ted talk food

If you're looking to expand your horizons about the way you eat, look no further than TED— the popular talks on technology, entertainment, and design.

TED speakers have explored everything from life-extending diets to technologies that could revolutionize how the world grows food.

Below, check out some of our favorite short talks on agriculture and food.

"What's wrong with what we eat" by Mark Bittman

In this funny and passionate talk, New York Times food writer Mark Bittman lays out the problems with the standard American diet. He says we eat too much meat, not enough plants, too much fast food, and we rarely cook at home. All these things are putting the planet at risk, but there are simple changes we can make in our everyday lives to curb that.

"Choice, happiness and spaghetti sauce" by Malcolm Gladwell

"Tipping Point" author Malcolm Gladwell talks about Howard Moskowitz, an American psychophysicist known for creating new spaghetti sauces for Prego. By offering consumers as many choices as possible, Moskowitz hoped they would find their favorite one.

In his talk, Gladwell delves into the nature of choices and happiness. He believes that in reality, no one knows what they really want deep down.

"Why dieting doesn't usually work" by Sandra Aamodt

In the US, 80% of girls have been on a diet by the time they're 10 years old. In this talk, neuroscientist Sandra Aamodt shares her struggles with dieting in order to get to a larger point of how our brains manage our bodies.

She breaks down the science behind why dieting doesn't work and how it can harm our minds and bodies. In addition, she suggests ideas for how to eat more intuitively and live a less diet-obsessed life.

Sunday's epic battle on 'Game of Thrones' is similar to one of the most important battles in the history of Westeros

Game of Thrones Daenerys Drogon

"Game of Thrones" always delivers surprises, tears, and tension. But the battle in "The Spoils of War" rivaled the Battle of the Bastards, because we were seriously conflicted who to root for. Jaime, Bronn, and the Lannister/Tarly army? Or Daenerys, Drogon, and the Dothraki?

Going into the battle, we wanted Daenerys to win. But seeing how brutal Drogon's fire breath is, and seeing Jaime watch his army turn to ash, and blow away, changed things a bit.

The battle, which the "Game of Thrones" showrunners have named The Loot Train Attack, is reminiscent of another battle in Westerosi history, called The Field of Fire. The Field of Fire took place during Aegon I Targaryen's Conquest of Westeros, and the similarities are uncanny.

Here's everything you should know about The Field of Fire, and its similarities to The Loot Train Attack:

SEE ALSO: The 12 biggest questions we have after this week's 'Game of Thrones'

What is Aegon's Conquest?

Centuries before the events of "Game of Thrones," Aegon I Targaryen started a campaign to invade Westeros. He wanted to take control over all Seven Kingdoms as the one and only king. The campaign lasted two years, and he won, becoming the first Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and king on the Iron Throne.

Before the Conquest, Westeros was divided into separate kingdoms, each ruled by a local king:

  • Kingdom of the North, ruled by House Stark of Winterfell
  • Kingdom of the Mountain and the Vale, ruled by House Arryn of the Eyrie
  • Kingdom of the Isles and Rivers, ruled by House Hoare of castle Harrenhal
  • Kingdom of the Rock, ruled by House Lannister of Casterly Rock
  • Kingdom of the Stormlands, ruled by the House Durrendon of Storm's End
  • Kingdom of the Reach, ruled by House Gardener of Highgarden
  • Dorne, ruled by House Martell of Sunspear

Some of these names might sound familiar, and some may not.

What is The Field of Fire?

The Field of Fire was a major battle that occurred during Aegon's Conquest. It was a definitive battle that won the war for the Targaryens.

King Mern Gardener of the Reach and King Loren Lannister of the Rock combined their armies to try and defeat Aegon. They had 60,000 men. Aegon's army was outnumbered with only 10,000. But Aegon won the battle because he brought three dragons: he rode one, and his sisters rode the others.

4,000 men were burned alive by dragons alone, and 10,000 men were so badly burned that they were unable to fight. After the battle, Aegon used the swords of the defeated to make the most uncomfortable chair: the Iron Throne.

These are the similarities with Dany's attack in "The Spoils of War:"

Fascinating maps show where the most and least diverse parts of the US are

us diversity

The United States is sometimes billed as a melting pot of racial and ethnic diversity.

But a new map created by astrophysicist Tomasz Stepinski shows how much racial segregation persists in many American towns, cities, and suburbs.

Using census data and NASA satellite maps, Stepinski created a detailed map that shows racial composition levels in nearly every neighborhood in the US.

Six categories of race — non-Hispanic white, non-Hispanic black, American Indian, Asian, Hispanic, and other — are represented by six different colors on the map (as indicated on the key to the right).

diversity map keyIf an area has a high density of a particular race and low overall diversity, it is shaded a dark tone of that color (from the left column in the key to the right).

If an area has a high density of a certain race but medium overall diversity, it's shaded in a less dark color (from the right column in the key). For example, neighborhoods with a high density of white residents and low overall diversity are shaded orange. Places with a high density of Hispanic residents are dark purple. The lighter the shade, the less densely populated that group is.

Areas with high racial diversity levels overall are shaded gray.

The interactive map chronicles data from 1990 to 2010, so users can zoom in and see how areas have changed over time. Stepinski presented his work in April at the annual Population Association of America conference in Chicago.

Here is the state of diversity in seven US cities as of 2010, according to Stepinski's map.

SEE ALSO: 26 photos that show the US-Mexico border's evolution over 100 years

Chicago — one of America's most racially segregated cities — is highly siloed by neighborhood. There are distinct pockets of Hispanic and black residents living downtown, while first-ring suburbs have mostly white residents.

As CityLab notes, decades of racial discriminatory housing policies (some of which still persist today) contributed to segregation in Chicago. For example, following WWII, the Federal Housing Administration explicitly denied home loans for black people in Chicago and other cities across the US.

New York City's neighborhoods are also pretty segregated by race. Manhattan has a fairly high density of white residents, while the most dense populations of black, Hispanic, and Asian New Yorkers are found in upper Manhattan, the Bronx, and parts of Brooklyn and Queens. Jersey City (located west of Manhattan) does not appear to be as segregated.

Gaithersburg, Maryland and other areas north of Washington, DC are fairly racially diverse, as indicated by the dark grey shading.

A preppy apparel startup is defying J. Crew's curse and dominating the millennial market

everlane fashion company office tour 6625

At a time when shoppers are fleeing mall chains like J. Crew, Gap, and Abercrombie & Fitch, the direct-to-consumer fashion label Everlane is thriving.

Founded in 2010, Everlane follows in the footsteps of e-commerce sites like Warby Parker and Bonobos by selling wardrobe staples like T-shirts, cardigans, pants, and loafers online only. (Its first brick-and-mortar store is coming to San Francisco later this year.)

A company representative declined to share revenue for 2016, but Privco, a firm that researches private companies, estimated Everlane's sales at $35 million for 2015. That would be up nearly 200% from 2013.

We stepped into the Everlane headquarters to find out what one of the most innovative companies in fashion is doing differently during the retail apocalypse.

SEE ALSO: Starbucks is opening premium stores where you can buy coffee flights and cold-brew floats — take a look inside

Everlane would like you to believe this is no ordinary crewneck.

These are no ordinary pants, either. They are "versions" of pants. Much like app developers who post frequent software updates, Everlane is constantly iterating on its products.

This model is in stark contrast to how traditional fashion brands operate. Most retailers launch collections based on seasons, so when August rolls around, the stores fill with new sweaters and corduroys in the hope that shoppers scoop them up before Pumpkin Spice Lattés arrive.

But as Quartz pointed out, this approach doesn't reflect how customers actually shop. Most people don't buy new wardrobes all at once. They search out items as they need them.

"Traditional brands launch a ton of stuff and then they look at what sold and what didn't," Michael Preysman, CEO and founder of Everlane, told Business Insider. "We look at it much more on a product-level basis."

Everlane releases small batches of new apparel on a continuous basis throughout the year.

It gathers feedback from customer surveys, return shipments, and in-person "fit clinics," to make products better. In the past, Everlane has swapped the material in a pair of slim wool trousers to make them less itchy and adjusted a shoe sole so feet wouldn't slip out as easily.

These photos reveal how America's definition of the $20.4 billion 'plus-size' market has changed over the years (ASNA)

Lane Bryant

Plus-sized fashion has come a long way since Lane Bryant was founded in the early 1900s.

The brand — which once advertised "slenderizing" clothing for "stout" woman — has transformed into one of the leaders in advertising that puts body positivity front and center.

Lane Bryant's transformation is driven by a shifting culture and growing customer base. The plus-sized clothing market is estimated to exceed $20 billion. According to a Lane Bryant investor presentation from early 2017, the brand believes that figure could reach $40 billion to $50 billion.

"There is, to put it crudely, an insane amount of money just sitting on the table, and it seems, finally, that there are some savvy entrepreneurs out there ready to shrug off fashion’s inherent snobbery and claim a piece of it,"Ashley C. Ford recently wrote in New York Magazine.

Here's how Lane Bryant's transformation shows just how much the definition of plus-sized has changed over the last century.

SEE ALSO: We visited Ann Taylor's new store for the 'ageless generation' and discovered how H&M and Forever 21 are blowing a huge opportunity

For a long time, the plus-size advertising was all about "slenderizing," like this 1936 ad for Lane Bryant signed "Slenderizingly Yours.

All Lane Bryant scans are from The Vintage Lady, a fantastic blog on vintage sewing, with a focus on plus-sized fashion.

"Proud of having been in business for thirty-five years — and proud of having sold wearing apparel to so many millions of stout women during those thirty-five years," founder Lane Bryant wrote in a note to shoppers in 1935.

"Whatever your figure problem, if you're STOUT, I have the style for you," reads another Lane Bryant note.

81Ozv0d nyL._SL1500_We all know making our own meals can save us money and help us be healthier, but it's not always the easiest option. If we're being honest, cooking can sometimes be a nuisance.

There are instructions to follow, ingredients to collect and prep, and dishes to do afterward, which makes it all the more tempting to scrap the whole thing and order take out.

I asked the Insider Picks team about which kitchen tools they use to make cooking easier. These picks can save you time before, during, and after you cook, so you can focus on actually enjoying your meal.

An avocado slicer

I love guacamole, but removing the pit with a knife is pretty dicey. Most avocado tools are just for cutting it up, but the OXO Good Grips 3-in-1 Avocado Slicer does more. It slices the avocado in half, helps you pop out the pit, and cuts perfect slices for avocado toast or guacamole mashing.

A tea infuser

I got really nice loose leaf tea from Harrods during the London leg of my last trip to the UK, but I didn’t have anything to keep the leaves out of my drink, so I bought this twisting tea ball from OXO Good Grips off Amazon for $10.

It’s actually in Insider Picks' buying guide for the best tea infusers, so you can read more about why it’s awesome there.

OXO Good Grips Twisting Tea Ball, $9.95

A foldable cutting board

My house plans were not designed with me — or anyone — in mind. To compensate for limited counter space, I have to sit down at our kitchen table to prep any food, and it's just far enough away from the stovetop to mean some food might fall off the cutting board and onto the ground en route. This foldable one makes the process smoother, and I’m guaranteed to lose fewer ingredients on the way.

Being a 'first spouse' isn't easy — here's how countries around the world handle it

emmanuel macron brigitte macron france

PARIS (AP) — A hullabaloo over the new French president's desire to formalize the role of France's first lady is a reminder that being married to a world leader isn't for timid types.

Below, read how some countries approach the issue — and how some first spouses have broken the shackles of protocol or retreated to the mountains to escape scrutiny.

SEE ALSO: Meet French first lady Brigitte Macron: President Emmanuel Macron's former schoolteacher turned wife who may get a formal role in his administration

Front and center

The United States sets the standard for first ladydom. America's first lady assumes a formal public role that comes with a White House office, but makes it impossible to maintain an ordinary lifestyle.

Michelle Obama left her job as a lawyer to campaign for healthier children. Melania Trump has kept a lower profile so far, but is expected to accompany her husband at major public events and summits.

Few other countries have such codified expectations.

While French first ladies have taken on an increasingly public role, a proposal by President Emmanuel Macron to grant a special budget to finance his wife's official activities has been met with an online petition of protest that is quickly gaining signatures.

Under the radar

In many countries, political spouses stay out of the public eye.

Greece doesn't seem to care that Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras's partner Peristera Pizania rarely appears at official events. Former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi's wife continued working as a schoolteacher in Tuscany while he was in office. Wives of Spanish prime ministers only make the news when they go into politics themselves.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte is single — but even if he were coupled up, his compatriots might not notice, since Dutch politicians tend to keep their private lives out of the public sphere.

Lose-lose situation

It's often difficult however to find the right balance between public action and a private life, especially for presidential wives scrutinized on social media for what they wear as much as what they do or say.

The wife of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Elke Buedenbender, stopped working as a judge out of concern for judicial independence. One of her predecessors, Bettina Wulff, published a book complaining about the role.

The position of first lady in Romania remains sensitive due to the legacy of Elena Ceausescu, who had a major role during the discredited communist regime of dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. Her successors have been expected to remain discreet and quietly supportive instead.

Current Romanian first lady Carmen Iohannis was subjected to a barrage of criticism for clothes deemed too daring for a president's wife, and for holidays deemed too glamorous.

She now lives in the couple's home city of Sibiu and is rarely seen in public. The Iohannis no longer go on foreign vacations and instead go hiking in Romania's Carpathians.

Jordan Spieth goes for the career Grand Slam this week — here are 10 golfers who could play spoiler at the PGA Championship

$

Jordan Spieth

Jordan Spieth has a chance to complete golf's career Grand Slam at the PGA Championship this week. With his stirring victory at last month's Open Championship etched into everyone's memory, the spotlight couldn't be brighter.

But Spieth won't be the only player vying for the Wanamaker Trophy. Dozens of other talented golfers are also in the Tar Heel state, and they all have the same goal: getting a taste of major glory before the year is out.

The course, Quail Hollow, is getting its first shot at a major after years of hosting the PGA Tour's Wells Fargo Championship. While most PGA Tour regulars are familiar with the track, it did undergo some significant renovations in preparation for this week, including new bermudagrass, the removal of hundreds of trees and some new and redesigned holes.

Given those changes, as well as some dicey weather in the weekend forecast, anything can happen this week. Here are ten players who could spoil Spieth's shot at nabbing the career Grand Slam in 2017.

Rory McIlroy

World ranking: No. 4

Best PGA Championship finish: Win, 2012, 2014

Recent results: WGC-Bridgestone - T5 / Open Championship - T4 / Scottish Open - MC

Why he can win: With back-to-back top-fives against world-class competition, McIlroy's form is tantalizing enough on its own. It doesn't hurt that he's owned Quail Hollow over the years, notching a pair of victories and four other top 10s in his career. Length off the tee is always a huge plus at this course, and if the rain falls, he'll be at an even bigger advantage.

Hideki Matsuyama

World ranking: No. 3

Best PGA Championship finish: T4, 2016

Recent results: WGC-Bridgestone - Win / Open Championship - T14 / Irish Open - T14

Why he can win: Just when it looked like Spieth was the biggest threat to dethrone Dustin Johnson as the game's No. 1 player, Matsuyama went bananas at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, shooting a Sunday 61 to earn a decisive win. He ranks second on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained.

Dustin Johnson

World ranking: No. 1

Best PGA Championship finish: T5, 2010

Recent results: WGC-Bridgestone - T17 / Canadian Open - T8 / Open Championship - T54

Why he can win: Johnson has faded from his superb springtime form, but he's still posting positive results more often than not. He also hits the ball longer than just about anyone, and this week's weather forecast should only amplify that strength. A win would be sweet redemption after his nightmare 72nd hole at the 2010 PGA took him out of a playoff and into a share of fifth place, his best finish at the event to date.

6 reasons fall is the best time to travel

$
0
0

paris fall

Fall is coming, and with it stunning foliage, sweater weather, and pumpkin-spiced treats.

But did you know that fall is also one of the best times of the year for travel?

With fewer crowds, lower prices, and an abundance of festivals, here are all the reasons why you should be packing your bags this fall.

The weather is mild

Bring out those sweaters because fall weather is perfect for exploring, whether it's a city or a national park. Not too hot, yet not too cold either, you can explore to your heart's content in a comfortable climate. You won't have to worry about breaking a sweat, and you also won't have to jam bulky sweaters and coats in your suitcase. A true win-win.

Travel is cheaper

For travelers on a budget, fall is one of the cheapest times of the year to travel. Technically the "off-season," both airfare and hotels are generally cheaper in the fall than in the summer or during the holidays.

If you're willing to take a risk, Caribbean travel is especially cheap thanks to the hurricane or rainy season.

Popular destinations are less crowded

Traveling in the fall means avoiding summer crowds, as kids are back in school and many spend their vacation days on summer travel. That means you can forget about making dinner reservations, waiting in lines, or elbowing your way through hordes of other tourists to snap a pic of a popular attraction.

15 games that might make you smarter just by playing them

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

6918664049_77ca6fcef6_bHere at Insider Picks, we’re always looking for ways to optimize your (and our) time and purchases to get the most out of the deal.

One area of optimization that I’ve been particularly drawn to has been games that challenge you to develop your mental skills in a fun and engaging way.

Plus, it only took a summer vacation for me to feel totally out of sync on the first day back in elementary school, and as an adult, it can feel like your skills and expertise are constantly narrowing and thinning; you flex the same mental muscles at work and get better and better at a specialized job, but you stop finding new hurdles to jump over and new puzzles to solve creatively.

Games that challenge you to think differently, imagine, and solve ever-changing problems that don't allow you to get used to them and fly on autopilot are a particularly valuable use of your time: They make you happy and provide enjoyment at the same time that they sharpen your mental abilities.

Whether it’s fiddling with a Rubik’s cube or filling out Sudoku on the subway while you’re stalled, it’s a nice to constantly be improving yourself in a way that doesn’t feel tedious. If you can have fun and become more mentally dexterous, why would you not?

Below are 15 games that rely on your strategic, critical-thinking, and imaginative abilities.

17 healthy versions of your favorite junk foods that are actually worth buying

Bag of Chips

If you're trying to eat healthier, the grocery store can seem like a minefield. Should you indulge in the original junk food you're craving, or go for the healthier alternative brand?

While some swaps aren't worth the money — or the assault on your taste buds — others are smart choices that can satisfy your cravings in a pinch.

INSIDER spoke with Amy Shapiro, R.D., founder of nutrition counseling firm Real Nutrition NYC and Liza DeFazio, MS, RD celebrity nutritionist and author of "The Women's Health Big Book of Smoothies & Soups" to find out their favorite healthier swaps for your junk food cravings.

Keep in mind that no matter what you're eating, you have to be mindful about how much and how often you eat it. If you're craving one of these junk foods, try the healthier alternative instead.

MAC & CHEESE: Banza

This high-fiber mac and cheese scores points with Shapiro as a great gluten free option. It's made from chickpeas and has 18 grams of protein per serving.

If you're not sensitive to gluten, she also recommends Annie's Organics, ideally the whole grain or whole wheat variety of pasta.

CHIPS: Siete Grain Free Tortilla Chips

Shapiro has a few recommendations for your chip fix. One is Siete, a brand which has a few different flavors to pick from. "These chips have whole grains and seeds so more fiber and nutrients," Shapiro told INSIDER.

She also recommends Kettle Potato Chips in Avocado Oil and Sea Snax, popular seaweed snacks with less than a gram of carbs. "Seaweed is loaded with calcium and protein and no carbs so it is great for weight loss, and the same with kale," she said.

BREAD: Dave's Killer Bread

Yes, you can eat bread and still be healthy. Shapiro recommends Dave's Killer Bread or ezekiel bread. The 21 whole grains version of Dave's Killer Bread has 5 grams of fiber and protein.

"Ezekiel is a sprouted bread which means your body will digest it more easily and absorb more of the nutrients," Shapiro says. "Dave's Killer Bread has protein and fiber in it so it will keep you satisfied and not craving more."

10 times Kim and Kourtney Kardashian were mommy-shamed

$

Kourtney and Kim Kardashian

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Kim and Kourtney Kardashian have had quite a few mommy-shamers criticize their parenting.
  • Kim has been mommy-shamed for reasons such as posting nude selfies and using a surrogate.
  • Kourtney has been mommy-shamed for kissing her kids on the lips and allowing her daughter to wear a lip ring.

As the eldest two Kardashians-Jenners, Kourtney and Kim Kardashian have a lot of experience helping their mom raise their younger siblings: Khloe, Rob, Kendall, and Kylie. This experience is likely what prepared them for motherhood when it came time to raise kids of their own.

Kourtney is currently mom to 7-year-old son Mason, 5-year-old daughter Penelope, and 2-year-old son Reign with ex Scott Disick. With husband Kanye West, Kim is a parent to 4-year-old daughter North and 1-year-old son Saint.

Judging from their Instagrams, the kids seem happy and healthy, and Kourt and Kim look like they know what they’re doing. Still, as moms in the public eye, Kourtney and Kim are subject to one of the most disgusting sides of the Internet, no matter how good they are as moms.

We’re talking about the mommy-shamers — a.k.a. annoying trolls on the Internet who somehow find something wrong in everything a celebrity mom does. (Side note: You don’t ever see the children’s fathers facing the same scrutiny.) To call attention to ridiculousness of the shamers, we’ve rounded up 10 dumb AF reasons Kourtney and Kim were mommy-shamed. See them, ahead.

In May, Kourtney was taking a well-needed break to go on vacation when mommy-shamers had to ruin her fun by butting in their noses. Once Kourtney posted a photo of her bottom, the mommy-shamers couldn't help but criticize her for setting a bad example to her daughter, Penelope. They also accused her of negligent parenting for going on a vacation when she should be taking care of her kids. (Who said her kids weren't with her?).

Kim owning a marble table

Last month, Kim was casually snapchatting her new children's line when a viewer noticed a mysterious white substance on a table in the back of her video. The mommy-shamer immediately accused her of snorting cocaine and things spiraled out of control. Not letting the rumors fester, Kim immediately shut them down by explaining that it was sugar dust from a  recent candy party. Realizing she gave the wrong information, Kim then clarified and said the white substance was just a white streak on her marble table.

In July, Kim felt the wrath of mommy-shamers when she dressed her 4-year-old daughter, North, in what appeared to be a corset. The mommy-shamers accused Kim of putting North in danger by fastening such a tight article of clothing around her body. Also, critics slammed Kim for dressing her daughter more mature than she is. Kim responded on Snapchat where she showed that the "corset" was only in the front of a dress, which it was sewn onto, so North's body wasn't actually cinched in.

Sansa Stark Littlefinger Game of Thrones Helen Sloan

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish is the kind of villain everyone loves to hate.
  • This devious character has many secrets of his own.
  • Many events from his past, like his heritage and relationships with other characters, are probably a surprise to casual viewers.

He’s the kind of delicious villain you love to hate. Or… maybe you just hate him. Either way, there’s no denying the major influence Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish has had on the other characters from Game of Thrones— and mostly for their detriment.

Whether he was betraying Ned Stark, scheming to murder a monarch, killing someone who passionately loves him, or making creepy moves on a girl way too young for him, he always seemed to have a plan. His way of playing the game of thrones was to try and plan for every possibility dozens of moves ahead of everyone else, keep his enemies guessing, and always seeming to hold the upper hand.

Naturally, a man who plays his cards so close to the vest has many hidden secrets of his own. There are plenty of things about him that casual viewers (and/or readers) might never know. His past — including events from his childhood up to where we find him when Game of Thrones and the novels begin — is full of surprises. Here’s a deep dive into fifteen commonly unknown things about Littlefinger that many fans are unaware of.

Needless to say, there are spoilers ahead if you’re not caught up on the show or the novels.

15. House Baelish barely exists

Petyr Baelish is the latest in the very short history of his house. House Baelish has no huge castle or grand swath of land to call home. Its seat of power is a minuscule tower which Petyr himself dubbed the “Drearfort,” because he despises its insignificance. (Not to be confused with the Dreadfort, the ancestral home of the treacherous — and now dead — House Bolton.)

On the eastern shore of Westeros just above the Vale of Arryn is a collection of four narrow, extended peninsulas called the Fingers. The Drearfort is located on the very smallest of the Fingers, on a tiny piece of land. This is, incidentally, how Petyr acquired the nickname “Littlefinger.” (More on that later.)

House Baelish’s holdings were meager before Petyr came along and displayed a talent for finances. He is the only remaining member of House Baelish, with no siblings or other family to speak of.

14. He picked his own sigil

The Free City of Braavos is home to the Iron Bank, as well as the House of Black and White, where Arya Stark trained with Jaqen H’ghar and the Faceless Men, learning fighting skills with that horrible Waif girl and learning to wear other people’s faces. Towering high over this city is the Titan of Braavos, a gargantuan statue that serves as a guardian of its namesake city.

The traditional sigil of House Baelish is the head of the Titan of Braavos (for good reason — see #11). The head on the sigil is stone and gray with a Trojan-style helmet and eyes aflame, just like the real Titan. The head is typically displayed atop a green background.

In keeping with his disdain for everything related to his heritage, Petyr Baelish opted to discard the Titan sigil when he came of age. He instead created a new crest that he seems to prefer and brandishes proudly — a mockingbird. This symbol is usually seen over a green background as well, but not always. Why did he choose a mockingbird? It’s never been fully explained.

13. Where's the beard?

In George R.R. Martin’s "A Song of Ice and Fire" novels, Petyr Baelish is described as slender and short, with sharp facial bone structure and a chin beard that ends in a point. Obviously, the pointed beard is there because it makes him appear more eeeeeevil. Think about it: it’s pretty much an upside down pitchfork with a single prong. And everybody knows whose signature accessory is a pitchfork.

On "Game of Thrones," Baelish is played by actor Aidan Gillen, who fits the above description pretty well. He’s slender, and has close-cropped, graying hair. But he’s not short, and he’s never sported the character’s signature pointy beard, opting for a stubbly goatee instead.

You have to wonder if, when the show was in pre-production, the producers and Gillen tried out a look closer to how he’s described in the book, but maybe the style just didn’t look right on the actor?

Tina Lam and Michael Cheng are living their version of the American Dream.

The couple made headlines this week when a San Francisco Chronicle story outed their 2015 purchase of Presidio Terrace — a private cul-de-sac lined by 35 million-dollar mega-mansions.

An unpaid tax bill caused the City of San Francisco to put it up for sale, without the knowledge of the street's wealthy residents. Lam, an engineer in Silicon Valley, and Cheng, a real estate agent, scooped up the street, its sidewalks, and other "common ground" for $90,000.

Now residents are up in arms, in part because the couple wants to charge them rent for using the street's 120 parking spaces. The homeowners association has sued the couple and the city.

We visited the ultra-exclusive Presidio Terrace to see the street for ourselves.

Welcome to one the most exclusive streets in San Francisco.

Presidio Terrace is a block-long, oval street (and private development) that has been run by homeowners who live there since at least 1905, The San Francisco Chronicle reported.

It has attracted some of the wealthiest and most powerful politicians in California over the years, thanks to enhanced security and its isolated location at the top of the peninsula.

The Xbox One is about to get a dramatic update

The Xbox One has a ton of abilities.

You can plug your cable TV box right into it and control television. You can play bleeding-edge blockbuster games on it. You can watch Netflix and HBO and whatever other streaming service you can think of, directly from the Xbox One. It's a cable-TV box and a set-top box and a game console, all at once.

xbox one s

But, in the case of the Xbox One, with great power comes great sluggishness.

To put it nicely, the Xbox One feels muddy and old in general practice — navigating through menus, or even just moving around the console's home screen, feels like a chore. Microsoft says that's all about to change in the next major update to the Xbox One's software.

Here's everything we know about the next major update to the Xbox One, which arrives this fall.

SEE ALSO: The 20 biggest games coming in the 2nd half of 2017

The most obvious update is visual: The Home page of your Xbox One is going to look really, really different.

Gone are the dozens of individual boxes and advertisements and sub-menus and whatever other madness has defiled the Home page of the Xbox One since 2013.

In a move toward austerity, the new Xbox One Home dashboard screen is entirely customizable. In its default format, it contains a list of your most recently used stuff, a link to this month's "Games with Gold," and a direct link to whatever you were last playing. There's also a "suggested friend" box now, and a quick accessibility box for re-mapping gamepad layouts.

There are also two advertisement boxes, because of course there is, but at least one's for something you might actually want (it's based on your usage history).

Just for a quick comparison, here's the current Home screen on the Xbox One:

The next step of the revamp is a concept called "Content Blocks." It enables you to extend your Home screen without cluttering it up.

Perhaps you want your Home screen to house all of your "pinned" applications/games in one place? Or maybe you want a bunch of "Overwatch" content front and center?

With "Content Blocks," you can create a custom "Block" of whatever you want. Scrolling down from the main screen, you'll find whatever "Blocks" you created. Alternatively, you don't have to do any of that.

"If you're a minimalist, you can have your Home and that's it," said Microsoft's Mike Ybarra of Content Blocks. "Or your Home and your Pins, and that's your entire gaming service."

"The Walking Dead" doesn't return to television until October, but AMC just gave fans a sneak peek at what to expect when the show comes back. The network released new photos for the series' season eight premiere teasing new looks at Rick, Michonne, Maggie as they prepare to go up against Negan in an all out war.

The season eight premiere will be the 100th episode of the series. Ahead of the show's return to AMC October 22, keep reading for a sneak peek at eight new photos.

SEE ALSO: 'Game of Thrones' made a sly reference to 'The Walking Dead'

In a photo from the season eight premiere, we see Rick speaking with Maggie.

They're probably starting to formulate a plan between the different communities to go after Negan and his numerous Savior outposts.

Rick will be giving wise words to a lot of people. Here he is with Father Gabriel.

We're guessing Rick may leave Father Gabriel in command of Alexandria to protect it from the undead while he's gone. Someone also has to keep an eye on his daughter Judith, and Gabriel has proved himself in the past when times got heated to keep her safe from harm.

Daryl will also be on the show's season eight premiere on his favorite vehicle of a choice: a motorcycle.

After escaping from Negan, Daryl is trying to keep a low profile from being found. He was told by Rick to stay in the Kingdom so Negan's Saviors don't find him. It was heartbreaking for Daryl, but we think he'll have a few friends to keep him company.

The 14 foods to eat when you have a stomachache

eating fruitThe INSIDER Summary:

  • Stomach aches can be brutal and hard to cure.
  • Bland food is best when trying to clear up a stomachache.
  • From crackers to apples, these are the foods you should eat when you have an upset stomach.

Do you know anyone who wants to keel over, crying out in pain from how horrible their stomach feels at the moment? No one? Right, exactly. Stomach aches are BRUTAL, especially when you're supposed to be having fun over a long weekend. In my case, that happened to be Thanksgiving last fall, during which I ate a horrendous bratwurst/hot dog concoction in Germany. It reared its ugly head when I discovered I contracted food poisoning on my flight to Barcelona the next day. Lovely. Luckily, my friends helped to cure me with the blandest of bland foods, and I became aware of what to eat with a stomach ache. Now as a survivor of blind faith in bratwurst, I'm here to assist with a list of what to eat when those stomach cramps finally hit. I apologize in advance.

1. Bananas

This is the B in the BRAT diet that our moms encouraged us to follow when our tummies were hurting as youngsters. Bananas provide your body with some much-needed electrolytes to whip your GI tract back into shape. These yellow bunches also offer potassiumto aid your belly when it's been ravaged by diarrhea and/or vomiting. Hey, we've all been there guys. But this is real talk on how to ease your future pains.

2. Rice

The R in the BRAT diet, starchy white rice--mind you, not healthy, whole grain brown rice with plenty of manganese—is very easily digestible, like bananas. White rice also helps to coat the lining of the stomach and soothe your belly by absorbing nasty toxins from unsanitary bratwurst that should not be served to humans.

3. Applesauce

Applesauce fulfills the A part of the BRAT diet because of its pectin properties. Pectin works as a thickening agentto help form solid stool and prevent recurring diarrhea.
