A look at the career of Olympic gold medalist Lindsey Vonn, who competed just hours after an 'excruciating' crash in 2006 and recently said she doesn't represent Trump

Lindsey Vonn ski skier skiing

• In the Winter Olympics and beyond, Lindsey Vonn is the face of alpine skiing for Americans.

• She began skiing at the age of three and competing at the age of six.

• Vonn won a gold medal in downhill skiing at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, but missed the subsequent Olympic Games in Sochi due to a major injury. She also placed eighth during the 2006 Turin Olympics, just 48 hours after a horrific crash.

• She'll be tackling the downhill, Super G, and combined events in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

For years, Lindsey Vonn has reigned as the queen of alpine skiing for many Americans. As one of the most visible skiers out there, she's become the face of the sport in the US.

And now, with Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang approaching, she may be preparing to close one chapter of her athletic career.

Reuters reported the upcoming games "are likely to be her last Winter Olympics."

And the 33-year-old competitor is looking to make this last one count.

"I want to win more than everyone else expects me to win,"she told CBC. "The biggest competitor will be just myself, trying to stay relaxed and stay focused, because I have been waiting for these Olympics for so long and I want to win so badly that I need to be able to keep it together."

Here's a look at the career that's gotten her to this point:

Vonn was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on October 18, 1984. Her father, Alan Kildow, is a lawyer and a former competitive skier. Her mother, Linda Krohn, is a lawyer who suffered a stroke while giving birth to Vonn. She grew up with two brothers and two sisters.

Vonn first put on skis when she was only three years old, and was competing by the age of six. Instructor Erich Sailer, who also trained her father, said she skied like a slow "turtle" in her first event, according to The Washington Post.

But her "turtle" phase didn't last long. Vonn told The Washington Post that over the years, Sailer was able to motivate her to go faster. "He just knew what button to push in order to make me ski faster. I think that's rare in coaches."

Trump's being slammed for this photo of his desk — here are past presidents' desks for comparison

Donald Trump Desk

  • US President Donald Trump was lambasted on social media after a photo in a White House handout showed him working during the government shutdown.
  • Online commenters pointed to Trump's stiff posture and empty desk.
  • Trump's desk has previously been busier, but his workspace lacks the family photos that previous presidents often showcased.

Your desk can shine a light on some of your work habits and personality traits.

So it's not surprising that a recent photo of US President Donald Trump spawned several reactions on social media.

The photo, in a White House handout, shows Trump sitting at the Oval Office's Resolute Desk, the surface of which is mostly clear, aside from a phone. Trump is leaning forward in his chair, apparently listening to a phone call, while wearing a white "Make America Great Again" hat.

Some Twitter users speculated about whether the president was getting much done at all, pointing to his stiff posture and empty desk.

Honor Sachs, a history professor at Western Carolina University who wrote "Home Rule: Households, Manhood, and National Expansion on the Eighteenth-Century Kentucky Frontier," compared Trump's workspace with that of previous presidents, including Barack Obama's tidy workspace and Teddy Roosevelt's paper-strewn desk.

trump desk tweet

Business Insider also found some photos of past president's desks — photos that, of course, aren't definitive portrayals of their typical workspaces. It's relatively easy to move objects around and clear things when it comes time to sign a bill or pose for a photo op.

But it's clear that Trump's White House workplace setup lacks one element that past presidents have prominently featured: family photographs.

Here's a look at some of the desks of previous US presidents.

In fairness, Trump's desk hasn't always appeared so clutter-free. Getty's Drew Angerer captured stacks of files during the president's contentious phone call in January 2017 with Australia's prime minister, Malcolm Turnbull.

But the president's desk is now barer than it was in his former spot in Trump Tower. That desk was piled high with papers and flanked by a row of trophies, photos, and bobblehead dolls on the windowsill.

In Barack Obama's White House, pictures of the president's family were prominently featured behind his desk.

Here's the list of 15 powerhouse European executives who had dinner with Trump at Davos

trump davos ceo dinner

  • President Donald Trump and members of his administration had dinner with the heads of 15 European companies during his trip to the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland.
  • They focused on deregulation policies in a roundtable modeled after CEO meetings Trump had in his first few months of office.
  • Trump's chief economic adviser Gary Cohn said the main purpose of the dinner is to encourage doing business in the US.

President Donald Trump arrived at the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, on Thursday to pitch to the global elite reasons America is great again.

He's the first US president in 20 years to attend the event.

Ahead of his speech on Friday, Trump had dinner with 15 heads of European companies across various industries, including the CEOs of Adidas, Deloitte, and Nestlé.

The dinner was modeled on the CEO roundtables of his first few months in office, which were later disbanded due to controversial remarks the president made about a violent white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Trump was joined by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielson, national security adviser Gen. H.R. McMaster, and National Economic Council director Gary Cohn.

Of the dinner's guests, Cohn told reporters in Davos, "The attendees run companies that have sizeable footprints in the United States. They have invested in our economy. We want them to continue to do so and encourage others to join them."

Cohn explained that Trump planned on using the dinner to explain that the US has a reinvigorated business environment due to his administration's new tax and deregulation policies.

We visited Apple and Microsoft's flagship stores in NYC — and the winner was obvious (AAPL, MSFT)

apple store nyc 5th ave

  • Apple and Microsoft's flagship New York City stores are less than half of a mile away from each other.
  • Apple provided a better retail experience due to its design instincts and a product strategy that emphasizes items that look similar and are easy to use.
  • But Microsoft's store had flashier products to try out, including virtual-reality headsets.

Apple has been the gold standard for retail since it ignored conventional wisdom and opened its first store in 2001. Since then, other companies have tried to match its first-class customer service and design instincts.

While Microsoft made its fortune on software, including Windows and Office, its expansion into hardware products like the Xbox and Surface tablets and laptops made the idea of a retail store a more realistic possibility. The company opened its first store in 2009.

I visited each company's flagship store on New York City's Fifth Avenue to see which offers the better retail experience.

Here's what I saw.

SEE ALSO: We went to one of Target's new urban stores and saw the company's vision for the future of retail

I started at the Apple store.

The store's usual location beneath its signature glass cube is being renovated, so the store has been temporarily moved to a building next to the construction area.

While the exterior looked different, the company's design principles and retail philosophy were intact inside the store.

While the stores have been tweaked since their debut in 2001, they continue to emphasize minimalism, interaction with Apple products, and personable employees.

The store's layout was even clearer from above.

25 actors who completely transformed themselves into real-life music legends

Musical legends have been brought to the big screen for decades, in biopics that range from transformative to mediocre. Finding actors who can accurately portray those artists often requires some musical training, studying of mannerisms, and physical transformations.

While some roles merely require learning some choreography and slight makeup, others are more intensive, like Jamie Foxx having his eyes glued shut to portray blind musician Ray Charles.

Here are 25 of the most notable transformations.

Jason Mitchell transformed into Eazy-E for "Straight Outta Compton."

Mitchell's transformation into the late N.W.A rapper Eazy-E for "Straight Outta Compton" blew critics away. The actor "consistently out-acts the rest of the performers," a New York Times review said. Mitchell, who has a similarly built frame to Eazy-E, gained weight, practiced a South Los Angeles accent, and learned how to rap for the role, according to the Los Angeles Times. Corey Hawkins became Dr. Dre and O'Shea Jackson Jr. transformed into his father, Ice Cube, for the film.

Tom Hiddleston played Hank Williams in "I Saw the Light."

English actor Hiddleston transformed into the folk singer, Southern drawl and all, for "I Saw the Light." Hiddleston stayed with singer-songwriter Rodney Crowell for five weeks and was coached in Williams' mannerisms and singing style.

Kristen Stewart became rocker Joan Jett for "The Runaways."

Jett and Stewart met before the movie was filmed so Stewart could learn about the rock star from the musician herself.

"The thing that came through to me was that it was important to her to capture it," Jett told Interview Magazine. "She really wanted to nail it, so I gave her all The Runaways music that I could find; I gave her tapes of me talking...And she really soaked it in. When we were hanging out together on set, it was like I had a mirror image. Even just sitting around, we'd do the same thing at the same time."

The best mascara you can buy for perfect lashes

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

mascara 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • If there’s one thing many women never leave home without, it’s mascara. It makes your eyes pop and brightens up your face in an instant. We tested dozens of mascaras to find the best, and Chanel Le Volume Mascara is our top choice because it delivers long, lush lashes that last all day.

A good mascara works wonders even if you have no other makeup on, but there is a dizzying array to choose from. We even found one brand that had 17 different mascaras! Whether you want volume, length, curl, or all three, when looking for the perfect mascara, you’ll need one that doesn’t run or clump and has staying power.

We tested dozens of mascaras, including drugstore brands, designers, cult classics, and all-natural options. We also looked at thousands of reviews from women who wear mascara and beauty experts to find the absolute best mascaras you can buy. These are our top picks:

Read on in the slides below to learn all about our favorite mascaras.

SEE ALSO: The best foundation you can buy for beautiful skin

The best mascara overall

Why you'll love it: Chanel Le Volume Mascara boosts lash volume, doesn't clump, and stays on all day to keep you looking gorgeous.

Our winner, Chanel Le Volume, lives up to its name, adding plenty of lash-boosting volume without clumping, which is often a problem with volumizing mascaras. It has a spiky brush with a blend of short and long bristles that are designed to separate and lift.

The creamy formula plumps lashes, and in our tests, we really noticed our lashes looked longer and curled upward, too, making eyes pop. All you need is one coat for daytime or two for a night out. The color is rich and bold, plus, it coats on your lashes easily. In case you want it, this mascara comes in a waterproof formula, too.

Celebrity makeup artists, Kara Yoshimoto Bua and Rachel Goodwin, swear by this mascara and it is one of Elle’s top mascaras. It also gets rave reviews from women who wear it every day.

One buyer who wrote a review on Macy’s website said she had compliments from her co-workers the first day she wore it. One reviewer did say she experienced a little clumping, but it's easy enough to solve the issue.

Pros: Easy to apply, adds volume, length and curl, long-wearing, no flaking or smudging

Cons: High price tag

Buy Chanel le Volume Mascara at Nordstrom for $32

The best drugstore mascara

Why you'll love it: L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara adds volume, length, and curl for an effect that rivals many high-end mascaras.

Many people swear by drugstore mascaras, and this bestseller certainly has a cult following. L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise outdoes many more expensive types of mascaras and, in fact, is often compared to Too Faced’s best-selling Better than Sex mascara.

Our drugstore favorite comes in an all-pink tube and is easy to apply, thanks to the wavy brush, which has more than 200 bristles. We were impressed with the volume and length it created with our lashes.

It also feathers lashes, really opening up the eyes. For a more dramatic look, just add a second coat. We didn’t see clumping or flaking, and it stays on for hours. The formula is washable, although we found it betterto use makeup remover when you take it off.

L'Oreal's mascara was even named Harpers Bazaar's Best Mascara of all time. It gets rave reviews on Influenster, with one customer saying, “it is amazing for separating lashes and really getting mascara on to each and every single one, creating a very full looking lash." It also comes in a waterproof formula.

Pros: Volumizes, lengthens, curls, washable

Cons:  Possibility of some clumping

Buy L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise in Black from Target for $8.99

The best volumizing mascara

Why you'll love it: For bold lashes that last and last, Lancôme’s Monsieur Big should be your go-to mascara.

It’s hard not to fall in love with this fabulous mascara. Lancôme’s Monsieur Big claims to deliver 12 times more volume with 24-hour wear, and in our tests, it seemed to deliver. It certainly lasted all day and made our lashes look thick.

The wavy brush is easy to use and the soft bristles won't scratch your eyelids. The creamy formula contains polymers that pack lashes full of thickness, length, and jet black color. It opens up your eyes and extra coats create insane volume as well as length, for a false lash effect that we loved. It also looks as good after a night out as it does when you first put it on.

This mascara gets consistently high ratings from beauty experts and was a winner in Allure’s Best of Beauty Awards in 2017. It has 10,000 likes on Sephora, with one buyer saying it was her new Holy Grail mascara.

Pros: Easy to apply, adds exceptional volume and length, very long-wearing, doesn’t smudge

Cons: Can bedifficult to remove

Buy Lancôme’s Monsieur Big from Sephora for $25

The healthiest restaurant meals you can order if you're trying to lose weight, according to nutritionists

  • Going out to eat every night can be unhealthy, but if you know where to find the healthy options, you can still maintain your weight loss goals.
  • Whole-wheat pasta is one of the healthiest choices for you at carb-loaded Italian restaurants.
  • Although Chinese food might not be the first cuisine that comes to mind for diet options, mu shu chicken is packed with protein and veggies.

If you're trying to lose weight, cooking at home is an easy way to control calories. Consider that a whopping 92% of meals from chain and local restaurants have more calories than the average person should eat in a single meal, according to a "Journal of the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics" study. But never going out for a meal isn't really an option, either.

You can stay on the straight and narrow with help from nutrition and diet experts: We asked them to tell us about their favorite weight loss-friendly restaurant meals. From pasta with veggies and shrimp to a Chinese dish that only sounds indulgent, and everything in between, these are their most mouth-watering recommendations. (And while you're thinking about your diet, don't miss these six foods skinny people eat all the time.)

At Zoës Kitchen

Zoës Kitchen is a Mediterranean chain restaurant with locations across the nation. While they have many healthy selections, Jim White, RD, owner of Jim White Fitness & Nutrition Studios is a fan of the Salmon Kabobs and suggests pairing them with a side of seasonal fruit, steamed veggies, or wheat pita chips.

"This meal is relatively low in sodium, high in protein, has heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids from the salmon, and is filling without being overly caloric," White says. "This makes it an ideal option for people trying to eat healthier or lose weight." (Beyond eating well, here are some more things skinny people do every day.)

At a farm-to-table restaurant

"I'm a fan of farm-to-table restaurants because they get their food from local sources which means you're getting more nutrients in every bite," says Miriam Jacobson, MS, RD, CNS, CDN, functional medicine dietitian and co-founder of Our Health Tribe. "While selections will change seasonally, a healthy meal might consist of a vegetable-based soup, some kind of salad, and an entrée that combines a roasted vegetable with a lean meat like pasture raised chicken breast or grass-fed steak."

Meals rich in vegetables contain fiber, a nutrient that can aid weight loss efforts, and the protein from the meat fuels muscle recovery which is key for those who are hitting the gym hard to make the scale budge. And next time you're whipping up a salad at home, consider trying one of these 12 delicious kale salad recipes you won't be able to turn down.

At an Italian restaurant

Carb lovers, rejoice! Eating pasta and losing weight are not mutually exclusive. In fact, Elisa Zied, MS, CDN, author of "Younger Next Week," suggests whole wheat pasta topped with veggies and a protein next time you're ordering at an Italian restaurant. "I recommend fiber-rich whole wheat pasta with six jumbo shrimp, sautéed tomatoes, and a light sprinkling of feta cheese, which adds great flavor and a little calcium. Even if it's not on the menu, any Italian restaurant should be able to create something similar to this."

Zied stresses that the key to eating pasta while trying to slim down is portion control. "Restaurants tend to give you more food than you need, so a good rule of thumb is to share or eat a half-portion and bring the rest home for a meal the next day." Check out these portion control tips if you need inspiration.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Tom Brady's teammates on his first Super Bowl team

Tom Brady

Tom Brady is now 40 years old and in his 18th season as a quarterback for the New England Patriots. He is also about to play for his sixth Super Bowl ring.

It has been 17 years since Brady's first Super Bowl. That season, Brady replaced the injured Drew Bledsoe, beat the Raiders in the "tuck rule" game, and helped the Patriots beat the heavily favored St. Louis Rams in the Super Bowl.

The only other constants between the 2001 Patriots and this season's team is head coach Bill Belichick and a couple of assistant coaches. Most of Brady's teammates from that season have now moved on. That group now includes television analysts, one NFL head coach, a professional poker player, and amazingly, a kicker who is still playing.

Below we look back at Brady's first Super Bowl teammates and see what they are up to today.

Seymour spent eight seasons with the Patriots and last appeared in the NFL in 2012 with the Raiders. He is now a professional poker player and finished 18th in one WPT event.

17 years later, Brady is now widely considered the GOAT in the NFL and is entering the conversation for one of the greatest athletes ever in North American sports.

Drew Bledsoe was drafted by the Patriots as the first pick in the 1993 draft and served as their starting quarterback for nine seasons. He signed a then-record 10-year, $103 million contract extension in 2001, nine months after the Patriots drafted Tom Brady, but he lost his job to Brady early in the next season when he ruptured a blood vessel in his chest. He returned from the injury but did not regain his starting job in New England.

A neuroscientist says you might be luckier than you think — here's how to find out

el gordo lottery winners

Some days, it feels like nothing goes your way. Others, the sun is always shining.

Neuroscientist Moran Cerf has been studying decision-making for over a decade, and his research has shown him that far more people are in the second camp of people than the first.

Along the way, he's developed a tested method that helps him appreciate all the times he is lucky.

Here's how he does it.

SEE ALSO: A neuroscientist who studies decision-making reveals the most important choice you can make

Become aware of your "negativity bias."

Cerf's research has found that free choice is a terrible predictor for happiness. Humans fall victim to all sorts of cognitive biases that cloud their impression of their lives for the worse.

One of those is the negativity bias. It causes people to remember bad or scary events, such as news stories of plane crashes, more vividly than pleasant ones.

"Our brains are geared toward thinking about negativity and scary things, because that's how the brain kind of learns," Cerf told Business Insider.

Start to collect a picture of what luck looks like.

Keep a running list of times luck was (and was not) on your side.

More often than not, Cerf has found, the times you got lucky will outnumber the unlucky moments.

Keeping a log of when luck goes your way, such as when you parked illegally and didn't get a ticket, can help you overcome that negativity bias.

Gather more data to get a full picture of your luckiness.

At the end of the month or year, you can tally up the lucky versus unlucky moments to know whether life skewed in your favor.

"Most of us are lucky," Cerf said. "That's the point."

Seeing the data can show people that their train may not experience as many delays as they think, rush-hour traffic might not be so bad, and they don't often forget their umbrella on rainy days.

It seems like White House officials have made a habit of controlling Trump through threats of resignation

donald trump fired

  • White House counsel Don McGahn reportedly threatened to quit if President Donald Trump fired special counsel Robert Mueller.
  • He's the latest member of the Trump administration to threaten resignation.
  • Here's who else has made similar threats.

When President Donald Trump reportedly ordered the firing of the special counsel Robert Mueller, White House counsel Don McGahn threatened to quit. Trump eventually backed off and Mueller stayed on the job.

McGahn is the latest member of the White House to threaten to quit over a move he believed would be disastrous for the president. Other officials have done the same, apparently as a way to convince Trump to back down on certain decisions they deem catastrophic.

"I think Trump acts on his instincts — as a businessman you just fire people who aren't loyal or give you issues," a source close to the White House told BuzzFeed News. "I think when Kelly and legal counsel explain to him how bad this would play out and harm his presidency, he yields."

Here's everyone who has reportedly threatened to quit:

DON'T MISS: FBI director reportedly threatened to resign after being pressured to fire his deputy

John Kelly

After Trump fired FBI Director James Comey in May, chief of staff John Kelly reportedly threatened to resign. Comey and Kelly reportedly had a professional relationship and a "deep mutual respect" for each other.

Earlier this month, The New York Times reported that Kelly often threatened to quit as leverage over Trump to get him to follow orders. It was one of the few weapons Kelly had in his arsenal, a presidential adviser told The Times.

Kelly has repeatedly denied any intention to quit.

"Although I read it all the time, pretty consistently, I'm not quitting today,"he said as rumors swirled that he was itching to leave the White House.

Christopher Wray

FBI Director Christopher Wray, whom Trump selected to replace James Comey, reportedly threatened to resign after being pressured by Attorney General Jeff Sessions to fire Deputy Director Andrew McCabe.

Trump had previously expressed disapproval of McCabe and suggested that he was biased against him.

"Problem is that the acting head of the FBI & the person in charge of the Hillary investigation, Andrew McCabe, got $700,000 from H for wife!" Trump tweeted in July, referring to the FBI's investigation into former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server while she was secretary of state.

Trump's attacks on McCabe didn't end there. In a subsequent tweet, he called the former acting director a "Comey friend" who should've been replaced.

Rex Tillerson

Following Trump's controversial speech to the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) in July, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was close to resigning from his post, NBC reported at the time.

Tillerson had reportedly become incensed because Trump injected politics into what many thought should have been a neutral speech to young Boy Scouts. Tillerson was the national president of the BSA from 2010 to 2012.

Trump's speech came just days after Tillerson reportedly called Trump "a moron" during a meeting with administration officials. He has consistently denied the report.

Russian Turkish Bathhouse New York City

  • Russian and Turkish Baths is a health club in New York City's East Village neighborhood.
  • Open since 1892, the bathhouse serves as a meeting place for the city's Russian and Jewish enclaves — and a hotspot for celebrities, millennials, businessmen, and tourists.
  • For over 30 years, the Baths have been owned by two Russian émigrés who manage the facilities on alternating weeks.

Step through the tenement door on 10th Street in Manhattan's East Village, and you'd be forgiven for thinking you'd walked through a time warp.

Open since 1892, the Russian and Turkish Baths is about as old New York as it gets. The institution has survived wave after wave of tumultuous change in the city, it's grimy come-whoever spirit intact.

The baths have played host to New York royalty, including actor Robert De Niro and the late singer Frank Sinatra. More often, it has been a meeting place for the city's Russian and Jewish enclaves. Lately, it has attracted a new crowd of adventurous tourists and Brooklyn millennials.

Since 1985, the bathhouse has been owned by two Russian émigrés, Boris Tuberman and David Shapiro, who run the business under an unusual arrangement. After the two men realized they hated running a business together, they decided to split the baths. Each month is now split between "Boris weeks" and "David weeks." Besides sharing utilities and repair costs, the businesses operate separately.

Though the clientele has changed over the years, the bathhouse remains one of the few, true melting pots in the city. A day pass to the Baths costs $48, while a three-month pass has a price tag of $600.

We visited the baths on a recent Monday afternoon — on a "David week"— to see what we could find in the steam.

Originally called the Tenth Street Baths, the bathhouse has been open in Manhattan's East Village since 1892. In the early 1900s, the baths were a popular place for the Lower East Side's immigrant population. Few apartments had bathtubs at the time.

Tuberman and Shapiro purchased the building and the business in 1985 for $850,000. Shapiro's son Dmitry, who now runs his father's side of the business, said the two were looking for a job where they could be their own bosses. Shapiro had spent the previous five years as a taxi driver.

The baths weren't exactly an attractive buy at the time. The AIDs crisis was in full swing and the city was trying to shut down all the bathhouses, as many had become central to the gay swinging scene.

The Russian and Turkish Baths were a mess when Shapiro and Tuberman bought them. The building was falling apart, the roof was caving in, and there were hardly any clients left. But the men liked the fact that they were the only baths in town, Shapiro said.

"Everybody thought we were stupid," the elder Shapiro told The Wall Street Journal in 1997.

Tuberman and Shapiro quickly found they had completely different philosophies on how to run a business. Within a few years, they decided to split the business and alternate weeks.

The split business produces some complications. Shortly after I arrived at the Baths, a young woman came in with a pass for a "Boris week." Shapiro had to explain to the confused woman that she would either need to buy another pass or come the following week.

He said that happens from time to time and most people are understanding.

Because of their unusual management schedule, Shapiro hauls in his computers, his point-of-sale system, his merchandise, and his muds and scrubs, every other week.

Shapiro has also put the Baths on Groupon and other e-commerce sites to generate more business. But if someone tries to use a Groupon on a "Boris week," they're out of luck.

Tuberman still operates with pen and paper and refuses to do any promotion.

"It's a very bizarre way to run a business. I don't think anyone else would do it," Shapiro said.

Vancouver housing

The world's most expensive cities to live in have been revealed in a major survey of almost 300 population hubs.

The destinations are named in the 14th Annual Demographia International Housing Affordability Survey: 2018.

It analysed 293 metropolitan housing markets in nine countries — Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, the UK, and the US — in the third quarter of 2017.

Using the "median multiple" approach, which involves taking an area's median house price and dividing it by — the median household income. So if the aver gae income was $50,000 and the average house cost $250,000, the median multiple would be 5.

The method found 26 "severely unaffordable" locations, with the worst offenders in the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and China.

The survey also looked at all cities, non-major markets included — which is the data we've compiled below.

Bali, Indonesia

With dreary weather and low moods, planning a holiday can be the perfect January pick-me-up — especially for couples considering a Valentine's Day getaway.

The Post Office Holiday Money Report has revealed the cheapest holiday hotspots in the world in 2018 that make for the perfect holiday for two.

To produce the ranking, the company looked at the cost of the following items in 42 destinations around the world: a three-course meal for two with a bottle of house wine, cup of coffee, bottle of local beer, can of Coca-Cola, glass of wine, bottle of still water, suncream, and insect repellent.

It doesn't include how much it costs to get somewhere, or the price of accommodation.

The costs were compiled with the help of national and regional tourist boards and specialist tour operators. And there's good news — in more than 40% of the places on the list, the costs of items like meals and drinks are less than they were a year ago.

From Bali to Budapest, scroll down for a look at the cheapest holiday destinations in the world for couples, ranked in ascending order by the total cost of key holiday essentials:

GOLDMAN SACHS: These 14 stocks will crush the market as wages rise

  • Companies that have the lowest labor costs are poised to outperform, according to Goldman Sachs.
  • The firm has identified 14 companies that are set to beat the market as wages increase.

With extra cash on hand thanks to the GOP tax bill, companies are starting to sweeten the pot for their workers.

Home Depot became the latest company to do so on Thursday, announcing that it would give hourly associates in the US a one-time cash bonus of up to $1,000. They joined JPMorgan, American Airlines, AT&T, Boeing, Comcast, and Visa, who have all either hiked pay or issued bonuses in the past few weeks.

This is great news for employees, but it's a much more complicated situation for companies — particularly those with the highest labor costs. For firms that already pay high wages relative to the rest of the market, the mounting pressure to increase employee pay may end up hurting their bottom lines in the long run.

So what's an investor to do? Look for companies with low labor costs, of course. And lucky for you, Goldman Sachs maintains an index of such firms.

Without further ado, here are 14 stocks Goldman says will outperform as labor costs rise. Note that this is a collection of the companies from within Goldman's 49-stock "low labor cost" basket, and for whom implied labor costs are either 0% or 1% of revenue.

Lottery tickets

Many lottery players purchase tickets each day with the hope of striking big, but games of chance are preventing you from having more money, not less. You are expected to lose money if you play the lottery and there is no guarantee you will even keep winnings.

Cigarettes

In New York City, someone who smokes one pack of cigarettes a day burns up over $5,000 a year. Smoking can also be a huge cost to your health — medical bills can rack up from the dirty habit even tobacco companies are quitting.

Water bottles

As Americans became more health conscious and started drinking less soda, beverage companies needed a new plan. It worked as Americans now drink more bottled water than soda, even though it costs $1.22 per gallon for a commodity that can be accessed for next to nothing.

How to use air travel to meet influential people and boost your career, according to a tech exec who was once a flight attendant

$

Ryan Bonnici

  • Ryan Bonnici started his career as a flight attendent.
  • A meeting with a Microsoft exec on a flight forever changed his career and his life.
  • That meeting led to a job at Microsoft which led to a career in tech.
  • He's now an executive who flies first-class and he's mastered the art of turning an airplane trip into a way to meet influential people.

Ryan Bonnici spends about 60% of his time traveling as the CMO of startup G2 Crowd, he tells Business Insider. He has a fabulous, high-paying career in tech and it all happened because of a chance encounter with a Microsoft exec on a flight when he was a kid in college working as a flight attendant.

That meeting, plus his years as a flight attendant along with his current lifestyle which has him flying all over the world, has given Bonnici a unique view about business trips.

For him, airplane trips are not something to be endured while traveling to the important business meeting. They're also not to be dedicated to head-down work on the computer. They are an incredible resource for meeting powerful people that could, in one fell swoop, help you advance your career.

Bonnici knows this first hand. He became a flight attendant for Qantas when he was 19, putting his business degree on the part-time back burner so he could travel the world.

One day, a senior executive from Microsoft came aboard his flight. They talked, hit it off and she encouraged him to apply to a marketing leadership program at Microsoft and gave him tips on how to get through a grueling application process that involved beating out thousands of applicants. Low and behold, he was one of about 9 people to get the job.

He's been climbing the tech career ladder ever since: ExactTarget, Salesforce, HubSpot, and now he's an executive — the chief marketing officer — at G2 Crowd, a fast-growing startup that helps business find and rate software suppliers. (G2 Crowd was one of Business Insider's 51 enterprise startups to bet your career on in 2018).

Since his chance encounter with the Microsoft exec, Bonnicih has learned to always treat every flight as an opportunity for business networking. Over the years, he's met clients on airplanes that brought in millions of dollars of business, founded partnerships, and even discovered a career coach.

"I’ve learned a few tactics obviously," he said. Here are his top pro tips:

You don't have to fly business class to use these tips. "I fly all classes," he says.

But do try and travel first-class or business class as much as possible, as it will increase your odds of meeting business execs and others who can become valuable contacts. "If someone is traveling up there, they are more likely successful."

If you must fly coach, book a seat as close to the front of the plane as possible. That's where frequent flyers — which tend to be business people — often fly when they get bumped from their first-class upgrade. Booking early helps you obtain those up-front seats.
