Southerners swear by this regional chicken chain's breakfast menu — we went to see if it lives up to the hype (BOJA)

Bojangles 22

In the South, the biscuit makes the breakfast.

And the biscuit is the unquestionable star of the breakfast menu at Bojangles', a southern chicken and biscuit chain that has cultivated a fervent cult following.

With over 700 locations in 11 states and Washington, DC, the chain has ensconced itself as a regional power player in the chicken game.

Bojangles' is the fifth largest chicken chain in the country by sales, according to QSR Magazine

To see if Bojangles' chicken and biscuit-centric Southern breakfast lives up to the hype, Business Insider visited a location in Virginia.

SEE ALSO: We tried the regional fried chicken chain many people say is the best in America to see if it lives up to the hype

The North Carolina-based chain has over 300 locations in that state alone, but we visited one in Charlottesville, Virginia.

It was late in the morning, but we had no qualms — Bojangles' serves breakfast all day. The breakfast menu is fairly large, offering a bevy of biscuit sandwiches as well as some classic morning sides.

We ordered a decent representation of the menu: a chicken biscuit; a Cajun fillet biscuit' a sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit; a bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit; a country ham biscuit; a plain biscuit; a "Bo-Berry" biscuit; and "Bo rounds," the chain's take on hash browns.

Here's everyone on Arya Stark's kill list, and why

Game of Thrones season 7

Arya Stark has transformed a lot over the course of six seasons of "Game of Thrones." At the beginning of the HBO series, she's a spunky high-born girl who wants to learn how to fight with a sword instead of how to make a dress. But some time after witnessing her father's execution, Arya begins a list of the people she wants to kill that she repeats to herself every night.

We've known for a while that Arya would become a full-blown assassin one day, and now we're here.

She's already offed some people on her list, and some have been offed for her (something she's not very enthusiastic about). But now she's back in Westeros, reminding enemies of the Stark name who she is, while she slowly kills them. Some one at a time, and some dozens at a time in one cold open. Who will be next?

Here's everyone on Arya's kill list, who's left, and why:

SEE ALSO: All the 'Game of Thrones' deaths, ranked from least tragic to most tragic

Cersei Lannister

Why: She falsely accused Arya's father, Ned Stark, of treason and had him arrested, which led to his execution on King Joffrey's orders.

Status: Alive, and sitting on the Iron Throne. And drinking lots of wine while standing on a giant map of Westeros. She has Zombie Gregor Clegane and her brother Jaime to protect her, but from what we saw in the season seven premiere, Jaime might not be on her side for long. In the season seven premiere, Arya says that she's headed to King's Landing to kill Cersei, and at this point we totally believe she can pull it off.

Ilyn Payne

Why: For executing Ned Stark on Joffrey's orders.

Status: Alive. We haven't seen him in a long time. But he's not as important others on the list who are still walking around Westeros with beating hearts.

Melisandre

Why: For taking Gendry away from the Brotherhood Without Banners.

Status: Alive and really, really old, and exiled from Winterfell by Jon Snow. She's headed south, and the last time we saw Arya, she was in the Riverlands. So it's pretty likely that they'll cross paths. Maybe Arya will forgive her since she brought Jon Snow back to life. But probably not.

All 6 times musicians sneakily appeared on 'Game of Thrones'

Ed Sheeran Game of Thrones

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Game of Thrones."

The popularity of HBO's "Game of Thrones" extends to celebrities and notable figures like President Obama, so it should come as no surprise that some famous people have snuck in for cameos.

Though Ed Sheeran's appearance on the season seven premiere was anything but subtle (though the song he sang did have a hidden meaning), other musical cameos might have gone unnoticed by the average viewer.

Take a look at the six cameos from bands or musicians you might have missed:

Season seven kicked off with an epic episode featuring Ed Sheeran as a Lannister soldier.

Sheeran's character was introduced while he was singing a song to a group of fellow Lannister soldiers. And not just any song, but a ballad straight from George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire."

In the books, a singer named Symon Silver Tongue tried to blackmail Tyrion Lannister by writing a ballad about his secret affair with Shae.

Here are the song lyrics, written about Tyrion and Shae:

He rode through the streets of the city,
Down from his hill on high,
O'er the wynds and the steps and the cobbles,
He rode to a woman's sigh.

For she was his secret treasure,
She was his shame and bliss.
And a chain and a keep are nothing,
Compared to a woman's kiss

For hands of gold are always cold
But a woman's hands are warm

Read more about the hidden meaning behind this song here.

The Hardhome massacre was a perfect cameo opportunity for Mastodon.

American metal band Mastadon suited up for the epic massacre on season five's "Hardhome." The three band mates all played wildlings who were slaughtered by White Walkers and wights, and then were re-animated into wights themselves.

The band had a funny anecdote about being in the break tent with a man decked out in White Walker prosthetics.

"He's saying, 'Can ya please, can someone please get me a straw for my hot cocoa? I'd like to drink it please!'" band member Brann Dailor told the Wall Street Journal. "And he's just so brutal, and he looks so scary and epic, and he's just a dude who wants some hot cocoa."

A member of Coldplay was present for the Red Wedding.

Coldplay drummer Will Champion played, well, a drummer on season three's gut-wrenching episode "Rains of Castamere." His role was that of a musician-turned-traitor — the band at the Red Wedding swapped instruments for crossbows and helped murder the Starks.

That wasn't the last time Coldplay was involved with "Game of Thrones." In celebration of Red Nose Day, Coldplay teamed up with the cast to create a mock musical of the series.

The best diaper bags you can buy

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

diaper bag 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • It’s no secret that babies require a lot of stuff for a successful outing, so a good diaper bag is one of the most important purchases a parent-to-be can make. Based on personal testing and research, the Skip Hop Duo Signature is the best diaper bag for most parents, with a reasonable price tag, loads of pockets, several stylish patterns, and easy-to-wipe fabric that can take a beating.

Diapers. Wipes. A light blanket. Extra onesies. Burp cloths. Pacifiers. Teethers. Bottles. Toys. Those are just some of the essentials you may want on hand when you’re out and about with a small baby — and then there’s your stuff, too. A fully stocked diaper bag can be the difference between a quick, successful trip to the store and one of those horror stories that involves a historic diaper blowout, no change of clothes, and lots of tears from both mom and baby in a dirty public restroom. Yep, I’ve been there, and it ain’t pretty.

Diaper bags are a pretty personal purchase, and that’s reflected in the dizzying number of options and price points. Because there are so many out there, there isn’t a lot of expert consensus on the best diaper bags, though we did find a few good sources. We also considered thousands of parent reviews on major retail sites, as well as my own experience with a few diaper bags.

Our favorite diaper bags include an easy-to-use messenger bag, a backpack with pockets galore, a high-end leather looker, a huge bag for moms who won’t leave home without the kitchen sink, and a well-loved “dad bag” for the men in your life.

Also, check out our guides to the best baby monitorsthe best nursing pillows, and the best baby bouncers.

Although the Skip Hop Duo Signature Bag is the best diaper bag for most parents, for various reasons laid out in the slides below, you should also consider the Ju-Ju-Be B.F.F. Backpack, the Storksak Elizabeth Leather Bag, the Skip Hop Grand Central Bag, and the Diaper Dude Messenger Bag

SEE ALSO: The best baby bouncers you can buy

The best diaper bag overall

Why you'll love it: The Skip Hop Duo Signature is sturdy, reasonably priced, comes in lots of colors and patterns, and has tons of space.

I had a basic Skip Hop Duo with my first son, and I loved it so much that I bought it again with my second in a different pattern – the classic, understated French Stripe. But the beauty of the Duo is that it comes in so many different colors and patterns. If stripes aren’t your thing, there’s chevron. Or basic black. Or multicolored triangles. You get the idea.

But the Skip Hop is more than a pretty bag. It’s easy to carry – I loved the long strap, which let me wear it cross-body, though there are also grab handles. It’s easy to attach to the back of a stroller, with “shuttle clips” that loop over the handles and prevent the bag from swinging awkwardly while you walk.

There are oh-so-many pockets – four interior and six exterior, notes Baby List– including 2 elasticized mesh pockets on the side for bottles, a zippered one for easy-to-lose essentials, and a pocket just the right size for a smartphone. As Amazon reviewers note, the material is super-durable, wipeable, and basically bullet-proof.

The one major downfall of the Duo — if there is one — is that it’s on the narrow side, which means I sometimes had to dig for things at the bottom of the main compartment, and I definitely had to streamline what I brought with me more than I wanted when I had two kids. So yes, over packers, you might want to pass. Another minor qualm, as Baby Bargains notes: The bottle pockets aren’t insulated.

Pros: Easy to clean, durable, lots of pockets, lots of colors and patterns, can be easily attached to strollers, low price

Cons: Too small for more than one child, no insulated bottle pockets

Buy the Skip Hop Duo Signature on Amazon for $52.00 (originally $65.00)

The best backpack-style diaper bag

Why you'll love it: The Ju-Ju-Be B.F.F. is easy to wear as a backpack, and it has tons of pockets for all your baby gear.

Whether you’re lugging a baby in a car seat or wrangling a wiggly toddler in a parking lot, you know how important it is to keep your hands free.

I’ve always gravitated toward a messenger-style bag that allows quick access, but a lot of moms rave about how much they love throwing a bag on their backs. If hands-free is up your alley, the Ju-Ju-Be B.F.F. should be a main contender. It has memory-foam padded removable backpack straps that Amazon reviewers rave about, but there’s also a messenger strap, plus a grab handle.

The bag comes in a staggering number of colors and patterns – there are nearly four dozen on Amazon alone – including classic stripes and solids as well as whimsical florals, polka dots, and sail boats.

But enough with how it looks and how to carry it, because what you’re carrying is pretty awesome, too. The Nightlight says that there’s “storage galore … so many pockets, slots and zippered compartments that we ran out of ideas for what to put in them.” There are at least a dozen compartments, and they include two insulated bottle pockets and a “mommy pocket” that includes a key fob and sunglasses pocket.

The polyester bag is Teflon-treated to repel stains, the inner lining is anti-bacterial, and the entire bag can be machine-washed. Other thoughtful touches include metal hardware and luggage feet that keep the bottom of the bag from getting gross when it’s sitting on a restaurant floor or playground bench.

As for downsides, this bag is definitely on the pricier side. Several Amazon reviewers also say they’ve had durability issues, reporting faded fabric, lost zipper pulls, and rips at the seams. The Wise Baby wishes for a bigger changing pad, mommy pocket, and interior pocket.

Pros: Roomy, can be carried as backpack or messenger, lots of colors and patterns, washable, lots of pockets, stain- and germ-resistant

Cons: Expensive, some durability complaints, pockets and changing pad could be bigger

Buy the Ju-Ju-Be B.F.F. on Amazon for $179.95 (price varies based on pattern)

The best designer diaper bag

Why you'll love it: The Storksak Elizabeth is a diaper bag that looks like a designer leather purse, so go ahead and treat yo’ self.

Admit it – you want a diaper bag that doesn’t look like a diaper bag. You want gorgeous hardware and buttery leather. You want a bag that you’d be proud to carry even if you didn’t have a baby. Well, you're in luck, because such a bag does exist.

When my kids got a little bigger, I decided I wanted — no, darn it, I deserved — to carry something higher-quality that could still function as a diaper bag without looking like one. Enter the Storksak Elizabeth, a Mother’s Day splurge that I would carry even if I were still a carefree twenty-something who wanted a beautiful bag that could carry a laptop and other essentials to and from work.

Available in both black and tan, the soft full-grain leather Storksak makes me sigh every time I touch it. It has a removable crossbody messenger strap as well as drop handles and brushed hardware that takes it far beyond that “practical mom purse” feel.

Inside, it’s still every bit a great diaper bag, with a roomy interior, satin-like wipeable lining, and nine interior pockets, many of which are either zippered or elasticized to keep small items in their place. Aside from the standard changing pad, it also comes with an insulated bottle holder and a clip-on zippered case great for makeup or other personal items. And it also lasts – now that my kids are beyond diaper bag age, I still carry this bag, and the leather has been aging beautifully.

The main downside to the Storksak — other than the price — is that, as Amazon reviewers note, it’s not terribly big for a diaper bag. While the leather is fairly supple, it still won’t stretch too much if you try to overstuff the compartments. Also, there are only two exterior pockets, so you may have to dig through it more than you want to.

As for the tan, satiny changing pad? Well, it’s lovely but almost too nice for something that will be pooped on. I cringed a little every time I had to deploy it during a diaper explosion.

Pros: High-quality leather and hardware, durable, versatile, lots of interior pockets, insulated bottle holder, zippered case for personal items

Cons: Expensive, too small for more than one child

Buy the Storksak Elizabeth on Amazon for $272.69 (black) or $345.00 (tan)

hyperloop one

Hyperloop One got a little closer to making its ambitious, high-speed transit system a reality last week.

The startup successfully tested its full-scale Hyperloop system on its DevLoop test track in Nevada on Thursday. The vehicle coasted above the track for 5.3 seconds using magnetic levitation and reached a top speed of 70 mph. Hyperloop One will attempt to reach 250 mph in subsequent testing.

Hyperloop One is considering 11 possible routes for the first US-based transit system, but is also conducting feasibility studies Dubai and Finland.

Last year, Hyperloop One mapped out how the transit system could work in Dubai. Scroll down for a closer look:

The start-up announced in early November that it signed an agreement with Dubai Roads and Transport Authority to evaluate using the Hyperloop between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Hyperloop One is conducting the feasibility study with McKinsey & Co. and the Bjarke Ingels Group.

As part of that announcement, Hyperloop One unveiled its concept for the futuristic transport system that it claims could travel at roughly 700 mph and take passengers from Dubai to Abu Dhabi in 12 minutes, which is normally a two-hour drive.

Here we begin the breakdown of Hyperloop One's concept for the system. First, passengers will use an app to see their transportation options that day.

If a Hyperloop is available, the app will list it alongside other transportation options. If a passenger clicks the Hyperloop option...

The best shower heads you can buy

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

shower head 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • Shower time should be relaxing, and your choice of shower head plays a huge role in making your shower more soothing. Some people love a rain-style shower, while others want a strong, pulsing jet to massage sore muscles. That’s why the Moen S6320 Two-Function Rain Shower Head is the best one you can buy  — It can switch between both types of shower styles, depending on your mood.

The rush of prepping for work or school can almost make you feel relieved to jump in a car and sit in rush hour traffic, listening to two DJs tell bad jokes and play weird sound effects. But before fighting through the commute, it’s time for rushing around, looking for the right outfit, figuring out which overnight emails you were expected to answer before 4 a.m., and wrestling with which flavor packet to plug into the coffee maker. There is one time when you can actually relax – in the shower.

Sure, you might have to shorten your shower after you hit the snooze alarm three times, but the shower stall is still your sanctuary where no one can bother you, even if it’s only for a few minutes.

To ensure that your shower is as relaxing as it can be, you will need to make some choices about the kind of shower head you want to use. You might be surprised at how many shower head options are available.

Why you may need a new shower head

Modern shower heads work differently than older shower heads, meaning there are quite a few advantages to purchasing a new shower head.

  • Modern design: Here, we’re talking about the interior of the shower head, not the way it looks on the outside. An older shower head’s interior often was a cavity that filled with water, forcing the water through the tiny nozzles, meaning the individual nozzles had very little water pressure. A newer shower head has individual channels that feel the nozzles, increasing the ability to deliver water pressure.
  • Removing clogs: An older shower head always seems to have several nozzles that are clogged. Modern shower heads use flexible polymers to create the nozzles, which resist clogging. Additionally, the added water pressure in a new shower head helps to clear the nozzles. However, if you want to preserve your current shower head, Plumbing Supply says you can prolong its life by cleaning it regularly.
  • Water conservation: If you’d like to save water, Heavy discusses how modern low flow shower heads are available that are far more efficient than older shower heads. Some shower heads offer water flow of two gallons per minute or less, which is below government standards, according to The Sweethome.

Features of shower heads

Picking the right shower head is a bit more complex than you might think, thanks to the variety of features now available, as Groom and Style discusses. With all of the different options and features in shower heads, you can pick exactly the type of shower you’d like to have, including rain-style, pulsing jets, or steady spray.

  • Full body: Full body shower installations include nozzles throughout vertical length of the shower stall, rather than just one nozzle at the top of the stall. Although these are really nice designs for a shower, they’re a bit beyond the scope of this list because of the special installation and high expense required.
  • Handheld: Some shower heads fit inside a clamp near the upper pipe, but then disconnect so they can be held in your hand at the end of a flexible hose, allowing you to direct the water spray for more efficient cleaning, as Kitchen Bath Guides explains.
  • High pressure: Some shower heads include high-pressure jets. By turning a ring, these shower heads often provide different spray patterns as well as massage settings.
  • Rainfall: Some showers offer big shower heads that release a lot of water, almost like rainfall. They usually don’t offer the water pressure or pulsing options of other shower head designs.
  • Specialty: Newer shower heads have some interesting specialty features. Some include a built-in wireless speaker inside the shower head, allowing you to sync your smartphone to the speaker to play music or audio. Some include LED lighting that makes it fun to shower.

Finally, Consumer Reports says you must pay attention to the type of installation required for the shower head you pick. Some shower heads will simply screw onto the water pipe that sticks out of the bathroom wall, which most people can handle themselves. Other shower heads require you to tear up drywall to install some components. Understand that you may need to hire a plumber to complete the job, so think about this added cost when purchasing a shower head.

Now on to our picks for the best shower heads you can buy for any type of shower. You can also check out our guides to the best bath mats and the best shower curtains to give your bathroom a full makeover.

Although the Moen Two-Function Rain Shower Head is our top pick, for various reasons laid out in the slides below, you should also consider the WaterPoint 8-inch Rain Shower Head, the Speakman Signature High Pressure Shower Head, the High Sierra Low Flow Shower Head, the ShowerMaxx Detachable Handheld Shower Head, the Delta Single Function Shower Head, the DreamSpa Color Changing LED Shower Head, and the Chromo H2OVibe Wireless Speaker Rain Shower Head.

The best shower head overall

Why you'll love it: Unlike most rain-style shower heads, the Moen S6320 Velocity Two-Function Rain 8-inch Shower Head also offers a surprisingly powerful jet spray.

Most rain-style shower heads don’t offer any other type of water delivery. However, the Moen S6320 Velocity Two-Function Rain 8-inch Shower Head is able to deliver both rain and jet spray styles in one shower head.

The shower head is a great size for a rain-style shower head, and the Moen S6320 also offers immersion technology, which allows for a concentrated jet spray.

A Great Shower says the rain-style shower is amazing and highlights how the shower head uses 100 nozzles to create a rain-like shower. However, the advantage of this shower head is that it can also act as a high-pressure jet spray shower when you want to switch things up. The Shower Hacks review also praises the S6320 shower head for its better than expected water pressure on the jet spray setting.

The That Bathroom review says two of the best features of the Moen Two-Function shower head involve the ability to switch between rain and jet styles, as well as the four different finishes you can choose from, including chrome, antique bronze, brushed nickel, and oil-rubbed bronze.

Buyers on Amazon give the shower head very high ratings as well. It has an average star rating of 4.7, which is very impressive. One Amazon customer reviewer was impressed with the water pressure the S6320 rain shower head provides.

Of course, it is an expensive shower head, costing more than $100 on Amazon. However, when you take into account that it originally cost $252.90 when Moen introduced this shower head, it's a decent bargain. It also has a lifetime warranty.

Pros: Versatile shower head, 100 nozzles for rain style shower, jet style setting provides surprising water pressure level, four finishes available, 8-inch shower head is great for rain-style setting

Cons: Longevity is questionable, price is high

Buy the Moen S6320 Velocity Two-Function Rain 8-Inch Shower Head on Amazon for $134.61 to $435.80 (price varies based on color)

The best rain-style shower head

Why you'll love it: The low-priced WaterPoint 8-inch Rain Shower Head delivers an impressive amount of water pressure and water volume for a rain shower.

If you’ve hesitated to purchase a rain-style shower head in the past because of concerns over high water usage, the WaterPoint 8-inch Rain Shower Head contains a flow restrictor that limits the shower head to 2.5 gallons of water per minute. You can remove the restrictor if you’d like more water flow as well.

Depending on how you use the shower, removing the flow restrictor may actually help you spend less time in the shower, reviewers say. EBCL Mommy's reviewer was impressed with the coverage area of the WaterPoint rain shower head, which allowed her family to save money with shorter showers. One Amazon customer agreed, saying the ability to use the strong water flow of this shower head to reduce the amount of time spent in the shower is impressive.

The Lucks List appreciated the look and design of the WaterPoint shower head, as well as its ability to deliver a steady water flow. Buyers on Amazon are largely satisfied by their purchase, and the shower head has a 4.7-star rating. Perhaps the best thing about the WaterPoint Shower Head is its low price.

Pros: Delivers a large volume of water, very low price, good water pressure for rain-style shower head, large 8-inch shower head, restrictor inside shower head cuts water usage to 2.5 gallons per minute

Cons: Air intake yields noisy shower head, some plastic in construction

Buy the WaterPoint 8-Inch Rain Shower Head on Amazon for $25.87 (originally $39.95)

The best high-pressure shower head

Why you'll love it: If you prefer a massaging shower jet to a soothing rain-style shower, the Speakman S-2252 Signature Anystream High-Pressure Shower Head is a great option.

If you’re someone who doesn’t like the gentle rain-style shower heads, the Speakman S-2252 Signature Anystream High-Pressure Shower Head will be more your style.

This high-pressure shower head delivers either 2 or 2.5 gallons of water per minute using six adjustable jets that produce 48 individual sprays. Even those with low water pressure at home will receive high-quality results with the Speakman Anystream model. It delivers just the right amount of pressure – not enough, let’s say, to put an eye out, but enough to massage some tired shoulder and back muscles.

The Shower Remedy review says the self-cleaning nozzles in the Speakman shower head are a great feature. Meanwhile, the Best Shower Heads review highlighted the longevity of the S-2252 high-pressure shower head, thanks to its brass construction. Finally, the CanaVP review liked the patented Anystream 360 design of this shower head, which lets it deliver strong water pressure.

One Amazon buyer liked the water pressure the Speakman S-2252 delivers and says it’s easy to remove the water restrictor from the shower head for even greater water flow. However, another Amazon reviewer didn’t like that the shower head has no jets in the center, which left a cold spot in the jet spray.

Pros: High-pressure jet spray even in low water pressure households, adjustable jet sprays, self-cleaning nozzles, six finishes available, both 2.5 and 2 gallons per minute water flow shower heads available

Cons: Higher than average price, no jets in center of shower head

Buy the Speakman S-2252 Signature Anystream High-Pressure Shower Head on Amazon for $75.75 to $113.10 (price varies based on color)

Subway Fresh Forward

Subway is getting a fresh new look.

The fast food sandwich chain, which is the largest restaurant chain in the US, has been struggling.

Last year, sales at the chain fell 1.7 percent and its store count dropped by 359 locations in the US. It was the first time in history that Subway had seen a net loss in stores.

But the chain is hoping a makeover will help revive sales.

The new design has already been rolled out in 12 different locations across the US, Canada, and the UK. Currently, 85 of its existing locations in the US are being remodeled.

"The goal is to eventually have every restaurant redesigned to match the new look," a spokesperson for the brand told Business Insider. The chain has 26,744 total locations.

Check out the new stores below:

The new locations look a lot brighter than your typical Subway store.

They're also a lot more modern, offering free WiFi and USB charging docks.

Last year, Subway unveiled a new logo and started to cut antibiotics from certain products on its menu. However, the brand has still struggled to keep up with evolving eating habits and compete with healthier fast-casual chains.

Some of your favorite Disney movies were almost completely different

$

inside out gg

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Many of your favorite classic Disney films started out much differently from the final product.
  • Movies like "Moana" and "Frozen" made some drastic character changes.
  • Some movies like "The Emperor's New Groove" and "Monsters University" started out as completely different films.

It’s pretty hard to imagine a world in which Disney films didn’t exist, but it might be harder to imagine a world in which these movies didn’t exist with the stories we know. As with all movies, regardless of quality, every Disney film begins with a pitch or a series of storyboards. The development process requires an intricate balance of back and forth between writers, animators, supervisors, and executives. This process is far from a quick and easy one. For example, the development process of a single movie made by Pixar, a Disney subsidiary, can take anywhere between 4-7 years of hard work and costly investment.

Since the development process takes so long, it’s only natural that there are story elements that are left on the cutting room floor. Some original scripts are even required to be entirely rewritten. As intimidating as all of these intensive edits might sound, the results of this process are more than worth the creative struggle.

After all, if some of the following changes hadn’t been made, these movies might not have gone on to become the classics we all know and love.

15. "Frozen"— Elsa was the villain

It’s no small secret that "Frozen" is Disney’s greatest success story. The 2013 film is the highest grossing animated film of all time, bringing in well over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. What might come as a surprise to some viewers, however, is that the hit story about sisters Elsa and Anna originally had a far more wicked twist.

Elsa, the ice queen of Arendelle who learns how to “Let It Go,” was originally the story’s villain who preyed upon a heartbroken Anna. In fact, it was “Let It Go” that convinced Jennifer Lee, the director and screenwriter, to change Elsa from Anna’s nemesis to her beloved but troubled older sister. Thanks to this change, "Frozen" offered its audience a dynamic absent from most Disney princess stories that had come before: the film’s central love story was that of the love shared between sisters.

14. "Zootopia"— Judy Hopps wasn't always the main character

"Zootopia," winner of the 2017 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film, tells the story of a city populated by talking animals. The film’s main character, Judy Hopps, is a rabbit whose dreams of becoming a police officer are consistently dashed because rabbits have never been police officers before. Her character presents the perfect Disney narrative of a young character overcoming obstacles in order to make their dreams a reality.

Yet even though this seems to be an obvious narrative choice, Judy wasn’t originally the film’s protagonist. Nick Wilde, the crafty conman fox who teams up with Judy in the film, was meant to be the story’s focal point. In this original concept, Judy was Nick’s sidekick, until an impulse decision to reverse these characters’ roles came with only a year left before the film’s release. The change allowed for the film to tell a more organically hopeful and emotional story; and as a result, Disney had yet another smash hit on their hands.

13. "The Lion King"— Scar snaps Mufasa's neck

The wildebeest stampede scene in "The Lion King" has become infamous over the years for providing an early source of emotional trauma for young viewers. Simba, still a cub only just beginning his royal training, witnesses his father, Mufasa, trampled to death by a stampede he believes he has caused. In reality, the stampede is orchestrated by Mufasa’s nefarious brother, Scar, in an attempt to seize the power he feels is rightfully his own.

In earlier drafts of the script, Mufasa’s murder was far more graphic and unsettling. Although early drafts lacked the "Hamlet" parallels of brother killing brother, Scar was initially a much larger, more bloodthirsty, and entirely unrelated lion who brutally murdered Mufasa by snapping his neck with the strength of his own jaw. This, however, would have made Simba’s feelings of guilt and his self-imposed exile impossible to execute. And without his exile, there would be no “Hakuna Matata.” So really, this was all for the best.

4 novels Bill Gates thinks everyone should read

bill gates melinda gates

Bill Gates, the former CEO of Microsoft, has said he breezes through about 50 books a year — or about a book a week.

Most of the books are nonfiction. But Gates recommends the few fictional books with as much enthusiasm as the history or science books he loves so much.

Here are the novels he thinks everyone should read.

SEE ALSO: Here are the 5 books Bill Gates thinks everyone should read this summer

"Seveneves" by Neal Stephenson

After a science-fiction dry spell of more than a decade, Gates picked up "Seveneves" on a friend's recommendation, and he says he's grateful for it. "The plot gets going in the first sentence, when the moon blows up," he wrote on his blog.

But that's only the beginning. The world soon learns the entire species is doomed: In two years' time, a cataclysmic meteor shower will destroy all life on the pale blue dot. It's up to humanity to send as many spacecraft into orbit as possible with the hope of escaping the apocalypse.

"You might lose patience with all the information you'll get about space flight," Gates writes, "but I loved the technical details."

'The Heart' by Maylis de Kerangal

Though it may be a novel, "The Heart" is about as close to creative nonfiction as fiction gets, Gates says.

The story involves a man dying in an accident, after which his parents decide to donate his heart. "But the plot is secondary to the strength of its words and characters," Gates wrote on his blog. "The book uses beautiful language to connect you deeply with people who may be in the story for only a few minutes."

The recommendation is courtesy of his wife Melinda, he says, and now he's passing it along to the public.

'The Rosie Project' by Graeme Simsion

A recommendation from Melinda, "The Rosie Project" offered Gates the chance to introspect a bit.

"Anyone who occasionally gets overly logical will identify with the hero, a genetics professor with Asperger’s Syndrome who goes looking for a wife," he wrote on his blog. "(Melinda thought I would appreciate the parts where he’s a little too obsessed with optimizing his schedule. She was right.)"

Gates called the book "clever, funny, and moving," and even remarked that it was one of the most profound novels he's read in a long time.

5 old-school parenting tips you should still use today

kids

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Eating dinner together creates a comforting routine.
  • Letting kids play outside by themselves fosters independence.
  • Failure builds character.

Parenting isn't what it used to be, but t
here are still some holdovers from the good ol' days of letting kids play in the dirt and scrape their elbows.

Dr. Tovah Klein, Director of the Barnard Center for Toddler Development and author of "How Toddlers Thrive," and Angela Lanscoma pediatric occupational therapist and author of "Balanced and Barefoot," talked to INSIDER about parenting tips that seem old-fashioned but are still worth following.

Eat dinner together

Eating dinner together may seem old-fashioned, but it stands the test of time. A family meal allows everyone to connect and talk about their day, and creates a familiar routine that kids find comforting.

One update: no more rules about which parent belongs in the kitchen.

"It seems so 1950s, not that the mothers have to cook anymore," said Klein. "The fathers can cook, too!"

Send them outside by themselves

"It used to be that kids went running off in their backyard or with friends and parents said 'Don't come home until dinner,'" said Klein. "Nobody would do that today, but giving children freedom to play and be on their own... seems very old-fashioned but is very good for kids."

According to Hanscom, playing outside also helps children refine their senses in ways that carry over when they come back indoors.

"Spending time outdoors fosters sensory and motor development, which actually lays the foundation for sensory organization," she said. "Being able to pay attention in school is reliant on that, being able to use the eyes to function and read. Being able to control their emotions also relies on being able to organize the senses."

Let them play with sticks

Hanscom said that playing with raw natural materials increases kids' muscle development and creativity.

"The more practice you get going outside, the more creative you get with using things like sticks in different ways," she said. "The first time you go outside you're going to see a stick and it's just a stick, and then you start experimenting with it, digging in the dirt, and it becomes a tool, and then you realize you can use it to build if you see someone else building with it."

15 actors who are surprisingly incredibly rich

The INSIDER Summary:

  • A-list actors are often worth well over $100 million.
  • Many lesser known actors are also much wealthier than you would think.
  • Stars like Scott Speedman, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Patrick Wilson have made quite a lot of money for their successful movies.

For most of us, a million dollars is an incredible amount of money. However, to the world of acting, it’s mere pocket change compared to the amounts that many actors make. Many of the A-list actors we know today, such as Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Tom Cruise, and Denzel Washington, are worth well over $100 million. These actors earn millions per movie and top most lists for highest paid actors in Hollywood.

However, they aren’t the only ones. There are other actors that make the same amounts and indulge in the same lifestyles, but who are vastly unknown to the public. These lesser known actors are also raking in the big bucks and will definitely change the way you view the entertainment industry.

Get ready for the lifestyles of the rich and famous, because here are the 15 Actors You Never Knew Were Incredibly Rich.

15. Martin Lawrence

“Bad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do when they come for you?” Martin Lawrence starred alongside Will Smith in 1995’s "Bad Boys," but he’s more of a rich boy than a bad boy. In 2017, Lawrence’s net worth was estimated to be $110 million.

His story, however, is an inspiring tale of rags to riches. Lawrence’s mother was a single mom working several odd jobs to raise him and his five siblings. As a teenager, Lawrence aspired to become a professional boxer, but had to rethink his path when he injured his eye.

He turned to comedy and attended open mic nights that ultimately promoted his comedic career. Lawrence landed a spot on "Star Search," and, although he didn’t win, was offered a role on "What’s Happening Now."

From there, Lawrence went on to star in "Martin," a show with over 11 million viewers, before landing roles in films that we now associate with him – "Bad Boys,""Blue Streak,""Big Momma’s House," and "National Security." We will even see him in "Bad Boys 3," which is set to release at the end of 2018.

14. Peter Stormare

Born in Sweden as Rolf Peter Ingvar Storm, Stormare changed his last name to distinguish himself from another actor with the same name. It was under this name, Peter Stormare, in which the actor gained recognition, popularity, and millions of dollars. Peter Stormare has more than 150 television, film, and game credits to his name and, according to multiple sources, a net worth of $215 million.

Stormare gains his popularity through his “bad guy” personality. He regularly plays that villain that we can’t help but love and, although you might not recognize him by name, you may remember him as John Abruzzi in the "Prison Break" television series, the Ghost in "22 Jump Street," or Gaear Grimsrud in "Fargo." He is a triple threat who was even inspired by U2’s Bono to record an album.

Peter Stormare is one of the richest men on this list, and if you don’t believe it, just take a look at his luxurious $47 million home in Sag Harbor, New York.

13. Paul Giamatti

In The Amazing Spider Man 2, Aleksei Sytsevich– or Rhino– is seen stealing plutonium from Oscorp. Sytsevich is obsessed with money and power and will do anything to get his hands on some. This, however, is far different from the actor who plays him.

Paul Giamatti was born into a rich family and didn’t have to worry about money like his film character. His father, A. Bartlett “Bart” Giamatti was once the president of Yale University and the seventh commissioner of Major League Baseball before he died in 1989.

Therefore, Paul was no stranger to the lifestyles of the rich and the famous. He went to private schools and had a very fortunate upbringing. This upbringing is why Giamatti joins his "Big Momma’s House" co-star on this list.

Zaha Hadid, one of the most visionary architects of our time, died at age 65 in 2016.

Over the span of her career, the controversial and uncompromising architect created award-winning museums, condos, stadiums, and pavilions. In her last years, she took on a new challenge: designing a luxury condo complex over the High Line, Manhattan's famed elevated park.

The new condo building will be impressive, with an intricate metal and glass facade sculpted piece by piece. Inside, the high-rise will boast a parking garage with an automatic valet system and the city's first private 3D IMAX theater.

Developer Related Companies broke ground in 2014, and the building opened in June 2017. Now, the building has started selling units, starting with a pair of two-bedroom units with open-layout kitchens and private balconies, according to 6sqft. Measuring 2,147 square feet each, they were sold for $6 million and $6.2 million, respectively. Approximately 60% of the building's units are in contract.

Since it was Hadid's first NYC building and one of her last designs, it will remain a testament to her legacy.

In 2016, Business Insider toured one of the model units. Take a look inside.

Hadid's 135-foot-tall building lives at 520 West 28th Street on Manhattan's far west side. It's two blocks away from Hudson Yards, the new $20 billion neighborhood set to be complete in 2024.

Hadid was known for her curved buildings, many of which featured geometric forms. 520 West 28th Street is no exception.

The stainless metal exterior wraps around to form an L-shape. To create the curves, each panel of cladding was laser-cut.

An electric toothbrush

I've been a big fan of the Sonicare toothbrush ever since I got one as a gift a couple years ago. I like that it forces me to take two minutes out of my morning to properly brush my teeth. Before I had it I was guilty of doing a quick brush on my way out the door, which wasn't enough, especially since studies show the best time to brush your teeth is right when you wake up. — Breton Fischetti, senior director of commerce

A phone case with storage for cards

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten to my subway station only to realize I left my MetroCard on my dresser. So frustrating!

Not only does this phone case from Incipio protect my phone, it houses convenient storage for up to three credit cards. I use it to stow my MetroCard for easy access on my commute to and from work. It’s one less thing I have to remember to bring with me — if I have my phone on me, I have my MetroCard, too. — Ellen Hoffman, commerce editor

How to move to Australia and become an Australian citizen

Like Canada, New Zealand, and France, Australia was a popular fantasy destination among Americans looking for a fresh start in the wake of the 2016 presidential election.

And now that it's summer, many more are likely thinking of moving south to enjoy the mild Australian winter.

For those who want to make the leap and become a naturalized Australian, there are a few things to know ahead of time, such as the requirements for permanent residency and criteria to gain full citizenship.

Here's how to move to Australia and become an Australian citizen.

SEE ALSO: How to move to Canada and become a Canadian citizen

Be at least 16 years old — unless your parent qualifies.

Applicants can gain citizenship through several different routes, but each hinges on the age of the applicant.

People who are 18 or older can apply as adults. People who are 16 or 17 can apply on their own, but they must be already have permanent residence status (more on that in a bit).

People 15 and under and must be a permanent resident and "living with a responsible parent or an unaccompanied humanitarian minor," according to Moving to Australia.

Decide what kind of permanent residence visa you qualify for.

Like many countries, Australia relies on a residency system that proves immigrants have family or work waiting for them in the country.

There are several ways to gain permanent residency, which are required to apply for citizenship. Each type of visa comes with different costs.

The most common route is through an Australian employer who sponsors skilled candidates to come over. "Skilled" is defined by a specific points system created by the Australian government. In these cases, the company will bear the cost, which starts at $2,870.

Business owners and investors can also apply for work visas. Investors need to have at least $1.73 million (AUD$1.5 million) invested for four years just to apply (the application costs an additional $1,740). Business owners can apply for the same price.

Or maybe you have family or a spouse in Australia, in which case ...

... you'll want to apply for the corresponding visa. Australia has a number of options for parents, children, caretakers, adoption, last-remaining relatives, and partners. Costs can vary.

It costs $1,270 for caretakers to apply, while the cost for adult children bringing over a parent starts at $15,400. The high cost avoids a much lengthier process that can take up to 30 years in the non-expedited route, which costs at least $4,700.

In either case, you'll need to sign the Australian Values Statement, a document that affirms you will act legally and in accordance with the country's principles, such as individual liberty and Parliamentary democracy.

How an oil company created an American suburb in Saudi Arabia

p138 Families by the Pond at sunset

Much of the world's oil comes from Saudi Arabia, and it now accounts for 92% of the country's budget

It began in the 1930s, when Standard Oil of California began breaking ground for oil in the country. Working with the Saudi government, SOCAL agreed to employ Saudi nationals within the country, "as far as practicable," as the contract stated.

As American geologists began to also work on the site, they found their new life in Saudi Arabia was foreign to them in many ways. In response, the company, whose name was changed in the 1980s to Saudi Arabian Oil Company — or Saudi ARAMCO — built a compound that imitated the look and feel of an American suburb.

There, Americans working for Saudi ARAMCO could raise their families in a more familiar setting. Photographer Ayesha Malik was born and raised inside the Saudi ARAMCO community in the 1990s, and her new book, "ARAMCO: Above the Oil Fields," explores her experience there.

SEE ALSO: How a Jewish deli run by Muslims became the symbol of a changing neighborhood

The compound is called Dhahran, and it's a 22.5-square-mile gated community built specifically for Saudi ARAMCO employees and their families.

Those who live there often refer to themselves as "Aramcons."

In an interview featured inside the book, Malik reflects on the positive experience she had growing up inside Dhahran.

What the world would look like if all the ice melted

world ice melt

If the world keeps burning fossil fuels and releasing carbon emissions indefinitely, climate change will eventually melt all the ice at the poles and on mountains, according to National Geographic.

This would raise global sea levels by approximately 216 feet, engulfing oceanside cities like Miami, Buenos Aires, and Cairo.

Business Insider made an animated map that shows what the world would look like if this doomsday future came true.

Take a look at the highlights below.

SEE ALSO: Even if every country on the planet cuts emissions, the climate would still be screwed

As soon as the end of this century, climate scientists say that parts of the Earth will become inhospitable. Risks brought on by climate change include mass famine, drought, severe flooding, plagues, poisoned oceans, and record heat waves.

As David Wallace-Wells noted in his recent New York magazine feature, researchers predict that these kind of disasters make war and permanent economic collapse more likely.

The increasingly rapid melting of ice sheets and glaciers is raising sea levels and changing the world's coastlines. Miami, along with the entire eastern seaboard, would be underwater if all the world's ice melted.

Buying a MacBook Pro from Apple's Refurbished Mac store was the best decision I've made for getting a new computer (AAPL)

$
0
0

You'll find Apple's latest and greatest products on its main online and physical stores, but they sure are expensive.

What about slightly older models that you know would suit you just fine and should cost less than the new model purely because they're older? Missing from Apple's main stores are some of its older yet perfectly good products, especially Mac computers.

macbook pros

This is where Apple's Refurbished Mac store comes in. It's a lesser-known outlet for certain older Apple devices, and from my experience, it's certainly worth a look if you're in the market for a new Apple device. You can find cheaper older models — including Macs, iPads, and iPhones — some of which the company doesn't sell anymore in its main retail outlets.

Check it out:

SEE ALSO: Apple is still selling very old and expensive computers – these are the ones you shouldn't buy

You don't always need the latest and greatest.

I wanted to upgrade from my old 15-inch 2012 MacBook Pro, but I didn't necessarily need the latest 2017 model that comes with a hefty $2,400 price tag. From my knowledge of computer parts, I knew the processor in the 2016 model would easily serve my needs for several years, and I was looking to buy the 2016 model instead of the 2017 one for a lower price tag. But Apple doesn't sell it online or in its physical locations.

I saved a lot of money.

I ended up buying a refurbished 15-inch 2016 MacBook Pro with the sixth-generation Intel Core i7 2.6 GHz processor for $1,950. That's $450 I saved from buying the equivalent $2,400 2017 model with a seventh-generation Core i7 processor.

If you break it down, buying the equivalent 2017 model would mean I'd pay $450 for just the new processor, as just about everything else about the 2017 model is identical to the 2016 model. As I mentioned, the 2016's sixth-generation processor is more than enough for my needs.

But isn't is "used"?

As the word "refurbished" suggests, the devices sold in the Refurbished Mac store are used devices that Apple itself has reconditioned. If you're like me and usually balk at the words "used" and "refurbished" because you want a FOF (fresh out of the factory) device, you may be pleasantly surprised by Apple's refurbished devices.
