Meet Google's Baddest Engineer, Jeff Dean (GOOG)

jeff dean google badass engineer

Jeff Dean is one of Google's most popular engineers, ever.

The software genius is widely credited by Googlers for the blazing speed of the company's famed search engine.

Dean has been with Google since 1999 and his engineering prowess and popularity have inspired "Jeff Dean Facts".

You know those Chuck Norris jokes called "Chuck Norris Facts"?

Like: "Chuck Norris doesn't wash dishes, they wet themselves out of fear" or "Chuck Norris is not allowed on commercial flights because his fists are considered deadly weapons"?

Well, Dean has his own version, compiled by Google's very own engineers who admire him. What started out as an April Fool's joke by engineer Kenton Varda has exploded into a cult classic.

They're pretty funny – if you understand software engineers and their sense of humor.

Because we don't always understand the language, so we asked Business Insider CTO, Pax Dickinson, to help translate the jokes for the rest of us.

Compilers don’t warn Jeff Dean. Jeff Dean warns compilers.

Joke by: Christopher Lin

Pax: "Compilers warn you when your code is doing something that isn't an error but might not be correct. Jeff knows better than the compiler."

Jeff Dean builds his code before committing it, but only to check for compiler and linker bugs.

Ruben Belloso, art, artist

A picture is worth 1,000 words, but the pieces by young artist Rubén Belloso Adorna may be worth even more than that.

Born in Seville, Spain, Belloso is trained in the fine arts from the University of Seville. His primary medium is pastels, and now his name is becoming legendary in the art world for his realistic-looking portraits of both real and fictional characters in a style of art known as hyperrealism.

Belloso, who also teaches classes on how to work with pastels, shared some of his beautiful masterpieces with us. They're so lifelike, you might forget they're only drawings.

Elia Vázquez Díaz — Belloso created this portrait of Elia, his maternal grandmother.

"Ernst VII"— Belloso's portrait of Ernst VII. To give you an idea of the scale of his work, this piece is 185 cm by 122 cm, over six feet tall.

"Estudio Portugal 4" ("Portugal Study 4") — This piece was done from an original photo by Belloso's favorite photographer, Javier Pardo.

'Suicidal' Antarctic Journey Reaches First Milestone

The Coldest Journey - DNU

Once Sir Ranulph Fiennes and his five-man team set off to cross the Antarctic continent during the winter months, the only thing standing between them and the finish line will be 2,400 miles of ice.

The trek has never been attempted before, and for good reason.

Temperatures can plunge to minus 130 degrees Fahrenheit, cold enough to instantly freeze exposed skin. Hidden chasms can devour tractors heavier than three elephants combined. Winds can hit 155 mph.

Click here to see pictures of their journey so far >

Total isolation may be an even bigger terror than extreme weather.

Once their voyage over the ice begins, the team is completely on their own. A rescue is impossible, at least until summer.

Planning for the expedition, dubbed The Coldest Journey, began five years ago. After a team of Norwegian explorers crossed the Arctic during winter in 2010, Fiennes has considered traversing the Antarctic during its coldest season to be the last great polar challenge. His original idea was to cross the Antarctic on skis supported by food and other supplies that had been dropped off by parachute the previous summer.

The British Government flat-out rejected this arrangement. It was deemed too dangerous — even suicidal.

In order to comply with the safety standards, the veteran explorer, now 68, had to secure two heavy snow vehicles, living quarters, and a polar ship to get all the equipment to Antarctica (a feat within itself).

Permits from the British government to green-light the expedition were granted just 12 days before the SA Agulhas, a South African ice vessel, left London on the first leg of the journey to Antarctica.

The Coldest Journey team has been chronicling their progress through a series of blog posts and pictures posted to the expedition's website

The following slides present their incredible journey, thus far.

The Coldest Journey team leaves London on Dec. 6, 2012, departing down the Thames on a 6,800-ton polar ship dubbed SA Agulhas.

The first winter Antarctic crossing begins 3.21.2012.

Prince Charles, standing next to expedition leader Sir Ranulph Fiennes, or "Ran," gives the team a hearty sendoff.

The ship has a crew of about 30, as well as 50 South African navy cadets, seven scientists, and seventeen expedition members.

Under The GOP's Electoral College Rigging Plan, Elections Would Have Gone A Lot Differently

$
0
0

Ronald ReaganRepublican lawmakers in several key swing states are considering plans to allocate their electoral college votes by Congressional district, in a move that would give Republican presidential candidates a new advantage in future elections.

The policy, if applied nationally, would seriously impact the way presidential elections turn out by giving out electoral votes by congressional districts already drawn to be favorable for Republicans.

Here, we look at the past eleven presidential elections to see how they would turn out if every state allocated their presidential electoral votes along congressional district lines. The electoral college numbers are estimates, arrived at by finding the number of congressional districts each candidate's party won, and adding two votes for each outright majority in a state.

1972: McGovern would have come close to defeating Nixon

What would have happened: Despite the fact that Democratic Senator George McGovern only won an outright majority in one state and the District of Columbia — and that he lost the election to President Richard Nixon by 18 million votes — the Democratic candidate would have come within 23 electoral votes of the Oval Office, buoyed by a victory in 242 congressional districts.

What really happened: Nixon crushed McGovern, 520 - 17.

1976: Carter would have shellacked Ford

What would have happened: Despite only having a popular vote margin of victory of 2.1 percent, Georgia's Democratic Governor Jimmy Carter would have finished with 341 electoral votes, thumping President Gerald Ford's 197 votes.

What really happened: Carter beat Ford, 297 to 240 electoral votes.

1980: Reagan would have beaten Carter by a hair

What would have happened: Carter would have come within 12 electoral votes of victory, despite losing to Ronald Reagan by 8.4 million votes and losing 44 states.

The final electoral vote count: Reagan 280 - Carter 258.

What really happened: The election was a landslide. Reagan won 489 electoral votes to Carter's 49, and finished with a double digit margin of victory in the popular vote spread.

DAMODARAN: Five Cautionary Notes For Every Value Investor

$
0
0

aswath damodaran

Value investors buy stocks that they consider to be trading at less than intrinsic value.  Warren Buffett is a well-known value investor.

However, it can be very unpleasant being a value investor.

Value stocks don't always recover their perceived value in a timely manner.  In fact, more often than not, prices will sink further. And the investor inevitably questions whether he made a mistake.  After all, it's always possible that the stock will never recover its value.

In a recent blog post, legendary NYU finance professor Aswath Damodaran said that he believes there is now a 90 percent chance Apple is undervalued.  He described himself as a "value optimist" on the stock.

But he doesn't expect the stock to just go straight up from here.

For those courageous value investors who are have have decided to "take the leap" on Apple, Damodaran offers five cautionary notes.  These notes apply for all value investors.

"Don't bet the house"

"No matter how confident you are in your value assessment, don't go overboard and invest a disproportionate amount of your portfolio in Apple.  This is not just about you being right on the value but also about the market coming around to your point of view, and that is not in your control or mine; betting more than 10% of your portfolio on this stock strikes me as foolhardy."

Source: Musing on Markets

"Don't double down (Dollar averaging)"

"I have never been a fan of dollar averaging, which not only muddies the water about when/how much you invested in a stock but results in increasing your bets as the market goes against you. Take a stand against the market but do not make this an ego trip, where admitting that you are wrong becomes impossible to do. Thus, while I feel more confident now that the stock is under valued than I was a week ago when I bought the stock for $500, I don't plan to buy more shares."

Source: Musing on Markets

"Think of buying the business, not the stock"

"The old adage that you are buying a piece of a company, not a share of stock, is particularly relevant when you make a bet like this one. My intrinsic valuation is determined by Apple's capacity to generate profits and cash flows and is not dependent upon whether portfolio managers are investing with me or analysts are lowering their price estimates. If I buy Apple at $440 today and I can hold the stock, I will get a share of a cash that is paid out and a share of ownership in the cash that is withheld. I have to keep reminding myself of that truth, even if the market moves against me."

Waverly Advisors slide dek cover

Changing climate conditions, higher demand in Asia, and inefficient agricultural practices are likely to cause demand-supply imbalances for agricultural commodities.

For China which has extremely inefficient farming practices this means it could take a hit as a net importer of grains.

In a presentation titled Macro Perspective: Hunger & Pride, Waverly Advisors gives an overview of Chinese grain demand and points out that in the long-run Beijing needs to increase crop yields per-acre ratio to build food security.

The Biggest Websites In The United States

Girl, Computer, Thinking, Job Search, Browsing Internet, Student, Working

You know Google is huge.

Facebook, too.

You probably remember Yahoo.

Amazon is massive, of course.

And oh yeah, eBay!

But we bet you can't name the other 15 biggest Internet Web sites … in order.

We can, thanks to ComScore, which provided us data on December 2012's most popular Web domains in the US.

Answers.com - 49 Million Visitors

What it is: Question and answer site.

How it got so big: For starters, Answers.com is a great domain. It also has an abundance of community-generated answers that get fed traffic from Google search results pages.

Walmart.com - 49 Million Visitors

What it is: Online shopping site.

How it got so big: Walmart's lowest prices anytime, anywhere strategy has taken the nation by storm. It has huge name recognition. So it's no surprise that people are flocking to its website to purchase affordable goods when they can't make it to the retail store.

Go.com - 49 Million Visitors

What it is: Disney-owned web portal featuring content from ABC News, ESPN, and FamilyFun.com.

How it got so big: No one really goes to Go.com. They go to Disney-owned sites, which all have Go.com built into their URLs. It's the legacy of a failed experiment from back in the 1990s, when Disney tried to launch a portal to rival Yahoo, called Go.

The Nastiest Breakups Wall Street Has Ever Seen

$

jon corzine henry paulson

Just because people work together, doesn't mean they like each other.

On Wall Street, just because people work together, doesn't mean they don't want to stab each other in the back.

When that happens between two people at the top of the heap, you have an epic breakup on your hands.

Steve Kaplan, a professor at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, comments on the cutthroat environment that exists in the upper echelon in finance:

“What happens is people spend time politicking, which has some costs. It’s the CEO’s or the board’s job either to try to get them to stop feuding, or you remove one.”

We've collected the nastiest, most embarrassing breakups from the world of finance to show just how ugly things can get.

Whether it's due to gross misconduct, oversized egos, strategic differences, or poor performance, these executive exits have become the stuff of legends.

Sallie Krawcheck left Citigroup amidst tensions with then-CEO Vikram Pandit.

Once CFO at Citi, Krawcheck received a public demotion and became chairwoman of wealth management at the firm in 2007. It became clear she and Pandit did not share the same corporate vision, and a decision to accelerate stripping Krawcheck of further responsibilities prompted her to leave Citi in 2008. According to the New York Times, she lost seven pounds shortly thereafter and told friends it felt like she got a divorce.

But this one incident didn’t keep Krawcheck down. Less than a year later, she was hired by Bank of America to integrate Merrill Lynch into the firm. When Krawcheck left, she received a golden parachute of $6 million in 2011.

Peter Lewis was ousted from HSBC over allegations of lewd behavior in the changing room of the company gym.

Lewis, who had been in a monogamous homosexual relationship for a decade prior to the incident, lasted just eight weeks as HSBC's Global Head of Equity Trading. He denied any inappropriate acts and sued the firm for wrongful termination, claiming he was fired due to his sexual orientation.

Lewis sued HSBC for £5 million, but didn't get a penny. He went on to become the CEO for MF Global Hong Kong, and currently runs his own consulting firm in Hong Kong.

Jeff Gundlach had a lot of dirty laundry aired after he was fired and sued by TCW.

Gundlach, who served as CIO, was allegedly caught plotting to start his own firm , DoubleLine Capital, after a falling out with CEO Marc Stern and subsequently fired in 2009. The firm accused him of stealing proprietary information, and revealed that it found pornography and drug paraphernalia in his office. In return, Gundlach countersued for unpaid wages.

After a jury awarded Gundlach and some colleagues $66.7 million in unpaid wages but also found him guilty of breaching his fiduciary duty, the two sides reached a confidential settlement in early 2012.

It's clear Gundlach hasn't lost his magic touch. His recent trade recommendation (short yen, long Nikkei) has performed fabulously.

THE BONEYARD: Where Air Force Birds Go To Die

Air Force Graveyard Boneyard

Air Force boneyards appeal to the child in us. The rows of rusted out planes look like old, forgotten toys, which a child could reach out and grab and lift into the air again.

The feeling is even stronger for airmen.

In an excellent article in Airman Magazine, Air Force Tech. Sgt. Matthew Bates describes retired Col. Bill Hosmer admiring a derelict F-86 Sabre:

To retired Col. Bill Hosmer, it’s still beautiful. He walks around the old fighter and stares in admiration. He slides a hand over the warped metal fuselage and a flood of memories rush over him.

“I haven’t been this close to one of these in years,” he says. “Of course, that one was in a lot better shape.”

So was Hosmer. Time has weathered and aged them both, the plane’s faded paint and creased body match Hosmer’s own worn and wrinkled skin. Even the plane’s discarded wings stand as a metaphor for Hosmer’s own life now – a fighter pilot who can’t fly, standing next to a fighter jet with no wings.

Aircraft from all military services cover the desert landscape of the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group "Boneyard" at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz.

An old, weathered flight manual sits inside the remains of a CH-3E Jolly Green Giant. After years of standing in the desert sun of the boneyard, aircraft and equipment slowly age and erode.

The Boeing YAL-1 Airborne Laser Testbed, (formerly Airborne Laser) weapons system now sits decommissioned in the boneyard. The YAL-1 was primarily designed as a missile defense system to destroy tactical ballistic missiles with an airborne laser system.

You may have heard about the porn problems Twitter's been having with its new Vine video app.

Yes, well, it may have solved those—but what about the far more serious problem of food porn?

Twitter ran afoul of Apple's prohibition on so-called "Chatroulette"-style apps that make it too easy to encounter porn.

We want to know what Apple and Twitter are going to do about this outrageous "Chefroulette" problem that makes people hungry when they watch Vine videos by Twitter chef Lance Holton.

Holton, through his @birdfeeder account, is threatening every Twitter user's emotional well-being and level of satiety by using Vine to document the inappropriately tasty food he's preparing for Twitter employees.

Paula Deen Buffalo Wings

Oh, Paula Deen — it's unsurprising that the maker of the chocolate pizza, butter cake ice cream, and Krispy Kreme pudding would also have a recipe for some killer buffalo wings.

But what is surprising about the recipe is that it only takes 20 minutes to make (including 10 minutes of prep time), and has a total of only five ingredients.

We found an old Food Network video of the recipe and the nearly-unrecognizable Southern cook and broke it down here. No matter your opinion on last year's controversy over Deen keeping her type 2 diabetes diagnosis under wraps, these wings are worth trying for yourself perhaps on Super Bowl Sunday.

Pat them dry with a towel — you don't want any water residue before you fry them.

1. Frame illustrations from a book or magazine.

Art magazines and vintage books are great sources of frameworthy illustrations — just cut pages out neatly and pop them into any blank frame you have lying around.

Once I framed a whole series of '70s surfing photos from a feature in The Surfer's Journal (a particularly artsy surfing mag) for a cool retro take on the beach theme.

Look through your stacks with a fresh eye; you never know what you may find.

2. Repurpose fabric remnants as art.

If you do any sewing or crafting, I am willing to bet you have some pretty fabric pieces in your stash, just waiting for the right home.

Stretch a larger piece over a blank canvas, cut a piece to fit in an embroidery hoop or place a small swatch in a frame.

3. Use vases to display jewelry.

Instead of hiding extra vases in a cupboard (which is probably overcrowded as it is), put them to work displaying your favorite necklaces and bracelets atop your dresser. So easy!

4. Use your throws in a fresh way.

Instead of always folding them at the foot of the bed or over the arm of a chair, try using your throws to change the look of your furniture with a bit of strategic folding and tucking.

Try wrapping the loose cushion of your sofa with a throw, or lay a throw folded in thirds across the back and seat of an armchair, as shown here.
