BANK OF AMERICA: Buy these 8 US stocks poised to soar in the first quarter of 2021— and avoid these 2 at all costs

Summary List Placement

This week, the S&P 500 has hit record highs above 3,800, surpassing Bank of America's year-end target of 3,800 for the S&P 500 for 2021.

The target was included in the bank's wider US equity outlook for 2021 released on November 24, 2020. The S&P 500 was sitting at 3,635 at the time of the report and the estimate offered a 6% upside.

"Our 2021 year-end target for the S&P 500 is 3800 (+6% upside),"  said Bank of America, equity analyst Savita Subramanian. "The recovery is intact and the world likely re-opens in the 2H, but a lot of optimism is priced in already on vaccine/recovery. Vaccine execution risk, delayed fiscal stimulus and longer lockdowns are risks."

The move toward the target was expected. Subramanian said it was likely the S&P 500 would move up and down over the course of the year. A December report from Bank of America analyst Stephen Suttmeier said there was the potential to reach 3,830 and 3,835, based on bullish sentiment in early 2021.

Infact, Suttmeier doesn't rule out the S&P 500 topping 4,000 in 2021. But he estimates this is more likely to happen in early to mid-2022.

"As we move into 2021, the weight of the evidence is bullish," Suttmeier said. "Broadly positive trend, breadth, seasonality, volume, credit, momentum and macro indicators support continued upside into 2021. However, the only thing we have to fear is the lack of fear itself."

Just as investors are bullish, so are the Bank of America equity analysts on stocks for 2021, emphasizing that 70% of S&P 500 stocks are trading at a higher dividend yield than the 10-year Treasury note.

Bank of America analysts in November predicted that  the 10-year yield will rise to 1.35% by the third quarter of 2021.

"Following a collapse in interest rates, the TINA (there is no alternative) argument attracted many income oriented investors into stocks and this argument still prevails, where the S&P 500 dividend yield is close to 4x the 10-year yield," Subramanian said.

These are two reasons analysts are bullish on stocks for 2021.

Firstly, the S&P 500 dividend yield is three times the 10-year yield, with the S&P 500 dividends set to increase in 2021.

And secondly is that earnings are nominal and participate in inflationary upside, which would protect investors as inflationary risks run higher, Subramanian said.

Now the new year has kicked off, Bank of America has released a report on January 4 outlining the stocks investors should bet big on for the first quarter of 2021.

"These high conviction ideas are based on our views of potential significant market and business-related catalysts that we think will affect these stocks in the quarter," said Bank of America analyst, Anthony Cassamassino.

The list aligns heavily with Bank of America sectorial and key themes outlined in the November outlook report alongside the S&P 500 target.

The analysts are overweight financials, energy, health care, while underweight on staples, communication services and real estate. While their key themes focus on value and small-cap stocks as well as themes around the post-COVID world, the global to local ecosystem and inflation.

The stock list is meant to be used as short-term plays for the first quarter of the year, with eight stocks to buy and two to sell. Many of these stocks have catalysts around upcoming earnings and analyst days related to the first quarter financial season.

"Securities are intended to stay on the list for one quarter, although some may be chosen for the next quarter's list. We will publish performance quarterly," Cassamassino said.

Here is the complete list of Bank of America's highest conviction ideas for the first quarter of 2021 and the two to avoid at all costs.

Stock List

Prices as of December 31.

1. Citigroup Inc

Ticker:C

Sector: Banks

Rating: Buy

Price target: $79.00

PT upside: 30%

Catalysts: Progress in regulatory remediation, expectation of reserve releases in the first half of the year, US consumer expansion and stabilization of cyclical revenues.

Analyst commentary:"In light of our macro teams' view of a solid economic rebound in 2H21 and the 10-year reaching 1.50%, we think financial stocks will have a strong 2021 - and 'value within value'  stocks like Citi are poised to outperform."

Source: BofA

2. Foot Locker

Ticker:FL

Sector: Apparel & footwear

Rating: Buy

Price target: $55.00

PT upside: 39%

Catalysts: Fourth quarter financial results.

Analyst commentary:"We also believe FL should be a significant 'vaccine' beneficiary which should help accelerate a rebound in mall traffic (FL traffic comps have been tracking down DD thru COVID). FL should also benefit from another round of government stimulus programs (incl. $300 additional unemployment benefits & $600 stimulus checks) as the initial government relief helped drive record F2Q21 same-store sales."

Source: BofA

3. Kansas City Southern

Ticker:KSU

Sector: Transportation

Rating: Buy

Price target: $228.00

PT upside: 14%

Catalysts: Earnings results in January, savings via PSR-related operational improvements and improving shareholder returns.

Analyst commentary:"Kansas City Southern represents one of the best growth stories among the North American Class I Rails, while concurrently demonstrating accelerating progress on its precision scheduled railroading (PSR) initiatives."

Source: BofA

4. ServiceNow

Ticker:NOW

Sector: Software

Rating: Buy

Price target: $650.00

PT upside: 17%

Catalysts: Partner calls suggest expansion activity, product line rollouts and public sector momentum could provide revenue upside.

Analyst commentary:"ServiceNow screens well in our 4M's framework for software investing - Market, competitive Moat, Management strength, and Margin potential. With a combined market share of only 7% in these markets and a formidable competitive moat stemming from 1) large installed base of over 6,200 mid and large enterprise customers (including 80% of F500), 2) distribution channel of ~4,600 sales and marketing personnel, and 3) breadth and depth of the workflow automation offering, spanning ITSM, ITOM, employee workflow, and customer workflows, we believe a long runway exists for 25%+ revenue growth."

Source: BofA

5. Occidental Petroleum

Ticker:OXY

Sector: Oil & gas

Rating: Buy

Price target: $29.00

PT upside: 64%

Catalysts: The firm has the option to accelerate the transfer of value from debt to equity through assets sales planned in first half of the year, management conservative on cash break-even view and an extension of debt maturities through 2023.

Analyst commentary:"Looking forward the investment case has changed: 'new' OXY is a recovery play and one of the most levered stocks to an oil recovery that is the BofA base case. Our analysis that views value for the US oils on an ex-growth DCF basis, suggests OXY is fairly valued at strip - no different than the majority of the US oils. But in OXY's case, the equity story stands on one of the highest quality portfolios of the US oils. At $50 WTI in 2021 & $52 from 2022 we see upside of >70% above current levels."

Source: BofA

6. T-Mobile

Ticker:TMUS

Sector: Telecommunications

Rating: Buy

Price target: $155.00

PT upside: 16%

Catalysts: Fourth quarter results, analyst day and a potential subscriber net additions pre-announcement.

Analyst commentary:"T-Mobile plans on hosting an investor day during or around 4Q results expected in February. We expect the company to update investors on its synergy targets, longer term subscriber and financial expectations, and its 5G strategy. We believe T-Mobile will report solid 4Q results and share upbeat 2021 guidance. Importantly, we expect the analyst day will be a material catalyst for the stock. Investors have been waiting since April 2018 for an update on the long term targets for the company and the results so far imply that there is material upside to the prior targets."

Source: BofA

7. Tapestry Inc

Ticker:TPR

Sector: Retail

Rating: Buy

Price target: $40.00

PT upside: 30%

Catalysts: Earnings results, e-commerce growth

Analyst commentary:"We have been impressed with TPR's ability to rebuild sales and grow margins through the pandemic. We think all eyes are now on the recovery and we expect the Coach and Kate Spade brands to be reopening beneficiaries. Increased use cases like vacations, weddings and return to work should spur outsized handbag demand. We expect Kate's optimistic, whimsical product to position it win share in a post-COVID environment."

Source: BofA

8. Raytheon Technologies

Ticker:RTX

Sector: Aerospace & defense

Rating: Buy

Price target: $80.00

PT upside: 14%

Catalysts: Recovery newsflow, earnings results and improving aircraft cycles.

Analyst commentary:"In our view, RTX is well-positioned to experience a multiple re-rating from early recovery signals (such as vaccines and increasing air traffic)."

Source: BofA

9. Hexcel Corporation

Ticker:HXL

Sector: Aerospace & defense

Rating: Underperform

Price target: $40.00

PT downside: -18%

Catalysts: Earnings results, further cuts to widebody expectations and decelerating F-35 production rates.

Analyst commentary:"While we appreciate HXL's cost management actions and strengthened liquidity profile, we do not anticipate upside to HXL earnings or the stock's multiple. Both likely will remain under pressure until we start to see a pick-up, or at least stabilization, in widebody production rates. BofA sees widebody demand materially lagging narrowbody demand in the recovery. BofA expects widebody demand to recover to 2019 levels post 2025e. In the meantime, we see material pressure on Hexcel's cash flow and balance sheet."

Source: BofA

10. Iron Mountain

Ticker:IRM

Sector: Real estate

Rating: Underperform

Price target: $19.00

PT downside: -36%

Catalysts: Earnings results, reversal of reopening trades

Analyst commentary:"We argue that investors have overestimated the positive impact of a Covid 19 vaccine and return to the office for Iron Mountain's core storage business. Meaningful return to the office for most US workers will be slow and is unlikely to gain momentum until 2H21 based on recent surveys and conversations conducted by BofA Global Research. Iron Mountain's valuation is supported by its dividend, which the company is synthetically funding through borrowing, asset sales and deep cost cuts. We see limited opportunity to incremental asset sales following the recently announced transaction that represented 4% of owned facilities and 14% of the company's previously estimated asset value. Finally, with the Iron Mountain's $375M cost cutting initiative approaching its end we expect greater focus on top line pressure from volume declines."

19 things that will help your new cat feel at home, according to cat rescuers and a veterinarian

Summary List Placement
  • Make your cat's transition to their new home as seamless as possible by stocking up on the essentials before their arrival.
  • Cats need supplies like a litter box, food, toys, and scratchers to make them feel safe, encourage healthy habits, and provide them with stimulation.
  • We consulted with two cat rescue organizations and veterinarian Dr. Andrea Moore of Pinnacle Animal Hospital in California to determine the most important supplies to have when bringing a new cat home.

The day you bring home your new cat is full of joy. But while you may be ready for snuggles and play from the moment your kitty arrives, most felines aren't as excited about moving day. Just when they were getting used to the shelter or foster home — bam — here comes another transition. And cats, they aren't the best at dealing with change.

Preparing for the arrival of your new cat ahead of time will help smooth their transition to your home. While it's a no-brainer that cats require a litter box and food, new cat owners may not realize that items like scratching posts, cat trees, calming pheromones, and toys can reduce stress and provide your pet with an enriching environment.

With the help of four experts, we've come up with a list of essentials to have when you bring a new cat home. For a veterinary perspective, we consulted Dr. Andrea Moore, owner and medical director at Pinnacle Animal Hospital in San Jose, California. Staff at two cat rescue organizations also lent their expertise on how to transition a cat to a new home: Danielle Carr, shelter manager at Town Cats in Morgan Hill, California, and Libby Farel-Friedman and Lindsay Franušić, supervisor and assistant manager of adoption programs, respectively, at the Humane Society of Silicon Valley (HSSV) in Milpitas, California.

Here are 19 pet supplies to have on hand when you bring your new cat home:

A cozy carrier for your cat's freedom ride and beyond

Mr. Peanut's Double Expandable Carrier, available at Amazon, $56

A cat carrier is mandatory for bringing your cat home from the shelter, said Franušić. We love Mr. Peanut's refined, comfortable tote, which can unzip to expand to almost three times the size of a regular carrier, making it more comfortable for long travel days.

A calming pheromone diffuser to decrease stress

Feliway Classic Diffuser, available at Chewy, $35.99

To help decrease stress and unwanted behaviors like urine spraying that go with it, both Moore and Carr recommend using a calming pheromone like Feliway during your cat's first weeks at home. Feliway mimics the F3 facial pheromones cats deposit when rubbing their cheeks against surfaces in order to mark them as safe.

Earthquake putty to keep knickknacks, vases, and picture frames from becoming playthings

Quakehold! Museum Putty, available at Amazon, $3.66

Adhering your knickknacks to shelves and tables using earthquake putty ensures that your favorite picture frame or vase won't end up in pieces on the floor. "When you actually get a cat into your home, you find that they love to explore and get on top of things," said Franušić, adding that putty was a lifesaver for her.

A safe place for your cat to do their business

Nature's Miracle Oval Hooded Litter Box, available at Chewy, $32.99

When it comes to a litter box, all of our experts agree that simple is best. You want a box your cat can use "without having to do any tricks," said Moore. And even though self-cleaning litter boxes are convenient, Moore advises against them because the noises they make can frighten cats. At the Humane Society of Silicon Valley, Farel-Friedman said they recommend using a simple uncovered litter box. If you prefer your box to be covered to reduce smells or prevent your dog from getting inside, buy one like Nature's Miracle Oval Hooded Litter Box, which has a removable lid that can be added later on.

An unscented natural litter to make using the litter box appealing

World's Best Multiple Cat Unscented Litter (14 lbs), available at Chewy, $14.45

Moore avoids dusty litters, which can cause respiratory issues, as well as perfumed litters with a strong scent. All three of our shelter experts like litters made of natural materials like corn or grass, and Carr's favorite litters are made from pine wood. "I think they're really efficient at neutralizing odors and are really easy to scoop," she said. For more ideas, check out our guide to the best natural cat litter.

A flat, wide food dish to prevent whisker fatigue

Dr. Catsby Cat Food Bowl, available at Chewy, $19.95

For cats with sensitive whiskers, brushing up against the side of a food or water bowl can cause pain and make eating stressful. To prevent "whisker fatigue," Dr. Moore suggested using a flatter dish without steep sides.

Nutritious dry and wet food that your cat will love to eat

Hill's Science Diet Dry Cat Food for Indoor Cats, available at Chewy, from $15.99

While many cats prefer dry foods, they are high in carbohydrates and calories. Feeding a diet that includes wet food can help to maintain weight and overall health, according to Moore. "Wet food is great for cats because it provides more moisture," she said. "It's especially important for males because you want them producing urine so they don't have urinary issues."

Franušić and Farel-Friedman recommended Hill's Science Diet, which comes in several varieties for cats with different needs. There are plenty of other high-quality options, including Nom Nom, a human-grade monthly cat food delivery service.

Irresistible treats for training and high-stress situations

Inaba Churu Lickable Puree Natural Cat Treat, available at Chewy, $17.96

"We use Churu for clicker training and it works wonders," said Carr. Clicker training, a form of positive-reinforcement training that marks correct behaviors with a distinct clicking sound, is an excellent way to teach tricks and address behavior challenges in cats. Churu is great for stressful situations, too. "We have cats who are super stressed and we give them Churu, and it works so well to distract them from what's going on," said Carr. For more ideas, see our guide to the best cat treats.

Tasty dental treats to help promote a happy, healthy mouth

Feline Greenies Natural Dental Care Treats, available at Chewy, from $2.35

Keeping your cat's mouth clean is essential to its overall health. "Ideally, you should try to teach your cat to have its teeth brushed," said Moore. But if that proves too challenging, dental treats are the next best thing. She also recommended using a water additive for stress-free dental care. For more options, check out our guide to the best dental products for cats.

A reflective breakaway collar to hold your cat's ID tags

ROGZ Reflective Cat Collar, available at Amazon, from $9.95

If your cat goes outdoors, they need a breakaway collar that will come undone if they get caught on a tree branch or fence, said Moore. We like this durable reflective collar by Rogz, which is the top pick in our guide to the best cat collars.

Stainless steel ID tags to make sure your cat gets home safely

GoTags Stainless Steel Pet ID Tags, available at Chewy, $7.95

Even if your cat is microchipped, ID tags engraved with their name and phone number can help them make it home safe and sound. If your cat is indoor-only, Moore said they don't need to wear a collar or ID tags. Instead, microchip your cat so that they can be easily identified if they escape.

A comfy harness and leash set for taking your cat on a walk

Rabbitgoo Cat Harness and Leash Set, available at Amazon, from $14.98

For indoor cats, the outdoors is a fantasy world of sights, sounds, and smells that many find delightful. According to Moore, leash training "is a safe way to have [a] cat outside and a good activity for the cat and owner to do together." But because being on a leash is not a natural behavior for cats, guardians need to take the time to acclimate their cat to the leash.

A brush for removing excess hair and preventing hairballs

Safari Self-Cleaning Slicker Brush, available at Chewy, from $14.99

Cats are fastidious, and in the process of grooming, they consume a lot of hair. For long-haired cats, especially, "brushing is really helpful to remove the loose hair that is ready to shed that may get matted if not removed," said Moore. A good cat brush like the Safari Self-Cleaning Slicker Brush can help remove the excess hair and may reduce the frequency of hairballs.

A scratching post for your cat to claw

On2Pets Skyline Sisal Cat Scratching Post, available at Chewy, $44.99

"Cats scratch as a scent marker, to help with their nails, and to relieve stress," said Moore. Plus, your cat will be less likely to scratch your furniture if they have other options. This cat scratcher from Max & Marlow includes a 26-inch scratching post plus two attached toys. For more ideas, check out our guide to the best scratching posts.

A cat wand for chasing, pouncing, and play

GoCat Da Bird Pull Apart Wand, available at Petco, $8.95

"The best toys are the ones where you can interact with your cat. Playing with them helps you to bond better," said Farel-Friedman. Cat wands are a classic kitty favorite, and Carr recommended both Da Bird and Cat Catcher by GoCat. See our guide to the best cat toys for more options.

An interactive food puzzle toy to stimulate your cat’s hunting instincts

Petsafe Egg-Cersizer, available at Chewy, $5.99

"I think food puzzle toys are great," said Carr. "They're really good for cats who are overweight and for cats who are overstimulated. It's more natural, too, because [it mimics the way] cats have to work for their food in the wild." Moore suggested feeding kibble out of interactive food puzzle toys as well as — or instead of — treats.

Regular flea treatment to keep the itches away

Seresto Flea and Tick Prevention Collar, available at Chewy, $57.98

Flea control is important regardless of whether a cat is indoor-only or goes outside. Most flea treatments are topical, but Seresto also makes a flea collar that many cat owners and veterinarians like. Not all cats will be comfortable wearing a flea collar, but for those that tolerate it, Moore said it's a good option.

A cardboard floor scratcher with tracking balls to promote independent play

Bergan Turboscratcher Cat Toy, available at Petco, $14.99

All of our experts agreed that there is no such thing as too many scratchers. Carr likes the Bergan Turboscratcher which has a ball in the frame. "Cats get their scratch on while playing with the balls inside," she said. "They can play and entertain themselves so even if you're not home they have stimulation."

A cat tree tower for climbing, scratching, and play

Armarkat Classic Cat Tree, available at Petco, $55.06

"We definitely recommend cat trees," said Farel-Friedman. "They not only provide cats with the ability of choice, but they also provide them with exercise and stress relief." Dr. Moore agreed: "You want to have vertical space, especially people who have a small living area." The ideal tree has built-in scratching posts and plenty of spots to snuggle up. That's why we like the classic cat tree from Armarkat, which is the budget pick in our guide to the best cat trees.

Summary List Placement

As the job application process has become even more virtual, the application pool grows more competitive, noisy, and faceless.

While your resume markets your skills, qualities, and experiences like a tailored menu, the cover letter follows a less distinct code of production. It leaves space for you to make a memorable mark, infuse your personality, and forge some kind of personal connection while rounding out your applicable experiences — but it also offers a lot of ways to mess it all up. In other words, the cover letter can make or break your application.

On top of that, while you can usually submit the same resume you spent hours tweaking to similar jobs, the same can't be said for cover letters. Each new job posting will likely require the patient — and potentially heart-wrenching — labor of crafting a new letter.

If you want expert advice and guidance on how to create the kind of cover letter that gets pulled to the top of the pile, you might want to invest a little time into a cheap online course. Some are taught by HR veterans and professors who can tailor your application to perform well with screening software, and while it can seem like a bit of a time commitment, you'll at least know for certain that your approach to applying for jobs is the right one (over hours spent pouring over Google search results).

Below are five courses that will help you excel in writing cover letters:

Meet the 8 bankers handling the biggest media deals, from Warner Music's IPO to Univision's stake sale

Aryeh Bourkoff latest headshot

Summary List Placement

It's been a stomach-churning year in media, with the pandemic providing a black swan event that has challenged even the smartest players.

Pivoting is the business plan du jour, and the telecom, media and tech sector bankers have been busy coming up with ways to seize the day for some and rescue plans for others.

In TMT, which refers to the telecom, media and tech sectors, merger and acquisition sector activity swelled to $387 billion in 2020, up 77% versus the prior year, according to Refinitiv.

Some players, like Jeffrey Katzenberg's Quibi, were dead on arrival after soliciting a huge amount of investment from banks. Others like cinema chain AMC Entertainment had to borrow money to stay alive. Univision and Verizon decided it was the right time to put assets on the block. Special purpose acquisition companies, or SPACs, will bring many smaller media players to the public markets with bankers playing Pied Piper.

Investment bankers are used to working around-the-clock hours at breakneck speed, but this past year has put best-in-class financial engineers to the test, and the pace of dealmaking won't be slowing down anytime soon.

Business Insider talked to senior executives across the spectrum to identify the go-to media bankers in the sector to watch.

LionTree's Aryeh Bourkoff

They say all roads lead to Rome, and the same could be said of Aryeh Bourkoff, who sits at the nexus of the most headline-grabbing media transactions (and a lot more that happens behind closed doors).

Bourkoff, who built his own investment bank LionTree after years at UBS, is fond of quoting big thinkers in his annual looking-ahead letter.

Bourkoff's company was behind deals such as ViacomCBS' sale of book publisher Simon & Schuster to Bertelsmann's Penguin Random House; and audio firm Wondery's sale to Amazon

LionTree advised on other agreements in the audio space with E.W. Scripps' sale of Stitcher to SiriusXM.

And in Spanish-language media, Bourkoff helped crunch the numbers on the Univision sale of a majority stake to ForgeLight, Searchlight, and Televisa. He also helped Jeffrey Katzenberg sell the Quibi library, which was picked up by Roku.

In his most recent year-end letter, Bourkoff shared Marcus Aurelius' observation that "Most of what we say and do is not essential," adding that media players must make decisions that are essential. Bourkoff, who is both down-to-earth and cerebral, told readers that if there's a wave, it's time to grab the surfboard.

Goldman Sachs' Kurt Simon

If there have been seismic, landscape altering deals then Goldman Sach's Kurt Simon was part of the conversations that created them.

Simon advised on AT&T's acquisition of Time Warner and its subsequent defense against activist investor Elliott Management at the beginning of 2020. He also advised Disney on its acquisition of Fox.

Goldman was also involved in some huge deals in 2020, including acting as lead advisor to S&P in its purchase of IHS Markit, information provider. The all-stock deal was valued at $44 billion.

Simon is vice chairman of the Investment Banking Division and co-chairman of the global Technology, Media and Telecom (TMT) Group. He also serves as a member of the Investment Banking Senior Leadership Council.

Simon joined the firm as a partner in 2018 after 16 years at JP Morgan, most recently as global chairman of mergers and acquisitions. Before that, he was head of the TMT investment banking practice.

He earned a BA from Duke University in 1987 and an MBA from the Wharton School of Business of the University of Pennsylvania in 1991.

Goldman Sachs' Sam Britton

Sam Britton has been busy the past 12 months with a lot of tech and media deals such as the sale of eBay's StubHub to Viagogo for $4 billion and the $7.5 billion sale of videogame company ZeniMax to Microsoft.

He's had some activism business to attend to as well. Britton was key to Twitter's activism advisory and investment by Silver Lake and also was part of eBay's activism advisory with Elliott and Starboard.

The San Francisco-based Britton, who's been in the business for 25 years, described tech M&A as being "on fire" in 2020.

"This is a business where experience begets more activity, and there's a virtuous circle there," he said of Goldman's ability to attract significant business.

He noted that companies are looking at both an IPO track as well as strategic acquirers as they turn to 2021.

"We've seen either the inclination to make those phone calls go down a little bit, or the success rate of those phone calls go down a little bit, in part because the IPO — the public alternative — is very, very attractive, whether through a SPAC or whether through a conventional IPO."

Allen & Co.'s Nancy Peretsman

Nancy Peretsman has been a fixture of the media deals for decades, but she's still close to the grassroots when it comes to spotting what's around the corner.

Peretsman is one of the most prominent women in finance, with decades of experience at boutique firm Allen & Co., where she is a managing director. Over the years, she's worked on Google's IPO, was a banker for AOL, and advised News Corp. in its purchase of Dow Jones.

In the past 12 months, Peretsman has advised on Fox's acquisition of Tubi, a $500 million deal; Twitter on its agreement with activist investor Elliott Management; Magic Leap on its private placement; and News Corp.'s sale of News America Marketing to Charlesbank Capital Partners.

Outside of media, Peretsman advised Deliveroo on its private placement financed mostly by Amazon.

"2020 was a year of extraordinary activity raising capital for a whole group of exciting companies. It's a new form of online media business," she said of the new crop of direct-to-consumer companies.

Peretsman also advised Graham Holdings on the sale of an audio venture to Spotify and Vimeo spinout from IAC. "It makes more sense to spin it off into the capital markets than to sell it," she said, of what will likely be a common theme this year.

Max Herrnstein, Morgan Stanley

Max Herrnstein has been in the media business for over 30 years as an investment banker, venture capitalist and strategy consultant. He currently chairs the Global Media & Communications Group at Morgan Stanley, having worked on a range of deals in digital media, advertising agencies, sports, music and broadcast and satellite communications.

In 2020, he worked on Disney's $11 billion bond offering in May, followed by Warner Music Group's $2.2 billion initial public offering in July. Herrnstein closed out the year as an advisor to Spanish-language media giant Univision, which sold a majority stake to Searchlight Capital Partners and Forgelight. The deal closed in December.

He has an A.B. and MBA from Harvard University.

Moelis & Company's Navid Mahmoodzadegan

Navid Mahmoodzadegan is always in the midst of multi-billion dollar media M&A activity. As co-president and a founding partner of Moelis & Company, he's worked on a host of deals this past year, from Univision's stake sale to AMC Entertainment's exchange offer and capital raise to ION's sale to E.W. Scripps.

Among other deals, he was a financial adviser to Expedia on its $1.2 billion PIPE (private investment in public equity) and related financings, worth $4 billion.

Mahmoodzadegan's expertise crosses broadcasting, cable, publishing, entertainment, satellite and digital media sectors. He spent six years at UBS, most recently as the global head of media investment banking, and was a member of its Investment Banking Department Americas Executive Committee. He began his investment banking career at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette.

Mahmoodzadegan holds an A.B. from the University of Michigan (Phi Beta Kappa) and a J.D. from Harvard Law School (magna cum laude).

Evercore's Jason Sobol and Nathan Graf

Evercore duo Jason Sobol and Nathan Graf had a busy year advising Red Ventures on its acquisition of CNET, which ViacomCBS sold for $500 million after buying it for $1.8 billion in 2008.

Among other deals, the two advised on the Scripps family's interest in E.W. Scripps' acquisition of ION Media for $2.65 billion in September. Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway made a rare media deal, agreeing to pour $600 million into the mix to help the purchase along.

On a smaller scale, Evercore also advised Edmunds, which received an equity investment from Carmax in January 2020. Sobol also advised on McClatchy's sale out of bankruptcy court to Chatham Asset Management.

With winter well underway, you've likely had to pull on your gloves to leave the house at lease once — whether it's to run errands, shovel the driveway, or participate in some outdoor activities. If those cheap knit gloves you've had for ages are looking a little worse for wear, it's time to consider picking out a dependable pair of winter gloves.

Winter gloves come in many varieties, including thermal, waterproof, and tech-friendly, so it's important to pick out a pair that fits your intended use. Whether you're planning a fun ski trip, taking work calls for long hours in the elements, or you just need something warm enough to handle quick trips outside, these are the gloves that will keep frostbite at bay.

We did the research to find the best winter gloves you can buy to keep your hands nice and toasty for this year's winter and for many more winters to come.

Here are the best winter gloves:

Updated on 1/8/2020 by Maria Del Russo: Updated prices and links. Added a new pick for our "best gloves for outdoor activity," as our previous pair wasn't fully waterproof. We're currently in the process of retesting for this guide, and will update once we do.

Best unisex gloves overall

If you are looking for thermal gloves that are affordable and warm, the Ozero Thermal -30°F Suede Leather Winter Gloves are your best bet.

Pros: Affordable, warm, true to size, waterproof, unisex, good grip

Cons: Fingers of gloves may be slightly too long for those with small hands

Sizing options: S-XL

The Ozero Thermal -30°F Suede Leather Winter Gloves feature five layers of materials to keep your hands warm and dry in below-freezing temperatures. The outer layers of polar fleece and waterproof TPU provide thermal retention and moisture-wicking, while the middle firm sponge layer keeps the shape of the glove intact.

The inner layers include Heatlok insulated cotton and TR thermal cotton, which both ensure your hands stay warm  — even when the temperature drops down to  -20°F. The gloves also feature a windproof cuff at the wrist that prevents cold air from creeping inside.

The deerskin suede leather gloves are made with a solid grip, so they're the perfect winter accessory for partaking in cold weather activities or even just driving on a brisk winter morning. The gloves come in sizes small to extra large, so they should fit hands of all sizes.

Best gloves in men's sizing

The Carhartt Men's W.P. Waterproof Insulated Gloves are an affordable pair of gloves that are insulated, waterproof, and made to last.

Pros: Affordable, waterproof, insulated, moisture-wicking

Cons: Slightly too bulky for working outside with small materials

Sizing options: S-XXL

There's a reason why the clothing brand Carhartt is synonymous with durable outdoor apparel, as it has been producing high-quality outerwear and accessories since 1889. Carhartt's Men's W.P. Waterproof Insulated Gloves are no exception to the rule.

The gloves are made with a long-lasting polytex shell that features a FastDry lining to wick away moisture as you use them, so you can say goodbye to sweaty palms.

One thing to keep in mind: Some users say they aren't the most practical option if you plan on working outdoors in cold temperatures, because they are too bulky to pick up small items such as nuts and bolts.

Best gloves in women's sizing

The North Face Women's Etip Gloves will keep your hands warm and let you use your phone at the same time.

Pros: Tech-friendly, warm, good grip, variety of colors to choose from

Cons: Not waterproof

Sizing options: XS-L

If you want to be able to check your phone without removing your gloves, try The North Face Etip Gloves. These tech-friendly gloves are perfect for those who still like to stay connected while enjoying the great outdoors.

Your hands will stay warm and toasty as you scroll through Facebook, thanks to the gloves' five-finger touch capability. The gloves also feature extra silicone grip on the palm, so your hands won't slip as you scroll, ski, or shovel.

The sturdy gloves use a lock clip system, so you can store them together and you'll never have to worry about losing one. There are several colors to choose from including purple, gray, and pink.

Best for outdoor activities

The unisex Flylow John Henry Gloves are breathable, durable, and will keep your hands warm and dry during winter adventures or outdoor chores alike.

Pros: Breathable, water-resistant, durable construction, leather palms for rock scrambles or cold-weather belaying, stretchy wrist for big hands

Cons: Not touchscreen compatible, run small

Flylow gloves have a bit of a cult following in mountain towns, thanks to their comfortable fit and quality construction. The brand's unisex John Henry Gloves are one of the best options out there for early morning uphill skiing, winter running, and snowshoeing.

The stretchy woven material on the back of the hand allows these gloves to be breathable without letting the cold in. The palms and thumb joint are constructed of pre-treated pigskin leather which not only helps insulate your hands but also adds a layer of durability if you have to scramble over rocks on a winter trail run.

Water-resistance is key when looking at thermal gloves for winter sports. The problem: Many waterproofing materials compromise the breathability of fabric. While Flylow's John Henry gloves aren't technically waterproof, the treated leather provides a barrier between your hands and the snow, so they have to get repeatedly soaked before that icy water penetrates to your hands.

Generally, the John Henrys will keep your hands warm when you're in single digit temps — and after that, they can be used as an (albeit bulky) liner in big thermal mitts. People with large hands will love the stretchy wrist opening to more easily get their big mitts into, as well as the leather pull tab to help slide the gloves on. We recommend sizing up as they run a bit small. — Rachael Shultz

Best work gloves

If your job requires you to work outdoors during the winter, the Ergodyne ProFlex 817WP Thermal Waterproof Utility Gloves have the dexterity you need.

Pros: Waterproof, insulated, breathable liner, extra cushioning

Cons: Tricky sizing

Sizing options: S-XXL. Some users have noted that sizing was not consistent and recommend checking the size chart before buying.

Made with 40g 3M Thinsulate insulation and a Hipora water and windproof breathable liner, the Ergodyne ProFlex 817WP Thermal Waterproof Utility Gloves are highly-rated gloves for those who work outside in the cold winter months.

The padded spandex back and neoprene knuckle pad offer cushioning for extra comfort, while the terrycloth panel on the thumb allows you to wipe sweat from your brow as you work. The flexible gloves have the full range of dexterity that you need when you are on the job. They are also touchscreen-capable on the thumb and index fingers.

Best affordable women's gloves

Super warm gloves don't have to be super bulky, and the Il Caldo Thick Winter Drive Gloves prove it.

Pros: Warm, machine-washable, touchscreen tips

Cons: These gloves are warm enough for city life, but certainly not suited for the Arctic Circle

Sizing options: One size fits most

Just because the weather has taken a turn for the worse doesn't mean that your sense of style has to do the same. Il Caldo's Thick Winter Drive Gloves are not only extremely warm, but also quite elegant.

Lined with both cotton and wool, these gloves are surprisingly warm and fantastic at insulating your hands against the snow and wind. There are a number of different styles available, but all feature unique details that allow these gloves to stand a cut above the rest when it comes to aesthetics. Whether it comes in the form of faux fur lining or the touchscreen finger tips, the Il Caldo offerings combine form with function.

Thanks to the wool and cotton construction, you can run these gloves through the wash without worrying about ripping them to shreds. I was pleasantly surprised to find that even after a few cycles, these gloves did not shrink, nor did they lose their ability to keep my hands cozy. The gloves also feature touchscreen tips, though, like many other gloves, this functionality is somewhat touch and go (no pun intended). — Lulu Chang

Best Gore-Tex gloves

If you're looking to survive subzero conditions with all your fingers intact, Burton Gore-Tex gloves are the way to go.

The best invention of the last few decades may just be Gore-Tex. The waterproof, breathable fabric has the unique ability to block liquids while allowing water vapor to pass through, making for a dry, comfortable environment. When it comes to keeping your hands cozy and protected in seriously harsh conditions (wind, snow, sleet), one of the best options is the Burton Gore-Tex glove.

Pros: Incredibly warm, waterproof yet breathable, Sticky Icky palm technology allows for great grip

Cons: None to speak of

Sizing options: S-XL

Gore-Tex makes up the membrane of this glove, which ensures that it's waterproof, but Burton also includes an integrated Thermocore layer of insulation for extra warmth. The outside of the glove is made from a double layer of DryRide Ultrashell fabric, which is windproof and waterproof, but will still let your hands breathe.

If you're looking to do work in these gloves, that's possible too thanks to the Sticky Icky technology in the palms that allow you to grip onto ski poles, shovels, or your significant other's hand.

One of my favorite things about the Burton Gore-Tex glove is that it's essentially three gloves in one. The fleece liner on the interior of the glove is removable, which means that you can either wear just the fleece, just the outer shell, or put them both together for days when it's especially chilly out. If you opt to wear the fleece on its own, you can take advantage of its touchscreen technology (though to be fair, I've often had trouble using my smartphone without fully de-gloving).

Sizes are available from extra small to extra large, so folks of all genders will be able to buy and enjoy a pair. — Lulu Chang

Here's the pitch deck a former P&G brand manager used to raise $1.25 million to build the 'Olay of food' with his keto startup

William Uprising Food

Summary List Placement

Health and wellness direct-to-consumer brands have become hot in recent years, and a 2-year-old food startup is hoping to ride the wave.

Uprising Food, which makes low-carb breads and crisps, has raised $1.25 million in Series A funding, the company said. It also got a distribution deal with Midwest grocery chain Meijer to help the direct-to-consumer brand expand to retail.

The company was founded by former Procter & Gamble brand manager William Schumacher, his sister Kate Schumacher, and Blue Oven Bakery founders Mark and Sara Frommeyer.

Uprising claims its products are higher in fiber and nutritional value than other breads because it uses ingredients like egg whites, MCT oil and almond flour. Its flagship product is a bread called the Keto Kube, made with baking powder rather than yeast.

Read more: Investors from Greycroft, Lerer Hippeau, and others say these 20 direct-to-consumer startups will take off in 2021

The startup has aimed at followers of the keto diet — a high-fat, low-carb diet that's become popular among people looking to shed weight or regulate health conditions like diabetes and epilepsy. But it plans to use the funding to broaden its base, Schumacher said.

"I want to build the Olay of food and be the food brand of the masses, but I want to do it in a way that is beautiful, inspiring, and really lifts people up — just as Olay did with skincare," Schumacher told Insider.

Uprising intends to use the new funding to hire more people, boost its sales and marketing, and eventually expand to new categories like chips, pasta and cookies, and build a subscription model.

Like brands such as Banza, Beyond Meat, and Magic Spoon, Uprising Food has benefitted from people getting more health-conscious. The health food market is expected to reach $557.6 billion in global sales in 2024, according to a report from Research and Markets, and there's room for the market to grow, per Nielsen.

Even so, Uprising will face growing competition as it looks to expand to other categories like pasta and cookies, where consumers have plenty of choices.

Schumacher told Insider that the company's sales had been growing 10x year-over-year since its launch, though he declined to give specifics. He said that the ultimate goal was being acquired by a food conglomerate.

Nick Brien, former Dentsu US and Americas CEO, said that he decided to invest in Uprising because he believes that the food industry is ripe for disruption.

"Having worked for the likes of General Mills, Nestlé, Kellogg, and P&G in my agency life, I have seen how many [of them] have really focused on health and wellness for the masses," he said.

The funding round was led by Trousdale Ventures as well as Brien. Food entrepreneurs Pressed Juicery's Hayden Slater, Health-Ade's Daina Trout, and Sugarfina's Rosie O'Neill and Josh Resnick also participated.

Below is Uprising Food's fundraising deck.

Uprising wants to make healthy foods for the masses.

It aims to expand beyond bread and play in the health, weight loss and nutrition categories.

The company caters to health-conscious consumers, from those seeking gluten-free and dairy-free alternatives to paleo and keto diet enthusiasts.

The company wants to be the 'Olay of food' and bring healthy food to the masses. It also takes inspiration from ice cream maker Halo Top.

Uprising claims its products are higher in fiber and nutritional value than competitors.

Uprising sees itself as catering to health, taste and the masses.

The company is expanding into its second product category, chips.

With the latest funding, Uprising intends to boost its sales and marketing and expand to new categories.

The company seeks to bring down its customer acquisition costs while trying to boost recurring revenue from subscriptions.

The company targets those are extremely conscious about their health and those who follow a healthy lifestyle but are not militant about it.

It estimates that the first group is a $134 million opportunity.

The company thinks the second group is a bigger opportunity at $8.4 billion and plans to reach it through retail stores.

Uprising claims that its sales have been growing 10x year-over-year since its launch.

Ultimately, Uprising hopes to get acquired like Halo Top and Annie's.

The company's founders are former P&G brand manager William Schumacher, his sister Kate Schumacher, and Blue Oven Bakery founders Mark and Sara Frommeyer.

The best rowing machines

Summary List Placement
  • An at-home rowing machine allows you to reap the benefits of a high-cardio, low-impact workout that helps strengthen muscle and burn calories.
  • There are typically four variations of rowing machine: Water resistance, air resistance, magnetic resistance, and hydraulic resistance, each of which offers unique benefits and drawbacks.
  • Our top pick, the Concept2 Model D Indoor Rowing Machine, features durable construction, comfortable design, and a smooth-running air resistance flywheel.
Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

There are few machines capable of delivering the same kind of calorie-burning, full-body workout as an at-home rower. In the span of just 30 minutes, you're able to enjoy a low-impact, high-cardio exercise that's fit for people of any age or fitness level. As long as you know how to properly row, this versatile workout can not only serve as a quality complement to a pre-existing routine but it can also stand on its own as a prime source of weekly exercise.

As at-home fitness continues to be the norm, rowing machines are more popular now than ever — and are increasingly becoming staples in people's home gyms. If you don't like running on a treadmill or aren't particularly keen on stationary bikes, a rower is the next best thing — and to some, it's even better.

But not all rowers are the same. Not only are there a variety of resistance types and rower sizes but there are others designed to be easily stowed as well as a newer crop of smart rowers that come with their own touchscreen and selection of on-demand, streamable classes. In other words, there's plenty of variety.

To find the best of what's around, we tested a number of machines that span what's available. Our goal was to find those that delivered a serious cardio workout while proving to be a valuable addition to anyone's home gym setup — and we came away with a strong list of favorites. At the end of this guide, we've included some tips on how to shop for a rower, as well as a rundown of our testing methodology

Here are the best rowing machines:

Updated on 1/8/2020 by Rick Stella: Updated the intro for relevancy, added more to the slide on our testing methodology, changed the Ergatta Rower to best motivating rowing machine, checked the availability of each recommended rower, and updated the prices and links where necessary.

Best rowing machine overall

The Concept2 Model D Indoor Rowing Machine brings the gym to your home with its sturdy build, smooth gliding action, comfortable design, and superb quality.

Pros: Smooth gliding operation, ease of assembly, large size to accommodate tall people

Cons: Pricey and requires a bit of space (9 feet by 4 feet) but worth it

The Concept2 Model D Indoor Rowing Machine features solid aluminum front legs, steel rear legs, a flywheel with air resistance, and a maximum user weight capacity of 500 pounds, making it our top pick.

Essential for executing powerful and uninterrupted strokes, the Model D 's flywheel has a damper for adjusting its air resistance, granting you complete control of the resistance yourself. The harder and faster you row, the more wind the flywheel generates and the more drag you'll feel.

With an air resistance rowing machine, you'd expect a bit of noise, however, the Model D runs fairly quiet. Although not completely silent, it's quiet enough for rowers to listen to music or watch television at a normal volume during workouts.

The easy-to-read performance monitor (PM5) tracks stroke rate, calories expended, distance, pace, and watts. It has several built-in programmable workouts and games to motivate you during a workout. The rower' also quick and easy to assemble and disassemble, and can be taken apart and rolled for storage.

Although the Model D isn't inexpensive, it's a worthwhile investment in your health and comes with limited five- and two-year warranties.

Best motivating rowing machine

The Ergatta Connected Rower combines the rush of video game racing with the fitness benefits of a full-body exercise to deliver one of the most interactive rowing machines available.

Pros: Motivating video game-inspired workout platform, beautiful design, features a folding design for easy stowing

Cons: Expensive

Like similar smart fitness equipment from brands such as Peloton or NordicTrack, the Ergatta Connected Rower utilizes a giant on-board screen to display its on-demand workouts and exercises. But unlike its aforementioned peers, the workouts aren't led by an instructor belting out the next movement or exercise but are instead comprised of a series of video game-inspired routines that prove just as motivating as those high-energy classes.

What this means is that the Connected Rower pits you against the machine for its goal-based plans and interval workouts, while also allowing you to compete against other Ergatta users in simulated races. Regardless of the event, the software delivers an addictive experience that drives you to want to continuously do better. Fitness trackers found a way to gamify daily fitness and the Connected Rower follows the same path.

The physical rower is an aesthetic wonder, too. Made of Cherry wood and featuring a traditional water rowing mechanism, Ergatta clearly intended for the rower to be more than just a means for getting fit — it wanted the rower to also pleasing both in terms of look and feel. The water rowers soothing swoosh of water adds to an already enjoyable experience, as well.

Perhaps its one downside is the fact the rower's not cheap. But since few interactive workout machines like are, this isn't entirely surprising. After an initial $2,199 price tag for the machine (and a $199 shipping cost), there's a recurring $27 fee for access to the library of on-demand classes (which is also par for the smart workout machine course).

In all, the Ergatta Connected Rower delivers a full-body workout disguised as an interactive gaming experience — and it's one of the most enjoyable we've tested. -- Rick Stella, health and fitness editor for insider reviews

Best connected rowing machine

The Hydrow Rowing Machine aims to be the Peloton of at-home rowers with an immersive content experience that delivers a complete, full-body workout.

Pros: Extensive library of motivating classes and rowing events, delivers a full-body workout, features quiet, electromagnetic resistance

Cons: Expensive

Connected fitness equipment continues to grow in popularity — and for good reason. Not only does it provide an interactive method for keeping fit but the classes and streamed content itself serve as powerful motivation to push on. In the rowing space, one of the best to deliver the kind of connected content fans of NordicTrack and Peloton have come to love is Hydrow and its aptly named rower, the Hydrow Rowing Machine

Built with an aluminum and steel frame on a flat, anthracite polymer body, the Hydrow is a durable and sturdy rower. Attached to the front of the machine is an HD touchscreen where you're able to access its library of interactive workouts. These workouts include everything from on-demand routines, open swim-style free rows, whole body-specific workouts, and live classes.

The machine also comes with the ability to read your heart rate via an included monitor and features a whisper-quiet electromagnetic resistance. Hydrow does well to not only provide classes that highly motivate you to finish a row but it also creates a competitive environment where you can see how you rank with other global users or anyone else using your machine.

With a sticker price of $2,245 and a recurring monthly fee of $38 for access to the classes, it's certainly not cheap — but few connected fitness machines of this caliber ever are. It's worth the investment. -- Rick Stella, health & fitness editor for Insider Reviews

Best dual-resistance rowing machine

NordicTrack's RW900 combines the stimulation of instructor-led courses with the versatility of both air and digital resistance to offer one of the best at-home rowing experiences.

Pros: Interactive workouts, easily folds up, utilizes a dual resistance design

Cons: Expensive, iFit membership costs $39 per month (after the first free year)

Though NordicTrack may be more well known for its stationary bikes and treadmills, the company's offered high-quality row machines for quite some time — and its RW900 is the brand's crown jewel. Featuring a 22-inch HD touchscreen display, a library of interactive workout classes led by real trainers, and a fold-up design, this rower is worth every bit of its $1,699 price tag.

What makes the rower particularly impressive is its dual resistance. So, while rowing away during a class, an instructor has the ability to digitally adjust the resistance based on how they want you to row. But if it's either too much or you want to kick your workout up a few notches, there's the ability to manually adjust the air resistance. An easy-to-use air control is located on the wheel which allows for quick adjustments, even between strokes.

Like any workout machine with a massive touchscreen attached to it, the RW900 shines with what it offers in terms of workouts via its iFit interactive platform. Be it in studio routines from its roster of iFit trainers or more calming sessions in real locations around the world, the options are incredibly versatile. There are even yoga and cross-training courses to mix things up a bit.

The rower also offers stat tracking which tells you how long you row each week along with calories burned and row wattage and allows for up to four different users on the same iFit profile. All new purchases also come with a free year of iFit (which is typically $468 per year or $39 per month), so you won't have to worry about a monthly recurring charge for access to the library of content for at least the first year. -- Rick Stella, health & fitness editor for Insider Reviews

Best budget rowing machine

At a very reasonable price, the Stamina BodyTrac Glider 1050 Rowing Machine offers a versatile workout with its independently moving arms and smooth hydraulic resistance for continuous rowing action.

Pros: Low price, independent arms for a full range of movement, and ease of assembly and folding

Cons: Resistance declines as piston heats up during long rowing sessions; short warranty (90 days for parts/one year for frame)

The Stamina BodyTrac Glider 1050 Rowing Machine is small but mighty — and an excellent value at $120. Although it's compact and quiet, this hydraulic resistance rowing machine provides a big workout with a smooth-gliding padded seat and separate arms for a full-body workout.

What makes the BodyTrac Glider so special is its versatility in arm movements. Unlike many models where you pull a single handle attached to a chain or cord, this erg has two arms that allow for a full range of motion and mimic real boat-rowing movements.

This means you can row forward or backward, move your arms in circular directions, pull the handles close together for a conventional stroke, or hold the grips apart to exercise different arm, shoulder, and upper back muscles. Because the arms operate independently of each other, you're able to focus a workout on each arm individually.

Sturdy with a steel frame and aluminum center beam, the BodyTrac Glider supports up to 250 pounds. It assembles easily and folds up for storage, as well. The single hydraulic piston/cylinder is located under the unit for convenient adjustment with a manual control dial.

The machine is able to maintain a variety of consistent levels of resistance for roughly 30 minutes of hard rowing. As with most hydraulic rowers, fluid in the hydraulic piston heats up, which decreases resistance. When this happens, you'll need to pause and increase the resistance setting. Always make sure you turn the control dial itself and not the heated piston/cylinder. Another downside to hydraulic resistance models is the chance of the piston leaking oil.

The BodyTrac Glider also has a simple and easy-to-use monitor, which features more functions than you'd expect on a machine this affordable.

Best water resistance rowing machine

The elegant WaterRower Natural Rowing Machine uses water resistance to make you feel like you're truly sculling on the open water.

Pros: Gorgeous appearance, meditative whooshing sounds, and simulation of open-water rowing sensations

Cons: Expensive, included monitor is fine but limited

For an indoor rowing machine, the WaterRower Natural Rowing Machine comes closest to recreating the sensation of actual outdoor rowing as it features a flywheel that pushes through water in a heavy-duty tank. It even delivers soft and soothing swooshing sounds of water while rowing, too.

In addition to controlling resistance through your strokes — the harder and faster you row, the greater drag the flywheel encounters — you can increase resistance by adding water to the tank. In essence, the more water there is, the heavier the drag on the flywheel, and the harder your workout.

Maintenance of the machine is easy, too. Just fill the tank using the included siphon pump and drop in a chlorine tablet every six months. There's no need to empty the tank, even before storing it. Although the machine doesn't fold up, it's easy to store upright and the weight of the water stabilizes the erg in an upright position.

You can assemble the frame without any tools, and the instructions come on an included DVD. Because wood expands and contracts due to environmental conditions, you may need to tighten the bolts every once in a while.

With a comfortable, stable seat that rolls smoothly along dual rails, you'll experience an excellent workout where you can keep track of distance, time, and calories burned as displayed on the S4 monitor. The rower comes with a three-year warranty on its parts, as well as a five-year warranty on the frame.

Best magnetic resistance rowing machine

Quiet, smooth, and stable, the Sunny Health & Fitness Magnetic Rowing Machine provides varying magnetic resistance levels for a wide range of workouts.

Pros: Economical with eight levels of resistance, easy to fold and store

Cons: Only okay cord quality, rail might be too short for tall people

The reasonably priced Sunny Health & Fitness Magnetic Rowing Machine offers quite a few convenient features: a comfortable, cushioned seat; anti-grip handles; an LCD monitor that tracks stroke counts, time, and calories burned; and eight levels of knob-adjusted magnetic resistance for various intensities.

Level two is good for warming up before progressing to levels three and four for a more vigorous workout. Levels five and higher are more intense, perfect for long cardio-building rowing sessions. Level seven is for endurance and all-out sprints while level eight offers the greatest resistance (and hardest workout).

Able to support up to 250 pounds, the Sunny's Magnetic Rowing Machine has a 48-inch-long rail in which the padded seat rolls smoothly and quietly. The rower is able to easily fold up for convenient storage and even has built-in wheels. It's easy to assemble and relatively compact, taking up minimal space when folded up and very little square footage when open.

How to row with good form

To get the most out of your workouts and avoid injury, remember that proper rowing form consists of an initial drive phase followed by a recovery phase. Here's how to execute it:

  • For the drive, start first with your legs and once those are extended and your back is vertical, use your arms to pull the handle into your body. Your finished position should be your legs fully extended, the rower's handle pulled into your body with your wrists in line with your forearms. From here, you'll move onto recovery.
  • The first step of recovery is to straighten your arms and pivot your body from your hips, making sure to avoid hunching forward or bending backward. This fluid motion will then have your legs flexing in until your shins are completely vertical.

Finally, don't think of this exercise as a race. Focus on perfecting your form, not on how fast you can row.

How to shop for a rowing machine

With many different kinds of rowing machines out there, it's important to examine each model to choose one that best fits your needs and keeps you motivated and injury-free. You'll want to consider features like:

Resistance: Different types of resistance include magnetic (electromagnets slow the erg's metal flywheel), air (wind from the spinning flywheel creates drag), hydraulic (resistance is created by hydraulic fluid in a piston or two connected to the erg's handles), and water (the flywheel pushes against water in a tank).

Size: The machine should be large enough for you to straighten your legs and maintain proper rowing form, yet small enough to fit into your workout space.

Maximum user weight capacity: Models vary in how much they support but many accommodate 220 to 265 pounds or more.

Foldability: Some machines (usually magnetic and hydraulic resistance) fold up for easy storage, while others (often air and water resistance) don't.

Monitor: A monitor or computer tracks information like distance, duration, speed, and/or calories burned while rowing.

Seat: It should be contoured and large enough to keep your backside comfortable while allowing you to maintain proper form.

How we test rowing machines

Each rower featured in this guide went through a testing process to gauge how well it performed across these four categories: Ease of use, experience, reliability, and value. Here's how each category specifically factored into which rowers ultimately made this guide.

Ease of use: Row machines have a naturally low learning curve — the general idea is to just sit down and row. But we know there's more to it than that. Ease of use also refers to the process of setting up the machine set up in your home, how easy it is to get started, whether there's a companion app, and if that learning curve (however steep) dramatically impacts the following category: your experience.

Experience: Working out for fun may seem like an oxymoron but it is important to at least somewhat enjoy the sweat your breaking. Since a row machine delivers a full-body workout, you want one that won't feel like some sort of grueling game of tug of war. Ideally, a proper row machine offers smooth operation, an engaging platform (whether that means it offers digital feedback or is just fluid to use), and is comfortable to use.

Reliability: If the rowing machine you invest in doesn't last longer than a few months, you'll likely be cursing whatever inclination you had to want to buy it. Put plainly, at-home workout machines aren't cheap and the one you ultimately end up spending a large chunk of money on should work and work often.

Value: Value is a mixture of the categories that came before it, as well as some attention to its actual sticker price — but this doesn't mean that more expensive models should be ignored. It's better to spend more money once on a machine that's reliable, easy to use, and delivers a fun workout than to struggle with a different cumbersome budget model every few months.

Reusable cleaning products

Caring about the environment and caring about a clean home doesn't have to be mutually exclusive.

When the movement toward "green cleaning" began, there were very few products that approached the benchmark of being both high-quality and good for the earth. Yes, there was the ol' kitchen mop and the bacteria-infested sink rag, but more often than not, reusable meant repulsive.

Today, it's hard to keep up with the number of items that are working to provide a sustainable way to take care of your home, from long-lasting recyclable sponges to reusable dryer sheets. There are tons of ways you can do your part to take care of the environment without going out of your way or sacrificing the quality of the products you've used in the past.

Here are 11 reusable cleaning products that work well and are good for the environment:

These dryer balls might look a little odd, but their outward appearance isn't interfering with their effectiveness or popularity. The Smart Sheep Dryer Balls are made from 100% premium New Zealand wool and offer the same benefits of disposable dryer sheets (like decreased static), but without the waste. They aid in quicker drying times by creating air pockets between clothes, and they can be infused with essential oils to leave your laundry smelling exceptionally fresh.

I've been using microfiber cloths around my house and in my car for years and cannot even imagine how many paper towels I have saved. These ones are extremely absorbent and are machine washable — meaning they can last you for quite some time, no matter how often you use them. We suggest washing them in this bag that catches tiny bits of microfiber particles to prevent their entry into our waterways.

E-Cloth Window Cleaning Pack

Unless you're a commercial-grade window cleaner, you likely use paper towels to wash your windows — leaving tons of waste that can't even be recycled. These cloths work together to clean glass and windows, ensuring a streak-free shine.

The first thing I noticed about them was how thick and durable they are — more so than traditional paper towels — which is likely why they can hold up to as many as 100 washes. Once you've gotten used to them, it becomes second nature to throw dirty sheets in the top dishwasher rack for cleaning and to keep the clean, ready-to-go sheets under the sink. All in all, it's worth the extra minute or two to feel a bit more responsible.

The Swiffer has swept its way across the country and into the homes, dorms, and apartments of anyone wanting a quick alternative to mopping, but the disposable cleaning cloths can be wasteful. These microfiber cloths fit perfectly on the bottom of the Swiffer to trap dust and dirt and can be machine washed.

The best East Coast ski resorts, plus affordable hotel options for each

best east coast ski resorts

Summary List Placement

You don't have to hop on a plane out West to find great skiing — or snowboarding — in the US. All along the East Coast, from New England down to North Carolina, there are plenty of opportunities to hit the slopes.

Below, we detail our top picks for the best ski resorts on the East Coast, plus the best East Coast ski hotel for each, including:

Eastern ski areas offer a wide variety of terrain that appeals to both novices and skilled skiers and snowboarders alike. From New England's classic runs to the Catskills' family-friendliness trails to the slopes of West Virginia and North Carolina where you'll find far fewer crowds, there are resorts of all types to be found along the East Coast.

Along with sprawling resorts owned and operated by the likes of Vail Resorts, you can also find many family-run resorts dotting New England and upstate New York. These are usually smaller, with fewer bells and whistles, but also tend to be less expensive.

Before you hop in the car for a snowy getaway, keep in mind that there's no guarantee of safety when it comes to travel right now. We always recommend following guidelines from the CDC like wearing masks in public areas, washing hands frequently, and practicing social distancing. If you're wondering if skiing is safe at all right now, the good news is that experts have noted it is a relatively low-risk activity, as long as proper precautions are taken. But there are still potential risks that come with travel to and from ski resorts, as well as hotel stays.

Additionally, there are major changes across the board at resorts this year due to COVID-19. Chief among them are restrictions on capacity to control the number of skiers on the mountain and maintain safe social distancing in lift lines and on lifts. Priority will go to those with passes, but even with a pass, you might need to make reservations ahead of time in order to have access to the mountain. Advanced reservations will generally also be required for rental equipment, lessons, and even dining.

Most importantly, there are fluctuating travel restrictions in place for several East Coast states. Always check state and local guidelines before hitting the slopes and exercise extra caution if you're traveling to or from a hot spot area.

With that in mind, we've rounded up East Coast ski resorts for every type of ski vacation, whether you're looking for a fun family outing or seriously steep hardcore runs. All are conveniently located within a three-hour drive of major metropolitan areas, including New York, Washington, DC, Boston, and Charlotte.

For those looking to make their ski trip into a long weekend, we have also included top hotel picks for each, based on the following criteria:

  1. Since being close to the slopes is primarily what makes for a great ski hotel, all of our top picks offer easy access to the base village and lifts.
  2. Lift tickets and ski hotels can be notoriously expensive. We've kept affordability top of mind and found excellent hotels that won't break the bank. Even during peak ski season, hotel starting rates range from $74 to $159 per night.
  3. Each hotel offers additional amenities that make for a well-appointed stay, such as indoor pools, spas, and great on-site dining, but be aware that there may be some restrictions on amenities due to COVID-19.
  4. All hotels have new COVID-19 policies in place, which we've noted below.

Here are the best East Coast ski resorts, plus the best ski hotels near each, sorted by price from low to high.

Shawnee Mountain - East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania

With its modest-sized mountains and close proximity to New York City and Philadelphia, the Poconos are ideal for a family-friendly winter getaway. Shawnee Mountain is particularly well-suited to children, thanks to a comprehensive kids' program that offers ski and snowboard instruction (also in Spanish) for ages 4 and up. Its two terrain parks cater to all levels: New snowboarders and skiers can safely hone their skills in the Country Club Park, while the more advanced Delaware Terrain Park is a great playground for snowboarders, with an exciting array of jumps, tabletops, rails, and jibs.

The resort's 125 skiable acres feature 23 slopes (one-quarter of which are green runs) and a 700-foot vertical drop. Given its low elevation (1,350 feet) there's 100 percent snowmaking across its slopes, terrain parks, and snow tubing park so you're always assured of snow no matter the weather. Shawnee also offers night skiing from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., which is less expensive ($40) and tends to be less crowded than during the daytime.

Read updates on Shawnee Mountain's season.

Opening day: Snowmaking on the mountain is scheduled to start in mid-November, with the opening day yet to be announced.

Sugarbush Resort - Warren, Vermont

Located in Vermont's scenic Mad River Valley, the massive Sugarbush Resort is actually two mountains in one, with a huge variety in both terrain and trails — 111 in total spread across 581 skiable acres — making it ideal for all levels of skiers. Lincoln Peak is the larger, fancier, and more crowded of the two, with a base area packed with amenities, including restaurants, stores, and lodging. It features a big beginner area for new skiers or snowboarders to work on their skills and multiple easy green runs.

Mount Ellen has more of an old-school, authentic feel and is particularly popular with locals thanks to its wide, winding, well-groomed runs. It's home to Vermont's highest chairlift and a 2,600-foot vertical drop with incredible views of the valley below. An express quad connects the mountains, making it quick and easy to transfer between the two.

Sugarbush is a member of the Ikon Pass program, which allows you access to resorts across the U.S. and Canada, as well as in Europe, Japan, and Australia.

Couples should opt for Standard King rooms, while Standard Queen rooms have two Queen-sized beds and are suitable for families.

Amenities include an indoor heated, saltwater pool, and full-service restaurant with fireplace, and a large deck with a fire pit and mountain views.

TripAdvisor Ranking: 1 out of 8 hotels in Gorham

Booking.com Rating: 9.3 out of 10

Pros: Close to national parks, the hotel features fantastic mountain views and is pet-friendly.

Cons: Some lower-level rooms face the parking lot and the pool is on the small side.

COVID-19 status and policies: The Glen House is currently open and accepting reservations with the following Covid policies in place:

  • Social distancing guidelines must be observed throughout the hotel and there is expanded space between tables for dining.
  • Dinner reservations will be required in advance. Masks are not required to be worn by guests but are encouraged; all staff members will wear masks.
  • There are three levels of housekeeping available, including limited service to restock linens and amenities or drop-off service at your door.
  • The pool and gym will have capacity restrictions and guest use will be limited to one hour.

Canaan Valley - Davis, West Virginia

Just a three-hour drive west of Washington, DC, in the Allegheny Mountains' Canaan Valley, the Canaan Valley Resort is set in a state park in prime ski territory. With a summit elevation of 4,280 feet above sea level (the highest east of the Rockies) and an average annual snowfall of over 160 inches, Canaan gets plenty of natural powder that lasts late into the season.

Beginners are certainly welcome, but the resort's 47 trails favor intermediate and advanced skiers, with 43 percent of its runs black diamonds and 2 percent double black diamonds. Cross-country skiers can take advantage of the 20 miles of trails, while a 1,200-foot-long tubing park and covered outdoor ice rink provide plenty of non-skiing family-friendly fun.

While Snowshoe is West Virginia's better-known resort, Canaan Valley tends to be less crowded and cheaper (2020 prices have yet to be announced) and it's also closer in proximity to Washington, DC.

Opening day: Still to be determined, but historically it's been the second week of December.

Appalachian Ski Mountain - Blowing Rock, North Carolina

Those living in the Southeast don't need to head all the way up to New England to get their skiing fix. North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains are home to several resorts, including Appalachian Ski Mountain, best known for its renowned ski school, the French-Swiss Ski College. Instructors here undergo extensive training in the ski techniques of these two European countries, offering tailored programs to skiers (and snowboarders) of all ages and abilities.

The mountain's 12 slopes range from bunny slopes to black diamonds, plus two terrain parks, all serviced by one double chairlift, two quad chairlifts, and two conveyor lifts. Guests have noted that the mountain is particularly well-suited to newbies, with fewer crowds than nearby Beech Mountain and plenty of easy hills to practice and build confidence.

Thanks to a high-tech snowmaking equipment, Appalachian's peak-season base depths often exceed 100 inches, putting it on par with many Western resorts. Its excellent snowmaking capabilities also allow it to have an extended season, with skiing often running into early April.

And while there's daily night skiing until 10 p.m., on Fridays, Saturdays, and holidays, Midnight Blast Sessions let you ski until the witching hour. Weekday lift tickets are a bargain, at $41 for adults, $32 for seniors and kids ages 12 to 18, and free for those 5 and under with a ticketed adult. If purchased online, the mountain's traditional 8-hour Flex ticket will be good for nine hours.

Wildcat Mountain - Gorham, New Hampshire

When it comes to gorgeous scenery, Wildcat Mountain is regularly ranked as one of the top resorts in the Northeast. Its setting deep in New Hampshire's White Mountain National Forest means there's virtually no development — so no condos, hotels, or sprawling base lodges to spoil the pristine alpine views.

Wildcat also offers the best chance for skiing natural powder: It gets the highest amount of annual snowfall in the area — averaging over 200 inches — and its high elevation and northwestern exposure ensures a longer viable ski season.

This is classic New England skiing, with a mix of challenging steeps, twisty glades, and wide, well-groomed trails across its 225 skiable acres. It's also home to the longest green beginner run in New Hampshire, snaking 2.75 miles down the mountain and offering magnificent views of the Mount Washington Valley.

The base lodge is a no-frills affair with just two dining options, a self-service cafeteria and a low-key pub, and a small retail shop. A mountainside deck with picnic tables lets you spread out and enjoy the views.

COVID-19 status and policies: The Canaan Valley Resort is currently open and accepting reservations with the following Covid policies in place

  • Additional surface and environmental sanitizing measures are in place in guestrooms, public spaces, dining areas, and recreation areas with an emphasis on common touchpoint surfaces and gathering areas.
  • Hand sanitizer stations are located throughout common areas. Social distancing floor-spacing signage is set up at common line-up and gathering areas and signage throughout reminds guests of social distancing policies.
  • There is increased spacing of seating throughout dining areas and lounge areas and buffet service is suspended.
  • Note that the wearing of face masks is encouraged throughout the property, but not required.

For accommodations, there is an increase in the "rest time" of vacant rooms between departures and new arrivals "when possible," and reduced housekeeping service.

Plattekill Mountain - Plattekill, New York

Where many Catskills ski resorts are loud and flashy, with pumping outdoor music, rowdy bars, and $20 entrees on its menus, the old-school vibe of Plattekill is a welcome throwback. This intimate, family-owned resort puts the focus on the sport of skiing (and snowboarding), with 75 skiable acres and 38 trails that range from easy two-mile-long green runs to double black diamonds that are some of the steepest in the East. Advanced and expert skiers will appreciate the rugged terrain and challenge of glades — Plattekill is one of the only resorts in the area that offers tree skiing.

You'll generally find fewer lines here than at competing resorts, partly due to the lack of bells and whistles — there's just a single restaurant/lodge and no onsite accommodation — but also because it's further away from New York City (at nearly three hours), with a less direct driving route.

Read updates on Platekill's season.

Opening day: Plattekill has not announced its opening day, but generally it's the first week of December.

Where to stay at Plattekill Mountain: The Roxbury

Book the Roxbury Hotel starting at $149 per night

In keeping with the retro feel of Plattekill, check into the eclectic Roxbury Hotel, a 15-minute drive from the resort in the town of Roxbury. The boutique property's individually-themed rooms — inspired by TV shows, films, and music of the 1960s, '70s, and '80s — are seriously over the top, with everything from disco balls (think "Saturday Night Fever") to Cinderlla-style pumpkin carriage bathrooms.

Couple-sized Studios with Queen-sized beds are available, while dual-level two-bedroom, two-bathroom suites (like the "Star Trek"-themed Final Frontier suite) are great for families or bigger groups, larger rooms start closer to $250 per night.

TripAdvisor Ranking: 1 out of 1 hotel in Roxbury

Booking.com Rating: 9.4 out of 10

Pros: Unique design concept with friendly staff.

Cons: The over-the-top decor in some rooms isn't for everyone and there is no restaurant on the premises.

COVID-19 status and policies: The Roxbury is currently open and accepting reservations with the following Covid policies in place:

  • An automated reservation system allows for contactless registration, masks must be worn in common areas, and social distancing policies must be followed.
  • In place of the hot breakfast, there are complimentary to-go breakfast bags (cold items only) that can be picked up in the breakfast room.
  • The property has partnered with a local distillery, Union Grove Distillery, to provide guests with hand sanitizer the lobby, common areas, and rooms.
  •  In rooms, many design elements, such as throw pillows, have been removed.
  • All bed linens will be washed at a higher temperature and hospital-grade cleaning products are used.
  • Rooms will be "offline" for 24 to 48 hours before and after each reservation and daily housekeeping service has been suspended.

Hunter Mountain - Hunter, New York

Just 2.5 hours from New York City, Hunter Mountain is known for its party atmosphere, with DJs and live bands blasting music through base camp speakers and crowds of 20-somethings gathering for its festive apres-ski scene. While this season promises to be more subdued given Covid restrictions, midweek is always a far more relaxed time to hit the slopes.

Hunter's four mountain faces and 320 acres of skiing offer plenty of terrain variety, but keep in mind that nearly half of its 67 trails are rated for advanced and expert skiers. There are several nice, long green runs as well, plus a dedicated learning zone where newbies can practice their skills.

Currently, all passholders will receive priority reservations, and individual lift tickets will not be available online until December 8. Hunter is owned by Vail Resorts whose Epic Pass program allows you to ski at all its affiliated resorts throughout the U.S. and Canada, as well as receive priority access to reservations.

Rooms vary in size and shape and feature traditional, period-style wood furnishings and four-poster beds. Classic details include fireplaces and bay windows in some rooms. Those with Queen-sized beds are perfect for couples, while the Family Wing suite features a King-sized bed plus two twin beds.

TripAdvisor Ranking: 3 out of 13 B&Bs in Great Barrington

Booking.com Rating: 9.5 out of 10

Pros: Close to all the town's restaurants and shopping, this beautifully preserved property has plenty of old-fashioned charm.

Cons: There are limited breakfast choices and some guests said the beds were too soft.

COVID-19 status and policies: The Wainwright Inn is currently open and accepting reservations with the following Covid policies in place

  • Face masks are required for guests and staff in public areas and social distancing is mandatory.
  • High-traffic areas and touchpoints are regularly sanitized and hand sanitizers are available throughout common areas.
  • The complimentary hot breakfast is served on the porch outside or inside with two separate morning seatings, and home-baked goods will be individually wrapped.
  • Housekeeping service is not available.
  • The inn follows state and local Covid-19 safety regulations, which in Massachusetts means travel from high-risk states requires a 14-day quarantine or a negative Covid-19 test result within 72 hours of arrival.

The best media streaming sticks and devices

$
0
0
Summary List Placement
  • A streaming device can transform a plain TV or monitor into a smart display that streams shows and movies from Disney Plus, Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, and more.
  • Our top rated streaming device is the Roku Ultra thanks to its easy-to-use interface, 4K video, HDR support, voice control, simple remote, and affordable price.

The world is changing. Gone are the days when a cable subscription was required to watch all the latest TV series. These days, you can find plenty of quality shows on streaming platforms. Of course, the best way to watch these services is on a TV, and there are plenty of devices out there to help you stream your favorites on the display of your choice. Before buying a specific player, however, you'll want to consider a few things.

First, it's important to ensure that the streaming device you pick includes support for the apps you use the most. The most popular services, like Netflix and Disney Plus, are supported on virtually all streaming players, but some services are missing from certain devices.

Next up, you'll want to keep in mind the specs of your TV. Not all streaming sticks and boxes are able to handle 4K resolution or HDR playback, so if you have a 4K TV, you'll want to get one that can stream 4K videos; the reverse is also true, as a non-4K TV won't be able to take advantage of 4K playback.

Last but not least, it might be worth considering the ecosystem you're most plugged into. For example, Android users might be able to get more use from an Android TV or Google TV device, while those using an iPhone or Mac might prefer the Apple TV.

Through research and testing we've picked the best streaming sticks and boxes you can buy to turn your dumb TV into a smart one.

Note: All of the below products require access to the internet over Wi-Fi or Ethernet in order to stream content.

Here are the best streaming boxes and sticks:

Prices and links are current as of 1/8/2021. The language in this guide has been revised to reflect recent app launches and the new year. Updated by Kevin Webb.

The best streaming box overall

The Roku Ultra streams in 4K and HDR, has voice search, and comes with a remote control that has programmable shortcut buttons.

Pros: 4K and HDR streaming, new 2020 model adds Dolby Vision support and Bluetooth, voice remote, lots of apps, improved Wi-Fi connection, Ethernet, USB port

Cons: Doesn't support HDR10+, a bit pricey

Roku's Ultra has virtually everything a buyer could want out of streaming box. It supports 4K video at 60 frames per second and HDR playback. If you have a 4K TV, this model will help you get the most out of your display.

Roku doesn't require a Google or Apple account to use (you will need to register for a Roku account, however), but it can still connect to a huge library of streaming services. You'll be able to install Netflix, Disney Plus, Hulu, Peacock, Amazon Prime, Apple TV Plus, and more using Roku's operating system. It even supports HBO Max, which was previously missing from the channel selection. Just connect the box to your TV via the HDMI port, and install all your favorite streaming services to get started.

As mentioned, the Roku Ultra supports HDR, which means that it'll show richer colors and better contrast when playing back HDR-enabled videos on an HDR TV. The new 2020 Roku Ultra model also adds support for the advanced Dolby Vision format, which should improve HDR picture quality even more on Dolby Vision-enabled displays.

Of course, to take advantage of 4K HDR content, you'll need a decent internet connection. The device can connect to your internet through Ethernet or over Wi-Fi, so choose the method that's fastest and most convenient.

The Ultra also comes with a voice remote control so you can adjust the volume, turn on your TV, and search for content with your voice. If you're watching at night, you can plug in a set of headphones to the remote to not disturb others — a pair of earbuds are included. Roku also has a companion app that makes navigation and searches even more robust.

Bluetooth support is included as well for streaming music to the player, and the Roku Ultra even supports AirPlay 2 and HomeKit for easy connectivity to Apple devices.

The Roku Ultra is the most versatile and reliable media player in this price range, and we like that it's the most universal of the products. There are cheaper alternatives with less advanced features, but we think this model is the best choice for most people with a 4K TV.

The best budget streaming box

The Roku Express is one of the most affordable streaming boxes you can buy, and it offers a great interface with basic HD playback.

Pros: Cheap, compact design, easy-to-use, built-in OS

Cons: No 4K or HDR, no voice remote

For buyers who want a simple and inexpensive streaming solution, the Roku Express is the perfect fit. This model is about as basic as they come, but for the money, you're still getting a capable HD streaming box with a built-in user interface and remote.

Perhaps the best thing about the Roku Express is how easy it is to use. The new compact design makes it one of the smallest standalone streaming boxes there is, and the package comes complete with an HDMI cable for simple setup. The interface is well-designed and extremely easy to navigate.

Since it uses a built-in operating system, you can install apps like Netflix without having to stream from your phone or computer (you will need to register for a Roku account if you don't have one already). A remote control is included for navigation, but you can also use the Roku app.

Of course, there are downsides to the Roku Express. Unlike the Roku Ultra, which is our overall favorite, there's no USB port for playing external video files or Bluetooth for music streaming from a smartphone. The Roku Express also does not offer 4K streaming or HDR, so we recommend this model for people who have a TV that doesn't include those features.

For buyers who do need 4K on a budget, though, there's a very similar Roku model, the Roku Premiere, that might be a better fit for you. The Roku Premiere is a lot like the Roku Express, but it adds support for 4K, HDR, and AirPlay for a bit more money.

That said, the Premiere is sometimes on sale for less than the Express. When the Premiere is discounted, it's actually the better value of the two. If there are no discounts, however, and all you need is basic HD streaming, there's little reason to pay extra for a model more powerful than the Roku Express.

The best high-end streaming box

The Apple TV 4K is an ideal streaming player for enthusiasts who want Dolby Vision support and easy integration with the rest of Apple's products.

Pros: Well-designed interface, 4K and HDR playback with Dolby Vision support, can serve as a HomeKit hub

Cons: A little pricey

If you're looking for a device to better integrate with your iTunes account, iPhone, and other Apple devices, then you'll want to look into getting an Apple TV. The Apple TV 4K boasts a number of great features, and as the name suggests, this version streams in 4K and HDR, which is great for those of you who have 4K TVs and want the best home theater playback.

As you would expect from an Apple device, it's well-designed and will look right at home amongst your other home entertainment devices, even the more premium ones. On the back of the device, you'll get a power input, HDMI port, and an Ethernet port. That way, you can have a more stable internet connection for streaming 4K video.

One of the best things about the Apple TV 4K is Apple's tvOS operating system, which is super easy to use, especially with the included remote (called the Siri Remote). As mentioned, it can stream in 4K and has HDR support for improved contrast and colors. Unlike Roku's players, the Apple TV 4K also offers Dolby Vision support on top of standard HDR10. If you have a Dolby Vision TV, this means you'll get even better HDR performance when watching Dolby Vision titles from apps like Disney Plus and Apple TV Plus.

And with Siri, you can use your voice to search for content. Plus, you can access music, podcasts, games, and hundreds of apps, or cast or mirror content from an iOS or macOS device using AirPlay wireless technology. In addition, the Apple TV 4K can even serve as a HomeKit hub for Apple's smart home ecosystem.

The Siri Remote connects to the Apple TV via Bluetooth, so no line of sight is required. While the remote is elegant and the touch-capability makes navigation easier, it's so slim that it can be easy to lose or slip out of your hand. An alternative is to use the Apple TV Remote app on an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad, which handles the same functions but makes things like typing much simpler.

Engadget called it "almost perfect," while CNET called it the most high-end 4K streaming experience. However, the Apple TV is notably more expensive than some other streaming options from Roku and Amazon. Most people who aren't invested in the Apple ecosystem will be more than happy with the less expensive Roku Ultra instead.

Guides Editor Les Shu disagrees somewhat. He uses both the Roku Ultra and Roku Express+ and Apple TV, and finds the Apple TV experience much smoother and more pleasant than the Roku Ultra — not to mention the easier set-up process. While he acknowledges the price premium and that the Roku Ultra has its advantages, from a pure entertainment experience, he believes the Apple TV is the stronger product, and that it isn't just for Apple fans with money.

We don't think you can go wrong with either — the deciding factor comes down to budget and the ecosystem — but the money spent on an Apple TV is well worth it.

The best streaming device for Google users

Unlike older models, the new Chromecast with Google TV can play apps right from the device, rather than having to rely on casting from a separate smartphone.

Pros: 4K HDR support with Dolby Vision and HDR10+, Google Assistant voice remote, built-in interface and casting capabilities

Cons: Some apps are currently missing 4K HDR playback, minor glitches, no Apple TV app

Google's newest Chromecast model offers a sizable step forward in performance and usability over older versions. Though our previous pick in this category, the Chromecast Ultra, needed a separate phone, tablet, or computer to stream apps from, the Chromecast with Google TV actually features its own built-in interface with an extensive library of services.

You can still cast apps from a mobile device if you'd like, but the on-screen selection makes it much more convenient to find your favorite shows and movies right on your TV screen. This makes the Chromecast a more worthy competitor to similar compact streaming players, like the Fire TV Stick 4K.

Powered by the new Google TV platform, the Chromecast offers access to a huge collection of apps, including Netflix, Disney Plus, Prime Video, Hulu, HBO Max, Peacock, YouTube, and more. In fact, the only major app currently missing is Apple TV. 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and Dolby Atmos playback are supported for select services as well.

On the downside, a few key movie apps, like Vudu, FandangoNow, and Movies Anywhere, are currently limited to HD and SDR. This is especially disappointing since these apps do offer 4K HDR playback on other streaming devices, like the Roku Ultra. It's possible that these apps will receive updates for 4K in the future.

From a design perspective, the new Chromecast features a similar puck-shaped form factor as older models, complete with a dongle connection that hangs from your TV's HDMI port. Unlike older models, however, the latest version now includes a handy voice remote with integrated Google Assistant support. The Chromecast's Google Assistant also provides seamless integration with other Google devices. For example, you can control Google speakers or tell your Chromecast to display security camera footage from a Nest camera.

We encountered a few isolated glitches while testing the new Chromecast, but the device offers impressive overall performance and value, especially for buyers already invested in Google's ecosystem.

The best Amazon Fire TV

The Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K streams video in 4K straight to your TV.

Pros: 4K streaming, Alexa voice control, affordable, compact, support for HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision

Cons: Missing a few notable apps like Vudu, FandangoNow, Google Play, and Peacock

Amazon's Fire TV Stick 4K comes with 4K and HDR playback capabilities, including support for the more advanced HDR10+ and Dolby Vision formats. Like other streaming stick, this slim dongle plugs right into the HDMI port on the back of your TV. It also comes with an Alexa voice remote for easy access to play, pause, stop, volume up/down, and more.

Fire TV 4K works with Netflix, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Prime Video, YouTube, Hulu, and many other video streaming apps. Since it's part of Amazon's ecosystem, Fire TV is also compatible with Alexa voice controls on other Amazon products, like an Echo Dot. You can tell Alexa to play "Game of Thrones" without lifting a finger. If you don't have Alexa products or you're not an Amazon user, you may be better off with a different brand.

The streaming stick has a fast processor and 802.11ac Wi-Fi to ensure smooth streaming on your TV. So long as your Wi-Fi is good, you shouldn't have a problem.

Expert reviewers more or less agreed that Alexa voice search works well. It's also very affordable for a 4K streaming stick and includes extensive HDR format support for its price. In fact, it's one of the only players on the market with HDR10+ capabilities, which will improve color and contrast on Prime Video when watching HDR videos through an HDR10+ compatible TV.

If you're buying the device for features like Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, however, you might be disappointed by Amazon's surprisingly limited support for those formats through its own catalog of Prime content. A few key apps are also currently missing, including Peacock, Vudu, Google Play, and FandangoNow. If that's a deal-breaker, you'll have to grab a Roku, Apple TV, or Android TV player.

The best streaming player for gamers

The Nvidia Shield TV doesn't just run Google's Android TV, it also supports 4K streaming and can even pair with a controller for gaming.

Pros: 4K support, Dolby Vision capabilities, support for a separate gaming controller, Android TV operating system, powerful processor

Cons: Expensive

If you're more plugged into the Android ecosystem, you might want something that comes preloaded with Google's Android TV. If so, there are few better devices than the Nvidia Shield TV, which was first launched a few years ago and has been updated a few times since then. Though pricier than other players, the latest model is the ultimate streaming device for buyers who want beefy specs.

Like our top pick, this media streamer supports 4K HDR content, but also adds Dolby Vision for even better HDR performance on Dolby Vision TVs. Google Assistant voice control is integrated as well and, unlike the cheaper Chromecast Ultra, this is a standalone product that doesn't require a phone.

The Shield TV is also the best streaming box for gamers. In addition to the included standard remote control, you can add a separate gaming controller for playing games from the Google Play Store or through GeForce Now cloud gaming.

When it comes to raw specs, the Shield TV incorporates 2GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. The device is powered by the NVIDIA Tegra X1+, which is one of the most powerful processors used in any streaming device. This extra muscle even allows the device to take advantage of advanced upscaling technology, which can make HD videos look better on 4K TVs.

Unlike most streaming players, the Shield TV features a unique cylindrical design which takes the form of a compact tube that is meant to be placed behind a display. This style won't be for everyone, but it makes it easy to hide the device out of sight.

For buyers who want even more power, there's also a Shield TV Pro model to consider. This more expensive version features a more traditional rectangular shape and upgraded specs with 3GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and two USB 3.0 ports.

The standard Shield TV, however, is still plenty powerful, and is a better overall value for people who want an Android TV streaming player that's capable of gaming.

I've long understood the importance of brushing my dog's teeth. Years ago, I worked as a veterinary assistant where I saw firsthand what happens when a pet's teeth are not taken care of. Sadly, it's all too common to see teeth extracted during routine dental cleanings due to years of neglect.

"Proper dental care is a vital component of your pet's overall health and well-being," said veterinarian Dr. Ashlee Redmond. "Bad breath isn't just an unpleasant smell — it could be a warning sign of more serious dental disease."

There are many dog toothpastes and toothbrushes to choose from as well as no-brush gels, water additives, and dental chews. Redmond pointed out that home dental care products do not replace daily brushing or professional dental cleanings, but they can be supportive of overall dental health.

Dog dental products can help prevent the formation of plaque and tartar in between cleanings. Veterinarians recommend professional dental cleanings at least once a year. These are performed just like human dental cleanings, but dogs must be anesthetized so the veterinarian can clean under the gum line where plaque and tartar hide.

For this guide, I tested 17 dental products with my dog, giving strong consideration to those that have received the seal of acceptance from the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC). All the products we tested also got the okay from Redmond to rule out anything that could be potentially unsafe. Read more about how we selected and tested products at the end of this guide.

These are the best dog dental products you can buy

The best toothpaste

Petsmile Professional Pet Toothpaste is clinically proven to remove plaque and stains, eliminate bad breath, and prevent tartar buildup, and is the only dog toothpaste that's VOHC accepted.

Pros: Proven in clinical trials to remove plaque and stains, eliminate bad breath, and prevent tartar buildup; human-grade ingredients; brushing not required

Cons: Expensive

The best thing you can do at home for your dog's oral health is brushing their teeth daily with a pet-safe toothpaste (never use human toothpaste for your dog—this can make them sick).

"Pets that begin having their teeth brushed when they are young can learn to tolerate this activity sometimes better than older pets," Redmond said. "However, pets of all ages can learn to accept having their teeth brushed."

Petsmile Professional Pet Toothpaste is designed to work whether you use it with a toothbrush or just apply it to the teeth and sides of mouth with a swab or your finger, so it's kind of like a toothpaste/dental gel hybrid. However, we recommend brushing with it to get the benefits of toothbrushing.

Petsmile's proprietary formula called Calprox, an encapsulated form of calcium peroxide and minerals, is clinically proven to remove plaque, stains, and bad breath, and prevent tartar buildup. Petsmile is currently the only VOHC-accepted pet toothpaste, which ultimately boosted this toothpaste to the winner's circle.

The toothpaste comes in two dog-centric flavors: London Broil and Rotisserie Chicken. I tested the London Broil flavor. Meat-flavored toothpaste is not my favorite scent in the world, but my dog loved this toothpaste, which is the most important thing.

The best toothbrush

Bodhi Dog Doggie Toothbrushes include six long-handled toothbrushes with dual brush heads to work for any size dog as well as six fingertip brushes, making this product a great value.

Pros: Comes with 12 toothbrushes in two styles, long handles to reach the back of the mouth, extra soft bristles, best value

Cons: No grip on the plastic handle

When choosing a toothbrush for your dog, you have the option of two basic styles: long-handled, which has nylon bristles similar to your own toothbrush, or fingertip, which fits over your finger and has soft, plastic nubs on the end. You can also use an  ADA compliant soft bristle flat head toothbrushes. However, fingertip toothbrush is a good option for puppies or adult dogs that are new to teeth brushing, as it can be a little less scary for the dog. I personally prefer to use a long-handled toothbrush, which allows me to reach all the teeth in the back of the mouth.

Bodhi Dog Doggie Toothbrushes set offers both brush styles, and with six long-handled toothbrushes and six fingertip toothbrushes for under $10, it's a fantastic value. Having extra toothbrushes is great if you have multiple pets, and it also means you can easily replace the brush when it gets yucky. As with human toothbrushes, pet toothbrushes should be replaced every three to four months — and always rinse the brush after each use.

The long-handled brushes feature very soft, gentle bristles, with a larger bristle head on one side and a smaller one on the other side, so they work for dogs of all sizes (and cats, too). The fingertip brushes are soft and flexible, for gentle cleaning. I found both types of brushes gentle, effective, and easy to use.

The best dental gel

Using all natural ingredients, Tropiclean Clean Brushing Gel clings to the teeth to break down plaque and tartar and fight bad breath.

Pros: All natural ingredients like zinc chloride and green tea leaf extract, clings to teeth to break down plaque and tartar, spearmint added for fresh breath

Cons: For best results, must withhold food and water for 30 minutes before and after using gel; not VOHC accepted

Dental gels are similar to pet toothpastes, but gels are designed to have prolonged contact with the teeth to deliver ingredients that help fight bacteria, plaque, and tartar. It's important to note that none of the dental gels tested for this guide are VOHC accepted. (Two dental gels are currently VOHC accepted, and we look forward to testing them in the future.)

"Zinc ascorbate, gluconate, oxide, and chloride are often incorporated in dental gels and water additives as antibacterial agents to help decrease plaque formation and bad breath," Redmond said. "After delivery into the oral cavity, the zinc remains in the mouth and helps with decreasing bacteria amounts."

Tropiclean Brushing Gel is designed to be used with a toothbrush, so it can be used instead of toothpaste. The gel formula clings to the teeth and gums, delivering plaque and tartar fighting zinc chloride (.01g/10ml) and green tea leaf extract, and breath-freshening spearmint.

The gel smells very minty and my dog seemed to enjoy the flavor. The directions instruct you to withhold food and water 30 minutes before and after using it to allow for maximum effect, which requires some good planning on your part. This gel beat out the others thanks to its multiple antiplaque ingredients and the addition of spearmint, which left my dog's breath minty fresh.

The best dental water additive

Using proprietary Oxygene and zinc acetate, Oxyfresh Water Additive eliminates bacteria that causes bad pet breath, removes plaque buildup, and protects gums.

Pros: Odorless and tasteless, dye-free, brushing not required

Cons: Not VOHC accepted

Water additives typically contain similar ingredients as dental gels, but instead of being applied to the teeth, they are added to your dog's water. It truly doesn't get easier to care for your dog's teeth then to pour a capful of water additive into their bowl every day.

As with the dental gels, none of the water additives tested for this guide are VOHC accepted. (Only one company, HealthyMouth, makes water additives that are currently VOHC accepted, and we look forward to testing some of them in the future.)

Oxyfresh Water Additive uses a patented blend of Oxygene and zinc acetate to eliminate bacteria that causes bad pet breath, remove plaque buildup, and protect gums. Although all the water additives tested contained forms of antibacterial zinc, Oxyfresh beat out the others because it also contains a second bacteria-eliminating ingredient, Oxygene.

Like all the water additives I tested, Oxyfresh is tasteless and odorless, so pets don't know it's even in their water bowl. In addition to giving the water additives to my dog, I also sampled them myself to confirm they were indeed tasteless.

The best dental chew

Greenies Fresh Dental Dog Treats clean your dog's teeth as they chew and temporarily freshen their breath, too.

Pros: VOHC accepted for plaque and tartar, contains natural spearmint to help freshen breath, nutritionally complete and balanced

Cons: May cause gastrointestinal upset, not appropriate for dogs with gluten intolerance

Dental chews are designed to mechanically clean the teeth as the dog chews. "Although less effective than regular brushing at home and certainly not as thorough as a professional cleaning by a veterinarian, dental chews can help keep your dog's teeth clean — if your dog actually chews them," Redmond said.

Observe your dog to make sure they're slowly chewing on a dental treat rather than gulping down large chunks or even swallowing the entire chew, which could potentially cause a blockage in the gastrointestinal tract.

I tested three different dental chews. All were similar in that they have a firm, chewy texture and shape designed to clean teeth and gums as the dog chews, but each contained different ingredients and had a different shape. Although my dog loved all three dental chews he tried, Greenies Fresh Dental Dog Treats stood out as the best in the group.

Greenies are dark green chews shaped like little toothbrushes. VOHC-accepted Greenies contain spearmint to help freshen breath. I detected a distinct minty odor as my dog was chewing, this effect wasn't particularly long-lasting. Although Greenies are intended to be used just once daily as treats, they are formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for adult dog maintenance. This is rare in treats, so it gives Greenies another edge over the competition.

Although my dog has a strong stomach, Greenies can cause gastrointestinal upset in some pets or turn stools green. The first ingredient in Greenies is wheat flour, so it is not a good choice for dogs with gluten intolerance. For dogs that cannot eat wheat, ProDen PlaqueOff System Dental Care Bones, which are VOHC accepted for plaque and tartar, are a good alternative.

What else we considered

Toothpastes and gels

Toothbrushes

  • Petsmile Professional Pet Toothbrush: This is a dual-ended, long-handled toothbrush with soft bristles and a nice rubber grip on the handle. Although it's a really nice toothbrush, it's hard to justify the price. If you want the Cadillac of pet toothbrushes and don't mind paying the hefty price, this could be the toothbrush for you.
  • Virbac C.E.T. Pet Toothbrush: This toothbrush is soft, with two bristle heads for different size dogs and a long handle to reach the back teeth. It's affordable, but it doesn't beat the Bodhi Dog 12-pack.
  • Vetoquinol Care Enzadent Dual-Ended Toothbrush: This toothbrush is very similar to the Bodhi Dog Doggie Toothbrushes (it's even the same color), but you only get one for $4. For just $3 more, the 12-pack from Bodhi Dog is a much better value.

Water additives

  • Tropiclean Fresh Breath Water Additive: This contains zinc gluconate and green tea leaf extract, among other ingredients, to defend against plaque and tartar. At about $0.50 an ounce, this water additive is a good value. Like the other additives we tested for this guide, it is not VOHC accepted.
  • Oratene Enzymatic Brushless Oral Care Water Additive: This additive uses a patented LP3 enzyme system as well as zinc chloride to support periodontal health and keep teeth and gums clean. But it's nearly triple the price of Oxyfresh Pet Water Additive, making Oxyfresh a far better value.

Dental chews

How we selected and tested products

For this guide to the best dog dental products, I tested 17 products with my dog five or more times during a three-month period. Products were provided as editorial review samples by their manufacturers, and each product got the okay from Redmond to rule out anything that could be potentially unsafe.

Strong consideration was given to products that carry the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) seal of acceptance. The VOHC is an entity of the American Veterinary Dental College.

"When choosing an at-home dental product, you should look for the VOHC seal of acceptance on the product's package or website," Redmond said. "The VOHC provides third-party assessment for dental products. A seal of acceptance means the product meets preset criteria for effectiveness in controlling plaque and tartar deposition in dogs and cats."

If a product is not VOHC accepted, it either means its manufacturer has not conducted clinical trials that show efficacy, or the manufacturer simply has not sought acceptance through the VOHC. In this guide, VOHC-accepted products were rated higher because the seal of acceptance demonstrates that the product's claims are backed up by science.

Since I am not a veterinary dentist nor a research scientist, I cannot make any claims regarding the efficacy of the products. Instead, I evaluated each product and rated them based on whether the product is accepted by the VOHC, product performance compared to manufacturer claims, the price of the product, and whether my dog seemed to enjoy the product.

What we're looking forward to testing

We plan to test the following products for a later update to this guide:

Tips for brushing your dog's teeth

If you're new to brushing your dog's teeth, know that it is easier than you might think! Pet-safe toothpaste comes in dog-enticing flavors like chicken, duck, and beef, so most dogs get on board with brushing pretty quickly.

"The best time to brush your pet's teeth is when you are both relaxed," Redmond said. "If your pet resists the brushing, growls, bites, scratches, or shows any other signs of aggression during toothbrushing, stop immediately and consult your veterinarian for advice."

Start out slow, giving your dog several days or weeks to adjust. It's okay if you only brush a few teeth at a time for the first few sessions. Focus on the outside surfaces of the teeth. Plaque and tartar generally do not accumulate much on the insides of the teeth since the dog's tongue is constantly wiping them clean. Keep brushing sessions positive with treats or tummy rubs.

Redmond offers these helpful tips for brushing your dog's teeth:

  • When brushing with a toothbrush, keep the mouth closed and slip the brush in between the cheek and teeth.
  • Your pet may try to move backward when you open their mouth; be prepared.
  • Using pet toothpaste, brush on the outside of the teeth only. Do not worry about the inside of the teeth.
  • Praise your pet frequently during the brushing.
  • If your pet tolerates only brief brushing, don't be discouraged. Some brushing is better than none at all.

Investing books roundup 4x3

Summary List Placement

Since I was a teen, the stock market always seemed complex and full of uncertainty. Investing was never on my radar. That is, until my Chilean father encouragingly obligated me into opening an account with some of my savings when I was 23 years old. I abided, though my small form of resistance was to quickly bury my head in the sand. I didn't look at my account for several years because I was afraid of what I didn't understand.

When my dad passed away, I decided it was time to take control of my finances. Friends recommended me to their financial advisors, but after several meetings discussing my investing goals (and risk aversion), I left feeling uncomfortable and confused because I didn't understand the jargon.

I knew I needed to learn how the stock market worked before I could make any big decisions, advisor or not. I wanted to understand the different types of investments, such as individual shares, mutual funds, index funds, ETFs, and bonds, as well as the monetary difference between active and passive investing.

So I began to educate myself by reading as many books as possible over the last seven years. Over time, I noticed a consistency in the advice I kept coming across, which gave me more confidence in what I was doing. That's when I realized I was the best person to manage my own money and have been doing so on my own for the last several years. In total, I estimate that I saved around $10,000 from investing on my own instead of paying a financial advisor.

Here are the 8 books I read to learn how to invest without an advisor:

To get the lay of the investing land:

"Stock Market 101: From Bull and Bear Markets to Dividends, Shares, and Margins — Your Essential Guide to the Stock Market" by Michele Cagan

Investing can be intimidating and scary, but Michele Cagan simplifies everything with easy-to-comprehend examples. She breaks down how to invest in the stock market with hands-on lessons, making it great for novices. This guide helped me jump in and take charge of my portfolio without over-analyzing my investment decisions and goals. The author also dedicated time explaining how Wall Street works, making me less intimidated by the stock market in general.

To learn the essentials of accruing wealth:

"Millionaire Teacher: The Nine Rules of Wealth You Should Have Learned in School" by Andrew Hallam

Part-memoir and part-how-to guide, this book dives into how Hallam created and managed a million-dollar investment portfolio on a teacher's salary. Following the rules he lays out, Hallam asserts that with knowledge, diligence, patience, and strategy, anyone can create an impressive investment account, regardless of their earnings. Having worked as an international teacher myself, his advice and perspective hit home, especially regarding the money-saving benefits of being a passive investor. He also breaks down the information in a clear way, with plenty of examples from his own life.

Product Card

To understand recessions and low points better:

"A Random Walk Down Wall Street: The Time-Tested Strategy for Successful Investing" by Burton G. Malkiel

Economist and financial advisor Burton Malkiel first published this book in 1973, which is now considered a classic among investors. Revised and updated numerous times to reflect current times and new investment opportunities, it's also full of history lessons explaining recessions, depressions, booms, and busts. The historical examples provide a broader context and have helped me be less reactive when the market fluctuates or goes down. Although it's geared towards anyone interested in investing, it can sometimes be theoretical and technical, but it's a comprehensive guide to what you need to know to get started — from different types of investment vehicles to the ins and outs of reading a stock chart.

Product Card

To know everything you need to about index funds:

"The Little Book of Common Sense Investing: The Only Way to Guarantee Your Fair Share of Stock Market Returns" by John C. Bogle

John Bogle, the founder of the Vanguard Group, is considered to be the first person to create an index fund. Now in its tenth edition and considered a must-read, this book highlights the importance of a diversified portfolio by investing in low-cost index funds and staying in the market for the long term. One of the main takeaways is that investors reduce their risk by not investing in individual stocks— instead, they invest in multiple companies in an index, which will get a better stock market return.

Product Card

To break it down really simply:

"How a Second Grader Beats Wall Street: Golden Rules Any Investor Can Learn" by Allan Roth

Financial planner Allan Roth teaches his eight-year-old son, Kevin, about how to invest in the stock market. The premise is that even a young child can grasp how the market works; investing doesn't have to be complicated. Written in a simple style with an array of examples, it showed me how to create a diverse portfolio and why it's important; how to minimize costs by opting for index funds instead of mutual funds; and how to build wealth over the long term.

Product Card

To dive into dividends:

"Investing In Dividends For Dummies" by Lawrence Carrel

Investing in companies that offer dividends can be a great asset for creating a well-rounded portfolio since you'll gain returns while the stocks are in your account. Dividends provide earnings as long as you own the stocks, which means you don't have to wait to sell shares to reap the rewards. This book breaks down everything you need to know about dividends from what they are to how to research which companies offer them, as well as how they can complement your portfolio, depending on your short and long-term goals.

Product Card

To glance at the future of investing:

"Street Smarts: Adventures on the Road and in the Markets" by Jim Rogers

Jim Rogers is considered a Wall Street legend and well-regarded investor. In his memoir, he shares his personal story of how he began his career, made his way to Wall Street, and helped run a hedge fund. Intertwining adventures in his personal and professional life, he provides a deeper perspective by incorporating plenty of American and global stock market history. This book made me more aware of why my view of the world often collides with how the market works; one takeaway is companies need to continually grow and expand to cater to their investors. He also offers several observations on the current state of affairs and where he believes things are headed, making for an interesting (and perhaps surprising) read.

Product Card

To get a true insider’s account:

"Invested: Changing Forever the Way Americans Invest" by Charles Schwab

In this memoir by Charles Schwab, who founded the bank of the same name, he explains how he set out to create a space for all Americans to have access to investing in Wall Street, with a focus on offering the best customer service. With history and personal anecdotes weaved into the narrative, such as the dot-com bubble bursting to the housing market crash, Schwab explains how his team carefully navigated plenty of unexpected twists and turns. I enjoyed this book because it highlights how far personal investing in the stock market has come and how easy it now is for individuals to create and manage their own online account.

The 8 best winter boots for men

Table of Contents: Masthead StickySummary List Placement

Boots have to provide two qualities to be suitable for use during the winter: insulation and water-resistance. If your boots can't keep your feet warm and they can't keep your feet dry, then they're just not suitable for wintertime use.

And of those two imperative qualities, waterproofing is the most important factor. Once your socks grow sodden after snow, slush, or rain inundate your footwear, the insulation properties of the boots are no longer of much importance. It's no coincidence that most of the boots on our list have the word "waterproof" right in the product title.

But what makes a great winter boot, beyond the warmth and dryness? It's largely relative. You need to choose a boot that fits the places in which you'll use it and the tasks at hand in said locations. We've rounded up the best winter boots you can buy for different use cases and styles.

Here are the best winter boots for men in 2021:

Updated on 1/8/2020: Updated prices and links. Added a "best for rough terrain" category.

Best winter boots overall

With the Columbia Bugaboot Plus IV Omni Cold-Weather Boots on your feet, you are going to be toasty warm even when the weather isn't, thanks to the advanced insulation and lightweight design.

Pros: Amazing insulation quality, reliably waterproof, good traction on snow, ice, and varied terrain

Cons: Too warm for use except in winter, rather large and bulky

The Columbia Bugaboot Plus IV Omni Cold-Weather Boots will keep your feet dry if you stand in a stream or puddle. Seriously, you could just step right into the water, and provided it didn't crest the impressive seven-inch rise of the shaft, your feet would not get wet. And were the stream or puddle into which you stepped freezing cold, your feet would stay nice and warm, too. That's because these exceptionally well-made winter boots come with 200-gram insulation and an Omni-Heat reflective lining that radiates your own body heat right back at you.

You know those metallic emergency blankets (also called space blankets) that people wrap themselves in after an accident or after running a marathon? Columbia's Omni-Heat technology uses much the same approach. The lining consists of multiple little dots of a radiant metallic material that reflects your foot's warmth back into the boot instead of absorbing it and drawing the warmth away from your extremities.

And to top it off (or... bottom it off, to be more precise) these boots have an outsole featuring excellent traction that's lightweight and offers plenty of energy return. The boots are an ideal choice for winter treks, whether you're hiking across miles of woodland terrain or simply plodding across town on a cold wintry morning.

Best classic winter boots

L.L.Bean's shearling-lined 10-inch boots are the warmest of the bunch, but any of the Bean Boots will serve you well through both fall and winter, and they go with most outfits.

Pros: Sturdy, high-end leather and rubber, steel shank for support, not outrageously priced, hand-stitched

Cons: Maybe not the most fashion-forward boots you'll come across this season (or next), but their beauty lies in their utilitarianism

L.L.Bean's boots were introduced in 1912, and haven't changed much since. That's because they haven't had to.

Leon Leonwood Bean did generations of anglers and hunters a serious solid by tacking together these remarkably warm and dry boots. The Bean Boots went on to become the genesis of his stardom more than a century ago. Today, you'll find them everywhere from the backwoods of Maine to the boroughs of the Big Apple.

While many of L.L.Bean's products are being made offshore these days, the company continues to craft a select few of its products stateside, including the beloved Bean Boots.

Constructed using rubber bottoms and soles, a steel shank, full-grain leather uppers, and 3M Thinsulate, these boots have hardly changed since the start. Of course, there was no 3M nor Thinsulate in the early 20th century, but the design, the leather, and the rubber have all remained the same.

One thing that has changed in L.L.Bean's boot game is variety. There are more than 30 styles of Bean Boots to choose from with an array of linings so there's a pair for each season.

These boots are part of the history of exploration and expedition themselves, having gone to war for the United States Army and forayed both poles. They are also storied to have found their way onto Ernest Hemingway's feet, who, according to GQ, even went so far as to recommend them himself.

The endorsements don't stop there. Popular Mechanics discussed The Never-Ending Greatness of L.L.Bean's Boots, and GQ has sung L.L.Bean's praise for years. One staff member here at Insider Inc. made a pair of these boots last more than 30 years. Here's proof.

Unfortunately, L.L.Bean's lifetime guarantee was discontinued, and purchases only come with a one-year warranty from here on out. We're sad to see this longstanding tradition go, but will still stand by Bean's boots unless the quality itself starts to drop. — Owen Burke

Best winter boots for rough terrain

Columbia's Daska Pass III Titatnium Outdry Extreme boots are reliably waterproof in snow, sleet, or rain, feature a grippy Vibram outsole, and come in a high-top design for added coverage and support.

Pros: Fully waterproof, features a grippy Vibram outsole, its full grain leather upper is both durable and breathable, high-top design offers added ankle support

Cons: May take some time to fully break-in

Sizing options: 8—11.5

Columbia Sportswear may not be the first name that comes to mind when thinking of technical winter boots, but its Daska Pass III Titatnium Outdry Extreme boots are some of the most impressive I've tested. Not only are they fully waterproof, capable of managing everything from hikes in the pouring rain to treks through deep powder, but they're made of durable, full-grain leather that's surprisingly breathable.
Their impenetrable waterproofing is thanks to the brand's in-house construction tech called OutDry — a lightweight, breathable membrane that works extremely well to keep all moisture out. This means no more wet hiking socks. You could fully submerge your foot with these on and still stay bone dry.

The other feature that keeps me coming back to these boots is its ultra-grippy, Vibram outsole. Winter hiking, no matter how hard the trail, can produce its fair share of slips and spills, but the tread pattern and traction native to the outsole does well to improve stability and grips even the slickest of terrain. The overall design of the boot itself also promotes added support in the ankle. And since they are manufactured using a full-grain leather upper, rubber overlays, and metal lace loops, they're highly durable and able to last for at least a few seasons of consistent use. — Rick Stella

Best stylish winter boots

Red Wing is known by many as one of the longest-running leather boot designers in the United States, and the Heritage 6-inch Moc Toe is an iconic and dependable workhorse boot.

Pros: Trendy, rugged, waterproof, tough soles

Cons: Breaking them in can be a painful chore (but well worth the agony)

I've been testing out a pair of Red Wing's Heritage Moc Toes this year as the weather's been getting cooler, and I get the feeling that they may well outlast me. It might be the leather, which is almost unbearably tough to start (my ankles have the blisters and abrasions to prove it) but softens just enough over time without compromising the stitching at all.

These aren't the kind of boots I'd want to wear on a winter hike, but they're just right for trotting around town while still keeping a semblance of fashion about you.

With humble turn-of-the-twentieth-century beginnings in a small Minnesota town from which it took its name, Red Wing has been sourcing leather to make its boots from a nearby tanning factory that the company bought in the 1970s.

The fashion experts at Esquire call them a work boot "for the weekend" to be worn running errands or heading out on the town. AskMen swears by them, too, but warns that there may be a hellacious break-in period.

All in all, you can't go wrong with any pair of Red Wings, but the classic eight-inch 877s are an icon in and of themselves. — Owen Burke

Best rubber boots for winter

Soft, heavily insulated, and easy to pop on and off, Muck Boots' Arctic Sport boots are great for work and play all winter long.

Pros: Waterproof, lightweight, suitable for multi-season use, tall neoprene shaft, ideal for wading across shallow streams, well-insulated with fleece and thermal foam

Cons: Lining is not removable and can get hot, especially with sweaty feet, not ideal on slick or black ice with little or no snow cover, no laces for those who require ankle support

Muck Boots are a popular choice for all seasons and terrains, but the Arctic Sport boots are designed with an additional 2mm of thermal foam atop 8mm of neoprene, earning a broad comfort rating between -40 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

They're great for shoveling the driveway or running to the store while keeping you and your clothes muck-free. They'll also suffice for a light hike, and are excellent on any flatland adventures.

The Arctic Sport boots are also fleece-lined, completely waterproof right to the top, and incorporate a breathable "airmesh" lining, keeping your feet dry from within and without.

The lightweight rubber sole is reparable, so if you find a fissure after a few seasons of wear and tear, a quick patch job will have them ship-shape in short order.

The tall shaft of the boot is 14.5 inches when measured from the arch, making these boots great for light wading in shallow streams.

Weighing between two and two-and-a-half pounds, the Arctic Sport is extremely lightweight for any boot, let alone a lined, waterproof one with a reinforced toe, or "bumper."

All in all, Muck Boots' Arctic Sports might be a bit cumbersome for romping around town for any length of time, but they're fully serviceable for dipping out of the house. — Owen Burke

Best affordable winter work boots

When there's work to be done, the Ever Boots Ultra Dry Insulated Waterproof Work Boots ensure the winter weather won't slow you down.

Pros: Great price point, reliable waterproofing, classic work boot look

Cons: Sizes run too large, break-in period required

A good work boot helps you accomplish your tasks without you even knowing it's there. Work boots need to be supportive and protective yet lightweight enough for the long hours required at the construction site, the farm, or the landscaping job. They need to keep your feet warm and dry in the winter, but not be so heavily insulated as to make feet sweat when your body temperature is raised. And of course, work boots need to be tough enough to endure the abuse that comes with the toughest jobs.

The Ever Boots Ultra Dry Insulated Waterproof Work Boots score high marks when tested against every one of the aforementioned standards, and they even have one more attribute worth noting: They look great. While aesthetics might have little effect on how well you get your work done, you might as well choose a work boot that looks good, right?

Made with full-grain leather, these boots are a great choice for workers in areas where winter precipitation can be heavy. Beyond that waterproof leather, they have watertight stitches, water-resistant laces, and a seal added along the sole to help make sure no snowmelt, rain, or slush ever soaks through to your feet.

A gear tester with AllThingsWaterproof called the Ever Boots Ultra Dry Insulated Waterproof Work Boots "ideal for construction, landscaping, gardening" and more, while a MyWorkWear writer noted the affordable price and the "high-quality materials and exceptional workmanship."

Consider stepping down a half-size because, in our experience, these boots tend to run large.

Best low-cost winter boots

As a great budget winter boot option, you'll get at least a couple of seasons out of Kamik's sturdy, reliable, faux-fur-lined winter boots.

Pros: Affordable, wide selection, over a century of shoemaking experience

Cons: Not the most durable boots in the world, but great at this price range

Kamik has been making affordable winter boots in Canada since 1898, and for the past 25 years, Kamik has been striving toward sustainability. The company has its own boot and recycling programs and 73% of its goods are North-American-made.

A removable polyester felt liner keeps things toasty inside while a faux-shearling collar helps to seal in the heat. Kamik claims that the boots are rated down to -58 degrees Fahrenheit, but, frankly, if you're entering temperatures anywhere in that range, you may want to invest a little more in a higher-tech boot.

The downfall of many a cheap boot — apart from poor lower-to-upper binding — is riveted eyelets, which are wont to pop off in short order. Kamik only makes a handful of boots this way, though. Our pick, the Alborg Cold Weather boot has D-ring eyelets sewn on with leather patches, which should hold up at least a couple of seasons.

Around the web, OutdoorGearLab and Switchback Travel both recommend Kamik boots as a budget option. — Owen Burke

Best affordable winter boots for wearing around town

Who said winter boots can't be handsome and stylish? The Timberland White Ledge Waterproof Boots keep your feet warm, dry, and supported, plus they look great.

Pros: Classic stylish looks, out of the box comfort, built to last for years

Cons: Sole too thin for some uses/users, narrow toe box

There is an elegant simplicity to the Timberland White Ledge Waterproof Boots. They are made almost entirely of full-grain leather with a dark oiled finish that only gets better looking with age. The eyelets and hooks are brass colored and will also take on a faint patina as the seasons roll by.

These boots will look right at home whether you're wearing them with coveralls as you conduct highway repairs on a freezing winter morning or at the bottom of a pair of designer jeans as you make your way into the lodge to grab a coffee or cocktail.

The White Ledge boots have a multidirectional lug pattern on the sole, providing you plenty of grip when you're trekking along the trail, climbing a hill with a steep grade, or standing in one spot while working. The breathable dual-density EVA footbed provides support and helps to prevent your foot from overheating, while a generously padded collar and tongue help ensure these boots are comfortable the very first time you slip them on.

You can treat these boots like hardware for work or for hiking, but you might also consider reserving them for winter nights out on the town.

The professional gear writers are effusive, with a review on BootBomb.com calling them ideal for use on "slippery slopes" or "muddy riverbanks" while also noting their "fine looking design." A tester from Today's Camping Gear called them breathable and comfortable and appreciated their moderate weight.

best catskills hotels eastwind

Summary List Placement

Although the pandemic continues to spread across the US and New York is currently seeing an uptick in cases in many areas, some city dwellers are eager to get away, even if just for a weekend. But with all the uncertainty still surrounding travel, many vacationers are looking to stay close to home.

Roughly two hours outside of Manhattan, the Catskills offer a scenic outdoor escape that makes social distancing easy. The area has seen a resurgence in recent years as developers and hoteliers have been quick to revitalize hotels around the region in the hopes of attracting the next generation of urbanites looking for fresh air to go with their cup of locally sourced artisanal coffee. Historically, the Catskills have been known as a spiritual retreat, from iconic Woodstock to the quaint town of Phoenicia. In the 1970s, everyone from Janis Joplin to Jimi Hendrix frequented the area.

I've been vacationing in the Catskills for over a decade and watched the area not only evolve, but reclaim some of its former glory as the vacation destination of yesteryear. And now, I'm more eager than ever to return to the charms and fresh mountain air, along with the plethora of lodging options, the Catskills provide.

You may be wondering if a hotel stay is safe right now. The answer depends on several factors, including the size of the hotel and how many other guests are staying there, as well as what precautions the hotel is taking. Many hotels have rolled out enhanced cleaning and safety policies over the last few months. However, it's worth reading up on the specifics of a hotel's policies before booking.

Of course, it's important to know that there's still no guarantee for safety when traveling right now. We talked to experts to weigh in on travel risks from renting a car to staying at hotels, but you should also consider your own risk factors and always follow guidelines from places like the CDC and WHO. Handwashing, wearing a mask in public areas, and practicing safe social distancing are all measures that should be taken no matter where you plan to go.

You may also want to consider these affordable Airbnbs in the Catskills since experts have noted that stays in private rented homes may be safer due to fewer interactions with other people.

With those precautions in mind, I've curated a list of top Catskills hotels, based on the following criteria:

  1. All are well-located hotels where it's easy to take advantage of the areas outdoor offerings, from skiing and hiking trails to local breweries and sweat lodges.
  2. Every hotel has excellent design details, amenities, and offerings that truly help set them apart, from standalone glamping cabins to uniquely themed rooms.
  3. I've been to many of these hotels personally, and have also taken into consideration feedback from well-traveled friends, along with the ratings and reviews of trusted traveler sites like Trip Advisor and Booking.com.
  4. Hotels range in price from $149 to $397 per night to suit a range of budgets.
  5. All have new COVID-19 protocols and procedures in places, which I've noted below to help you rest easier.

Read on for the best hotels in the Catskills, sorted by price from low to high.

Bringg, the Israeli delivery software startup, raked in more than $30 million in a fundraising round backed by the likes of Salesforce and Next47, the investment arm of Siemens.

Founded in 2013, Bringg counts major retail and restaurant players among its biggest customers around the world, including Walmart and McDonald's, which use its software to coordinate deliveries.

Bringg specializes in helping traditional bricks and mortar outlets compete with retail giants like Amazon, by providing ready-to-use software, which allows them to easily track drivers and communicate with customers.

As COVID-19 puts paid to high-street shopping, CEO Guy Bloch told Business Insider he had seen a surge in demand for online deliveries – with some clients reporting an 800% jump month-on-month.

Amazon recently revealed its first-quarter sales had jumped 26% to $75.5 billion, with Bank of America analysts describing the wider sector as "on fire".

Failure to pivot to online deliveries has proven lethal to some firms, with the UK discount clothing store Primark's monthly sales nosediving from £650 million to £0.

"As we slowly became more aware of the ways coronavirus was going to impact us, it really only gave our investors more reason to get involved," said Bloch.

"The total switch to online has been coming for a while, but we are seeing that accelerated right now."

Jeff Bezos/Lauren Sanchez

Summary List Placement

It's been a turbulent two years for Jeff Bezos and his girlfriend, Lauren Sanchez.

In January 2019, the bombshell news broke that the Amazon CEO and his wife, MacKenzie, were getting a divorce after 25 years of marriage. Hours later, we learned that Bezos was in a relationship with Lauren Sanchez, a TV host and helicopter pilot who, along with her husband, had been friends with the Bezoses.

Despite a tumultuous few months that involved leaked texts, blackmail, a billion-dollar divorce, and maybe even interference from the Saudi Arabian government, Bezos and Sanchez are still going strong.

Here's how their relationship became public and how they've spent the last two years as a couple.

SEE ALSO: A history of the 30-year feud between Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, whose love-hate relationship spurred the success of Microsoft and Apple

It all started on January 9, 2019. Shortly after 9 a.m., Jeff and his wife, MacKenzie, issued a joint statement on Twitter that they were divorcing.

"As our family and close friends know, after a long period of loving exploration and trial separation, we have decided to divorce and continue our shared lives as friends,"the statement read."If we had known we would separate after 25 years, we would do it all again."

MacKenzie is one of Amazon's earliest employees. The couple has four children together.

A mere few hours later, a second bombshell dropped: Bezos was in a relationship with Lauren Sanchez.

Sanchez started her career as a news reporter and anchor— she was a longtime anchor of "Good Day LA" on Fox 11 and worked as a correspondent on "Extra."

More recently, she's worked as a helicopter pilot and founded her own aerial filming company in 2016 called Black Ops Aviation. Bezos has hired Sanchez's company to film footage for his rocket company, Blue Origin.

Sanchez has also had TV and film roles, including as the host of the reality show "So You Think You Can Dance" and playing an anchor in movies like "Fight Club" and "The Day After Tomorrow," according to her IMDB page

At the time, Sanchez was married to Patrick Whitesell, the co-CEO of WME, a Hollywood talent agency.

Sanchez and Whitesell had been married since 2005, but at the time the news broke, the couple had been separated since the fall, according to Page Six

The couple was friends with Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos because they had houses near each other in Seattle, Page Six reported.

The National Enquirer said it had conducted a four-month investigation into Bezos and Sanchez's relationship and had obtained texts and photos the couple had sent to each other.

The Enquirer said it had tracked the couple "across five states and 40,000 miles, tailed them in private jets, swanky limos, helicopter rides, romantic hikes, five-star hotel hideaways, intimate dinner dates and 'quality time' in hidden love nests."

Page Six, which published the news a few hours before the Enquirer, reported that Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos knew that the Enquirer report was coming out and had timed their divorce announcement to get ahead of the news.

The gossip site also reported at the time that Bezos and Sanchez started dating after Jeff and MacKenzie had separated the previous fall, and that MacKenzie knew of the relationship.

The Enquirer said it had gotten its hands on "raunchy messages" and "erotic selfies," including a text that reportedly read: "I love you, alive girl." The tabloid said it also had racy photos of both Bezos and Sanchez, including one that was too explicit to print.

Source: Business Insider

Almost immediately, questions arose about the Enquirer's motives for investigating Bezos and Sanchez and the tabloid's connection to President Trump.

A feud has simmered for years between Trump and Bezos, who also owns the Washington Post, a frequent Trump target. The Enquirer's publisher, AMI, is run by David Pecker, a longtime Trump ally.

By the end of January, The Daily Beast reported that Bezos was funding an investigation into who had leaked his private messages to the Enquirer. Bezos' personal head of security, Gavin de Becker, headed up the investigation. De Becker said at the time that he thought the leaks were "politically motivated," which AMI denied

The investigation initially pointed to Michael Sanchez, Lauren's brother and an outspoken Trump supporter, as the person who leaked the photos and texts, which Sanchez denied

Then, in February, Bezos dropped a bombshell of his own: an explosive blog post titled "No thank you, Mr. Pecker," in which he accused Pecker and AMI of trying to blackmail him.

Bezos wrote that the publisher had been threatening him with the publication of explicit photos he'd taken of himself unless he stopped investigating who was leaking his photos and texts to the tabloid.

AMI also demanded that Bezos no longer claim the publisher's investigation into his personal life was influenced by political motivations, Bezos wrote.

As a result, Bezos published the emails he'd received from AMI.

"Rather than capitulate to extortion and blackmail, I've decided to publish exactly what they sent me, despite the personal cost and embarrassment they threaten," Bezos wrote.

Bezos also hinted in the post that there may have been a link between the investigation into his relationship with Sanchez and the Saudi Arabian government — specifically, that he might have been a target of the Saudis because he owns the Washington Post, which provided "unrelenting coverage," Bezos said, of the murder of its journalist, Jamal Khashoggi, who was killed by Saudi agents. The "Saudi angle" of Bezos' own investigation into the leaks seemed to have "hit a particularly sensitive nerve" with Pecker, Bezos wrote.

For its part, the Saudi Arabian government denied any role in the situation and called the whole saga a "soap opera."

Things quieted down for Bezos and Sanchez publicly for a few months, until April, when Jeff and MacKenzie finalized the terms of their divorce.

Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos both released statements on Twitter saying they had "finished the process of dissolving" their marriage and would be co-parenting their four kids.

MacKenzie said she was granting Jeff all her interests in the Washington Post and Blue Origin, as well as 75% of the Amazon stock they owned and voting control over the shares she retained. Her remaining stake in Amazon is estimated to be worth about $38 billion, placing her among the richest women in the world, according to Forbes.

One day later, Sanchez and Whitesell filed for divorce.

TMZ reported at the time that the couple asked for joint custody of their two children. The couple reportedly finalized their divorce in October.

The Bezos divorce was finalized in July. A few days later, Bezos and Sanchez made their first public appearance as a couple at Wimbledon.

The couple was seated behind the royals at the men's Wimbledon final between Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic at the All England Club.

The pair was spotted again in August on what appeared to be a fabulous European vacation: They were seen strolling through Saint-Tropez and cruising off the coast of Spain, in the Balearic Islands, aboard media mogul David Geffen's superyacht, the Rising Sun.

Other guests reportedly included Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein and the founder of Thrive Capital, Josh Kushner, along with his supermodel wife, Karlie Kloss. (The group was pictured in an Instagram post that has since been deleted.)

Bezos and Sanchez were then seen on fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg's sailing yacht off the coast of Italy. The couple appears to be close friends with von Furstenberg and her husband, IAC Chairman Barry Diller.

In December, Bezos reportedly threw Sanchez an elaborate 50th birthday celebration that included both a private dinner and a star-studded party attended by von Furstenberg and Diller, Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom, and Timothée Chalamet.

Around the holidays, the couple jetted off to French-speaking Caribbean island St. Barths, relaxing on yachts and meandering around the island with Sanchez's son, Nikko Gonzalez.

In January, Sanchez accompanied Bezos on a trip to India.

Sanchez attended Bezos' visit to Mahatma Gandhi's tomb and walked the red carpet with Bezos at an Amazon Prime Video event in Mumbai.

A few weeks later, Sanchez traveled with Bezos to another international event — this time, a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, France.

Since February, Bezos has been embroiled in a legal spat with Michael Sanchez, Lauren Sanchez's brother.

Sanchez filed a defamation lawsuit against Bezos in February, claiming Bezos and his security consultant, Gavin de Becker, falsely accused him of providing Bezos' nude photos to the National Enquirer. Sanchez claimed in the suit that Bezos told journalists he had handed over the images to the tabloid, but he says he never had the photos in his possession.

Bezos said in a court filing of his own that the suit amounted to "extortion" and directly threatened free speech. Bezos sought to dismiss Sanchez's lawsuit under a California law that's intended to protect against frivolous lawsuits.

A judge has since tossed Sanchez's defamation suit, citing a lack of evidence.

In the lawsuit, Sanchez used the word "fiancé" to describe Bezos' relationship to Lauren Sanchez, implying that the couple is engaged.

Here's the full sentence from the lawsuit (emphasis ours):

"While Mr. de Becker's initial asserted theory was that Mr. Sanchez had sold out his sister for $200,000, Mr. de Becker soon realized this theory would not hold up because, among other reasons, it was inconceivable that Mr. Sanchez would ruin his relationship with his sister and her current fiancé, the richest man in the world, for financial gain."

Bezos isn't described as Sanchez's fiancé anywhere else in the suit, and Bezos and Sanchez have never confirmed that they're engaged. In December, Page Six published photos of the couple on vacation, noting that Sanchez was wearing a large diamond ring on her right hand (engagement rings are worn on the left hand).

At the time lawyers for Michael Sanchez said in a statement, "Michael's complaint speaks for itself." Representatives for Bezos and Sanchez did not respond to requests for comment.

News broke in February 2020 that Bezos had reportedly purchased the Warner estate, a massive Beverly Hills compound, for $165 million. The purchase was the most expensive home sale in California history.

Prior to the sale, The New York Post reported that Bezos and Sanchez had been house-hunting in Los Angeles and touring mansions throughout the area for weeks.

The Warner estate was built by Hollywood mogul and Warner Bros. cofounder Jack Warner in 1937. It spans eight acres and is situated in the Benedict Canyon neighborhood of Beverly Hills. It's an incredibly private property that's surrounded by tall hedges, blocked off by a large gate, and completely hidden from view from the street.

The compound is home to multiple dwellings, including two guesthouses and a 13,600-square-foot mansion. The estate also features a pool, tennis court, and manicured gardens, as well as a nine-hole golf course and a "motor court" with its own garage and gas pumps, according to Architectural Digest

Then, in July, Bezos appeared to make another purchase, this time right next door: a $10 million home that shares a hedge line with the Warner estate. According to property records viewed by both Variety and Daily Mail, Bezos is the new owner of the 1930s-era home on a side street in Beverly Hills' Benedict Canyon neighborhood.

9 retail brands that are prime M&A targets in 2021, according to experts

Summary List Placement

2020 forced many retailers to look hard at their physical store footprint and rethink e-commerce. 2021 could be the year many specialty retailers like Gamestop and Lululemon take a look at something else: being acquired.

These specialty retailers are in the middle of the spectrum of retailers. They aren't chains like Krogers and CVS that sell essentials and have boomed during the pandemic. But they also aren't facing the severe hardships of brands like JC Penney or Macy's, which suffer from undifferentiated brand identity and a lack of clear focus.

"All the guys in the middle are going to go through the holiday, try to collect as much cash as possible, but then I'm sure there's conversations around one of two things," Lee Peterson, an executive vice president at WD Partners, told Insider in December.

On one hand, retailers and brands could consider selling to a private equity player, likely a good play for investors but riskier for its long-term reputation, Peterson said. On the other, they could "circle the wagons a little bit and merge with other like-minded companies," he said.

"There are so many retailers and brands that are just hanging on by a thread and hoping that time will be on their side," said Carol Spieckerman, a retail analyst and consultant.

Retailers with a strong private label selection or that offer services that rivals don't will be particularly attractive targets, Spieckerman said. Chains like Macy's, which have their own private labels but rely heavily on branded merchandise, are unlikely to draw M&A interest, she said.

"Are you buying a viable brand, or are you buying a place with a brand that has brands?" she said. "You could argue that Macy's still somewhat enjoys its own brand identity, but increasingly, it's not particularly differentiated."

Retailers with recognizable brands but a string of poor recent results due to the pandemic are likely to make the best targets in 2021, said Bahige El-Rayes, a partner at Kearney's consumer and retail practice. "If everything is devalued anyway, you're not going to go for something that is distressed," he said.

Business Insider asked retail analysts and experts which retailers and brands they think might be ripe for deals in 2021. Here are 9 companies they pointed to:

Lululemon

Lululemon has benefited from demand for workout and casual wear during the pandemic, and its most recent earnings show it: Sales were up 22% for the quarter ended November 1.

But having so many stores in malls increasingly represents a liability for the brand, Peterson said, especially with mall anchors at risk of bankruptcy or closing stores. A buyer like VF Corporation, which already makes products under the labels like Vans, North Face, and Timberland, could give Lululemon additional cash and resources to expand its e-commerce business and find new places to sell.

"If you're Lululemon, you're saying 'Oh, maybe I don't want to have so much presence at the mall going forward,'" he said.

Abercrombie & Fitch

Analysts have been pointing to Abercrombie & Fitch as a potential deal target since before the pandemic, saying that it could give rivals like American Eagle Outfitters or even Amazon some brands popular with young adults as well as a wide sourcing network.

Now, Abercrombie might have more of a reason to sell as mall anchor stores like Macy's appear to be on increasingly unstable footing, Peterson said. Many have to answer the question: "When all the anchors go, what's this [place] going to be?"

That could spur consolidation with another apparel retailer or even a deal with a private equity buyer with a reputation for turning around retailers, he added.

Sales at Abercrombie fell 5% for the third quarter.

Gap has picked up the pace of store closures during the pandemic. While it started the year planning to shutter 225 locations between its Gap and Banana Republic banners, it added another 350 to the list in October.

But the chain's group of brands, which also includes Old Navy, aren't necessarily irrelevant to consumers and could be appealing to a buyer who could work with a smaller store base and do more online, Spieckerman said.

"A brand like Gap would offer portfolio and platform to any acquirer," she added.

GameStop

Video game sales have shifted online over the last decade, with streaming and digital downloads capturing an increasing share of the market.

GameStop, meanwhile, still relies on physical stores for a majority of its revenue. Net sales were down more than 30% during GameStop's most recent quarter, which ended in October.

Yet the company has made some moves into the digital realm, including an agreement with Microsoft that gives the chain a portion of every game purchase made on all Xbox consoles GameStop sells. E-commerce sales have also grown to nearly one-fifth of total revenue.

While some analysts have cautioned that GameStop risks going the way of Blockbuster if it doesn't find its place online soon enough, Spieckerman said that the brand could have value for a larger retailer.

"Right now, GameStop is still a viable brand in the gaming space," Spieckerman said. "You could do something with that brand."

The Children's Place

Back-to-school time has traditionally been a key selling season for The Children's Place. In 2020, as more kids attended school online, fewer parents needed to buy fresh outfits, leading to sales 19% lower for the quarter ending in October.

As a retailer focused narrowly on clothing for young children, the company appeals to a specific group of consumers, Spieckerman said. That makes it potentially a good fit for a buyer-focused on turnarounds, such as Retail Ecommerce Ventures, whose current portfolio includes off-price chain Stein Mart, apparel retailer Dressbarn and Modell's Sporting Goods.

"I don't see any reason why The Children's Place or some of these much more specialized players wouldn't be good targets for them, because that seems to be their strategy," she said.

Capri Holdings

Michael Kors, Versace, and Jimmy Choo have struggled in recent months as in-person shopping and international travel has dried up.

They also have another trait in common: All are owned by London-based Capri Holdings.

Capri took its current form in 2018 when Michael Kors bought Italian label Versace and consolidated operations under the Capri name. Before that, Michael Kors acquired Jimmy Choo in 2017.

While Chinese consumers, a key group for many luxury brands, have kept buying handbags, clothes, and other luxury goods in China during the pandemic, that hasn't made up entirely for lost sales as far fewer take vacations in Europe or the Americas.

"An acquisition of one of those portfolio companies would yield access to multiple brands," Spieckerman said. "It's going to be interesting to see if some of those companies, particularly in the apparel space become acquisition targets for companies that want to get instant diversification."

Ulta

"I think Amazon has always been interested in Kohl's and, subsequently, Ulta, because they have physical spaces that are not in malls," Peterson told Business Insider.

Ulta's store network includes both locations near traditional malls as well as stores in strip centers, which have done better in recent years.

That diversification could be appealing to acquirers looking for a store footprint outside of shopping centers, though often still close to them. And Ulta is no stranger to working with other retailers: It recently agreed to open 100 beauty shops within Target stores in 2021.

Sales at Ulta fell nearly 8% during the company's third quarter.

Rite Aid

Health and wellness have long been areas where retailers are trying to do more, but the pandemic has made them even more important.

Rite Aid has done relatively well during the pandemic: Revenue was up nearly 12% for the lasted quarter ended in August as more consumers turned to its stores, which occupy a wider range of locations than most retailers, from shopping centers to residential areas.

The company could be especially open to being bought given its history. In 2015, Walgreens announced a plan to acquire the rival drug store chain in its entirety. Over the following two years, though, regulatory concerns forced the companies to scale back their ambitions, and Walgreens ended up acquiring a fraction of Rite Aid's network.

The result is a smaller Rite Aid that could be easier for a big box retailer to justify buying, especially at a time when wellness is getting a lot of attention. "Everybody's trying to get a piece of the action and stretch into it," Spieckerman said of the category.

Macy's

In 2020, Macy's made thousands of layoffs, and its most quarterly same-store sales declined 20% as many shoppers were reluctant to come back to stores.

A private equity deal could be in the cards for 2021, Peterson said, if a landlord doesn't come to the rescue as in the case of JC Penney earlier this year.

"The private equity hawks are going to swoop in and try to buy as much of this stuff as possible over the course of the next year," he said.
