The 10 most expensive celebrity divorces

0
0

angelina jolie brad pitt

When a celebrity couple calls it quits there's more than broken hearts on the line. There's also a lot of money at stake. And if there's no prenup involved for A-list stars, it can get pricey.

Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt in fall of 2016 and it's not clear how the two will split their assets yet.

The two have earned $555 million since they have been together, according to Forbes, as well as $117.5 million (before taxes and fees) since their 2014 marriage. Jolie is seeking physical custody of their six children while Pitt reportedly wants to share joint custody. The two also have a lot of property at stake

But when all is said and done, their divorce probably won't compare to some of the most expensive in history. Steven Spielberg, Michael Jordan, and Mel Gibson have all had divorce settlements that have reportedly crossed $100 million. There's even one that has topped $1 billion.

Keep reading to see the most expensive celebrity divorce settlements.

SEE ALSO: These are the 10 highest-paid actors in the world

10. Kevin Costner and Cindy Silva

Settlement:Reported $80 million

What went wrong: According to People, Costner reportedly had a wandering eye and Silva wasn't a fan of his "sexy roles" and she meade an ultimatum to stop doing them or quit the movie business.

Costner and Silva met at California State University in 1975 and married two and a half years later. They announced their divorce after 16 years of marriage in 1994.

"We have amicably resolved all issues regarding our children and financial affairs and a full marital settlement has been reached," Costner and Silva said in a statement.

During that time, Costner starred in hits "Dances with Wolves" and "The Bodyguard."

9. Madonna and Guy Ritchie

Settlement: $76 million to $92 million

What went wrong: The director and singer called it quits in 2008 after being married for just under eight years.

In 2011, Ritchie opened up about the divorce in "Details" magazine saying he felt he stepped into a soap opera but that he didn’t regret his time with the singer. Madonna later told Newsweek that the spark gave out in their relationship.

"It’s not as romantic as it used to be. You think, 'This isn’t what I thought it was going to be,' and 'How much am I willing to sacrifice?'" Madonna said.

Madonna's publicist told the Associated Press the divorce settlement would be at least $76 million.

8. Harrison Ford and Melissa Mathison

Settlement: Between $85 million and $118 million

What went wrong: Harrison Ford and screenwriter Melissa Mathison were together for 17 years. They first met on the set of "Apocalypse Now" in 1979.

The pair separated in 2000 amid reports he was seeing a younger woman

"We have been living apart for the past month,” the couple said in a statement released November 2000. "We sincerely hope that we can work out our differences."

They divorced three years later. Mathison died in 2015.

9 hotels and clubs in Trump's real-estate portfolio that could be under water in 80 years

President Donald Trump has more reasons than one to keep a careful eye on Florida.

The president has a handful of real-estate holdings along the state's coast. This weekend, Trump hotels and clubs could be battered by Hurricane Irma, already one of the most powerful storms on record.

The link between climate change and this year's catastrophic hurricane activity is uncertain, but scientists say the rising temperature of ocean water makes storms stronger. Climate change is also responsible for sea-level rise, which could cause powerful storm surges and flooding that one day devastates some of Trump's real-estate holdings in the US.

In January, areport from theNational Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency hinted at the possibility of an "extreme" sea-level rise scenario that would put some American landmarks, towns, and cities underwater within the century. That scenario is considered unlikely, but possible.

Research group Climate Central took the projections laid out in NOAA's report and created a plug-in for Google Earth that shows how catastrophic the damage would be if the flooding happened today. You can install it (directions here) and see anywhere in the US.

Here's what nine hotels and clubs owned by Trump might look like in the year 2100.

President Trump has often said that climate change isn't real. He's wrong.

In a worst case scenario, flooding caused by polar melting and ice-sheet collapses could cause a sea level rise of 10 to 12 feet by 2100, NOAA reported in January.

Trump built the Taj Mahal casino for $1.2 billion in 1990. It overlooks the beaches of Atlantic City, New Jersey, and has been described by Trump as the "eighth wonder of the world."

In 2017, Trump sold the hotel for 4 cents on the dollar.

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you’ll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

Screen Shot 2017 09 07 at 11.24.25 AMAs much of a fashion statement watches can be, a dead watch is no good.

Rather than having to continuously replace the battery in your timepiece, buying an automatic watch can save you the hassle of dealing with a watch that doesn't work.

Automatic watches are powered by the movement of your wrist. As long as you wear it, it will keep ticking. And if you go long enough without wearing it and the reserve power runs out, simply put it back on and fix the time. No more taking your watch to a jeweler for an expensive battery.

Generally, automatic watches cost a bit more than traditional quartz options, but spending the extra money is well worth it.

With a budget of $500, you can get a high-quality automatic movement watch from brands like Hamilton, Seiko, Tissot, and Invicta.

If you're in the market for a watch that's just as functional as it is stylish, an automatic watch is for you.

Shop all automatic watches at Jomashop now.

If you're considering dropping money on a luxury watch, as with any other major purchase, be sure to compare prices and do some research first. All of the watches are guaranteed to be 100% authentic, but they do not come with a manufacturers warranty. If you have any concerns at all, you can view Jomashop's full warranty policy here.

Hamilton Khaki King Scuba Automatic Watch

Every Stephen King movie, ranked from worst to best

0
0

the shining

Stephen King’s work has been adapted so many times — sometimes by King himself — that it’s impossible to find a single unifying thread in all of the film adaptations.

Sure, a lot of them are horror (certainly a lot of the worst are horror), but that’s largely because the boom period for King movies was the 1980s, when he was known solely as a horror writer. As his canvas (and reputation) has expanded over the years, his work has been turned into dramas, comedies, musicals, and even a Bollywood movie.

Because of this dissonance, ranking King movies is particularly difficult: The Mangler and The Shawshank Redemption barely seem to exist on the same plane of dimensional existence, let alone on the same list of movies.

But nonetheless, with the latest King adaptation, It, opening this week, we gave it the old college try. (For the purposes of this list, we looked at theatrical releases only, and excluded Lawnmower Man, an “adaptation” so vastly different from the original that King sued to get his name off it.) With one notable exception, you’ll find the adapted movies turned out much like King himself: They got more serious and substantial with age.

SEE ALSO: Stephen King 'was not prepared' for how good the 'It' movie is

SEE ALSO: 15 movies and TV shows you didn't know were Stephen King adaptations

40. "Maximum Overdrive" (1986)

The one movie King ever directed, and … well, you know, Stephen King is a wonderful writer who should probably stick with writing. The movie’s tone is set in the opening scene, in which a man (played by King) tries to take money out of an ATM, and the ATM calls him an asshole. Apparently, a comet has passed by Earth and given mechanical objects sentience, and once they attack humanity, Emilio Estevez helps lead a human resistance.

The movie isn’t even absurd enough to have fun with this lunatic premise, and King has zero skills as a director — visually, narratively, or in any other sense. King has called it the worst adaptation of any of his works, and we are not about to disagree. Though, according to King: “I was coked out of my mind all through its production, and I really didn’t know what I was doing.”

39. "The Mangler" (1995)

Of all the Stephen King adaptations, we must confess that this one has our favorite title. Boy, though, is this thing ridiculous. What, exactly, is “the Mangler,” you ask? Well, the Mangler is a demonically possessed … laundry press! This setup leads to hilarious scenes of an angry laundry press pressing up and down, like a hungry, hungry hippo.

Eventually the Mangler develops legs and starts chasing people. It’s all terrible, but, you never know, it might be your thing. Maybe you’re into laundry-press cosplay. You do you.

38. "Graveyard Shift" (1990)

Graveyard Shift is as schlocky as low-budget horror films get. Its premise: Overnight workers at an abandoned-then-reopened textile mill keep dying, and no one can figure out why. Wanna guess why? We don’t want to give it away. All right, they’re being killed by … a giant bat! Because bats hunt at night, you see. (In the short story, it’s a giant rat. Bats are much more cinematic.) This movie looks like it was made for about $35, but it does feature a truly insane closing credits song.

Teachers share 23 things they'd love to tell their students but can't

To maintain order in the classroom — and to keep their jobs — there are some things teachers just can't tell their students, even if they want to.

But some of these things, while perhaps controversial, could end up being a service to young people, if only someone would just tell them.

So we asked teachers everywhere to weigh in on the one thing they'd love to tell their students but can't, and more than 50 teachers shared their insights.

We've (anonymously) included some of the most constructive thoughts here:

SEE ALSO: 23 teachers share the weirdest thing they've ever experienced on the job

'Really, all this stuff you learn is probably not that important'

"What is important is the life skills you learn while completing the tasks in class.

"You learn how to argue effectively and communicate with different types of people. You learn how to listen to others and respond respectfully. You learn so much that you don't even realize because it seems disguised by homework and essays. But really, you are learning to be independent adults more than you know."

'Don't waste this opportunity'

"Please just know that I love teaching and I sincerely want to help you. But I can't help you if you don't put in the effort. I chose this job because I'm passionate and hardworking and I know my s---, and I will help you get to where you need to be. But you need to meet me halfway.

"It's so frustrating because education opens so many doors, and people around the world would kill to have this educational opportunity. Malala was shot in the freaking head for it. And you're just throwing it all away, and that makes me want to tear my hair out."

'You are not your test scores'

"All the standardized testing we do is so insignificant to who you will become."

In 1995 the NFL unveiled some bizarre mascots that were never seen again

Minnesota Vikings

The NFL's Pro Bowl game rarely produces notable moments and is often just a glorified version of a touch football game.

However, a look back at the 1995 Pro Bowl unveiled something interesting. Many teams used new, bizarre mascots, and most of the mascots were never seen again.

The characters were originally introduced as a short-lived NFL merchandising effort called "Team NFL Heroes." You can read more about that project at Uni-Watch, and you can see an example for sale on eBay.

It's unclear if every team had a mascot made for this Pro Bowl, but there are several for teams that don't traditionally use a mascot during games, and at least one of the mascots is still used today.

A spokesperson for the NFL was unsure why the mascots were made or why they were only used once.

Check out the mascots below.

This story has been updated from its original version.

The Atlanta Falcons mascot had an absurdly long neck.

The New Orleans Saints mascot looked like a mix between Snuffleupagus from "Sesame Street" and Rowlf the Dog from "The Muppets."

[Update] This photo was originally identified as being the mascot for the Cleveland Browns. According to the new information provided by Uni-Watch.com, this is a dog and it is a mascot for the Saints.

This was the last game for the original Los Angeles Rams as the team moved to St. Louis the next season.

Here's how to use Zello, the walkie-talkie app people are downloading ahead of Hurricane Irma

hurricane irma

As Hurricane Irma rips through the Caribbean and heads toward Florida, a free smartphone app is emerging as an important tool for search and rescue.

Called Zello, the app lets you use your phone as a walkie-talkie or two-way radio as long as you have a network or Wi-Fi connection. Users can join channels and instantly send voice messages or photos, and the app even works over older, 2G networks.

Zello is currently at the top of the App Store's free apps chart, and downloads of the app have spiked twice in the last week. The jumped during Hurricane Harvey and again on Wednesday as Irma became a Category 5 hurricane.

The app's popularity may have been influenced by viral Facebook and Twitter posts that said it will still work even without cell service, the Washington Post reported. But those posts were incorrect — if cell towers are wiped out in the storm and Wi-Fi goes down, the app will not work.

But if you do have cell service — even a 2G or 3G connection — the app could help in the event of an emergency. Here's how it works.

SEE ALSO: Here are all the areas in Hurricane Irma's path and when the storm could arrive

Zello is free to use and doesn't have ads. In order to start using the app, though, you'll need to make an account.

You can provide as much or as little information as you'd like, including a photo, description, and voice greeting.

Zello takes a no-frills approach to its interface. By clicking the menu button, you can check your volume level, change your status, view your contacts, and see available channels.

beltsBelts are usually hidden under your shirt, with just one purpose — to hold your pants up.

But when a T-shirt doesn't cut it, and it's time to get ready for the office, they quickly become multi-functional. When dressing professionally, belts are just as important as other accessories like neckties and can become a part of your overall style.

Just like shoes, no single belt will fit with all outfits, so it's important to have a selection to choose from. Whether you're searching for one that's subtle, goes with your wardrobe, or makes a statement, each look can be achieved with this one accessory.

From staples like brown and black leather to more colorful rope options, the choices below will keep your wardrobe ready for any occasion.

The brown belt.

The brown leather belt is a staple piece. Whether you're wearing a suit or a pair of jeans, it'll go well with your brown shoes.

The black belt.

Just like the previous option, a black leather belt is necessary when wearing black shoes. This color choice is perfect when going for a blacked out look with a tuxedo.

The tan belt.

While just as functional, the tan leather belt shouldn't be your primary choice. It stands out a bit more than brown, so it's great when you're going for a casual look like a button-up shirt and jeans. Also, if you're wearing tan shoes, you'll want to keep the color consistent with your belt choice.

12 American towns that look exactly like places in Europe

0

Leavenworth Washington 2

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Some towns in the US look like they belong in Europe.
  • Many of these towns were originally settled by European immigrants.
  • Examples include Solvang, California, St. Augustine, Florida, and Pella, Iowa.

Europe offers countless charming towns and attractions for visitors to explore.

But traveling costs money — especially if you get hit with foreign transaction fees— and sometimes you just don't have the funds or the time to make it across the pond.

Fortunately, several US states have their own slice of Europe.

From Frankenmuth, Michigan, to Tarpon Springs, Florida, here are 12 American towns that will make you feel like  you're on a different continent.

Solvang, California

Danish settlers established Solvang in the early 1900s in an effort to move away from the chilly winters of the Midwest, where they had originally settled. The name actually means "sunny fields" in Danish.

Located in the Santa Ynez Valley, the town is home to a windmill, Danish architecture, and plenty of bakeries, restaurants, and museums that reflect Danish culture. There's a replica of Copenhagen's famous Little Mermaid statue as well as the city's Round Tower.

St. Augustine, Florida

St. Augustine bears the impressive title of the oldest city in the US. Founded in 1565 by Spanish settlers, the city is filled with authentic Spanish colonial architecture as well as beautifully-manicured gardens and fountains.

Vail, Colorado

Vail sits at the base of Vail Mountain, just like Zermatt — the Swiss town it's inspired by — sits at the base of the Matterhorn.

Many of the hotels and restaurants that dot the luxe resort town have the impressive woodworking that's found on many Swiss chalets.

11 stylish power dresses to wear to work

of mercer dress

For professional women, dressing for work used to mean trying to fit in with the guys by wearing modest, very formal, and just plain boring uniforms. This mindset still exists in certain industries, which is perhaps why my old roommate once said she never wants to work in an office cubicle, or worse, be forced to come to work in a suit.

Now in most industries, however, the standards and rules have loosened to usher in bright jewel tones, soft pastels, unique hemlines, and eye-catching silhouettes. When a woman looks and feels good in what she wears, that confidence shows and makes a world of difference when she's pitching, strategizing, and solving problems in the workplace.

That's why I see fashion as a source of power rather than distraction. The following power dresses make getting dressed for work and channeling your confidence easy, so you can simply throw on a dress in the morning and go get stuff done.

Dressing for work doesn't have to be boring, shapeless, or time-consuming thanks to these 11 power dresses.

22 celebrities you didn't know were star athletes

Some Hollywood stars have a knack for sports.

Terry Crews played for the National Football League (NFL) before establishing himself as a comedic actor and "Orange is the New Black" star Uzo Aduba was a top sprinter at her university.

While some celebrities stuck to sports in high school, others went on to play in college and beyond.

Here are 22 celebrities who you might now know played sports:

Uzo Aduba was one of the top sprinters at Boston University.

Now known for "Orange is the New Black," the actress was on her college's track team. She was close to breaking a record in the 55-meter race with her 7.07 seconds against the top 7.03. She also ran the 100-meter and 200-meter races.

Aduba still likes to run. She ran the New York City Marathon in 2013 and the Boston Marathon in 2015.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was a wrestler before he started acting, but even before that, he was a football player.

Johnson accepted a full scholarship to play for the University of Miami Hurricanes. He was on the 1991 team that won a national championship.

An injury eventually hurt his college career and when the NFL didn't come calling, he joined the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League. He was cut two months into it, but then went on to be an award-winning wrestler and was Forbes' highest-paid actor in 2016.

Terry Crews played football in the NFL.

Crews is hilarious on "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," but in his younger years, his life was dominated by football.

He attended Western Michigan University on a full football scholarship before being drafted by the Los Angeles Rams. He also had stints with the San Diego Chargers and Washington Redskins before becoming the funny actor we know and love today.

Wall street traders panic

Business is up on Wall Street, but not nearly enough to start popping bottles.

Investment banking revenues at the top-12 banks hit $82 billion during the first half of 2017, according to data from industry consultant Coalition.

That's a 4% increase from last year, but still a yawning gap from the performance of 2012 to 2015, when first-half sales never dipped below $91.5 billion.

And while first-half performance so far is beating 2016, that's mostly thanks to a strong first quarter. Second-quarter revenues were ugly, coming in at $39.5 billion, or 5% less than the year prior.

The data includes revenues for: Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Barclays, BNP Paribas, Citigroup, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, HSBC, JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, Societe Generale, and UBS.

Here's the full breakdown:

Wall Street revenues so far have eclipsed the torpid pace set in 2016, thanks to a 19% gain on the investment banking side. Equities performance lagged though.

The second-quarter, however, saw a 5% dip from 2016 thanks to a steep drop off in fixed income revenue.

Overall, fixed income revenues were up slightly in the first half, hitting $38.5 billion. The division had been on a steady decline since 2012. Commodities hit $1.3 billion, the lowest level since 2006 thanks to continued struggles in energy and natural gas.

Wall Street Money Never Sleeps Shia

Internship season has wrapped up on Wall Street, and young financiers have headed back to school with all the new skills and knowledge they picked up over the summer.

Of course, banks can also learn a thing or two from the young people they hire for a summer.

Goldman Sachs on Thursday released the firm's second annual survey of its global summer intern class. 69% of the firm's 2,500 summer analysts responded to the survey, according to a spokeswoman with the firm. They hail from across the Americas, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, and are typically 20 or 21 years old and about to begin their senior year of college.

The firm picked their brains on everything from how they keep up with the news to how they manage their spending habits to their favorite social media apps.

You can see the responses below:

21 key predictions we have for the final season of 'Game of Thrones'

Jon Snow Daenerys Targaryen Game of Thrones side by side

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Game of Thrones" season seven.

The "Game of Thrones" season seven finale left us with a lot of unanswered questions, but more importantly we were left wondering how this fantasy epic will come to an end. The eighth and final season of "Game of Thrones" might not air until 2019, so in the meantime let's take a guess at how this fantasy epic will tie up its major loose ends.

Keep reading for a look at our predictions for the final season of "Game of Thrones," including our devastating guess that Daenerys Targaryen won't survive until the end.

Daenerys and Jon will arrive in Winterfell, along with the rest of Team Targaryen.

Daenerys and Jon are on a boat heading for White Harbor, where they'll land and then head to Winterfell. Given that the Night King just broke down the Wall, we can't see the showrunners dillydallying when it comes to getting Jon and Daenerys (and their armies) prepared for the big showdown.

Team Daenerys will arrive at Winterfell in time to hear the news about the Night King's imminent march on the north.

With their arrival, a series of new reunions will take place. Most importantly: Jon and Arya.

We had been hoping for a Jon/Arya reunion on season seven, but the two cousins (who think they're half-siblings) just missed each other.

This is one meeting that has to happen in the eighth and final season. Jon and Arya were very close growing up. Jon was the one who had Needle made for Arya as a goodbye present. It's only fitting for them to see each other again before the Great War begins.

Jon and Sam will also reunite for the first time since Jon was assassinated.

Sam must know Jon was killed and subsequently resurrected, since he was sending ravens to him at Winterfell, but we haven't seen these two together since season five. Sam will likely be a part of the Rhaegar and Lyanna reveal to Jon, since Bran isn't exactly the best with delicately handling emotional conversations these days.

Facebook is a classic Silicon Valley success story: It's gone from an idea hatched in a Harvard dorm to one of the most powerful and influential companies in the world.

It's made Mark Zuckerberg into a legendary figure and turned a hoodie and tennis shoes into the height of tech industry fashion.

These days, Facebook is worth around $500 billion, and more than 2 billion people use its social network every month.

Here's the story behind Facebook's insane rise from February 2004 through today.

Spoiler alert: It involves a lot of beer.

Facebook got its start at Harvard's Kirkland House dormitory.

That's the same dorm where Wallace Shawn, who played Vizzini in "The Princess Bride" and the voice of "Toy Story's" Rex, lived during his Harvard years.

In 2003, Mark Zuckerberg, then a sophomore at Harvard, built a website called Facemash.

"Facemash" was a Hot or Not-style site. Zuckerberg used pictures of his classmates that he hacked from the school administration's dormitory ID files. The site got 22,000 page views from 450 people in the first four hours it was up.

A few days later, Harvard ordered it to be taken down, citing copyright and security concerns. Zuckerberg faced disciplinary action from Harvard but was allowed to stay at the school.

Undeterred by the Facemash debacle, Zuckerberg launched "Thefacebook" on February 4, 2004.
