Football is back!

After the Patriots and Chiefs kick off the season on Thursday night, football fans will be treated to a full slate of games on Sunday including a few fantastic matchups between proven teams (Packers vs. Seahawks) as well as new powerhouses that could take over the league this year (Titans vs. Raiders).

The return of football also brings the return of the time-honored tradition of gambling on football.

So if you care to join me, this year I'll be doing my best to pick every game against the spread to the best of my abilities. For some games I'll do my best to offer you genuine gambling insight, for others, my picks will be based on gut and feel and how much I enjoy watching J.J. Watt and Derek Carr play football. But I promise to always be honest, and do my best to keep our wallets relatively intact along the way.

With that said, it's absolutely beautiful to have football back in our lives. Let's get to picking.

Kansas City Chiefs (+9) at New England Patriots (Thursday, 8:30 p.m. ET)

The pick: Chiefs +9

The logic: Ugh what an awful way to start this experiment. The Patriots make gamblers look dumb week in and week out, and this game will likely be more of the same. Between Andy Reid vs. Bill Belichick, Alex Smith vs. Tom Brady, the Patriots receiving corps of Cooks, Gronk, Hogan, and Amendola vs. Travis Kelce and not much else, none of the matchups look good.

But points are important when betting on sports, and nine points is a lot. Since 2000 these teams have met eight times and the Chiefs have covered nine points six of those times, and fell one point short on another occasion. When the Chiefs and Patriots met in the playoffs last season, they lost by just a touchdown.

There's a 70% chance this pick will look ridiculous five minutes into the game after the Pats have sprinted to a 14-point lead after electing to kick, but the Chiefs shouldn't be nine point dogs.

New York Jets (+8) at Buffalo Bills (Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET)

The pick: Bills -8

The logic: Laying eight points with the Bills and Tyrod Taylor's questionable health seems like an odd choice, but the Jets appear to be openly tanking the season, and it would be a brutal blow to their chances at the first overall pick next year to win their opening game. The Bills will be excited to play at home and have the unique opportunity to absolutely destroy someone. Why not run up the score?

Atlanta Falcons (-7) at Chicago Bears (Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET)

The pick: Bears +7

The logic: Sure, it's Mike Glennon going up against the team that almost beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl, but it would be a crime not to bet the first home underdog of the season.

The 13 most recommended companies in the UK

LONDON – A recommendation from a friend can carry a lot of weight when looking for a new job.

Surely if someone you know and respect enjoys their job at a particular company, you would too. Plus, you get to spend extra time with your buddy.

Obviously, it should never be the defining factor in choosing a job, but knowing people similar to you fit in with the company is a good sign.

As such, jobs review site Glassdoor ranked the companies in the UK where the highest proportion of staff would recommend the firm to their friends, by looking at its "Recommend to a Friend" ratings.

At all of the top 13 most recommended companies, more than 75% of staff would encourage their mates to join the firm. Tech firms dominate the list, but a handful of more traditional major firms working in consulting and utilities also make the top 13.

"The recommend to a friend rating is a bit like a net promoter score, but for employees, so  it can make a big difference to recruiting informed candidates," Glassdoor's UK Country Manager, David Whitby said in a statement.

Check out the most recommended companies below (scores indicate the percentage of staff who'd recommend the company to others).

Here's how much paid leave new mothers and fathers get in 11 different countries

newborn babies phillipines hurricane 2013

The Trump administration earlier this year included a plan for paid parental leave in its 2018 budget proposal, with a stated goal of offering eligible workers six weeks of leave.

The proposal was a landmark: The US is one of eight the UN's 193-member states that do not already have a national program for paid parental leave. Questions remain whether the proposal will ever make it into policy, but its inclusion highlights a national and international conversation about paid leave.

Business Insider has several editions worldwide, and we asked our international colleagues about the parental-leave policies in their respective countries. Several of them, including Ghana and Singapore, are talking about extending leave periods, and in some other countries, such as Australia, market forces are pushing companies to increase their support for new parents as they look to recruit and retain talent.

Here's what parental leave is like in 11 countries.

Australia: There is a legal requirement to provide 12 months' maternity leave.

How much time off, if any, is afforded before the baby is due? How much time off after the birth is afforded?

Time off before birth is not specified under law, but most women stop work a few weeks before their due date. There is a legal requirement to provide 12 months of maternity leave. New mums can also ask for an extra 12 months, for a range of factors, including if there are complications with health or in the family.

What is the pay during the time off, and how does it change over time?

The payment is $695 per week, for a maximum of 18 weeks. Almost all new mums — anyone on a salary of up to $150,000 per year — can access this. This includes small-business owners and one-person companies — for example, it applies to someone who provides a beautician service from home, even if that business is running at a loss. The qualifying criterion is that the person has been doing the same thing for 10 months of the 13 months before birth.

Is there any support toward childcare costs? How much does childcare cost?

Childcare in Australia is a major social issue, particularly in densely populated areas on the east coast. There is significant support for childcare: 50% of the cost is repaid by the federal government, though this isn't available to families on high incomes. The amount of government relief is capped at over $7,000 per year, a benefit aimed at encouraging people into work after the arrival of additions to the family.

Childcare can cost well in excess of $100 per day in some parts of the major cities. There's a shortage of childcare workers and childcare spaces in the major cities, and successive governments have wrestled with how to tackle it with varying levels of success. As a result, promises to include childcare benefits are a political weapon for the major political parties.

What % of women return to work within a year after childbirth?

Official statistics show that in 2011, over half (53%) of Australian mums had returned to work by the time their child was 2 years of age. For most, this was to part-time or reduced hours of work. It is a legal requirement that the role vacated for maternity leave is still available when a new mum is ready to return to work.

How much time off is afforded for paternity?

New dads get two weeks off, at the national minimum wage of $695, as long as they earned an individual income of $150,000 or less. This ensures most dads get two weeks' paid leave at home.

While these are the legally required minimums, Australia for many years was the only OECD country beyond the US to have no legally mandated maternity leave. This was changed in 2011, with the introduction of maternity leave for at least 12 weeks at the national minimum wage. Parenting support is now a major source of competition in some major professional sectors, with more generous work-life balance and in-office childcare facilities being among major draw cards that companies offer to attract staff.

Paul Colgan, Business Insider Australia

Ghana: There are plans to extend maternity leave from 12 to 16 weeks.

How much time off, if any, is afforded before the baby is due? How much time off after the birth is afforded?

There are plans to extend the maternity leave from 12 weeks to 16 weeks for mothers.

What is the pay during the time off and how does it change over time?

The pay is the same as the salary on an employment contract and does not change.

Is there any support toward childcare costs? How much does childcare cost?

Private companies might enlist employees in health-insurance programs to offset some of the cost of childcare. Childcare is expensive and could cost as much as a $1,000 a month.

What % of women return to work within a year after childbirth?

About 65%.

How much time off is afforded for paternity?

As a father in Ghana, there is no paternity leave by law. But the Constitution Review Implementation Committee has proposed a statutory five-day paternity leave for male workers. In this review, the male worker will still be entitled to his salary.

India: Mothers get 26 weeks' leave.

How much time off, if any, is afforded before the baby is due? How much time off after the birth is afforded?

Female employees can get paid maternity leave for 26 weeks. This benefit can be used by women for a period extending up to eight weeks before the expected delivery date and remaining 18 weeks can be availed after childbirth. But a woman with two or more children already is entitled to 12 weeks' maternity leave (that is, six weeks prenatal and six weeks postnatal expected date of delivery).

What is the pay during the time off and how does it change over time?

A mother is entitled to maternity benefits at the rate of her average daily wage for the period of her absence, for a maximum period of 26 weeks. The average daily wage means the average of the woman's wages payable to her for the days on which she has worked during the period of three calendar months immediately preceding the date from which she absents herself because of maternity.

There is a condition to this: The employee can claim maternity leave only if she has worked at least 80 days for her employer in the past 12 months. The company will pay full wages to her and not just the basic salary.

Is there any support toward childcare costs? How much does childcare cost?

There's no support toward childcare cost yet. But the recent amendment to India’s maternity law that has been passed this year and is effective April 1, 2017, onward, allows:

—A work-from-home option, which may be exercised after the expiry of the 26 weeks leave period. Depending upon the nature of work, female employees may be able to avail this benefit on terms that are mutually agreed with the employer.

—Crèche (day nursery): The MB Amendment Act makes crèche facility mandatory for every establishment employing 50 or more employees. Women employees would be permitted to visit the crèche four times during the day.

What % of women return to work within a year after childbirth?

There is no official data to suggest the exact percentage of women abandoning their career after childbirth, but a survey by industry body Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry suggests that a quarter of women in India don’t return to work after having their babies. This is one of the most credible surveys for reference.

The challenge for India is different than other countries. According to a 2013 World Bank study, only 27% of the female population over 15 is working in India. This is the lowest rate of women's participation in any workforce.

How much time off is afforded for paternity?

There is no provision on paternity leave in Indian labor law for private-sector workers. The civil servants (Central Government), however, are entitled to paternity leave. A male civil servant with less than two children is eligible for paternity leave for a period of 15 days before or up to six months from the date of delivery of the child. Paternity leave must be taken within six months of the birth of child. Workers on paternity leave are paid their leave salary equal to the pay drawn immediately before proceeding on leave.

NFL POWER RANKINGS: Where all 32 teams stand going into Week 1

$

Tom Brady Gronk Patriots

Football is finally back.

It was an eventful offseason, with big trades involving draft picks, players coming out of retirement, and some stars choosing not to "stick to sports."

Whether your team is getting ready for another year as odds-on favorites or busy rebuilding, every team for now is 0-0 and anything is possible over the next 17 weeks.

Now that we know who's starting (mostly), sitting, and ready to break out for a big year, here's a look at where all 32 teams stand entering Week 1 of the NFL season.

32. New York Jets

Last season: 5-11, fourth in AFC East

Week 1 opponent: at Buffalo Bills

One thing to know: The Jets appear to have taken on the ambitious goal of executing the most obvious tank the league has ever seen. Josh McCown will be starting under center, and once touted draft pick Christian Hackenberg has been relegated to third on the depth chart, bringing even more doubt into his NFL future. Godspeed to any Bilal Powell fantasy owners.

31. San Francisco 49ers

Last season: 2-14, fourth in NFC West

Week 1 opponent: vs. Carolina Panthers

One thing to know: The 49ers opted to keep just one quarterback behind Brian Hoyer: rookie C.J. Beathard. If Hoyer struggles, it will be interesting to see whether the 49ers seek out more experienced backups.

30. Chicago Bears

Last season: 3-13, fourth in NFC North

Week 1 opponent: vs. Atlanta Falcons

One thing to know: Despite trading up to draft Mitch Trubisky back in April, the Bears are riding with Mike Glennon as their starting quarterback to begin the season. There's no guarantee as to how long he'll hold on to the job, but it's safe to assume Bears fans may get a bit impatient if his play isn't up to snuff to start the year.

Hurricane Irma has spent the past day and a half wreaking havoc in the Caribbean. Irma is now a Category 4 storm, having downgraded from Category 5, the strongest possible designation. It featured wind speeds of up to 185 mph.

At least 14 people have died in the storm, dozens are injured, and thousands have been left homeless.

It has ravaged five countries in the region and is headed for more. Ultimately the storm will hit the US, with Florida and Georgia braced for a battering.

Hurricane Irma first hit Barbuda, a tiny Caribbean island. It was said to be more than 90% destroyed by the storm, with some of the damage evident in these local TV images.

Britain's newest mega-warship has officially been named after this lavish ceremony

HMS Prince of Wales naming ceremony

Britain's newest warship has officially been named, in a lavish ceremony involving a marching band, dancers, royals, and a fine single-malt whisky.

The official naming ceremony for HMS Prince of Wales took place on Friday morning at Rosyth Dockyard, in Fife, Scotland, where the new aircraft carrier is being built.

The Prince of Wales is the second of two new carriers for the Royal Navy. The first, HMS Queen Elizabeth, has been finished and is preparing for active duty.

The Naming Ceremony is a naval tradition dating back thousands of years, and symbolises the blessing of a new ship, according to the Aircraft Carrier Alliance, which is assembling the vessel.

Friday's ceremony was attended by the ship's namesake, Prince Charles, (also known as the Prince of Wales) and his wife Camilla.

In Scotland the two are traditionally referred to by their Scottish titles, as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay.

Take a look at the photos below for the ceremony.

Here's the ship on Friday morning preparing for its big day.

"An awesome sight,"the Ministry of Defence tweeted.

The ship's construction started in 2011 and has cost the government £3 billion ($3.9 billion). The massive cost was criticised as the UK faced a rising defence budget.

How 21 TV stars hid their pregnancies during shooting

$

the americans season 4 keri russel

If your favorite female TV character is wearing baggy clothing, holding groceries, suddenly "getting fat," or standing behind random props, a coverup may be in play.

Mindy Kaling recently confirmed that she's pregnant. And while the sixth and final season of "The Mindy Project" premieres on Hulu September 12, she likely didn't have to hide a bump because shooting was probably complete before she started showing. But that got us thinking about the lengths TV shows have gone to conceal pregnancies, or write them into the show.

Actresses, props teams, and everyone behind the camera do a lot to hide pregnancies during filming. Gal Gadot's pregnancy had to be hidden while shooting an additional scene for "Wonder Woman." But this is more frequently an issue for TV actors, as shows have season deadlines that aren't always as forgiving as the ones for films.

Not every pregnancy can be written into a character's storyline. So shows get creative in maneuvering around baby bumps. Often that just means the actresses are draped in comically oversized clothes, winter lasts forever because the coats are convenient, or actresses are hidden behind randomly placed objects. Or they're simply filmed from the chest up.

Take a look at which actresses were pregnant while filming and how their TV hid it:

SEE ALSO: These are the 10 highest-paid actors in the world

Kerry Washington: The attempts "Scandal" took to hide its star's pregnancy in season three were often laughed at by the media and fans. From the gigantic coats, ridiculously placed objects, and chest-up-only shots, "Scandal" used every trick. And it took a toll on Washington. She said filming was a "challenge" because her "instrument was changing and evolving every day."

Source: The Hollywood Reporter

From TV Guide, check out 20 of the "most ridiculous" ways the show tried to cover up Washington's pregnancy.

Lucille Ball: The comedy icon was pregnant during the second season of "I Love Lucy." Though CBS allowed Ball's pregnancy to be included in the story, the episode that revealed her condition famously was not allowed to actually use the word "pregnant" and found Lucy in some very oversized coats as she wasn't supposed to be as far along as Ball was in real life.

Alyson Hannigan: She was pregnant twice in her "How I Met Your Mother" career — the first time it was hidden, while the second coincided with her character Lily's pregnancy. The first time around, the creators decided to take some humorous liberties. They hid her behind basketballs and globes, but then showed her full belly, pretending it was the aftereffect of a hot dog eating competition. Costar Cobie Smulders, however, didn't get to show off her baby bump in the show's fourth season. Instead, she was given loose clothing and big handbags.

8 things I learned about money after traveling around Europe with my kids for 3 weeks

woman laughing travel

In early June, my husband and I took a bucket list trip to Europe with our kids.

While we've visited countless countries worldwide as a couple, this was our first "big trip" with our daughters, ages six and eight.

In addition to the four of us, we took a family caregiver to help with the kids and give Mom and Dad a break. Over the course of 19 days, we spent time in Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. The entire ordeal was exhausting, but it was an absolute blast!

Fortunately, we planned far enough ahead that we didn't spend too much out of pocket while we were there. By leveraging travel rewards credit cards and setting a daily spending budget, we were able to get the entire trip, which would normally cost $20,000 retail, for around $3,500.

In addition to the virtues of planning ahead as a savings strategy, we learned numerous financial lessons during our travels. While we were aware of most of these lessons already, seeing the world through our children's eyes served as the perfect reminder of the reasons behind some of our most important financial decisions.

Here are a few lessons we relearned thanks to our trip abroad.

SEE ALSO: The top 10 hotel rewards programs where it's easiest to earn a free night's stay

DON'T MISS: The 17 best places in Europe to visit this summer that don't cost a fortune

1. Failing to plan means planning to fail

One of the most expensive components of our trip was dining, mostly because there were five people in our group. No matter how cheaply you try to eat, feeding five people three meals a day means your food budget adds up quickly.

While we tried to minimize our food costs by eating breakfast in our condo and searching for budget options, there were times where we didn't plan ahead and paid a steep price for our lack of preparation.

One meal in particular stands out. We traveled by train to Rome in the morning and arrived in early afternoon without researching restaurants or stores in the immediate area. In a tired and hungry daze, we entered the first restaurant we walked past near Piazza Navona.

Unfortunately, we paid big time for this oversight. Not only was the food overly touristy (pictures on the menu — blech), but our lunch set us back nearly $90. If we had searched ahead of time, we would have known we could have found much cheaper (and probably tastier) options had we walked a block in the other direction.

2. Expensive does not equal better

That meal also served as a reminder that expensive isn't always better. We paid $90 for a lunch that was mediocre at best on that particular day, but at other times we enjoyed meals that were absolutely delicious and downright cheap.

One that comes to mind was a meal we had in nearby Florence, Italy. In order to keep our food budget under control, we started researching local restaurants once we arrived. Eventually, we stumbled upon a sandwich shop — Panini Toscani — that was uber-cheap but was also the third highest rated restaurant in Florence.

We wound up eating there twice. The food was delicious and convenient, and our total meal for five people was less than $20 both times.

3. Even budget trips can be fun

By the time we got to Switzerland (our last stop), I was pretty tired of spending money in general. So, when we had our final "free day" in the country, I spent some time looking for something fun and affordable to do.

Eventually, I remembered a town we drove by that had the most beautiful, clear-green lake I had ever seen. After looking up the details, I found that the tiny village of Lungern had a public beach and a few water slides with a daily admission cost of about $5.25 per adult.

This relatively cheap day was probably the most fun we had. All of us swam and rode waterslides the entire day, stopping only to have a low-cost lunch.

It just goes to show that budget travel can absolutely be fun, and that you don't have to spend a ton of money to enjoy yourself.

lazy bear supper club san francisco 7

Lazy Bear is not your average restaurant. You sit where you're told, eat what's put in front of you, and make polite conversation with strangers throughout the meal.

And for a seat at San Francisco's most exclusive supper club, you leave nearly $300 on the table.

Founded in 2009, Lazy Bear started out as an underground supper club in the home of chef-owner David Barzelay. The lawyer-by-training invited his friends to feast, but the guest list quickly snowballed as word spread of his unique dining experiences. Six years later, Barzelay opened a brick-and-mortar shop off Mission Street and has packed the house for two nightly seatings ever since.

Getting in isn't easy. Each month, Lazy Bear posts a tweet revealing the date and time tickets for dinner the following month go on sale. Tickets for weekends often sell out within a day.

We spoke with Barzelay to learn how Lazy Bear became a coveted dining experience.

SEE ALSO: Inside the $600-a-head Silicon Valley restaurant where Google and Apple executives eat gold-flecked steaks

You might say Lazy Bear Supper Club is a restaurant that could only exist in San Francisco.

Barzelay, a law school graduate with no formal culinary training, developed his culinary IQ out of his dorm kitchen. He enjoyed combining familiar flavors in explosive dishes.

In 2009, he decided to turn his in-home dinner parties into an underground supper club that was open to the public. Guests sat around a communal folding table in a space he rented.

Barzelay said he never had any intention of growing the club into a business. But within two years, he was working full-time on Lazy Bear and started looking for an "above ground" space.

Lazy Bear reopened in an industrial space with high ceilings and no walls between the kitchen and the dining room. Guests eat at two long American elm tables for two nightly seatings.

Barzelay liked the intimacy of the supper club and wasn't sure if it would work at scale.

"When we opened with this communal model, we told everyone — and I think we at least half-believed it — that we were only going to do it that way for a little while," Barzelay said. "We honestly thought there was a pretty good chance that we couldn't fill it for very long. All the people on the waitlist would filter through, and we would go to a normal a la carte model."

There are more than 120 different Emmy award categories. And that doesn't even include the retired ones.

The huge number of awards — compare it to the Oscars, which has 24 categories — means that a lot of people are winners. They're split between Primetime Emmy Awards, Primetime Emmy Engineering Awards, and Creative Arts Emmy Awards categories, which means that many winners and nominees are known only within the industry. But a lot of obscure categories also means that a good number of famous people get lost among all the gold.

Amy's Drive Thru fries and food

Fast food is a guilty pleasure many Americans find impossible to avoid. But Amy's Drive Thru is a first-of-its-kind restaurant serving up organic, local, vegetarian, and non-GMO fare — and it's ready to take over the US.

Amy's Drive Thru is aiming to become America's first vegetarian national fast-food chain, competing with giants like McDonald's and KFC, Fast Company reported.

Two years after the company opened its first location in Rohnert Park, California, business is booming. According to Fast Company, six new Northern California locations are currently in the works.

Amy's has been an established food brand for over 27 years, stocking sections of Whole Foods and other grocery stores.

"Over the years we felt we've been part of changing frozen food," Operations Director Paul Schiefer told Tech Insider in 2016. "And we had customers and partners saying, 'Hey I wonder if you can do the same thing for fast food.'"

Last year, we decided to visit Amy's Drive Thru's pioneer restaurant, located just an hour drive north of San Francisco, to see for ourselves how the meatless fare stacks up to established fast-food eateries.

Scroll down to learn more.

When you think of Amy's, you probably think of frozen lunches or organic soup. The company's products are sold in chain grocery stores nationwide.

But this is its first foray into fast food. Amy's chose to open the flagship in Sonoma County, home to its national headquarters and food packaging plant.

We arrived at Amy's Drive Thru — 58 Golf Course Drive West in Rohnert Park, California — on a dreary winter day. We were struck by the barn-like design that felt modern with the help of a bright turquoise logo.

hand mixer 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • The best hand mixers make mixing batches of cookies, mashed potatoes, pizza dough, and other ingredients an easy task for cooks of all skill levels. The Vremi Electric 3-Speed Hand Mixer is our top pick with its attractive design, durable construction, and built-in storage for the beaters.

When it comes to heavy duty mixing, stand mixers cannot be beaten. However, these behemoths are expensive and a bit unwieldy for the lighter duty tasks. This is where hand mixers are most useful. Hand mixers are ideal for combining the ingredients for batches of cookies, creating a delicious meringue, and breaking down vegetables.

Space is rarely an issue with hand mixers since they are lightweight and compact enough to fit in the smallest of spaces in your cupboard. Instead, the biggest concerns when choosing a unit for your kitchen is what you want to do with it and what your budget is. The appliances on our list range from around $20 to $100, but the more expensive hand mixers provide more versatility and accessories. Also, you should look for a good warranty if you plan on using your hand mixer frequently.

We spent hours researching many user and expert ratings and reviews to bring together the top hand mixers based on functionality, value, and consistent performance. Our list is based on an analysis of the most common positives and negatives associated with the top models available on the market.

Although the Vremi Electric 3-Speed Hand Mixer is our top pick, for various reasons laid out in the slides below, you should also consider the Cuisinart Power Advantage Plus 9-Speed Handheld Mixer, the KitchenAid 9-Speed Digital Display Hand Mixer, the Hamilton Beach Hand Mixer, and the KitchenAid 7-Speed Digital Hand Mixer.

The best hand mixer overall

Why you'll love it: Lightweight, ergonomic, and powerful, the Vremi Electric 3-Speed Hand Mixer has all the characteristics of a superb hand mixer at a low price.

Weighing in at two pounds, the Vremi Electric Hand Mixer is about as light as they come, which is a must when you are mixing up a double batch of cookie dough. Plus, it has an easy-grip handle to keep your hand from tiring out. Despite its small size, this model packs a 150-watt power three-speed motor.

When you are done with your mixing task, you will need to hand wash the beaters since they are not dishwasher safe, but they are stainless steel, so grime is unlikely to adhere too strongly to them. The sharp, modern shape features integrated storage. You simply snap the beaters onto the unit’s sides. The whole mixer fits in a 7.3 by 2.4 by 4.3-inch space.

Just about all of the experts put the Vremi Electric Hand Mixer in their top 10 lists. Hot Rate gave it a positive review because it isn’t as loud as other mixers, is easy to use, and has a handsome design. Village Bakery liked how easy it is to keep all of the parts organized with the built-in storage. The site also gave it high ratings for its lightweight size and for how easy the unit is to clean. The10Pro was a fan of the attractive, modern shape and the ergonomic, easy-grip handle.

Some 87% of the reviewers on Amazon gave the Vremi Electric Hand Mixer five stars. Users like how portable it is and how it’s easy to keep the beaters attached to the unit when not in use. One reviewer appreciated that it can be used with one hand and even a child can operate it (with adult supervision). The most common complaint from buyers is that the slowest setting is still a little too fast for some jobs.

Pros: Stylish design with easy, built-in storage and an ergonomic handle

Cons: Speed settings are a bit too fast

Buy the Vremi Electric Hand Mixer 3 Speed with Built-in Storage Case on Amazon for $21.99 (originally $49.99)

The best hand mixer for heavy-duty tasks

Why you'll love it: Most hand mixers have motors in the 100- to 150-watt range, but the Cuisinart Power Advantage Plus 9-Speed Handheld Mixer packs 220 watts of power.

The Cuisinart HM-90 Power Advantage Plus hand mixer is ideal for heavy-duty tasks thanks to its 220-watt motor. You can control the nine speed options with the same hand that's holding the mixer so you can use your other hand for other tasks, such as holding the bowl. There are three slow start speeds that keep ingredients from splattering. The device comes with a spatula, chef’s whisk, dough hooks, and beaters that store easily in the snap-on storage case. This mixer also comes with a three-year limited warranty.

The expert sites mainly give the Cuisinart HM-90 positive reviews. All Kitchen strongly recommended the Power Advantage Plus for people in need of a home mixer because it is practical and performs well. Appliances Reviewed found the extra length of the whisks, dough hooks, and beaters to be particularly advantageous for cleaning up after your task. The reviewers do note that when you first turn the mixer on, the motor will “overspin” before settling to the speed setting you choose. This model is one of the highest rated mixers on Cooking Hacks because of its power and accessories.

More than 1,000 buyers on Amazon gave the Cuisinart HM-90 positive reviews. There is a long list of reasons why buyers liked this model, including the powerful motor, the LCD screen, the nine speeds, the useful storage area, the lengthy cord, and the latch release for the beaters, which keeps them in place unless you purposely remove them. One reviewer mentioned that a piece broke on his after about 18 months of use. He contacted Cuisinart, and they sent him a whole new replacement unit.

Pros: Powerful motor, 9 speeds, easy storage

Cons: You need to be careful when you first turn it on

Buy the Cuisinart HM-90BCS Power Advantage Plus 9-Speed Handheld Mixer with Storage Case on Amazon for $61.66 or $67.56

The best hand mixer for dry ingredients

Why you'll love it: In addition to its dependability and attachments, the KitchenAid 9-Speed Digital Display Hand Mixer does well at slower speeds to help you avoid making a mess.

KitchenAid is one of the most trusted names when it comes to stand mixers. Its products also tend to be a bit pricey. So, it’s only natural that the KitchenAid 9-Speed Digital Display Hand Mixer is the most expensive model on our list. However, you get a lot for what you pay for since the unit comes with a whisk, turbo beater accessories, an accessory bag, dough hooks, and a liquid blender rod. The mixer has nine speed settings, including a slow start.

Trust Reviews liked the KHM920A hand mixer because of the many attachments it came with. The site gave it 4.5 stars and recommended it to people who need a mixer for weekend baking as well as everyday cooking. All Kitchen also gave this KitchenAid model 4.5 stars because it is efficient, reliable, and well-built. Foodal labeled it the “Best in Class” mixer due to its dependability and ability to handle everything from heavy bread dough to delicate angel food cakes. They also liked that it was light.

Some 86% of the reviews of the KitchenAid KHM920A on Amazon were for four stars or more. Buyers appreciated how the model was able to handle thick dough, such as shortbread cookie dough. Also, this unit has a true slow start so your ingredients are unlikely to end up coating your kitchen. One top reviewer recommended this hand mixer to anyone who wants a KitchenAid stand mixer but doesn’t have the money or space for one.

Pros: Dependable, comes with several attachments, digital display

Cons: Expensive

Buy the KitchenAid KHM920A 9-Speed Digital Display Hand Mixer Amazon for $99.99 and up (price varies by color)

Arguably, the best part of watching an awards show is seeing the extravagant and sometimes outlandish outfits that stars flaunt on the red carpet.

The Primetime Emmy Awards, which honor TV's biggest names, is no exception and never disappoints when it comes to celebrity fashion. The 2017 show will take place on September 17, and we can't wait to see what some of Hollywood's most famous celebrities will wear.

Until then, we've looked back at some of the most stunning looks celebrities have worn to the annual awards show in the past, with styles featuring simple silhouettes, ruffles, and subtle cutouts.

From Dinah Shore's floral white dress in 1956 to Emilia Clarke's beige dress in 2016, we rounded up the best outfits celebrities have worn to the Emmys.

In 1956, Dinah Shore wore a white gown with a geometric floral pattern to the awards show.

The actress, who was best known for her eponymous show "The Dinah Shore Show," also wore white gloves that reached her elbow and small earrings.

In 1963, Annette Funicello wore a textured white gown and gloves that extended past her elbows to the Emmys.

The "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color" actress also wore '60s beauty hallmarks like winged eyeliner and voluminous hair.

In 1977, Lindsay Wagner wore a sequined black dress with asymmetrical straps.

The "Bionic Woman" actress styled her hair in natural-looking waves for a more laid-back look.

A professor came up with a proposal for Trump's border wall that's actually a line of burrito food carts

Today, around 700 miles of steel barriers and fences with barbed wire cover the 1,900-mile-long, US-Mexico border. By 2020, Donald Trump hopes to build a new structure there that would become a hallmark of his presidency: a "big, beautiful wall."

The US Department of Homeland Security put out an official call for wall designs earlier this year. And last week, it selected four construction companies to design 30-foot tall prototypes in San Diego, California.

It's uncertain exactly what the wall would look like, or even if the Trump administration can figure out how to pay for it. But the wall's purpose would be clear: in Trump's words, it would keep "bad hombres" out.

Trump's wall would also serve as a symbol of security and a way to further quarantine the US from Mexico, says Ronald Rael, an architecture professor at University of California, Berkeley who has studied the US southern border for over a decade.

In his new book, "Borderwall as Architecture," published by University of California Press this spring, he proposes alternative designs — not rooted in militarization — for the borderlands. The designs are influenced by how people have interacted there, ranging from friendly volleyball games to the exchange of burritos.

"It's about all the ways the wall has brought people together in really interesting ways as an act of resistance. And how those are designed scenarios," Rael told Business Insider. "They're events that took place because of the wall, and they change the space around that area. That's why I think it's important to smuggle design into the border lines, because they are in need of investment — not in the border wall, but investment in terms of social infrastructure: parks, schools, clean water, clean energy."

With "Borderwall," Rael explores how architects can encourage social and economic development on both sides of the wall. Below are a few of his designs.

The burrito wall

Food exchanges along the US-Mexico border inspired Rael's design for the "burrito wall," which calls for a see-through barrier with built-in food carts, grills, and seating for both sides. People would be able to buy, serve, and eat regional culinary favorites, like burritos and tacos.

He told BI that it's not unusual for people to casually buy and sell food along the border, even in surveilled areas, today.

"Casual exchanges are common across the border wall, ranging from small talk, long visits with family and friends, and commercial transactions of items ranging from food and jewelry to contraband," Rael wrote. " Even Border Patrol agents occasionally participate in this commerce, illegality notwithstanding."

The cactus wall

From 2004 to 2006, the Department of Homeland Security erected 30 miles of steel fencing through the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, a protected wilderness area that contained cactus species native to Arizona's southern border. As a result, a number of plants were lost from the construction as well as the increased movement of Border Patrol trucks, Rael said.

He proposes restoring the cacti by re-planting thousands of them along the border.

The library wall

This design calls for a binational library on the US-Mexico border, where people on both sides could read and rent books. The Haskell Free Library and Opera House, built on the US-Canada border in 1904, inspired it.

"The borderwall could be transformed into a border-bookshelf, encouraging dialogue and cultural exchange through the wall itself," Rael wrote.

The best men's hiking boots you can buy

$

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

hiking boots 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • When you're miles away from civilization, you rely on your gear, and no gear matters more than the boots on your feet. The Asolo TPS 520 GV hiking boots give you the support, water-resistance, and comfort you need to conquer any trail or mountain.

When I was sixteen years old, I travelled to Spain with a group of high school students to hike nearly two hundred miles of the venerable Camino de Santiago, a trek that traverses much of Northern Spain. While I'll never forget the laughs, the struggles, or stunning vistas, the memories of my feet are what left the most profound impression. Specifically, I mean the problems with my feet. I would not wish the plethora of savage blisters I developed on my worst enemy.

I had chosen what I thought was a decent pair of hiking boots before I set out for my Spanish odyssey, but in fact, I clearly selected a poor pair for my feet. I also probably didn't break the boots in nearly well enough. Despite the bloody mess my feet were in at the end of that trek, I went on to develop a profound love for hiking, mountaineering, and really for any outdoor activity. And you can bet I have never since bought or used a pair of boots I have not first researched well and tested thoroughly.

I've used that hard-earned knowledge to compile a guide to the best hiking boots, but first, here are some things to consider before you buy.

How to choose the right boots

Choosing the right hiking boots means first considering the environment in which you will primarily use them. Some boots are designed for use in snow and ice and are ideal when paired with crampons or spikes. Others are light and breathable and will keep your feet cool even in the heat of the desert. Some boots are ideal for jungle travel, repelling water while wicking sweat. The fact is that no one hiking boot is perfect for all conditions, so you should choose a boot that's best suited to the environments you frequent.

Pay attention to material, tread pattern, weight, and design elements like the height of the rise and the lacing system. Every aspect of a boot either contributes to or detracts from its suitability for a given environment or activity, and only through a thoughtful assessment of planned uses and a close study of the boot itself can you be sure to find a proper pair.

For the record, if you're a serious hiker, climber, or camper, you're going to want to own a few pairs of boots. This is especially true if the seasons vary greatly in your area or if you travel for your treks. Currently, I own four pairs, two of which I use the most often. I have been through seven or eight pairs over the years not counting the ones that shredded my feet back in Europe many years ago, so while I can't promise that one of these five pairs of hiking boots is the absolute best fit for you personally, I can guarantee they're all rugged, reliable footwear. Read on to see which of our top picks is best for you.

Although the Asolo TPS 520 GV Hiking Boots are our top pick, for the reasons laid out in the slides below, you should also consider the Columbia Daska Pass III Titanium Outdry Extreme Hiking Boots, the Salomon Men's Quest 4D 2 GTX Hiking Boots, the Timberland White Ledge Boots, and the Merrell Men's Moab Ventilator Mid Hiking Boots.

The best hiking boots overall

Why you'll love them: The Asolo TPS 520 GV hiking boots are comfortable the first time you slip them on, no break-in period required, and they hold up even after thousands of miles of trekking in all conditions.

If you're a committed hiker, camper, or mountaineer, you know that at the end of the day, your hiking boots are your most important pieces of gear, so you should be ready to pay a decent chunk for them. You could leave your tent, pack, sleeping pad, stove, and all the rest of it behind, but you need a solid pair of boots on your feet if you want to trek your way back out of the wilderness safely. If you want hiking boots that will be comfortable the first time you lace them up and that stay that way after tens of thousands of steps, slip your feet into the Asolo TPS 520 GVs.

With a rugged full-grain leather exterior and a waterproof, breathable Gore-Tex interior, the TPS 520s are ready for the elements, whether those elements include rain, rock, snow, mud, and more. The solid Vibram sole is treaded for ideal grip in a myriad of conditions and keeps your foot supported whether you're scrambling through a boulder field, kicking steps into a snowpack with crampons attached, or just strolling through a grassy field. The boots' sturdy uppers protect your ankles against injury even when you roll a foot over a loose rock or catch a toe on a pesky root.

Backpacker.com highlights the Asolo 520's durability and longevity, making it clear that these boots are worth their slightly elevated price tag. The review team also noted that nearly non-existent break-in time. Trailspace recommends these boots especially for use during winter treks thanks to their warmth and insulation.

I recommend them because even after trying out six or seven other brands over the past fifteen years, I always choose my Asolos for any serious hike. They've carried me up and down Mt. Whitney, Mt. Rainier, the Grand Teton, and through the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains in Colombia, just to name a few of their many outings.

But don't take it from me (or do, actually — I've logged thousands of miles in hiking boots!) when you can also read dozens of glowing reviews on Amazon, most of which are accompanied by 5-star ratings. Overall, the Asolo TPS 520 GVs have a 4.5-star status, with most buyers celebrating the fact that their Asolos last for years and years even with regular use in all sorts of conditions.

Pros: Instant comfort without break-in wearing, stellar water-resistance, great ankle and arch support, wicks moisture away from foot, easy and secure lacing system

Cons: Heavier and bulkier than many other hiking boot options, rather expensive

Buy the Asolo TPS 520 GV hiking boots on Amazon for around $240 (prices vary by size)

The best hiking boots for winter

Why you'll love them: Unless you plunge them into water that's deeper than their rise, the Columbia Daska Pass III Titanium Outdry Extreme boots simply won't let your feet get wet.

When the Columbia Sportswear Company released began to release gear and apparel stamped with its OutDry Extreme certification a few years back, it changed the game for outdoor clothing. Simply put, if you see the OutDry label on a piece of apparel, you can count on that item to be 100% waterproof.

You can trust me on this: I have worn various pieces of OutDry gear in downpours in the middle of a South American rainforest, in knee deep snow in the northeast of the United States (these exact boots!), and in many places in between. Also note the word Titanium in there: That's the top-of-the-line stuff this world-renowned apparel brand makes. If you need to rely on a pair of boots to keep your feet dry and supported in wet or wintry weather, these are a safe bet.

The Daska Pass III boots are impressively lightweight for footwear that offers such superlative waterproofing, not to mention impressive insulation. Paired with the right socks, these boots will keep your feet warm even in conditions well below the freezing point. And their tall, sturdy uppers keep your ankles safe from a sprain (or worse) even when you're trekking across unstable terrain, like a shell of ice frozen over looser snow, for example.

The boots have an outsole made from durable Vibram rubber and a poured polyurethane midsole that offers you some extra bounce in your step, almost like you might get from a running shoe. It's not quite the same level of rebound, but better than nothing!

Columbia's Daska Pass III boots are at a decent price point, especially considering their durability. While in many conditions, the aforementioned insulation is a great asset, it's also the main drawback of these boots. They are just too warm for use in some places and seasons. If you wear these boots on a low elevation summer trek, your feet are going to sweat so much the waterproofing won't matter.

If you browse the web in search of user comments about and ratings of the Columbia Daska Pass III Titanium Outdry Extreme Hiking Boots, you'll hardly ever find anything but glowing reviews and four- or five-star ratings. One reviewer stated: "I am a guide in Alaska. These are the only boots I own. They have been great for every activity I engage in." Another summed up his sentiments saying: "If you live in a relatively moderate and wet climate, this boot is probably your best [bet]."

If you prefer to hear from the professionals, a Backpacker.com reviewer praised the Daska Pass III's ability to "shed water like a duck," calling them a superlative waterproof boot.

Pros: Amazing waterproof rating, cannot be inundated even by standing in water, great insulation, ideal for use in cold weather

Cons: Too warm for use in hot climates and/or seasons

Buy the Columbia Daska Pass III Titanium Outdry Extreme Hiking Boots on Amazon for $163 and up (prices vary by size)

The best hiking boots for any conditions

Why you'll love them: If you need one pair of hiking boots that will perform adroitly in the winter snow, the springtime mud, the summer's heat, or the frost of fall, then you should slip on a pair of versatile Salomon Quest 4D 2 GTX hiking boots.

As I said earlier and will repeat emphatically whenever it wouldn't be awkward to do so, no one hiking boot is ever going to be ideal for use in all types of conditions. But if you need to find the best possible compromise boot, whether for budgetary concerns or because you need to travel through various types of weather and terrain in a single expedition, the Salomon Quest 4D 2 GTX hiking boots are a fine choice.

The exterior of the boots features a blend of leather and textile, with Gore-Tex waterproofing underlying both materials. The six-inch shaft rises more than high enough to protect an ankle against a roll, while the thick rubber toecap protects your toes against a falling rock or a hard stub against a stone, log, step, or anything else.

Now here are the compromises: The tread pattern is not aggressive; it's more akin to a trail shoe than a rugged boot suitable for the loose scree of a mountain pass. But you will often be on graded trails. The exterior is water-resistant, yes, but it will eventually soak through if you stand in puddles or streams. So ... don't do that. And while they might not be as warm as some boots, they are suitable for all seasons when paired with the right socks, as they let your foot breathe and stay cool when you wear thinner socks.

Amazon reviews for these boots number well over 1,600 at the time of this writing, with most people assigning five stars (80%) and with a chunk of four-star reviews as well (11%, and you can do the rest of the math). The current top review is from a hiker who wore these boots along hundreds of miles of the Appalachian Trail and sang their praises when the trek was done.

As for an expert opinion, a Backcountry Edge video review calls them perfect for the "stability and support" you need in a boot that won't "weigh you down." The SwitchbackTravel.com review also praises the light weight of the boot, noting the protection offered by its tall upper, a rarity for boots that are so light.

Pros: Versatile enough for use in many conditions, lightweight with flexible sole, breathable materials keep foot cool

Cons: Thin underfoot padding leads to foot fatigue, tread pattern not ideal for some conditions

Buy the Salomon Men's Quest 4D 2 GTX Hiking Boot on Amazon for around $175 (prices vary by size)
