The next Air Force One will cost $3.9 billion — here's what makes the presidential plane an incomparable flying fortress

Air Force One

  • The security features on Air Force One are extensive.
  • The body of the plane can withstand a nuclear blast.
  • Many of these features are hidden to the untrained eye.

Embellished with the American flag, the presidential seal, and the words "United States of America," the world's most famous plane is as tall as a six-story building and gives an undeniable authoritative presence wherever it flies.

President Donald Trump reportedly reached an informal deal with Boeing to cap the price for two new Air Force Ones at $3.9 billion. In a statement, Boeing said that Trumphad "negotiated a good deal."

The current three-leveled "flying Oval Office" is a custom Boeing 747-200B that has 4,000 square feet of interior floor space, including a conference room, dining room, private quarters for the president, offices for senior staff members, a medical operating room (a doctor flies on every flight), press area, two food-preparation galleys that can provide 100 meals, and multifrequency radios for air-to-air and air-to-ground communication.

Former President Barack Obama's Air Force One cost taxpayers $206,337 every hour it was in flight, according to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) letter obtained by Judicial Watch.

Wildly popular mattress-in-a-box startup Casper just opened its first store in NYC — here's why it thinks it can defy Mattress Firm's curse

Casper

  • Mattress startup Casper has opened its first permanent store in New York.
  • The store is designed to be a testing ground for the company to trial new products and see how customers interact with them.
  • Casper is a digitally native brand that launched in 2014. The company's total revenue since inception reached more than $600 million in 2017, and it counts Target and 50 Cent among its investors.

Casper wants to create the Disneyland of mattress shopping.

Since launching online in 2014, mattress startup Casper has become one of the biggest disruptors in the industry. Customers can order the product online, trial it for 100 days, and return it if they don't like it.

In the past few years, the company has grown rapidly – total sales reached more than $600 million in 2017, and it has diversified from its core product, the mattress, to sell all things sleep-related, from sheets and pillowcases to dog beds and calming tea.

It has also expanded its mattress range to offer more pieces — a queen-sized mattress, for example, can cost from $600 for a standard mattress up to $1,850 for a more technical piece.

50 Cent is an investor, as is Target, which now stocks Casper products in more than 1,000 of its stores across the US.

After running a series of pop-ups around the country, Casper opened its first permanent store in New York on Tuesday. The digital retailer is looking to get into the brick-and-mortar game as legacy stores such as Mattress Firm succumb to the pressures of the retail apocalypse, scale back, and shutter stores. But Casper says it has a strategy to make it work.

"It's all about creating an amazing experience. It will be a zero-pressure environment with no commission sales people," cofounder and chief operating officer Neil Parikh told Business Insider.

We visited the new store to see what it's like:

SEE ALSO: These photos of empty stores reveal why people are going crazy over a wild Mattress Firm conspiracy theory

The new store is located in Manhattan's Noho area, on the popular shopping street Broadway. It's taken the design team a year to create the concept and just over a week to get it up and running. When we visited, parts of the store were still under construction.

Casper wants to eliminate the mindset that shopping for a mattress has to be a dreary experience by creating an engaging space where customers can trial products and have fun. There are no salespeople working on commission. "It's really meant to be the antithesis of a traditional mattress retailer," Emma Frane, communications director at Casper, told Business Insider.

"We want to create places that are fun and exciting. More like the Apple stores and less like a traditional mattress store, where you're like, 'Ugh, I have to go take a shower after I've been inside,'" Parikh said.

Kim Jong Un

Between testing ballistic missiles and eating extravagant amounts of cheese, North Korea's Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un has made plenty of pretty outrageous statements about the United States and life in the Hermit Kingdom.

His taunts and tit-for-tat exchanges with President Donald Trump in particular have at times shifted the needle from crazy to dangerous, with the two leaders engaging in a heated back-and-forth over the possibility of nuclear war.

Here are nine of the most bewildering things Kim Jong Un has said since he assumed power after his father passed away in 2011:

Trump strikes $3.9 billion deal for two presidential Boeing 747s — here's a look back at the incredible history of Air Force One (BA)

Air Force One

  • The White House and Boeing have agreed to an informal deal for two Boeing 747-8I airliners.
  • The $3.9 billion dollar deal will see the two aircraft converted to the nation's new presidential transports.
  • The planes will take on the call sign Air Force One when the President of the United States is on board.

Boeing and the White House have agreed to a $3.9 billion deal for two 747-8 Intercontinental commercial airliners that will be converted over to serve as the nation's next generation presidential transports.

The White House confirmed on Tuesday that US President Donald Trump agreed to the informal deal with Boeing.

The two brand-new jumbo jets were abandoned after Russia's Transaero airline bust in 2015. At the time, Boeing had already built two of the four 747s Transaero had on order. So instead of delivering the planes, Boeing completed flight testing and sent them to the California desert where they have been waiting for a new buyer. Now the planes are now destined to take on the call sign, Air Force One.

Air Force One is instantly recognizable — both as the airplane of the President of the United States and as a flying symbol of American military and economic might. With its hand-polished blue, white, and silver livery, it boldly proclaims the arrival of the powerful man in the world.

What many people don't know is that there isn't one, but two nearly identical Boeing jets that serve as the official transport of the president. Normally, the planes are referred to by their tail numbers — 28000 and 29000 — but when the Commander and Chief steps on board, they take on the call sign "Air Force One." In fact, presidential airplanes didn't begin using the Air Force One designation until 1959.

The president's pair of Boeing VC-25A jets is operated by the Presidential Airlift Group out of Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. While the current Boeing 747-based planes have been in service for more than two decades, they're simply the latest in a long line of flying White Houses.

Here's a look back at the history America's presidential airplanes.

Today, presidential air travel is a massive, highly coordinated operation. However, this wasn't always the case.

It all started with Theodore Roosevelt — a true American pioneer. The 26th president was the first to fly in an airplane. More than a year after leaving office, he flew in a Wright Flyer on October 10, 1910.

It wasn't until 1933 that the government actually acquired an aircraft specifically for presidential travel. That year, a Douglas Dolphin amphibious plane — similar to the one pictured below — was specially outfitted for President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Unfortunately, FDR never flew in the Dolphin.

  • Warren Buffett listed his Laguna Beach, California, home for $11 million in early 2017.
  • Buffett purchased the home for just $150,000 in 1971, which is less than $1 million in today's dollars.
  • Over a year later, the home still doesn't have a buyer.

Warren Buffett could see a big return if his Laguna Beach, California, home sells for close to its $11 million asking price— but it seems to be lacking an interested buyer.

"It's now been on the market for about five months longer than the median listing time for similarly priced homes in the same ZIP code,"reports Bloomberg's Noah Buhayar, citing data from Redfin.

Buffett has owned the home since 1971, when he purchased it for $150,000. That's about $934,000 in today's dollars. He's since renovated the place, which has six bedrooms and more than 3,500 square feet of living space.

The billionaire investor had primarily used it as a beach retreat for his family, but they reportedly hadn't used it much since his first wife, Susan, died in 2004.

5 things you may not know about celiac disease — a disorder that forces you to cut out gluten

$

sex and the city

Celiac disease is a serious autoimmune disorder that can damage your small intestine if left untreated. It is triggered by a diet that includes wheat, rye, and barley products. Although some people may choose a gluten-free diet for other reasons, it is imperative for the health of celiac disease sufferers.

Since the Celiac Disease Foundation recognizes over 200 separate symptoms that can indicate the disease, it can be tricky to diagnose. Still, starting treatment as soon as possible is critical in order to avoid even more serious health complications such as type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis.

Read on to learn more, and be sure to talk to your doctor about your concerns.

A doctor needs to perform tests to know if you have it

If you and your doctor have reason to suspect celiac disease, blood testing is the first step toward diagnosis. To obtain an accurate diagnosis, you’ll need to continue eating your normal diet — not changing to a gluten-free one — prior to your scheduled blood draw.

If uncomfortable gastrointestinal symptoms have convinced you to change your diet already, be sure to tell your doctor. According to celiac disease charity Beyond celiac, you may be able to carefully structure a gluten challenge to increase the likelihood of accurate blood test results.

Other medical tests your doctor may order include endoscopy to check for celiac-related inflammation and damage in your small intestine, and also genetic testing.

Celiac disease is genetic

If a first-degree relative (parents, children, or siblings) has a known celiac diagnosis, you should talk to your doctor about testing. According to the Celiac Disease Foundation, these close relatives have a 1 in 10 chance of developing celiac disease.

For comparison, the general population has a 1 in 100 chance. Since many cases go undiagnosed, you and your doctor should consider testing if you suffer from any unexplained, stubborn illness for several months according to the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University Medical Center.

Possible symptoms are plentiful, inconsistent, and overlap with many other conditions

Digestive symptoms are more common in children than in adults. Not only that, but some people show no symptoms at all and yet have positive tests come back for celiac disease, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

Digestive symptoms include (but are not limited to): chronic diarrhea, constipation, bloating, gas, stomach pain, and vomiting. Avoiding small intestine damage is important because if left untreated, your body will not be able to absorb the nutrients from your food that your body needs.

Non-digestive symptoms include anemia, bone or joint pain, depression, anxiety, fatigue, missed menstrual periods, and extreme fatigue.

If you think you may have celiac disease, take this Celiac Disease Foundation questionnaire and bring it with you to see your doctor.

We tried the new $4,000 treadmill from the billion-dollar startup that could be 'the Apple of fitness' — here's the verdict

$

Peloton

  • High-tech fitness company Peloton has unveiled a new treadmill that costs $3,995 and enables users to stream live and on-demand fitness classes.
  • The treadmill is currently undergoing testing before being shipped to customers this fall.
  • Business Insider had the opportunity to test the product and found it easy and fun to use.

Hot on the heels of its wildly successful bike, Peloton has created a new product, the Peloton Tread

The high-tech fitness company, which was valued at about $1.25 billion after closing a $325 million financing round last May, has a cult following of fans who are obsessed with its core product, the indoor bike. JPMorgan vice-chairman Noah Wintroub has called Peloton "the Apple of fitness."

It's a buzz that even CEO John Foley says he wasn't expecting.

"I was totally surprised by it," Foley told Business Insider in an interview at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. "When I started Peloton with my cofounders, I saw clear as day what it was going to look like and how it was going to work — the technology, the hardware, the software, the business model. I saw everything except the community. The community has blown me away."

Peloton's new $3,995 treadmill, which launches this fall, works in the same way as its indoor bike. It has an HD touchscreen that streams thousands of different live and on-demand classes that users can join from home.

It costs $39 a month to stream these classes, which include a mix of high-intensity boot camp routines, running drills, and mat work. If you already own a Peloton bike, you can stream classes for both machines for this monthly fee. Customers have the option to pay for the Tread in installments. For current members, it's $110 a month for 39 months. New members pay $149 a month for 39 months. You can reserve the treadmill online now with a $250 deposit.

Peloton invited us to its spacious New York headquarters to test out the new treadmill. The office is a couple of blocks from its cycling studio, where you can attend classes or live stream them from home on your bike.

Here's our step-by-step review below:

SEE ALSO: A billion-dollar fitness startup with a cult following just unveiled a $4,000 treadmill

When we show up at Peloton’s spacious Chelsea offices, spread over four floors, we’re reminded that the company has quickly grown out of its startup phase.

It's the second time we've come face to face with the Peloton Tread, thanks to a few technical difficulties the product, which is still in the testing phase, was experiencing earlier on in the week. Still, the size of it is shocking. It's vast — about 73 inches long and 33 inches wide — which makes us wonder how city dwellers would have the space to store it.

We hop aboard the machine. There are three categories of classes to choose from: Run/Walk, Total Body, and Floor, which includes yoga workouts. The product comes with thousands of on-demand classes, and an additional 10 classes will be live streamed from the studio each day.

How to use Vero, the No. 1 social media app on the App Store right now that millennials are saying will kill Instagram

millennials texting phones girls single partying

There's a new app dominating the App Store, and millennials are saying it's the next Instagram.

Vero promises to be a new kind of social network — one that lets you share content with specific sets of friends, doesn't allow ads, and delivers posts in a chronological feed instead of one controlled by an algorithm.

Vero's app has also been slow, unresponsive, or is simply crashing altogether for some users — likely due to the recent influx of users. But Vero remains at the top of the App Store, and tons of people are reportedly making the switch from Instagram.

Here's why Vero is blowing up among millennials right now, and a guide to get started using the app yourself:

SEE ALSO: These are the sneaky ways apps like Instagram, Facebook, Tinder lure you in and get you 'addicted'

First, before getting into the app itself, here is some background on Vero:

Vero is a free download on Apple's App Store and Google's Play store.

Vero actually debuted on the App Store in 2015, but it's become the No. 1 social media app this week thanks to its growing user base that skews heavily male and heavily millennial, according to app analytics firm Apptopia. (Half of Vero's users are between the ages of 21 and 40.)

There is some controversy surrounding Vero: The founder and CEO of the app, Ayman Hariri, previously started another company that ran into serious financial trouble and stopped paying its employees

Once you download the Vero app from the iOS App Store or Google Play store, you'll need to sign up. You'll be asked for your first and last name — there are no usernames on this app.

Vero's interface is pretty different from other social networks. Here's the first page you see when you finally log in.

Disney World and Disneyland have 11 iconic matching attractions — here's which park has the best version of each ride

It's a Small World Disney World vs Disneyland difference

Disney parks are known for thrilling rides, epic foods and drink, and a creatively magical experience. The original Disneyland park in California has many rides that match up with Florida's Disney World, but not all rides are created equal. For example, the Space Mountain in Disney World is drastically different (and worse) than its California counterpart.

After visiting both parks, we selected 11 matching Disney World and Disneyland attractions and rated which is the best version. Keep reading for a look at the differences between each of the iconic rides.

WINNER: Space Mountain is a markedly more fun roller coaster in Disneyland.

As we reported after visiting Disney World, the version of Space Mountain in Disneyland is far superior for several key reasons.

The track has been updated more recently, resulting in a smoother ride. Plus the style of roller coaster cars used in Disneyland makes the experience better thanks to supportive-backs and the epic music that plays throughout.

In Disney World, Space Mountain is a rough ride.

The Disney World version of Space Mountain has no music and a much jerkier ride experience. Though the line has neat interactive element, it's not enough to make up for the neck-breaking roller coaster ride.

You can read our full breakdown on the differences between Disney World and Disneyland's Space Mountain rides for more.

WINNER: It's a Small World is better in Disneyland.

Again, this comes down to the exterior design and line experience. The actual ride itself is essentially identical, but the experience as a whole feels completely different in Disneyland.

It's a Small World has its queue and ride boat system outside in Disneyland, with the iconic clock tower facade placed as a landmark in Fantasyland.

30 surprising things you didn't know about Dunkin' Donuts

Samsung pay dunkin donuts in action

  • Dunkin' Donuts has been around since 1950 and has picked up some secrets along the way.
  • If the coffee isn't used within 18 minutes of being made, it is discarded and a new carafe is brewed.
  • The coffee chain is seriously considering cutting its menu in half, in an effort to focus on quality rather than quantity.

They say America runs on Dunkin’, which appears to be a fairly accurate statement when you consider there are more than 10,000 Dunkin’ Donuts locations in the US and a whopping 60% of their annual revenue comes from coffee. (Sugar-filled donuts don’t tend to be major energy boosters, after-all … ) Now, with a variety of new services, consumers don’t even have to risk major sugar temptations to get their hands on one of the 4,657,534 cups of coffee the mega-chain sells every day.

Fascinated yet? Here are over two dozen other things you probably didn’t know about this fast food giant. And while you have donuts on the brain, don’t miss our exclusive report on the 14 “Health” Foods Worse Than a Donut!

Dunkin' wasn't always Dunkin'

In its original iteration, Dunkin’ Donuts was called Open Kettle. Caterer William Rosenberg founded the business in Quincy, Massachusetts after World War II by cashing in $1,500 in war bonds and borrowing an additional $1,000. Open Kettle was originally founded in 1948 as a business that served coffee, pastries, and sandwiches to factory workers.

An architect came up with the name

When Rosenberg discovered that 40% of Open Kettle’s profits came from donuts and coffee, he realized the restaurant needed a better name. So, he put his executives in a room and told them to brainstorm. His architect is said to be the one who came up with Dunkin’ Donuts, and in 1950, they made it official. (Dunkin’ considers 1950 to be the first year of business even though Rosenberg opened the same brick-and-mortar store in 1948, as it was under a different name.) In its original iteration, DD sold four varieties of donuts and 52 kinds total.

BONUS! The original Dunkin Donuts is still standing in Quincy and has been restored to its ’50s glory.

Dunkin' was briefly British-(and then French-) owned

America Runs On Dunkin’ now, but at one point, those Americans were getting their coffee and tea from across the pond. In 1990, Dunkin’ Donuts was acquired by the now-defunct British food and spirits conglomerate Allied-Lyons (which then merged into Allied Domecq). After French-based beverage company Pernod Ricard took over Allied Domecq in 2005, they agreed to sell Dunkin’ Brands to a consortium of three US private equity firms. Dunkin’ Brands has been completely independent of the three previous private equity owners since 2012.

FORT BLISS, Texas — It was a bright, warm day when I walked onto Biggs Army Airfield, surrounded by desert mountains.

But it was also loud.

I saw Chinook, Blackhawk, and Apache helicopters sprawled across the airfield, many of which were on the ground and being worked on, while a few periodically hovered above.

Think of it like the "Game of the Year" version, or the "Complete Edition"— it's a re-release that costs $50 and comes with a bunch of bonus content.

Better still, on March 6 the "Windows Edition" of "Final Fantasy XV" finally launches. That means that, finally, PC game players can get in on the open-world epic that is "Final Fantasy XV."

Release date: March 6

Platform(s): Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC

2. "Scribblenauts Showdown"

"Scribblenauts" is a zany franchise that encourages silliness and creativity at every step. By typing in various words, you're able to conjure stuff out of thin air — type in "chainsaw," and you'll get a chainsaw.

Traditionally, the games were focused on single-player, linear progression — and they were all on Nintendo handheld consoles. In the case of "Scribblenauts Showdown," you're using the same magical conjuring mechanism to face off against friends in minigames. And instead of playing it on Nintendo's 3DS, it's coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

Release date: March 6

Platform(s): Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch

3. "Kirby Star Allies"

"Kirby Star Allies" is another fresh take on a classic franchise from Nintendo. The focus here is on co-operative play, with up to four players at a time floating around.

The game otherwise features classic "Kirby" gameplay, with relatively simplistic platforming and combat that's focused on Kirby's main ability: consuming enemies and absorbing their power, like some sort of pink necromancer.

Release date: March 16

Platform(s): Nintendo Switch

Most people only see part of a flight attendants' job — here are the behind-the-scenes secrets you never knew

Day in the life of a flight attendant 2

  • Many flight attendant jobs happen behind the scenes and when you're not paying particular attention.
  • Business Insider shadowed Robert "Bingo" Bingochea, a Denver-based flight attendant for United Airlines, for a day to see what we're missing.
  • Take a look at what United flight attendants have to do to help get the plane in the air.

The next time you fly, try and take notice of what your flight attendants are up to. I guarantee you what you see isn't even half of it.

A flight attendant's job isn't simply showing you where to put your bags, giving safety demonstrations, and pushing beverage carts up and down the aisle.

In fact, much of a flight attendant's job happens before you even board the plane.

While every day on the job is different, there are a number of things flight attendants have to do behind the scenes to help get the plane off the ground and keep everything humming along smoothly throughout the flight.

To find out just what's going on that we don't get to see, Business Insider shadowed Robert "Bingo" Bingochea, a Denver-based flight attendant for United Airlines, who's been flying with the company for seven years, on his trip from Denver to Houston and back.

Here are some of the things you probably don't realize flight attendants are doing behind the scenes.

SEE ALSO: A day in the life of a United Airlines flight attendant, who woke up before 3 a.m. and ran circles around me for 9 hours

DON'T MISS: 11 insider facts most flight attendants know — and you probably don't

As a passenger, you won't ever see United's operations station, home of United's conference rooms, HR and IT departments, and Inflight Services, in Denver International Airport. We meet there to begin our journey together.

During check-in with Inflight Services, Bingochea lets the staff know he's physically there and ready to go. "They cover their bases because the plane has to be out," he says. "You can't be late. You can't be looking for coffee. You have to be there on time."

He can also find out more about his trip at check-in. But Bingochea says he never looks to see what crew members he's flying with. "I never do, because I'll fly with anybody. And a lot of people say, 'Well, I don't want to fly with so and so.' To me, that's just too much work," he says.

The most unique Disney World date ideas even mega fans may not think of

Disney Date 1

Every year, many couples go to Disney World on vacation. Although going to the parks day in and day out may be ideal for some couples, others may need some date ideas to lead the way.

My boyfriend, Louis, and I have been together for two years. Although I’m a huge Disney fanatic and could spend every second in the parks, Louis doesn't feel the same way. And that’s completely okay.

We've managed to have four successful trips (and counting) to Disney World by making sure we have date nights that are still in Disney World don't involve meeting Mickey and the gang.

Here are some of our top date destinations that make the happiest place on earth even happier:

Disney Springs

Disney Springs is the newly renovated outdoor dining and shopping area at the Walt Disney World Resort. Beyond the Disney boutiques and brand-name stores are countless opportunities to upgrade your evening.

You can put a spin on the classic dinner date by visiting one of over 30 restaurants. Some of my favorite dining destinations include:

Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant - a memorable experience that transports you to Ireland with traditional Irish fare and live entertainment.

Chef Art Smith's Homecomin’ - a casual dining experience with some of the best southern comfort cuisine I've tasted in my life.

The Edison - the newest restaurant to Disney Springs is an immersive experience with industrial decor, delicious food and unique live entertainment every single night.

If you're up for just grabbing a drink, I recommend trying the BEST wine slushies at Amorette's Patisserie or refreshing mojitos at Bongo's Cuban Cafe. Both are delicious.

The State Department newly designated 7 ISIS-affiliated groups as terrorist organizations — and it shows the group's terrifying reach

ISIS in the Philippines

The State Department announced today that seven ISIS-affiliated groups have been designated as terrorist organizations.

Underscoring the so-called caliphate’s growth outside of Iraq and Syria, the move targets ISIS affiliates in Bangladesh, Egypt, the Philippines, Somalia, Tunisia and West Africa.

In addition, two of Abu Bakr al Baghdadi’s loyalists in Africa were named specially designated global terrorists. One of the jihadists, Mahad Moalim, is the deputy leader of the upstart ISIS group in Somalia. The other, Abu Musab al-Barnawi, leads Baghdadi’s representatives in West Africa.

SEE ALSO: This map shows how the US is fighting terrorism in 76 countries around the world

1. Bangladesh

On July 1, 2016, jihadists in Bangladesh assaulted the Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka, killing 22 people. Amaq News Agency, an ISIS propaganda outlet, quickly claimed responsibility on behalf of the group and released images from the massacre.

State cites the attack on the bakery, the murder of an “Italian aid worker in Dhaka” and “numerous attacks carried out across the country” in its designation of ISIS-Bangladesh. The outfit joined Baghdadi’s project in Aug. 2014, when “a group of Bangladeshi nationals pledged allegiance.”

They swore an oath of fealty just weeks after ISIS declared that it ruled over a caliphate in Iraq and Syria. Much of that territory has been taken away from the jihadists since then.

2. Mainland Egypt

ISIS has a prolific affiliate in the Sinai, but its arm in mainland Egypt has carried out several noteworthy attacks, especially on churches.

As the State Department notes, ISIS announced in May 2017 that its men in the heart of Egypt have formed a “distinct entity” from its Sinai province, which was previously designated as a terrorist organization.

That announcement was contained in the group’s Rumiyah (“Rome”) magazine, which published an interview with an unnamed jihadist who was identified as the “emir” of the group’s “soldiers” in Egypt. (A screenshot of the interview can be seen on the right.)

“What connects us with our brothers, the soldiers of the Khilafah in Sinai Wilayah, is a relationship of brotherliness, love, and allegiance – may Allah bless them,” the “emir” of ISIS in Egypt explained. “We are all soldiers of the Islamic State in the land of Sinai and Misr [Egypt], fighting so that the word of Allah becomes supreme.”

In the cover story of that same edition of Rumiyah, the publication’s editors referred to Egypt and the Sinai as separate “lands” in which the jihadists have attacked Christians. [See FDD’s Long War Journal report, Islamic State leader in Egypt says church bombings aren’t popular.]

3. The Philippines

As ISIS grew in Southeast Asia, the organization brought together several factions under a common umbrella in the Philippines. Today, the State Department designated the entire ISIS affiliate in the Philippines, with a special focus on the “Maute Group,” which is also now listed as a terrorist entity.

The Maute Group is named after a pair of brothers, Abdullah and Omar Maute, both of whom spoke Arabic and were educated in the Middle East. The Maute brothers were early adopters of the idea that Muslims need to build a jihadist caliphate.

At first, they operated alongside the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), but they rejected efforts to reconcile the separatists with the Filipino government. The Maute men helped ISIS achieve some of its most significant gains in the Philippines. Indeed, the State Department says the Maute Group is an “integral part” of ISIS-Philippines and was “responsible for the siege of the City of Marawi.”

Despite the fact that government forces ultimately wrestled Marawi out of the jihadists’ hands, and the Mautes were reportedly killed there, the siege was a propaganda coup for Baghdadi’s enterprise. State also says the Maute Group was responsible the Sept. 2016 “Davao market bombing, which killed 15 people and wounded 70 others,” as well as an “attempted bomb attack…near the U.S. Embassy in Manila” in Nov. 2016.

The State Department cites a video posted online by the Islamic State in June 2016. A number of jihadists, under the direction of Isnilon Hapilon (the “now-deceased” former Abu Sayyaf Group leader), pledged allegiance to Baghdadi in that production. (A screenshot can be seen above.) [For more, see FDD’s Long War Journal report, The Islamic State grows in the Philippines.]
