Stark photos show what street food is like in North Korea

Tastes of North Korea

  • Many North Koreans still sustain themselves with food that comes from the state.
  • Illegal "grasshopper markets" are common, however.
  • Many common street foods in North Korea are low in nutrients.

When North Koreans need to buy groceries, they don't go to a grocery store.

According to Reuters, 70% of North Koreans still use the state's central distribution system as their main source of food. But many also visit illegal "grasshopper markets"— which earned their name because of how fast stalls must be set up and taken down — as well as officially sanctioned ones, where traders must pay a fee to the state to sell their wares.

The dishes you'll find there, such as "injogogibab," which is also known as "man-made meat," rely heavily on rice, kimchi, and bean paste. Lacking in essential fats and proteins, these dishes are made with ingredients that have been a staple during the country's ongoing food crisis, which has left two in five North Koreans undernourished. In the 1990s, a famine killed up to one million North Korean people.

Reporters have seen signs of chronic hunger in the country as recently as 2013, but some who have defected say the food supply has improved in recent years, according to Reuters.

Ahead, take a look at the food that North Koreans can get from both illegal street vendors and from some of the legal, officially sanctioned markets.

Injogogibab is made of the remains left from making soy bean oil. The oil is pressed and rolled into a paste, then topped off with fish-based sauce or chili paste. This dish used to be eaten as a substitute for meat, which gave it its nickname of "man-made meat."

Injogogi, pictured here, is a textured vegetable protein.

The 17 men Taylor Swift has written about in her songs

taylor swift 1989 world tour

Taylor Swift has become famous for turning heartache into melodies. But the exes and past flings who inspired her chart-topping songs should get some credit, too.

But knowing who to credit isn't always obvious. Generally speaking, Swift avoids answering specific questions about the people in her songs. And it's not always clear if she's referencing specific people at all.

By scrutinizing her lyrics, though, we can figure out the subjects of some of her songs. From her current boyfriend Joe Alwyn to high school ex Jordan Alford, here are the 17 men who are likely the stars of Taylor Swift's music.

Farai Bennett contributed to a previous version of this article

SEE ALSO: The ACLU has come out swinging against Taylor Swift after her lawyer threatened a blogger with legal action

"Look What You Made Me Do" likely references Calvin Harris.

Harris and Swift had what seems to be a messy breakup. After the release of "This is What You Came For," a track ostensibly by Harris and Rihanna and the former's biggest hit, the news leaked that the song's true writer, Nils Sjöberg, was actually Swift herself.

It was more than a little embarrassing for Harris. Swift hammered it in even further with her recent music video for her generalized revenge song "Look What You Made Me Do," where a headstone for Sjöberg sits in the background of a shot where Swift is zombiefied.

There are also at least three presiding theories about which man the song "Gorgeous" is about, one of them being that it's about Harris.

Tom Hiddleston could be the older boyfriend in "Gorgeous."

The same two songs — "Look What You Made Me Do" and "Gorgeous"— may also be about Tom Hiddleston.

Hiddleswift, as the two were known during their relationship in the summer of 2016, was short-lived. It also took place at a time where Swift scrupulously avoided the press. So it's hard to know exactly how she feels about it.

"The video for "Look What You Made Me Do" features Swift in an "I ♥ T.S." T-shirt, which Hiddleston wore at one point, though that seems to be more of a lighthearted jab than anything malicious. And the lyrics for "Gorgeous" aren't too specific, but given the timing of its release, it could very well be about him.

"Gorgeous" and "Call It What You Want" are probably about Joe Alwyn.

Swift's current boyfriend Joe Alwyn is an actor and model. There are two songs from "Reputation" that could be about him: "Gorgeous" and "Call It What You Want."

The latter song, especially, seems to be about a man she sees as a refuge from personal drama and squabbles with other people. While she's been with Alwyn, she's lived a relatively work-focused, drama-free life.

These are the 5 greatest US foreign-policy presidents

$

george washington

The American president is the individual primarily responsible for the United States’ foreign policy.

While the president divvies up domestic issues with Congress and the states, the Constitution gives the president broad power to command the armed forces, make treaties, and appoint diplomats.

Furthermore, in accordance with the War Powers Resolution of 1973, the president can deploy troops for up to 60 days without congressional approval.

In this author’s view, a good foreign policy is one that serves America’s interests, that is, the security of the nation and the prosperity of its people, and a good American foreign policy president is one who understanding this, acts according, rather than pursuing idealistic fantasies.

America’s interests change in different times and places, so realism means different things to different presidents, and encompasses a broad range of policies.

But realism does not mean an open-ended war on a strategy, terrorism, nor does it mean constant interventionism aimed at changing the domestic institutions of other countries. Of course, the United States can still serve as an exemplar for other countries.

Under these criteria, who then are the leaders who looked best after US foreign policy interests? Here are my five best foreign policy presidents:

SEE ALSO: These are America's 5 worst foreign-policy presidents

George Washington (1789-1797)

Our first president set the gold standard for pursuing the most reasonable foreign policy for the United States given the circumstances.

As historian George C. Herring noted in From Colony to Superpower: US Foreign Relations Since 1776: “The United States in 1789 remained weak and vulnerable…its regular army totaled fewer than five hundred men.” Obviously, this constrained the nation’s options, although not forever, as Washington realized: “The Washington administration accepted the need for patience. But it prepared for the future by encouraging settlement of contested territory…Americans began to think in terms of an empire stretching from the Atlantic to Pacific…”

Washington resisted the pressure of both Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton to closely align with either France or Great Britain, the premiere powers of the time. While US commercial interests dictated that it maintain good relations with Britain, its geopolitical position necessitated good relations with France, which had the ability to temper British power in the Atlantic.

Therefore, when the British and French went to war in 1793, Washington issued a proclamation of neutrality, which stated that “the duty and interest of the United States require, that they should with sincerity and good faith adopt and pursue a conduct friendly and impartial toward the belligerent powers.” Later, in 1795, Washington’s administration negotiated the Jay Treaty with Britain, which granted trade privileges to the US and led to the evacuation of British forts in the northwestern US in return for minor concessions to the British. Although this treaty prevented war with Britain, it was nonetheless greeted with hostility by the partisans like Jefferson.

Yet, it was a shining example of how realpolitik and the diplomatic give-and-take of diplomacy served US interests over passionate ideology. As Herring wrote of the popular reaction to the treaty:

Foreign policy in the United States was subject to debate by a public whose understanding of the issues and mechanisms was neither sophisticated nor nuanced, that sought clear-cut and definitive solutions, and defined outcomes in terms of victory and defeat.

Such attitudes, unfortunately, persist even unto the modern era, and are found in certain attitudes toward the Iran nuclear agreement.

In his famous farewell address, Washington articulated some grand principles that stand the test of time, regardless of whether the United States pursued a more inward or outward foreign policy orientation. In particular, laying out the principles of realism, and expressing wariness of permanent alliances, he said that:

Permanent, inveterate antipathies against particular nations, and passionate attachments for others, should be excluded; and that, in place of them, just and amicable feelings towards all should be cultivated… [likewise] a passionate attachment of one nation for another produces a variety of evils.

Ultimately, the best foreign policy for the United States remains the same today as it was in Washington’s time: “Harmony, liberal intercourse with all nations [as] recommended by policy, humanity, and interest.”

John Adams (1797-1801)

Although George Washington was a tough act to follow, the United States was most vulnerable at its inception, and most in need of a steady guiding hand in foreign policy during its early years. After Washington’s retirement, this was provided by Adams.

Adams came to power after defeating Jefferson in the 1796 election, operating at a time when the US was still not free from British and French machinations. In fact, according to Herring, the French may have attempted to swing the election in Jefferson’s favor.

As the French failed to install a pro-French government in the United States, they instead disregarded the nation’s neutrality, and began seizing US shipping, which resulted in the annulment of the 1778 Treaty of Alliance between the two nations on July 7, 1798 (which the US had little intention of actually fulfilling, as it had neither the reason nor the ability to fight several European powers as France’s ally). This was a good move, as any attempt on the part of the US to entangle itself in European wars at this point could have resulted in its destruction at the hands of a coalition of European powers.

Nor did Adams get involved in a declared war with France, despite the existence of great hostility, and a quasi-war. In the infamous XYZ affair, various anonymous French agents demanded bribes from American diplomats as a prerequisite for negotiations on pending issues, leading to anti-French hysteria in the US Unlike some future leaders, Adams did not get carried away by this hysteria to engage in foolish and unnecessary wars, i.e. the US invasion of Iraq in 2003.

The gift of Adams’ touch was his ability to take a firm line against France without involving the country in a war it could ill afford at the moment; the US commissioned more battleships than the entire existing US fleet and armed merchant vessels, while all the while pursuing diplomacy. By 1800, he was able to reach a new understanding with France through diplomacy, without jeopardizing the new nation’s neutrality and sovereignty.

Although John Adams is often overshadowed by the other Founding Fathers, he managed to preserve the United States’ unique geopolitical position and diplomatic stance at a time when European machinations, aided by some Americans, could have torn the nation apart in its infancy.

Abraham Lincoln (1861-1865)

Abraham Lincoln is mostly known for his role in leading the Union to victory in the Civil War, but all the industrial might and demographic heft of the North may not have been enough to prevent the secession of the South, had the latter gained official recognition from foreign powers.

After all, it was the French recognition and aid to the United States in 1778 that greatly contributed to U.S. independence. Initially, both Britain and France leaned toward the South, for geopolitical reasons—such as weakening the United States—and commercial reasons, in particular the import of cotton.

Yet, neither country recognized the Confederacy in the end. Lincoln’s primary achievement for American foreign policy was the setting of a precedent by which foreign powers ceased their intervention in the domestic affairs of the United States, as well as in the general neighborhood of the U.S.

While the French tried to manipulate popular opinion during Washington’s presidency in favor of the French Revolution, and the British attempted to curry favor in New England (and possibly foster a secessionist movement there) during the War of 1812, the influence of these two foreign powers was limited during the Civil War.

As this author noted in a prior article, “During the Civil War, Charles Francis Adams Sr., son and grandson of U.S. presidents with extensive diplomatic experience, served as ambassador to Britain and was instrumental in dissuading the British from recognizing the South.” British public opinion, which was resoundingly anti-slavery, made it difficult for the British government to support the South, especially after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued at the start of 1863.

Moreover, the British were able to source cotton from alternative sources, such as India and Egypt. As Conrad Black argued in Flight of the Eagle: The Grand Strategies that Brought America from Colonial Dependence to World Leadership:

The British had at all times to weigh the fact that if they pushed the Union too heard, they would be flung out of Canada and probably the West Indies….Britain had no ability to defend Canada from the ever-growing Union Army, now nearly 500,000 men.

France proved to be both more pesky, but also less of an immediate threat than the British. Rather than intervening to support the South, it instead established a puppet state in Mexico in 1864, which was a clear violation of the Monroe Doctrine, and a threat to U.S. interests. Both Lincoln and General Ulysses S. Grant secured money and weapons for the Mexicans to fight the French, who eventually withdrew from that country in 1867.

Lincoln secured the country’s continued existence through diplomacy during a time when it was at the greatest risk of disintegration and foreign manipulation.

You can take time off work to vote in 30 US states — but you're out of luck in the rest

ohio early voting 2016

If you're wondering whether you can come in late or leave work early to cast your vote on election day, the short answer is, it depends on where you work.

Currently, there is no federal law that mandates employers provide their employees time off to cast their ballots. But the majority of US states have time-off-to-vote laws, also referred to as voter-leave laws, and have different requirements and exceptions for employers and employees.

While some states guarantee paid time off, for example, others do not. And the time guaranteed for employees to vote varies state-by-state as well.

Of course, your own employer may offer leave to vote, even if your state does not. In 2016, for example, Patagonia announced that would close all US stores on Election Day in an effort to encourage customers and employees to vote.

But, since not everyone's employer is so generous, you'd be well-advised to learn about the specific voter leave provisions in your state.

This wallpaper hides the most controversial part of the iPhone X (AAPL)

Notchless iPhone X

  • The iPhone X has a "notch" that cuts into the top of its screen.
  • It's possible to hide the notch with a clever wallpaper.

Some people love "the notch," the defining characteristic of the iPhone X where Apple hides advanced 3D sensors at the top of the iPhone's screen.

The "notch," or "sensor housing," splits the top of the iPhone's screen into two, leaving so-called "ears" of screen space for little bits of information like signal strength or battery life.

But some people just want to hide it.

A new wallpaper shared on Twitter by Alex and Stephanie helps to hide the notch. It adapts Apple's default iPhone X wallpaper to include a strip of black at the top, giving the impression when it's fully set up that there's no notch up there — just a simple black bar.

Apple's own developer guidelines recommend that software makers embrace the notch, or develop their user interfaces so that the sensor housing cuts into the app's content.

This wallpaper does the opposite — it uses the new ability of the iPhone X screen to display blacker blacks to hide the notch, at least on the lock and home screens.

Here's how to set it up:

This is the full wallpaper. (You can also download it from Alex's tweet.) Download it and save it to your iPhone's camera roll.

You can set it as your wallpaper in Settings > Wallpaper > Choose a New Wallpaper.

Important note: to get the full notch-hiding effect, you need to set your wallpaper as "Still,' not "Perspective," and then adjust it until the black bar is fully underneath the notch. It should look like this, minus the arrows:

  • There are 12% fewer homes for sale today than there were a year ago.
  • Buyers typically search for months and sometimes make multiple offers on different homes before one gets accepted.
  • Zillow's CEO, Spencer Rascoff, shared four tips for winning a bidding war, from choosing a reputable agent to writing the seller a letter.

It's a seller's market.

A report from real-estate website Zillow finds there are 12% fewer homes for sale today than there were a year ago. So if you're looking to purchase a place, you'd best be prepared to hustle.

On an episode of Business Insider's podcast, "Success! How I Did It," Zillow's CEO, Spencer Rascoff, told Business Insider US editor-in-chief Alyson Shontell that buyers generally search for about four months before they find a place and sometimes make multiple offers on a dozen homes before one gets accepted. (A 2016 Zillow report indicates that about one-quarter of buyers make three or more offers.)

Listen to the full episode here, or listen later with the buttons below:

Rascoff also shared his best advice for standing out in a sea of prospective buyers:

SEE ALSO: How the founder of Zillow and Hotwire led his startups through major crises, layoffs, and a down round to massive exits

1. Choose a stellar agent

"He or she can advocate for you and provide you advice," Rascoff said. "You should read reviews of real estate agents on Zillow or any website. I don't really care where you read reviews, don't just rely on a referral from a friend."

2. Be patient and persistent

"Be prepared to make multiple offers," Rascoff said.

3. Write a letter to the seller

"It can't hurt," Rascoff said. "But appealing to their emotions can be successful. I've had success a couple of times with that."

There's just been a massive purge in Saudi Arabian politics.

Business Insider's Peter Jacobs reported Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman consolidated power by having 11 princes and numerous government ministers seized Saturday.

But the captives are receiving better accommodations than a standard prison cell.

The royal and non-royal prisoners are reportedly confined to the five-star Ritz-Carlton Riyadh in the nation's capital.

Tesla has aggressive plans for the next few years — here's what's in the works (TSLA)

  • Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that the company aims to begin producing cars in China in 2020.
  • The company also aims to ramp up its energy business and launch several new cars in the same time frame.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has aggressive expansion plans for the company over the next few years.

One of the most notable things that Musk has planned is a big push into China. The company aims to begin producing its cars in a new factory in Shanghai in about three years, Musk said during Tesla's third-quarter earnings call Thursday.

But that's not all Musk envisions for Tesla during the next few years.

Among other things, Musk aims for Tesla to launch a new compact SUV, perfect autonomous cars, and expand its energy business — all by 2020.

Here's what else Musk wants Tesla to accomplish by then.

Finish building its giant battery plant called Gigafactory 1.

The Gigafactory 1, which is located in Nevada, is crucial to Tesla's future because it is expected to help the company produce batteries en masse so that it can drive down the cost of the technology by as much as 30%.

Tesla claims the Gigafactory would help the company dramatically cut the cost of its batteries once it's fully operational by "using economies of scale, innovative manufacturing, reduction of waste, and the simple optimization of locating most manufacturing process under one roof."

In fact, Tesla has said that by 2018 the Gigafactory will be able to produce almost as many lithium-ion cells as the rest of the world's battery production combined.

Ramp up Model 3 production.

Tesla wants to bring electric vehicles to the masses with its Model 3, but the company must first seriously ramp up production.

The company launched the car in July and has since been dealing with a production nightmare.

The problem stems from a manufacturing hiccup at the Gigafactory where the batteries for the Model 3 are made.

Because of the assembly issue, the company has to push its production timeline back by three months, Musk said during an earnings call on Thursday.

The company had originally aimed to build 5,000 cars a week by December, but now the company foresees hitting that production level by the end of the first quarter, so sometime around March.

The delay, though, hasn't changed the company's ultimate goal to ramp up its total vehicle production to one million vehicles per year by 2020.

Launch a compact SUV, dubbed the Model Y, by the end of 2019 or early 2020.

In July 2016, Musk confirmed that Tesla planned to bring to market a new compact SUV, dubbed the Model Y.

But a timeline for the vehicle wasn't disclosed until May, when Musk said during the company's first-quarter earnings call that it would arrive by late 2019 or 2020. He also said the vehicle would be built on a platform separate from the Model 3.

These are the races to watch on Election Day 2017

Ralph Northam

  • Several consequential elections will take place on Tuesday, including gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey, the New York City mayoral election, and a Utah special election.
  • Virginia's contest has been the most closely-watched and is widely viewed as a bellwether of Democratic opposition to President Donald Trump.

Voters in Virginia, New Jersey, Utah, and New York City will go to the polls on Tuesday to determine several consequential races.

Virginia's competitive gubernatorial contest is widely viewed as an early test for Democratic opposition to President Donald Trump, while in New Jersey, Democrats are hoping to take back a blue state that has been in a Republican governor's hands for the last 8 years.

What you need to know about the four elections:

Virginia governor's election

Virginia will hold its highly anticipated election to replace Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe on Tuesday. The race has turned into a bitter feud, with Republican Ed Gillespie accusing his Democratic opponent Ralph Northam of supporting gun rights for pedophiles, while Northam has labeled Gillespie a white supremacist

McAuliffe hand-picked Northam, a physician and his lieutenant governor, to run against Gillespie, the former Republican National Committee Chairman, whom the governor recently accused of running "the most hateful, racist, bigoted campaign" he'd ever seen.

In a controversial statement, President Donald Trump tweeted his support for Gillespie last month, writing that he hopes the Republican will "save our great statues/heritage," referring to Virginia's Confederate statues, which were at the center of a deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in August.

New Jersey governor's election

New Jersey voters will elect a new governor on Tuesday in a race to replace outgoing Gov. Chris Christie, whose approval ratings have sunk into the teens, making him the most unpopular governor in the country in two decades.

Democrat Phil Murphy, a former Wall Street banker and ambassador to Germany under former President Barack Obama, is leading the race against the state's Lieutenant Gov. Kim Guadagno. Murphy's campaign has worked hard to tie Guadagno to Christie, while the governor's deputy has attempted to keep her distance from her unpopular boss.

Democrats are in a good position to retake control of the solidly blue state, which has been in Republican hands for the last eight years.

2017 Car of the Year runner-up: The McLaren 720S might be the best supercar in the world

McLaren 720S 8

Editorial note: Business Insider will name its 2017 Car of the Year on November 14, based on 15 finalists. Each day this week, we're taking another look at the five vehicles that were runners-up.  On Monday, it was the Acura TLX A-Spec. Today, we present the 2018 McLaren 720S

  • The 2018 McLaren 720S delivers blistering speed, precise handling, and a luxurious ride.
  • The 720S features the latest in McLaren's traction management and carbon fiber chassis technology.
  • With 710 horsepower and a 212 mph top speed, what more could you want in a supercar?

Earlier this year, I was invited to be one of the first people to the drive the new McLaren 720S supercar. The catch? I had to go to Italy to do it. Because of an unfortunate flight schedule which required one day, three flights, and a detour through Switzerland, I finally arrived in Rome.

And boy was it worth it. I had the opportunity to experience the McLaren both on the roads in and around Rome as well as around the challenging corners of the Vallelunga Circuit. Through it all, the 720S lived up to the hype.

In my driving review of the car, I wrote: "The 720S is the supercar equivalent of a five-tool player in baseball. It excels at just about anything and everything required for a vehicle in this genre. There are no holes in its game. It delivers blistering, yet accessible performance, luxurious comfort, robust build quality, cutting-edge technology, and head-turning looks. To top it all off, the 720S delivers all of this with enough pomp and circumstance to put on a show for the driver. "

"Simply put, the McLaren 720S is the most "complete" supercar ever produced. Period," I gushed.

However, since then, I've wondered if my high praise of the 720S was affected by the picturesque settings and breathtaking driving roads? Was it all a holiday romance?

To find out, we asked McLaren for another 720S to test out. This time in an environment far less hospitable to supercars, Business Insider's headquarters in New York. (Although the car spent most of its time with us in neighboring New Jersey.)

A few weeks ago, McLaren dropped off a 2018 McLaren 720S Performance in a striking Paris Blue paint job. The 2018 720S starts at $284, 745 while our Performance spec car with extra carbon fiber starts at $296,175.

Here's a closer look at the 2018 McLaren 720S.

Regardless of when you read this, Jocko Willink woke up today before dawn to get in a hard workout.

As a Navy SEAL, Willink learned the extent to which the human body and mind can be pushed. And after he retired in 2010, after commanding the most decorated US special-operations unit of the Iraq War, he decided to share with the public some of the lessons he learned about discipline.

His new book, "Discipline Equals Freedom: Field Manual," is a practical collection of the leadership philosophy he has taught with his former platoon leader, Leif Babin, through their leadership consulting firm Echelon Front, as well as exercise and diet routines he's discussed on his hit podcast.

The book contains three detailed sets of four-day exercise routines for beginner, intermediate, and advanced skill levels. Willink, who has a decked-out home gym in his garage and a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, typically will stick with the advanced exercises, but he'll work in some lighter basics when he's traveling or recovering from a string of heavy workouts.

Business Insider recently asked Willink about his overall workout philosophy and broke down his approach into components that could be adapted for any fitness level.

Get out of bed while everyone else sleeps.

Willink shares an image of his digital wristwatch with his thousands of Twitter followers every morning, and it always reads about 4:30 a.m. It's a habit he picked up in the SEALs after noticing that the highest performers woke up the earliest.

As a civilian, it can be easy to have your entire day filled, and exercise usually doesn't get top priority. Willink's advice is simple: Start going to bed earlier, get your gym clothes ready before you go to sleep, get up while the rest of your coworkers are sleeping, and jump into your gym shorts.

Warm up.

You need to get your blood flowing and your muscles loosened up before you begin working out. Willink's typical warm-up is as follows:

• Hang on a pull-up bar or equivalent for 10 to 15 seconds.

• Hold a push-up position for 10 to 15 seconds.

• Get on the ground, face down, and stretch your hips, arching your head to ceiling to stretch abs.

• Raise hips to the sky and stretch your back (aka the downward dog pose in yoga).

• Do a slow squat and hold at bottom for 10 to 15 seconds.

• Do a burpee.

• Do a few jumping jacks.

• Do a pull-up, do a push-up, do a "dive-bomber push-up" (aka "chaturanga dandasana" in yoga), do a slow squat to the ground and up, do a burpee. End this cycle with five jumping jacks; repeat the cycle, now doing two repetitions of each exercise, each set followed by 10 jumping jacks; repeat the cycle, now doing three repetitions of each exercise, each set followed by 15 jumping jacks; repeat the cycle with this pattern until reaching five repetitions and 25 jumping jacks.

After warming up, consider doing very light movements of the exercises you're about to do, for the purpose of loosening up while also working on muscle memory.

Day 1: Pull.

Pulling exercises that Willink does are based on the standard pull-up motion. "And all you need to do pull-ups is a set of rings or a pull-up bar and you can handle that workout."

Willink is a fan of weighted kipping pull-ups, wherein you use a swinging motion with your shoulders and hips while adding weight to your body through a vest or other means, but it's important to first master standard pull-ups with various grips.

4 unmistakable signs it's time to leave your company

unhappy work office employee

A 2009 survey conducted by Mitchell Kusy and Elizabeth Holloway, authors of "Toxic Workplace! Managing Toxic Personalities and Their Systems of Power", found that 64% of people were currently working with someone they considered toxic, and 94% said they had worked with someone toxic during the course of their career.

And the worst news of all? Toxicity in the workplace spreads like a virus.

"Before you know it," explain the authors, "you have caught the 'infection' and find yourself acting in ways that complement or replicate the very behaviors that are making you angry, frustrated, and/or depressed."

One study estimates that toxic workplaces cost U.S. employers $23.8 billion annually in the form of absenteeism, health care, lost productivity, and more.

Based on many of the studies I've deciphered over the years, four classic examples of a toxic work environment really stand out.

SEE ALSO: 8 moments that can make or break your career

1. Gossip

Gossip in the workplace is common, and chances are you've engaged in it at one time or another. But relentless workplace gossip has damaging effects for both the individuals involved and the organization as a whole. Here are just a few examples of the cost of workplace gossip:

· Lost productivity and wasted time.

· Divisiveness grows among employees forced to "take sides." As a result, morale and trust are eroded.

· Rumors lead to an increase of anxiety, as people don't have a clear indication of what's true.

· Loyal employees and top performers may leave when gossip destroys the culture.

Watch for groups of disgruntled employees actively acting out their unhappiness. It's easy to spot them — they'll congregate in hush-hush circles around cubicles after meetings to put a negative spin on what just transpired.

They are quick to gossip, and even quicker to crucify leadership and company direction. They're basically corporate teenagers whose time with the company is about to expire, and who now rely on each other for strength and safety. Keep a close eye out for their whereabouts; they may go out of their way to befriend new hires to vilify someone or something and spread their cancer.

While your gossiping peers or co-workers won't admit it, they enjoy that feeling of power and should be dealt with swiftly.

2. Bullying

The effects of bullying in the workplace are huge and costly for businesses. Baird Brightman, a behavioral scientist, consultant, and writer, reports that "aggressiveness (both verbal and physical) undermines safety and requires people to divert resources from productive work into defensive operations such as fight and flight."

Babs Ryan, author of "America's Corporate Brain Drain," says, "Only 1 percent of bullies are fired; action is usually taken against the [bully's] target. Your only choice may be to leave as quickly as possible — especially if the company supports that bully repeatedly and has already exited several of the bully's targets."

In this age of knowledge workers, Greg Baer, author of in "Real Love in the Workplace," has a different spin, stating that bullying is often directed at those with less knowledge. "The more we know, the more we can win arguments, put people in their place, and feel powerful."

3. Micromanagement

In his book, "Eye of the Storm: How Mindful Leaders Can Transform Chaotic Workplaces," executive coach Ray Williams boils down toxic workplaces to the dysfunctional managers responsible for creating them.

For one, management focuses solely on what employees are doing wrong or on correcting problems, and rarely gives positive feedback for what is going right.

Second, Williams says there are too many levels of approval and management to get things done expediently and efficiently, and a singular focus on micromanaging employees where trust is absent.

Last, employees and departments are set up to compete internally, against one another, which is enforced by performance metrics that put the emphasis on individual performance rather than team performance.

As a result, Williams says people are considered objects or expenses rather than assets, and there is little concern for their happiness or well-being. As you may have imaged, they'll encounter high levels of stress, turnover, absenteeism, and burnout.

  • President Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe dined at the teppanyaki restaurant Ginza Ukai Tei during Trump's visit to Japan.
  • The restaurant's parent company saw its stock climb by as much as 7.3% on Monday after Trump's visit.
  • Ginza Ukai Tei's menu is inspired by French cuisine, and the restaurant features a dedicated dessert room.

President Donald Trump has been quick to point to the performance of the American economy, the stock market in particular, as the crowning achievement of his presidency thus far. While the extent to which he deserves credit for the economic indicators he cites is up for debate, his presence has had a tangible effect on at least one business, but it's not American.

During his trip to Japan, Trump dined with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at Ginza Ukai Tei, which specializes in teppanyaki, a style of Japanese cuisine in which chefs cook meat and vegetables on an iron griddle. The restaurant's parent company, Ukai Co., saw its stock climb as much as 7.3% on Monday after Trump's visit, according to Forbes.

Here's what it's like to eat at the restaurant.

What it's like to attend Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez's megachurch, which puts a hip veneer on conservative values

Justin and Selena

  • Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez were recently spotted spending a Sunday together, and attending a church service.
  • Bieber and Gomez both attend the megachurch Hillsong.
  • Hillsong is a fairly conservative Pentecostal church that retains a very hip aesthetic and appeals to many celebrities.
  • I attended a service at Hillsong's New York City chapter to see what it was like.

Shortly after Selena Gomez and The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) broke up, TMZ reported that Gomez and Justin Bieber spent the day together last Sunday. The pair reportedly grabbed breakfast and attended a church service together — sparking rumors that they're back together.

Bieber and Gomez are both congregants of the megachurch Hillsong, and reportedly used to frequent church services there when they were together. According to The Daily Beast, Bieber is known for bringing his love interests to services at Hillsong, making Bieber and Gomez's recent appearance at the church intriguing.

Hillsong, the mega-church that has been serving as the backdrop for Bieber and Gomez's possible rekindling, is worth paying attention to. It has chapters all around the world, and is known for its casual, concert-like approach to traditional church services.

Hillsong has attracted numerous A-listers like Vanessa Hudgens, Hailey Baldwin, and Kendall and Kylie Jenner, earning it a reputation as the celebrity church du jour.

Hillsong's NYC Pastor Carl Lentz told Business Insider that despite the church's celebrity following, Hillsong is just a "normal" church. And although Hillsong puts forth a savvy rebranding of Christianity, it is, at its heart, a conservative Pentecostal church.

Hillsong has openly opposed gay relationships and abortion in the past, and used to refer its members "struggling" with their sexuality to conversion therapy, according to The Daily Beast. While Hillsong stopped referring congregants to conversion therapy in 2011, some gay congregants have continued to feel unwelcome at the church.

So, how does a Pentecostal church with traditional Christian values rebrand the church experience?

Curious, I went to see what one of Hillsong's services was like, and attended a Sunday service at its NYC location.

Here's what it was like to attend a Hillsong Service:

SEE ALSO: Everything you need to know about Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber's on-and-off-again romance

Waiting to get into a Hillsong service is like waiting to get into a concert.

There were four different services to choose from on Sunday: 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 5 p.m., and 7 p.m. — I opted to attend the 12:30 p.m. service.

The service was held in NYC's Hammerstein Ballroom. The last time I had been to the Hammerstein Ballroom was for a Death Cab for Cutie concert 10 years ago, which should give you an idea of what events usually take place at the venue.

The long line to get into the theater, and the casual dress of the churchgoers, confused me upon arrival. I could not believe I was walking into a church service and not a concert. I had to ask the volunteers shepherding people into the building several times if I was at the right place, to which a friendly "Yup!" and a "Welcome!" followed every time.

Bags were meticulously checked prior to entry, metal detector wands were waved over every single body, and gum was vigilantly confiscated.

The feel of a Hillsong service is incredibly concert-like.

From the moment I walked into the Hammerstein Ballroom, I could hear music blaring.

As I made my way up to the second story balcony — all orchestra seating had been taken by the time I had arrived — I was overwhelmed by the number of people climbing up the stairs alongside me. (In 2014, it was estimated that 7,000 people were attending Hillsong's services every Sunday.)

On entering the theater itself, I was again taken aback by how concert-like the church was. It was honestly very impressive.

The church band was in the midst of performing a song when I entered the theater. The band looked and sounded like a pop band you might see at Panorama, or Coachella — only they were singing about God.

Hillsong has become increasingly perceived as a cool, celebrity, rock 'n roll church, and it's not hard to see why. But that's not how Pastor Lentz views the church, he said.

"I think the bigger picture of our church is just normal, faithful people who love Jesus, who want to help others with their lives. And sometimes they happen to be famous," Pastor Lentz told Business Insider.

Hillsong's promotional materials are ultra-chic.

A pamphlet about the post-church services, and an envelope for donations labeled 'HOME,' were placed on the arm rest of every seat.

On the back of the donation envelope, a number of ways to donate were listed: check, cash, credit card, online, or via the Hillsong App.

The design of the pamphlet and donation envelope were chic and modern, reminiscent of posh advertising campaigns for brands like Urban Outfitters and Paper Source.

The materials provided felt like another indicator of the modern vibe that Hillsong projects.

REVIEW: The new $500 Xbox One is incredibly powerful and far too expensive

$
0
0

The new, $500 Xbox One X is the most powerful home video game console ever made. With its beefy internals, the Xbox One X is more powerful than most home computers. It can power 4K and HDR gaming — the next major graphical step up after HD.

Xbox One X

It's also one of the the most expensive home game consoles ever made, only matched in price in recent years by the original Xbox One (which came with an expensive Kinect peripheral) and the original PlayStation 3.

It's not just you: $500 is a tremendously high asking price for a game console in 2017. The Nintendo Switch, which launched earlier this year, costs $300. The next best version of the Xbox One, the "S" model, costs $250. Even Sony's PlayStation 4 "Pro" model, which touts the ability to produce 4K and HDR games, costs $100 less than the Xbox One X at $400.

In short, it's a hard sell.

xbox one x

Whether it's worth your money is a more complicated question. Do you have an Xbox One already? Do you own a 4K/HDR-capable television? Do you consider $500 to be a major expense?

For me, however, it simply isn't. Here's why.

SEE ALSO: 6 reasons you should buy a $250 Xbox instead of the new $500 one

SEE ALSO: 6 reasons you should buy a Nintendo Switch instead of a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One this year

How I tested the Xbox One X:

I bought a 4K/HDR television about a month ago now. It was A Big Deal™, officially.

I read up on TVs at my favorite review-focused publications, like CNET and The Wirecutter. I spoke with my colleagues who know more about displays than I do (thanks Tony and Jeff!). I went back and forth over whether to wait for OLED TV prices to come down. I watched a bunch of videos on YouTube.

In the end, I went with the TCL P-series you see above. It's Wirecutter's highest-rated TV period. "It’s the best value we have ever seen in a TV," Wirecutter's Chris Heinonen said. "It produces images with more detail, brightness, and color than most TVs that cost hundreds more. Even when viewed side-by-side with TVs that cost 250 percent more, our viewing panel picked the TCL."

All of which is to say two things:

1. The TV I am using with the Xbox One X is high quality, highly rated, and tuned (yes, I did that too) specifically for 4K/HDR. I went from a 720p, 42-inch Vizio HD TV to this.

2. I probably spent too much time being neurotic about buying a TV, and should've just trusted the Wirecutter suggestion from the start.

If you're wondering what the Xbox One X looks like on a $3,500 Samsung OLED 4K TV, assuredly one of the excellent publications mentioned above can help you out. I'm the average consumer, and even then I kinda splashed out for this TV.

4K, HDR Blu-ray footage looks excellent.

Microsoft included a copy of "Planet Earth 2," a documentary I assumed was about the sequel to the planet we live on, but is actually just about regular old Earth 1.

Hilarious jokes aside, "Planet Earth 2" is considered a 4K/HDR showcase title. It's an "Ultra HD" Blu-ray used to demonstrate how dazzling this new, higher-resolution video format can be on the right set. It sets a standard for expectations of fidelity, in so many words, and I used it as such.

"Planet Earth 2" is also a delightfully charming British documentary that doubles as a highlights reel of nature's craziest s--t. As both an animal lover and a person who loves to be dazzled, I can indeed confirm that "Planet Earth 2" serves as a visual showcase. It is ridiculously impressive, because of how dazzling the image quality and range is in addition to the absurdity of its content. But this isn't a review of "Planet Earth 2" (if it were, I would totally suggest you check it out).

The Xbox One X is specifically intended to power 4K and HDR gaming. The ability to play 4K/HDR Blu-ray discs like "Planet Earth 2" is something that the standard Xbox One S is capable of, and it costs just $250.

To this end, the Xbox One X makes some games look very nice.

Two games that really stand out on the Xbox One X are "Gears of War 4" and "Forza Motorsport 7." Both have full 4K / HDR support, and both look excellent as a result.

More than just very pretty games, they look noticeably different on the Xbox One X — they look more like high-end PC games than home game console games. If you're looking for something to show off the new Xbox One X and your 4K/HDR TV, these are the games to do it with.

But that's just two big games, one of which is a racing simulation and the other is a year-old shooter. If you already played "Gears of War 4," and you're not a hardcore racing fan, there isn't much to play at launch.

To be all the way clear: There is no "big launch game" for the Xbox One X.

OF NOTE: When games are updated with 4K visuals, they sometimes swell in size to over 100 GB. "Gears of War 4,""Forza Motorsport 7," and "Halo 5: Guardians" come in at over 100 GB apiece. Apiece! That's absolutely gigantic, to be clear — significantly larger than the largest games.

  • America is full of cool small towns worth exploring.
  • Places like Durham, Boise, and Kansas City have cultural attractions to rival big cities like New York.

Sick of $400 hotel rooms, tourist-flooded attractions, and overpriced restaurants? Take a trip to one of America’s hippest small towns. Offering equal parts art, culture, and cool factor, towns like Boise, Kansas City, and others are giving XXL metropolises like NYC and LA a run for their money.

Here, 7 unexpectedly hip towns worth downsizing for.

Cincinnati, Ohio

Cincinnati has plenty of Old World charm — 19th-century Art Deco architecture, historic breweries, European-style neighborhoods. But the city has also seen a great cultural revival in the past couple of years, with buzzy storefronts, boutique hotels, standout restaurants and hip bars popping up. This transformation is no more apparent than in the city’s Over-the-Rhine district—the once epicenter of German immigrant society — where an $80 million revitalization has added cool new shops (we love the craft shop MiCA 12/V), local art galleries, and charming cafes (check out Iris BookCafé, which has a secret garden replete with sculptures).

Stop for a sweet bite at Holtman’s Donuts, a family-owned chain dating back to 1960, before heading to the Zaha Hadid-designed Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center, the first freestanding American museum designed by a woman (inside, you’ll find cutting-edge photography, film, and performance art). Another must-stop: The Video Archive, a Quentin Tarantino-themed speakeasy concealed behind a door in a storefront made to look like a VHS rental shop. Make your home base the art-filled 21C Museum Hotel, where there’s a free contemporary art gallery, a rooftop bar, and a see-and-be-seen restaurant.

Boise, Idaho

Boise has earned a reputation as a culinary hotspot in recent years — its third-wave coffee roasters, gourmet donut shops, and tasting-menu restaurants on par with what you’d find in Portland or Seattle. Start your eatathon off with the three-hour Boise Food Tour, which covers 1.5 miles of downtown and may include stops at Juniper, a farm-to fork restaurant with an emphasis on local ingredients; Guru Donut, which sells cake and vegan varieties inspired by a handwritten 1940s donut recipe; and Mai Thai, home to some of the best Asian food in the city.

The best ice scrapers for your car to keep your windshield clean

$

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

ice scraper 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • You can't drive a car with a windshield covered in ice. Fortunately, even a stubborn coating of ice is easy to clear with a bit of elbow grease and a great ice scraper. The Primary Automotive Rocky Mountain Ice Scraper is our top choice thanks to its simple but effective chisel and claw design that's built to last for years.

No one has ever woken up in the morning and said: "Boy, I hope there's a thick layer of ice encrusted on my windshield today!" But on far too many frigid winter mornings, scraping snow and ice off of your car is an unavoidable chore if you plan to leave the property without a pair of snowshoes on your feet. Fortunately, we're living in a golden age when it comes to ice scrapers and snow removal tools.

The best approach to dealing with an ice- and snow-covered car is to plan ahead and cover the windshield of your vehicle with a snow cover. These clever covers can be pulled off prior to your drive, whisking away the snow and preventing ice from adhering to the glass in the first place. Other fine approaches to dealing with winter weather are to get a job where you can work from home or to save up vacation days and hit the snooze alarm after a storm.

But unless you check the forecast without fail and said forecast is always accurate, allowing you to know precisely when to proactively deploy your snow cover, if you live in any state but Hawaii, there's a good chance you'll find snow and/or ice on your car at least a few times this winter.

If your region sees limited snowfall but plenty of cold mornings, then a simple ice scraper is probably all you need. For moderate snowfall, a scrape that also features a brush is a good idea, as these devices allow you to remove the top layer of snow and then chisel away at the ice coating the windows. For areas that see huge volumes of snow, you might need a larger snow broom type of device that's big enough to push around snow that has piled up many inches atop your car.

In some cases, you will probably need a two-pronged approach to your automotive snow removal process, a large broom, brush, or pushing device to remove the snow, and a smaller, hard-edged scraper to deal with the ice. Here's the good news: These things aren't very expensive.

I can attest to their low cost and to the need for a varied approach personally because while I'm hesitant to admit this, I... I own four different snow scrapers. Yes, that allows me to bring some personal expertise to the topic, but it also just seems gratuitous.

Although the Primary Automotive Rocky Mountain Ice Scraper is our top pick, for the reasons laid out in the slides below you should also consider the SnoBrum Original Snow Removal Tool, the Dragon Squama Ice Scraper Mitt, the AmazonBasics Snow Brush & Ice Scraper, and the Perfect Life Ideas 12-Volt Heated Ice Scraper.

The best ice scraper overall

Why you'll love it: The Primary Automotive Rocky Mountain Ice Scraper is sturdy, simple, and effective with a shorter design that allows you to apply maximum pressure while you break up that stubborn sheet of ice.

Scraping off of a windshield is not rocket science. You apply downward force, push the scraper forward (or pull it toward you, depending on your preferred technique) and repeat that until the ice is broken up and scraped away. For the side windows and side view mirrors, just apply a bit less force and ... that's pretty much all there is to it. With a bit of persistence, that ice doesn't stand a chance.

For a simple task, a simple tool is the best choice. And the Primary Automotive Rocky Mountain Ice Scraper is gloriously simple. It features a foam-covered grip that's the perfect size to fit in a gloved fist, it has a thick plastic ice chisel on one side of its head and a six-toothed ice claw on the other. The claw can help break up thick layers of ice, while the chisel lifts them off of the glass and lets you push chunks of loosened ice off of the vehicle.

A shorter handle would be too small for a solid grip. A longer handle could reduce your ability to precisely control the scraper. The plastic helps prevent accidental damage to the vehicle's paint job. The included waterproof storage bag keeps the inside of your car dry once the scraping is completed. That's the 4-1-1 here, folks: This is a compact, solid scraper that's ideal for most moderate winter climates.

One satisfied customer calls this scraper "sturdy" and says it "works very well ... and does not scratch the coating on the windshield." Another owner says it "feels about 10x more sturdy than any other ice scraper I've used." Overall, Amazon customers have given the Primary Automotive Rocky Mountain Ice Scraper a lofty rating of 4.7 stars.

In a review from WeAreTop10.com, a product tester said this scraper can "smash the tough ice in a few minutes" and praised the manufacturer's 10-year warranty. A GistGear.com roundup of the best ice scrapers ranked this one as the top pick, just like we did.

Pros: Rugged construction, dual scraping surfaces, compact and easy to store, great warranty

Cons: Hard to reach middle of large windshield on trucks, vans, or SUVs

The best tool for clearing deep snow off cars

Why you'll love it: The SnoBrum Original Snow Removal Tool will help you clear snowdrifts from your car without scratching glass, auto paint, or vinyl wraps.

First, for the record, the name of this product is indeed pronounced "snow broom," though based on the spelling, one could be forgiven for calling it "snob rum." You'll have to look elsewhere for an elitist liquor distilled from sugar cane extract, but if you're looking for a tool that can help you push mighty volumes of snow off your car, you're in the right place.

The SnoBrum Original Snow Removal Tool consists of a telescoping handle that can extend from 26-inches out to 46-inches in length, giving users of most heights (and arm lengths) easy access to the entirety of the windshield, hood, and even the roof of most vehicles.

What's at the business end of this extendable handle? A rectangular head measuring six- by 17-inches that's constructed from durable polyethylene foam. The foam head is sturdy enough not to bend or buckle even as you push against heavy snow load, yet the material is also gentle enough not to scratch the exterior of your car — that includes auto paint, window and windshield glass, and even those more delicate vehicle vinyl wraps.

Here's the catch: This is not a true ice scraper, per say, so for thick, stubborn layers of ice, you're going to need a different tool with a harder edge. For snow alone, the SnoBrum is ideal; for snow piled atop ice, remember that whole two-pronged approach we talked about earlier and invest in this tool and a scraper for the win.

With well over a thousand reviews logged, the SnoBrum scores a solid 4.3 out of five-star rating on Amazon. A user named Rosemary who faces bitter New England winters each year sums up this tool's advantages in her post, which reads in part: "The SnoBrum is awesome. A few sweeps and everything is clean and no scratches. The long adjustable handle makes it much easier to brush off the top of my very tall SUV ... and the price is great!"

A writer with MyCarNeedsThis.com calls the SnoBrum "simple but effective," adding that "for all those times when you wake up to snow packing your entire car, using the SnoBrum is an effective and quick way to move large amount of dry and wet snow."

Pros: Ideal for heavy snow load removal, gentle on paint, long pole provides great reach

Cons: Not sufficient for stubborn ice

The best ice scraper for extreme cold weather

Why you'll love it: The Dragon Squama Ice Scraper Mitt combines an ice scraper with a mitten to keep your hand warm while you remove ice from your windshield.

If it's cold enough out to see ice and snow clinging to the windows of your car, it's probably cold enough to chill your fingers. If the ambient air temperature and the wind chill weren't enough to freeze those digits, plunging them into the hoary frost adorning your vehicle will certainly do it. Sure, you can always wear gloves while using any old ice scraper, but an even simpler solution is to use an ice scraper with a mitten built in. Or, to be more precise, a mitt with a scraper built in, actually.

The Dragon Squama Ice Scraper Mitt comes with a classic simple plastic scraper with a 4.3-inch plastic chisel blade set into a solid handle. While effective, there's nothing all that remarkable about the ice scraper itself.

Of note here is how seamlessly the fan-shaped scraper slides into the included mitt, a mitt that has a soft, warm interior fleece lining and a quilted waterproof exterior. The mitt is generously sized to accommodate hands both large and small, and is also big enough for you to slide in a hand and forearm even while you're wearing a jacket and even with a pair of thinner gloves on. The mitt will not only keep your hand warm and dry, but it will also keep your clothing cleaner.

One Dragon Squama Ice Scraper Mitt owner sums it up adroitly when she says the tool "does a wonderful job at scraping all the snow or ice off my windshield, back windows and side windows ... My hand stays really warm, no matter how much scraping I do." Another customer is equally effusive, saying the scraper "is a great product that does exactly what it's supposed to."

The product review experts from Wiki.Ezvid.com give this scraper and mitt combo high marks, calling it a "high quality scraper" that "protects your car and your hand."

Pros: Keeps hand warm and safe, waterproof exterior, available in multiple colors
