NFL POWER RANKINGS: Where Every Team Stands Halfway Through The Season

$

James Harrison

Another week, another big shake-up on the fringes of the NFL playoff race.

All six teams ranked 9th to 14th in our rankings last week lost.

The result: A big, heaping clump of teams ranked 10th to 26th that are, for all intents and purposes, the same. This playoff race is going to be insane.

Click here to see the rankings >

Once again, here's how we came up with them.

We took our rankings from last week and moved teams up and down based on the following criteria:

  • A win: up 2 spots
  • A loss: down 1 spot
  • A loss by 10+ points: down 2 spots
  • A win against a top-5 team from the week before: up 2 spots
  • A win against a top-12 team from the week before (aka, a playoff team): up 1 spot
  • Covering the point spread: up 1 spot
  • A one-loss record: up 2 spots
  • A one-win record: down 2 spots
  • A winning record: up 1 spot
  • A losing record: down 1 spot

1. Atlanta Falcons (#1 last week): Beat the Eagles

Record: 7-0

Biggest thing we learned this week: Their run defense is getting better (which was their one weakness early in the year). They held Lesean McCoy and Mike Vick to 92 rush yards.

2. Chicago Bears (#4 last week): Beat the Panthers

Record: 6-1

Biggest thing we learned this week: The offensive line isn't getting any better. They've allowed 11 sacks in the last two weeks.

3. Houston Texans (#2 last week): Bye

Record: 6-1

Biggest thing we learned this week: Nothing!

The flooding experienced last night in the Cooper Village and Stuyvesant Town housing complexes on Manhattan's east side was unprecedented.

The waters have receded for now, but devastation left by the rising East river is clear.

Garages remain flooded, and the 14th Street ConEd substation — which powers much of downtown Manhattan — remains offline, possibly for up to a week.

Booz & Co. just came out with its annual ranking of the world's 1000 biggest R&D spenders, which includes a survey of more than 700 senior R&D executives asking them what companies are the most innovative in the world.

Only two of those voted most innovative were among the top ten spenders on research last year.

Barry Jaruzelski, the Booz senior partner who put the report together, says that over the past eight years, they've found "no statistically significant relationship between how much you spend on R&D and how you perform over an extended period of time."

Five Psychological Disorders Named After Disney Characters

$

peter pan cartoon on the clock

Remember those bedtime stories that were read to you as a kid, and those Disney movies you watched?

Turns out, there are some real psychological disorders and personality types that get their names from those characters.

Peter Pan Syndrome

Peter Pan is the boy who won’t grow up. Does that accurately describe a person in your life? If so, they may have Peter Pan Syndrome. It’s not a syndrome officially recognized by the World Health Organization, but some studies have shown that it does exist. It’s characterized by emotional immaturity and an unwillingness to take on responsibilities. It is more common in men than in women (who can suffer from “Wendy Syndrome,” i.e., acting like mothers to their partners and others).

Sleeping Beauty Syndrome

Sleeping Beauty is the story of a 16 year old girl who pricks her finger on a spinning wheel and falls into a deep sleep, only to be woken by a prince’s kiss years later. Real life Sleeping Beauties might suffer from Klene-Levin Syndrome, a rare neurological disorder characterized by periods of excessive sleep and altered behavior. During an episode, the patient becomes very drowsy and sleeps for the majority of the day and night. They will only wake up to eat or go to the bathroom. These episodes can last up to months at a time, inhibiting the ability to work or go to school.

Rapunzel Syndrome

“Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair!” Just don’t eat it. Rapunzel Syndrome is an intestinal condition that results from people eating hair, a disorder known as trichophagia. They swallow so much that, over the course of years, the hair accumulates, resulting in a giant hair ball in the stomach or small intestine called a trichobezoar. Occasionally, this mass can wrap around organs and cause perforations. People can’t digest human hair, so the trichobezoar must be removed surgically. Rapunzel Syndrome is very rare, and only about 24 cases have been reported. If you’ve got a weak stomach, I don’t suggest looking up pictures of the hair ball. (Seriously. Don’t do it.)

Sandy

After spending the day watching Sandy on the news yesterday, most of us here in Manhattan's West 70s were left feeling fortunate. Aside from a few gusts of wind, and a smattering of rain, we didn't see too much weather at all.

Judging from the news this morning it was obvious the storm was far worse than we could see from our windows here, so I went out as the sun came up to see what Sandy wrought.

From Central Park West, through the park, down to midtown, to see that dangling crane at One57, and up along the East River it's an amazing cross-section of what had happened throughout the night.

When I left my apartment at just before 7:00 a.m. this morning it looked like the Upper West Side of Manhattan had been spared

But a block away in Central Park it was a totally different story

The awning from an entrance somewhere, had blown up Central Park West and lodged itself behind the wall to the park

Hippos Take Desperate Measures To Get Through Dry Season

hippos tanzania

It's the end of the dry season in the Selous Game Reserve in southern Tanzania, one of the largest conservation areas in the world, and rain is expected any day.

The 21,100-square-mile park is dusty and yellow, and most of the rivers that run through it have become sand beds.

The park's resident game, which includes buffalo, elephants, baboons, impalas, and warthogs, deal with the lack of water in different ways. For the Selous' hippos, that means wallowing in what little water they can find.

While staying at Beho Beho, a lodge in a remote region of the park, a guide took my tour group to see the hippos at their pool in the Msine River, which still contains a little water.

What I saw next was incredible.

Disclosure: Our trip to Tanzania, including travel and lodging expenses, was sponsored by the Tanzania Tourist Board, The Africa Adventure Company, Singita Grumeti Group, Coastal Aviation, Qatar Airways, Tanzania National Parks, and Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority.

The Msine River is one of several that runs through the massive Selous Reserve. It was mostly dry when I visited in late October, except for a small bend that's fed by a spring.

Our guide led us about 100 feet from our safari vehicle to a spot above the river bank. I could hardly believe my eyes -- there were more than 100 hippos wallowing below.

Hippos spend their days keeping cool in the water or mud since they have sensitive skin and lack sweat glands.

Ghosts, haunted homes, murders, blood, and screaming all tend to be common themes in scary movies. But which films have used these elements the most successfully?

In honor of Halloween, we thought it would be appropriate to round up the highest-grossing horror films of all time.

The major scary movie franchises, such as "Scream," "Saw," and "Paranormal Activity," are all on the list, but which movies in the series were the most popular?

*The following 20 movies are ranked in ascending order according to U.S. gross totals.*

20. Saw II (2005): $87 million

"Saw II" is the most successful film from the "Saw" franchise, which includes seven movies. It starred Donnie Wahlberg and Beverly Mitchell, with Tobin Bell playing the villain, Jigsaw.

19. Scream 3 (2000): $89.1 million

"Scream 3" is part of the four film "Scream" franchise. The movie stars Neve Campbell, David Arquette, and Courteney Cox. Arquette and Cox were married less than a year before the movie's release.

18. The Haunting (1999): $91.4 million

This late '90s film is a remake of the 1963 film. It starred Liam Neeson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Owen Wilson.

The 20 Best Cities In America For Trick-Or-Treating This Year

Trick-or-treat

Halloween is here, and kids around the U.S. are eager to fill their buckets and bags with enough candy to last them— well, until the end of the week, we hope.

But before they can hit the streets, parents will probably want to know where their kids are planning their trick-or-treat routes.

Zillow recently named its 2012 list of the 20 Best Cities To Trick-or-Treat, and we've got them here, along with some of the best candy in each city.

Zillow took into account average home value, population density, Walk Score (how walk-friendly a city is) and local crime data. With this information in mind, Zillow determined the cities that will provide "the most candy, with the least walking and safety risks."

Let the looting begin.

#20 Baltimore, Maryland

Best Baltimore Neighborhoods: Homeland, Roland Park, Cedarcroft, Hampden, Lake Walker

Walk Score: 64

Population Density: 16,069

Average Home Value: $219,800

Sweet City: Despite the funny name, Wockenfuss Candies are a Baltimore and Maryland state staple. Sink your teeth into their "harvest mix" candy, gummy pumpkins, caramel apple candy corn, or actual candy apples (including one covered in crushed Oreos).

#19 Virginia Beach, Virginia

Best Virgina Beach Neighborhoods: Great Neck, Thalia, Kempsville, Kings Grant, Cape Story by the Sea

Walk Score: 41

Population Density: 1,976

Average Home Value: $194,200

Sweet City: Popcorn balls used to grace many of the candy stashes of trick-or-treaters gone past. Jody's Gourmet Popcorn still brings the spirit of Halloween with its popcorn. They stock sweet popcorn like cinnamon toast and chocolate toffee drizzle, and carry Halloween funfetti-colored popcorn in October.

#18 Cincinnati, Ohio

Best Cincinnati Neighborhoods: Mount Lookout, Hyde Park, Oakley, Clifton, Mount Adams

Walk Score: 59

Population Density: 3,628

Average Home Value: $123,100

Sweet City: The BonBonerie will spook you with their Halloween-themed Bump In The Night cake, petite chocolate "boo" cupcake, and bloody finger cookies. They also make very intricate catered desserts.

globe night epcot

What Hurricane Sandy did to New York could be nothing compared to future storms.

An OECD report from a few years ago warned that by 2070, assuming rising sea levels, bigger storms, and continued coastal development, New York City will have $2.1 trillion in assets and nearly 3 million people exposed to major flooding.

And New York City isn't even the most at-risk city—that would be Miami, Florida. Big cities in China, India, and around the world are also extremely exposed.

The report recommend significant investment in flood and storm protection for all coastal cities.

#20 Alexandria, Egypt

$560 billion in exposed assets and 4.4 million in exposed population are threatened by a 1.6 foot rise in sea level by 2070. The average elevation is 16 feet.

Note: OECD estimated exposure in 2070 assuming rising sea levels, bigger storms, and coastal development.

#19 Virginia Beach, USA

$600 billion in exposed assets and an unknown population are threatened by a 1.6 foot rise in sea level by 2070. The average elevation is 15 feet.

Note: OECD estimated exposure in 2070 assuming rising sea levels, bigger storms, and coastal development.

#18 Qingdao, China

$600 billion in exposed assets and an unknown population are threatened by a 1.6 foot rise in sea level by 2070. The average elevation is 105 feet.

Note: OECD estimated exposure in 2070 assuming rising sea levels, bigger storms, and coastal development.

10 Computer Crooks Who Have Secretly Made Your Life Miserable

$
0
0

albert gonzalez

Computers don't hack themselves.

Even so, the idea of a "hacker" has changed a lot over the years.

Back in the early days of the Internet, a hacker was often a genius kid getting himself into trouble. (Think the 1983 movie WarGames, starring Matthew Broderick, or 1995's Hackers.) Facebook and other Silicon Valley companies use this curious-tinkerer definition.

But as the Internet grew into the backbone of the economy, the dark side of hacking attracted more sophisticated criminals. Today, a criminal who breaks into computers is often out to steal money. And for good reason. Some of the world's top cybercrooks could be hauling in $100 million a year, some experts say.

In the last few years, a new hacking trend has arrived, too, known as "hacktivism." This is a type of hacking meant to protest a company or government's policies. They might try to take down a company's website or steal and expose information. While their intentions may be noble, some of these hacks have ended up being as dangerous to the public as the ones conducted by organized crime.

No. 10: Kevin Mitnick

Kevin Mitnick was a genius kid hacker. By the time of his arrest in 1995, he was he was the most-wanted computer criminal in the United States.

He hacked into IBM, Motorola, NEC, Nokia, Sun Microsystems and Fujitsu Siemens, Pacific Bell, FBI, Pentagon, Novell. He even managed to wiretap NSA agents, the story goes.

Mitnick served five years in prison, but as an adult turned his life around to become a good-guy hacker. He's now hired by companies to help them set up their security systems. And he's written a couple of books, too.

Impact: He made hacking cool for a lot of other genius kids who went on to write their own viruses and break into systems. But he did turn his life around to become a better role model.

No. 9: Adrian Lamo

Adrian Lamo's name was etched into hacker history after he broke into systems belonging to the New York Times, Yahoo, Microsoft, and MCI Worldcom.

He was arrested in 2003, sentenced to six months of detention at his parents' home, two years of probation, and $65,000 in restitution.

Lamo would make a lot more news, particularly after he told federal authorities that Bradley Manning, a soldier, was responsible for leaking hundreds of sensitive U.S. documents to Wikileaks.  Manning was arrested and Lamo faced national criticism by WikiLeaks supporters and fellow hackers for his decision.

Impact: His decision to out Manning polarized the hacking world, potentially making it difficult for other hackers who want to break ranks with their peers.

No. 8: Gary McKinnon

Gary McKinnon is a British hacker accused of causing more than $700,000 in damage to U.S. military systems in what U.S. prosecutor called the "biggest military computer hack of all time".

He has been fighting extradition for seven years and faces up to 60 years in a U.S. jail if he were to be tried and found guilty.

McKinnon, 46, is autistic. He admits hacking into Pentagon and NASA computers under the pseudonym "Solo" but said he was looking for evidence of UFOs. Earlier this month, Britain has refused to release him into U.S. custody.

Impact: The case has set a precedent for countries to ignore extradition treaties. It has also raised questions about the treatment of hackers with disabilities.

gap jesus

Just in time for Halloween, Appinions tracked the 10 most influential brand ambassadors ... from beyond the grave.

This list answers the burning question: Who has more commercial influence on Twitter and the blog world, Jesus or Steve Jobs

Appinions, which recently raised $3 million in funding, uses algorithms developed by Professor Claire Cardie at Cornell over a decade, to measure which individuals' opinions carry the most clout. Appinions digests 100 million opinions from 5 million English-speaking sources (from blogs to Twitter to New York Times articles to speech transcripts to any other written word that appears on the Internet). But it doesn't just measure frequency of mentions. Appinions looks at the context of the opinion and the impact it had on a surrounding audience (in the form of retweets, reblogs, and articles written).

And it turns out that it isn't just the living who rule conversation on the web.

Ten Ways We Can Help Keep NYC From Drowning Under Water

$

Manhattan Future

The best scientific evidence shows that global climate change is caused by burning fossil fuels (oil, coal, and natural gas), which emit carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

These greenhouse gases act like a bubble around the Earth, trapping heat in, and in turn, causing temperatures to rise on the planet's surface. This phenomenon can be observed through shrinking glaciers, thawing of permafrost, rising sea levels and, yes stronger storms

See how we can beat climate change >

Superstorm Sandy brought unprecedented levels of flooding to areas across the Eastern seaboard. New York City and the Jersey Shore were particularly hard hit. In Manhattan, a record-breaking storm surge reached 14 feet, shuttering one of the largest transit systems in the world.

Although climate change did not cause the storm, a growing number of researchers say that climate change increases the severity of hurricanes, including stronger storm surges like the one in Manhattan. This on top of rising sea levels, which will leave many cities, including New York, partially underwater, means just one thing: To save our cities, we need to slow climate change.

To moderate the effects of climate change we must start by lowering greenhouse gas emissions, which involves investing in clean and renewable energies.

Renewable energy is energy that comes from natural resources such as sunlight, wind, tides and geothermal heat. Unlike oil, these energy sources won't run out (although some are highly unpredictable) and carbon-neutral, so they don't contribute to climate change.

We aren't just talking wind turbines and solar panels, though. People around the world are developing innovative and sometimes strange ways to decrease their dependence on oil and gas.

Wave Snakes
use the natural up-and-down motion of waves to generate electricity.

Location: Portugal

The 460-foot long, British-made floating tubes represent the world's first commercial-scale wave-power stations.

The snake-like power farms, which were first launched off the northern coast of Portugal in 2008 from the town of Aguçadoura, are an original concept in clean energy design.

Using the natural up-and-down motion of waves, the stations are able to convert enough electricity to power more than 1,000 homes.

The Wind Blimp is equipped with spinning blades to catch wind and generate energy.

Magenn Power Inc. developed its first wind blimp prototype in 2008. The MARS (Magenn Air Rotor System) is essentially an extremely lightweight wind turbine that is anchored to the ground by a tether. Helium is used to lift the blimp, which is equipped with spinning blades to catch wind, generating energy. The electricity is then transferred by the tether to either a power grid or batteries.

MARS has several advantages over other wind systems due to its size, weight, and the ability to operate in very light wind speeds. The blimp is transportable, easily deployed, and well-suited for off-site or remote locations. The floating wind turbine also has the potential to produce electricity at under $.20 per kWh versus $.50 cents to $.99 cents per kWh for diesel.

Archimede is the first solar power plant to use molten salts as a heat transfer fluid to store energy from the sun.

Location: Syracuse, Sicily.

On July 14, 2010, Italian utility Enel unveiled "Archimede," the world's first solar power plant to use molten salts as a heat transfer fluid. The system contains 30,000 square meters (320,000 square feet) of parabolic mirrors that concentrate solar rays onto 5,400 meters of high heat-resistant pipes that carry the fluid molten salt. The fluid is then collected in special tanks and used to produce steam, which eventually contributes to electricity generation.

The salts — a mixture of sodium and potassium nitrate — are an extremely efficient heat transfer mechanism. Unlike synthetic oils used in traditional concentrating solar plants, molten salt can work at much higher temperatures (up to 550°C instead of 390°C). The salts store enough energy to keep the plant generating power at night or on cloudy days, which is a common limitation of many renewable energy sources.

Youth unemployment is rising steadily in the EU as the economic crisis in Europe deepens.

The latest data reveals an EU-wide youth unemployment rate of 22.8 percent, up from 21.7 percent a year ago as those under 25 continue to lose their jobs to the economic slowdown.

Meanwhile, the politics of the crisis are becoming more intense, and thousands have taken to the streets in countries like Spain, Portugal, Greece, Italy, and even France in recent months to voice their anger with government austerity measures that have exacerbated the unemployment issue.

As of yet, however, the countries with the highest youth unemployment rates – Spain and Greece – are doing little to put the brakes on austerity.

Goldman Sachs tower

Two days ago, we told you that Goldman Sachs' tower in Jersey City -- the tallest building in new Jersey and home to the bank's tech and back-office operations -- was just inches from being inundated by waves from New York Harbor.

The tower sits on the Jersey City waterfront at sea level, and took the full force of Hurricane Sandy as she came ashore on the Jersey coast to the South. In preparation, Goldman's office operations staff had placed a gigantic wall of white sandbags all around their temple of capitalism.

The only question was, how bad would the damage be?

We visited the tower on Tuesday morning, and this is what we saw.

The Goldman tower is in the Southeast corner of Downtown Jersey City, on the river at the mouth of the harbor. Right in front of the incoming hurricane, essentially. (Why Goldman chose to build such an important structure at sea level is an open question.) It sits across from Battery Park City and Wall Street in Manhattan, where Goldman's official HQ is.

Monday morning: The center of the hurricane has passed but we're still within its radius. The Goldman tower is the silver building in the background. This view is from Montgomery St. and Marin Blvd., to the West, and already you can see that the tower is in a section of the city that was cut off by the surging tide. Also, you can see by the traffic lights that the power is out.

This is actually an extremely unusual view of the building -- because no lights are on. The tower is completely dark from the power outages. Some office towers in Jersey City's financial district maintained power by parking huge generators on tractor-trailer flatbeds in their parking garages. Goldman didn't do that. Note that every tree has been tripped of its fall foliage in the wind, but that none of the windows on the building appear to be broken.

George Lucas Is Still The Proud Owner Of Skywalker Ranch

George Lucas may have sold the rights to Star Wars, but he's still the proud owner of the 4,700-acre Skywalker Ranch.

The director has spent around $100 million developing the impressive property north of San Francisco since 1978. Although he doesn't live there (at least as of 2002), Lucas uses the land as a retreat, as well as work and studio space.

Now with his $4 billion windfall from selling Lucasfilm, perhaps Lucas will spend more money building his dreamland.

Hot off his 1977 hit Star Wars, director George Lucas began acquiring land north of San Francisco in 1979.

Now-47,000 acres, his ranch is located in the coincidentally named Lucas Valley.

Lucas called it Skywalker Ranch, after the movie protagonist. The property also contains a Lake Ewok, along with other Star Wars themed places and things.
