25 examples of Peyton Manning's insane competitiveness

peyton manning nfl playoffs

Peyton Manning is one of the most likable athletes in professional sports so it is easy to overlook how insanely competitive he is both on and off the field.

It's that competitiveness that has helped Manning remain one of the best players in the NFL despite being 39 years old and having been through multiple neck surgeries that have left him with a sub-par arm.

The intense anecdotes include what he went through to keep playing after neck surgery, his sneaky first quarterbacks meeting in college, and his crazy work-ethic in high school.

His body is so beat up he has an assistant remove his cleats because "it is a relief to not have to bend over that far," according to Kevin Van Valkenburg. And yet, Manning is still competing at the highest level at age 39 and making another run for his elusive second Super Bowl ring.

In high school, Peyton would practice at 4:30 or 5:00 every morning with his father, Archie Manning, and his brothers, Eli and Cooper.

2x1 Most Generous People 2015 (1)

Pioneering American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie once set the standard for giving back: "No man can become rich without himself enriching others," he said. "The man who dies rich dies disgraced."

Scores of the world's wealthiest people have taken to his philosophy, donating their riches to hundreds of causes.

We worked with our friends at Wealth-X, a firm that does research and valuations on ultra-high net worth individuals, to compile a list of the 20 most generous people in the world, ranked by total charitable giving to date.

Since you need to have a lot to give a lot, Wealth-X also determined each person's Generosity Index, which is the ratio of theirlifetime donations to their current net worth. Some people, like retail magnate Chuck Feeney, known as the"James Bond of philanthropy,"have indices over 100% because they have given away more money than they currently have.

With a total combined donation amount of $106.8 billion, these 20 individuals are the top philanthropists in the world.

I tried a protein bar made out of crickets — here's what it tasted like

IMG_2700.JPGExo is a Brooklyn-based startup that is trying to change the way we think about eating bugs. And the company is starting with cricket protein bars.

Cofounders Greg Sewitz and Gabi Lewis started experimenting with cricket-based food when they were seniors at Brown University, after reading a United Nations report that said eating insects could help combat world hunger.

That might seem like a tough sell to an American audience, but the pair raised a $1.2 million seed round in late 2014 from Collaborative Funds, Tim Ferriss (also an investor in Twitter and Uber), and others. And they are currently have the highest sales in the insect snack space — admittedly it's not that crowded.

The pitch is that with 65% protein content, "cricket flour"— basically ground-up crickets — is much better for the environment that other animal sources. Cows, for example, produce about 100 times the amount of greenhouse gas for the same amount of protein, according to Exo.

But what do the bars taste like?

That’s what we really wanted to know, so we decided to try them out ourselves. The bars are made from certified organic crickets, bred for human consumption, and there are approximately 40 crickets in each bar.

Here’s what they were like.

MARS9

Because of how they appear from afar, we call Mars the Red Planet and Earth the Blue Planet.

But these two worlds don't look so different when you zoom in, which is exactly what scientific satellites do to give researchers information on how different regions of each planet change over time.

We've collected some of these satellites' spectacular images of Mars and Earth and juxtaposed them to test your skills.

Can you tell which is the planet you call home and which is the desolate, lifeless wasteland more than 141 million miles away?

Which photo is of Earth and which of Mars?

Earth is on the right.

During a recent pass over the Australian continent, NASA astronaut Scott Kelly snapped 17 photos from the International Space Station, and they all look insanely alien — almost like certain features on Mars.

Mars is on the left.

When temperatures heat up in the Martian spring, the carbon-dioxide ice in the polar caps sublimates, meaning it changes from its solid form directly to a gas, into the atmosphere, leaving behind these distinct starburst patterns. Why the melting process makes these characteristic patterns is a subject of ongoing research.

(All of the photos of Mars shown here were taken by the HiRISE camera on board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Each Mars photo has false coloring that highlights distinct Martian features, like sand dunes.)

walmart wal-mart demonstrators workers employees wages jobs

Walmart gave investors some bad news on Wednesday.

At its annual investor day, the company cut its outlook for profits over the next two years. It said it expects a drop of 6% to 12% in 2017.

Shares got wrecked, and fell about 10% to log the stock's worst intra-day drop in at least 15 years.

By Thursday, several Wall Street analysts had cut their price targets on the stock, which was down less than 1% in premarket trading near $59.69 per share.

For the most part, Wall Street is recommending investors to hold steady. One is saying to sell. Three say buy.

Here's a roundup of what 13 analysts are saying:

SEE ALSO: WALMART WARNS: Our profits will fall next year

SEE ALSO: Walmart's CEO just revealed troubling news about the economy

Goldman Sachs: NEUTRAL

Rating: Neutral

Price Target: $58 (cut from $67)

Comment: "New guidance reflects three underlying factors, in our view: (1) WMT’s competitive edge, historically largely assortment and price, has faded relative to purveyors of extreme value (clubs, hard discounters) or extreme convenience (dollar stores, hard discounters), as ecommerce has neutralized the impact of selection. (2) Until recently, the firm has been earning respectable returns well in excess of its cost of capital, as other retailers facing competition (BBY/SPLS from AMZN, UK food retail from hard discount) have absorbed sharp declines in ROC. (3) WMT contends it has seen enough return on its investments in labor to justify investing more money into the US business."

Jefferies: NEUTRAL

Rating: Hold

Price Target: $58 (cut from $71)

Comment: "We weren’t expecting a great EPS outlook for FY17 due to higher expenses, but the expected EBIT margin contraction is greater than anticipated. It’s hard to disagree with the actions management is taking and investors could ultimately be rewarded for the tough decisions being made today, but, in the short-term, higher expenses and lower earnings, FCF and ROI are going to keep shares range-bound at new lower levels."

Morgan Stanley: NEUTRAL

Rating: Equal-weight

Price Target: $60 (cut from $68)

Comment: "WMT's transition from a mature retailer to an omni-channel operator is costing more and lasting longer than expected. Not sure it's the last time we'll be saying this."

At age 12, Audrey Glende has found a way to help save lives — fish lives. Glende realized that fish waste produces the toxic chemical ammonia that can accumulate to dangerous amounts in new aquariums.

But by introducing mulm — the unattractive dark brown layer at the bottom of fish tanks — Glende discovered that ammonia-fighting bacteria, which build up over time and are prevalent in older aquariums, could reduce the risk of fish deaths in new aquariums.

Andrew Eggebraaten (14) designed a sophisticated robotic hand.

There are a lot of prosthetics on the market, but there's nothing quite like Andrew Eggebraaten's robotic hand, which can perform 58 different tasks. Even more impressive, the hand responds to voice commands and can change how hard it squeezes an object.

6 small changes to your morning routine that will transform your entire day

$

man sleeping

The first few minutes of your morning are the most important of your day and can set the tone for positivity and productivity.

Ideally, you have an app or clock that taps into your natural circadian rhythm and wakes you during your "best time" within a certain window.

Getting jarred out of a deep REM slumber to the sound of a blaring alarm clock sets you up for a negative day brimming with fatigue and crankiness.

But getting the right alarm clock is only part of the battle.

Here are six ways to start your morning better while kicking bad habits that destroy good sleep hygiene.

SEE ALSO: These Are The Dramatically Different Morning Routines Of People Around The World

Give yourself at least a 15-minute window of no screen time.

Besides turning off an alarm that might be on your phone, resist the urge to check your email or social media.

It sets you up for a day of being enslaved to technology, and your morning time should be reserved just for you.

This might mean disabling notifications on your home screen so you're not tempted by that Facebook notification or mounting emails.

Swap out the coffee for lemon water.

Lukewarm water with a fresh lemon squeezed into it has numerous benefits — but you need to drink it first thing in the morning.

It starts your metabolism to burn the most fat while sustaining muscle, cleanses your mouth and throat, and gives you a boost of energy.

Wait at least 30 minutes before brushing your teeth, drinking or eating afterward. This might be a toughie for caffeine addicts, but you can manage 30 minutes and it's a great way to ease off the coffee fix.

Sit up correctly

There are endless "bad ways" to get out of bed, but only one best way if your body allows for it: Roll over onto your right side, then push yourself up into a sitting position before standing with a straight back (no hunching).

It's the gentlest way to get up, takes the pressure off your heart and back, and is a great, easy ritual to start your morning right.

12 US housing markets getting rocked by foreclosures

The housing market may not be the bright spot of the recovery, especially as more people are starting to lose their homes.

According to the real-estate information company RealtyTrac, foreclosures rose in the third quarter from this time last year, and many states are seeing significant increases.

"The widespread rise in foreclosure activity in the third quarter compared to a year ago is the result of two starkly different trends taking place," Daren Blomquist, vice president at RealtyTrac, said in the report. "In states such as New Jersey, Massachusetts, and New York, a flood of deferred distress from the last housing crisis is finally spilling over the legislative and legal dams that have held back some foreclosure activity for years."

Thirty-three states had year-over-year increases in foreclosure activity, and the country registered a 3% increase as a whole.

Bank repossessions, one of the better-known types of foreclosure activity, increased 66% in the third quarter from the same time period in 2014, with a total of 123,040 properties seized.

RealtyTrac also included a breakdown of each state's foreclosure information. We've compiled the 12 states with higher foreclosure rates than the national average, which was one house out of every 407. Each state also includes the change in foreclosure activity from the third quarter last year and the total number of properties involved in foreclosure.

12 predictions from 1900 that are frighteningly accurate

$

watkins predictions

Sometimes — most times — our predictions of the future are hilariously wrong. (Looking at you, whale bus.)

But sometimes people get it frighteningly right, like J. Elfreth Watkins, a civil engineer from the 19th century.

Watkins made over a dozen lofty predictions about the future and was off-base on only a small number of them.

Here are Watkins' predictions, published in a 1900 issue of "Ladies' Home Journal" under the title "What May Happen in the Next Hundred Years."

Americans will be taller by one to two inches.

On average, 21-year-old males are an inch and a half taller today than they were in 1912. Females are approximately half an inch taller.

The steady increase in height is due largely to an improved diet. We are consuming more protein, vitamins, and minerals than we were in centuries past.

We're also much more medically advanced, so we can stop diseases from taking over our bodies and preventing those important nutrients from getting absorbed.

Express trains [will travel at] one hundred and fifty miles per hour.

Even though Watkins' prediction that typical rail services will travel 120 miles per hour was twice the actual speed, his prediction for express trains was dead-on, if conservative.

The Acela express train hits top speeds of 150 miles per hour.

The Shinkansen in Japan, known more commonly as "bullet trains," glide along at 198 mph.

And if Elon Musk's Hyperloop comes to life, we could see trains approaching the speed of sound, or 760 mph.

Ready-cooked meals will be bought from establishments similar to our bakeries of today.

The frozen-food industry is worth $33 billion.

British Airways Airbus A380-800

As airlines and airplanes have evolved, so have their "liveries"— the exterior designs, including paint colors and logos, on the aircraft.

As planes crisscross the globe, their exterior graphics not only represent the companies that operate them, but in many instances also serve as visual ambassadors for their respective homelands.

A great airline livery gives onlookers a taste of a carrier's values or its culture's ethos in an attractive and effective color scheme.

You mess with this at your own peril. Airlines like Southwest, Spirit, and American have recently updated their liveries, with mixed results.

Others have hit home runs. Here's a selection of 15 airline exterior designs that look simply amazing.

An Arkansas mom recently made her daughter's dreams come true by throwing her a CVS-themed birthday party.

Sarah Fortune's daughter Iris has been obsessed with CVS since construction on the pharmacy started in their town a few years ago. Sarah and Irish would drive past the construction site twice a day, on the way to school and back.

"Being that she was only three when it opened, she watched the progress of the structure being built for nearly half of her life, so naturally it was a big deal when the store finally opened," Sarah writes on her blog.

Now that the store's been open for a while, Iris's love of CVS is unwavering. Sarah writes that when she asked Iris if she'd rather go to CVS or Disney World, Iris couldn't choose.

"So when your kid puts CVS on the same level as Disney World, you embrace it," Sarah writes. "When they ask for a CVS birthday party, you throw it. One day it won’t be so simple to make her happy, so for now I take her to CVS when we have a few extra minutes to spare and try my best to make her birthday party special, as tricky as it may be (after all, there are no Pinterest boards for this, folks)."

Keep reading to see photos from Iris's CVS-themed fourth birthday party.

First, in case you doubted her devotion, here's a video from about a year ago of Iris wailing about her love for CVS.

US Airways Final Flight

Over the weekend, US Airways ceased independent operations after more than 75 years in business.  Flight 1939 — the final flight operated using the US Airways name — started at the airline's Philadelphia hub before flying to Charlotte, Phoenix, San Francisco and Philadelphia.

After its final flight, the Tempe, Arizona-based airline combined its flight and ticketing operations with its merger partner, American Airlines.

This is the culmination of an $11 billion merger that was first announced in 2013. Prior to the merger, US Airways boasted a fleet of more than 300 jets. The post-merger American Airlines now has the largest fleet in the world, with more than 900 mainline aircraft.

"US Airways Flight 1939 was the final US Airways flight to take off – ever," An American Airlines spokesperson told Business Insider in an emailed statement. "It was named in honor of the year that US Airways started flying 76 years ago as a mail carrier."

Chris Sloan and Ben Wang of Airways News criss crossed the country on board US Airways' final flight. Here's what it was like on board the historic flight.
