How to use Google Duo, the video calling app that's better than Apple's FaceTime and works on any phone (GOOGL, GOOG)

Google Duo

A few months ago, my older sister made a life change that was met with animosity among the rest of my family members: she switched from an iPhone to a Google Pixel 2.

Now, I'm a huge fan of the Pixel 2. It's my favorite Android phone on the market, and I'm considering making the switch once I pay off my iPhone 6s.

My problem was that my sister lives nearly 400 miles away from me, and she has two young kids. By switching to an Android phone, she seemingly eliminated the easiest way for me to talk to my 2-year-old niece. That niece, by the way, is also a FaceTime devotee. Whenever my sister tries to call me the old-fashioned way, she says, "No, Mommy. FaceTime!"

Luckily for my niece and I, though, Google thought of a solution for people in a cross-platform relationship: a video calling app called Google Duo.

Duo is a free app that works on both iPhone and Android phones. It comes standard on the Pixel, and all I had to do was take two minutes to download it for iPhone from the App Store.

These days, my sister and I can video chat whenever we please. Here's how it works:

SEE ALSO: A major update to the Apple Watch might be coming later this year — here's what we're expecting

When you first open Google Duo, it looks totally different from FaceTime.

Duo is a little startling at first, because you see live video of yourself up top. Underneath, you'll see your recent conversations, along with all the people you know who have the app.

When you scroll down, you'll see all your contacts who don't have Duo. If you see someone you want to chat with, you can quickly invite them to the app.

To call someone, just tap on their photo. Another thing that makes Google Duo different: you can enable the option to let the other person see your live video while the call is dialing.

This feature is both creepy and cool at the same time. When I called my sister last week, my video was on her screen before she even picked up (although I couldn't see her yet).

Once the other person picks up, Google Duo looks a lot like other video calling apps. The other person's video takes up the majority of the screen, and your own video will appear in the corner.

There's one major design difference between Duo and FaceTime: your video is in a round bubble rather than a rectangle.

This certainly looks better than FaceTime, but it can be hard to tell what's in the frame or what the other person can see during your call.

29 celebrities who are sober

Not everyone in Hollywood drinks.

For some celebrities, sobriety comes after overcoming addiction. Eminem recently celebrated 10 years of sobriety, and Demi Lovato is open about her struggles. Other celebrities, like Jennifer Hudson, just choose to abstain from drinking.

Here are 29 sober celebrities.

Eminem just celebrated 10 years of sobriety.

Eminem, real name Marshall Mathers, almost died from an accidental overdose of the drug methadone in 2007. He later entered rehab, and he celebrated 10 years of sobriety in April 2018.

Robert Downey Jr. had a public battle with addiction.

Robert Downey Jr. was arrested multiple times on drug-related charges over the span of a few years in the late 90s. He later spent time at the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison and has focused on staying sober since.

"Job one is get out of that cave," he told Vanity Fair in 2014. "A lot of people do get out but don't change. So the thing is to get out and recognize the significance of that aggressive denial of your fate, come through the crucible forged into a stronger metal."

Demi Lovato openly speaks about her sobriety.

Demi Lovato celebrated six years of sobriety at one of her concerts in March 2018.

"Six years ago, I was drinking vodka out of a Sprite bottle at nine in the morning, throwing up in the car," Lovato told the crowd at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, according to Time. "So, I took a look at my life and I said, 'Something has to change, I've got to get sober.' So, I did."

The singer is unafraid to talk about her struggles with addiction and her mental illness.

Apple sells 5 different types of iPad and it's hard to choose — but there's one that's best for most people (AAPL)

ipad pro iPad air and iPad mini

  • Apple's lineup of iPads can be confusing.
  • There are now five different iPad models to choose from, each with different storage and cellular options.
  • For most people, the best iPad is the 6th Generation iPad, which starts at $329.

This past weekend, I was asked what should be a simple question by a friend: “Which iPad should I buy?”

It turns out, for many people, buying a new Apple iPad is anything but simple. “There are just so many of them,” he lamented.

He’s not the only person to be confused by the proliferating iPad lineup. You now have the iPad (6th generation), iPad (5th generation,) iPad Pro with a 10.5-inch display, iPad Pro with a 12.9-inch display, and the iPad Mini 4 — that’s a lot to choose from, even if you just want an iPad to do iPad things with.

The good news is that any iPad can surf the web, send emails, and install apps. The trick is to know exactly how much iPad you need, so you’re not paying for specs or features you might not use.

These iPads are ranked in order of what is most likely the best fit for you.

1. iPad 6th Generation

Who’s it for? Anyone who needs an iPad for home or light work at the best value.

Starting at: $329 for 32GB

Why this iPad? This iPad — just iPad — can browse the web, play games, and check social media, and the price is right. This year, it also got Pencil support, so you can use it to draw or take notes. The 9.7-inch screen is nearly the same size as a sheet of paper, so it also makes a great reader.

Any drawbacks? It’s not as powerful as the iPad Pro and doesn’t have the connector for Apple’s Smart Keyboard, although it works just fine with third-party keyboards like Logitech.

Specs:

  • 9.7-inch 2048-by-1536-pixel display
  • Supports Apple Pencil
  • 8-megapixel camera
  • 1080p video recording
  • 10-hour battery life for surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching video, or listening to music
  • A10 Fusion Chip

Read Business Insider's review here.

2. iPad 5th Generation

Who’s it for? Anyone who needs the best deal on an iPad.

Starting at: $239 (Apple Refurbished) or $250 (Wal-Mart.)

Why this iPad? You’re not gonna find a better deal on a new or almost-new Apple tablet.

Any drawbacks? It was released in March 2017, so it’s using last year’s chip, and it doesn’t support Pencil, Apple’s stylus.

Specs:

  • 9.7-inch 2048-by-1536-pixel display.
  • Does NOT support Apple Pencil
  • 8-megapixel camera
  • 1080p video recording
  • 10-hour battery life for surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching video, or listening to music
  • A9 Chip

Read Business Insider's review here.

3. iPad Pro, 10.5-inch display

Who’s it for? Designers, artists, and professionals who might want to cut video or get work done on the road. This is probably the iPad to buy if you want to replace a laptop and cost is no object.

Starting at:$649

Why this iPad? Because it’s Apple’s most powerful iPad in the roughly-the-size-of-a-piece-of-paper tablet category. It also works with Apple’s own Smart Keyboard for the iPad, in case you wanted an Apple-designed keyboard. The screen is slightly better than the less expensive iPads.

Any drawbacks? At $649, it’s pricey if all you want to do is surf the web and watch Netflix. Don’t trade up to this model unless you know you need the power or really want Apple’s keyboard.

Specs:

  • 10.5-inch 2224-by-1668-pixel display.
  • Supports Apple pencil.
  • 12-megapixel camera.
  • 4K video recording
  • 10 hours of surfing the web on Wi‐Fi, watching video, or listening to music
  • A10X chip

We compared the Apple Watch to the new $200 Fitbit Versa — and it isn't even close

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

Apple watch vs fitbit versa 4x3

  • Fitbit recently released its second smartwatch, called the Versa
  • We compared it with the latest Apple Watch to see which smartwatch is best.
  • The Versa is ultimately the best smartwatch you can buy today.
  • It tracks similar health metrics (calories burned, steps taken, heart rate), and unlike the Apple Watch, it is compatible with both Android and iOS devices.
  • The Versa also tracks sleep, which requires a third-party app to track on the Apple Watch.
  • Both smartwatches can receive notifications from first- and third-party apps, and the Apple Watch lets you respond to text messages directly from it (a similar feature is coming to the Versa for Android users soon.)
  • Multi-platform compatibility, better battery life, and a richer ecosystem for fitness fans tipped the scales heavily in the Versa's favor.
  • The Versa ($200) is also substantially less expensive than the latest Apple Watch (from $329), making it a much better overall value.

SEE ALSO: We compared the Surface Book 2 and the MacBook Pro — and it's clear which laptop you should get

DON'T MISS: We put Apple's iPhone X up against Google's Pixel 2 — and Apple’s phone is still king

Design: The Apple Watch has a nicer, more premium look and offers greater customizability, but the one-size-fits-all nature of the Fitbit Versa is also really appealing, so this round is a tie.

The Apple Watch and Fitbit Versa have a similar overall design, but there are a handful of key differences.

Apple uses an aluminum finish for its most basic watch, with a single-color fluoroelastomer (durable, synthetic rubber) band. The watch available in two sizes — 38mm and 42mm— to accommodate different wrist sizes; unfortunately the larger-sized watch is a fair bit more expensive. While the band that comes with the Apple Watch is fine, several third parties have designed cheap, alternative bands that you can swap on and off with ease.

The Fitbit Versa is also made out aluminum, and comes with two bands — one large, and one small — made out of "a flexible, durable material similar to that used in many sports watches." The reason there are two bands is that Fitbit took a slightly different design approach than Apple; instead of designing the same watch in different sizes at different prices, it stuck to one. The two included bands cover enough wrist sizes that the Versa should fit well right out of the box.

Winner: The Apple Watch has a nicer overall look and offers more customizability, but the one-size-fits-all nature of the Fitbit Versa is also really appealing, so this round is a tie.

Notifications: The Apple Watch and Fitbit Versa can both display notifications from your phone, but only the Fitbit works with both iPhones and Android phones.

If you have an iPhone, the Apple Watch's notification system is relatively straightforward and, in my experience, useful. Any notification you receive on an iPhone can be displayed on the Apple Watch (you can turn this off on a per-app basis), and you can respond to messages with simple, pre-written responses.

The Fitbit Versa works with both iPhones and Android phones, and it can display notifications for text messages, phone calls, calendar invites, and "your favorite apps."

While it's not live yet, Android users will eventually be able to respond to text messages through the Versa in the same way Apple users can with an Apple Watch — this feature will not be coming for iPhone.

Winner: Both the Fitbit Versa and Apple Watch can display notifications, and while responding to text messages is platform-specific, Fitbit wins this round since the Versa is compatible with both iOS and Android devices.

Fitness tracking: Both smartwatches track similar health metrics, but the Fitbit opens you up to a much larger community of fitness-focused people who aren't smartwatch users.

Fitness tracking is the number one reason to invest in a smartwatch, and both the Apple Watch and Fitbit Versa have this feature.

The Apple Watch tracks your steps taken, distance traveled, and heart rate and syncs these metrics to your iPhone's built-in Health and Activity apps. The Activity app lets you set and keep track of your daily movements and exercise goals, and challenge fellow Apple Watch owners to friendly fitness competitions. The Health app pulls in data from your Apple Watch and iPhone to help give you a broader picture of your health over time. Using third-party apps, you can also enable the Apple Watch to track other health metrics, like sleep.

The Fitbit Versa also tracks your steps taken, calories burned, sleep, and heart rate, but it keeps track of these metrics in its own multi-platform app. Fitbit's app is also where you can view your progress over time and challenge fellow Fitbit owners to competitions.

While the Apple Watch and Fitbit Versa both have this friendly competition feature, I'm going to argue that it's a lot more powerful on the Fitbit. That's because you can compete with people who have any Fitbit, not just the Versa, opening up your competition to more than just smartwatch owners.

Winner: The Fitbit Versa tracks similar fitness metrics as the Apple Watch, but it works on both iOS and Android platforms, and lets you stage fitness competitions with non-smartwatch owners.

The best baby name for every zodiac sign

$

baby

  • Choosing the perfect baby name is hard, but their zodiac sign might make things a little easier.
  • You could consider naming your baby after their zodiac sign's element.
  • Every zodiac sign is associated with certain character traits, which can help you find the perfect name to match your child's personality.

No doubt everyone in your life is giving you plenty of well-meaning baby name suggestions, but you probably want to find a name that really means something to you. And if you’re the sort of person to check your horoscope before you make any major life decision (or, you know, before you get out of bed), why not be guided by your baby's zodiac sign to choose their name?

One option is to name your tot after their zodiac sign's element: fire, earth, air or water. Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are fire signs; Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are earth signs; Gemini, Libra and Aquarius are air signs; and Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are water signs.

For a little firecracker, consider Enya ("little fire"), Keegan ("small flame"), Kenneth ("born of fire") or Elena ("shining light"). Heath ("heathland dweller"), Camden ("winding valley"), Hermione ("earthly") and Bryn ("hill") are great earth names. For an air sign, add Keanu ("cool breeze over the mountain"), Aria ("air"), Essen ("wind") and Brisa ("breeze") to your list. And baby names with watery meanings include Margot ("pearl"), Isla ("island"), Kai ("sea") and Marlowe ("from the hill by the lake").

Elements aside, every zodiac sign is also associated with certain character traits, which make particular names just perfect for your little one's personality. Based on the 12 zodiac signs, astrologer Charles Grant gave SheKnows his top name choices for new babies.

Of course, you won't know your baby's date of birth until she actually arrives, and it's certainly not unusual for a new arrival to make a surprise early entrance — or keep the world waiting. Plus, your baby could be born on the cusp of two zodiac signs. So check out names for the sign before or after your due-date sign as well, just to be on the safe side.

Aries: March 21 – April 19

Girl: Chloe
Chloe is the perfect name for a girl born after the beginning of spring, says Grant. Chloe is the Goddess of Agriculture, and the name means "fresh blooming." Grant says, "Chloe continues to stand out for its beauty, strength and versatility at any age."

Boy: Liam
Think Liam the Ram has a nice ring to it? Liam means "warrior," making it a great name for a zodiac sign known for courage, drive and physicality. With the name Liam, nobody is going to mess with your little Aries chap.

Taurus: April 20 – May 20

Girl: Jemima
A Taurus girl is grounded and focused on security, says Grant. At the same time, she desires harmony and tries to avoid open conflict (despite being born under the sign of the stubborn bull). A good name for your harmonious Taurus daughter is Jemima, which means "dove," the global symbol of peace.

Boy: Holden
According to Grant, a Taurus boy is both elegant and tough and deserves a classy name to let the world know he means business. "Ultimately,  he wants everyone to prosper, but he needs to be front and center," says Grant. Holden, meaning "gracious," ticks all these boxes.

Gemini: May 21 – June 21

Girl: Cheyenne
Gemini is the symbol of twins and connectedness, and this zodiac sign is known best for its communication skills and duality. Cheyenne is a Native American name that references the human ability to tell a story, says Grant. It also starts with a C, which is a three vibration in numerology — the number of self-expression.

Boy: Omari
The equivalent of Cheyenne for a Gemini boy could be Omari, a Hebrew name meaning "speaker or chief," that's wonderfully melodious and rolls off the tongue. In Arabic, Omari means "flourishing, thriving," giving this unisex name a deeper beauty.

The New York Giants have become the X-factor heading into the 2018 NFL Draft

Eli Manning

With an incoming draft class loaded at the top with quarterback talent, the 2018 NFL Draft could be a franchise-defining moment for numerous teams should they find their next longtime signal caller.

Thanks to the Jets trading into the top three, football fans have a good idea how the very top of the draft will play out, save for one team: the New York Giants.

The Browns will likely take their top choice at quarterback with the first overall pick in the draft, and the Jets will hope to get their guy at No. 3. However, since the Jets trade, the Giants' second overall pick has become the greatest variable remaining.

Below we break down the Giants options for how to use their pick.

1. Fill the hole on defense left with the departure of Jason Pierre-Paul

The Giants' decision to trade Jason Pierre-Paul came as something of a surprise but makes sense for the team in the long run, financially. The departure of Pierre-Paul is also extremely well-timed for the Giants should they wish to find his replacement in the draft, as Bradley Chubb of NC State is widely seen as one of the safest bets of the incoming class.

In another year, Chubb would be the de facto first overall pick on many experts' draft boards, but with the Browns having already beefed up their defensive line in last year's draft, Chubb is a safe bet to fall to the Giants at two.

If the Giants want to maintain the relative strength of their defense while saving a ton of money, they could use their first round pick on Chubb and continue to build from there.

2. Pick the successor to Eli Manning

The Giants haven't had to think about their starting quarterback situation in 14 years. That said, Manning is likely in the twilight of his NFL career. At 37, he could still have a few years left playing at a better than average NFL level — age seems more and more to be "just a number" to many starting quarterbacks — but the Giants have definitely reached a point where they need to start thinking about picking up and developing his successor.

In a draft filled with quarterback talent, only the Browns are picking ahead of New York, and we all know how well the Browns tend to do when evaluating quarterbacks. If the Giants believe that Josh Rosen, Sam Bradford, Josh Allen, or Baker Mayfield could be the future of their franchise, they're in prime position to nab any one of them and give them a few years to learn the ropes of the NFL under Manning's guidance.

3. Take Saquon Barkley

Here's where things get interesting.

If the Giants are in a "win now" mode and believe that last year's 3-13 campaign was a blip on the radar rather than a harbinger of things to come, then there's no need to overthink things — take Saquon Barkley.

Initially it was thought that the Browns would possibly be able take Barkley with the first overall pick and still get their quarterback of choice with the fourth overall pick, but with the Jets moving up to almost certainly pick a quarterback, it's likely the Browns will be forced to take their QB of choice first overall to ensure they get their guy. Should this happen, Barkley would fall right into the Giants' lap.

Taking Barkley would not fill the hole left by Pierre-Paul, nor would it be a step in preparation for the departure of Manning, but it would give New York the most pro-ready player in the NFL Draft. The past two years have shown just how much impact a rookie running back can have on a team — Ezekiel Elliott, Leonard Fournette, Alvin Kamara, and Kareem Hunt have all made the jump and immediately become some of the most feared players in all of football.

If the Giants' top goal is to contend for the Super Bowl in 2018, Barkley would be the obvious choice.

Apple is reportedly working on a pair of smart glasses — here's what it might look like (AAPL)

$

For years now, we've been hearing that Apple is working on a pair of smart glasses powered by augmented reality.

Augmented reality (AR), for those unfamiliar, lets you see virtual images in the real world.

Apple's smart glasses probably won't be ready until around 2020 at the earliest, but if you're wondering what that might look like, the popular freelance and crowdsource marketplace Freelancer.com recently held a contest asking designers to dream up a pair of Apple-made smart glasses. The competition featured 60 entrants and a $250 prize.

Here are the best Apple smart-glasses concepts we saw from the design contest:

SEE ALSO: This GIF nails how the iPhone X could be the foundation for Apple's rumored smart glasses

SEE ALSO: 9 reasons you should buy an iPhone 8 instead of an iPhone X

The winner of the contest was 31-year-old Renan Moreno from Brazil, who came up with this Apple smart-glasses concept that would provide an "unmatched gaming experience."

We're guessing the ski goggle-like set up on the bottom is for a fully immersive virtual reality gaming experience, and the glasses at the top are for everyday use and maybe some casual gaming.

The first runner-up was this concept from 26-year-old Kervin Tuazon of Marikina City, Philippines, who was clearly inspired by Apple's Magic Mouse.

The second runner-up was this Apple smart-glasses concept from Kelly Echavarria Toro, a freelance designer from Antioquia, Colombia, who imagined a completely immersive AR headset that combines both high-end audio and visuals.

6 common mistakes you're making when cooking eggs — and how to fix them

$

eggs avocado toast bacon

A total kitchen staple, eggs count among the first dishes most at-home cooks learn how to prepare. They're cheap, versatile, and easy … at least, that's what many of us assume. But, in fact, egg-cooking mistakes happen constantly, resulting in unappealing textures and questionable flavors. Luckily, these snafus can be avoided with a bit of know-how.

INSIDER consulted a panel of chefs to learn the most common egg-prep errors and how to get around them.

When it comes to cooking eggs, "low and slow" does the trick

To make eggs correctly, plenty of patience is required.

"Folks often turn the heat up to cook their eggs faster, but that will severely affect the taste," cautioned Susan MacTavish Best, the chef and planning guru behind The Party Whisperer.

NYC chef and restaurateur Donatella Arpaia (Prova Pizzabar) agreed: "The biggest mistake when cooking eggs [involves using] a high heat and overcooking them. The key to perfect scrambled eggs is 'slow and low'."

Using the lowest possible heat setting on your stove-top prevents the eggs from seizing and burning, allowing you to achieve the perfect consistency.

If your scrambled-egg preferences favor a looser texture, Executive Chef Michael Reich of the JW Marriott Chicago advised removing the pan from the hot burner and allowing the residual heat to do its thing.

"To avoid overcooking eggs, you should remove the pan while [the eggs] are slightly softer [than you want them] and still wet. They will then firm up as the eggs continue to cook," Chef Reich told INSIDER.

Don't add liquid to your eggs before they're in the pan.

Adding a splash of milk or cream is a scrambled-egg strategy so common that many home cooks don't even think to question it … but according to Bon Appétit Food Director Carla Lalli Music, we absolutely should.

"People love to add liquid to eggs before scrambling them and believe that a splash of milk, cream, or even water makes them more tender. Not necessary! To scramble eggs, beat the eggs with a fork until completely smooth, then season with salt. Cook in butter over medium heat, stirring constantly if you like a fluffy, finer texture, or only occasionally for velvety ribbons," Lalli Music told INSIDER.

But you should be seasoning with salt ASAP.

If you really want to amp up the silkiness of your scramble, seasoning with salt should happen as early in the process as possible.

"Salt can have quite a drastic effect on how eggs cook," Celebrity chef and nutritionist Ariane Resnick told INSIDER. "When eggs cook and coagulate, the proteins in the yolks pull tighter and tighter together as they get hotter. When they get too tight, they begin to squeeze liquid out from the curds, resulting in eggs that weep in a most embarrassing manner. Adding salt to the eggs well before cooking can prevent the proteins from bonding too tightly by reducing their attraction to one another, resulting in a tenderer curd and lower likelihood of unattractive weeping. Adding salt immediately before cooking helps, but if you want the full effect, the salt must have time to dissolve and become evenly distributed through the mixture. This takes about 15 minutes—just enough time for you to get your bacon cooked or your omelet fillings ready!"

World Penguin Day is coming up on April 25, and INSIDER has you covered with some fascinating penguin trivia.

From one-foot-tall blue penguins, the world's smallest species, to gentoo penguins, who can reach speeds of 22 miles an hour in the water, these black and white avians are as interesting as they are adorable.

Here are 23 fascinating things you never knew about penguins.

SEE ALSO: An invisible boundary that divides the US in half has started to shift — and it may be an ominous sign for the future

There are at least 17 species of penguins.

Scientists estimate there are between 17 and 19 species of penguins. You'll find these flightless birds everywhere from Africa to Australia.

Crested penguins, such as the rockhopper and macaroni species — which are characterized by the yellow or orange tufts that extend from their heads— live in the sub-Antarctic region and Antarctic Peninsula. The temperate, less-feathery Magellanic and Humboldt species are native to South America.

But only one lives above the southern hemisphere.

Since the Galápagos Islands straddle the equator, some penguins on the archipelago live further north than any other species in the world.

The smallest type of penguin is only around 10 inches tall.

Growing only to a height of 10 to 12 inches, blue penguins are also known as little penguins. They're native to Australia, New Zealand, and Tasmania.

These are 4 high-tech helicopters the best pilots in the US Army fly on top-secret missions

MH-60LM Black Hawk

Some know them as Task Force Brown, others fear them as thunderous ghosts who approach in the darkest hours of the night. To the public, they're the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR), but to the US Army and the special operations community, they're known only as the legendary Night Stalkers.

Their motto, "Death Waits in The Dark," tells you all you need to know. The Night Stalkers operate after sunset, flying through the blackness in some of the craziest scenarios and environments known to man. These are the best and most highly trained pilots the Army has to offer, undergoing months upon months of rigorous training until they are fully mission-qualified.

When the 160th deems its newest pilots and crew ready, Night Stalkers get sent on top-secret missions all across the world, from the deserts of the Middle East to the jungles of tropical Asia and everywhere in between, supporting American special operations units. Because of the nature of their missions, Night Stalkers rely on their helicopters to function well, even in extreme conditions.

These are the four helos they operate: unique, kitted out, and highly unlike any other in the US military today.

MH-60LM Black Hawk

The Black Hawk is the backbone of Army Aviation, having replaced the Huey in 1980s as the Army's go-to medium lift utility helo. Highly adaptable, rugged, and dependable, it's no surprise that the 160th would choose this aircraft as the core of their fleet.

Known as the MH-60 to Night Stalkers, these helos are refitted with a sensor suite, high-tech communications gear, a refueling probe for longer missions, forward-looking infrared radar systems, and terrain-following radars among a few other things. They can also be converted to an up-gunned attack variant as needed.

During the 2011 raid on Abbottabad, Pakistan, which saw the death of Osama bin Laden, Night Stalkers used a "stealthed out" version of the MH-60, fitted with a radar-defeating shell and other bells and whistles.

The Night Stalkers don't fly the Army's legendary gunship, the AH-64D/E Apache. Instead, they fly something just as fearsome, but slightly more versatile. Known as the Direct Action Penetator (or DAP), it's been a staple of 160th missions worldwide since the early '90s.

According to former Night Stalker CW4 Michael Durant (and recounted in his book, In the Company of Heroes), the DAP was developed in-house by the 160th using existing Black Hawks. After adding removable wing stubs to the sides of the helo and setting up a firing link to the cockpit, Night Stalkers managed to turn the MH-60 into a gunship.

The DAP comes with the ability to field Hydra rocket pods, Hellfire and Stinger missiles, 30 mm M230 chain guns (the same used by the Apache), and .50 caliber Gatling gun pods for some serious shock and awe. Unlike the Apache, the DAP has a refueling probe, giving it greater endurance and range.

Any MH-60 can be converted into a DAP using the kits created by the 160th, but it loses its ability to carry troops upon conversion.

MH-47G Chinook

The mighty Chinook heavy-lift helo has served Army Aviation well from Vietnam to Afghanistan and beyond. Because of its ability to carry tons of cargo, fly longer missions, and survive in austere conditions, the Chinook was one of the first aircraft inducted into Night Stalker service in the 1980s.

When the 160th first got its hands on CH-47s, they added a refueling probe, a fast-rope system for troop insertion, and a host of other features to bring them up to operational standards. Dubbed the MH-47D, these beasts were put to work right away.

In a testament to the Chinook's durability and heavy-lift capabilities, the 160th even used these tandem-rotor helos to "steal" a large, abandoned Libyan attack helicopter in the late '80s during a sandstorm.

8 signs you're not eating enough, even if you think you are

Woman Eating Watermelon

  • Undereating is just as bad as overeating.
  • Your body needs fuel from food to function.
  • Being cold all the time, feeling sluggish, and having mood swings are all signs that you may not be eating enough even if you think you are.
  • Weight loss plateauing, an irregular menstrual cycle, and feeling unwell are also signals that you might not be eating enough.

In general, we spend more time talking about overeating than undereating. But not eating enough can have some real consequences.

Our bodies offer a number of signals to let us know when something is off with our eating, or when something needs to change.

Here are 8 signs you're not eating enough even if you think you are, and what to do about it.

You feel sluggish.

Calories are energy. When you don't get enough calories, your body is lacking in energy for a number of reasons, resulting in a feeling of sluggishness.

According to Livestrong, your body — more specifically the cells inside it — require glucose, a key component in carbohydrates, to function. Your body also requires Vitamin B and iron, both of which are found in various foods.

If you constantly feel tired, you might want to take a look at your calorie intake, especially if you've been cutting calories, intentionally or otherwise.

You can't maintain a comfortable body temperature.

According to Livestrong.com, "low body temperature is just one of the many repercussions of very low calorie intake." Feeling cold often, particularly in controlled or indoor environments, may be a sign that you're not eating enough.

A study published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that individuals who consume a calorie-restricted diet had lower levels of T3 thyroid hormone, which Healthline lists as a "hormone that helps maintain body temperature, among other functions."

Moderate amounts of caffeine make you sick.

We all know that undereating and over-caffeinating are a bad combination, but feeling nauseous after just one cup of coffee or a couple of cups of black tea may be a sign that you're not putting enough food in your system.

Caffeine on an empty stomach, or with too little food, raises the level of acidity in the stomach. This increased level of acidity can be damaging to the stomach's lining, and can to things like heartburn, indigestion, stomach ulcers, and irritable bowel syndrome.

Pairing a balanced meal with your morning caffeine is one way to avoid sickness and help ensure you're on track to eat enough throughout the day.

6 lies movies told you about what dating is really like

Dirty Dancing

Dating can be frustrating, especially when Hollywood films portray picture-perfect dates and relationships that make most of us expect the same. When perfection doesn't happen, we can't help but ask: "What's wrong with me?"

Perhaps the right question is: "What's wrong with movies?" Because experts refute many relationship myths perpetuated by Hollywood. Read on for six ways that dating is different on the big screen.

Love at first sight happens all the time.

Movies like "(500) Days of Summer" and "Romeo + Juliet" would have you believe that love at first sight is a common occurrence. Two people lock eyes and — bingo! — they're suddenly smitten.

However, according to a 2017 study in the Netherlands, "What kind of love is love at first sight? An empirical investigation," love at first sight isn't exactly "love." Although people did report feeling an instant spark with another person at some point in their lives, research showed that this phenomenon is based on a strong sense of attraction rather than on feelings of intimacy, commitment, or passion, which are the qualities associated with true love.

The man always asks the woman out (in a heterosexual pairing).

Rom-coms often tell the same old story of boy meets girl, in which traditional gender norms run rampant. For example, the male protagonist is usually the first one to make a move when it comes to setting up a date.

However, this old-fashioned approach is slowly fading out, according to a survey by The League, an invite-only dating app. It looked at data from 100 couples that successfully got together through the app and found that one in three straight relationships started with the person who identifies as a woman initiating contact.

Blind dates are bound to be a disaster.

Movies have reaped a lot of comedic moments from blind dates gone awry, such as that disastrous double date in "When Harry Met Sally."

But they're not as hopeless as Hollywood would have us believe. After all, online dating revolves around constant blind dates.

According to a 2014 study from VoucherCloud.net (which no longer operates in the United States) that polled 2,511 married adults, one in four newlywed couples met on a blind date. That's a 25% chance of success — if your end goal is to get married, that is.

US Marines and Jordanian army soldiers Eager Lion

US and Jordanian soldiers are currently in the middle of the annual Eager Lion training exercise, an 11-day exercise involving more than 1,500 US sailors and 1,800 US Marines.

The troops train in urban, mountain, and desert environments, and practice everything from marksmanship to artillery strikes. One of the highlights of the exercise is the chance to drill at Jordan's special forces training center— the King Abdullah II Special Operations Training Centre — which is carved out of a mountain and has everything the most elite soldiers in the world need

"It is a very unique opportunity," Col. Farrell J. Sullivan, the Commanding Officer of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, told Business Insider. "It's not everyday that you get to integrate with a partner force to this extent."

Take a look at Eager Lion here:

Eager Lion is taking place in multiple locations in Jordan. Because of Jordan's geography, Marines are able to train in environments like mountains and deserts.

"The training venue that Jordan provides is great," Sullivan said. "For us being an East Coast based unit, you don't get these opportunities often."

Jordan's rocky mountains and barren deserts gave US Marines a taste of what combat in this area of the world is like.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore — Michigan

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore's beaches and emerald forests are great to visit in the fall, according to chief of interpretation and visitor services Merrith Baughman. That's because the park's beaches are full of colorful fall leaves, temperatures are still warm enough for swimming, and the park is less crowded.

One hidden gem, Baughman said, is Port Oneida Rural Historic District, which is filled with turn-of-the-century farmhouses, beautiful views of Lake Michigan, and secluded beaches.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park — New Mexico

Those who want to see CarlsbadCaverns National Park's flying bats and blooming cacti, will want to visit in the spring or summer.

"Spring is fun because the desert is alive with blooming flowers and cacti — it's gorgeous," public affairs specialist Valerie Gohkle said of the scene.

One tip: Walk the Natural Entrance Trail to descend some 750 feet down Carlsbad Cavern. Gohkle says you'll miss 50 percent of the cavern's beauty if you take the elevator.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park — Hawaii

Created by more than 70 million years of volcanic activity,Hawaii Volcanoes National Parkhas more than 155 miles of hiking trails, including the popularKilauea Iki Trail, a 4-mile hike that starts in a rainforest near the volcano's summit area and takes you on a 500-foot descent to see the Mars-like terrain of the Kilauea Iki Crater. As for views, nothing "compares to the jaw-dropping beauty of watching the sun rise over the Kilauea Caldera from the Jaggar Museum overlook, with the erupting lava lake glowing a mile and a half away, and the immense size of the caldera is revealed as the stars succumb to daylight," Jessica Ferracane, a public affairs specialist at the park, said. While this vantage point is the busiest location in the park come sunset, get there at 5 a.m., Ferracane said, and you'll feel as though you have the entire volcano to yourself. You'll want hiking boots, pants, and light rain gear when visiting the park since the crater's summit can get chilly, according to Ferracane.

18 small changes you can make every day to lose weight

ways to lose weight drink water.JPG

Losing weight may seem like a daunting process that requires long workouts and carefully planned meals. Although those things certainly play a big role in the process, there are many same changes to your lifestyle that can help you shed pounds.

To find out the little things you can do each day to lose weight, INSIDER spoke with registered dietitian-nutritionist Lisa Moskovitz, the CEO and founder of the NY Nutrition Groupregistered dietitian-nutritionist Whitney Stuart, the owner of Whitness Nutritionand registered dietitian-nutritionist Andy Bellatti, the strategic director of Dietitians for Professional Integrity. Here are their suggestions.

1. Invest in a water bottle.

When you don't drink enough water, your body can confuse hunger with thirst. This is why "upping the water intake can have a huge impact on how much you eat during the day," as Moskovitz told INSIDER.

If you have trouble drinking enough water throughout the day, there are a couple of ways you can remind yourself. First, carry a water bottle so you always have a physical reminder to drink.

Second, set goals for yourself throughout the day. Moskovitz recommended starting the day with a glass of water and having at least two cups before each meal or snack. "Not only will that help curb your appetite a little bit right before you eat, but it's a good way to remember to drink first," she told INSIDER.

2. Eat more fat.

Fat is often a feared food group, but Stuart told INSIDER they increase satiety and prevent bingeing later.

Of course, some fats are healthier than others, so when adding fat to your diet, Stuart said it's best to go for nutrient-rich plant-based fats. These fats, known as polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat, can be found in avocados, olives, nuts, and fatty fish like salmon.

3. Pay attention to the texture of your food.

If you've ever found yourself at the bottom of a pint of ice cream, you're not alone. Bellatti told INSIDER that ice cream is one of the easiest foods to overeat because of its soft texture.

"One reason why things like ice cream or mashed potatoes are easy to overdo is because the texture is such that it's very easy to just keep eating spoonful after spoonful," Bellatti told INSIDER. "Whereas, if you eat raw vegetables, you have to chew them longer."

That's not to say that you can't enjoy foods like ice cream or mashed potatoes, but it's important to be mindful while you're eating them.

6 fast-food restaurants you need to try in the Philippines

Jollibee

  • Though the Philippines hosts plenty of traditional American fast food chains, there are even more that are exclusive to the country.
  • Jollibee, a Filipino favorite, has expanded into the United States.
  • Other must-tries include Pancake House, Max's Restaurant, and Greenwich pizza.
  • Almost every fast food restaurant you go to will have American food, but will also include Filipino dishes.

A few years ago, I took a life changing mission trip to the Philippines with my church. Although we didn't have much time (or energy) to sightsee after our long, hot days of Vacation Bible School, one thing we were able to do was go to the nearest mall for lunch and dinner each night.

Initially, I thought that there wouldn't be much outside of authentic Filipino dishes, but to my surprise, things would be a little more familiar than I thought.

From the comforting sight of Pizza Hut to the scarcely seen Wingstop, the Philippines equips locals and tourists with so much to choose from when it comes to fast food.

But if you're looking for some unique chains that aren't as ubiquitous in the US, here are seven places I tried and would recommend.

Razon's

Interested in authentic Filipino dishes? Razon's will deliver just that. Whether you're looking for the mouthwatering flavors of Longsilog or the delicate tastes of Halo Halo, this is the restaurant you'll want to make a stop at.

Jollibee

Created in the Philippines, Jollibee was designed to be Asia's answer to McDonald's. Now expanded into United States, Jollibee — which was founded in 1978 — has become a popular burger and fried chicken spot.

But the chain's number one claim to fame is their spaghetti. Loaded with three kinds of meat — beef, ham, and sausage — and plenty of cheese and sauce, this is a must-order.

Dorothy's Waffles

Love waffles more than life itself? Then Dorothy's Waffles is where you need to be. Although its small location inside the mall in Angono could be missed at first glance, if you give Dorothy's  a try, you'll see why the trip you made to get there was well worth it.

Surely in a waffle league of its own, the unconventional, yet delicious flavors nestled between a folded golden brown waffle will excite (and maybe confuse) your tastebuds. So, if you've never thought of having tuna as a waffle topping before, here's your opportunity to dig in.

15 things I wish I knew before I started planning my wedding

$

the wedding planner jennifer lopez

It's no secret that planning a wedding can be stressful, expensive, and time-consuming. When you get engaged, you are automatically expected to put together a huge party (possibly the biggest of your life), with no experience in event planning and usually very little help. It's easy to feel overwhelmed and to start to hate the entire process, which is unfortunate since your time being engaged is supposed to be a happy time for you and your significant other. You might find that the planning process will be a little easier if you know what to expect.

There are certain things that you, as a newly-engaged person, might already have on your radar. You've probably already heard that everything is pricey, that you need to book things far in advance, and that creating a guest list can feel close to impossible. But there are some unexpected things that happen as well that no one ever tells you about. As someone who has been engaged for over a year now, I have experienced all of these things myself, and I know I wish I knew about them before they happened.

So, to feel more prepared as you get ready for your big day, take a look at some of the things you can expect to go through while planning a wedding.

You will not be able to stop talking about your wedding, even if you don't want to be that person

Before you get engaged, it's easy to get frustrated with newly-engaged friends and family members who can't seem to stop talking about their wedding — listening to them feels exhausting. But once you get engaged and start the planning process, you will almost definitely find that you have become that person.

It's hard not to talk about it all the time, to be honest. If you're really into your wedding day, you'll be really focused on planning, so it's only natural that you'll feel the need to bring it up whenever possible. It also doesn't help that everyone asks you about it all the time.

Everything happens all at once in the beginning, and then all at once at the end

When I set my wedding date, I figured that the next year and a half of my life would be full of non-stop planning. I was wrong. When you're planning, what typically happens is that a lot of important stuff needs to be done all at once, in the beginning; then there's a lull where absolutely nothing happens; then as the date arrives, everything picks back up again.

In the beginning, you'll drive yourself crazy booking vendors, researching, and trying to come up with your own vision. In the end, you'll feel exhausted writing checks, finalizing things, and fixing anything that may have gotten messed up along the way. But in the middle? You'll simply be waiting.

If you go to a wedding expo, you should create a new email address

Wedding expos are quite common, and can be helpful if you're struggling to find vendors or a vision. They usually involve a whole bunch of vendors in booths who will try to get you to book with them, so they can be a bit overwhelming. The best piece of advice I got about them, that I unfortunately did not take, was to create a new email address just for the wedding.

Each vendor will ask for your contact info, and even if you only give it out to one person you're interested in, your email somehow gets added to seemingly every wedding-related business in a 100-mile radius. You will be inundated with emails for months, and it's not exactly fun. I also got a lot of phone calls from vendors as well. Keep that in mind.
