Contrary to the outfits of most cheerleaders, NBA uniforms have gotten less, and less revealing every year.

Back in the 1950's, NBA stars showed off some serious leg and sported tight tank tops and converse sneakers.

These days, NBAers have much baggier uniforms and rock fancy Nike's.

GRANTHAM: We're Headed For A Disaster Of Biblical Proportions

$

black plague

Last year, legendary investor Jeremy Grantham of GMO published a treatise on exploding commodity prices.

He also offered a startlingly depressing outlook for the future of humanity.

Grantham believes the world has undergone a permanent "paradigm shift" in which the number of people on Earth has finally and permanently outstripped the planet's ability to support us.

The phenomenon of ever-more humans using a finite supply of natural resources cannot continue forever, Grantham says--and the prices of metals, hydrocarbons (oil), and food are now beginning to reflect that.

Grantham believes that the planet can only sustainably support about 1.5 billion humans, versus the 7 billion on Earth right now (heading to 10-12 billion). For all of history except the last 200 years, the human population has been controlled via the limits of the food supply. Grantham thinks that, eventually, the same force will come into play again.

The hope of the optimists, of course, is that science will find a solution to this problem, the way it has for the past 150 years.

Let's hope so.

In the meantime, here's a snapshot of Grantham's argument, along with his key points at the end.

In the past 200 years, the world population has exploded--just as Malthus predicted. What Malthus did not foresee was the discovery of oil and other natural resources, which have (temporarily) supported this population explosion. Those resources are now getting used up...

For the past 100 years, the prices of commodities have trended downward, as technology has made them cheaper to extract and produce. Grantham thinks that trend has now permanently ended.

Looking at oil, for example... Oil traded at about $16 a barrel for 100 years. Then, as demand outstripped supply, the paradigm shifted--to ~$35 a barrel. Now, Grantham thinks, the paradigm has shifted again, to a central value of about ~$75 a barrel

How To Manipulate Consumers Into Craving Your Product

$

lifting weights

Getting a customer to buy your product is one thing. Getting them to buy that product on a weekly basis is another entirely.

How to do it >

New York Times business reporter and author Charles Duhigg uncovers the psychology behind what makes customer and employee  behavior turn into habit in his best selling book, The Power Of Habit.

Here are ten of Duhigg's best lessons for using the power of routine and habit to grow your business.

Habits put your brain on autopilot until you're so used to the motions that there's no need to think.

Habits are cyclical processes. There's a cue, routine and reward. It's called "The Habit Loop."

Almost every American wakes up and brushes their teeth in the morning. The cue could be waking up or feeling like your breath is stale. Then comes the routine of actually brushing your teeth. Finally, the reward of having a clean smile. This process is something most people barely think about.

Source: "The Power of Habit"

To create a habit that sticks for customers, you have to create a cue.

Toothpaste didn't always exist. In fact it wasn't originally marketed as a way to keep your teeth healthy and clean. People selling toothpaste cued customers by prompting them to run their tongues across their teeth to feel a film. This created the cue and the solution was simple; buy toothpaste and brush your teeth.

The cue created a habit that spread across America and became a routine in most households today. So when people run out of toothpaste, they will always buy more — creating a product with constant demand.

Source: "The Power of Habit"

More importantly, make sure your customers notice that cue.

Febreze was originally marketed with the line "Gets bad smells out of fabrics" and it targeted people who had really bad smells in their homes like a woman who lived with multiple cats. The product flopped when targeting this type of customer because their senses were dulled and immune to the bad smells.

So, there was no cue and the habit didn't get started. The product got pushed to the back of the closet.

We Checked Out The New 'Zig Zag' Building In Midtown West That Was Made For Young Professionals

Young professionals in Manhattan are flocking to the new Mercedes House on 54th Street between 10th and 11th Avenues. The building gets its name from its location above the flagship Mercedes dealer on 11th Avenue.

You can't tell from street level, but the building resembles a gigantic "Z" shape zigzagging skyward from the street. It was conceived by Mexican architect Enrique Norten, who also designed the Cassa Hotel & Residences in Midtown and the Guggenheim Museum in Guadalajara, Mexico..

Hell's Kitchen is starting to bustle, with ultra-luxury highrise One57 opening later this year and more restaurants and venues opening in the area.

The apartments at Mercedes have been rolled out in two phases, with the second part of the building opening this past summer.

The building features studios, 1-bedroom, and 2-bedroom units, with rents starting at $2,925 for a studio and reaching $5,200 for a 2-bedroom. The complex also has an awesome amenities floor with a huge gym, two pools, and an outdoor movie theater.

We recently stopped by for a tour.

The Mercedes House is shaped like a Z, which can be seen from overhead.

The Colbert Report is filmed right down the street.

The building has 480 rental units, which have been released in two phases — one in May 2011, and one this past summer.

One of the best places to gather in a home is the kitchen. It's where meals are made and entertaining begins.

In fact, The Wall Street Journal even recently claimed that the kitchen is the "new great room," measuring as much as 3,000 square feet in newly built mansions.

But you don't need a mansion to have a kitchen with some cool amenities like a hidden refrigerator or gadget-filled island. In honor of the ultimate kitchen holiday we're taking a look at some of the sweetest kitchens in homes currently on the market.

The open kitchen in this Southern California home, on sale for $20 million, has great views of the water. And the mix of stone and wood is lovely.

The kitchen inside of this $800,000 Saratoga Springs home is very funky. We're impressed by the stainless steel range. Sitting at a round booth table like that looks like a great way to facilitate family conversations.

12 Fantasy Football Tips For Week 12

$

Marcel Reece Oakland Raiders

The NFL's bye weeks are officially over, which means that the regular season's final stretch run is here. And it probably means that your fantasy league has only a few weeks left before playoffs.

With all the teams back in action it's nice to have a wealth of options to consider in your lineup, but it could also be an issue trying to narrow down your options.

We've done our best to try and help you pick and choose which players deserve your starting nod this week and others who we feel could negatively effect your final score.

The advice is based on standard 10-team leagues.

START: Andy Dalton, Cincinnati Bengals Quarterback vs OAK

Dalton is quietly one of the most efficient fantasy quarterbacks in the league this season, and likely the only player in the Top 10 of his position that is benched more often than he is in team's starting lineups.

He averages a respectable two touchdowns per game and goes against a forgiving Oakland defense this weekend.

Season Total: 221/344, 2,559 yards, 20 TDs, 11 INTs

28 carries, 88 yards, 2 TDs

SIT: Eli Manning, New York Giants Quarterback vs GB

Eli Manning has had a week to think about three straight lackluster performances, and while I expect Manning to have a better week this weekend, I don't believe he'll necessarily put up numbers worthy of a fantasy start against Green Bay.

Season Total: 223/364, 2,641 yards, 12 TDs, 11 INTs

14 carries, 8 yards

START: Marcel Reece, Oakland Raiders Running Back at CIN

Reece has impressed since filling in for Darren McFadden, who went down with a high ankle sprain a few weeks ago.  He had nearly 200 yards from scrimmage last week against New Orleans and over 100 the week before.

The concern is that he could be slowed by an imposing Bengals defense, but his pass-catching abilities make up for that.

Season Total: 33 carries, 151 yards

37 catches, 418 yards, 1 TD

The Fabulous Life Of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid

$

Harry Reid

Most people know Harry Reid as the quiet Democrat in charge of the Senate. Some consider him boring, but they couldn't be more wrong.

The Harry Reid story is a long one. He's had a remarkable career on his way from miner's son to Senate Majority Leader.

The Senate Majority leader emerged as a liberal favorite during the 2012 campaign with his dogged attacks on Mitt Romney. Now, as Congress  tackles the fiscal cliff, Reid is once again at the center of the national political landscape.

Here's a look at the career that made Reid one of the most important — and fascinating — people in Washington.

Reid had a very interesting childhood.

Reid was born in the small town of Searchlight, Nev., to Harry and Inez Reid. His father was a hard rock miner. His mother did laundry for the 13 brothels in town. Harry learned to swim in the pool at a bordello.

Searchlight didn't have a high school at that time, so Reid boarded in Henderson, Nev., to go to school.

As an adolescent, Reid was a feisty, amateur boxer.

"I was raised where you settled your differences physically,"he told the Las Vegas Review Journal. "I still have a little of that in me and I'm fighting that all the time. I don't want to be mean to people."

Source: Huffington Post, Congressional Biographical Directory

In college, Reid eloped with his high school sweetheart.

Reid became familiar with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints when he was in high school in Henderson.

He went on to attend Utah State University. After his sophomore year, he eloped with his wife Landra, his high school sweetheart, because her Jewish parents did not want her to marry someone outside the faith. They were married in a Mormon chapel, and by the time Reid graduated, both he and his wife had been baptized as Latter-day Saints.

The couple moved to Washington, and Reid worked his way through George Washington University Law School by working nights as a Capitol Police Officer.

Source: Las Vegas Review-Journal

Reid was the youngest lieutenant governor in Nevada history.

Reid was elected to the Nevada State Assembly at age 28 in 1968, and at age 30 was elected the youngest lieutenant governor in Nevada history.

After serving as Lieutenant Governor, Reid took time off to practice law in the state.

sonic the hedgehog, macy's 85th annual thanksgiving day parade, nyc, bi, november 24 2011, dng

Goldman Sachs recently released its Hedge Fund Trend Monitor, a massive report detailing the Q3 investment moves made by the world's biggest hedge funds.

The report included a list of companies for which huge shares of their outstanding stocks are owned by hedge funds.

Interestingly, Goldman found that if you had invested in these stocks, you would have beaten the markets.

From the report:

The strategy of buying the 20 most concentrated stocks has a strong track record over more than 10 years. Since 2001, the strategy has outperformed the market 67% of the time by an average of 255 bp per quarter (not annualized).

A basket of these stocks returned 10% in Q3 and 15% year-to-date.  That compares to 6% and 10%, respectively, for the S&P 500.

We pulled the 20 stocks with the largest hedge fund ownership stakes. All stocks listed have between 17-50% of their outstanding shares owned by hedge funds.

We also included the names of the five hedge funds with the largest stakes.

The 88-Year Evolution Of The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

macy's parade sonic

Over the past 88 years, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade has become an irreplaceable staple of Thanksgiving festivities.

Every year, millions of Americans flock to the streets of Manhattan to see the parade in-person or gather around their television sets to watch the parade from home.

What began as a small Macy's employee-run event has morphed into a huge production that requires almost an entire year's worth of preparation.

Most years, the parade has gone on with little complications, but others, weather delays and balloon-related injuries have created a nightmare for parade officials.

The first Macy's Day Parade was on November 27 in 1924 and was referred to as the Macy's Christmas Parade. The parade originally featured Macy's employees and live animals from the Central Park Zoo. Floats, instead of balloons, were the main attraction.

The parade began in Harlem at 145th Street and ended in front of the Macy's flagship store on 34th Street. It was originally called the Macy's Christmas Parade, but was renamed the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade in 1927.

An estimated 250,000 spectators attended the first parade. Today, about 3.5 million people attend.

What Alcohol Does To Your Body And Mind

$

Alcohol, Booze, Bar, Liquor, luxury, Michael Andrews Bespoke, Studio, Tailor, Custom, Custom Suits, MAB, NYC, Business Insider, dng

While contemplating glugging down a few glasses of wine to get through your family Thanksgiving, it might be a good idea to remember some of these facts about what's not so great about wine —and other alcoholic beverages — the boozy bits.

See what alcohol does to your brain and body >

While alcohol is legal, and some have evidence shows that wine may have positive health effects, alcohol also has immediate effects on the body and brain, and long-term, irreversible health effects.

When you take alcohol into your body — no matter if it is in the form of wine, hard liquor, or beer — it all goes to the same place: Your stomach, then your small intestine.

In the intestines, the alcohol is absorbed into your bloodstream. From there it circulates through your entire body, where it crosses the barrier to get to your brain cells, and impacts countless other organs.

On the bright side, some drinks have ingredients that give them positive health benefits, when taken in moderation, of course. A daily glass of red wine has also been touted as having multiple health benefits.

Alcohol interferes with your brains coordination centers, making you clumsy.

Loss of coordination stems from alcohol's effects on the neurotransmitter GABA in the brain, which turns off some brain cells. Alcohol enhances these inhibitory effects, resulting in sluggish movements and reaction times that can make you lose coordination, Psychology Today explains.

A recent study in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, published Sept. 15, 2011, suggests that damage to the brain's cerebellum from heavy drinking can cause balance problems for years, even after heavy alcoholics sober up.

A drink or two makes you creative and relaxed, but more can loosen your inhibitions too much.

People under the influence of alcohol have decreased brain activity in other areas of the brain too, specifically the prefrontal cortex, Psychology Today reports. This area is responsible for rational thought and decision making, so lowered activity makes you put less thought into your actions and decisions.

This relaxing effect can be helpful at times, when alcohol is taken in moderation. A study in BPS Research Digest, and a second one published in Consciousness and Cognition, suggest that a drink or two could help you perform better at work and make you more creative.

Your brain doesn't make long term memories right when sloshed, making you forget parts of your night.

Alcohol use causes the brain to become a sieve of information — though you are still awake and moving around, large amounts of alcohol stop your brain from being able to make and keep new long-term memories.

The third brain area where alcohol interacts to dumb-down the brain is the temporal cortex, including the hippocampus, a brain region responsible for making new memories, is located.

By averaging three very different statistical metrics — traditional QB rating, ESPN's Total QBR, and Football Outsiders' DYAR— we came up with our own ranking of the best 15 QBs in the league through the first 11 weeks.

What we found was three tiers of QB greatness — with two at the very top, two right below them, and everyone else clumped in the middle.

15. Eli Manning, New York Giants (previously: 4th)

Average ranking: 15.33

QB rating: #22

Total QBR: #12

DYAR: #12

T13. Andrew Luck, Indianapolis Colts (previously: tied 15th)

Average ranking: 14.66

QB rating: #28

Total QBR: #3

DYAR: #13

T13. Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions (previously: 14th)

Average ranking: 14.66

QB rating: #24

Total QBR: #14

DYAR: #9
