The 20 worst pieces of healthy advice you might be following

sit ups abs exercise

  • Some "healthy" habits are actually terrible for you and your overall well-being.
  • Kitty litter should definitely not be used as a DIY "clay mask."
  • Skipping sunscreen in favor of getting vitamin D does more harm than good to your body in the long run.

Some of the tips you see on social media and "healthy-living" blogs won't work, and others are downright dangerous.

Using dental floss to remove moles

"There's some pretty scary skin-care advice out there," says New York City dermatologist Bobby Buka, MD, founder and chief science officer of the First Aid Beauty. One of the worst ideas he's ever seen: Tying dental floss around a mole or skin tag to reduce blood flow and make it fall off. Any mishaps could lead to dangerous infection or even kill skin tissue — both way more serious than any concerns about your appearance. A quick in-office removal is always a smart bet. "You get the benefit of a sterile environment, a practiced hand, and some lidocaine to numb the pain," says Dr. Buka. Learn more myths about skin tags you need to stop believing.

Treating depression with essential oils

"I've recently seen a couple of posts suggesting essential oils and 'psychedelic medicine' as treatments for anxiety and depression," says Shiri Macri, MA, a licensed mental health counselor at Vermont wellness retreat center Green Mountain at Fox Run. "While essential oils are wonderful and can be a great addition to a repertoire of self-care strategies, depression and anxiety are very real mental health conditions that often need more than simple self-care to heal." As for the psychedelics: Using illicit and unregulated substances to "cure" mental health conditions can exacerbate the struggle and even contribute to addiction. Here are more mental health myths that need to be set straight.

Getting "flat abs" in 10 minutes

Countless Instagram posts, YouTube videos, and online articles promise to deliver a workout (in some cases just one exercise move) that'll give you a flat stomach in mere minutes a day. Unless you have very low levels of body fat, the muscles in the abdomen are naturally covered by a layer of fat, says Jasmine Marcus, DPT, a physical therapist in Ithaca, New York. "Even if you did a great abdominal workout five times a week, you still probably wouldn't be able to see them," she says. They might feel stronger, but they'll keep hiding under that layer of fat until you lose weight. No one exercise has magical results. Here are some more common myths about ab workouts.

8 cameos you may have missed while watching 'Deadpool 2'

deadpool 2 vanisher

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for "Deadpool 2."

"Deadpool 2" surprises with a few big cameos, but there's no way you caught them all.

One actor is unrecognizable under a bunch of prosthetics and we bet you didn't realize upon a first watch that Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds plays another character in the sequel.

From two big celebrities to a "Star Wars" actor, keep reading to see the stars you may have missed in "Deadpool 2."

If you thought you saw Brad Pitt literally pop up momentarily in "Deadpool 2," you're correct.

Deadpool signs an invisible character named the Vanisher onto his superhero team, the X-Force. It seems to be a gag, but when the character flies into a wire and gets electrocuted, Pitt's face flashes on screen for a few moments before he's killed.

According to screenwriter Rhett Reese, Ryan Reynolds reached out to Pitt.

"Brad's kids loved the first movie, and so he jumped at the chance. He did it for scale, and a cup of coffee," Reese told Fandango. "[Pitt] insisted Ryan deliver [the coffee] to him on set, which happened.

You can read more on Pitt's cameo here.

He wasn't the only big star in the movie. Matt Damon is also in the film for a brief scene.

Damon plays one of the two men Cable runs into when he travels back to the past. He's seen pretty prominently on screen. If you missed him, it's because he was unrecognizable.

"Our makeup artist Bill Corso is the best in the business, literally. And he put Matt in this prosthetic, this chubby suit, and this facial kind of puffiness,"screenwriter Paul Wernick told Comicbook.com. "And you just would have never known it was Matt Damon."

According to Wernick, the actor is credited in the film as Dickie Greenleaf, a character from "The Talented Mr. Ripley," which Damon stars in.

You can read more on Damon's cameo here.

Damon wasn't the only star in that truck scene. So was "Rogue One" actor Alan Tudyk.

If you sit through the film's credits, you'll notice Tudyk is listed as playing "Redneck #2."

Tudyk played the quirky K-2SO security droid in 2016's "Rogue One."

7 foods Americans eat that French people find disgusting

eating cake

You don't have to be a cuisine connoisseur to know that French food is some of the tastiest and challenging to make. Simply put, the French know their food. And their ingredients tend to be far less processed than in the United States. And sometimes, when they visit the States, they are appalled at some of the food Americans actually eat.

We rounded up all the  American food and beverage items French people are grossed out by. Read on to see if anything you eat on the reg grosses out the French.

Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches may be a staple in American cafeteria lunch boxes, but the French are not fans.

"They just don’t see what the big deal about it [is] as there are so many better things in the world, and things that don’t totally clutter and stuff your mouth when you eat them."– David from "Ask A Frenchman"

The butter found in the United States doesn’t compare to butter in France.

"French butter, even the standardized, industrialized kind has a sweet and sour tangy quality that American butter lacks. US butter tastes like, well, fat. Anthony Bourdain made me realize this (among other things). No wonder people use Crisco (yuck) and similar substitutes."– Antonio Balvet

The French are known for their love of cheese, and American "fake" cheese found in spray cheese and boxed mac just doesn’t hold up.

"The problem is just that you call it 'cheese.' Please don't call it cheese, find another name, and Frenchies might not be scornful."– Ludovic Turlier

Millennials spend thousands of dollars going to their friends' weddings every year — here's how much 10 people are saving just to attend

weddings cost wedding guest bridesmaid saving spending money budget dress shopping cost expenses

  • Weddings are expensive to plan: In 2017, The Knot found that the average cost of a wedding in America was $33,391.
  • But it's also not cheap to be a wedding guest or a bridesmaid.
  • Costs can easily add up with the hotel stay, Ubers, gifts, a dress, and the multiple parties to attend.
  • Refinery29 interviewed 10 millennial women about how much money they plan to spend this wedding season.

It's widely known that getting married can be expensive: For the typical wedding, there are venues to secure, DJs to pay, invitations to send out, and maybe a signature cocktail cleverly named after the newlyweds (or their wedding hashtag). In 2017, The Knot found that the average cost of a wedding in America was a staggering $33,391. But what's also staggering — and talked about a lot less — is the steep cost of simply showing up as a guest.

Attending a wedding can involve a lot of spending: There's the gift, the hotel stay, and the Ubers to and from. And, for those in the wedding, it's a whole other beast: the bachelorette party, the bridal shower, the bridesmaid dress, the hair, the makeup...the list goes on.

According to a Credit Karma study, almost 20% of millennials say they've spent more than $1,000 on attending someone else’s wedding. Nearly 30% admitted to feeling FOMO over missing one. And for some, it's a FOMO powerful enough to make them plop down their credit cards and spend money they don't have. The moral of this story is: Maybe we all need to start saving for our friend's upcoming weddings. (My friend group hasn't started getting married yet, but when we do, god help us all.)

So how much should you be saving for wedding season? Ahead, 10 millennial women get real on how much they save and spend to attend their friend's weddings.

SEE ALSO: 9 questions you need to ask yourself before choosing bridesmaids

Name: Caroline
Age: 29
Location: Boston, MA
Job: Environmental HR Generalist
Salary: $70,000

How many weddings are you going to this season?

"We're attending seven weddings this season. I'm in one of the wedding parties and my boyfriend is in three of them. The added cost of staying two nights instead of one in order to attend the rehearsal dinner and the wedding has added up quick. For the weddings that my boyfriend is in, the venues are high-end resorts in Maine, New Hampshire, and Cape Cod, that require the wedding party to stay overnight on the premises. We expect to spend a minimum of $2,000-$2,500 on lodging and gifts alone. The biggest cost for my boyfriend has been the bachelor parties he's required to attend as a member of the wedding parties. We agreed that this was a cost he would take care of on his own, and he has paid for a majority of it out of his own savings. We had hoped to get engaged ourselves this year, but it has proven impossible to save for a ring on top of all of the expenses that have come with attending other people's weddings."

What part(s) of wedding attendance are you saving up for?

"I'm specifically saving for bridal showers, wedding gifts, travel, and lodging."

How much are you trying to save, and what steps are you taking in order to do so?

"The goal is to save at least $2,000. My boyfriend and I set up an account that we each transfer a minimum of $100 into each month. We started saving for the 2018 wedding season in November of last year."

Have you racked up any credit card debt as a result of attending weddings? If so, how much?

"Last year we attended five weddings and had to travel to Canada and California for two of them. We spent $1,500 altogether for the season, paid on our cards, which we took three months following the weddings to pay off. This year we really want to pay for weddings out of our savings as opposed to just putting everything on a card like we did last season."

Name: Mila
Age: 29
Location: Toronto
Job: Financial Service Administrator
Salary: $45,000

How many weddings are you going to this season?

"I’ve been to two already this year. One was a destination wedding where I was a bridesmaid, so that one cost me about $2,000. The other one was local. I spent about $250 on the bachelorette party, $100 on the gift, and another $200 on miscellaneous stuff like accessories and Ubers. If I have another wedding to go to this year, I'll just be a plus one, so it'll just cost me about $100 for my gift contribution."

What part(s) of wedding attendance are you saving up for?

"I'm saving my vacation days! And the travel aspect of weddings, like hotels, excursions, and sight-seeing, has been the biggest budget-eater. All my friends live far from me, and most of the weddings I'm going to will require me to fly, so I just take my travel budget for the year and use that."

How much are you trying to save, and what steps are you taking in order to do so?

"I put away $500 per month into my travel fund, which I will use for destination weddings. If it’s a local wedding, then it comes out of my fun fund ($700/month), and then I might dip into my short-term savings if it gets to be too much."

Have you racked up any credit card debt as a result of attending weddings? If so, how much?

"No, and no one is worth me going into debt for! If we're good friends and my presence means something to them, they would give me plenty of heads up. If not, then I don’t feel bad missing it."

Name: Agnes
Age: 34
Location: NYC
Industry: Fashion/Consumer Goods
Salary: $78,000

How many weddings are you going to this season?

"I have 13 weddings this year and I'm the maid of honor for three of them. I'm not attending them all, though — only seven. But three of the seven are destination weddings."

What part(s) of wedding attendance are you saving up for?

"All of it. I'm willing to spend the most on gifts, given these are all special, close, dear friends of mine."

How much are you trying to save, and what steps are you taking in order to do so?

"I'm allotting $1,200 for the weddings I am maid of honor in — trying to include hotels, dresses, gifts, and miscellaneous costs, as well as bridal showers and bachelorette parties. (None of these three are destination weddings — thank goodness.) For the destination weddings, I'm allotting $750 for hotels, flights, and gifts. I'm going to wear dresses I currently own — no need to buy new, and I'm not attending the extra activities for these weddings. For the last wedding, which is local, I'm allotting the most money towards the gift."

Have you racked up any credit card debt as a result of attending weddings? If so, how much?

"No. I am a firm believer in not using what I don't have, which is how I came to attend the seven out of 13 and how I made my budget. I also saved way in advance and started a savings fund for weddings when my friends began to have more serious relationships in our late 20s."

5 things to know about mass shootings in America

$

parkland police

At least 10 students were killed at a Santa Fe, Texas high school on May 18 after a classmate opened fire with a shotgun and a .38 revolver.

The shooting came just three months after another teen shooter killed 17 in Parkland, Florida, sparking nationwide youth-led protests over gun violence – and a familiar debate over what changes could really make a difference.

As a criminologist, I often hear misconceptions creeping into the debate that springs up whenever a mass shooting occurs.

Here's what the research actually shows:

1. More guns don’t make you safer

A study I conducted on mass shootings indicated that this phenomenon is not limited to the United States.

Mass shootings also took place in 25 other wealthy nations between 1983 and 2013, but the number of mass shootings in the United States far surpasses that of any other country included in the study during the same period of time.

The U.S. had 78 mass shootings during that 30-year period.

The highest number of mass shootings experienced outside the United States was in Germany – where seven shootings occurred.

In the other 24 industrialized countries taken together, 41 mass shootings took place.

In other words, the U.S. had nearly double the number of mass shootings than all other 24 countries combined in the same 30-year period.

Another significant finding is that mass shootings and gun ownership rates are highly correlated. The higher the gun ownership rate, the more a country is susceptible to experiencing mass shooting incidents. This association remains high even when the United States is withdrawn from the analysis..

Similar results have been found by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, which states that countries with higher levels of firearm ownership also have higher firearm homicide rates.

My study also shows a strong correlation between mass shooting casualties and overall death by firearms rates. However, in this last analysis, the relation seems to be mainly driven by the very high number of deaths by firearms in the United States. The relation disappears when the United States is withdrawn from the analysis.

2. Mass shootings are more frequent

A recent study published by the Harvard Injury Control Research Center shows that the frequency of mass shooting is increasing over time. The researchers measured the increase by calculating the time between the occurrence of mass shootings. According to the research, the days separating mass shooting occurrence went from on average 200 days during the period of 1983 to 2011 to 64 days since 2011.

What is most alarming with mass shootings is the fact that this increasing trend is moving in the opposite direction of overall intentional homicide rates in the U.S., which decreased by almost 50 percent since 1993 and in Europe where intentional homicides decreased by 40 percent between 2003 and 2013.

Michael Jordan house

Michael Jordan's enormous house in Chicago is still on the market after six years despite cutting the price nearly in half and still paying more than $100,000 each year in property taxes.

The house was originally listed for $29 million and has every bell and whistle you can think of. There's a pool with a grass island in the middle of it, a door from the Playboy Mansion, a table based on the streets of Baghdad, and MJ-branded golf flags.

Below we take a closer look at the house and why it is struggling to find a buyer. Most images are from footage provided by Concierge Auctions.

Tony Manfred contributed to this post.

The 56,000 square-foot, 7-acre compound from the air.

The gate to get in, fittingly.

The price on the house has dropped several times and is now going for $14.9 million, or about $265 per square-foot. That is a far cry from the original $517-per-square-foot price. It should also be noted that the exact price is $14,855,000 and the numbers in that price add up to 23 because of course they do.

santa fe shooting

On Friday morning, a gunman armed with two guns opened fire at Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Texas. At least 10 people were killed and another 10 were injured.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott called the shooting "one of the most heinous attacks that we've ever seen in the history of Texas schools," and described the suspect, 17-year-old Dimitrios Pagourtzis, as "evil."

The Santa Fe High School shooting comes just months after another massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February, in which 17 people were killed in Parkland, Florida. That shooting, as have many others, reignited a nationwide discussion over gun rights and gun control.

Here's a timeline of how the attack in Santa Fe, Texas, unfolded on Friday:

11 reasons you should buy an Apple Watch instead of Fitbit's new $200 smartwatch

$

Apple Watch Series 3

In the world of smartwatches, Apple Watch reigns supreme— and for good reason.

The 4-year-old watch — which is on its fourth iteration, the Apple Watch Series 3 — is still the best watch for iPhone users. It has built-in GPS, an optional cellular connection, a stunning edge-to-edge display, and can even tell you when you're having heart problems.

But in recent months, Fitbit introduced an exciting new smartwatch called Fitbit Versa that looks a lot like an Apple Watch, has most of the same features, and costs a fraction of the price.

And while Fitbit Versa is a fantastic watch, there are still 11 strong reasons to buy an Apple Watch instead:

SEE ALSO: A major update to the Apple Watch might be coming later this year — here's what we're expecting

1. Apple offers more styles, finishes, and bands for the Apple Watch.

Apple currently sells five types of Apple Watch — Apple Watch Series 1, Apple Watch Series 3, Apple Watch Edition, Apple Watch Hermès, and Apple Watch Nike+ — all of which come in multiple finishes and colors.

Apple also sells eight different types of bands in dozens of colors, not to mention the third-party bands that work with Apple Watch, too.

All in all, Apple Watch is more customizable than Fitbit Versa.

2. Apple Watch comes in two sizes, whereas Fitbit Versa only comes in one.

Apple Watch comes in two sizes — 38mm or 42mm. This is perfect for people with larger or smaller wrists, or anyone who has a particular preference when it comes to the size of their watch face.

Fitbit Versa comes in only one size — about 34mm. This is perfect for slim wrists, but not for anyone who prefers a larger watch face.

3. Apple Watch has a bigger screen and slimmer edges — called bezels — meaning it's closer to having an edge-to-edge display.

The screens on both sizes of the Apple Watch are larger than Fitbit Versa's 34mm display. But beyond screen size, Apple Watch has slimmer edges than Fitbit Versa, which means the screen takes up more of the watch face.

Plus, all Apple Watches have an OLED display, versus Fitbit Versa's LCD screen. OLED displays typically look better, brighter, and have more contrast than LCDs.

I flew on the cheapest private jet in the world and it's truly a game changer

Cirrus Vision Jet 7

  • The Cirrus Vision Jet is a small, single-engine, carbon fiber private jet
  • At $2 million, it's the most affordable private jet in the world and costs roughly half as much as its closest rivals.
  • The Vision has room for up to five adults.
  • It has a range of 1,150 miles while cruising at 345 mph and 28,000 feet.

For most of us, the jet ownership is something that is more fantasy than reality. After all, few have millions to burn on a private jet.

However, Cirrus is trying to bring that dream closer to reality for more people with the new Vision Jet.

At around $2 million, it's the most affordable private jet on sale today. In fact, it's roughly half the price of its closest jet-powered competitors.

Cirrus Aircraft was founded as Cirrus design in the mid-1980s and is a company best known for its small single engine prop planes. For the Duluth, Minnesota-based planemaker, the Vision Jet represents the next chapter in its history.

According to Matt Bergwall, the director of the Vision Jet product line, it will not only attract new customers to Cirrus but also allow it to retain its existing customers when they decide to step up to a jet.

The Vision Jet has been in the works for more than a decade. The first prototype made its first flight in 2008, but the financial crisis delayed the plane's development. In fact, the Vision Jet didn't enter production until December 2016.

A couple of weeks ago, Business Insider got the chance to experience the Vision Jet in person. To do so, we made our way to Morristown Airport in New Jersey where Matt Bergwall and the Vision Jet awaited.

Morristown Airport is also where we got the chance to check out the HondaJet last year

Here's how to opt out of the new Instagram feature that lets random users post your pictures to their story

Instagram

Instagram launched a new feature on Thursday that lets users take photos in their feeds that were posted by others, and add them to their own stories.

It's a great opportunity for influencers hoping to get more exposure for their content, and for regular users who enjoy having their pictures potentially go viral. If you're neither of those however, it might be alarming to know that your account is automatically set to allow this kind of sharing.

It's only available to Android users for now, so iPhone users won't immediately notice the change (it'll hit the iPhone "soon," Instagram told Mashable), but unknowing iPhone users on Instagram can still have their pictures shared on other people's stories.

To use, it, Instagram accounts with access to this feature can tap on the paper airplane icon under images in their feed and select "Create a story with this post," which now appears at the top of the "Share" list. Once the user has done that, the picture will be seen by anyone who views their story, including followers and — if it's a public profile — anyone who happens upon their account.

If this is something you're uncomfortable with, there are two ways to proactively opt-out of it.

Since users can only share your picture to their story if you have a public account, one option would be to make it private.

Go to the Settings cog on your profile and scroll down to toggle "Private Account" on. This makes your profile completely inaccessible to anyone who doesn't follow you, meaning they can't see pictures on it but they also can't share pictures in a direct message or — as of this week — to their story.

Of course, the followers you've allowed to view your private account will still be able to share your photos to their stories.

If you don't want to make your profile completely private, you can turn off the option to "Allow Resharing to Stories," which is now located just above the option to make your account private.

The option to opt-out is already on iPhone users' accounts even if they can't use the feature yet. So, regardless of the phone you have, you can adjust your settings if having your pictures appear on someone else's story isn't really your thing.

The royal wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry was a truly A-list affair.

Amal and George Clooney, Oprah, Serena Williams, Elton John, and many of Markle's famous "Suits" co-stars were in attendance.

Here are all the celebrities who attend the royal wedding on Saturday at England's St. George's Chapel.

Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey was one of the first celebrities to arrive at St George's Chapel. Though some were confused as to why Winfrey was at the royal wedding, it's been reported that Winfrey is planning an interview with Meghan Markle's mom, Doria Ragland, to discuss racism.

Patrick Adams and Troian Bellisario

Meghan Markle's on-screen husband in "Suits," Patrick Adams, arrived in England Friday with his real-life wife, Troian Bellisario.

Adams played Markle's love interest and eventual husband on the show, and the two are reportedly good friends in real life.

Such good friends that Adams made a joke about Markle on her wedding day, saying she wasn't just out getting milk. This was a play on a joke he made when Markle's engagement was announced.

Gabriel Macht and Jacinda Barrett

Gabriel Macht was another one of Markle's "Suits" co-stars to attend the royal wedding.

On Wednesday, he posted an Instagram photo showing him and his wife, Jacinda Barrett, in Hyde Park, London.

The caption teased, "Yesterday #london#hydepark Today #guess."

Confusingly, the next day Macht posted three photos appearing to show the couple at an event in the south of France, but presumably that's just a quick detour before they return to England for the royal nuptials.

  • Costco membership provides access to a store known for its deals and bulk quantities.
  • Business Insider reached out to Costco employees to find out what they thought were the best deals in the store.
  • Employees highlighted a huge range of products, from bananas to hearing aids to the $1.50 food court hot dog.

Costco membership is supposed to bring about some major savings. The retail chain is famous for selling items in bulk, which can help you save money, if you know what you're doing. It also boasts a food court that hawks cheap and yummy eats, and tons of surprising and quirky offerings.

But Costco employees themselves know firsthand which deals are worth it — and which are best to skip.

A Costco employee with 15 months of experience told Business Insider that seasonal items can make for pretty good deals when supplies of the product are running low. "They are marked with an asterisk on signage and can be marked down quite a bit," they said.

But there are plenty of other products that Costco workers think are worth your money. "You just have to pay attention," said one worker with two years of experience at Costco.

Business Insider spoke with 48 Costco employees to get their ideas on what items you should consider buying at the retail chain.

Here are some things you might want to consider picking up on your next Costco run, according to employees:

We compared the iPad to Amazon's Fire HD 10 tablet — and the winner was obvious

tablet insider picks 4x3 thumbnail

  • Apple's iPad and Amazon's Fire HD 10 tablet may look similar on paper, but we put their hardware, software, overall value, and third-party app support under a microscope and the iPad was a clear winner.
  • Not only is it more powerful, but it's capable enough to replace your "real computer" with relative ease. That said, the Fire HD 10 was a worthy competitor, and may still be worth getting depending on your tablet needs.
  • The latest iPad came out this week; it supports the Apple Pencil and you can pick up for $329 at Best Buy.

SEE ALSO: The 9 best iPhone and iPad accessories I use every day

Hardware: The iPad is hands-down the most powerful tablet under $500, but the Fire 10 HD holds its own better than any other budget-friendly option.

If you looked at the basic tech specs for both the iPad and Fire HD 10, it would be easy to think they were evenly matched. Both tablets have 32GB of storage, 2GB of memory, a built-in smart assistant, quad-core processor, roughly 10 inch screens, and get 10 hours of battery life. If you look a little closer, though, the iPad is the more powerful of the pair overall.

  • Screen: The iPad's screen has a resolution of 2,048 × 1,536, which is a fair bit higher than the Fire HD 10's 1920 x 1080 display.
  • Processor: Apple's line of A-series processors is incredibly powerful, and the four in the new iPad run at a speed of 2.36Ghz. The Fire HD 10's processors run at 1.8Ghz.
  • Memory: While the speed of memory can vary, what gives the iPad the edge in this category is how its used. Instead of allocating all of its memory to a single on-screen app, the iPad lets you use two apps at once.
  • Storage: The Fire HD 10 actually wins this round because you can easily upgrade its storage by popping in a MicroSD card. With the iPad, what you see is what you get.
  • Voice assistant: The Fire HD 10 wins again, since Alexa beat Siri in our voice assistant pop quiz.
  • Battery life: The iPad has had solid, 10-hour battery life since the first model was released in 2010. I was able to try the Fire HD 10, though, and its battery life was just as impressive, so in this way both tablets are evenly matched.

Winner: If raw power and multitasking are important to you, the iPad is the only tablet you should consider.

Software: The new version of iOS makes the iPad feel more capable than ever, which is why it handily won this round.

Raw power is important in the tech world, but so is software. The iPad runs iOS 11, the same operating system that runs on the iPad Pro and iPhone. The Fire HD 10 runs Fire OS 5, codenamed "Bellini," which runs on every other model of Fire Tablet. I've gotten to use devices using both operating systems, and the iPad wins this category by a landslide.

It's hard to overstate how good iOS has gotten on the iPad over the last year. You can use multiple apps simultaneously and stash your most-used apps in a dock. These features let you use an iPad more like a traditional computer — at least that's how I use my iPad Pro— instead of just another way to browse the web and watch shows on Netflix. New features are added to iOS on an annual basis, and Apple supports its devices for long enough that the iPad you buy today will only get more capable with age.

Fire OS, on the other hand, is built around activities like reading, watching video, and listening to music; preferably all within Amazon's content ecosystem (but also via Netflix, Hulu, and Spotify). The first time you turn on a Fire Tablet and log into your Amazon account, Fire OS will automatically begin populate it with your Kindle Books, Amazon Video playlists, and Prime Music or Amazon Music libraries. Don't get me wrong, this you-centered approach to tech is very welcome, but it makes the Fire HD 10 feel more like really cool place to kill time rather than a ticket to adventure.

Winner: The latest version of iOS was tailor-made to make the iPad feel more powerful and capable, which is why Apple wins this round.

Overall value: Apple and Amazon have different ways of providing value to their customers, and Amazon's strategy gives the Fire HD 10 the edge.

Not everyone can afford to spend a lot to get the "latest and greatest," tech, which is why it's important to consider value when buying an expensive gadget.

Apple's approach to value is to keep an item at a set price, but improve its hardware and software every year. This year's iPad costs just as much as last years, but it has a better processor and support for the Apple Pencil. This is a valid strategy, but it doesn't change the fact that an iPad costs north of $300.

The Fire HD 10 costs $150, and while its hardware and software are less capable, it's price makes it much more attainable. That's doubly true since you can split its price into five payments of $30 through Amazon with no interest or added fees. The fact that you can pay $45 (Amazon charges full sales tax upfront) right now and have a Fire HD 10 at your door in two days for Amazon Prime members is a lot more compelling.

Winner: Apple and Amazon both have valid tactics for providing value, but it's undeniable that Amazon's is more compelling, so the Fire HD 10 wins this round.

Harry Meghan kiss wedding

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were married Saturday at St George's Chapel in Windsor in an elaborate and elegant royal ceremony.

Oprah, Serena Williams, and Elton John were some of the celebrities who turned out to watch them marry, as well as Queen Elizabeth and virtually all of the royal family.

Scroll down for a timeline of the day and click here to refresh the page for the latest updates.

The public part of the ceremony ended when Harry and Meghan left for their two wedding receptions, hosted by the Queen at St George's Hall, not far from the chapel. That marks the end of the public part of the ceremony.

But Kensington Palace did share a photo of the finished royal wedding cake, which will be eaten at the reception. It is impressive, to say the least.

How this startup went from producing a synthetic spider silk to partnering with fashion icons

bolt threads startup spider silk mylo sustainable fashion13

  • Bolt Threads is a biotech company based in Emeryville, California, that produces sustainable materials to supply the apparel industry.
  • Among these materials are a synthetic spider silk called Microsilk, developed without the help of spiders, and a newly-announced synthetic leather material called Mylo derived from the root structure of mushrooms.
  • The company's mission and materials have garnered attention from the fashion industry and landed it partnerships with brands such as Patagonia, Best Made and Stella McCartney.

The production of Bolt Threads' synthetic spider silk material has nothing to do with actual spiders.

The venture-backed biotech startup launched in 2009 and specializes in the vegan material, dubbed Microsilk, which has landed the Emeryville, California, company on the map in recent years.

CEO Dan Widmaier and a team of fellow scientists studied how spiders make silk to try and replicate that process using DNA samples similar to that of the arachnids. The silk fibers that spiders make are durable, soft, and can withstand a high degree of tension without breaking, similar to steel.

To Widmaier and his team, it was the perfect source of inspiration for a sustainable material derived from "four billion years of life on this planet," a focal point in the company's mission statement. With the textile industry being the second-largest polluter on the planet next to oil, there's always room for innovation of new materials.

Since Microsilk's debut, Bolt Threads has received $213 million in funding and has catapulted into a comfortable limelight in the apparel and tech industries. Business Insider visited the company's Emeryville location to catch up with Widmaier about Bolt Threads' latest developments, including a partnership with English fashion designer Stella McCartney and a new synthetic leather material produced from the roots of mushrooms.

In a 2016 interview with Business Insider, Widmaier said he wasn't much of a fashion guy. But as his company's sustainable materials have increasingly been embraced by the fashion industry, that's shifted a bit. "I'm not not a fashion guy, we'll put me in the middle," he said.

Source: Business Insider

Microsilk was responsible for putting Bolt Threads on the apparel industry's radar. Scientists have been trying to nail down the production of a synthetic spider silk for 30 years, but Widmaier and his team were the ones to accomplish it, though they knew the arachnids' cannibalistic nature would get in the way if they turned to them for help. “Spiders in a cage would eat each other, so that’s a problem.”

They keep this guy hanging around instead.

In lieu of enlisting the help of spiders, the company takes DNA samples that mimic spider silk proteins and transforms the DNA into yeast, which the company controls and can grow at a rapid rate. Each spot below is a single yeast cell that feasts on nutrients and doubles every four hours.

This is the "magic of using biology" to create a material, said Widmaier. The company can make metric tons of yeast that will result in the end product.
