Gap's CEO has a plan to make the company's secret weapon more powerful (GPS)

Old Navy

  • Gap Inc.'s CEO Art Peck told CNBC on Monday that the retailer will be opening 60 new Old Navy stores in the US.
  • Old Navy has become the parent company's saving grace. While Gap has struggled in recent years, Old Navy has seen positive same-store sales growth for the past five years.
  • The store has a cult following of price-conscious customers who choose it over Gap because of its lower prices.

Old Navy is Gap's saving grace, and its CEO wants to see more of it.

On Monday, Gap CEO Art Peck told CNBC that the retailer will be opening 60 new Old Navy locations in 2018. It currently has over 1,000 locations.

Old Navy has become Gap's sweet spot. While its parent company has struggled in recent years and announced 200 store closings at its namesake brand and sister store Banana Republic, Old Navy has seen positive same-store sales growth for the past five years.

In Gap Inc.'s fourth-quarter earnings, reported in February, same-store sales were up 5% overall at Gap Inc. This growth was driven by Old Navy, which was up 9% in the quarter. The Gap brand, on the other hand, showed flat growth compared to the year before.

The growth at Old Navy is not specific to any one section of the store. "Old Navy had a super strong fourth quarter," Gap Inc CEO Art Peck said on the earnings call. "It was very diversified and was not relying on any one horse to pull the cart."

We visited a Gap and an Old Navy store in one of New York's busiest shopping areas — Herald Square — on a rainy Thursday afternoon last May, and we saw firsthand why Old Navy is resonating well with customers:

SEE ALSO: These are the biggest sibling rivalries in the clothing business

We timed our visit to Old Navy with the start of Memorial Day weekend sales. The first thing that struck us was the amount of clothing and accessories that were on sale.

The store was awash with signs offering discounts ranging from 20% to 60% off.

There were also several clearance sections around the store.

Even before discounts, however, Old Navy was still much cheaper than Gap.

A basic women's cardigan cost $24.94 at Old Navy. At Gap, it was $49.95 (on sale for $25 with the Memorial Day weekend discount).

Trump and Macron are meeting up for a state dinner — here are 9 US presidents who previously hosted French leaders

  • Donald Trump, the president of the United States, is hosting French president Emmanuel Macron for a state dinner.
  • It's Trump's first ever state dinner.
  • From Harry Truman to Barack Obama, nine past presidents hosted state dinners for French leaders.

US president Donald Trump is hosting his first ever state dinner for the leader of America's first ally.

The guest of honor is French President — and reported "Trump whisperer"— Emmanuel Macron. Macron and his wife Brigitte will accompany her husband on the visit.

State dinners are a big deal in the US. The president usually hosts the black-tie event in the State Dining Room at the White House. They date back to December 12, 1874, when President Ulysses S. Grant held a dinner in honor of King David Kalakaua of the Kingdom of Hawaii.

Spring lamb, jambalaya, and "wines made from French plants harvested in Oregon" are on the menu this year, The Hill reported. And the presidents and their wives will be serenaded by the Washington National Opera as part of the event.

Here's a look at some notable state dinners that past presidents hosted for French leaders:

DON'T MISS: Trump's being slammed for this photo of his desk — here are past presidents' desks for comparison

US President Harry Truman hosted French President Vincent Auriol

On March 28, 1951, Truman hosted French President Vincent Auriol. Truman awarded Auriol with a Legion of Merit, and said that the president had"... displayed unswerving friendship to the United States and to the ideals held by all democratic nations, and has done much to assure the success of these ideals."

Auriol had fought with the French resistance during WWII.

US President Dwight Eisenhower hosted French President Charles de Gaulle

French President Charles de Gaulle arrived in Washington DC to much fanfare in 1960.

The French leader was in town for an April 22 state visit with US president Dwight Eisenhower.

According to the Library of Congress, 200,000 Washingtonians turned out to greet de Gauelle, who later wrote about driving through a "deafening accompaniment of
cheers, sirens and brass bands, amid a forest of banners and flags."

The French politician's trip consisted of a visit to Eisenhower's farm in Gettysburg and then a trip to Camp David.

US President Richard Nixon hosted French President Georges Pompidou

French President Georges Pompidou's 1970 visit to the US didn't go off without a hitch.

The French leader was confronted by thousands of protestors during his nine day trip. The demonstrations centered on a perceived anti-Israel bias to France's Middle East foreign policy, according to the JTA.

On February 24, Pompidou met with Nixon, who said in a speech on the South Lawn that the two leaders would "... find means to work together toward our common goal, the goal we had 900 years ago, the goal of liberty and independence for all people. That is the same goal we have today."

Mark Zuckerberg: A look at the life, career, and controversies surrounding one of the richest people in the world (FB)

Mark Zuckerberg

Through success and controversy, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been regarded as one of the most brilliant minds of his generation.

Now with a net worth of $66 billion, the young CEO is credited with creating a social network that has more monthly active users than any single country in the world has people, and his majority voting rights give him complete control of the company — which also means he's often the focal point of any backlash or scandal.

And for the last year, Facebook has faced scandal after scandal. It's been called out on multiple occasions for the way it handles user data, to the point where it's led many to debate the pros and cons of free networks like Facebook that rely on advertisers for revenue. In April, Zuckerberg was summoned to give 10 hours of testimony to Congress as lawmakers sought answers about Facebook's role in various events like the 2016 election and the Cambridge Analytica data-harvesting scandal.

In the midst of the scandals, Zuckerberg has defended Facebook and reiterated the company's stated mission to connect the world with projects like bringing internet access to areas without less connectivity; through his charity work, he's poured millions into education efforts and billions into initiatives for curing the world's diseases.

But the recent revelations have put a spotlight on Zuckerberg and his company like never before. Here's a look at the timeline of Zuckerberg's career, from his humble beginnings in a New York suburb to his role as one of the wealthiest CEOs in the world.

RANKED: The 10 best Super Mario games of all time

0
0

A mustachioed Italian plumber with a penchant for jumping on the heads of his enemies is, unbelievably, one of the most popular video game characters in the world. Hell, he's one of the most popular characters in the world period

Of course, I'm talking about your friend and mine, Super Mario:

Super Mario

It's been over 35 years since Mario first appeared in 1981 arcade classic "Donkey Kong," and, since then, he's been in, like, a lot of games (the Mario Wiki estimates somewhere in the neighborhood of 170). These range from classics like "Super Mario World" on the Super Nintendo, to more esoteric fare like "Hotel Mario" and "Mario's Time Machine."

And now, he's even on smartphones!

Super mario run

Perhaps you have young kids at home who are quickly falling in love with "Super Mario Odyssey"? Or maybe you are

Good news: That's a ton of history to dig through! That's where this list comes in: We put together the 10 best Mario games ever made and where to find them (excluding spin-offs like the "Mario Tennis" franchise, "Mario Kart," or "Mario Party" and "Paper Mario"). Let's begin!

SEE ALSO: Nintendo's new Mario game is a great argument for buying a Nintendo Switch

10. "Super Mario Bros. 2"

It may seem like an unlikely place to start, given that it's not a "real" Mario game, but "Super Mario Bros. 2" is fantastic. Notoriously, it's a re-branded, slightly altered version of a game that already existed at the time: "Doki Doki Panic." Whatever.

"Super Mario Bros. 2" is an excellent Mario game.

It's the first to allow you to play as Mario, Luigi, Toad or the Princess. Each of them has their own special attributes. Princess can float mid-jump for a moment or two. Luigi has a slightly higher jump than anyone else. More importantly, it's a surrealist adventure full of crazy landscapes, crazier enemies, and a bird that shoots eggs out of its mouth. It may not be the first Mario game you should start with, but it's one that you absolutely should not miss.

Where can I play this game?

"Super Mario Bros. 2" is available for purchase on the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U Virtual Console. It's also one of the 30 games on the NES Classic Console.

9. "Super Mario Land"

The first mobile version of "Super Mario" came with "Super Mario Land," an excellent standalone Mario game that took the concept of the original NES game and created something entirely new. It's still a standard "platformer" game — you start on the left side of a level and traverse it by moving to the right, killing enemies and avoiding your own death along the way — but "Super Mario Land" is full of delightful additions, like an underwater vehicle you get to pilot. It's a bizarre, thrilling Mario game that, admittedly, was especially impactful on my very young brain when it was first released back in 1989.

Where can I play this game?

"Super Mario Land" is available for purchase on the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console.

8. "Super Mario 3D World"

"Super Mario 3D World," simply put, is the best Mario game that's been made in the last five years (before "Odyssey," that is). It's gorgeous, fresh, and perfectly designed. Like the best "Super Mario" games of the modern era, it seamlessly blends nostalgia-laced gameplay with fresh twists.

As a nod to "Super Mario Bros. 2," players can choose to play as Mario, Luigi, Peach, or Toad — each has the same special ability that they had in the original NES game. "Super Mario 3D World" also borrows the overworld map concept from "Super Mario World" (the SNES game) and evolves it to its next logical conclusion: as an explorable world unto itself, full of secrets.

Each level in "Super Mario 3D World" feels like a gift waiting to be unwrapped, and playing it co-op with friends and family is a true delight. It may very well be the best game Nintendo made for the Wii U.

Where can I play this game?

"Super Mario 3D World" is available for purchase on the Wii U, digitally on the eShop and in-store on disc. Buy it on Amazon right here.

We compared the new millennial pink KitKat to 8 crazy flavours from Japan — and the winner was clear

  • Nestlé recently released a new flavour of KitKat in the UK.
  • KitKat Ruby is made from ruby cacao beans — the first new type of chocolate to be developed since white chocolate 80 years ago.
  • We compared the new bar to a selection of bizarre flavours from Japan, from soy sauce to sweet potato.
  • The winner was clear.

You may have heard there's a new kid on the confectionary block — Nestlé recently launched KitKat Ruby in the UK, the latest take on KitKat's classic, four-finger bar with a natural pink hue from ruby cacao beans.

It's the first new type of chocolate to be developed since white chocolate 80 years ago.

"Ruby chocolate is a big innovation in confectionery and we are very proud that KitKat is the first major brand in the UK to feature this exciting new chocolate," said Alex Gonnella, marketing director for Nestlé’s UK confectionery business.

The millennial pink chocolate bar is not unique to the UK, though. Before landing on British shores, KitKat Ruby had overwhelming success in Japan and Korea, where the number of flavours far surpasses our measly selection.

Since 2000, KitKat has launched over 300 different flavours in Japan — including bizarre options like soy sauce and sweet potato.

We compared the UK's new Ruby KitKat with a selection of 8 weird flavours from Japan — and there was a clear winner.

Scroll down to see which flavours you'd really like to take a break with.

Behold the Japanese KitKats in all their glory.

Setting out on my mission as writer at Business Insider, I bought a selection of eight flavours from Japan Centre in Soho, London — a solid basis from which to judge the new Ruby edition. The flavours included: Matcha Green Tea, Kyoto Matcha Green Tea, Azuki Sandwich, Purple Sweet Potato, Shinshu Apple, Strawberry, Amaou Strawberry and, of course, Shizuoka Wasabi.

KitKat's extreme popularity in the Land of the Rising Sun may be down to a coincidental resemblance to the phrase "Kitto Katsu," which translates into "surely win." As such, the bars are often given as good luck gifts in Japan, particularly for students sitting university entrance exams, according to The Telegraph.

The first flavour I tried was Shizuoka Wasabi.

You may associate wasabi more with sushi than a chocolately treat, but the Wasabi KitKat was an unexpected triumph.

At first, it just tastes like chocolate, but as soon as you swallow the mustardy heat hits you in the back of the throat. Fortunately, the spicy kick is more of a tap, and the subtlety of the heat is actually quite pleasant.

Score: 7/10.

Next up was Strawberry.

The Strawberry KitKat smelled hugely artificial, like a McDonald's strawberry milkshake. The taste pretty much exactly aligned with the smell — it was sickly sweet with an artificial, plasticky aftertaste. Not good.

Score: 3/10.

25 things every Midwesterner knows to be true

0

University of Iowa Fans

  • There are many foods, sayings, weather patterns, and hobbies that are only found in the Midwest.
  • We've gathered up some of the things that only Midwesterners can appreciate.
  • Examples include tornado warnings, steakburgers from Steak 'n Shake, cornhole, spending summers at the lake, and Big Ten team allegiances.

The Midwest is a unique place.

It's home to some great vacation spots, and you'll even find towns in the region that look like they're straight out of Europe.

You'll also find plenty of delicious food, and come across some words and phrases you won't hear elsewhere.

Keep scrolling to see some of the quirks only true Midwesterners can love and appreciate.

1. It's pop, not soda.

Coke, Sprite, Dr. Pepper — those are all brands of pop, not soda. According to the New York Times, there are places in the Midwest where 75% of people say pop instead of soda.

Many people say that the name pop comes from the noise a fizzy drink makes when you remove its cork.

2. There's more to Midwestern states than cornfields.

The Midwest gets a bad rap. Those who aren't from there often think of the region as nothing more than cornfields.

And while there are lots of those, there are also plenty of exciting attractions. For example, the Midwest is home to Chicago, the third-biggest city in the US. Michigan is full of quaint beach towns, and Indiana boasts beautiful sand dunes. Ohio has Cedar Point, a huge amusement park that's the second oldest in the country, while Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is known for its many breweries.

3. We take our Big Ten teams seriously.

Although not every school that's in the Big Ten is in the Midwest, the majority of the schools are, and chances are if you went to one of them, your allegiance to at least one of the school's sports teams is pretty strong.

That means you still go to games as an alum, you still tailgate, and you always have a good stockpile of spirit-wear in your closet.

13 horror stories that will scare you out of ever getting a manicure again

0

Painting Nails

A little self-care can go a long way to lift your spirits after a rough week. One of my favorite ways to destress is by visiting my local nail salon where I can relax and get pampered while I watch reruns of "Fixer Upper."

I almost always leave feeling better than I did when I arrived. But there have been a couple of times that my salon experience was more like a nightmare.

Unfortunately, experiences like this are not uncommon.

Here are some manicure horror stories from Reddit users that may make you do a little extra research before your next salon visit. Of course, these are just for fun as we can't independently authenticate them.

She clipped my cuticles raw.

"I got the most painful mani of my life. She clipped my cuticles raw, sawed an emory board into them, and filed the corners of my nails until there was no nail left. Now my cuticles feel raw and stingy, and the skin on the corners of my nails is irritated (and they look all lopsided and awful)." - Reddit user flyinglabrador

They asked me to pay ahead of time and tip and then ruined my manicure.

"An old friend of mine was getting married, so I decided to spend money and get a gel manicure. I did my research on salons and this one had really great reviews. As I was getting my nails done, they asked me to pay the bill ahead of time and add tip. I did so and provided a very generous tip, assuming this woman would do a great job.

"I hated the way my nails looked when they were done! I assumed she would go back and retouch the unclean curves for the French tips and the spotty glitter job, but nope, she seemed proud of what she did and ended it. She even showed my nails to the manager, who immediately said how wonderful they looked and asked to put them on their social media page. I thought maybe I was being too much of a perfectionist at first, but the more I looked at them, the more it made me upset that the curves were uneven, and the glitter looked like it accidentally got on there. I spent $40 on a crappy manicure and was too awkward to say I didn't like it." - Reddit user MissCavy

He took away layers of my natural nails.

"I went in to get my gel manicure soaked off and new gels put on. The guy who removed the gel was super rough on my nails and I could see him taking away layers of my actual nail. I asked him to be more gentle and I'm not sure if he ignored me or just didn't hear. Some of my nails are now sore and now I'm concerned about infection." - Reddit user hallelujahhell

MORGAN STANLEY: Here are the 10 tech companies most likely to get acquired in the next 12 months

0
0

twilio ipo

Corporate mergers and acquisitions in the US are rebounding this year.

Thanks to tax cuts, companies have access to more cash they can spend on deals.  According to Morgan Stanley, M&A offer intensity, the number of offers relative to the number of stocks, increased to 3.2% in the first quarter from 2.5% in the fourth.

Among S&P 500 sectors, tech saw the second-largest increase.

Morgan Stanley identified 10 tech companies that are the most likely to receive tender offers over the next year. On average, 7% of all the companies published in prior lists received offers in the following 12 months.

"Our model, ALERT (Acquisition Likelihood Estimate Ranking Tool), combines stock characteristics, cohort membership, and data regarding offers to forecast probabilities that stocks receive tender offers in the coming 12 months," said Brian Hayes, the global head of quantitative research, in a note on Tuesday.

"On the one hand, stock-specific information, such as yield, leverage and valuation, impacts stocks' offer likelihoods; on the other hand, recent activity levels in the cohorts to which a stock belongs (e.g., sector and size) tend to continue for some time, and this affects subsequent offer intensities for remaining stocks in those cohorts."

Betting on possible takeover targets has been a successful strategy for investors this year. A Goldman Sachs-curated index of stocks with at least a 15% chance of being acquired in the next 12 months has beaten the benchmark S&P 500 by 4 percentage points since the start of the year.

Here's Morgan Stanley's list of the top takeover targets in tech:

9 characters who could die in 'Avengers: Infinity War,' ranked by how likely it is

0
0

avengers

The trailers for "Avengers: Infinity War" have teased dark times for the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and the entire universe. That means the possibility of casualties is high.

While it's difficult to imagine some of our favorite characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe reaching the end of the line, the arrival of Thanos to Earth doesn't promise a bright future for many characters — and the prospects of survival are much worse for some than for others.

The MCU doesn't like to kill off major characters, but that doesn't mean characters haven't met their end. And the stakes are much higher than ever before for the heroes in "Avengers: Infinity War."

Whether it's a veteran of the MCU who may be on his way out like Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man, or a character whose very existence poses a problem for Thanos, such as Vision, there are plenty of reasons for some characters to die in "Infinity War."

Below are 9 characters who could die in "Avengers: Infinity War," ranked from least to most likely:

SEE ALSO: Hawkeye isn't in the trailers for 'Avengers: Infinity War,' and people's reactions to the snub are hilarious

9. Tony Stark/Iron Man

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has introduced some notable characters recently who could lead the franchise into the future, like Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and Black Panther. That means the past may not be as significant anymore.

"Iron Man" kicked off the MCU in 2008, and Robert Downey Jr. has served the character well. We'd hate to see him go, but that's also 10 years' worth of suiting up and protecting the world from danger. Seven major roles as Iron Man later — three "Avengers" movies, three "Iron Man" movies, and a prominent part in "Spider-Man: Homecoming"— and maybe Downey wants to hang up the armor for good. What better way to go out than during the biggest superhero movie of all time?

8. Bruce Banner/The Hulk

Bruce Banner, played by Mark Ruffalo, already exiled himself to another planet at the end of "Avengers: Age of Ultron." Now that he's back on Earth (just in time for the fun!), it wouldn't be a stretch for Banner to want to sacrifice himself not only to save his friends from Thanos but to rid the world of the danger of the Hulk.

Plus, Marvel doesn't seem interested in making a Hulk standalone movie. The most recent one, "The Incredible Hulk" in 2008, is one of the worst-reviewed movies in the MCU, with 67% on the reviews aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The character was recast from Edward Norton to Ruffalo for "The Avengers," and since then, the Hulk has appeared only in "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and "Thor: Ragnarok." It wouldn't be hard for Marvel to get rid of him.

7. Wong

Wong already died in "Doctor Strange" and was revived by Strange with the time stone. So it's not a stretch to say he may be expendable in an epic like "Avengers: Infinity War."

Mercedes Maybach ultimate luxury

  • The Beijing Auto Show caps off the 2017-2018 show season for the car industry.
  • The show will feature debuts from a variety of brands including BMW, Buick, Infiniti, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Maybach, Nissan, Volkswagen, and Volvo.
  • The show will also feature a heavy dose of electric mobility.
  • The 2018 Beijing Auto Show will be open to the public from April 29 to May 4.

China is rising.

There are few segments of the global economy where this is more evident than the auto industry. For more car makers, China is the most important market in the world. The Middle Kingdom's new-found wealth and 1.5 billion strong population have helped create a booming car market. Not even economic uncertainty, environmental challenges, and overburdened infrastructure can put a damper on this party.

This is why the Beijing Auto Show will serve as the capstone to the 2017-2018 auto show season.

Beijing 2018 will feature a solid mix of futuristic concepts and daily drivers from a variety of brands like BMW, Buick, Infiniti, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Maybach, Nissan, Volkswagen, Volvo, and Polestar. Electric vehicles will be out in force in light of China's new focus on non-internal combustion mobility.

The 2018 Beijing Auto Show will be open to the public from April 29 to May 4 at the China International Exhibition Center.

The Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury concept is also making its global debut in Beijing. As its name suggests, this 750 horsepower Maybach crossover is designed to be the last word in all-electric luxury.

But if you want a Mercedes you can buy at the showroom, look no further than the new long wheelbase A-Class sedan. The Chinese-built A Class L, which is another Beijing Auto Show world debut, will feature extra legroom and is intended to be more attractive to the chauffeur-driven set.

The most famous comedian the year you were born

0

comedians

The most important role of comedy is to make us laugh, even when we don't feel like laughing. And as audiences change over the years, so do the comedians they respond to.

The comedians of the '60s and '70s may or may not feel relevant today, just as the comedians of today might not be relevant in 10 years.

To determine the most famous comedian, we used Nielsen ratings for popular shows, award winners from each year, and looked subjectively at how much of a cultural impact each had.

1963 — Jerry Lewis

Jerry Lewis is total comedy royalty, with starring roles and buddy comedies with Dean Martin, in films spanning decades. But he hit his big solo break in the 1963 with the comedy "The Nutty Professor."

He later would be best known for his support and telethons for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

"I get paid for what most kids get punished for."

1964 — Dick Van Dyke

It's hard to pick one year that comedian Dick Van Dyke ruled the comedy scene. He starred in his own show "The Dick Van Dyke Show" beginning in 1961 and starred in "Bye Bye Birdie" in 1963. But he really became an icon in 1964 with his role as Bert in "Mary Poppins."

"I didn't realize how many different kinds of falls I did in that show. At this banquet recently, they showed a little clip of all my falls. I said, 'No wonder there's arthritis in my spine.'"

1965 — Barbara Eden

If you don't recognize Barbara Eden at first, you sure will when she wiggles her nose. When "I Dream of Jeannie" premiered in 1965, Eden's role as "Jeannie" quickly became iconic, though she had been on the comedy scene for years.

She went on to appear in "Sabrina The Teenage Witch,""Dallas," and "Army Wives."

"I have to make dinner — I mean actually make it without magic. We are liable to die."

louisiana cold case

Some cold cases are finally solved after decades of meticulous detective work, while others remain a mystery. Across the US, there are serial killers who have never been caught and missing people that have never been found.

Here are 50 famous mysteries that have remained unsolved.

Editor's Note: Warning that these accounts may be upsetting to some as they describe details of real-life cases.

ALABAMA: Sherry Lynn Marler went missing from Greenville in 1984.

On June 6, 1984, 12-year-old Greenville native Sherry Lynn Marler went into town with her stepfather to run errands. While he went to the bank to sign some papers, he gave her a dollar to buy a soda from a vending machine and told her to meet him back at his truck in 15 minutes. She hasn't been seen since.

"That's when our nightmare started 30 and a half years ago," Marler's mother, Betty Stringfellow, told the Montgomery Advertiser in 2015.

Marler's disappearance was featured on the TV show "Unsolved Mysteries."

ALASKA: Passengers on the fishing boat Investor were killed in Craig in 1982.

Eight people, including a man, his pregnant wife, their two children, and teenage deckhands, were shot to death aboard a fishing boat called the Investor on September 6, 1982, People reported. The killer is then believed to have returned to the scene the next afternoon to set the boat on fire.

It was the biggest mass murder in Alaskan history and rocked the small fishing town of Craig, where it took place.

The case was featured on People Magazine Investigates on Investigation Discovery.

ARIZONA: Pauline Robbin Burgett was fatally stabbed in 1978.

On March 12, 1978, Chad Burgett returned home to Phoenix after a weekend away with his mother to find his sister, Pauline Robbin, murdered with multiple stab wounds.

Police think that whoever killed the 16-year-old knew her. They have DNA evidence but no source for it yet, according to Fox 10 Phoenix.

toronto attack investigation

At least 10 people were killed and 15 others were injured when a white rental van jumped onto the sidewalk of a busy Toronto intersection, sped down the road, and mowed down multiple victims in the way.

Alek Minassian, the 25-year-old suspect, was arrested and identified by police shortly after the attack. Police said the crash "definitely looked deliberate" but maintained that the motive was unknown.

Here's what we know about the people who were killed and injured in the attack. We will update the list as we know more.

SEE ALSO: What we know about Alek Minassian, the 25-year-old suspect in the Toronto van attack

DON'T MISS: The Toronto van attack suspect warned of an 'incel rebellion' on Facebook hours before the attack — here's what that means

Anne Marie D'Amico

D'Amico was the first victim to be identified in Canadian press. She worked for Invesco, an investment management firm that had offices on Yonge Street, where the white van sped down during the attack.

D'Amico's family told CBC News in a statement:

"She genuinely wanted to care for all those around her even if it meant sacrificing a portion of herself in return for others' happiness. She only had kindness in her.

"Her name has been broadcast around the world, attached to this terrible tragedy. But we want everyone to know that she embodied the definition of altruism."

Two unnamed South Koreans died, and one was injured.

Two South Korean nationals died and one was seriously injured in the attack, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported on Tuesday, citing government officials in Seoul.

The government has contacted the victims' families and have dispatched consular staff to local hospitals and police stations to find out more information about its citizens, Yonhap added.

One unidentified male victim died while witness Diego DeMatos was trying to perform CPR on him.

DeMatos told CNN he tried to perform CPR on a man on the side of the street, but it was too late.

"I parked my car and went over to try to perform CPR on him but then as I am doing it, the guy I was trying to help was dead. He died in our arms," he told CNN's Erin Burnett.

We flew Virgin America one final time before it goes away forever — here's what it was like (ALK)

richard branson virgin america

  • Virgin America has been one of the best airlines in the US since its launch in 2007.
  • In 2016, Alaska Airlines acquired Virgin America for $2.6 billion.
  • Virgin America will merge into Alaska Airlines on April 25.
  • In March, Business Insider took a roundtrip flight between Newark Liberty International and San Francisco to experience Virgin America one final time.

In August 2007, Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson launched the US wing of his aviation empire. With Virgin America, the charismatic billionaire wanted to bring the chic style and lighthearted fun of his brand to our nation's flying masses.

In the decade since its inception, Virgin America has become one of the best and most beloved airlines in North America. It took home the Travel & Leisure's award for best domestic airline 10 years in a row.

However, the airline's 10th anniversary passed last year without Sir Richard's traditional pomp and circumstance. That's because everyone knew that Virgin America would probably not be around long enough to celebrate its 11th birthday.

This isn't because Virgin America was going bust. On the contrary, it is one of the most successful airline startups in recent history.

Instead, Virgin America had been acquired by Alaska Airlines in 2016 for $2.6 billion. Even though the airline's fans held out hope that it would be able to fly on using Virgin Group's branding, Alaska Airlines confirmed last October that two carriers would merge operations on April 25th of this year.

In a statement to Business Insider, Alaska Airlines wrote:

"On April 25 we’ll integrate our passenger service systems, which means we will have one inventory of flights, one customer website (alaskaair.com), one mobile app, and only Alaska kiosks. Gates, ticketing, and check-in areas will all be Alaska-branded at the airport. It will take more time for us to update branding on the Airbus fleet, including the livery and the interiors, but in the meantime, we’ve started selling Virgin America’s Main Cabin Select seats as Premium Class for Airbus flights after April 24."

In fact, Virgin America's fleet of Airbus A320-family jets is already being repainted with Alaska Airlines livery. In addition, the ex-Virgin America Airbus jet will also receive new Alaska Airlines interiors. The airline expects to have the complete Airbus fleet re-configured by the end of 2019.

So before Virgin America disappears into aviation history, we decided to take one final trip with the airline. Here's what we saw.

The best dental floss you can buy

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

best dental floss

The Insider Pick:

It may come in a tiny little dispenser, but dental floss can have a huge impact on your oral health. The American Dental Association recommends brushing for two minutes twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and flossing at least once a day because dental floss is very effective at removing plaque and food from between your teeth.

We take flossing our teeth very seriously, so we've done a lot of research and flossing to find the best dental floss you can buy. You may think that all dental floss is created equally, but it is not. Finding the right dental floss for your needs may even encourage you to floss more often. Here are our picks:

Read on in the slides below to learn all about our top picks for the best dental floss.

The best dental floss overall

Why you'll love it: True to its name, the affordable and shred-resistant Oral-B Glide Pro-Health Comfort Plus Dental Floss glides easily between even tightly-spaced teeth.

Oral-B is one of America's leading oral hygiene companies, and its GlidePro-Health Comfort Plus Dental Floss is the best you can buy. It was first developed in 1971 when the inventor of Gore-Tex used a Gore-Tex fiber to floss his own teeth. Oral-B didn't have good luck with this kind of floss for decades, but now the Glide floss is the most popular kind among dentists.

There are several different varieties of Glide floss, and all of them are designed to slide easily into tight spaces. Our top pick, the Pro-Health Comfort Plus, is a shred-resistant, mint-flavored, monofilament floss that is coated with beeswax. It slides easily between teeth to pull out the plaque and food between your teeth. This is the dental floss our guides editor Malarie Gokey uses.

The reviewers at Pearly Whytes call the Oral-B Glide Pro-Health Comfort Plus Dental Floss and other Glide-style flosses from Oral-B the best you can buy, and buyers agree. There are 1,089 customer reviews on Amazon, and the floss has an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars. Fans of the floss note that it is gentle on gums, doesn’t fray, and gets between tight teeth easily.

One reviewer named Andy wrote: “This is actually my favorite brand of floss. My teeth are pretty close together … and I find that especially on my back molars, traditional floss is pretty hard to get in between them, and often times I actually rip through or fray more traditional flosses. This stuff goes in without ripping, and because it slides in easier, I can get it to contour easier around my teeth.”

Another verified buyer on Amazon wrote: “Best floss I've ever had, flavor is just subtle enough to not be overwhelming while pleasant enough to make flossing less unappealing, smooth enough to get between a couple of my teeth which have become nigh unassailable with normal floss since my dentist put fillings that all but connected my teeth together.”

Pros: Glides easily between teeth, gentle on gums, minty flavor, non-fraying, affordable

Cons: Some users complain that the floss breaks easily

The best dental floss for sensitive gums

Why you'll love it: Dr. Tung’s Smart Floss has a unique, biodegradable dispenser and thick, expandable floss that offers exceptional cleaning.

Dr. Tung’s is best known as the company that first introduced Americans to the concept of a tongue cleaner, but the company has been producing a range of healthy, natural-based oral care products ever since. Its Smart Floss is exceptionally well made.

Everything about Dr. Tung’s Smart Floss is different than traditional floss, starting with the circular, rotating dispenser, which is biodegradable. The thick, stretchy floss is notably softer than other types of floss, making it perfect for people with sensitive gums.

Free of gluten, PTFE, and BPA, the floss is lightly waxed with a blend of vegetable and beeswax. Dr. Tung's says that the floss has been “clinically proven” to remove up to 55% more plaque than regular flosses, though we haven't verified that personally.

The only downside is that this multifilament floss is available in only one flavor: cardamom. However, many people like the sweet, spicy flavor as an alternative to mint.

A wide variety of professional reviewers and bloggers, including those at Tools of Men and Pearly Whytes, list Dr. Tungs Smart Floss as one of the best flosses. Buyers agree — 570 Amazon reviewers give the floss an average of 4.7 out of 5 stars.

One buyer said they're "obsessed" with the floss, adding, “I am a dental hygienist and absolutely love this floss. It's textured and tough and cleans so much better between the teeth than any floss I've ever used. I will say if your teeth are extremely tight (and I mean extremely tight ... like you have a hard time using glide) then this probably wouldn't work for you. I use this floss every day on patients and very rarely does it shred ... I've personally seen a difference in gum health of my patients after using this floss for 6 months.”

Another reviewer wrote: “I have a periodontal condition and after trying a number of floss products, I decided to use Dr. Tung's. Good choice — It's soft enough so that it won't damage the gum tissue but it still cleans effectively. This floss is woven and tends to expand a bit when you use it — this allows it to fill the space under the gum line for more thorough cleaning.”

Pros: strong, expandable, soft, superior cleaning ability, biodegradable dispenser

Cons: expensive, only one flavor

The best dental floss that's all-natural

Why you'll love it: The thick string and all natural ingredients in Tom’s of Maine Anti Plaque Flat Spearmint Floss will leave your mouth feeling oh-so fresh.

Tom’s of Maine has been producing natural personal care products for more than 45 years. Its popular flat dental floss is so wide it could almost be considered dental tape. But whatever you call it, this spearmint-flavored floss is perfect for people with wide-set teeth.

Made of multiple nylon filaments, this thick, rope-like floss resists fraying and is covered in three natural waxes, including beeswax. If you prefer your oral care products to be all natural, you're in luck. Tom’s proudly proclaims that the floss contains, “No synthetic waxes, artificial sweeteners or preservatives, no artificial color or flavor, and no animal ingredients."

Many professional reviewers and bloggers, including those at Tools of Men, Women Dentists, and Pearly Whytes, recommend the all-natural toothpaste. Our guides editor Malarie Gokey has also used this floss off and on for years, and it works well.

There are more than 305 customer reviews on Amazon, too. One verified buyer wrote: “I first tried this brand in a kit that the company sent me in a prize that I won. I instantly fell in love. I really like how the thicker string makes your teeth feel SOOO much more clean! I also don't have any issues with plaque buildup when using this brand.”

Another buyer added: “I really like this floss. Some say it is like ‘rope’. I guess I can understand that after using some of the other flosses that really slip and slide and glide. Personally, I like a little texture & roughness so that it feels like it's actually doing some cleaning and scrubbing instead of just sliding over the gunk.”

Pros: All-natural, slides easily, strong and flat floss works well for wide-set teeth

Cons: Expensive

9 celebrities you'd never guess were raised Mormon

0

Katherine Heigl Ryan Gosling

Religion is an important part of many peoples' lives, including celebrities.

Many of these stars are also open about what they believe. To give just a few examples, Justin Bieber has talked about his Christian faith, Zayn Malik has said he's proud to be Muslim, and Natalie Portman has discussed her relationship with Judaism.

There are also a few celebrities who have opened up about being Mormon. While some of these stars are still practicing, others were raised with Mormon beliefs and later left the church.

Katherine Heigl was raised in a Mormon household.

The "Grey's Anatomy" actress was raised in a Mormon household from the age of 7. Although she no longer practices the religion, her respect for some of the practices followed her into adulthood.

"That structure and discipline was really good for me," she told Good Housekeeping in 2014. "I had a childhood that was a childhood. I listened to my parents. I respected the rules."

Prior to marrying her now-husband, Josh Kelley, they didn't live together, which was due to her Mormon upbringing.

"I ... didn't want to live together before we were married. I still have enough Mormon in me — not a lot, but enough — that I wanted to keep that a little bit sacred," she said in an interview with Vanity Fair in 2008.

"American Idol" contestant David Archuleta completed a two-year mission trip to Chile.

You might remember David Archuleta from when he competed on "American Idol" in 2008. In 2012, he took a hiatus from the music industry to complete a two-year mission trip to Chile at the Chile Rancagua Mission where he spread the Latter Day Saints (LDS) gospel.

In 2014, he released a single called "Glorious," which was one of the lead tracks in the documentary, "Meet The Mormons."

Derek and Julianne Hough both grew up Mormon.

You might know them from "Dancing with the Stars," but Derek and Julianne Hough grew up Mormon.

Julianne no longer follows the rules of Mormonism, and doesn't practice the religion anymore, but said she is grateful for her upbringing. She recalled in an interview with New York Post that growing up in a "no sex before marriage, no drinking, no caffeine, no smoking, no swear words, no R-rated movies" environment was hard for her when she entered Hollywood.

Her brother Derek, in his book, "Taking the Lead: Lessons from a Life in Motion," described his childhood as "very Mormon." Although he no longer is practicing like his sister, when Derek is working on a show, he avoids drinking alcohol or coffee.

The best places to live in Philadelphia

Philadelphia

  • Philadelphia has gone from an underdog to the newest "it" city.
  • With culinary hotspots, a rich historical background, and affordable housing, it's easy to see why Millennials and entrepreneurs are flooding to Philadelphia.
  • If you're looking to make the move, here are the best neighborhoods in Philadelphia.

Almost overnight Philly has gone from an underdog city to the newest "it" city of the east coast. Earlier this year, the Eagles finally clinched the Super Bowl win every resident’s been dreaming of, it’s on the shortlist for Amazon’s new headquarters, and the real estate market has never been hotter.

The New York Times even referred to it as "the next borough," a nod to its proximity to the Big Apple and the Amtrak train that gets you from city to city in just over an hour — less than it takes some Brooklynites to make their way to Manhattan.

Add to that a world-class food scene, theatre on par with its east-coast cousins, a rich historical and cultural background andaffordable housing, and you can see how it's quickly become a hub of millennials and aspiring entrepreneurs.

For someone like me, who was born and raised in Philadelphia, it’s easy to see why it’s succeeded. The people, food, charm and affordable prices were enough to make me move home after spending eight years in New York. A piece of advice? You'll quickly learn that cheesesteaks come "wit whiz" and water is known as "wooder"… and that’s enough to win over lifelong locals!

If you happen to fall into the category of someone contemplating a move to the City of Brotherly Love, here are five of the best neighborhoods.

1. Fairmount

Fairmount is the perfect place for any art lover or fitness fanatic. It's steps away from world-renowned museums like the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Barnes Foundation, and the Rodin Museum. Soak up Cézanne, relish in Rodin, or delight in Degas — it's all within reach in Fairmount.

As for fitness freaks — you can run the museum steps Rocky Balboa style or give Kelly Drive, a pedestrian lane running along the Schuykill River, a spin. It's by far the most idyllic spot for an early-morning workout.

If you're feeling especially adventurous you can go for a row in the river. Boathouse Row runs parallel to the pedestrian hotspot and is a home to the clubhouses of rowers from high schools and universities all over town.

2. Manayunk

You'll find Manayunk a 20-minute train ride or drive from the center of Philadelphia. Manayunk has the charm of a small town but the personality and bustling feel of a city. Nestled among massive hills is Main Street, a bustling hub of small businesses.

With more than 30 restaurants, 18 bars and clubs, nine cafes and coffee shops, boutiques, specialty stores and art galleries all within a mile radius, there's no need to travel far for the culture you need.

At night, the streets are alive with its young residents. Manayunk is home to hundreds of college students thanks to its close proximity to six of Philly's biggest schools. But don't let that scare you away — many of these college students have grown up and stayed in the area to raise their families. It's also home to young professionals, new parents, and dog lovers.

3. Fishtown

In spite of its interesting name, Fishtown is actually a lovely little place to live. Most Philadelphians equate Fishtown to Brooklyn's Bushwick— it’s a little bit hipster, but a lot of fun. Full of quirky bars, antique shops and restaurants, Fishtown is only a 20-minute subway ride from the heart of the city.

What was once a home for local commercial fishermen is now home to eclectic art, a thriving music scene and a coffee company giving Starbucks a run for their money, La Colombe. Factories have been transformed into modern, sleek lofts and tiny row homes have been upgraded to luxury homes with roof decks overlooking the city skyline.

'Fortnite' fans are convinced a falling meteor will change the game forever -- and the game's creators are teasing them for it

telescope, Fortnite Meteor

The makers of "Fortnite: Battle Royale" decided to have a little fun in response to conspiracy theories that the island will be changed forever by meteors that have recently been spotted shooting across the skies in the game.

In a scheduled update yesterday, Epic Games added a conspiracy-themed easter egg to the scenery on top of a building in Tilted Towers, the games most heavily-populated area, and the rumored target of the meteor.

For a few weeks now, "Fortnite" players have been panicked over the fate of Tilted Towers, the game's most heavily-populated area, as meteors--ever-growing in size and frequency--seem to be closing in.

If you land on the top of a building toward the center of Tilted Towers right now, this is what you'll see:

SEE ALSO: Meteors are falling in Fortnite — and they could change the game as we know it

The scene appears to depict the remains of a conspiracy theorists' stake out: couches, lawn chairs, an ice chest and a loot chest, all assembled in a semi-circle.

For the record, I was killed numerous times trying to get these screenshots.

You'll notice that part of the floor is knocked out in my screenshots because I was tragically not the first person to drop onto the scene, but I did end up placing 34th after just wandering around this rooftop without cover or a weapon for close to 5 straight minutes, so I'll call that a successful round.

Kotaku got more pristine shots of the spread, and weren't playing on mobile.

The rooftop's makeshift living room setup surrounds a TV with no signal...

...and a telescope pointed directly at the now ever-visible meteor.
