8 things you should know before you start drinking apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar

Much like kale and coconut oil, apple cider vinegar has definitely reached mainstream status, as there are tons of tonics, vitamins, and beauty products on the market that utilize this super-powered ingredient. And yes, this also extends to diets, as some swear that the "apple cider vinegar diet" supposedly helps keep the weight off.

But there are things to consider before you buy that raw unfiltered bottle of goodness at your local health food store.

Acidity levels, potential interactions with medications, and unwanted indigestion are all some common setbacks associated with apple cider vinegar, making it extra important to talk to a professional first, before you actually incorporate it into your everyday diet.

To see what other things you should be cautious o, if you do indeed decide to give apple cider vinegar a try, we spoke to a handful of experts about this eye-opening topic.

1. Make sure you are purchasing the right kind of vinegar.

It’s safe to say that there are tons of apple cider vinegar brands available on the market, but Rebecca Lee, registered nurse and founder of RemediesForMe.com told INSIDER that not all apple cider vinegars are created equal.

To bring the most health benefits to your diet, she said you’ll want to look into purchasing organic raw apple cider vinegar with the mother. She explains that "the mother" simply means strands of protein (which contain enzymes and beneficial bacteria) in organic apple cider vinegar which consists of cellulose and acetic acid, which, she says gives the vinegar a cloudy-like appearance.

2. Apple cider vinegar can be highly acidic.

Despite its naturally antiseptic properties, registered holistic nutritionists Jenni Bourque and Mirna Sharafeddine of The Naughty Nutritionists  explain that apple cider vinegar can be highly acidic, which can ultimately cause damage to the esophagus and tooth enamel if you aren’t careful. With this in mind, they recommend diluting your vinegar (try one teaspoon to one tablespoon) through a straw in a large glass of water to avoid drinking it straight up.

3. Be cautious if you are diabetic.

Although apple cider vinegar can lower blood sugar levels, diabetics should also be extremely cautious of using apple cider vinegar improperly. Bourque and Sharafeddine said that too much vinegar can worsen symptoms of gastroparesis for type one diabetics, making it important to talk to your doctor first, before you actually start consuming it regularly.

5 things you're doing every day that could be hurting your eyesight

eyes

  • Your eyes are precious, but people often take them for granted.
  • Even those with perfect vision should visit an eye doctor regularly to get checked for common eye diseases, such as glaucoma and macular degeneration.
  • To take care of your eyes, it's important to visit an eye specialist regularly, wear sunglasses, avoid smoking, and eat healthy vegetables.
  • Luckily, staring at a screen all day won't damage your eyes permanently, but it can cause strain on the visual system.
  • Here are five common ways people hurt their eyes every day, and how to avoid them.

We know we shouldn’t look directly at the sun, because it can cause serious eye damage even after a few seconds, according to Healthline. But there are plenty of other everyday habits that can hurt our eyes over time.

Business Insider spoke with Christopher Quinn, president of the American Optometric Association, to get some insight into how we may be damaging our eyes without even realizing it.

Even if you think your vision seems fine, these five things could be hurting your eyesight:

SEE ALSO: I use computer glasses to protect my eyes from blue light — and my go-to pair is only $9

1. Staring at screens for too long

In a single day, think of all the screens you may encounter — your smartphone, GPS, computer, TV, tablet, and more.

Fortunately, all those hours of screen time probably aren’t causing physical damage to your eyes, according to Christopher Quinn, president of the American Optometric Association. However, looking at screens for too long can cause stress in the visual system.

That stress can result in eye strain, headaches, difficulty with focusing — a number of things that can impact quality of life overall,” Quinn told Business Insider.

It's probably impossible to avoid screens all together. Instead, Quinn suggests practicing the 20-20-20 rule, which calls for you to look away from the screen every 20 minutes for at least 20 seconds and look instead at an object that’s at least 20 feet away. It gives you an opportunity to refresh your eyes, he said.

2. Not wearing sunglasses

Whether the sky is sunny or overcast, the sun’s harmful rays can still impact our eyes. You don’t have to stare directly at the sun to experience damage. In fact, sun exposure over time can lead to cataracts and macular degeneration, which is a leading cause of vision loss in older adults, Quinn said.

Sunglasses can help protect against that damage, but it’s important to wear ones that protect against ultraviolet (UV) light, according to the National Eye Institute.

“UV light-absorbing sunglasses mitigate that risk substantially,” Quinn said. “Normally, high-quality sunglasses will filter 95% or more of the harmful rays of the sun.”

3. Smoking cigarettes

Aside from increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer, smoking cigarettes can also affect eye health, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Just like sun exposure, smoking can increase the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration.

Photos show how Microsoft took a big step forward in its crazy plan to power the internet from the sea (MSFT)

Microsoft Project Natick Scotland

Microsoft has put a data centre in the sea in an experimental effort to see if it can provide internet services faster to coastal cities using renewable energy.

As part of its bigger Project Natick "moonshot," Microsoft has put the data centre on the seafloor close to Scotland's Orkney Islands.

The data centre is submerged 117 feet under the sea and is powered by a submarine cable running from Orkney. Microsoft picked the islands because it wants its data centres to run on renewable power, and Orkney is a major hub for renewable energy.

Scroll on to see to see photos of how the project unfolded.

SEE ALSO: This is Microsoft's plan to power the internet from under the sea

A Microsoft employee first came up with the idea of an underwater data centre in a whitepaper, and the company's artificial intelligence and research division took on the project in 2014. Data centres are the internet's backbone, storing huge amounts of information.

The wider goal with Project Natick is to deploy data centres at scale anywhere in the world within 90 days.

Most data centres can take anywhere from one to two years to deploy — but as more of the world comes online, it would be handy to speed this process up.

The company initially built a proof-of-concept vessel last year in the calm waters of California, which operated for 105 days. It was called Leona Philpot, after the character in Microsoft Xbox game "Halo."

11 signs your old relationships are affecting your current one

$

sad couple having coffee

The past impacts our present every day, whether it's in how we approach certain situations, or how we emotionally react to what people say.

In romantic relationships, people can sometimes repeat behaviours to make up for the falls of their previous ones. In psychology this is called repetition compulsion, and it essentially means you're trying to fix the past by pursuing similar situations or people who once hurt you.

There are several signs that you haven't let go of the past, and these can manifest in how you behave with your current partner. Often, these patterns can start incredibly early with the relationships you had with your parents growing up.

"Our childhood experiences with our parents and our teachers and our friends really do have a pretty big impact on how we operate both personally and professionally in early adulthood," Jennifer B. Rhodes, a psychologist, dating coach, and founder of Rapport Relationships, told Business Insider.

"There's a pretty big population of people who enter early adulthood who have insecurity around creating and managing relationships. So I think what happens is when you're not fully aware of the patterns you experienced at a younger age, you actually reenact those as an adult — and sometimes it doesn't look pretty in your personal or your professional life."

We spoke to several relationship experts to find out how to tell if you're still hanging on to your past, and how this affects your current relationship.

Here are the 11 signs they came up with:

SEE ALSO: Experts say codependent relationships are damaging — here are 8 warning signs you're in one

1. You always attract the same type of people.

According to Judith Orloff, a psychiatrist and author of "The Empath's Survival Guide: Life Strategies for Sensitive People," if one of your parents was a narcissist, or an alcoholic, you may find you keep being attracted to these types of people until you can work through what hurt you in that initial relationship and begin to heal.

"Empaths do this a lot, because they're such fixers and they want to get in there and heal things," she told Business Insider. "And they think if they fix the person, somehow that's going to heal their original relationship. But it never works.

"So it's important that people are aware, if they've had alcoholic parents and they keep attracting alcoholic boyfriends, that there may be a connection there, and that it's important to look into whatever wounds you had growing up with an alcoholic parent so you don't keep creating that in your life."

2. You have 'tainted joys.'

Perpetua Neo, a doctor of psychology and founder of Detox Your Heart, told Business Insider a bad relationship can give you "tainted pleasures." These are things or experiences that were once important to you, or that you used to enjoy, but because they are connected to your previous partner you can't stand them anymore.

"Or you feel guilty for enjoying it, or revisiting the same thing re-traumatises you," she said. "Re-trauma can be something normal, but having it persist for a long time is not normal. There's a big distinction. There's always this period of healing where you get this dip and after that you get a rise. But if you feel like you're always going to be in this dip forever, then that's not healthy."

Tainted pleasures can be something as simple as a musician or a place. It could even be an item of clothing.

"I can't wear this dress, not because he bought it for me, but because he said something nice about it or I wore it to something," Neo said. "So sometimes there's this guilt that you're betraying your ex-partner, and sometimes you just feel like it's been tainted."

3. You have hangups around physical intimacy.

Sometimes the signs might not be apparent until you're in the bedroom. Neo said people can have sexual hangups around their previous relationships for various reasons.

"For instance, when people feel they cannot be sexually intimate because of their ex-partner," she said. "We're not just talking about general sex, but also certain positions, or certain ways in which a person touches them, or how they see themselves sensually… Really importantly, a big sign is if you say to yourself 'I'm not going to think about it.' But if it still owns you emotionally, in the middle of the night, or if you're triggered or stressed, then it still affects you."

16 TV shows that carried on after the main star left

$

darlene roseanne

ABC swiftly canceled "Roseanne" after its main star sent out a tweet comparing President Barack Obama's former advisor Valerie Jarrett to an ape

While Roseanne won't return to TV this fall, the network is reportedly considering ways to continue the show without its lead in a spin-off centered around the rest of the Conner family. It certainly wouldn't be the first time a hit show has carried on after its lead has been fired.

INSIDER rounded up shows that have tried to continue without its main actor. Some have continued on successfully for years while others floundered for a season or two before getting the ax. Let's face it: Sometimes, it's just not the same without a show's original star.

Many of the show changes involved the firing of lead actresses after they asked for pay raises equal to their male counterparts. This was long before actresses like Jessica Chastain and former E! News host Catt Sadler were speaking out about pay equity.

Others are because of spats on and off set and allegations of sexual misconduct. And still other times, stars just felt they had told the story they had set out to tell and felt the show was, perhaps, past its prime.

"8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter" tried to continue after the sudden death of its lead star.

John Ritter's unexpected death during the production of season two left the show up in the air. After going on a brief hiatus, the show returned for two more seasons, but it was never the same.

Though the show wrote the star's death into the show and had David Spade and James Garner join, "8 Simple Rules" couldn't recover without its lead. Ritter's death overshadowed the series with the show becoming a reminder week after week about the actor's untimely death. It was a downer.

The show was canceled after its third season as ratings continued to decline. Things turned out all right for the cast.

Cuoco went over to "The Big Bang Theory" and is one of the highest-paid stars on TV and Katey Sagal was a lead on FX's hit "Sons of Anarchy."

"Once Upon a Time" tried to reinvent itself after a lot of the main cast left.

After Emma Swan and Captain Hook tied the knot at the end of season six, six original cast members announced they were departing the show.

With so many beloved characters gone, the show attempted hitting the reset button by fast-forwarding a decade and following Swan's son, Henry. Unfortunately, the result felt too much like a rehash of the original show.

Showrunners Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis also attempted bringing back the Alice in Wonderland character — a personal favorite of Kitsis' — even after a spin-off with that character had already failed

ABC didn't seem too invested in the show any more either. The series was moved from its longstanding Sunday night slot to the Friday night death slot at 9 p.m. when its presumed younger audiences weren't tuning in. The show was canceled after bringing in lower ratings than its previous sixth season.

"The Office" continued on for two seasons too long after Steve Carell left.

Will Ferrell and James Spader both tried to keep the show afloat after Carell left the NBC comedy on its seventh season, However, Deangelo Vickers and Robert California couldn't really pack the same punch as Michael Scott.

Many agreed it just wasn't the same without Carell's charm and humor. Instead, it felt like the show dragged on as the show dipped in ratings.

  • Now, the towns are facing an uncertain future.

The discovery of oil in northwestern North Dakota turned several small towns into unexpected boomtowns from 2006 to 2014.

In places like Williston and Watford City, town populations more than doubled as lucrative jobs in the oil industry attracted workers from all over the world.

By 2016, the price of oil plummeted from more than $100 a barrel to $30, sending the same towns into an economic tailspin. Now, with fewer jobs to go around and local schools and police departments straining, its residents are facing an uncertain future.

16 things you need to know before adopting a rabbit

$
0
0

pet rabbit

I've lived with rabbits for most of my life. They're wonderful and hilarious companions — and with all those greens in the house all the time, even the humans in my home eat better.

Rabbits are clearly first in my heart — but according to the Humane Society of the United States, they're the third most popular pet in the country after dogs and cats. Yet they're disproportionately misunderstood.

There's a lot more that I could tell you, but here are the most essential things you need to know if you're considering rabbit adoption.

Rabbits are not short-term pets — they can live 8-12 years or more.

Most of us have seen those adorable pens full of baby rabbits at a pet store at some point. When they’re young and tiny, it’s easy to think of them like hamsters, mice, and gerbils if you don’t know any better.

Fact: Rabbits aren’t rodents, they’re lagomorphs— and they have completely different needs and life expectancies.

“House rabbits can live to be 8 to 12 or more years old. With proper care, a rabbit will grace your home with love, sass, and comic relief. But they’re definitely not starter pets that can live in a cage. Instead, they are delicate prey animals that require time, attention, special diet, and expensive vet care,” Red Door Animal Shelter vice president Toni Greetis told INSIDER.

Locating a rabbit-savvy veterinarian is a necessity — rabbits are not like cats and dogs internally, and require special knowledge and care.

In veterinary terms, rabbits are considered exotic animals. You wouldn’t expect a dog specialist to necessarily be up to speed about salamanders — you’d look for a reptile specialist.

Rabbits are mammals, not reptiles — but they still require someone who knows rabbits well. Rabbit anesthesia, medication, and surgery are delicate, precise things that you don’t want to trust to just anybody.

“Just like you would not go to a dermatologist for a problem with your eyes, going to a person who sees rabbits means you will get the best care for your rabbit,” Dr. Kristin Valdes of Chicago Exotics Animal Hospital— a Chicago-area veterinary practice that sees at least four rabbits per doctor per day  — told INSIDER.

If you’re not sure where to go in your area, look for a vet who is a member of the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians.

Properly caring for a pet rabbit can get expensive.

To be fair, properly caring for any pet can get expensive — my use of "properly" assumes that your pet has regular vet visits and any necessary care in addition to all the usual facets of your particular pet’s life.

Just as dogs and cats can develop chronic conditions that require lifelong care — so can rabbits. I’ve worked in animal boarding facilities and administered injectable fluids and medications to cats, and I have friends with diabetic cats and dogs who require daily insulin injections. Guess what: Rabbits can require ongoing care as well.

Several years ago, I had one rabbit with known tooth problems when my significant other  and I adopted him. He had sharp points on his molars that needed to be ground down regularly so they didn’t injure his mouth or prevent him from eating. That required rabbit anesthesia — always a tricky business — and a vet with rabbit dental experience every single time.

One of my current bunny babies is living with E. Cuniculi, which is a parasite that can cause serious health problems in rabbits. Many domestic rabbits are carriers, but relatively few manifest the neurological or physical symptoms that can have such serious effects on your rabbit’s quality of life.

Regular testing and all her daily medications are the exact opposite of "cheap"— but she is absolutely worth every penny. She is over 9 years old, and we want her to live as long and as comfortably as she can.

'Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom' is either a braindead movie that will make you root for the monsters or fun escapism, depending on which critic you ask

jurassic world fallen kingdom

"Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" doesn't come to theaters for another two weeks, but early reviews suggest audiences will either hate it or love it.

Critics are split on the sequel to 2015's "Jurassic World," which is currently the fifth-highest-grossing movie of all time (it was recently topped by "Avengers: Infinity War"). That's a tough act to follow for "Fallen Kingdom," and while some critics feel it is an improvement over its predecessor, others had very strong negative reactions.

Indiewire's David Ehrlich in a tweet on Tuesday called the movie "a tedious, infuriating, and braindead ordeal."

But the movie stands at 66% on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes as of Wednesday morning, so not all of the reviews are that harsh.

Below are more reactions to "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom," which comes to theaters June 22:

"At one point, I began to get excited that this might prove to be an angrier film than its predecessor, more pointed ... but it all just hangs there like so much else in this movie, undeveloped concepts that could one day be turned into a genuinely exciting, surprising film."

Bilge Ebiri, The Village Voice

"Pratt is a charismatic, good-looking, funny guy, and he might be a real star if he could only get one or two good roles and sever himself from lucrative formula junk like this."

Dan Callahan, The Wrap

"If Bayona was stealthily trying to make a blockbuster where we root for the monsters to eat everyone, he couldn’t have done a much better job."

8 gross reasons why you should finally stop biting your nails

nail biting

We all have bad habits that we could stand to lose — stress eating, nail biting, smoking, you name it. But some habits can be more detrimental than others.

Nail biting, or onychophagia (as those in the medical field call it), is a common habit that affects 20–30% of people across all age groups.

Although biting your nails may seem harmless, it can lead to some seriously nasty health effects.

In fact, a 28-year-old father in England reportedly almost died after biting his nails. After biting off some skin around his nail, the man’s finger allegedly got infected and led to a life-threatening immune system response called sepsis.

Although he recovered, it’s a lesson that a nail-biting habit can lead to some dire consequences.

Here are eight reasons why you should stop biting your nails … like immediately.

1. Your teeth aren’t built for all that stress.

If you’ve had braces or a retainer but still bite your nails, you’re canceling out your good dental practices with a potentially destructive practice. Biting your nails puts a lot of stress on the teeth that are used. Habitual nail-biting can cause teeth to move out of place, break or chip and tooth enamel to splinter, according to the University of Connecticut Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine.

2. It can disfigure your gums.

If you care about your smile, you’ll stop your nervous nail-biting habit on the spot. In addition to possibly damaging your teeth, nail biting can eventually result in gum disease and gum recession. Jagged and sharp edges of fingernails can introduce bacteria to the crevices of your teeth and serve as the source of sore, damaged and infected gum tissue, according to a study in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics.

3. A plethora of gross germs call have found a home under your nails.

Underneath your fingernails is a breeding ground for all sorts of germs, including bacteria like salmonella and E. coli and those that cause the common cold. When you bite down on your nails, those bacteria are likely to wind up in your mouth. And when that happens, it can cause serious infections in your stomach. A study from 2007 done by the Faculty of Dentistry at Atatürk University in Erzurum, Turkey found that 76% of nail-biters had E. Coli and other dangerous bacteria in their saliva whereas only 26.5% of non-nail biters had the same bacteria in their mouths.

The 10 best horror movies of the year so far — and where you can watch them

annihilation movie natalie portman

We're officially one-quarter of the way into 2018, and while the real world remains more horrifying than anything we've seen onscreen there have already been more than a few stellar horror movies capable of raising our arm-hairs and chilling our blood.

Our best-of lists are typically saved for the end of the year, but I'm offering up a quarterly review of sorts in the hopes of pointing your eyeballs towards some great titles that are currently playing or will be very soon.

To that end, this list encompasses 2018's best horror films — so far — meaning it includes new movies that have been released this year in theaters (or straight to VOD/DVD) as well as titles that previously played festivals and now have an officially scheduled release date in the near future.

The only other requirement? They have to be movies I've actually seen. (Sorry John Krasinski's "A Quiet Place.")

10. "The Lodgers"

Gothic chillers used to be the norm with genre films, but they went out of favor decades ago. One comes along periodically, though, and this year we've already had two. (Another great one is right below.)

This Irish tale of dark family secrets and the supernatural tells a visually inventive, creepy, and sexy tale about guilt, ghosts, and a gross brother wanting to boink his admittedly hot sister. It’s the best movie that could have also been called "The Shape of Water."

Available to rent/buy now on VOD.

9. "Marrowbone"

The writer of "The Orphanage" and "The Impossible" delivers another tale of children in danger with four siblings pretending they're not orphans in order to avoid catching the eye of social services.

It's the least of their problems, though, as something in their house wants out. It's a smartly told chiller with a fantastic young cast including George MacKay, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, and Mia Goth.

Hits theaters/VOD starting April 13.

8. "The Ritual"

Director David Bruckner's solo feature debut may have premiered on the small screen (via Netflix), but it's plenty big when it comes to the horror. It sends four friends into the woods one year after a fifth friend's murder, but as devastating as that loss was they're in for far, far worse.

It's a creepy tale that takes full advantage of its cold landscape, and it features possibly the best creature design of the past few years. Seriously, the beast alone is reason enough to watch.

Currently streaming on Netflix.

How the Airbus A380 superjumbo went from an airline status symbol to being sold for spare parts in just 10 years

Singapore Airlines Airbus A380

  • The Airbus A380 is struggling to find takers in the second-hand market.
  • Dr. Peters Group announced that it will strip down two off-lease Airbus A380s and sell them as spare parts.
  • The German investment firm expects the pair of ex-Singapore Airlines planes to generate $80 million apiece.

The Airbus A380 entered service in 2008 with great fanfare. A decade later, the arrival of an Airbus Superjumbo remains an event to behold.

But, the A380 has not been the game-changer Airbus had hoped it would become when it conceived the massive double-decker. This is especially the case on the financial front.

For much of its service life, Airbus has struggled to find airlines willing to put the A380 into service. And now aircraft leasing companies are facing the same struggles. In fact, the market for second hand, off-lease A380s is virtually non-existent.

On Tuesday, Dr. Peters Group announced that two of its Airbus A380s will be stripped down and sold for spare parts after the company failed to find any takers for its second-hand superjumbos.

"The market for the A380-800 aircraft type has not developed positively in recent years," Dr. Peters Group CEO Anselm Gehling said in a statement. "Some airlines have canceled orders from Airbus, while others have opted for smaller long-haul jets."

The German investment firm expects the two ex-Singapore Airlines planes to generate $80 million of income each.

The depreciation is fairly jarring when you consider that a new A380 carried a $300 million price tag back in 2007 when these planes were built. While a new A380 today has a list price of $445.6 million.

According to Reuters, the $40 million it costs to refurbish a used A380's interior is a major turn off for many in the market for a second-hand superjumbo.

The two soon-to-be-disassembled planes are believed to be the third and fifth A380s ever built. A third ex-Singapore A380 did find a new a home. The sixth A380s built will enter into service with Portuguese charter airline Hi-Fly this summer

On April 27, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. local time, the first Airbus A380 prototype opened up the throttles of its four massive turbofan engines.

As the superjumbo took off from Airbus' facility in Toulouse, France, the largest commercial airliner around was actually flying.

But the A380's story starts decades earlier.

These haunting photo overlays capture the horrors of D-Day

d-day before after

The D-Day invasion, code named Operation Overlord, was the largest seaborne invasion in history.

Almost 5,000 landing and assault craft accompanied by 289 escort vessels and 277 minesweepers from Canada, the US, Britain, and Australia took part in the operation. The Allies suffered 226,386 casualties, but it proved a decisive moment in the war.

Suddenly, the Nazis were fighting a two-front war in Europe, leading to a division in their forces across multiple flanks. But the cost of D-Day, in both human lives and devastation of the surrounding regions of France, was immense.

The following photos from Getty photographer Peter Macdiarmid show an amazing juxtaposition of images from the affected areas of modern France with photos of the invasion from 1944 overlaid on top.
