fashion.

From sporting popular brands to embracing popular trends like tie-dye, the "Fashion Killa" rapper has proved himself a style icon in the last decade.

Blake Lively brought back pantsuits in a major way.

Blake Lively has developed a signature style over the last decade that includes "Gossip Girl"-inspired fashion and many, many pantsuits.

Pantsuits were named one of the most popular trends in 2018, and Blake Lively was largely to thank for that.

Lively's closet includes many suits that vary from bright colors to bold patterns. In September 2018, the "A Simple Favor" star even wore six different styles of the chic trend in one week.

Emilia Clarke put her own spin on major fashion trends.

Emilia Clarke's red-carpet fashion proved she wasn't one to shy away from embracing trends. The "Game of Thrones" star embraced both the pantsuit and "no shirt" look in a black ensemble while attending the premiere of HBO drama "My Dinner With Hervé" in 2018.

Celebrities like Hailey Bieber, Bella Hadid, and Kacey Musgraves have also rocked the "no shirt" trend.

Céline Dion stunned in one colorful look after another.

Over the past few years, Céline Dion has proved she is the queen of celebrity fashion, wearing everything from elegant gowns to chic florals and even mismatching stilettos.

The "My Heart Will Go On" singer also mastered the head-to-toe monochromatic look, which has gone on to become one of the most popular trends in fashion.

Kendall Jenner brought back '90s-inspired fashion.

Tiny sunglasses and zebra-print clothing are just two popular trends from the '90s that have made a reappearance and Kendall Jenner has been seen rocking them both.

Throughout the 2010s, Jenner's wardrobe proved to be versatile, as she commonly switched up her style with athleisure looks, high-low dresses, and monochromatic pieces.

Chance the Rapper proved you can be casual and fashionable at the same time.

Casual footwear was everywhere in the 2010s, and Chance the Rapper was no stranger to the "dad" shoe — a '90s trend that has made a major comeback over the last decade.

The "No Problem" singer has mastered the casual look, sporting a T-shirt and jeans for performances, award shows, and day-to-day life. However, it's his "3" hat that has become so iconic that even Zac Efron has rocked one

Meghan Markle has become one of the most influential names in celebrity fashion.

Almost everything Meghan Markle wears sells out immediately, and brands and designers have been struggling to keep up with demand since the former actress announced her engagement to Prince Harry in November 2017.

The Duchess of Sussex puts her own spin on royal attire, and it's for this reason that Markle has been named the most powerful dresser of 2019 by global fashion search platform Lyst.

The royal usually opts for classic pieces with modern updates, often favoring muted colors and modest silhouette styles. Other looks that Markle is fond of include elegant, conservative pencil skirts and chic pantsuits

Taylor Swift continued rocking her signature look.

High-waisted bottoms replaced low-rise shorts and jeans in the 2010s, and Taylor Swift proved to be a big fan of the trend.

The "Look What You Made Me Do" singer has been sporting high-waisted shorts for years, including during a performance at the iHeart Radio Music Festival in 2012.

Kourtney Kardashian proved you can put a dressy spin on a casual look.

In the last decade, bike shorts have become a comfortable alternative to regular bottoms, and Kourtney Kardashian has frequently sported the popular trend.

The reality star has often been seen putting a dressy spin on the casual look by pairing her cycling shorts with high heels.

Celebrities like Hailey Baldwin and Gigi Hadid have also been advocates of the style.

Priyanka Chopra demonstrated some of the best ways to rock denim.

From ball gowns to crystal-embellished pantsuits, Priyanka Chopra has proved she knows how to dress up for any occasion, but the "Quantico" star is also the master of casual style.

In 2018, Chopra demonstrated how to wear mom jeans and a crop top — two styles that made a major comeback in the 2010s — by accessorizing her casual look with a pair of small black sunglasses and hoop earrings.

Timothée Chalamet brought statement suits to the red carpet.

Timothée Chalamet has made one fashion statement after another, sporting major trends like chunky sneakers and bold suits.

The "Call Me by Your Name" actor made waves in 2018 when he wore an all-floral look to the BFI London Film Festival, and again in 2019 when he donned a silky silver suit at the Venice Film Festival.

Kylie Jenner gave modern updates to older trends.

Kylie Jenner established herself as a trendsetter in the 2010s.

The makeup mogul has worn a number of stylish outfits over the years, and has frequently put her own spin on popular looks like the "no pants" and "naked dress" trends.

In 2018, Jenner also gave a modern update to the denim-on-denim trend, stepping out in a $1,090 jumpsuit by IRO Paris. She completed the ensemble with snakeskin booties and a furry Dior bag.

Zendaya wore one stunning look after another.

At just 23 years old, Zendaya has already cemented herself as a style icon in Hollywood.

In 2018, Zendaya put a glamorous spin on one of the most popular trends of the 2010s — athleisure. The "Euphoria" star paired a cherry-red tracksuit with a sleeveless jacket and white pumps for an appearance at New York Fashion Week.

Hailey Bieber was a fashion icon both on and off the runway.

Whether she's wearing blazers with no pants on the red carpet or rocking a sporty look on the street, Hailey Bieber (née Baldwin) consistently looks effortlessly cool.

Throughout the years, the model has worn some of the decade's biggest trends, including athleisure, heeled flips flops, neon, and more.

Rihanna wasn't afraid to wear daring looks.

Rihanna has never been one to shy away from daring, and often unconventional, looks. In 2017, she was even named the most powerful celebrity fashion influencer by Lyst.

From her crystal Gucci socks to the denim skirt she turned into a top, the "Umbrella" singer has proved herself to be one of the decade's most iconic names when it comes to women's fashion.

Beyoncé has made waves in the fashion world both on and off stage.

From couture gowns to glittery bodysuits, Beyoncé has always been fashion-forward both on and off the stage.

Fans of the "Formation" singer will have a hard time forgetting the "naked" Givenchy dress that she wore to the 2015 Met Gala or the crystal-embellished tuxedo dress she recently wore to the premiere of Disney's "The Lion King."

Billy Porter continues to make a statement with his red-carpet fashion.

Many stars, including Billy Porter, used fashion to make a statement in the 2010s. Porter famously turned heads and challenged gender norms by wearing a tuxedo gown to the 2019 Oscars.

His outfit made waves again when he showed up to the 2019 Tony Awards in a uterus-inspired pantsuit, which he said was in support of women's reproductive rights.

Kim Kardashian West embraced bright colors.

Kim Kardashian West often sported one of the most eye-catching trends of the 2010s: neon.

The reality star and mogul was seen wearing everything from highlighter-pink athletic wear to neon-green bikinis.

However, experts say the colorful trend will disappear in 2020, so don't expect to see Kardashian West in neon next year.

Jaden Smith wasn't afraid to push the boundaries of men's fashion.

Throughout the 2010s, Jaden Smith was often being pictured in skirts and dresses, proving that there are no rules when it comes to men's fashion.

The multihyphenate star also mastered the casual street style, wearing accessories like crossbody bags and black-and-white checkered fanny packs.

Gigi Hadid used accessories to take her style to the next level.

Gigi Hadid was a huge advocate for one of the biggest trends of the decade: tiny sunglasses. Extremely small sunglasses are a relic of the '90s but became a cool addition to any trendy outfit in the 2010s.

Aside from rocking tiny sunglasses, Hadid also wore fashion that looked like an optical illusion, monochromatic pantsuits, and more of the decade's biggest trends.

Nicki Minaj rocked designer fashion from head-to-toe.

The logo-mania trend made a major comeback in the 2010s, and Nicki Minaj was no stranger to wearing head-to-toe designer.

Thanks to the revival of the trend, brands like Gucci, Fendi, and Versace have seen a resurgence in sales over the last few years.

The Kardashian family and Bella Hadid have also been seen sporting the head-to-toe designer trend.

Kanye West made major strides in the fashion industry.

Kanye West's Yeezy empire inspired a more simplistic approach to high-end fashion, popularizing neutral tones like beige, olive, and white. Yeezy even appeared above names like Balmain, Adidas, and Alexander McQueen on a list of the hottest brands.

Ariana Grande's signature style could be recognized anywhere.

Grande made a cozy trend out of wearing oversized sweatshirts and thigh-high heeled boots to just about any occasion.

According to a 2018 report from Lyst, the year's biggest fashion trend was oversized hoodies. Lyst credited Ariana Grande for the 130% increase in searches for oversized hoodies, dubbing it the "Ariana effect."

Take a look around an eerie, abandoned island that was once used as a prison hundreds of miles off the coast of India

ross island

  • A cluster of more than 500 islands off the coast of India have a lot of history.
  • During the Indian Rebellion, the islands were the site of jails run by the British — who also built themselves fancy bungalows, churches, and even tennis courts.
  • In 1941, a large earthquake struck the islands, killing thousands. The Japanese took ownership of the islands in World War II, using them for bunkers.
  • Today they are owned by the Indian Navy, and members of the public can stroll through the old architecture, which is entirely covered in roots and vines.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

Hundreds of miles from the coast of India is a tiny speck of an island, measuring only one-third of a square mile.

Ross Island is one of the 572 islands that make up the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, once owned by the British and home to thousands of convicts and political prisoners. But after a large earthquake struck the area in 1941, thousands of residents were killed.

Control was eventually taken over by the Japanese, who used the strategically located islands as a safe zone during World War II. Bunkers were built to protect the soldiers, but once the war ended, ownership was given to the Indians.

Now in the hands of the Indian Navy, the islands once bustling with people are abandoned and completely overgrown with jungle vines. Keep scrolling to see the eerie beauty.

Ross Island was named after Sir Daniel Ross, the first man to inhabit the island for a year from 1788.

Sir Daniel Ross landed on the small island in 1788 and surveyed the land for a year. He eventually departed Ross Island due to the unpredictable weather, leaving it abandoned for the first time, but definitely not the last.

The small island is about 800 miles off the coast of India.

Ross Island is part of the Andaman and Nicobar islands, which are all small in size. Ross Island is just east of South Andaman Island, where the majority of the population lives and works.

Ross Island is reached by taking a short ferry from Port Blair.

Compared to other Andaman and Nicobar islands, Ross Island is just a small speck of land — but it has a big history.

It wasn't until almost 70 years after Sir Ross' visit, amid the Indian Rebellion, that the island and other islands became repopulated.

In 1857, the Indian Mutiny (also known as the Indian Rebellion) broke out, with the Indians battling for independence from the British. The British decided they needed a place to punish the Indian fighters, and the jails on the mainland were quickly filling up.

An illustration from 1872 shows the old jails on Ross Island.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands became the holding site for hundreds of rebels and convicts because of its extreme distance from the mainland.

Around the jails, the British started to build communities. On Ross Island, they built the Chief Commissioner's house, a cathedral, and even a graveyard for fallen British soldiers.

The British built settlements by ordering prisoners to clear the land and build structures for them.

The islands were covered in forests and the weather was humid, but still prisoners were forced to clear the islands to make way for Presbyterian churches, tennis courts, bungalows, and even swimming pools.

But life on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands felt isolated, and an appointment to work there wasn't considered prestigious.

Although the islands eventually had anything one would want, including manicured gardens, pools, and tennis courts, they were still not considered a luxury getaway. The isolation from the mainland left the British feeling bored and useless, and being appointed there was usually regarded as a punishment, not a tropical island escape.

For decades, the islands were home to a notoriously brutal prison system for Indian revolutionaries. Today, the buildings are completely empty and covered in vines.

While housing prisoners, the jails were known to be ridden with disease, and prisoners were over-worked, over-crowded, and starving.

The jails eventually closed in 1937, but the British continued to live there until disaster struck.

In 1941, an 8.1-magnitude earthquake damaged the islands and killed almost 3,000 people

After the earthquake, Japanese troops took control of the islands and built bunkers there. Those structures are now overrun by roots and vines.

The British were unable to fight off the Japanese troops, who took over the islands and built bunkers. Remains of the bunkers can still be found to this day.

A few years after World War II ended, India gained independence and the islands were passed over to the Indian government in 1947.

Although there was a change in ownership, Japanese and British troops continued to live on the island until the late 1970s.

In 1979, Ross Island was officially handed over to the Indian Navy.

A small base was set up and eventually, a museum was built on the island so tourists could learn about the history of Ross Island and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

There is a guest house on one of the islands for visiting Navy officials — but staying there seems a spooky proposition.

While the guest house is an option, considering the eerie, overgrown state of the land, spending the night must be intimidating.

An abandoned church is still flooded with natural sunlight almost daily.

A church once full of people still stands tall, but is now completely overtaken by vines and roots.

Today, Ross Island is open to tourists, and even features a few shops and vendors selling food.

Time will tell if these new buildings go the same way as the others.

Warren Buffett, the Omaha-based billionaire who runs Berkshire Hathaway, has long said that he doesn't engage in bidding wars.

He explained his thinking in the 2016 annual letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders. "We don't participate in auctions," he wrote.

He continued: "A line from a country song expresses our feeling about new ventures, turnarounds, or auction-like sales: 'When the phone don't ring, you'll know it's me.'"

This practice was recently put to the test when Berkshire Hathaway was outbid for Tech Data, a technology distributor, according to CNBC. Late Wednesday, Tech Data accepted a bid from Apollo Global Management for $145 per share, or $5.14 billion, which topped Buffett's previous bid of $140 per share, or slightly more than $5 billion.

Buffett said that he has no intention of making a higher offer, CNBC reported. Tech Data can solicit other bids until December 9, according to a company press release.

Now, it appears that Buffett will have to look elsewhere for opportunities to spend down his record $128 billion cash pile. In a 2018 letter to shareholders, Buffett wrote that Berkshire would like to spend its cash making acquisitions.

However, it's become increasingly difficult to find companies that are priced at a deal. "Prices are sky-high for businesses possessing decent long-term prospects," Buffett wrote. Berkshire's last major deal was its 2016 purchase of Precision Castparts Corp. for $32 billion.

Here are four deals that Buffett has lost because he won't engage in a bidding war, in chronological order.

13 quirky British Christmas traditions Americans may have never heard of

  • Christmas traditions in America and in the UK vary greatly.
  • We rounded up the quirkiest British holiday traditions that you may have never heard of.
  • Every Christmas, Brits love to watch pantomimes, eat Yorkshire puddings and mince pies, and meet their school friends down the pub.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

From pantomimes to Christmas pudding and the Queen's speech, there are some small but notable differences in how Brits celebrate Christmas compared to Americans.

With the help of leading language learning app Babbel, we compiled a list of the quirkiest British Christmas traditions you may have never heard of.

Pantomimes, or "pantos," are plays performed around Christmastime in the UK.

Pantos are humorous, slapstick entertainment for the whole family, often featuring men dressed in drag. They are sometimes based on a famous fairytale or story, like "Cinderella,""Peter Pan," or "The Wizard of Oz."

According to Babbel, there are certain tropes in pantomimes that make them unique. For example, there's often a villain who will sneak up on the protagonist intermittently throughout the play. It's then the role of the audience to scream, "He's behind you!" to the main character — while he or she struggles to figure out what's going on.

Yorkshire puddings are perfect with gravy, but people outside the UK may have never heard of them.

A traditional British roast dinner wouldn't be complete without Yorkshire puddings filled with Bisto or homemade gravy. Yorkshire puddings — not to be confused with sweet puddings — are made of eggs, flour, and milk or water with a distinct hole in the middle. They closely resemble what Americans know as popovers.

While Yorkshire puddings are commonplace at Sunday dinners throughout the year, they're also eaten at Christmastime — though some argue they have no place on a Christmas plate.

Santa Claus is referred to as "Father Christmas."

While some do refer to old Saint Nick as Santa Claus in the UK, it is widely accepted that Father Christmas is his more traditionally British name. "Santa Claus" is seen as an Americanism, and even The National Trust said that "Santa Claus should be known as 'Father Christmas' in stately homes and historic buildings because the name is more British."

British children hang Christmas stockings by the ends of their bed.

In America, Christmas stocking are hung by the fireplace with care. However, some British children hang their stockings at the ends of their beds for Father Christmas to fill up while they're sleeping.

Christmas Eve is a time for school friend reunions.

Thanksgiving weekend is seen as an opportunity in the United States for students to reunite with friends from high school or middle school. In the UK, it's a tradition for school friends to come together on Christmas Eve, often at the local bar or pub.

Christmas pudding is a traditional British dessert popular during the holiday season.

A Christmas pudding is a dense fruit cake often made weeks or even months in advance. This time allows the dried fruit to soak up alcohol that's regularly poured onto the cake in the weeks before it's consumed.

On Christmas, the cake is set alight and then topped with a sauce of brandy butter or rum butter, cream, lemon cream, ice cream, custard, or sweetened béchamel. It is also sometimes sprinkled with caster or powdered sugar.

Mince pies are pastries filled with dried fruits and spices that are eaten at Christmas.

The first known mince pie recipe dates back to an 1830s-era English cookbook. By the mid-17th century, people reportedly began associating the small pies with Christmas. At the time, they were traditionally filled with a mixture of pork, or another kind of meat, with sage and other spices. Nowadays, the pies are filled with fruits.

Brits say "Happy Christmas" instead of "Merry Christmas."

You might remember a scene from the first "Harry Potter" movie in which Ron says, "Happy Christmas, Harry!" While this may sound strange to an American, saying "Happy Christmas" is commonplace in the UK, as opposed to "Merry Christmas."

Christmas crackers are cardboard tubes wrapped in brightly colored paper and twisted at each end that two people pull for a fun surprise.

Christmas crackers are often pulled at the start of the meal, and the paper hats found inside are worn throughout the meal. Also inside each cracker is a "banger," which makes a loud pop when the cracker is pulled, a joke, and a small prize.

The jokes are usually cheesy and festive. For example: "Why did Santa's helper go to the doctor? Because he had low elf esteem!"

Millions of British citizens watch the Queen's annual televised Christmas Day speech every year.

Every year, families across the United Kingdom watch the Queen's Christmas address, informally known as the Queen's speech. According to the Telegraph, the first Christmas address was 251 words long, but Queen Elizabeth II averages 656 words. It is often one of the most-watched television programs on Christmas Day in the UK.

Christmas commercials are as talked-about as Super Bowl commercials in the United States.

While Super Bowl commercials are highly scrutinized in the US, Brits pay just as close attention to Christmas commercials. Not only is the John Lewis ad, or "advert," a Christmas tradition, but almost every supermarket and clothing brand tries to get in on the buzz with a talked-about Christmas commercial.

School nativity plays are a popular tradition in UK primary schools.

While religious elementary schools in the United States may put on nativity plays, they are arguably much more popular and part of the culture in Britain. In the popular British Christmas movie, "Love Actually," the characters even attend a Christmas nativity play.

Brits take advantage of after-Christmas sales on Boxing Day.

Boxing Day is typically referred to as the British Black Friday, but there are a couple of differences between the holidays.

Boxing Day falls the day after Christmas. Boxing Day also has a rich cultural history in Great Britain. Originating in the mid-1600s, the day was traditionally a day off for servants. On this day, servants would receive a "Christmas Box," or gift, from their master. The servants would then return home on Boxing Day to give "Christmas Boxes" to their families.

  • First lady Melania Trump has unveiled the 2019 White House Christmas decorations.
  • "The Spirit of America" is the theme of this year's decorations, and includes tributes to children's games, classic holiday stories, and cities across America.

First lady Melania Trump unveiled the 2019 White House Christmas decorations in several glittering rooms on Monday, keeping with the theme of "The Spirit of America."

The White House described the theme as "a tribute to the traditions, customs, and history that make our Nation great."

CNN's Kate Bennett reported that the days of decorating the White House's main rooms took volunteers from all 50 states to hang 800 feet of garland, 15,000 bows, and more than 2,500 strands of lights.

The White House also released a video tour of this year's decorations:

On November 25, the first lady received the White House Christmas tree from a horse-drawn delivery.

National Park Service staff hauled the massive tree inside.

The 18-foot tree was then installed as the first decoration in the Blue Room.

One week later, the tree, along with the rest of the White House, was decked out and ready for visitors.

Just days after Thanksgiving, the first lady gave the decorations a final walk-through.

The US Marine Band played in the glistening Grand Foyer as members of the press were welcomed to view the decorations on Monday, December 2.

Boxes of chocolate kisses were waiting for visitors at the preview.

The Grand Foyer was lit up with green Christmas tees covered in fake snow and white lights that shone overhead to make "a glistening winter garden," the White House said in a release.

The first family's annual ornament, a waving American flag, dotted trees throughout the wing.

White paper stars cast celestial shadows across the glowing white East Colonnade.

Along the sides of the hall stood acrylic panels showing off some of the country's largest landmarks as "a timeline of American design, innovation, and architecture," the White House said in a release.

The East Wing also hosted the Gold Star Family tree, which honors America's Armed Forces and their families.

The Red Room featured a small lit tree with several playful accents, which the White House said "ignites the childlike spirit we all have at this time of year."

The name of the first lady's signature childhood wellbeing program was represented on a Scrabble-tile ornament featured in a wreath alongside dominos.

A Scrabble board in the base of the tree spelled out some key positive words associated with the "Be Best" campaign.

Trees made of playing cards and green leaves completed the Red Room's games theme.

The Green Room featured nods to "beloved and classic Christmas tales" and a Christmas countdown, the White House said in a press release.

The China Room displayed a fully set table and a holiday feast.

The artificial feast featured pyramids of fruit, a turkey, and vegetables.

A gingerbread model of the White House in the State Dining Room made for this year's decorations weighs more than 300 lbs.

"Fun fact,"CNN reporter Kate Bennett added on Twitter, "the banisters are made of spaghetti."

On one side of the gingerbread White House was a red model of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, Seattle's Space Needle, and Mount Rushmore.

On the other side stood models of the Alamo, the Liberty Bell, the Statue of Liberty, and St. Louis' Gateway Arch to highlight "America the Beautiful," the White House said.

The White House gets tens of thousands of visitors each holiday season.

How much it costs to have a baby in every state, whether you have health insurance or don't

  • The average cost of having a baby in the US is $10,808.
  • In 2016, 2,684,803 mothers had a vaginal birth and 1,258,581 mothers had a c-section, the latter of which is on the rise.
  • FAIR Health gave Business Insider a state-by-state view of how much it costs to have a baby in every state for both a vaginal birth and c-section, with and without insurance.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

The cost of having a baby isn't cheap — in the United States, at least.

The average cost to have a baby in the US, without complications during delivery, is $10,808— which can increase to $30,000 when factoring in care provided before and after pregnancy.

When considering the fact that in the US, 2,621,010 mothers had a vaginal birth and 1,232,339 mothers had a c-section in 2017, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, that's a lot of money going into the healthcare system just from maternity costs.

C-sections are the more costly of the two, and they're on the rise. The likelihood of a C-section in the US has increased by 500% since the early 1970s, reported Neel Shah for US News.

But whether you have a vaginal birth or a C-section, the cost varies depending on what state you live in. FAIR Health provided Business Insider with a state-by-state view on just how much it costs to have a baby in every state.

Scroll through below to find out how much it costs to have a baby in your state, listed alphabetically. We've included the median cost of having a vaginal birth with insurance and having a vaginal birth without insurance, as well as the cost of having a c-section with insurance and having a c-section without insurance.

The cost with insurance reflects the full hospital bill. Actual out-of-pocket costs would be lower and dependent on the coinsurance or copay included in the individual's health insurance plan. The cost without insurance is based on the full amount a hospital might bill, which an uninsured person would be fully responsible for unless other arrangements were made.

good actors bad movies 2019

It seems inevitable that at some point in an actor's career they will end up starring in a film that is slammed by critics.

Here are some popular actors who starred in critical flops in 2019.

Note: All scores were current on the date of publication and are subject to change.

Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler failed to keep "Murder Mystery" (2019) afloat.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 45%

Summary: In the comedy "Murder Mystery," police officer Nick Spitz (Adam Sandler) whisks his wife Audrey (Jennifer Aniston) away on a romantic European getaway, only for them to find themselves at the center of a scandalous murder.

Critics were dumbfounded by the Netflix original, saying it was short on laughs and barely watchable.

"'Murder Mystery' is neither a comedy nor a mystery," wrote The Daily Times critic Amanda Greever. "It's just bad behavior masquerading as mass entertainment."

Taraji P. Henson starred in the underwhelming "What Men Want" (2019).

Rotten Tomatoes score: 43%

Summary: In the comedy "What Men Want," high-powered sports agent Ali Davis (Taraji P. Henson) feels like she is always pushed to the sidelines by her male coworkers — until she gains the uncanny ability to hear the inner thoughts of men.

Many critics scratched their heads at "What Men Want," calling it an unnecessary follow-up to "What Women Want" (2000), which was also a somewhat underwhelming comedy.

"'What Men Want' is pure shrug cinema: not bad so much as wispily superfluous, which may not come as a surprise if you can recall the similarly disposable 2000 original," wrote Robbie Collin in his review for The Daily Telegraph

Samuel L. Jackson reprised his role as John Shaft in the lackluster "Shaft" (2019).

Rotten Tomatoes score: 32%

Summary: In the action-comedy sequel "Shaft," Samuel L. Jackson returned as John Shaft, the estranged father of cybersecurity genius JJ Shaft (Usher). Despite being absent for most of his son's youth, the two must team up to take down Harlem's criminal underground.

Critics were dumbfounded by the action installment, with some going as far as to say that the sequel retroactively ruined the clout of its predecessors.

"They've taken one of the coolest, suavest characters in movie history and cast him in this multigenerational 'grumpy old dad' sitcom," wrote Justin Chang for Film Week

Dennis Quaid fronted the weak thriller "The Intruder" (2019).

Rotten Tomatoes score: 32%

Summary: In the suspense thriller "The Intruder," charming newlyweds Scott (Michael Ealy) and Annie Russell (Meagan Good) are ecstatic when they buy their dream home but are quickly unsettled by the presence of an overbearing neighbor (Dennis Quaid) who harbors dark intentions.

Critics described "The Intruder" as a laughably bad thriller with a predictable by-the-numbers plot.

"'The Intruder,' from its hokey title to its predictable denouement, is the very definition of cookie-cutter modern thriller moviemaking, passing the time but you really wouldn't want it in your house," wrote Paul Mount for Starburst

Keira Knightley shined in the directionless drama "The Aftermath" (2019).

Rotten Tomatoes score: 27%

Summary: Set in Germany, 1946 "The Aftermath" centers around Rachael Morgan (Keira Knightley) as she reunites with her veteran husband Lewis (Jason Clarke) following World War II. But Rachael is thrown when her husband mentions that they'll be staying in the same house as a German widower (Alexander Skarsgård).

Reception for "The Aftermath" was muddied by the film's morbid nature and corny dialogue.

"The acting in 'The Aftermath' is strong across the board, but the script and editing both fail the performers," wrote Joe Nolan in his review for Nashville Scene

Will Smith played opposite himself in the critically panned "Gemini Man" (2019).

Rotten Tomatoes score:26%

Summary: The action thriller "Gemini Man" pits Will Smith against himself as he plays Henry Bogan, an experienced assassin who soon realizes that he is being pursued by a younger copy of himself.

Critics had a heap of reasons to dislike "Gemini Man," with the most vocal complaints pointing to a weak script and distracting filmmaking style.

"Obviously, the dire dialogue doesn't help, but what blunts Smith's performance and makes the film itself hell to watch is the innovative, ultra-high-frame-rate which renders actors, objects and even the air somehow flimsy and weird and fake," wrote Charlotte O'Sullivan in her review for the London Evening Standard

Ansel Elgort gave his all in the dismal drama "The Goldfinch" (2019).

Rotten Tomatoes score: 24%

Summary: Based on the bestselling novel of the same name, "The Goldfinch" traces the tragic life of Theodore Decker (Ansel Elgort), whose mother was killed in a museum bombing when h was a child. As his grief follows him into adulthood, so does the mystery of a missing museum painting of a golden bird.

Critics called "The Goldfinch" a beautifully filmed mess that dragged its talented cast down with clumsy direction and a shapeless script.

"Tartt's book has been put through a grater, then reassembled into a wet prestige patty of a picture, all dainty set dressing and limp psychology," wrote Tim Robey for The Telegraph

Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson did their best to salvage "Men in Black: International" (2019).

Rotten Tomatoes score: 23%

Summary: In the latest "Men in Black" sequel, experienced Agent H (Chris Hemsworth) and novice Agent M (Tessa Thompson) join together to combat the growing presence of an invasive alien species that can transform itself into anything.

Critics were unimpressed with this action flick, calling it a lifeless cash grab that was buoyed by Hemsworth and Thompson's on-screen chemistry.

"In this uninspired 'MiB' reboot, the effervescent biplay between Hemsworth and Thompson almost compensates for the vacuum where a live-wire alien invasion comedy should be," wrote Peter Travers for Rolling Stone. "Almost being the operative word."

Gina Rodriguez failed to rescue the action thriller "Miss Bala" (2019).

Rotten Tomatoes score: 22%

Summary: In the action movie "Miss Bala," Gloria (Gina Rodriguez) goes to the police after her friend is abducted from a Mexican nightclub, only for the cops to turn her into the same captors. Gloria now has to outmaneuver the cartel without knowing who she can trust.

Critics felt like "Miss Bala" suffered from bombastic Hollywood-style cliches and ultimately had too many moving parts to be a compelling action movie.

"Anyone thinking about plunking down the bucks to check out 'Miss Bala' this weekend: you DEFINITELY deserve better than this," wrote Chicago Sun-Times critic Richard Roeper.

The talents of Tiffany Haddish, Elisabeth Moss, and Melissa McCarthy were perhaps wasted by "The Kitchen" (2019).

Rotten Tomatoes score: 22%

Summary:  After their husbands are sent to jail for their involvement in the mob, three 1970s housewives (Tiffany Haddish, Elisabeth Moss, and Melissa McCarthy) are forced to step up and take their husbands' places in the Irish mafia.

In general, critics were disappointed by "The Kitchen" and felt that Haddish, Moss, and McCarthy were undervalued by a film riddled with pacing issues and a weak script.

"Everyone tries," wrote Ed Power for The Telegraph. "Unfortunately, the leads appear to believe they're in three very different films."

Natalie Portman starred in the ill-conceived film "Lucy in the Sky" (2019).

Rotten Tomatoes score:22%

Summary: The partially biographical drama "Lucy in the Sky" centers around Lucy Cola (Natalie Portman), a head-strong woman who places all of her ambitions on becoming an astronaut and launching into outer space. But when she finally returns home from her epic mission, Lucy feels disillusioned by life on Earth.

Critics called "Lucy in the Sky" an unintentionally funny drama that ultimately failed to convey any semblance of a message.

"Filmmaker Noah Hawley delivers a slow-moving and mostly underwhelming character study that persistently holds the viewer at arms length," wrote David Nusair for Reel Film Reviews

Hilary Duff played Sharon Tate in the poorly received flick "The Haunting of Sharon Tate" (2019).

Rotten Tomatoes score: 21%

Summary: Loosely based on the real-life murder of Hollywood actress Sharon Tate, the thriller "The Haunting of Sharon Tate" stars Hilary Duff as the titular heroine, who foresees her death before it's ordered by infamous cult leader Charles Manson.

Critics called this flick a forgettable schlockfest that felt exploitative of its original subject matter.

"'The Haunting of Sharon Tate' deserves the instant obscurity for which it is certainly destined," wrote Frank Scheck for The Hollywood Reporter.

Matthew McConaughey was the lead of the foggy thriller "Serenity" (2019).

Rotten Tomatoes score: 20%

Summary: "Serenity" is a dramatic thriller that tells the story of fishing-boat captain Baker Dill (Matthew McConaughey) whose tranquil lifestyle is interrupted by his ex-wife Karen (Anne Hathaway), when she bursts into his life begging him to kill her abusive new husband.

The thriller was panned by critics who felt that the stars were saddled with an overwhelmingly campy script.

Independent film critic Patrick Smith wrote: "It's a sweaty collection of neo-noir motifs, with a twist so seismically stupid that you're not only left with whiplash but months of intense physiotherapy."

David Harbour took a crack at playing the demonic protagonist of "Hellboy" (2019).

Rotten Tomatoes score: 17%

Summary: In the science-fiction-infused action movie "Hellboy," David Harbour starred as the titular half-demon, half-human protagonist. The film follows Hellboy as he is tasked with stopping Nimue the Blood Queen (Milla Jovovich) from destroying the world.

"Hellboy" was flooded with poor reviews from film critics, who criticized its structureless plot and forced humor.

"Watching Hellboy is my new personal idea of hell,"Chandler Levack of Globe and Mail wrote.

Critics felt that even Henry Cavill's performance couldn't elevate "Night Hunter" (2019).

Rotten Tomatoes score:14%

Summary: The psychological thriller "Night Hunter" follows Detective Walter Marshall (Henry Cavill) as he tries to piece together an unsolved murder with the help and hindrance of his local police force and a mysterious vigilante.

Critics were puzzled by the over-the-top thriller, which they said wasted a solid assembly of actors on a dated concept.

"A stellar cast, skilled musical score composers, and a solid set of inspirations combine to little beyond an uninspiring drama at best, or a leery piece of pulp deserving of eyerolls at worst," wrote Jim Ross for Film Inquiry

Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson played con artists in the messy comedy "The Hustle" (2019).

Rotten Tomatoes score: 14%

Summary: "The Hustle" is a comedy about elite con artist Josephine Chesterfield (Anne Hathaway), who makes a living stealing from rich and powerful men. When low-level grifter Penny Rust (Rebel Wilson) comes into Josephine's life, she offers help in teaching her in the ways of high crime.

"The Hustle" fell flat with critics despite Hathaway and Wilson's best efforts to glean comedic moments from an overall lackluster flick.

"Who's conning who here?"Adam Graham asked in his review for Detroit News. "In 'The Hustle,' everyone's a sucker, most of all the audience."

Keanu Reeves tried to save his family in "Replicas" (2019) but apparently couldn't save the film itself.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 9%

Summary: After his entire family is killed in a horrific car accident, genius biologist Will Foster (Keanu Reeves) stops at nothing to bring them back from the brink of death in the science-fiction thriller "Replicas."

This sci-fi film baffled critics with its thoughtless direction and dragging pace.

As Charles Bramesco wrote for The Guardian,"After what may be one hundred hours, the film does not so much end as it stops, the score's wrapping-up tone an evident substitute for closure or resolution."

6. Best travel deal: Trtl Pillow, $18 (originally $30) [You save $12]

The Trtl Pillow might look weird, but the design lends itself well to comfort and support, so you can actually sleep through your entire red-eye. We think it's the best travel pillow you can bring on your flights, bus rides, and train rides because it's very soft and cushioned, but also surprisingly supportive.

7. Best air purifier deal: Coway Airmega 400 Smart Air Purifier, $310 (originally $749) [You save $439]

We reviewed and loved this air purifier for its ability to self-adjust depending on the air's pollution level while still being super quiet. It doesn't get discounted often and when it has, prices hover around $465, so this is a worthwhile deal. Coway also makes the top air purifier pick in our buying guide, so we know the brand is reliable.

8. Best robot vacuum deal: Ecovacs Deebot 500 Robot Vacuum, $135 (originally $280) [You save $145] Better price than Cyber Monday

Robot vacuums make cleaning your entire home much easier. They're fast, thorough, and most importantly, you don't have to lift a finger to keep your floors dirt- and dust-free. You'll be able to schedule cleanings through the app or Alexa/Google Assistant. Surprisingly, it has an even better deal right now than on Cyber Monday — it's a little more than 50% off.

9. Best mattress deal: Casper Sleep 12-inch Queen Foam Mattress, $845 (originally $995) [You save $150]

Casper is one of those rare startups that also sells on Amazon. You can get the signature Casper Sleep 12-inch Queen Foam Mattress (currently $845 or 15% off) deal on the Casper website, too, but if you're shopping Amazon deals anyway, it might be easier to simply add it to your existing cart of other products.

10. Best stand mixer deal: KitchenAid KSM150PSCL Artisan Series 5-Qt. Stand Mixer, $280 (originally $430) [You save $150]

You can save $150 on the popular KitchenAid Artisan Series 5-Qt. Stand Mixer, which has a tilt-head design rather than a bowl-lift one (the latter is only preferable if you're making huge batches or working with heavy doughs most often since it's slightly more stable).

Not all colors are available at this price, and stock is going fast, so pick carefully. We're partial to the Almond Cream color, which was included in the sale when we last checked. Do note that this is not the lowest price we've seen the mixer at on Amazon — it was about $80 cheaper on Black Friday, but this may be the lowest you see it at until the next major sale holiday.

11. Best water bottle deal: Takeya Originals Vacuum-Insulated Water Bottle, $14.32 (originally $23) [You save $8.68]

We carry around Takeya's bottles in our own lives and would recommend stocking up on a few of these for yourself or as gifts. The sturdy, double-wall insulated bottles work for travel, the gym, and everyday life, and we love the spout lid that prevents spills and messes.

12. Best cookware deal: Lodge Dutch Oven, $45 (originally $60) [You save $15] *in stock December 9*

Lodge makes affordable yet high-performance kitchen essentials like cast iron pans and this versatile Dutch oven. It's an exception to the rule that cookware staples should be expensive investments and lets you make a large variety of meals for less. It comes in many eye-catching colors like Pumpkin and Storm Blue.

13. Best DNA kit deal: AncestryDNA: Genetic Ethnicity Test, $59 (originally $99) [You save $40]

AncestryDNA, along with 23andMe, always discounts its at-home DNA tests around the holidays. Thankfully, you still have time to learn about your unique ancestry with this Cyber Week deal.

  • All deals are at least 20% off, with the occasional exception for products that are rarely discounted or provide an outsized value.

These eye-popping designs show why color-blocked cakes will be the biggest wedding cake trend in 2020

the knot colorblocked cakes

  • Color-blocked wedding cakes will be a huge trend at weddings next year, according to experts with The Knot, the nation's leading wedding marketplace.
  • Whether you choose one monochromatic cake or a lineup of colorful desserts, these avant-garde cake designs will be everywhere in 2020.
  • Mysticism and spirituality — think crystals and geodes — are also making their way into wedding cake designs and other aspects of a couple's celebrations.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

For many brides and grooms, cutting the wedding cake is one of the most celebratory moments of their big day — so why not make it really stand out?

At The Knot's annual gala in New York City, the leading wedding marketplace and wedding planning website showcased the hottest wedding cake trend for 2020: bold, color-blocked wedding cakes.

While one monochromatic cake is sure to wow wedding guests, a full lineup of colorful cakes will help make a wedding extra memorable.

If your theme is more romantic, consider a cake like this pink watercolor tower with fabric-like detailing.

Naked cakes were all the rage in the 2010s. While the trend is waning as the next decade begins, watercolor cakes are rising in popularity, embodying the same carefree and laid-back style without any fussiness.

Geode-inspired cake designs have risen in popularity over the years, and this blue cake is a total dream.

As couples continue to embrace mystic, spiritual vibes at their weddings — think crystals, sage smudging, and aura photo booths — it may come as no surprise that geode and crystal-inspired cakes are rising in popularity.

This purple tiered cake covered in crystals is another spiritually inspired look for a black-tie affair.

Mysticism is also showing up in other aspects of weddings, such as the entertainment. The Knot reports that more couples than ever before are hiring tarot card readers and other out-of-the-box entertainers for their weddings.

While classic cakes are always in style, couples can also consider bolder shapes and colors.

This bright yellow, square-tiered wedding cake is certainly bolder, but couples are encouraged to take risks with their wedding cake in the new year.

Decorations don't have to be edible when it comes to avant-garde wedding cake designs.

While The Knot reports that edible flowers are rising in popularity, this cake also proves that wedding cake decorations can also be purely ornamental. The contrast of the bright orange cake and nautical decorations also enforces the idea that couples should stay away from cliché designs and embrace the element of surprise.

Mark Zuckerberg spent almost $60 million on 2 waterfront estates in Tahoe last winter. Here's a look at the 10 properties he owns across the US, from a modest Palo Alto home to a Hawaiian plantation.

Facebook billionaire Mark Zuckerberg recently invited CBS This Morning cohost Gayle King into his Palo Alto house for a rare look at his personal life with wife Priscilla Chan, reported Business Insider's Ben Gilbert.

But that's not the Facebook CEO's only home. He dropped more than $59 million on two adjacent Lake Tahoe properties last winter, Katherine Clarke of The Wall Street Journal reported. The purchase happened privately through a limited-liability company and a high-end wealth manager, according to Clarke.

It's just the latest addition to Zuckerberg's collection of properties in the western US — in addition to Lake Tahoe and Palo Alto he owns properties in San Francisco and the Hawaiian island of Kauai.

Collectively, Zuckerberg has purchased 10 properties, though he has a knack for also buying surrounding properties to ensure his privacy — he bought four homes surrounding his main Palo Alto residence and a stake in a beach adjacent to a plantation he purchased in Kauai.

Zuckerberg's also known for getting embroiled in a bit of real-estate conflict — there was a dispute over the landlocked parcels on the plantation, and neighbors reportedly weren't pleased with the effects of Zuckerberg's year-plus renovation on his San Francisco townhouse.

Take a look at Zuckerberg's real-estate portfolio.

Mark Zuckerberg lives in a 5,000-square-foot estate in Palo Alto, California.

He purchased the Crescent Park neighborhood home in May 2011 for $7 million, Business Insider's Tanza Loudenback reported. He's since tricked it out with a "custom-made artificially intelligent assistant,"according to CNBC.

Compared with Zuckerberg's $71.5 billion net worth, the five-bedroom, five-bathroom home is quite modest.

Architectural Digest described it as a "'no frills' abode" that chooses function over extravagance. Outside, it features a big backyard, a pool, and lush, detailed landscaping. Inside, there is a spacious kitchen and plenty of windows allowing for sunlight.

The following year, Zuckerberg began buying four homes surrounding his Palo Alto residence.

He spent more than $43 million on these properties, Katherine Clarke of the Wall Street Journal reported, citing public records. After leasing the homes back to their former owners, he planned to demolish and rebuild them in 2016.

According to Claudine Zap of Realtor, city officials didn't approve this plan, and Zuckerberg filed a new plan that allowed him to renovate two of the homes and rebuild the other two as single-story homes, creating a sort of compound.

Zuckerberg also owns a 5,500-square-foot townhouse in San Francisco.

He reportedly bought the home for $10 million in 2013, according to SF Gate. The house, which dates back to 1928, is on a 9,800-square-foot lot and features 70 square feet of sidewalk frontage, according to Clarke.

According to Google Maps, it's between the Noe Valley and Mission District neighborhoods in Dolores Heights on 21st Street.

The Compass real-estate agent Natalie Hatvany Kitchen told Clarke it's "a slightly grittier area and certainly not where you'd expect to find someone of his wealth and stature."

The townhouse became a fixer-upper, with Zuckerberg spending more than $1.6 million in renovations.

Zuckerberg spent an estimated $65,000 remodeling the kitchen and a bathroom, according to SF Gate. He also added a new media room, a wine room, and a greenhouse — the latter reportedly cost $60,000.

The renovation took 17 months, according to Lamar Anderson of Curbed, and left neighbors with torn-up sidewalks and no street parking. Neighbors sent around a letter complaining about his illegally parked SUVs, Clarke reported.

In 2014, Zuckerberg's real-estate portfolio expanded to the Pacific with a $100 million splurge on two properties on Kauai Island in Hawaii.

These properties span 750 acres across an isolated stretch of Hawaiian beach, according to Business Insider's Madeline Stone. Zuckerberg said he and wife, Priscilla Chan, bought the land because they're "dedicated to preserving its natural beauty."

In 2017, he purchased another 89 acres for more than $45 million, Clarke reported.

He first paid $49.8 million for an 89.2% stake of Pila'a Beach, an isolated oceanfront property.

The property is 393 acres and not publicly listed, according to Stone.

The beach is difficult to access, with a half-mile trail that leads down to the shore.

The beach is open to the public, and Zuckerberg's land is situated a bit farther back from the shoreline, Stone wrote.

Zuckerberg reportedly paid $66 million for the Kahu'aina Plantation, which is adjacent to the beach.

The 357-acre former sugarcane plantation includes 2,500 feet of white-sand beach and has a working organic farm ripe with crops, including ginger, turmeric, and papaya. The farm is also home to goats and turtles, according to Zuckerberg's Facebook page.

The plantation was approved for up to 80 homes, but Zuckerberg reportedly plans to build just one.

He plans to build a 6,100-square-foot two-bedroom house, including a 16-bay garage complex and a "ranch administration building" featuring key-card-protected offices and security headquarters, according to Zap.

Zuckerberg bought as many as two dozen landlocked parcels on the plantation.

The rights to those parcels are known as "kuleanas." There was a dispute over four of these parcels, which were granted to native Hawaiian families, and Zuckerberg later dropped it, according to Clarke.

Last winter, Zuckerberg dropped $59 million on two adjacent private waterfront estates on Lake Tahoe, a popular destination for Bay Area residents.

Zuckerberg's estates are on the west shore outside Tahoe City, an area known for "old, understated money —less flash, more hunker in the woods,"Clarke reported, adding that the families of the late Hewlett-Packard founder Bill Hewlett and the late publishing icon Charles McClatchy are neighbors.

The transaction was carried out secretly and wasn't revealed publicly until the following May.

According to Clarke, Zuckerberg purchased the properties through a limited-liability company and a high-end wealth manager to keep the deals private. Real-estate agents signed nondisclosure agreements and removed photos of the properties from their websites.

His 5,322-square-foot Brushwood Estate sits on a 6-acre lot and dates back to the 1920s.

At 5,322 square feet, the Brushwood Estate features six bedrooms, five baths, and two half baths, according to Amy Graff of SF Gate. Inside are high-beamed ceilings and picture windows; outside are lush trees, a private dock, and a hot tub. There's also a 2,293-square-foot guesthouse.

The estate has had several owners throughout the years, including a novelist, several socialites, and a philanthropist who used to host Oscar de la Renta shows on the property.

The other property Zuckerberg bought is the $22 million Carousel Estate.

Situated on 3.5 acres, it features eight bedrooms, 9 1/2 bathrooms, high ceilings, and a wood-burning fireplace. Promotional materials for the property say it "exudes 'Old Tahoe' ambiance,"according to Business Insider's Nick Bastone.

The Carousel Estate is separated into three living quarters, but it is connected by "breezeways" and is all under one roof.

Outside, it boasts 200 feet of private waterfront, with a "marina style" pier that can accommodate yachts over 50 feet long and an outdoor patio to overlook the lake, Bastone wrote. There's also a caretaker's home on the property.

Between the two properties, Zuckerberg owns 600 feet of Lake Tahoe private waterfront.

But that could soon expand — he's reportedly in talks to acquire a third property across the street. It is not clear whether Zuckerberg will keep the housing on the two properties or will opt to tear it down and start fresh, Business Insider's Megan Hernbroth reported.
