The Queen has a £13 billion property empire — here are the 11 most spectacular assets she owns

The Queen

LONDON — Sometimes it pays to be a monarch.

The English Monarchy holds a huge amount of historic property in the UK, which is managed by the Crown Estate.

The Crown Estate announced in June that it returned a record £328.8 million to the Treasury in 2016 as the value of the overall estate rose to an astonishing £13.1 billion.

Under current arrangements, the Queen receives 25% of the Crown Estate's revenues in the form of a Sovereign Grant, which is used to fund her official work and the upkeep of her residences.

Alongside property historically owned by the monarchy, the Queen also personally owns property assets — rather those attached to the office of the monarch — and her holdings include some of the grandest properties in Britain.

Business Insider took a look at the most spectacular royal assets. The list includes some of the country's best-known buildings: Iconic race courses, grand hotels, historic castles, and an offshore energy portfolio worth over £1 billion.

The Savoy, London: The Queen privately owns an 18,433-hectare estate called the Duchy of Lancaster. It is administered separately from the Crown Estate. Part of that is the Savoy Estate, a stretch of prime real estate in central London which houses the iconic Savoy Hotel, long seen as the height of sophistication.

Historic Castles: The Duchy of Lancaster also holds around a dozen historic properties, including Lancaster Castle in Lancashire (pictured), and Pickering Castle in Yorkshire. The Duchy delivers an annual income of around £18 million, which is paid directly to the ruling monarch.

Sandringham House, Norfolk: The 8,000-hectare estate in Norfolk, England, is privately owned by the Queen. It was originally purchased by Queen Victoria in 1862. Prince Philip and the Queen choose to spend much of their time at the private country residence.

Republicans and Democrats actually do agree on facts, according to a survey commissioned by tech billionaire Steve Ballmer

American flag face paint USA US America fan

Tech billionaire Steve Ballmer thinks it's high time that the US works together to solve our issues.

The former Microsoft CEO, and current LA Clippers owner, is single-handedly trying to get the nation back to a common sense discussion on government-based on facts.

He shelled $10 million of his own money to build a website called USAFacts, which takes the government's own data on everything from crime to taxes and makes it available, and digestible, to ordinary citizens.

But, as Americans know these days, there seems to be a war on facts, where things that are probably untrue are presented to people as if they were facts.

So, Ballmer and his USAFacts team commissioned an online poll, conducted by Harris Insight and Analytics, to survey thousands of Americans from all states, rural and urban, and ask them their thoughts about facts. Over 2,500 Americans participated in the poll, evenly split between Democrats, Republicans, independents, and across age groups.

Steve BallmerThe shocking news: there is nearly uniform consensus across every affiliation and demographic on the nature of government facts. People get their facts from similar places, agree on the sources to question, and desire to learn more facts about the same issues.

When Ballmer saw the results, he was "heartened," he tells Business Insider.

"In the daily rancorous world of politics, you would think, some days, that people can’t agree on anything. But people in various ages and political situations all seem to be interested in understanding the facts. And all have some view that if you can get informed, you can get closer together."

The poll uncovered a number of surprising tidbits that show just how closely aligned Americans really are when it comes to facts about government.

The poll surveyed 2,521 people evenly spit across age groups, political affiliations (Democrats/Republicans/independents), rural/urban areas. So it pretty fairly represents people from all walks of American life.

The poll found that Republicans, Democrats and independents prefer facts and figures about their government, rather than stories and anecdotes, with at least 88% in every affiliation agreeing on this.

78% of people said they preferred written analysis about government finances, rather than raw data.

Here's the breakdown by political affiliation:

Democrat: 83%

Republican: 77%

No party affiliation: 72%

Netflix's ‘Narcos’ will come back September 1 — here are some new photos

Screen Shot 2017 07 14 at 9.34.35 AM

As tends to be the case with successful shows, “Narcos” is set to return to Netflix for its third season this fall. That’s more notable now than it might have been a few months ago, however, as the streaming giant is now in the habit of canceling certain series (sorry, “Sense8”). Five first-look photos and a video announcing the return date of September 1 have been shared exclusively with IndieWire; avail yourself of all below.

With Pablo Escobar no longer a factor, season three will focus on the rise of the Cali Cartel. DEA agent Javier Peña (Pedro Pascal) can be seen pointing ominously at them on one of those cork boards used to map the connections between shady criminal enterprises (see also “The Sopranos” and every iteration of “Law and Order), with such names as Gilberto Rodriguez, Miguel Rodriguez and  Hélmer “Pacho” Herrera at the top.

Boyd Holbrook and Joanna Christie also star in the series, which premiered in August of 2015. “Narcos” season three will be available to stream on Netflix starting September 1.

The best printers you can buy for less than $100

$

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

printer 100 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • Printers don’t have to be expensive to be high-quality. Our top pick, the Canon Pixma MX922 boasts a built-in scanner, a fax machine, and super high-resolution printing for less than $100.

A great printer can make or break your home office, especially depending on how much work you do at home and how often you need to print. Unfortunately, printers can get a little pricey, but they don’t necessarily have to be. In fact, there are a ton of great printers out there for a relatively low price, and those printers still have a lot to offer.

When buying a printer, there are quite a few things to keep in mind. Here are a few key points to consider in your search for the perfect printer.

  • Laser or inkjet: There are two main types of printers: laser printers and inkjet printers. Laser printers are generally more expensive than inkjet printers, however, they’re also cheaper to maintain as they don’t require ink and pages tend to print quite a lot faster. Laser printers also need toner, which tends to last longer than the ink used in inkjet printers. Of course, if you’re looking for a printer to print photos, you will probably want an inkjet printer.
  • Do you want a scanner? Many printers these days also come with built-in scanners, which can be a very helpful addition to your home office. If you’re someone who handles things like contracts you have to sign or documents you need to fill out by hand, a scanner may be very helpful.
  • Double-sided printing: Some printers can print on both sides of the pages, so if you want double-sided pages you won’t have to worry about printing one side then flipping the paper.

Some companies also offer a few extra features. For example, HP offers an ink subscription so it’ll send you ink automatically when you need it.

With all that in mind, take a look at our top five budget printer picks. We've got wireless printers, inkjet ones, laser printers, and even a pick that's less than $50. If you want a high-end printer, check out our best printers guide.

If you're looking for more great tech, you should check out our guides to the best external hard drives, the best e-readers, the best computer mice, the best wireless Bluetooth headphones, the best smartwatches, the best Bluetooth keyboards, the best home projectors, the best home security cameras, the best Android tablet, the best battery packs, the best Micro USB cables, the best lightning cables, the best USB-C cables, and more on Insider Picks.

Although the Canon Pixma MX922 is our top pick, for various reasons laid out in the slides below, you should also consider the HP OfficeJet 4560, the Canon Pixma MG6820, the Brother HL-L2340DW, and the Epson XP-340.

SEE ALSO: The best printers you can buy for your home

The best printer under $100

Why you'll love it: The Canon Pixma MX922 isn’t just a great, high-resolution printer, it’s also a scanner and a fax machine that can handle all your needs.

Canon has been a driving force in the printer world for quite some time now, and for good reason. The company offers generally excellent printers, often at very reasonable prices. Although Canon makes a lot of budget printers, the Canon Pixma MX922 is our top pick for the best printer under $100.

There are a number of reasons we love this printer so much. For starters, it’s an all-in-one, which means that not only does it work as a printer, it also doubles as a scanner, a copier, and a fax machine, so you won’t need to worry about buying all those devices separately.

Not only that, but while Canon doesn’t necessarily call this inkjet printer a “photo printer” it can print at a pretty high resolution. It’ll go all the way up to 9,600 x 2,400 dots per inch, which is higher than most budget all-in-one printers. On top of that, it’ll print labels for things like CDs and DVDs.

Another big selling point for this printer is that it comes with a built-in auto-duplexer, which means it’ll flip paper and print both sides automatically. That can be an important point to consider for many people.

We’re not the only ones that like this printer. PCMag gave it a hefty 4/5 stars, noting that while it’s an excellent printer, it can be a little slow at printing.

Pros: High-resolution printing, has a scanner and fax machine, relatively inexpensive

Cons: Slow, still a little pricey

Buy the Canon Pixma MX922 on Amazon for $78.99 (originally $199.99)

The best connected printer for under $100

Why you'll love it: The HP OfficeJet 4560 offers excellent connectivity and related connected features such as an ink subscription service, plus it has a built-in scanner and fax machine.

HP is known for its great printers, and it offers a number of nice perks that some other printer manufacturers don’t have. For example, HP’s printers often make full use of internet connectivity, which can make for a very nice experience. Perhaps the best example of this in the sub-$100 range is the HP OfficeJet 4650.

Not only does the printer allow for wireless printing, but HP also gives the printer a dedicated email address that you can send documents to so that the printer will automatically print the documents. HP also has an ink subscription service for as little as $2.99 per month that will automatically send you ink when it detects that your ink is running low.

Apart from the excellent connected services, the HP OfficeJet 4650 also has a built-in scanner and fax machine. It does dual-sided printing, too, so it’s a very flexible and versatile device. There are a few downsides to consider. For example, the printer doesn’t have an Ethernet connection and may print a little slowly, but for less than $100, it's a steal.

Pros: Great connectivity and connected features, built-in scanner and printer

Cons: No Ethernet, slightly slow printing

Buy the HP OfficeJet 4560 on Amazon for $65.99 (originally $99.99)

The best photo printer for under $100

Why you'll love it: The Canon Pixma MG6820 offers excellent photo image quality and mobile printing capabilities for less than $100.

Canon has long been known as one of the better companies to buy photo printers from, and while you could spend tens of thousands of dollars on a dedicated photo printer, you can also get a relatively good one for under $100. Case in point: the Canon Pixma MG6820.

This printer supports mobile printing and scanning, as well as printing and scanning through Wi-Fi, which is very handy. The real draw, however, is the quality of the prints. The printer is built to be a budget photo printer, and as such, the photo output is above par compared to other printers on this list.

Like any budget product, there are a few downsides to consider. Printing speed is somewhat slow, and the printer doesn’t have a fax machine or Ethernet port. Still, it seems as though the pros here outweigh the cons. If you’re looking for a great photo printer or a document printer that you want to use for printing photos every now and then, this may be the right choice for you.

Pros: Great photo quality, built-in scanner, wireless and mobile printing

Cons: Slow, no Ethernet port

Buy the Canon Pixma MG6820 on Amazon for $74.99 (originally $149.99)

The best charcoal for grilling all summer long

$

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

charcoal 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • Although you may think that one bag of charcoal is almost identical to another, there are actually many different types and styles of charcoal to choose from. The best charcoal for the average backyard barbecue fan is the seven-pound bag of Royal Oak Ridge Briquettes.

Perhaps nothing signals that summer has started quite like getting the grill going. For many of us, cooking outside for friends and family is a time-honored way to celebrate the season. Besides getting everybody together outside, a good grill gives your food a unique smoky flavor.

There are quite a few different types of grills on the market these days, but the two basic types remain gas grills and charcoal grills. The final word over which one is better has been hotly debated by BBQ junkies for years, but in this article, we’re focusing on finding the best charcoal for your charcoal grill. If you don't have a charcoal grill yet, buy one of our top picks for the best charcoal grills here.

But first, what is charcoal? Charcoal is a kind of half-burnt wood. It’s made by burning the wood very slowly without much oxygen so that it turns into carbon. People like to cook with charcoal because it burns hotter than wood and produces less smoke.

Types of charcoal for grilling

best_charcoal_grill_ _Char griller_Akorn_Kamado_Kooker_ _from_Amazon

  • Charcoal Briquettes: This is the type of charcoal that Americans are most familiar with. In fact, seared into my mind is the image of a red, white, and blue bag of charcoal that sat by the back door and always accompanied us on our camping trips when I was a child. It was the Kingsford brand, which is still the best-selling charcoal in this country. Briquettes are so popular because they’re affordable, easy to use and readily available. Made of wood, briquettes also contain “binding” ingredients like sawdust, starch, and sodium nitrate, which make it burn better. Compressed into a uniform shape and size, briquettes produce a consistent burn and are ideal for foods that require less cooking time like fish or steak.
  • Instant Charcoal Briquettes: In 2017, you are going to find very few people who advocate for using these briquettes, because they have been heavily pre-soaked in lighter fluid. Yes, they are easy to light, but they leave your food with a considerable, chemical aftertaste.
  • Hardwood Lump Charcoal: Made from real chunks of charred wood, lump charcoal contains none of the additives found in briquettes. In general, lump costs at least twice as much as briquettes, but it lights easier and burns cleaner, producing the least amount of smoke and ash. As an added bonus, since the chunks are actual wood, they can also impart a nice, smoky flavor to your food. Lump charcoal also burns hotter than briquettes, which is ideal when you want to sear a steak or other meat. One of the downsides is that the heat is not as consistent as briquettes, and it may take you a little while to learn to manage your fire. Serious foodies favor lump charcoal for all these reasons and because it is all natural, it’s been growing in market share over the last decade.
  • Flavored Briquettes: Both briquettes and lump charcoal come in flavored versions. The most popular are mesquite, hickory, and Applewood. Many BBQ aficionados suggest that if you are craving these flavors, your best bet is to add flavored wood chips in with your non-flavored briquettes
  • Binchotan Also known as white charcoal, this pure charcoal has been made from hard Ubame Oak trees found in Japan for hundreds of years. It not only burns at extremely high temperatures, and produces virtually no smoke or ash, but will last for three to five hours. Enjoying a renaissance in recent years, both in Japan and worldwide, binchotan charcoal is also known for its purifying and deodorizing characteristics. Proponents claim hanging a couple of pieces in your bathroom can prevent mold and mildew; it’s also thought that it can purify water by absorbing toxins like chlorine and mercury. Binchotan is often more difficult to ignite than both lump charcoal and briquettes. Although the price varies widely, it’s almost always more expensive than the other types of charcoal.
  • Thai Charcoal: Famed chef Andy Ricker, known for his expertise in northern Thai cuisine, has created his own charcoal that succeeded in capturing the high heat of binchotan without the high cost. Created from orchard-grown rambutan fruit wood, it provides a nice, even heat, although it can be difficult to light. A 5-pound box of Pok Pok Thaan Thai Style Charcoal Logs is available on Amazon for $15.

How to make the most of your charcoal when you grill

If you are new to charcoal grilling there are a number of ways to ensure that your carefully planned backyard barbecue doesn’t go up in flames. Here, Food & Wine outlines five rookie mistakes to avoid when you’re cooking with charcoal.

  • Don’t forget to use a chimney starter to light the coals. You may be tempted to use lighter fluid — but don’t. Use a chimney starter to light your coals instead.
  • Don’t pour the coals into your grill before they are ready.
  • Don’t heat both sides of your grill to the same temperature.
  • Don’t forget to preheat the grill before cooking.
  • Don’t forget about the vents.

Now that you know what to look for in charcoal and how to use it with your grill, check out our top picks for the best grilling charcoal you can buy.

You should also take a peek at our related grilling buying guides and articles, including the best charcoal grills, our review of Grillbot the grill cleaner, 12 grilling accessories for less than $25, and more on Insider Picks.

The best charcoal for grilling overall

Why you'll love it: The Royal Oak Ridge Briquettes burn beautifully to grill your dinner to perfection.

Royal Oak Enterprises started as the Bradleyville Charcoal Company in Missouri in 1953 but changed to its current name in 1983. Today, the family-owned company is one of the largest charcoal producers in North America. The popular Royal Oak Ridge Briquettes promise to be hot and ready for grilling in 15 minutes. The special ridge shape allows for better airflow and peak performance. The briquettes cost approximately 75 cents a pound.

Around the web, professional reviewers, including found these to be the best overall briquettes for the average backyard barbecue lover. According to The Sweethome, this charcoal burns hotter and longer than most other charcoal, and it doesn't leave much ash behind. The charcoal may not be completely additive free, but it doesn't leave a strange aftertaste on your food, either.

There are no user reviews on Amazon, but on several other barbecue fan sites, consumers praised the briquettes. “I use this charcoal all of the time! It has a good flavor, and burns hot and clean,” wrote one reviewer on Smoking Meat Forums. “I use RO briquettes all the time. I love them. Can’t beat the price,” wrote another reviewer on BBQ-Brethern.

You really can't go wrong with this charcoal, and it'll make your backyard BBQ a hit.

Pros: Burns fast, burns hot, long lasting, no bad taste imparted to food, affordable

Cons: Contains sawdust

The best all-natural charcoal for grilling

Why you'll love it: The Weber Natural Hardwood Briquettes burn longer and hotter than lots of other charcoal.

Since 1952, Weber has been one of the country’s preeminent producers of both gas and charcoal grills, as well as grilling accessories. So when Weber introduced its very first briquettes earlier this year, the barbecue world buzzed with excitement.

The briquettes are sold in a strong, 20-pound, weather-protected, and re-sealable bag. The hardwood of these all-natural briquettes is ground and pressed to create a super dense structure that is free of binders and chemicals. The most notable thing about these briquettes is their consistently large size. The bigger they are, the fewer you’ll need to use while grilling. This ensures consistent heat, prolongs grilling time, and is cost effective.

Buyers seem to love this charcoal, too. On Lowe's website, one reviewer wrote: “I have found this Hardwood Charcoal to burn longer and hotter than competitive brands. The briquettes are much denser, slightly larger and have a rich dark color. I would recommend this for charcoal grilling, or smoking with some Cherry Wood."

The reviewer at Mad Meat Genius, a popular site that regularly reviews grilling products, wrote: “We are very pleased with the performance and longevity of Weber charcoal briquettes. It passed our un-controlled experiment with flying colors. They performed stellar in both of our cooks. We can vouch and would recommend this product.”

If you don't like additives in your charcoal, Weber's Briquettes are a great choice for your grill.

Pros: Burns hot, burns fast, large size, has the Weber name behind it

Cons: Expensive

dentist practice

Some people don't mind feeling crowded. Others really need their personal space.

The latter group should consider avoiding jobs that require workers to get too close for comfort with other people.

We checked out the Occupational Information Network (O*NET), a US Department of Labor database that compiles detailed information on hundreds of jobs, and looked at salary data on the US Bureau of Labor Statistics' website to find positions that place an emphasis on physical proximity.

O*NET ranks occupations based on "the extent the job requires the worker to perform job tasks in close physical proximity to other people," assigning each a "physical proximity importance level" between 1 and 100, where a higher score indicates more physical proximity is required. It also breaks down each occupation's projected growth from 2014 to 2024.

These jobs all require people to work in close physical proximity with others. If you crave your personal space, you should probably steer clear:

Whether that's because of constant pressure from social media or other outside factors, it's easy to forget how amazing each of us truly are.

Recently, INSIDER asked women to share the compliment that made them feel amazing. Here are a few of the most empowering responses they offered.

"You're more like your mother every time I see you."

4 things you should say when you get a 'no' during a salary negotiation

woman job interview talking coworkers boss thinkingYou crushed the interview process and are on the verge of clinching a brand new job. The only thing left to do is hash out your starting salary with the hiring manager.

So you did your homework, determined your ideal number, and asked for it.

And all you got was a big "no."

Now what?

"The best way to handle a 'no' is to prepare for it in advance — the salary negotiation can take multiple turns," Paul McDonald, senior executive director at global staffing firm Robert Half, tells Business insider. "Your thorough preparation means you're not as likely to get surprised in the meeting."

McDonald recommends responding to a "no" during a salary negotiation with several questions. Even though your original number may be off the table for now, these follow-ups can help you get closer to your ideal compensation:

SEE ALSO: 5 tips on negotiating your first salary

'What salary range is the firm considering for the role?'

First of all, McDonald says it's important to get a sense of the hiring manager's expectations. Just make sure to press for a range, not a single number — that'll give you more wiggle room.

'When would the role be up for review?'

"Figure out how soon you can ask for a salary bump," McDonald says.

When you get your answer, determine whether that date is flexible. For example, if the role is up for review in a year, see if you can move the date up to six months, instead.

'Is the role eligible for a bonus?'

Sometimes, companies can sweeten the deal with the promise of regular bonuses, or at least a one-time signing bonus.

If the response to this is yes, then McDonald says to ask about when the bonuses are paid and what the percentage range has been over the last few years.

17 photos that show why wealthy homebuyers are ditching the Hamptons for this laid-back island destination

Shelter Island

If you're looking for a quiet seaside destination to summer in, Shelter Island might be just the ticket.

This 8,000-acre island sandwiched between the North and South Forks of Long Island has long been known as the Hamptons' quieter sibling. It's stayed this way mainly because it's only accessible by ferry.

Local real estate broker Jonathan Smith of Sotheby's says that Shelter Island's less convenient location (for New Yorkers, at least) has helped to keep property prices down.

"It's in the heart of the Hamptons but separated by ferry, and that impacts the perceived value of land," Smith told Business Insider. "It offers excellent value for Hamptons buyers."

According to real estate site Trulia, median listing prices for homes in Shelter Island's most expensive neighborhoods hover around $1 million. The median listing price for houses listed in the Hamptons' most expensive hamlets — parts of East Hampton and Southampton, for example — are as high as $6.5 million.

We've rounded up the best spots to eat, drink, and stay on the island. And if you like it enough, check out some of the most high-end real estate you can pick up right now on Shelter Island.

Shelter Island is about a three-hour drive from New York City. The last leg of the journey requires taking a ferry, either from the North or South Fork. The ferry service runs every 10 to 20 minutes, 365 days a year. The South Ferry runs for longer hours in the summer.

When it comes to dining out, there are a few local favorites. 18 Bay is one popular choice. The menu changes every week, but the concept remains the same: a four-course Italian meal that begins with four different types of antipasti, followed by a homemade pasta dish, an entree, and a dessert. This costs $75 per person.

23 North Ferry Road

Vine Street Cafe is another popular restaurant. You'll find it in a cozy cottage in the center of the island. Ingredients are locally sourced, and daily specials are offered. An entree costs around $35.

A look at the daily routine of James Madison, who owned 4,000 books, was too embarrassed to be seen without a hat, and drank up to a pint of whiskey a day

James Madison

James Madison accomplished a lot.

During his long political career, he served as a member of the Continental Congress, US representative, and Secretary of State in the administration of his close friend Thomas Jefferson.

He was also elected president in 1808. Madison's legacy as commander in chief was decidedly mixed — the British swooped in and burned the capital during his tenure.

Primarily, he is remembered at the "Father of the Constitution," thanks to his crucial contributions to the supreme law of the US.

Here's a look at the Founding Father's daily routine:

Madison would rise early. When he wasn't traveling or living in DC, his primary residence was Montpelier, a plantation house in Orange, Virginia. Paul Jennings, Madison's enslaved valet, would help him dress every morning.

At the age of 15, Jennings helped save Gilbert Stuart's famous portrait of George Washington before the British burned the White House. Later in life, Jennings was purchased and freed by Daniel Webster. He also published an autobiography detailing his experiences as a slave.

5 things you should never say about women's bodies

$

friends women eating ice cream

Body-positivity is all about self-acceptance that's free of judgment. The movement is gaining some serious momentum, especially on social media.

But unfortunately, many people still say the wrong things to women about how they look both online and in person.

However, experts agree that women’s bodies should not be up for public discussion.

INSIDER spoke with Renee Engeln, a psychology professor at Northwestern University and the author of "Beauty Sick: How the Cultural Obsession with Appearance Hurts Girls and Women," and Michelle Elman, a body confidence coach, about why commenting on women’s bodies can be problematic.

Engeln and Elman believe that certain things should never be said about women's bodies. Here are some examples to stay well away from.

Never comment on a person's weight.

Commenting on a coworker or friend’s recent weight loss might seem harmless, but it can carry implications of body-shaming.

"First of all, even if someone has gained or lost noticeable weight, you have no idea why," Engeln told INSIDER. "You don’t know if they’ve been sick, you don’t know if they have an eating disorder, you don’t know if they have a lot of stress in their life."

She said that complimenting someone on their weight loss implies that you thought they didn’t look good before they lost weight, which is harmful.

In general, Engeln said that talking about a person’s weight is not productive.

"We actually have a lot of other things to talk about. I think it’s just habit that when we talk about women we talk about how they look," she said. "Most women are already very aware of how they look, so we don’t need help thinking about it more."

Don't comment on someone’s unique features.

You never know how someone feels about a part of their body, and calling attention to it could make them uncomfortable.

"I can see why this is tempting. Interesting features draw our attention. When our attention is on something, we often want to comment on it," Engeln said. "However, you have no idea how that person feels about that mark on their body or what kind of story underlies it."

Never ask a woman if she’s pregnant.

"If a woman wants to talk about a pregnancy with you, she will. Otherwise, it’s not really any of your business," Engeln said. "You might have to put a woman in a position where she has to confirm something she’s not ready to confirm or to talk about something she’s not ready to talk about yet."

Furthermore, if you're making that assumption based on appearance alone, it could be extremely offensive.

Elman believes commenting on a women's weight is not body-positive.

"You rarely know the context of a situation when commenting on a person's body," she told INSIDER. "Therefore a lot of comments, particularly body-shaming ones are made from assumptions about a person's well-being and health."
