HOUSE OF THE DAY: Gianni Versace's Bonkers Miami Mansion Gets Price-Chopped To $100 Million

gianni versace miami house $125 million

Late fashion designer Gianni Versace's Miami mansion just took a huge 20 percent price chop, according to The Wall Street Journal

The home, which was put on the market earlier this year for $125 million, is now just $100 million.

A special type of buyer will go after this place — it's truly wild.

Versace bought the home in 1992 for $10 million and then invested $33 million in the property, adding a 6,100-square-foot south wing, a 54-foot-long mosaic-tiled pool lined with 24-karat gold, a mosaic-covered courtyard, and frescoes on the home's walls and ceiling.

The house has 10 bedrooms and 11 bathrooms, and overlooks the ocean.

Called Casa Casuarina, it was transformed into a boutique hotel after Versace's death.

The listing agent told Forbes that they had already received about 15 calls inquiring into the property back in June, but clearly none panned out.

Jill Eber, the listing agent, told The WSJ that the seller, Telecom entrepreneur Peter Loftin, lowered the price "to open it up to more prospective buyers, just as Miami hits its busy selling season."

Welcome to 1116 Ocean Drive.

The listing agents, The Jills, produced a comprehensive video tour of the property.

A morbid fact: Versace was killed outside the house in 1997.

oil, gas crisis, 1973

As New York City faces gas rationing, shortages, and lines in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, we can't stop thinking of the oil crisis of 1973-1974.

That much larger and longer (we hope) crisis occured when the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries proclaimed an oil embargo in response to U.S. support of Israel during the Yom Kippur war. The embargo went in effect in October 1973 and oil prices immediately jumped from $3 per barrel to $12.

What followed were massive gas shortages and panic, gas stations serving by appointment only to regular customers or closed altogether, and severe restrictiong on electricity use.

Gas stations abandoned during the fuel crisis in the winter of 1973-74 were sometimes used for other purposes. This station at Potlatch, Washington, west of Olympia was turned into a religious meeting hall.

Secret Service

They're the guys in suits surrounding the President of the United States, ready to take a bullet to protect the leader of the free world.

See the Secret Service >

But that wasn't always their main role. President Abraham Lincoln created the United States Secret Service (USSS) to deal with the mad influx of counterfeit money after the Civil War. A move ironically made just hours before he was assassinated April 14,1865. Four months later the Service was fully operational.

In the 2004 run up to the presidential election George W. Bush spoke at Louisiana State University (LSU), where National Geographic took a closer look at the Secret Service for a documentary titled "Inside the US Secret Service." The film follows the president's advance team as it works with local law enforcement making sure every threat is addressed before the president arrives.

National Geographic doesn't spill all the secrets, but what they let us in on is pretty cool.

Much of the country's top intelligence work takes place in this unmarked Washington, D.C. building

The United States Secret Service can't afford to underestimate the enemy in their mandate to protect the man, protect the symbol and protect the office.

Qualia Hotel

What does it take to be Condé Nast Traveler's best hotel in the world? Turns out, you need a perfect score of 100 like the Qualia hotel on Hamilton Island, overlooking the Great Barrier Reef.

This year's best hotel was determined by a reader's choice survey and received perfect ratings across the board for its rooms, service, food, location, design, and activities.

The adults-only retreat has 60 pavilions with floor-to-ceiling windows, infinity-edge plunge pools, an expert chef, and access to staggeringly beautiful beaches. Qualia retails from AUD $975 ($1,103 US) per night for a standard pavilion to AUD $4,200 ($4,365 US) for the beach house during the tourist season.

This is not the first award for the luxury resort, which has also previously won World Travel Awards' Australia's Leading Resort title in 2012, and made it onto the UK Condé Nast Traveler Gold List last year.

Qualia is located in an exclusive precinct on Hamilton Island's northern-most tip, and has 60 private pavilions that look out onto the Coral Sea and Whitsunday Islands.

15 Lessons From The Greatest Business Failures Of All Time

People learn best from failure. It drives lessons home like nothing else.

The paradox is that in business, failure can be extremely costly. A new book from Laurence Weinzimmer and Jim McConoughey, "The Wisdom Of Failure" shows that it's possible to learn the lessons of the greatest business failures without having to go them yourself.

The authors look through some of the great failures of the past, surveyed hundreds of executives, and talked to industry leaders. We've broken out some of the key tips.

Thanks to the publisher for allowing us to feature the book

Don't let your ego keep you from knowing when to quit.

After significant financial, emotional, or psychological investment in something, leaders can have an incredibly difficult time writing it off. News Corp. spent $580 million on MySpace in 2006 and poured investment into it for years and years as it bled market share to Facebook. It was eventually sold for $34 million.

The idea of being first and the idea of the turnaround are extremely seductive, but the greatest leaders have learned when to quit from the times that they failed.

Source: "The Wisdom Of Failure"

Remember that nobody wants the "most efficient cigarette in the world."

R.J. Reynolds spent more than a billion dollars developing the "Premier," a cigarette that used a complicated system that made it cleaner burning and less toxic to smokers. Smokers hated it. It tasted strange, was hard to light, and made them have to inhale harder. They created the world's most efficient cigarette that nobody wanted.

The best leaders don't make assumptions about customers, they serve them.

Source: "The Wisdom Of Failure"

Learn to say no to a quick buck.

The CEO of LA Gear grew his company from $11 to $820 million in sales in just four years by focusing on unique, fashionable shoes that were expertly marketed. But chasing three high dollar opportunities killed the company. They sold excess product at deep discounts which diminished the brand, invested heavily outside of its core competency in basketball shoes, and offered low-end shoes at Wal-Mart. The CEO couldn't say no to chasing more money, and paid the price for it.

The ability to say "no" to what looks like a lucrative opportunity is one of the most important traits a leader can possess.

The Miami Heat's LeBron James will make more money in endorsements this year than he will get from his NBA contract.

NBA players are the representatives for everything from the performance apparel to food companies to automobiles. And all of those companies are willing to shell out ridiculous amounts of money for specific players to endorse their products.

Audi's $110,000 S8 Is An Amazing Living Room On Wheels

Audi 2013 S6 S7 S8

At an Audi event in late October, I had the chance to drive the 2013 S6, S7, and S8. All are impressive cars. The S6 and S7 are very similar, with minor differences in design and performance.

But the S8 is something else. The "dressed up" version of the A8, it is the most luxurious car I have ever driven. It is nicer and more comfortable than my living room.

The short list of features includes massage seats, myriad driver assistance technologies, an excellent sound system by Bang & Olufsen, and a cruise control system that can almost make the driver irrelevant.

On top of all that, it is a hugely powerful car that is a ton of fun to drive. Read my full review, or check out photos of the luxury ride.

Disclosure: Audi provided travel and meals for us to drive the S6, S7, and S8 models at Monteverde at Oldstone in Cortlandt Manor, New York.

The fully loaded S8 I drove was worth $128,295, enough to make me very careful on mountain roads.

The front seats are heated, ventilated, and even have massage functions - great for a really relaxing drive.

The lines of the interior are meant to "wrap you up," product manager Anthony Foulk said.

What Marijuana Does To Your Body And Mind

$
0
0

Marijuana

With the recreational use of marijuana about to be legal in two states, Colorado and Washington, we thought now would be an important time to refresh ourselves about the effects that the drug has on our bodies and minds.

Marijuana comes from the cannais sativa plant, and is the dried and shredded leaves, stems seeds and flowers. The high you get from marijuana comes from a chemical called Tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as THC. Some strains contain more or less THC — making them more or less potent.

Most of THC's effects happen in the brain, where the chemical interacts with receptors on brain cells called cannibinoid receptors. Our bodies actually make chemicals very similar to THC, which are used in normal brain function and development. THC co-opts these natural pathways to produce most of its effects.

The drug is also touted for its uses for multiple diseases.

Marijuana makes you feel good

When THC hits brain cells, it causes them to release dopamine, a feel-good brain chemical. This is a part of the brain's reward system, which makes you feel good when you do things that ensure the survival of yourself and your offspring. These things include eating and having sex.

When over-excited by drugs, the reward system creates feelings of euphoria.

.. but that's not all good

When the rewards system is overstimulated, for example with drugs of abuse like cocaine, it can go haywire and cause a dependence (and in extreme cases addiction) on whatever is providing the rewarding feeling, and also take away from how rewarding normal things, like eating, are.

This can cause apathy and dependence on the drug.

It blocks memory formation

The active ingredient in marijuana acts in the part of the brain called the hippocampus to alter the way information is processed and how memories are formed. Animal studies have shown that this is particularly true while the brain is still developing— specifically why the legal smoking age is 21 in the states that have legalized it.

This blockage of memory formation can cause cognitive impairment in adulthood if use happens during adolescence, at least for rats. It can also quicken age-related brain cell loss, though marijuana has been shown to slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease.

Here's How James Bond Made The DB5 The Coolest Aston Martin Ever

bond 007 skyfall aston martin db5 history

James Bond is returning to American theaters today in "Skyfall," and the secret agent is back in the car that most defines him: the Aston Martin DB5.

In the 50 years since "Dr. No" hit theaters, James Bond has driven Jaguars, Alfa Romeos, Audis, Bentleys and more.

But ever since Sean Connery drove a DB5 in "Goldfinger," Aston Martin has been the true Bond car.

Since then, various Bonds have had various Aston Martins, but none really compare to the original.

And while 007 may abstain from martinis in "Skyfall" (in favor of Heineken), he does respect his driving roots, going back to the DB5.

The DB5 entered production in 1963. It was named for David Brown, the English industrialist who bought Aston Martin in 1947.

In 1964, a 5-speed manual cost £4,247 after taxes ($86,850 in 2012 USD).

David Brown had a shooting brake version made for him; the larger body style provided space for his hunting dogs and shooting gear.

The Cuddle Sutra does, in fact, exist.

Written by Rob Grader and published by Sourcebooks, "The Cuddle Sutra: An Unabashed Celebration of the Ultimate Intimacy" shows different positions for the art of snuggling, which actually has various alleged health benefits.

The newest vessel will cost American taxpayers about $1.5 billion and is designed to be the the most survivable amphibious assault ship ever designed.

While the Defense Department's director of evaluations doesn't agree, and thinks the ship's critical systems aren't reliable, and the ship will crumble against an attack — it didn't stop the Pentagon from purchasing one more — last week.

Given the ship's weighty cost and its debatable abilities we thought we'd take a look at what the Pentagon's getting for the taxpayers' dollars.

9 Things You Didn't Know About The Beatles

$

The Beatles

While they may be one of the most well-known bands in music history, we bet there are still some things you don't know about this notorious British band.

For example, do you know what inspired the song "She Said She Said"? Click through the slideshow to find out.

Before Lennon/McCartney there was McCartney/Lennon

If you pick up a Beatles album today, you’ll notice the songs are credited to Lennon-McCartney, in alphabetical order, thanks to a longstanding agreement between the two songwriters whereby each would get full credit no matter who came up with the tune or lyric first. But this alphabetical listing was not always the case. The credits on their first album, Please Please Me, list the eight original compositions to McCartney-Lennon. One reason for this could be that Paul McCartney wrote “P.S. I Love You” and “Love Me Do,” the first two songs on the album. The McCartney-Lennon credit would appear twice more on McCartney’s 1976 live album, Wings Over America, and once again on 2002’s Back in the U.S., albeit much to Yoko Ono’s disapproval.

The Ed Sullivan Show was not The Beatles’ American TV debut

For that matter, CBS can’t really claim bragging rights, NBC can. Yes, it’s true: NBC scooped CBS, as The Beatles made their American television debut on NBC’s evening news show, The Huntley-Brinkley Report, not The Ed Sullivan Show, nor Walter Cronkite’s evening news. Although virtually unknown in America at the time, the band was causing mass hysteria in England and all three U.S. television networks sent camera crews to film their November 16, 1963 concert in Bournemouth. NBC used the footage in a four-minute segment on November 18th, but CBS waited until November 22nd to air the story during its morning newscast with Mike Wallace. The network planned to air the story on its evening newscast as well, but just hours after the Beatles story was broadcast, Walter Cronkite broke the news that President Kennedy had been shot in Dallas. On December 10th, Cronkite aired the Beatles segment during prime-time, which set into motion the Beatlemania that culminated with their February 1964 performances on The Ed Sullivan Show.

Eric Clapton almost replaced George

And then there were three… For five days in January of 1969, the Fab Four were a lonesome trio. George Harrison, the “quiet Beatle,” as the media called him, decided to bow out after months of personal differences with his fellow bandmates. A serious songwriter who penned classics like “Something” and “Here Comes the Sun,” Harrison felt he was being ignored by Lennon and McCartney, who played his tunes with little enthusiasm. On January 10, 1969, Harrison finally had enough and quit the band. His announcement caused John Lennon to quip, “If he doesn’t come back by Tuesday, we get Eric Clapton.” Harrison, of course, came to his senses, and returned to the band on January 15th, allowing The Beatles to move forward with their recording of a little-know album called Abbey Road.

9 Indie App Developers Who Are Changing The Mobile World

$

olliwang

Some of the biggest app blockbusters on your smartphone or tablet came from

Take Instagram, for example. The company only had a dozen or so employees when Facebook bought it for a cool $1 billion.

So who are the people working on the next big hit? We took a look at some of the best independent developers doing the coolest things in mobile.

Daniel Mendes de Oliveira of Box Fish wants to change how you interact with TV

Daniel Mendes de Oliveira works at Boxfish, a new company that is challenging how we interact with our cable boxes.

Boxfish believes there is a huge navigation and discovery problem with TV and the Boxfish app allows users to engage with the content on TV as it happens.

At Boxfish, Oliveria is head of Front End Development. Previously, Oliveria was the founder of the Brazilian company DooIT, which was acquired by Boxfish in mid-2011.

Boxfish says Oliveria is, "a true ninja of front end development." He is now based in Palo Alto, just a few blocks away from Boxfish's HQ.

Boxfish is free and available for iPhone and iPod touch.

Olli Wang turns real-world discovery into a game

Olli Wang is the developer of the innovative app, Fog of World. Together with designer Sheri Huang, he runs Ollix, a creative and active software development company in Taiwan.

Fog of World turns walking around into a game. The app challenges you to uncover a world map simply by exploring your surroundings. As you move through an area, fog lifts from the map on your mobile device. It's a great way to remember all the places you've been.

Wang says his dream is to travel around the world and be a great photographer, and he created the app to help him do that.

The app's name comes from the video game term "fog of war," where unexplored territory is grayed out. The more you explore, the more you clear away the fog.

Fog of World is available for iPhone for $4.99.

Marco Arment redefined how we read articles online

Marco Arment is the developer of Instapaper, the app that lets you save online articles and read them later on your smartphone or tablet.

Arment developed Instapaper by himself and launched the app in January 2008. It has since become a staple on mobile devices.

Recently, Arment launched an iOS app called The Magazine, which is a monthly publication about technology.

If Arment's venture into digital publishing pays off like his Instapaper success, this indie developer may be on the verge of disrupting another industry.

Instapaper is available for the iPhone and iPad for $3.99. You can download it for Android devices for $2.99.

The Magazine is a free download in Apple's App Store. Subscriptions are $1.99 per month with a free 7-day trial.

China has begun its once-in-a-decade handover of power to the 'fifth generation' of China's communist party leaders. In preparation for the event, Beijing has enacted bizarre security measures and has put up a giant TV screen in Tiananmen Square running propaganda videos.

In fact, this year marks the 91st year since the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Click here to jump straight to the posters >

With that in mind we went back in time and dredged up propaganda posters that the Communist Party has put out since the 1950s.

These include posters from the Great Leap Forward, a social and economic movement under Mao Zedong that saw the collectivization of agriculture and attempted a rapid industrialization of the economy but failed. The Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) which saw Mao try to enforce communism through the land. And in the years following Mao's death.
