NFL QB POWER RANKINGS: Where all 32 starting QBs stand heading into Week 3

$
0
0

Alex Smith

Using a loose formula, we ranked all 32 NFL starting quarterbacks.

The formula incorporates two different advanced stats: Football Outsiders' DYAR metric and ESPN's total QBR metric. Other factors like long-term outlook, game management and job security were also taken into consideration.

While Alex Smith and Sam Bradford have turned in excellent performances since the last installment of these rankings, others have experienced big falls. Below, check out our ranking of all 32 starters.

32. Brian Hoyer, San Francisco 49ers

Preseason ranking: 27

Record as starter: 0-2

DYAR rank: 31

QBR rank: 31

One thing to know: Hoyer's early struggles have left some 49ers fans calling for rookie backup C.J. Beathard to take his place under center.

31. Jacoby Brissett, Indianapolis Colts

Preseason ranking: N/A (replaced Andrew Luck, No. 14)

Record as starter: 0-1

DYAR rank: 25

QBR rank: 28

One thing to know: Acquired just days before the start of the regular season, Brissett had a rough outing against the Cardinals on Sunday. This week's matchup against the Browns will provide an excellent chance for him to show what he can really do.

30. DeShone Kizer, Cleveland Browns

Preseason ranking: 30

Record as starter: 0-2

DYAR rank: 30

QBR rank: 30

One thing to know: Kizer missed part of Sunday's game due to a migraine and was dreadful when he did play, throwing three interceptions. Given his decent Week 1 performance, he seems due for improvement this week, but fans should temper their expectations.

A few weeks after I moved into my apartment in Brooklyn, I gave video tours of the space to my groups of friends back home. Someone always inevitably noticed our dining table. "Hey that table's from IKEA, isn't it?" they would say.

I get the implication: The home goods in my apartment are virtually indistinguishable from any other young working professional's. I would love to come home to an apartment with nice, luxurious goods, but I shop at the big retailers because high-end boutiques, while great for beautiful inspiration, aren't so friendly on the wallet.

Rachel Cohen and Andrés Modak were two recent Wharton MBA grads who moved to New York. They, too, struggled to make their apartment their own with unique, inexpensive home goods. Shopping at traditional retailers was also overwhelming and confusing — a classic example of the paradox of choice, when more options actually paralyze decision-making.

This experience led to an idea: creating an exceptional home can be refreshingly simple.

Cohen and Modak started Snowe in 2015, which offers simple and accessible luxury goods that bring a little something extra to your home, whether you're hosting a dinner party or just carrying about your daily activities. Unlike our parents' generation, who brought out the coveted dinnerware and drinkware only once or twice a year for special occasions, the cofounders believe in the power of everyday luxury.

In an interview with Bond Street, they said, "We believe your nicest products should be used on a daily basis. That glass of wine at the end of the day, that cup of coffee you have in the morning. You want those small moments to feel luxurious." It's like the feeling of wearing a really nice but simple piece of jewelry. It makes a difference in how you carry yourself, and you actually care for that gold ring or necklace instead of throwing it around like the piece of jewelry you could've gotten anywhere.

Cohen and Modak didn't want to settle when it came to building their home, and you don't have to either.

Learn more about Snowe and why it's a favorite among millennial home shoppers, below.

As you browse products and images, you'll notice that Snowe's aesthetic is clean and pleasant to look at.

It gives you a taste of the look and feeling you can bring to your own home. Since all of Snowe's products come in neutral colors, they're easy to incorporate into your dining room, bedroom, and bathroom setups.

The quality of design and craftsmanship is apparent, but the prices are actually reasonable.

Snowe's dinnerware is made from lightweight but durable porcelain and is oven-, microwave- and dishwasher-safe. You can grab an 18-piece Dine and Serve Set, which includes plates, bowls, and serving platters, for $295. Its dishwasher-safe glassware is made from lead-free crystallized glass, and individual pieces cost $12 to $15

For the bedroom, Snowe offers crisp yet breathable percale and sateen sheets, duvet covers, and shams, as well as down pillows for $38 to $228.

Its soft and quick-drying towels are made with 100% long-staple cotton and cost $8 to $48 per piece.

9 surprising differences between Disneyland and Disney World

$

mickey minnie disney world

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Disneyland and Disney World may seem similar, but there are several major differences.
  • Disneyland is older and smaller in size than Disney World.
  • There are also many rides that are exclusive to each park.

While at first glance, Disneyland and Disney World might look like they are the same theme park, just on different coasts, they're very different. Read on to find out what makes Disneyland "The Happiest Place on Earth," while Disney World is "The Most Magical."

Size matters

In total, there are four theme parks and two water parks in Walt Disney World in Orlando (EPCOT, Disney's Animal Kingdom, and Disney's Hollywood Studios, along with various yachting, beach, and golf resorts), while Disneyland in Anaheim, California, has only two theme parks and no water parks available. While that may automatically make you think WDW is better, you may find Disneyland more manageable, especially if you're traveling with little kids. Check out these other insider secrets for the best Walt Disney World vacation.

Disneyland is older

The Disney theme park in Anaheim, one of our picks for best family travel destinations, opened in 1955, while the Orlando theme park opened 16 years later in 1971. WDW benefited from Walt Disney's hindsight; Disney hated that the area around Disneyland was overrun with other non-Disney hotels and theme parks, because he felt that it "broke the illusion." To prevent this in Orlando, he bought as much land as he could in Central Florida because he wanted a bigger theme park to accommodate more guests and expand in size, if necessary. By comparison, the Disney theme park in Anaheim takes up about 510 acres of land, while the park in Orlando rests on about 30,000 acres.

Different thrills

While both parks share the same "lands" (Tomorrowland, Fantasyland, Frontierland, etc.), each theme park has rides that are exclusive to their respective parks. At Disneyland, these include Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, Matterhorn Bobsleds, Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage, Mickey's Fun Wheel, and Radiator Springs Racers; while at WDW you'll find Pandora the World of Avatar, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Spaceship Earth, Mission: SPACE, Test Track, Kilimanjaro Safaris, and more.

Congestion is getting worse every year in the United States.

In fact, the average US commuter spends 42 hours stuck in traffic a year, according to a report by the Texas Transportation Institute. Congestion is also a big reason why auto and tech companies are pouring money into everything from car-sharing to autonomous driving.

TomTom, a navigation and mapping company, ranked US cities that have the most traffic congestion in its 2017 Traffic Index.

After collecting data over a nine-year time span, TomTom measured the extra travel time experienced by drivers over an entire year. TomTom assessed 189 cities overall and gave each a congestion score out of 100. Each percentage represents how much extra travel time it took on average to make any trip, anywhere in the city.

Here are the most congested cities in the US:

13. Baton Rouge received a score of 26%, meaning it took commuters 26% more time to travel anywhere in the city. This was a 3% increase from 2016.

12. Atlanta edged ahead of Baton Rouge with a score of 27%, also a 3% increase from the year prior.

11. San Diego had the same exact traffic score as Atlanta at 27%, also a 3% increase from 2016.

The founder of 'blue collar LinkedIn' shares his best advice for succeeding without a bachelor’s degree

$
0
0

Fred Goff Jobcase

Success doesn't require a bachelor's degree.

But, with automation on the rise, it can feel like the chips are stacked against workers without one.

Fred Goff, founder and CEO of blue-collar-friendly job site Jobcase, told Business Insider that it is possible to achieve success in the future without a bachelor's degree — you just have to know how.

Here are three of his best tips:

SEE ALSO: Robots are coming for our jobs — here’s why the founder of 'blue collar LinkedIn' isn't worried

DON'T MISS: The 25 highest-paying jobs you can get without a bachelor's degree

1. Find a way to showcase your experience from job to job

Goff said job hopping is one potential pitfall in the blue collar job market.

"If you look at your grandfather or mine, mine happened to push the broom in the factory when he was a teenager," Goff said. "He ended up running the factory when he was 50. Every time he moved jobs, there's like an employee jacket saying, 'Oh, he proved himself doing this' so he moves up."

Today, Goff said most workers end up switching companies more often, but lack the ability to demonstrate the experience or skills they had built up in previous roles.

"Every time you move, you have to reprove yourself," he said.

So it's especially crucial for blue collar workers to find a way to accumulate and leverage previous recommendations and praise.

2. Build your network

Goff said he intended Jobcase to be an "inside out" Facebook. He said blue collar workers attempting to switch industries or learn a new skill typically need connections beyond their friends and family.

"The reality is that you need help and connections from people you don't know," he said. "You need connections from someone in Portland, Oregon, who's a cosmetologist, you need someone who's working in a hospital in Chicago that used to work in a warehouse to put themselves through school."

Beyond networking opportunities, it's important to build a support squad for your career.

Finding people who are empathetic and supportive of you and your goals can really bolster even the most frustrating job search. Goff said he is always heartened to see people encouraging one another on Jobcase.

3. Brace yourself for change

Automation is on the rise. Over the years, changes in technology will only continue to impact the blue collar job market.

"You don't have to have a college degree to get the sense that the future is unpredictable," he said. "You don't have to have a college degree to get the sense that income inequality is growing."

That's no reason to panic, but it's important to make yourself aware of changing trends within your industry, Goff told Business Insider.

"Honestly, I think we could have been having a similar conversation in principle using different words 100 years ago," he said. A lot of times we fool ourselves, thinking these are new things. There's nothing new under the sun."

Your most surprising character trait, according to your zodiac sign

$
0
0

happyThe INSIDER Summary:

  • Your zodiac sign can say a lot about your personality.
  • Depending on your sign, you could be generous or maybe even anxious.
  • Here's what your zodiac sign says about your character.

If you’re anything like us (which, obvi), then you’re kind of obsessed with all things astrology. Whether it’s decoding your natal chart, digging into your rising sign, or getting your aura read, the zodiac (and all things other-worldly) certainly holds a special place in our collective cosmic hearts. And with all this, uh, research we’ve done recently, we’re feeling pretty confident in our understanding of our sun signs — but are always on the hunt for more info. Which is exactly why we’ve put together this list of lesser-known astrological traits to help you round out your astrological personality.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 18)

Sensitivity: While it’s usually your Cancerian friends who get the sensitive label, you’re actually quite the emotional sign yourself, Aquarius. You’re individualistic (and a little rebellious), of course, but your expressive, idealistic nature lends itself to your being seriously in touch with your inner self. You’re always after what’s authentic, which is often an emotional journey to make yourself a better person.

Pisces (February 19 – March 20)

Friendliness: Spiritual, sure, but friendly? Pisces, you’re friendly AF. That empathetic quality you have translates seamlessly into an ability to get along with everyone, totally tuning into a person’s vibe to make them feel heard and valued. You can turn on the charm at a party or spend hours one-on-one, and you’re a social chameleon with a compassionate streak a mile long.

Aries (March 21 - April 19)

Flirtatiousness: Sure, Aries are all about that independent spirit, forever harnessing your fearlessness to push yourself forward, often paying little attention to those left in your wake. But your characteristic bravery can be put to other, more fun uses as well — namely, flirting your face off. Ruled by Mars, the planet of action, you have that bold, adventurous spirit that means you can charm just about any cutie you see. Even though you’re totally fine on your own, thanks much, you crave dynamic social interaction and get a kick out of chatting up your airplane seatmate, bar neighbor, or (and?) local barista.

8 tips for a successful marriage, according to divorce lawyers

$
0

couple friends womenThe INSIDER Summary:

  • We all know marriage involves a lot of commitment.
  • But there's more we can learn, especially from those who have seen couples struggle and ultimately fail.
  • From voicing your needs to learning how to work as a team, divorce lawyers dish out their best marriage advice.

Word on the street is that
we millennials are pretty awesome at marriage. Our tendency to wait longer than our predecessors to tie the knot — along with our generally more deliberate approach to making major life plans — has contributed to a steady decline in the divorce rate over the last three years. (Is it too soon to say that this might be one of our greatest accomplishments as a generation? If so, we’re calling it early.) Though we do seem to kind of be killing it at this whole “being married” thing, we’re not too proud to admit that we’re still constantly on the hunt for the best advice on wedded life that we can get our hands on.

For these pearls of wisdom, we typically turn to relationship experts and couples who have successfully lived their lives together for decades. But what about the people who’ve had a front row seat to what some might call failures of the institution of marriage? Yes — we’re talking about divorce lawyers. These professionals have met with tons of couples struggling in the depths of coupledom’s greatest challenges, so if anyone is prepared to identify potential red flags in our relationships, these attorneys are about as qualified as they come. Keep reading for eight brilliant nuggets of marriage advice from the legal minds working on the front lines of so-called marriage battles each and every day.

Do things together

It may sound simple, but according to Alabama attorney Caleb Ballew, too many couples don’t do it — which often lands them smack in the middle of divorce court. Do more than just sit on the couch wordlessly watching TV: Get active outside of your day-to-day routine! "If a couple is spending planned time together and sharing in activities and events" Ballew explains, "then each will have a shared sense of enjoyment over money spent and [will] share relaxation time from work or kids."

Look out for narcissistic tendencies early on

Florida lawyer Eric Klein knows all too well what happens to relationships when narcissistic, misogynistic, or other toxic (or abusive) behaviors surface after the wedding day. "When these issues do appear, sometimes they appear slowly and gradually to a point where one partner or spouse does not realize it — nor do they want to acknowledge it — for years," he reveals. To avoid this recipe for an unhappy (and still potentially lengthy) marriage, be mindful of red flags (an exaggerated sense of self importance, a sense of entitlement, and arrogance, to name a few) before you even say, "I do."

Don't bring work home

We know that the to-do list sitting on your desk at the office feels perpetually overwhelming, but we urge you to resist the temptation to carry those tasks into the hours of the day when you’re supposed to be off the clock. If the promise of that precious (yet seemingly unattainable) thing called "work-life balance" isn’t enough to convince you, then we’ll defer to Dallas divorce attorney Aubrey Connatser. The founder of Connatser Family Law in Dallas, TX, Connatser also happens to be married to a fellow lawyer, and she tells us that she and her partner make a point to leave their cases and files at work before turning their attention to matters at home.

11 surprising celebrity couples who broke up before ultimately getting married — and are still together

Will and kate

It's easy to believe that all celebrity couples have a fairytale romance, but many have admitted that their trip to the alter wasn't always easy. In fact, some took time apart during their romantic journey.

We've rounded up all the couples that almost didn't end up together forever, and had at least one break up on the path to their wedding day.

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard

Despite picture of true love now, Kristen Bell revealed to PopSugar that her now-husband Dax Shepard actually broke up with her shortly after they began dating.

"He sat me down and said, 'I can't have this right now. I think you're wonderful, but I am still dating other people,'" she said. "And then I, like, liquefied and fell to the ground, but I felt incredibly respected that he had the balls to tell me we weren't in the same place."

Of course, shortly after, he knew he made a mistake.

"He called me and he was like, 'I don't know what I was thinking. I was dating someone else but they're just not as interesting as you, and I don't know what I'm doing,' and he came back," Bell told PopSugar.

Shepard and Bell got married in 2013 so everything obviously worked out for them, but she said that she doesn't let him forget that they almost were never married.

"But I still always remind him of when he broke up with me," she told PopSugar.

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend

They are the internet's favorite couple now, but John Legend revealed to The Guardian that his relationship with Chrissy Teigen was almost over after a particularly stressful day.

"I was really stressed and busy," Legend said. "I was just like: 'I’d just be happier single right now.'"

Well Teigen wasn't having it; she told him no, they weren't breaking up.

Technically this wasn't a real breakup. Teigen later tweeted clarifying that she recognized that Legend was just having a particularly tough day.

"It wasn't a a typical breakup," she tweeted. "He was on tour and his voice hurt and he was being a whiny face about everything and so yeah, I was like 'no.'"

Still it sure makes for a funny story knowing now how happy the couple is now.

Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo

Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo may be proud parents and a happily married couple today, but once upon a 2013 they ended things in a kind of messy way.

The couple began dating in 2012 after Levine broke up with Prinsloo's friend and fellow Victoria's Secret model Anne Vyalitsyna. Levine and Prinsloo dated until May 2013, when he reportedly began dating Sports Illustrated supermodel Nina Agdal.

But that relationship was short-lived. By July 2013, Levine and Prinsloo got back together and got engaged. They were married in June 2014, and Prinsloo gave birth to daughter Dusty Rose in September 2016. The couple is expecting another child together.

Facebook is dropping $35 million to lease a beautiful, earthquake-resistant skyscraper in San Francisco — take a look inside

181 Fremont residential tower building renderings

Thousands of Facebook employees are about to experience a much more pleasant commute.

The social media giant has signed a lease at 181 Fremont, a mixed-use skyscraper that will be the tallest residential building on the West Coast once it's completed later this year. The tower rises 70 stories over San Francisco's Financial District and will house 2,000 to 3,000 Facebook and Instagram employees across 33 floors, a spokesperson for Facebook told Business Insider.

The 436,000-square-foot office space will be Facebook's first outpost in San Francisco. The company currently shuttles thousands of employees from the city to its headquarters in Menlo Park, which is located about 35 miles south. The jaunt can take up to two hours in traffic.

The blockbuster deal, which was first reported by the San Francisco Business Times, marks San Francisco's largest office lease in three years. The Business Times didn't report the duration of the lease, but said the asking rent was "around $80 per square foot," which totals to $35 million for the entire space. Facebook declined to confirm details of the lease.

Facebook employees will share the stunning new skyscraper with some well-heeled residential tenants — the upper floors hold 67 luxury condos.

These renderings of 181 Fremont give us a glimpse inside Facebook's new building.

Facebook's first outpost in San Francisco is one of the most lavish towers in the city.

Designer Orlando Diaz-Azcuy and architectural firm Heller Manus Architects set out to make 181 Fremont the epitome of luxury. Developers of the $665 million tower spared no expense.

"The vision for 181 Fremont is not simply to raise the bar for luxury living in San Francisco, but to set an entirely new one," a brochure for interested residential buyers said.

It rises 70 stories over the Financial District and neighbors the new Salesforce Tower.

The developers of 181 Fremont describe the building as an "engineering marvel." An aluminum-based exoskeleton twists around the building to provide added support.

Chip Joanna Gaines Fixer Upper

Thanks to their HGTV hit show "Fixer Upper,"Chip and Joanna Gaines have transformed dozens of dilapidated properties into beautiful homes in the Waco, Texas, area.

If you've ever wondered what it's like to be cast on the show, now's your chance. Blogger Rachel Teodoro recently sat down with "Fixer Upper" alum Lindy Ermoian to get the inside scoop we've all been waiting for. She also scored an exclusive interview with alum Jaime Ferguson back in 2016.

Here are the 18 most surprising revelations about "Fixer Upper" from Teodoro's blog, along with some behind-the-scenes tidbits we found on the web.

The house-hunting scenes are staged.

Chip and Joanna kick off each episode of "Fixer Upper" by showing their clients three potential properties for their house flip.

However, it turns out clients typically purchase a home before the show even starts filming, according to Lindy Ermoian, whose home was featured on season 3, episode 13 of "Fixer Upper."

It's worth mentioning that David Ridley, another "Fixer Upper" alum, shared this secret with Country Living last year.

You can save a ton on construction costs.

Lindy wasn't in love with the rust-colored roof of her house, but Joanna graciously offered to replace it for half price, Teodoro revealed

See incredible before-and-after photos from "Fixer Upper" here.

The casting process has quite a few steps.

Jaime Ferguson applied to HGTV after moving to Waco, Texas, from Austin. The very next day, she heard from the casting agency. However, Jamie had to go through a Skype interview, a written questionnaire, a few phone calls, and some meetings before ending up on the show.

She and her husband Kyle were featured on season 3, episode 5 of "Fixer Upper."

NFL WEEK 3: Our official predictions for who wins this weekend

Jameis Winston after win

Week 3 of the NFL season is here!

After two weeks, football fans are getting an idea of how this year might shake out. This week, 2-0 teams will look to prove their early season success isn't just a fluke, and 0-2 teams will desperately try to save their young seasons from postseason irrelevance.

For gamblers, Week 3 presents a tough challenge, as there are a whopping ten home underdogs on the slate. Educated bettors know to always take a close look at home dogs, but with so many on the schedule it's tough to know where to put your money and where it's safe to lay the points.

We went 11-5 against the spread last week, bringing our season total to a pleasantly profitable 21-10 so far. We'll try to continue our winning ways below.

All lines come courtesy of the Westgate Las Vegas Superbook.

Los Angeles Rams (-3) at San Francisco 49ers (Thursday, 8:25 p.m. ET)

The pick: Niners +3

The logic: Thursday Night Football has blessed us with yet another game of questionable watchability. It's probably a stay-away game for most bettors, but if you're feeling the itch, here's one stat to know: over the Niners' past 22 games they are 0-19 against teams not named the Rams, and 3-0 against teams that are named the Rams. On Thursday, they're playing a team named the Rams. Just a thought.

Baltimore Ravens (-3.5) at Jacksonville Jaguars (Sunday, 9:30 a.m. ET in London)

The pick: Ravens -3.5

The logic: While I'm not sure if I'm buying the Ravens as the 2-0 defensive powerhouse they've shown themselves to be thus far, it's tough to turn down the chance to bet against Blake Bortles when he's facing a defense that is averaging four interceptions a week. The Ravens' defensive numbers will eventually regress to the norm, but we can ride them for one more week in this spot.

Denver Broncos (-3) at Buffalo Bills (Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET)

The pick: Bills +3

The logic: The Broncos and quarterback Trevor Siemian are one of the biggest stories in the league right now, fresh off a win in which they made the Cowboys look absolutely mediocre. Meanwhile the Bills struggled to beat the Jets to open the season. This, dear reader, is what we call a trap game. The line feels way to small, but this is the Broncos first road test of the year, and according to both SportsInsights and OddsShark, Denver is currently the most heavily bet team of the week, taking a 84% of the bets on this game. When the world zigs, we zag, especially if it means we get a home dog.

7 healthy Starbucks hacks to cut calories on your next order

starbucks

A Grande Vanilla Latte may sound innocent enough — until you realize you’ve just ingested 250 calories and 35 grams of sugar. Although your go-to orders may rack up some serious button-busting calorie counts, that doesn’t mean you have to give up on Starbucks for good in order to witness your waistline shrink. Fortunately for coffee lovers, the java giant offers plenty of modifications and room for customization — even if it’s not scribbled on their menu. Find out how to slim down your caffeinated Starbucks order with these simple hacks and then check out the 28 Starbucks Items That Diet Experts Love for other delicious picks that won’t break your calorie budget.

Cut it short

Thought you could only order a Tall, Grande, Venti, or Trenta? Although it’s not listed on the menu, ordering a Short is also an option. Getting your go-to order in Sbux’s smallest size, the 8-ounce Short, will slash four ounces worth of your chosen beverage’s calories and save you a few bucks compared to ordering the Tall. If you usually opt for a low-cal option like plain iced coffee with a splash of cream, we say go for the Grande. But if you’re in the mood to splurge on a seasonal latte (hello, PSL), the 8-ounce shouldn’t break your calorie budget.

Know your milk alternatives

In Starbucks’ beginnings, former CEO and current Executive Chairman Howard Schultz only allowed whole milk in stores because he wanted the shop’s offerings to stay true to authentic Italian-style espresso drinks. Thankfully, Sbux has evolved since and now offers 2 percent and skim milk in addition to adding non-dairy options like almond, coconut, and soy milk to fit its diverse customers’ diets. And FYI, unless you specify which milk you want, Starbucks will concoct your coffee with 2 percent milk.

If you’re watching your weight, we still recommend the 2 percent over the skim because it has a gram less sugar and packs in a solid dose of healthy fats. If you prefer a plant-based milk, go for the almond or soy over the coconut milk, which has just one gram of protein and absolutely no fiber per 12 ounces.

Be specific about your syrups

A sweetened Tall order is made with three pumps of syrup, while a Grande is made with four pumps, and a hot or iced Venti beverage has five or six pumps, respectively. Each flavored pump packs in about 20 calories and five grams of sugar. So if you opt for a Grande Vanilla Latte with two pumps of vanilla syrup instead of four, you’ll be sparing your waistline of 40 calories and 10 grams of sugar!

The definitive Wall Street scorecard is out — and Goldman Sachs is slipping

falling tripping fall tumble crash wipeout

The latest ranking of Wall Street supremacy is out, and there's a notable shift at the top of the league tables.

JPMorgan once again dominated the competition in the first half of the year for revenue across fixed income, equities, and banking, according to data-analytics company Coalition.

The largest bank by assets in the US hauled in $13.2 billion in revenue through half of 2017 — up from $12.5 billion at last year's midpoint — ranking No. 1 in investment banking and FICC (fixed income, currencies, and commodities) and tying for first in equities with Morgan Stanley

But Goldman Sachs, which has recently occupied or shared the No. 2 overall spot— including in the full-year results for 2016 — has slipped to third in a tie with Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

Citi now has sole possession of second place, thanks to a strong showing in FICC. Within that business, Citi ranked No. 1 in emerging markets macro, commodities, and municipal finance and No. 2 in G10 rates.

Goldman's drop is notable, but not surprising. Its bond-trading unit has had an abysmal year, with 2Q FICC revenue falling 40% lower than the second quarter of 2016 and 31% below its weak first quarter — its worst performance in recent years.

Trading has been gloomy across Wall Street, but Goldman Sachs in particular has suffered. That's reflected in the tables, with Goldman dropping from the top-3 in FICC and from second to third in equities.

Goldman Sachs' loss is Bank of America Merrill Lynch's gain. The firm tied for third overall, leapfrogging Goldman in FICC revenues and tying Goldman for second in investment banking revenues.

The top-5 banks overall were all based in the US.

Here's the global ranking, plus the rankings broken down by region:

JPMorgan cleaned up, taking first in each of the three broad categories and placing in the top-3 of every line of business.

Likewise, JPMorgan set the pace in the regions, coming in first in the Americas and Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Citi was tops in Asia.

For comparison, here's the league table results from the full-year 2016. As noted, Goldman Sachs dropped in a few areas of business in the first half of 2017.

The best gaming consoles you can buy

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

gaming 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • Video game consoles are next-level awesome these days. Of all the consoles out there, the PlayStation 4 Pro is our top pick for most gamers. A great game library, 4K Ultra HD output, compatibility with popular streaming services, VR capability, and an excellent gamepad make this console the best plug-and-play system out there.

Video games were popularized decades ago in public arcades, where kids and adults alike spent many hours and quarters playing titles like "Galaga," "Contra, Donkey Kong," and "Pac-Man" on bulky standing machines with built-in joysticks and flickering CRT monitors. It wasn’t long before people started dreaming of the day when they could play their favorite games right at home, however, and so the gaming console was born.

Consoles have become a staple of consumer technology since popular models like the Atari 2600 and the Nintendo Entertainment System blazed a trail back in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, but these devices have come a long way from the old 8-bit 2D graphics of decades past. Gaming machines today boast a mind-boggling array of features and advanced hardware to create highly detailed virtual worlds and cinematic experiences, with the latest models even allowing the use of a VR headset for unparalleled immersion.

Not all consoles and gamers are alike, however, and it’s important to select the right one for your needs and tastes. Serious gaming enthusiasts should look for a system with 4K capability for use with Ultra HDTVs (such as the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X), although even if you don’t have a UHD television, the improved hardware inside these machines delivers better overall performance and the consoles are future-proofed if you decide to upgrade to a 4K TV later.

For kids, families, and more casual players, on the other hand, a simpler console that offers a more social and user-friendly gaming experience may be more suitable. Portability is another consideration, especially for children or people who are on the move a lot and want to take their games on the go. In this case, handheld systems like the Nintendo 3DS XL or even hybrid machines like the Switch are a solid option.

To help you decide which gaming platform is right for you, we’ve researched and picked out the five best systems available on the market today, from beefy 4K machines to home consoles and portable devices aimed at more casual users. We’ve graded our selections based on hardware specs, game libraries, price, and special features like 3D or VR capabilities, among other things.

Although the PlayStation 4 Pro is our top pick, for various reasons laid out in the slides below, you should also consider the Xbox One S, the Nintendo Switch, the New Nintendo 3DS XL, and the Xbox One X.

The best gaming console overall

Why you'll love it: The PlayStation 4 Pro boasts excellent hardware with a fantastic game library to match, and its re-designed DualShock 4 controller is a much-needed upgrade over previous versions of Sony’s gamepad.

Sony has been one of the top names in consoles since the classic PlayStation was released in 1994, and its latest offering does not disappoint. The PlayStation 4 Pro is the latest revision of the original 2013 PS4 and boasts an upgraded GPU that gives this gaming machine 4K capability and improved performance with PlayStation VR, Sony’s own virtual reality headset. The PS4 also shipped with a re-designed and much-improved DualShock controller, and the newer DualShock 4 is among the best gamepads ever designed. It also does double-duty as a fantastic PC controller, too, according to The Wirecutter.

Prior to the announcement and release of the Xbox One X, the PS4 Pro was the only gaming console capable of playing games in 4K (3,840 x 2,160) resolution. 4K play is currently available on a select number of titles, and naturally, you can only take full advantage of this feature if you own a 4K Ultra HD television. Nonetheless, the improved processing power of the Pro still delivers a better performance with fewer frame-rate drops and smoother gameplay even if you’re not playing 4K games on a compatible television. A 4K console is also future-proof. If you decide to upgrade to an Ultra HD TV later, you won’t need to buy a new console to fully enjoy it.

Aside from its boosted hardware and 4K HDR capabilities, where the PS4 Pro really shines is its game library, according to Digital Trends. The PS4 has possibly the best lineup of triple-A, indie, and import games, including many that other consoles like the Xbox One do not receive – consider exclusives like "The Last Guardian," "Bloodborne,""The Last of Us," and the upcoming "Shadow of the Colossus Remastered." This is, admittedly, subject to taste. If you’re the type who can’t get enough of Xbox-exclusive franchises like Halo, Gears of War, and Forza, then Microsoft’s gaming platform might be a better fit.

By far the biggest drawback to the PlayStation 4 Pro is its curious lack of a 4K Blu-Ray player. It’s somewhat baffling that Sony, the company that invented the Blu-Ray medium, would omit a 4K Blu-Ray player from its much-hyped 4K console. This was presumably done to cut costs on what is admittedly a fairly expensive console — the PS4 Pro is not cheap at $399 — but the console can still stream 4K HDR video and can play standard Blu-Ray discs.

Another drawback, and one where Sony lags behind Microsoft, is with backward compatibility. Unfortunately, the PlayStation 4 Pro cannot play PS3 game discs. The only way to enjoy legacy media is through Sony’s PS Now streaming service, which offers paid game rentals or a monthly subscription plan. And while Sony is slowly but surely expanding the list of available games, the service has not been received well by gamers who have no way to purchase titles (PS Now only lets you rent and stream games for a set period of time) or to play older ones that they already own.

Pros: Great hardware specs, a solid library of games, 4K Ultra HD capability with high dynamic range (HDR), “boost mode” enhances older games, and it can support the PlayStation VR headset

Cons: It’s more expensive than the Xbox One S, offers limited support for legacy games, and cannot play 4K Blu-Rays

The best gaming console for multimedia

Why you'll love it: The Xbox One S offers great capabilities — from running the latest triple-A games to playing 4K Ultra HD Blu-Rays — and accomplishes it at a price that should make other console makers blush.

It might seem redundant to have two Microsoft consoles on our list, but the Xbox One S is far from old and busted even if the Xbox One X is the new hotness. Although the Xbox One X boasts more impressive hardware, the S is our top pick for buyers who want an affordable all-in-one gaming and multimedia machine that can play the latest AAA games as well as stream shows and movies via popular services like Netflix and Hulu. The console also offers a true 4K HDR experience with compatible TVs, including the ability to play 4K Blu-Rays, and comes in at half the price of the newer X.

The Xbox One S is the second revision of Microsoft’s eighth-generation console. It’s a slimmer, smaller update to the original system, with improved hardware and the ability to stream 4K video and play Ultra HD Blu-Rays, according to Digital Trends. Even the controller was upgraded with new Bluetooth connectivity that lets you use it with Windows 10 without the need for a wireless adapter, a nice bonus for PC gamers.

The PlayStation 4 might have a slight edge when it comes to its game library, but the Xbox One is no slouch with its own solid lineup of triple-A and indie titles as well as huge exclusive franchises like "Halo" and "Gears of War." It’s also backwards compatible with a large and growing number of Xbox 360 titles. But where the Xbox One S really stands out, in our opinion, is in its multimedia capabilities. Along with a 4K Blu-Ray player, the Xbox offers great support for popular streaming services like Netflix, making the console a great all-in-one entertainment machine.

Another big point for the Xbox One S is its low cost relative to the X and the PS4 Pro, which come in at $500 and $400 respectively. You can score a new Xbox One S for as little as $250 and there is a myriad of bundles available at different price points, including many special edition consoles, to suit almost any taste. Considering its hardware and extensive multimedia capabilities, the S is arguably the best value in a home gaming console right now.

Although the Xbox One S can stream in 4K and has an Ultra HD Blu-Ray player, be aware that it cannot render games in 4K — to do that, you need a system designed for it like the One X or PS4 Pro. Furthermore, while Microsoft has said that future games developed for the X’s beefier hardware will still be playable on the S (although at lower settings), this still leaves some questions as to how well the older system will handle newer titles and how long Microsoft intends to support it. Nonetheless, it’s highly unlikely that Microsoft will drop support for the Xbox One S any time soon, so this should not be a major concern for the foreseeable future.

Pros: A 4K HDR Blu-Ray player, improved specs over the original Xbox One, more affordable than other consoles, backward compatibility with many Xbox 360 titles, numerous bundle options available, and great streaming support

Cons: Cannot render games in 4K, and it’s unclear how well the console will be able to handle future titles developed for the Xbox One X

Buy the Xbox One S on Amazon for $250

The best video game console for casual players

Why you'll love it: The Nintendo Switch is a great console for families, people who love multiplayer titles, and casual gamers, and its unique design lets you play at home on a TV or take it on the go.

Nintendo is a brand that needs little introduction. This Japanese company made gaming consoles mainstream (and probably saved the game industry) with the 1983 release of the Famicom, later released in the West as the now-legendary Nintendo Entertainment System. Nintendo has continued to innovate and redefine the home gaming market with unique products like the motion-controlled Wii, but the new Nintendo Switch might be the most ambitious console design yet, according to Digital Trends and other reviewers.

The developers at Nintendo love to re-invent the wheel (or in this case, the console) and the Switch does exactly that. Its 2-in-1 hybrid design lets you use the Switch as a home gaming system with its docking station plugged into your TV, or if you want to use it as a portable device, the tablet-like “body” of the system can slide out of its dock so you can take your games on the go.

The Nintendo Switch also offers a great at-home social gaming experience, something that modern consoles have largely ignored in favor of online-focused multiplayer. While the Switch does feature online play for multiplayer games like the delightful "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe," its removable control paddles also make it simple to hand out controllers and let your friends and family join in the fun right beside you.

Note that Nintendo’s online multiplayer service has been free since the Wii, but this will no longer be the case once Nintendo Switch Online launches in 2018. At only $20 per year, it’s still cheaper than Xbox Live Gold and PS Plus, both of which cost around $50-60 for a 12-month subscription.

The biggest question mark with the Nintendo Switch pops up in regards to what is arguably the most important part of choosing a console: the games. Right now, the Switch has a somewhat skimpy lineup of titles, and it’s unclear how the system will handle older games. Both the Wii and the Wii U were backward compatible with previous-generation game discs, a great feature that the Switch notably lacks. The hardware is also weaker than that found in other consoles — something that has been common with Nintendo consoles since the GameCube — which brings into question its future ability to handle modern triple-A games.

Backwards compatibility isn’t a deal-breaker for most buyers just looking to enjoy newer games, however, and while the Switch library is a bit light at the moment, it’s a completely new console (not just a hardware upgrade like the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X) but already offers some great single- and multi-player games like "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" and "Splatoon 2." Owners can also expect plenty of Nintendo’s famous first-party franchises, including Super Mario, Kirby, Super Smash Bros, and Mario Kart, coming to the Switch in the future. Numerous third-party developers have also pledged to bring their games to Nintendo’s new system.

Pros: A unique form factor lets you switch from console to portable mode, it’s great for at-home and online multiplayer gaming, and it’s a good choice for kids and families

Cons: Game library is somewhat lacking at the moment, weaker hardware compared to other consoles, and it’s unclear how the system will handle legacy media

Buy the Nintendo Switch on Amazon for $360
