Here's what happens with your stuff after you die

"In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes," Benjamin Franklin once wrote in a letter.

Unfortunately, those words are just as true today as they were in the 1700s.

Worse, sometimes the two come as a package deal.

After all, when someone dies, their family members must go through a lengthy series of tax, financial, and legal steps in order to sort out the affairs of the deceased.

With the help of Levenfeld Pearlstein trusts and estates associate Adam Garber, Business Insider put together a guide to many of the hurdles that surviving relatives will certainly face. Take a look below.

And just so we're being clear, this article is not a comprehensive list of what to do after someone's death. Contact your legal, financial, and tax adviser or advisers for advice catered to your specific situation. Also, some legal language was simplified for clarity.

It will be necessary to determine whether or not there is a will.

If there's a will, the executor will be named in the will. In lay-person English, their job is to administer the process by which assets are transferred, including paying the deceased's debts, filing their income-tax returns, and distributing any remaining assets according to the terms of the will.

If there's no will, the remaining assets pass to the decedent's heirs according to the state of law. The executor is appointed by the court.

Although Hollywood has glamorized the role of the executor of the will, one is not always needed.

Sometimes, an executor may not even be needed. The most obvious reason being if an asset is owned jointly with the right of survivorship. For example, if a couple's bank account was jointly owned, then when one spouse dies the second gets the account.

Furthermore, if there is a beneficiary designation, such as life insurance or an RIA, then in order to receive these assets the beneficiary needs to file a claim form.

Still, there are other reasons, such as if the deceased held all of their assets in a revocable living trust, or if the deceased's individual assets do not exceed a certain threshold — which depends on the state.

The executor or closest family member will need many copies of the death certificate.

It's important to get multiple copies of the death certificate. They will be necessary when notifying financial institutions, government agencies, insurance agencies, and others about the death.

Death certificates can be obtained at the funeral home. It's a good idea to obtain at least 10.

Employees reveal the 12 foods you should never order at your favorite restaurant chains

Fridays PROMO

  • A recent Reddit thread from current and former employees lists the worst foods to order at your favorite restaurant chains.
  • One Reddit user says never to order anything vegetarian from TGI Fridays because it's probably not actually meatless.
  • Another user says Panera's famous green tea is just sink water and syrup.

From Outback Steakhouse's Bloomin' Onion to Olive Garden's Fettuccine Alfredo, we all have our chain restaurant guilty pleasures.

But next time you're eating at your favorite spot, you might want to keep this unsettling Reddit thread in mind, in which someone asked "Restaurant chain workers, what dish should we not order and why?"

We curated the best (or worst, depending on your perspective) answers from alleged current and former chain restaurant employees, which detail kitchen horror stories ranging from moldy fruit at fro-yo chains to vegetarian dishes that aren't actually vegetarian. Where applicable, we contacted the restaurant chain to get a response to these accusations.

As always with internet discussions, take these answers with a grain of salt, as the identities of the accusers have not been verified.

Bourbon Street steak, Applebee's

"It's been a while since I worked there, but don't get a bourbon steak from Applebee's,"one Reddit user said. "It's like a black licorice-tasting steak... I remember one time we accidentally cooked an extra one, and we offered it to a waitress to eat. She took one bite and immediately spit it out. She kept asking us all night, 'what did you guys put on it?!' She was convinced that we had put something nasty on it to mess with her."

Iced green tea, Panera Bread

"The green tea that everyone loves so much is sink water and a bottle of syrup,"Reddit user UnimpressionableBot said. They also stated that none of the soups are made fresh, and that they all come in giant, frozen blocks.

We contacted Panera Bread for more information and this was their response:

"The green tea is naturally caffeine free green tea with flavors of passionfruit and papaya. It is made with green tea, sugar, and natural flavor (passionfruit and papaya extract). For consistency across our 2,100+ cafes, we do use a concentrate. Our cafes do mix fresh green tea throughout the day."

Ice from any restaurant

"[Avoid] ice almost everywhere,"one Reddit user said."Unless you've seen people take apart the ice machine and scrub the whole thing out, there is definitely mold in those."

Another user added:

"I used to work at Starbucks, and at my store we emptied and bleached the ice tubs every day and the ice machine once a week. I once picked up a shift at a store in the next town, and when I went to empty the ice tub, there was a long-dead gecko at the bottom."

A leading cognitive scientist reveals how language shapes your perception of gender, color, and justice

For cognitive scientist Lera Boroditsky, the fact the human brain can perceive other people's odd collection of noises as things called "words," which somehow possess meaning, is baffling in its own right.

But according to Boroditsky's research, things can get far weirder than that.

A professor at the University of California, San Diego, Boroditsky recently spoke at the TEDWomen conference in New Orleans. Her talk addressed the many ways humans can perceive the world based on how their given language interprets it.

The differences shown in her research are startling, ranging from varied perception of color, time, and size, to larger concepts like gender, intentions, and blame.

Here are some of the most fascinating findings from her work.

SEE ALSO: After watching over 100 TED talks, these are the insights that have stuck with me most

Time can flow in all different directions.

Consider the Kukutai, a tribe of aboriginal Australians who orient themselves and other objects in the world based on cardinal directions, such as north or south — not relative directions of up, down, left, or right, which are generally based on the body.

As a result, the Kukutai perceive time not as a left-to-right movement, as much of the world does, but as a west-east one. This means that if a person is facing north, time passes from left to right. But if they turn 180 degrees, to face south, now time passes from right to left.

What starts as a linguistic difference, Boroditsky says, quickly becomes a cognitive difference once a person tries to map their language system onto the physical world.

Inanimate objects take on human descriptions of gender.

In English, words carry no gender. But in other languages, like German and Spanish, words can be masculine or feminine.

Boroditsky's research has found that the way people often describe objects correlates with the object's given gender in a language.

In German, for instance, "bridge" carries a feminine pronoun, and Boroditsky said Germans are more likely to refer to bridges as "beautiful" or "elegant," both typically feminine traits. Spanish-speakers, meanwhile, will refer to bridges as "strong" or "sturdy," as the Spanish word is masculine.

What you call a color determines how much you notice it.

In English, people categorize the color blue one way: blue. There may be shades of blue, such as teal or turquoise, or light and dark blue, but they are all variants of the color blue.

Other cultures group colors differently, some with fewer names and some with more. Cultures with more categories are better at identifying distinct shades, Boroditsky's research has found.

Russians, for example, use the words goluboy and siniy to refer to lighter blues and darker blues, respectively. When Boroditsky has asked people to identify shades of blue and sort blue squares by lightness and darkness, brain scans show those who speak Russian are often much faster and better at the task than English-speakers.

Papa John's and other brands are grilling the NFL over national anthem protests — here's how all of the league's sponsors have responded

nfl national anthem protests new orleans saints

The NFL is facing backlash over players' protests during the national anthem from President Donald Trump, right-wing fans — and now, at least some of the league's sponsors.

Last week, Papa John's CEO and founder John Schnatter said that the chain was disappointed in NFL leadership's response to players' protests. According to Schnatter, declining ratings due to the protests had hurt Papa John's sales and caused the chain to reevaluate its sponsorship.

Papa John's is likely not alone in pressuring the NFL on the protests.

In late October, NFL spokesperson Joe Lockhart told Sports Business Journal that Papa John's was just one of the top sponsors that had raised concerns regarding the protests. And, according to Linda Yaccarino, the chairman of advertising sales at NBCUniversal: "Marketers have said, 'We will not be part of the NFL if you continue covering" the protests.

As backlash against Papa John's built, many wanted to know exactly which sponsors are pressuring the NFL and TV networks in how protests are handled.

"People who believe in justice and dignity want to know which brands are threatening such action," director Ava DuVernay tweeted on Saturday, with the hashtag "#namenames."

Business Insider reached out to 18 NFL sponsors about whether protests are impacting sales and if they are applying pressure to the league. Here are their responses.

If you have any information on sponsors' efforts to influence the NFL and networks' treatment of players' protests, email retail@businessinsider.com.

Papa John's

Papa John's public response to the NFL in an earnings call quickly inspired both backlash and support from customers.

"We are totally disappointed that the NFL and its leadership did not resolve the ongoing situation to the satisfaction of all parties long ago," CEO John Schnatter said in a call with investors. "This should have been nipped in the bud a year and a half ago."

Papa John's same-store sales missed expectations in the most recent quarter, due in part to the NFL's declining ratings, executives said. The company additionally lowered its North American same-store sales prediction for the year to 1.5%, down from 2-4%.

"Leadership starts at the top, and this is an example of poor leadership," Schnatter said.

Anheuser-Busch

"We have many long-term sports partnerships, including our NFL sponsorship, and while we may not agree on everything, we still believe in the power of sport to bring people together and overcome their differences," AB InBev said in a statement to Business Insider. "We have no plans to end our NFL sponsorship."

When AB InBev reported earnings in late October, the company did not mention NFL ratings or protests as a factor that impacted sales in the most recent quarter.

Here's the rest of the company's statement:

"At Anheuser-Busch we have a long heritage of supporting the institutions and values that have made America so strong.  That includes our armed forces and the national anthem as well as diversity, equality and freedom of speech.  We proudly employ over 1,100 military veterans and we work every day to create an inclusive environment for all of our employees.  Because only together can we achieve our dream of bringing people together for a better world.

The Anheuser-Busch phone line has always been available for consumer inquiries on a variety of topics, but we are not conducting a survey regarding our NFL sponsorship."

Dannon

Dannon is the official yogurt of the NFL.

"Dannon continues to monitor the situation carefully and have not made any changes to their advertising or related plans (current or future)," a spokesperson said in an email to Business Insider.

The company declined to comment further on whether or not it had been in touch with the NFL on protests.

In October, Dannon made headlines after cutting ties with Carolina Panthers player Cam Newton, following the quarterback's "sexist" comments.

The best slow cookers you can buy

$

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

slow cooker 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • Slow cookers are available in a large variety of sizes and price points, so you have a lot of choices, depending on your needs. But for an average-sized family looking for a bargain, we like the Crock-Pot 4-Quart Slow Cooker. It works great, it’s easy to operate, and it has a surprisingly low price point.

Lots of people like comfort foods, especially during the winter months — even if those comfort foods don’t always help out their waistlines. Unfortunately, most comfort foods can be time-consuming to cook and prepare, which means a lot of hassle for someone who spends eight-plus hours at a job. It’s tough to feel comforted when you’re spending several hours cooking after several hours working.

So you end up ordering a pizza, picking it up on the way home, and eating your comfort food out of a cheap box, which is not ideal.

If you’d prefer your comfort foods to be homemade, a slow cooker is the answer for a busy household. These kitchen appliances allow you to combine the ingredients in the morning before work, set the cook time and temperature on the slow cooker, and return home to a great-tasting, fully-completed meal. Now that’s ideal.

Things to look for in slow cookers

A slow cooker is a simple appliance. Although some models have a series of advanced features, the basic operation of a slow cooker involves setting a cooking temperature and cooking time and then leaving it alone for several hours. Here are some considerations for picking the right slow cooker for you.

  • Lid: Look for a lid that’s made of glass, Consumer Search advises, so you can see the food inside without having to lift the lid. Removing the lid allows heat to escape, causing the food to take longer to cook. Some lids have an insulating material around the edge that holds the lid in place more securely. Some lids can be buckled tightly to the crock, making it easier to transport your food without having the lid pop loose.
  • Shape: An oval shape is the most common option for slow cookers, says Jennifer’s Kitchen. However, you can find units that are shaped like rectangles or that are round as well. If you want to cook meats, an oval or rectangular slow cooker works best. Round slow cookers are a good choice for soups and sauces.
  • Size: Slow cookers are available in many different sizes. The capacity of the slow cooker is measured in quarts. You can pick models with capacities ranging from 1 quart to 10 quarts, although sizes of 4 quarts to 6 quarts represent the most common capacities.
  • Temperature settings: Most slow cookers will allow you to cook at a low, medium, or high temperature setting. You also may have a warm setting available. Most slow cookers will automatically switch to the warm setting after the cooking time has expired. Some advanced slow cookers will allow you to set an exact cooking temperature.
  • Washable: Slow cookers have a base unit that contains the heating element. The Kitchn says you’ll place the food inside a removable crock or other type of pot that fits inside base unit. This helps distribute the heat evenly throughout the crock and allows you to cook the food slowly. When it’s time to clean the unit, just place the crock into a dishwasher and wipe down the base unit.
  • Extra features: As Compact Appliance says, some slow cookers will offer multiple cooking features, such as doubling as a pressure cooker. Some can brown meats before slow cooking them. Others may have programmable cooking functions beyond the simple low or high temperature setting. Some allow for a Wi-Fi connection so you can track the cooking process through a smartphone app.

Although the Crock-Pot 4-Quart Slow Cooker is our top slow cooker pick, for various reasons laid out in the slides below, you should also consider The Fast Slow Pro 6-Quart from Breville, the Elite Platinum 8.5-Quart Slow Cooker, the Proctor Silex 1.5-Quart Slow Cooker, and the Crock-Pot Wemo Smart Wi-Fi-Enabled Slow Cooker.

The best slow cooker overall

Why you'll love it: The Crock-Pot 4-Quart Slow Cooker offers the perfect cooking capacity for a small family at a great price point.

Sometimes, a product is so synonymous with a product category is that its brand name becomes a preferred term used in everyday language. For example, in everyday language, an adhesive bandage becomes a Band-Aid, a facial tissue becomes a Kleenex, and a closed-cell extruded polystyrene foam product becomes Styrofoam. (That last one makes some sense, as “closed-cell extruded polystyrene foam” is a mouthful.)

And when it comes to slow cookers, a lot of people use the brand name Crock-Pot to describe all models of slow cookers. It’s understandable, as Crock-Pot slow cookers were first on the market and have dominated for a long time. The company continues to offer excellent quality slow cookers, including the Crock-Pot 4-Quart Slow Cooker, which provides a top-end performance level, size, and cost.

The 4-Quart Crock Pot deserves a lot of praise, according to the Food for Net review, because it works perfectly and is a great size for small families looking to create a meal. The Best Slow Cookerz says this Crock-Pot slow cooker offers an above average performance at a tremendous value.

The Crock-Pot 4-Quart Slow Cooker is extremely easy to use, offering only basic heat settings of low, medium, and high. One Amazon customer says this Crock-Pot requires little planning or thought to operate.

However, some Amazon customer reviewers say this Crock-Pot cooks food at a much higher temperature – even on the low setting – than previous Crock-Pots, so that's something to keep in mind.

Pros: Excellent price point, minimal number of settings makes it very easy to use, trusted brand name of Crock-Pot, better than expected performance considering the price you’ll pay, good for small families

Cons: Cooks hotter than some people expect, 4-quart capacity may be too small for some

Buy the Crock-Pot SCV400B 4-Quart Slow Cooker on Amazon for $14.96 (originally $29.99)

The best high-end slow cooker

Why you'll love it: It has a really high price, but The Fast Slow Pro 6-Quart from Breville successfully slow cooks and pressure cooks food in one easy-to-use appliance.

The Fast Slow Pro 6-Quart slow cooker from Breville carries a high price compared to other slow cookers, which means it won’t work for some people. But it justifies its big price tag by giving you a multitude of features so you can cook big meals however you want.

The Breville cooker works as both a pressure cooker and a traditional slow cooker, so yu can make just about anything with it. One Amazon reviewer likes The Fast Slow Pro’s versatility because it can perform the work of multiple appliances, saving storage space in the kitchen cabinet.

The Fast Slow Pro attempts to make slow cooking easy with eight different pre-set programmable cooking modes. There’s also a custom time and temperature setting that you can use for your favorite family recipe. Using the various settings is easy because of the large and clear LCD screen on the side of the unit.

One Amazon customer appreciates the high-quality build that all Breville appliances offer, and says this one is no exception.

As for downsides, Wired says the Breville unit is far too complex for what most people will want in a slow cooker, especially considering they’ll pay five to 10 times more for The Fast Slow Pro than they will for other slow cookers.

Pros: Offers strong pressure cooker and slow cooker functions, eight different slow cooker pre-set modes, excellent build quality, six quarts of capacity works well for many people, large LCD screen is easy to read

Cons: Extremely high price versus other slow cookers, may be too complex for some people

Buy The Fast Slow Pro 6-Quart from Breville on Amazon for $249.95

The best large slow cooker

Why you'll love it: If you need a huge slow cooker, the Elite Platinum 8.5-Quart Slow Cooker delivers big meals with an easy-to-use programmable timer.

Some families have no desire to eat leftovers. Others, like mine, ate leftovers regularly. If your family is one that doesn’t mind cooking big meals with some leftovers, the Elite Platinum 8.5-Quart Slow Cooker is built with you in mind.

This huge slow cooker has a capacity of 8.5 quarts, which means you’ll be able to cook huge meals for a big crowd. Or if you’re cooking for a small family, you can eat the same meal for a few extra nights after using this impressive slow cooker.

You can make use of three simple temperature settings with this cooker, or you can use some programmable settings. The Elite Platinum can even cook for up to 20 hours, according to the Kitchen Cookings review. One Amazon reviewer says the slow cooker is extremely easy to use and works well, and many others echo that praise.

In its review, the Review Lab appreciates the sharp-looking stainless steel finish with black trim on the Elite Platinum unit, which makes it a nice slow cooker for using at a party, because it will look good on your countertop.

However, one Amazon customer says the entire unit becomes extremely hot to the touch during use, which is problematic when young children are in the kitchen.

Pros: Slow cooker that’s very easy to use, programmable timer allows for up to 20 hours of cooking time, sharp looking stainless steel design, lid fits tightly to keep moisture inside for efficient operation, 8.5 quarts of capacity

Cons: May be too large for some families, entire unit becomes very hot during cooking

black friday

  • Black Friday is one of the busiest shopping days of the year, but it wasn't always such a widespread event.
  • Before it became about massive crowds and insane sales, the day after Thanksgiving was popular among shoppers in New York because of advertisements posted during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
  • Black Friday has since evolved into its own holiday — and people either love it or hate it.

Most people spend Thanksgiving at home, enjoying time with family and friends, indulging in a big meal, and maybe taking a nap. So, what's a better way to spend the day after a relaxing Thanksgiving than waking up at the crack of dawn to brave massive crowds at superstores? That's Black Friday, in a nutshell.

Today, Black Friday is one of the most popular shopping days of the year, but the unofficial shopping holiday dates back much farther than you might think. The day after Thanksgiving first became popular for shoppers in the late 1920s, when Macy's advertised holiday sales during its annual Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York. From there, the holiday evolved into the bargain hunter's dream that it is today.

Keep reading for the full history of Black Friday in the US.

Black Friday is arguably the most famous shopping day of the year in the US. Today, the day after Thanksgiving is known for massive crowds and insane deals, although it started out much smaller.

The first major post-Thanksgiving Day shopping advertisements came from Macy's department store during their annual Thanksgiving Day Parade, which began in 1924. The name "Black Friday" wouldn't come along until decades later.

By the 1930s, the day after Thanksgiving was a popular shopping day, although the Great Depression dramatically slowed the retail industry in general.

Russian S-400

India agreed to purchase five advanced S-400 Triumf missile-defense systems from Russia last month — the third US ally to do so since September.

Saudi Arabia also agreed to purchase the S-400 in early October, and Turkey finalized and made a deposit on a $2.5 billion deal for the S-400 in September, deepening tensions between Washington and Ankara.

Czech Gen. Petr Pavel, the chairman of NATO's Military Committee, recently said that Turkey's purchase of the S-400 may bar it from any integrated air-defense system with NATO allies.

The S-400 is a very capable missile-defense system, somewhat comparable to the US's MIM-104 Patriot, according to CSIS.

Here's what it can do.

The S-400 Triumf, which NATO calls the SA-21 Growler, is a fourth-generation long-range missile-defense system that Russia began developing in 1993.

It's also the successor to the S-200 and S-300 air-defense systems and became operational in 2007.

It's been said there are only two certainties in life: death and taxes.

I'd like to add a third: hipster neighborhoods. Every city has one, and Austria's capital, Vienna, is no exception.

Vienna's version is centered on Praterstrasse, a wide avenue in the city's Leopoldstadt neighborhood — a district historically home to Turkish and Balkan immigrants and Orthodox Jews.

While the area is full of trendy restaurants and cafes, art galleries, and boutiques, the neighborhood's crown jewel is a place that is hard to categorize.

Supersense is a cafe/recording studio/photo booth/printing press that is indebted to all things vintage and analog.

I stumbled across Supersense recently while traveling in Austria recently and found myself peeking through the shop's many curiosities for the better part of an afternoon.

Take a look inside.

Supersense is located on Praterstrasse in the Leopoldstadt neighborhood of Vienna, Austria.

It's right near the famous Prater amusement park.

When you walk in, you enter the cafe first. It serves high-end coffee roasted in a nearby region, as well as locally-sourced Austrian beer, wine, and butcher meats.

Coffee in the shop is made on a top-of-the-line Slayer espresso machine, which runs for $22,000 and is "built to brew for the truly obsessive," according to Bloomberg News.

The tables and chairs are, of course, made from reclaimed materials, and the bar is fashioned from refashioned American cabinets.

These doormen guard the residences of New York's wealthiest residents

  • New York City doormen guard the entrances to some of the city's most expensive residences.
  • Their jobs are notoriously private, and some are under strict NDAs that keep them quiet about the residents they guard.
  • Photographer Sam Golanski photographed the doormen of Manhattan's Upper East Side.

Many of New York's wealthiest people reside in multimillion-dollar condos on Park Avenue on the Upper East Side. There's 740 Park Avenue, where John D. Rockefeller, Blackstone founder Steve Schwarzman, and business tycoon David Koch have all lived. Just down the street at 730 Park Avenue, "billionaire bidding wars" have led to some sky-high home sales, including a penthouse that reportedly sold to hedge funder Daniel Benton for $39 million in 2012.

Guarding the entrance to these and other tony buildings along Park Avenue are the doormen who often live vastly different lives than those inside. A doorman's tasks can vary greatly, as they assist residents with everything from running errands, to loading up their cars, to calling cabs, and most importantly, providing security. As of 2014, unionized doormen in New York City made an average of $49,402 a year.

It was the unusual job of the doorman that photographer Sam Golanski was most interested in when he visited New York in 2015. He convinced them to pose briefly for his camera. "These guys are real people who need more attention. [They're] not pampered celebs wearing their Gucci bags and expensive watches," Golanski told Business Insider.

Ahead, see 11 doormen pose outside their posts.

Golanski noted that many of the doormen he spoke with have been working in the industry for years.

"In many cases it's a job for life," Golanski said. "One gentleman said he had been working as a doorman at the same building since [the] late '70s."

An important part of the job of a doorman is to keep residents' personal lives private. "They do witness a lot about resident life, but there is a secret agreement between them and the people they serve not to talk about it to outsiders," Golanski said.

Donald Trump president

US President Donald Trump's Twitter account went down for several minutes Thursday night.

• Twitter released a statement blaming the disruption on a departing employee.

• Plenty of people have quit their jobs in wild ways or devoted their last day at work to some pretty outlandish shenanigans.

Some people just like to go out with a bang.

This could be the reason why US President Donald Trump's controversial personal Twitter account was out of commission for a few minutes Thursday night. After some confusion, Twitter released a statement pointing a finger at an unnamed employee, who was apparently wrapping up their last day at work, Business Insider reported.

Some folks just can't resist delivering a parting shot before they walk out the door.

Here are some of the craziest things people got up to on their last day at work:

A Twitter employee shut down Donald Trump's account for 11 minutes

The US president's personal Twitter account went dark for 11 minutes Thursday night.

At first, the social media platform claimed the issue was an error on the part of one of its employees.

Then, Business Insider reported Twitter released a statement blaming a "customer support employee who did this on the employee's last day of work."

Trump's Twitter behavior has come under criticism for everything from launching attacks against individuals and entities to escalating tensions with North Korea.

Business Insider's Pamela Engel wrote a Quinnipiac poll found 59% of Americans think the president should delete his personal Twitter account.

Trump himself weighed in on the situation, tweeting: "My Twitter account was taken down for 11 minutes by a rogue employee. I guess the word must finally be getting out-and having an impact."

A JetBlue flight attendant cursed out an entire flight, activated the plane's emergency slide, and ran off

One flight attendant's 2010 resignation has gone down in history as one of the wildest quitting stories out there.

It all started with a quarrel between an airline passenger and flight attendant Steven Slater. The JetBlue employee alleged one passenger ignored his instructions to remain seated, and accidentally hit him in the head with her bag. His account was later disputed by passengers on the flight, however.

Slater got on the plane's speaker system and proceeded to launch an expletive-filled rant.

Then, Business Insider previously reported Slater escaped the plane by activating the emergency slide, ran off to his car, and drove back to his Queens home.

He was subsequently arrested. Ultimately, Slater was sentenced to one year of probation, according to CNN. NJ.com reported that he said was under stress pertaining to his mother's illness and his own HIV-related health issues, and that may have been a factor behind his outburst.

A TV reporter quit – and cursed — while live on air

Charlo Greene, a reporter for Local Anchorage, left her job to focus on her real passion: legalizing marijuana in Alaska.

And the way she went about resigning is one for the books.

According to the Huffington Post, after telling viewers she would be leaving to focus on "fighting for freedom and fairness" by cultivating the Alaska Cannabis Club, she added, "And as for this job, well, not that I have a choice but, f--- it, I quit."

Needless to say, the news anchor on duty looked more than a bit flabbergasted by her departure.

11 foods you think are healthy but actually aren't

Veggie burgers and Acai Bowls

  • INSIDER spoke with a panel of nutritionists about the common misconceptions behind "healthy" foods that are actually anything but.
  • Just because it says gluten-free on the label, does not make it good for you.
  • Granola bars are usually closer to a candy bar than a legitimate health food.

Not all junk food is created equal. Sometimes, it doesn't take the form of greasy potato chips or a fast food burger. Sometimes junk food is wrapped up in health buzzword covered packaging and injected with enough fruits and vegetables to make us think we're eating something nutritious.

INSIDER spoke with a panel of nutritionists and doctors who revealed the unhealthiest "health" foods out there that you should either drop from your diet completely, or quit kidding yourself about.

From granola bars to packaged veggie burgers and the super-trendy acai bowls, take note of these unhealthy foods in disguise.

SEE ALSO: 11 things people think are terrible for your diet that actually aren't

Granola bars

The ingredients in most granola bars should give you a hint about their true nutrition value: Chocolate, sugar, syrup, and sweetened granola.

"Nearly all granola brands add sugar and oil during the cooking process," Dr. Christopher Calapi, an osteopathic physician based on Long Island, told INSIDER.  "Some are loaded with seeds, nuts, and dried fruit, which up the fat content."

Yogurt

"Unless you are eating plain Greek yogurt, most commercially bought yogurts are loaded with sugar and contain very little protein," Los Angeles-based nutritionist Jennifer Cassetta said. "Even yogurts that claim to strengthen gut health will do the opposite because of the added sugars."

Wraps

Wraps might sound healthy, but in reality you're eating a lot more carbs (and calories!) thanks to tortillas' often enormous size when unwrapped than you would be with a regular whole grain sandwich.

Cassetta recommends staying away from them, especially since the wraps themselves are usually more processed than regular bread. Processed means added ingredients that you don't want, like sodium and trans fats.

13 things you need to know before traveling to Iceland

Gulfloss waterfall Iceland

If your Instagram feed looks like a giant ad for Iceland, you're not alone.

Yes, the island country is having a moment, and yes, everyone you know is going.

From volcanic deserts and steamy springs to icy glaciers and black sand beaches, the stunningly beautiful country is the perfect long weekend vacation thanks to cheap flights and its location five hours from the East Coast.

However there are a few things you should know before booking your trip.

Food is outrageously expensive.

Living in New York City, one of the most expensive cities in the world, I thought I had a handle on expensive food.

I was wrong.

On our first day in Iceland, we went to an average looking little café, only to spend $18 on a bagel with a dollop of cream cheese, some lox, and a leaf of lettuce. This is by no means abnormal in Iceland where, according to Lonely Planet, an average lunch will set you back around $30. An entree at a nicer restaurant will be around $55 or more.

The water smells gross but is totally drinkable.

The water in Iceland has a very sulfuric scent (think rotten eggs), but is totally drinkable, and tastes completely fine.

No one told us this, and we spent a very dehydrated evening in an Airbnb after all the shops had closed.

It can feel like being back in the States.

There are so many Americans everywhere that sometimes I forgot where I was.

Iceland has a population of only about 332,000, but sees around 1.8 million tourists a year.

Given those numbers, professor Edward Huijbens of the Icelandic Tourism Research Centre told the Financial Times that locals are "outnumbered by the annual tally of US visitors alone."

Tesla just bought an automation company to help it build the factory of the future — here's what we know about it (TSLA)

tesla fremont factory

  • Tesla said on Monday that it has acquired Perbix Machine Company, a factory automation company.
  • The automaker said that the company will help it build the factory of the future.
  • Perbix will continue to operate as part of Tesla in Minnesota and is looking to hire more talent in the area.

Tesla is ramping up investment in its manufacturing process amid Model 3 production problems.

The automaker and energy company said on Monday that it had acquired a factory automation company called Perbix Machine Company.

Tesla did not disclose terms of the deal, but it did say that it purchased the Minnesota-based company with cash and shares.

Here's what we know about the company.

Perbix specializes in designing and building highly automated manufacturing equipment and has been a supplier for Tesla for almost three years, according to a Tesla filing with the SEC.

Tesla purchased the company to help it further automate its factories.

"With the acquisition of Perbix, Tesla further advances its efforts to turn the factory itself into a product – to build the machine that makes the machine," Tesla said on its website.

Musk has been focused on turning Tesla's factories into a product itself for some time. This is because the more automated a factory is, the more efficient it becomes, thus helping to keep down the price of products.

"The biggest epiphany I've had this year is that what really matters is the machine that builds the machine, the factory,"Musk said during an interview with Y Combinator's Sam Altman in September 2016. "And that this is at least two orders of magnitude harder than the vehicle itself."

Tesla also purchased Grohmann Engineering, a German automation company, last November to help with this endeavor.

Musk has said that the manufacturing process for its Model 3 is the most automated system yet. However, the company has run into trouble with one of the assembly lines at the Gigafactory where it makes its batteries.

Musk said during a third-quarter earnings call last week that a third-party supplier who was responsible for the part of the assembly line with issues "dropped the ball," causing production problems.

Tesla said in a statement to the StarTribune, though, that Perbix "has executed flawlessly on a number of extremely complex automation projects."

A dock is the one accessory every MacBook Pro user should have — these are the 6 best options right now

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

ElgatoApple's latest take on the MacBook Pro is impressive, but not without its drawbacks.

It's faster and slimmer than previous generations, but only has one type of port: Thunderbolt 3.

If you've already invested in traditional USB accessories, or rely on SD cards or want to connect to external displays, you'll be out of luck unless you pick up a bunch of dongles.

Another option is to pick up a Thunderbolt 3 dock, which sacrifices one of your MacBook Pro's ports to give you access to a bunch of others. For years I would connect all of my peripherals to a Thunderbolt 2 dock, and attach that to my computer with a single cable. It's cleaner option than attaching a series of dongles that gives you the same result.

I've rounded up the current Thunderbolt 3 docks on the market, but there are a couple of things I'd like to mention right of the bat. The first is that connecting things to a dock, and then a computer introduces an extra step in the chain that could occasionally cause problems. For instance, you'll have to worry about the connection of an external hard drive to your dock and the dock's connection to your computer.

Second, if something happens to the dock — problems after a power surge for instance — it could impact both what's attached to the dock and your computer. I never had that happen during the years I used one on a daily basis, but it's something to consider. Also, if you're not using a surge protector yet, now is the ideal time to get one.

Finally, Thunderbolt 3 is a new standard and there are bound to be a couple of kinks left to work out. Make sure that you connect these docks to your computer using a Thunderbolt 3 cable. Although it uses the same physical connector as USB-C, they're different since the latter doesn't have nearly as much bandwidth.

If you can accept these trade-offs, you'll be in good shape.

Yes, these docks are expensive, but they're meant to ease the transition between everything that came before Thunderbolt 3 (and USB-C) and our hopefully single-port future. When you consider how much money it'd take to invest in all new equipment, you're actually catching a pretty big break.

I've broke down what makes each of the docks stand out below, but if there's a specific feature you're looking for, make sure to check out each one's product page.

OWC 13 Port Thunderbolt 3 Dock

I've just started testing this dock, but it's the follow-up to the one I used every day for years. OWC does its best to match Apple's aesthetics, so the aluminum body will look nice next to your computer on a desk.

Ports: 5 USB 3.1, 1 S/PDIF, 1 FireWire 800, 1 Ethernet, 2 Thunderbolt 3, 1 mini DisplayPort, 1 headphone jack and analog in port, 1 SD Card Reader.

OWC 13 Port Thunderbolt 3 Dock, $299, available at Amazon

CalDigit Thunderbolt 3 Docking Station

The inclusion of the eSATA ports makes CalDigit's dock ideal for people with a lot of redundant external storage. Everything else is pretty standard, but it's nice that you can also connect legacy accessories and have a wired network connection with the same dock.

Ports: 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports, 1 DisplayPort, 3 USB 3.1, 2 eSATA 6G, 1 Gigabit Ethernet, 1 3.5mm Audio in/out port.

CalDigit Thunderbolt 3 Docking Station, $299.99, available at Amazon

Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Express Dock HD

Another general purpose dock, this has fewer USB ports, but does include a full-sized DisplayPort, which is useful if you're using a high-end monitor.

Ports: 2 Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports, 3 USB-A 3.0 ports (1.5 A charging each), 1 DisplayPort, 1 Audio in/out port, 1 Audio out port, 1 Gigabit Ethernet port.

13 things you should never do on Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Dinner

Whether you love Thanksgiving or hate Thanksgiving, there are certain things you should never do.

From serving cranberry sauce from a can to talking about how much you're ruining your diet, we've rounded up 13 of the worst things you can do on Thanksgiving.

But ultimately do whatever you want. It's your holiday, too.

Say the food will be ready at 5 p.m. when it won't be ready until 7 p.m.

If you tell your guests to show up at 5 p.m., don't make them wait two hours for the food to finally be ready.

Be upfront on timing so everyone can snack properly beforehand and there will be a lower chance of overeating.

Bring someone who wasn't invited.

If they weren't invited to Thanksgiving, it was probably for a reason. Bringing someone who wasn't invited along will just make things awkward for everyone.

If you get dragged along as the uninvited guest, at least brush up on your small talk skills  you're going to need it.

Make Jell-O salad.

With all the delicious Thanksgiving desserts out there, why would you make a Jell-O salad? It seems to me like a terribly antiquated dish, and also has no business calling itself a salad — and the same can be said for ambrosia salad.

Instead, focus on the traditional foods that make this holiday one of our favorites and follow our advice for when to start prepping all your dishes.
