Mindhunter Netflix2 final

While serial killer-inspired shows like "Dexter" and "Criminal Minds" focus on fictional murders, other programs don't shy away from taking a closer look at real killers and their crimes.

Below are just a few of the many shows that have been inspired by real-life murders, and where you can watch them.

"Mindhunter" is a fictional show based on the unit at the FBI that helped establish criminal profiling by talking to serial killers.

According to Vulture, the show is based on the true story of former FBI agent John E. Douglas, who pioneered criminal profiling at the FBI.

The Netflix series follows the fictional agent Holden Ford, played by Jonathan Groff, as he interviews serial killers who are based on real-life murderers. The infamous characters that appear on the show include BTK killer Dennis Rader, serial killer Ed Kemper, and "lust killer"Jerry Brudos.

Two infamous New Orleans murderers inspired parts of "American Horror Story: Coven."

Season three of the show "American Horror Story" features two infamous New Orleans-based characters: Madame Delphine LaLaurie and the Axeman. Vice reports that Madame LaLaurie was a wealthy white woman who is believed to have tortured and killed numerous slaves in the attic of her Royal Street home (she disappeared before she could be tried for the crimes). Her character was portrayed by Kathy Bates.

In the same season, the serial killer Axeman was featured. The Axeman terrorized NoLa in the early 20th century, killing four people and leaving others seriously wounded, according to Smithsonian Magazine. His character was played by Danny Huston.

This isn’t the only season inspired by real murderers, others include a killer clown based on John Wayne Gacy and even a dinner with killers like Jeffrey Dahmer and Aileen Wuornos. You can watch several seasons of "AHS" on Netflix.

"I Am the Night" is a new miniseries inspired by the Black Dahlia.

Formerly known as "One Day She’ll Darken," this TNT drama is a limited series that is directed by "Wonder Woman" director Patty Jenkins and stars Chris Pine. The show is based on a true crime story that follows the daughter of suspected, though never formally charged, Black Dahlia murderer, Dr. George Hodel, as she discovers her family’s dark past.

The show will premiere in January 2019.

8 foods you didn't know you could buy at Trader Joe's

trader joesIf you're a Trader Joe's fan, it's safe to say that most are aware of their famous products like the cauliflower pizza crust, dark chocolate peanut butter cups, and cookie butter, but there are some other, lesser-known, items that are worth a mention, too.

We rounded up all the hidden gem food items you didn't know you could buy at Trader Joe's.

Green Jackfruit in Brine is great for vegetarian recipes.

Jackfruit has a mild, sweet fruity flavor similar to mangos or apples, with a hearty texture that resembles shredded meat. In addition to the jackfruit tasting great, the fruit has 3 grams of protein per cup and a good amount of fiber.

Now you can purchase it canned and ready to eat or cook with at Trader Joe's.

Wild Salmon Jerky is unique and tasty.

Trader Joe's offers an entire shelf of different animal and flavor jerkys, but probably one of the most unique options is the salmon jerky. The omega 3 fatty acids and high protein content make this a really filling snack on the go. The fish is slightly sweet from the maple syrup, brown sugar, and molasses used to flavor it before drying.

Their Birthday Cake Bar will make you want to celebrate.

Yeah, this is as good as it sounds and basically tastes like a pressed slice of funfetti cake. The bar is a base of cake flavored white chocolate with notes of vanilla cookie and colorful sprinkles mixed in. The sprinkles in the bar get their color from natural ingredients like beet juice and turmeric, so the candy bar is basically a salad, right? Maybe not, but it is delicious.

The best electric razors you can buy

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

best electric razor

The Insider Pick:

  • If you don’t mind spending a little extra, an electric razor can give you a close shave, while also helping you perfectly groom your facial hair and more.

  • The Braun Series 7 is our top pick because it is powerful, versatile, and effective at removing facial and other body hair.

A few generations ago, when you wanted a really close shave, you’d head to the barber shop, where you’d put your life in the barber’s hands. The barber would hold a straight razor inches from your jugular, and then tell you to relax.

Fat chance.

Fortunately, today you can achieve a close shave at home using electric razors, which remove the possibility of slicing your skin open or worse. Electric razors can’t quite match the closeness of the shave you’d receive from a talented barber, but they’re far more convenient and safe than the straight razor.

An electric razor uses spinning blades or blades that oscillate back and forth to cut the coarse hairs on the face tightly to the skin.

Guards surround the blades on the razor to protect your skin from the moving blades. Most guards also contain slots or holes that catch the hairs and lift them upward, so the blades can clip them more effectively.

The heads on the electric shavers will flex singularly from each other, allowing the razor to match the contours of your face, which helps you achieve a closer shave.

One of the best features of modern electric razors is the ability to use them in wet or dry environments, as well as with shaving gel or foam.

Foil vs. rotary electric razors

The primary choice you’ll have with electric razors is the design you want. Some people prefer a foil-style shaver, while others like a rotary-style shaver.

  • Foil: The foil electric shaver contains oscillating blades that move back and forth at high speeds. These blades are covered with guards that lift hair for cutting and that protect the skin. A foil razor will often have a few separate cutting blades that flex independently to match the contours of your face. However, because a foil head has a rectangular shape, it might not match your face as well as a rotary razor.
  • Rotary: The rotary razor has round blades that spin. You’ll receive protection from the spinning rotary blades with a slotted guard that sits atop the blades and helps to lift the hairs so they’re easier to cut. The heads flex in multiple directions, giving you a close shave by hugging the contours of your face. However, rotary heads are more difficult to clean after shaving versus the foil shaver.

Here are the best electric razors you can buy:

Read on in the slides below to check out our top picks.

The best electric razor overall

Why you'll love it: The Braun Series 7 is able to “read” your beard, automatically adjusting its power to give you the closest shave ever.

The Braun Series 7 may just be the most useful item in a man’s bathroom. This electric razor is capable of determining how thick your facial hair is in order to automatically adjust its power, so you’ll be able to get a clean and even shave in just one pass.

This magical power is brought to you courtesy of Braun’s Sonic and AutoSense technology, and when coupled with its eight-directional flexible shaving head, the shaver moves with the contours of your face and neck for a careful, close shave.

Thanks to MicroMotion technology, you’ll be able to move each element of the shaving system independently across delicate or difficult to shave areas like your neck or Adam’s apple. MacroMotion, on the other hand, lets the head of the razor pivot up to 40 degrees, so you can turn your razor any which way as you make your way across your face.

Taken together, these two features mean that you can make quick work of your morning shave, confident that you haven’t missed a spot or left any stubble.

The Braun Series 7 comes with a Clean and Charge Station with cleaning solution, a cleaning brush, and a travel case, which makes maintaining the razor as easy as maintaining your own hygiene.

The Series 7 is also entirely waterproof, so you can even bring it in the shower with you or rinse it off in the sink when you’re done. — Lulu Chang

Pros: Quality construction, waterproof, provides a great, close shave in just one pass

Cons: Some customers have reported a slower shave

Buy the Braun Electric Shaver, Series 7 790cc Men's Electric Foil Shaver/Electric Razor for $176.99 (originally $289.99)

The best high-end electric razor

Why you'll love it: The Braun Series 9290CC offers all of the latest design features found in an electric razor to make it more comfortable to use, while also yielding a close shave.

The Braun Series 9290CC electric foil shaver is an upgrade to both Series 7 and older Series 9 Braun shavers with the latest design features. Although you’ll pay extra for these features, the 9290CC is well worth the extra money.

The cutting head consists of four separate areas. The outer areas cut close to the skin, while the two inner areas lift and cut hairs. That way, you catch hairs that are lying flat and those that are growing in an odd direction.

If you haven’t liked the feel of pivoting heads in electric razors in the past because they didn’t fit the contours of your face well, don't worry about that issue with the 9290CC. Braun included a 10-direction pivoting head that provides all of the flexibility you’ll need.

As one final advantage over its predecessors, the 9290CC has one of the largest heads found on an electric shaver, allowing you to finish shaving a bit more quickly than with other electric razors. This Braun razor will work in wet or dry conditions, and you can use it with shaving foam or gel.

Expert reviewers like this razor, too. Techlicious says the Braun 9290CC is the best electric shaver currently on the market, while Man Tripping likes using the Braun 9290CC as a travel razor, because it ships with many extras, including a case that keeps stray trimmings from flying loosely in your suitcase.

Amazon shoppers give the 9290CC razor great reviews, too. One buyer named JS says the Braun 9290CC is especially good at trimming stubborn and extra-coarse white and gray hairs in your beard, and it also excels at personal grooming in other places. — Kyle Schurman

Pros: Flexible 10-direction pivoting head, offers four different cutting areas for close shaves, excels at trimming stubborn hairs on the face, has a large shaving head to complete the job faster

Cons: Plastic design in the razor body that feels flimsy, carries an extremely high price point

Buy the Braun 9290CC Electric Razor on Amazon for $249.97

The best rotary electric razor

Why you'll love it: The Philips Norelco 9700 boasts eight-directional ContourDetect technology and V-Track Precision Blades for a smooth, comfortable shave.

If you’re looking for an all-in-one razor, look no further than the Philips Norelco 9700. Thanks to the ability to add attachments like trimmers and facial brushes, this is one razor that takes care of everything for you, making your morning grooming routine a breeze.

Key to the 9700’s effectiveness is its ContourDectect technology and V-Track Precision Blades, which are able to cut each individual facial hair, while the three-head shaver tracks closely to your face, getting rid of any and all excess hair.

This razor is able to achieve a remarkably clean cut on each individual hair, but won’t leave you with cuts or scrapes. That’s because the three-headed shaver design allows each head to move in eight directions, contouring to your face and catching more hairs in a single pass than other razors on the market.

Moreover, the Philips Norelco 9700’s V-Track Precision Blades carefully cut hairs from two directions, so you’re actually trimming and not pulling hair from your face.

This razor also comes with a SmartClickc precision trimmer so that you can finish off your grooming by never skimping on the details. You’ll have complete control over the blade, and the ability to easily replace it once it wears dull.

There’s also a large digital display that shows the battery level, cleaning indicator, replacement head indicator, and more at a glance. It’s also remarkably ergonomic in your hand, so shaving is actually comfortable on all counts. — Lulu Chang

Pros: Superior shaving experience; easy-to-read display; extremely close and comfortable shave

Cons: Pricey storage case does not store attachments

10 people reveal how much they have in savings, and how they got there

Savings

  • Saving money every month is crucial to reaching important financial milestones and protecting yourself from an unexpected job loss or other emergencies.
  • Different savings methods work for different people.
  • Here, 10 people reveal how much money they have in savings, and how they did it.

Saving money is important if you want to reach both short-term and long-term financial goals. For example, people are saving for retirement, a vacation, or to build up an emergency fund — or all three.

Saving, of course, is easier said than done.

According to a 2017 GOBankingRates survey, 57% of Americans have less than $1,000 in liquid savings — much less than an unexpected emergency could cost. Northwestern Mutualsurveyed 2,003 adults 18 and up and found that 21% of Americans have no retirement savings at all.

Krista Neeley, managing vice president ofAppreciation Financial, told Business Insider that a great way to jump-start your short-term savings is to set up your bank account to auto-draft a specific dollar amount from your checking to savings on a specific date, just like you're paying a bill.

For long-term savings, Neeley said that saving in your employer's retirement plan, where you contribute money through a payroll deduction, is a good idea. "The benefit of this is that you can save for the future without even seeing the money leave your bank account," she said.

How much someone has in their savings account is going to vary based on their income, goals, and lifestyle. Here, 10 people reveal how much they have in savings and how they got there. The answers have been edited for length and clarity.

SEE ALSO: 11 financial experts share the best money advice they've ever received

1. Alex, 20, $11,000

I'm a college student and the owner of Unstung Media. I have over $11,000 in savings currently, and I received absolutely zero dollars from my family in funding my savings account.

I've been working since I turned 15 years old, which helped build my savings, as I had no bills to pay in high school. When I entered college, I started my business, which helped me earn about eight times per hour what I could make at a typical student job.

I've never splurged on fancy clothing, a new car, or a vacation, and that's how I've saved over $11,000 at 20 years old.

2. Daniella, 28, $24,000

My wife and I have been able to save $24,000 since the beginning of this year, thanks to the side hustle I started about a year ago. My blog, iliketodabble.com, is about achieving financial freedom through side hustles and aggressive saving, and has helped me apply the same lessons to my own life.

We were saving before this year, but those funds ended up going to emergencies and a new vehicle. We started the New Year with an empty savings account — but my side hustle has gotten us to $24,000.

Additionally, my wife has a side hustle flipping guitars on eBay. We use our main income for bills and necessities, and everything else goes into savings or back into the side businesses. We also use budgeting sheets and look at everything we spend and where it's going to see if there is any room for improvement each month.

3. Rob, 51, $3,500

I have about $3,500 in savings, which is kind of pathetic for a 51-year-old person. My savings has been practically non-existent my entire adult life, until a year ago, when I finally promised myself not to touch it.

I fund my savings with an automatic $50 weekly transfer from my checking account, and I have for years — but I always ended up using it for vacations or unexpected expenses. It never went much above $1,000.

Finally, last year, I decided to get a prepaid credit card that I also fund at $50/week. I use the card for my unexpected expenses and haven't touched my savings since then. I am not sure how long I can continue this, but it feels good knowing I can cover most emergencies.

Wal Mart Top Rated Toys 2018 27

  • Walmart has unveiled its top toys of 2018 list, where it enlisted kids and "toy influencers" to predict the toys every kid will want this holiday.
  • This year Walmart's list has 40 toys, on categories like collectibles, toys delivered from entertainment properties, big brands, and innovation.
  • Walmart's VP of toys, Anne Marie Kehoe, said that Walmart is greatly expanding its toy assortment  with "more than we’ve ever carried before."

Walmart is already kicking off the holiday shopping season — this year, with a bang.

The retailer has announced it will be expanding its assortment of toys before the holiday season kicks off with "more toys than we've ever carried before," Walmart VP of toys Anne Marie Kehoe said in a press conference announcing the plans.

Walmart will be expanding its selection by 40% online, and 30% of the toys it's stocking in stores will be brand new. The store will also be expanding its toy selection in stores with more toys and more aisles to stock them.

This year, Walmart will have 1,000 toys exclusive to the retailer, with 300 that are brand new and never-before-seen.

As usual, the company did its research to find out the top toys for the holiday before the busiest retail season rolls around again. The company brought in hundreds of kids to test and play with dozens of toys so the store could see what resonated the most as their favorites. Walmart also enlisted the help of some "toy influencers" to help it decide what to put on its list.

Based on that, Walmart selected the top 40 toys it thinks every kid will covet this year. That's up from the selection of 25 toys in previous years.

"We're proud of having kids help us select these toys. They’re the ones that make it happen and show us the way," Kehoe said.

This year, many of the changes Walmart is making to its toy section, which it is calling America’s Best Toy Shop, are permanent and will last even after the holiday season is over.

Abandoned skyscrapers around the world and the stories behind them

Ryugyong Hotel

Not all buildings that appear impressive in a city skyline are as polished on the inside. Cities around the world contain abandoned or unfinished skyscrapers due to financial crises that forced the end of construction, civil war fighting that turned the buildings into battlegrounds, or reasons that remain a mystery.

Here are 10 abandoned skyscrapers around the world and how they got to be that way.

Ghost Tower — Bangkok, Thailand

The Sathorn Unique is popularly known as Thailand's "Ghost Tower" by thrill-seeking travelers who are willing to risk trespassing to explore it.

Construction on the 49-floor building began in the 1990s but ceased in 1997 due to the Asian Financial Crisis, according to Atlas Obscura.

Urban explorers make their way through the building's unfinished rooms littered with debris and covered in graffiti to enjoy a sweeping view of Bangkok.

Sterick Building — Memphis, Tennessee

Known as the "Queen of Memphis," the Sterick Building was completed in 1929 and was the tallest skyscraper in Memphis until 1962 (it's 365 feet tall and has 29 floors). It was designed by Wyatt C. Hedrick and financed by Ross E. Sterling— hence "The Sterick," according to Memphis Heritage.

The building once held 2,000 workers in addition to a barber shop, beauty parlor, bank, and pharmacy.

But as the building's ownership changed hands multiple times, companies began to move out. By 1986, it was empty.

Centro Financiero Confinanzas — Caracas, Venezuela

Centro Financiero Confinanzas is an empty 45-story building known as the Torre de David, or Tower of David.

Construction began in 1990 but stopped due to a financial crisis in Venezuela and the death of the developer J. David Brillembourg who the building is named for, according to Atlas Obscura.

Some 3,000 people took up residence in the concrete shell of a building, earning the building the distinction of "the world's tallest slum." All were evicted in 2014.

What people put on their toast in 10 countries around the world

artisanal toast the mill san francisco 4873

A piece of warm toast is a canvas for endless possibilities. Whether your appetite ranges from a savory meat and cheese dish to a deliciously sweet condensed milk fare, there's a taste for everyone.

Here are some delicious things countries adorn their toast with around the world.

France is well-known for mastering the simple toast.

You'll almost always find a warm baguette loaf in a traditional French breakfast. Your favorite bakery most likely sells out of them before the start of the workday. Residents of France typically dress their baguette with jam.

The Parisian pastry chef at Le Meurice, Cédric Grolet told Vogue, "The baguette is definitely classically French. The best way to eat it is to cut it in two, add some butter and jam — and a little chocolat chaud, too."

In Singapore and Malaysia, kaya toast is the norm.

A staple in Singapore and Malaysia is kaya toast. To make the decadent toast, bread is sliced then either charcoal-grilled or toasted. Butter and kaya, a traditional jam made from coconut and eggs, are then spread on each slice and they are sandwiched together.

If in Italy, try "fettunta."

Fettunta from "fetta" (slice) and "unta" (oily) means an "oily slice." To make fettunta, bread is sliced then toasted. While still warm, it's rubbed with garlic and sprinkled with sea salt and extra virgin olive oil. It's essentially Italian garlic bread.

9 orgasm myths you need to stop believing

$
0
0

congrats on the sex

When you first start learning about sex, it can seem as though an orgasm is simple and easy to attain.

But for many people, this isn't exactly the case. Orgasms are often trickier and more elusive than sex ed and pornography can make them appear. This can lead to feelings of self-doubt or guilt when real-life sex doesn't go quite so easily.

Here, certified sex therapists explain what you should actually believe about orgasms, and which ideas you need to leave behind.

Myth 1: Everyone has an orgasm when they have sex.

Because sex is often portrayed in the media as orgasm-centric, it can be easy to assume there is something wrong with you if you don't have an orgasm every time you have sex.

But according to sex therapist Rachel Hoffman, orgasms and sex don't always have to be tied to one another.

"The emphasis on an orgasm creates an abundant amount of anxiety in relationships and in sexual interactions," Hoffman told INSIDER. "We need to shift the focus [in sex] away from orgasm to pleasure. Many individuals might feel a great deal of pleasure but not reach orgasm."

Orgasms can come without penetrative sex through masturbation and foreplay. And, given that only about 18% of people with vaginas can reach orgasm through intercourse alone, according to a study published in the  Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy, sex itself may often come without orgasms.

This doesn't mean you should completely give up on ever having an orgasm when you have sex, but it also doesn't mean you need to consider a sex a failure if it doesn't end in an orgasm.

Myth 2: There is only one kind of orgasm.

Some believe there are a number of orgasms — G-spot, vaginal, clitoral — a person with a vagina can have. Others say there is only one kind of orgasm, and anything else is an impossible-to-grasp myth.

In truth? It's complicated.

"Experts are divided on this question," Jessa Zimmerman, a sex therapist and author of "Sex Without Stress," told INSIDER. "It's important to understand that the clitoris is actually a much larger organ than most of us realize. What we see on the outside is just the tip, or glans, of the clitoris and some of the hood or cover. It extends into the body with two long legs that run along the vagina. So no matter what genital stimulation you receive that results in orgasm, it is probably activating the clitoris, inside or out."

So, in that respect, all orgasms can technically be considered the same, because they come from the same source.

On the other hand, many people with vaginas say certain kinds of orgasms feel different, depending on the part of their body that gets touched and the kind of stimulation received.

"There is a complex of tissue that can be stimulated, the clitoral-urethral-vaginal complex (what has often been referred to as the G spot), that some women enjoy and respond to," Zimmerman told INSIDER. "In that sense, some women experience something different, and it makes sense to them to think of it as a different type of orgasm."

In the end, it doesn't really matter. If you feel that you experience many different kinds of orgasms, that's great. If you've only ever experienced one, that's also great.

"What matters is to find what pleases you and to share that with your partner," Zimmerman told INSIDER. "There is no right or wrong."

Myth 3: There's something wrong with you if you can't have an orgasm.

Some people have trouble reaching orgasm. If you are among them, it's important to know that there is nothing wrong with you.

That said, there are things you can do to try and make having an orgasm easier, should you feel so inclined. The first step is asking yourself some questions.

"My first question would be: what have you attempted to achieve an orgasm?" Hoffman told INSIDER. "Are you able to achieve an orgasm through masturbation? There are many factors that can play into the inability to reach orgasm including anxiety, medication, or stage of life changes (menopause, weight loss or gain, stress at work, etc.)."

Self-diagnosing such issues on your own can be tricky. For help, it might be useful to visit a sex therapist.

new york times then and now

Newspapers have changed the course of history with explosive investigative stories. They've also changed their format, style, and content over the years.

Here's what 10 famous newspapers looked like when they were first published — and what they look like today.

The New York Times was established in 1851.

"We publish today the first issue of the New-York Daily Times, and we intend to issue it every morning (Sundays excepted) for an indefinite number of years to come," the first issue read.

The paper has broken countless stories with enormous impact such as Harvey Weinstein's abuses that sparked the #MeToo movement.

It shortened its name from the New York Daily Times to the New-York Times in 1857, and dropped the hyphen in 1896. Of course, it now also publishes a Sunday edition.

The Wall Street Journal was founded in 1889.

It was founded by Charles H. Dow of Dow Jones & Company.

The International Space Station sprung a leak yesterday — and it shows why a space junk disaster could cut off human access to space

space junk debris trash orbiting earth kessler syndrome effect event shutterstock_233084350

The International Space Station (ISS) sprung a "minute pressure leak" on Wednesday, NASA said.

The astronauts on board have since found and fixed the source of the leak: a hole about 2 millimeters wide in the Soyuz spacecraft attached to the Russian part of the space station.

NASA said in a press release that the six-person crew were never in danger, and that the cabin pressure is now holding steady.

"Flight controllers in Houston are continuing to monitor station’s cabin pressure in the wake of the repair,"NASA said.

No one has officially named the cause of the leak, but one culprit could be a tiny piece of space junk.

The US government tracks about 23,000 human-made objects floating in space that are larger than a softball. These satellites and chunks of debris zip around the planet at more than 17,500 mph — roughly 10 times the speed of a bullet. Until April 1, the list of space junk even included China's school-bus-size Tiangong-1 space station, which burned up in Earth's atmosphere.

However, there are millions of smaller pieces of space junk— sometimes called micrometeoroids — orbiting Earth, too.

"There's lots of smaller stuff we can see but can't put an orbit, a track on it," Jesse Gossner, an orbital-mechanics engineer who teaches at the US Air Force's Advanced Space Operations School, told Business Insider.

As companies and government agencies launch more spacecraft, concerns are growing about the likelihood of a "Kessler syndrome" event: a cascading series of orbital collisions that may curtail human access to space for hundreds of years.

Here's who is keeping tracking of space junk, how satellite collisions are avoided, and what is being done to prevent disaster on the final frontier.

This story has been updated. It was originally published on March 27, 2018.

DON'T MISS: Elon Musk's plan to blanket Earth in high-speed internet may face a big threat: China

Thousands of launches since the dawn of the Space Race have led to a growing field of space debris. Most space junk is found in two zones: low-Earth orbit, which is about 250 miles up, and geostationary orbit, about 22,300 miles up.

In addition to 23,000 objects the size of a softball or larger — like rocket stages, satellites, and even old spacesuits — there are more than 650,000 objects that are softball-to-fingernail-size.

Another 170 million bits of debris as small as a pencil tip may also exist — including things like explosive bolts and paint flecks.

Source: ESA

Countless pieces of tiny debris were added to orbit in 2007, when China intentionally smashed one of its old satellites with a "kill vehicle." Then in 2009, an old Russian satellite and US satellite collided, adding even more dangerous junk.

From the Empire State Building to the World Trade Center and beyond, some of the world’s most well-recognized buildings have acquired their fame with their skyscraping qualities. Since the 1930's, the record height for a skyscraper has jumped almost 1,500 feet.

Since then, have you wondered what skyscraper has topped the world's skylines during the year you were born? Find out below, based on the highest architectural element (a.k.a., antennae and spindles included).

All information was gathered from Emporis's history of the world's tallest skyscrapers

From 1931-1972, the Empire State Building was the tallest skyscraper in the world.

At 102 stories, the 1,250-foot Empire State Building was not only a landmark in Manhattan but the tallest skyscraper in the world.

New York City remained home to the tallest skyscraper when the World Trade Center was completed in 1972.

One World Trade was the tallest of the original seven buildings in the complex at 1,368 feet.

Chicago’s Willis Tower, then known as the Sears Tower, became the tallest in 1974.

Chicago’s skyline hosted the world’s tallest skyscraper — 1,450 feet — for almost 25 years. After its worldwide reign, it remained the tallest in the Western Hemisphere until the new One World Trade building was built in 2014.

  • Life Is Beautiful is a lifestyle blog created by Sarah Tyau.
  • On her blog and other social media platforms like Facebook, Tyau shares before and after photos of old clothing that she has transformed into brand new outfits.
  • Tyau also shares instructional videos on YouTube that show you how to turn your unused clothes into trendy pieces.
  • The mom of three began sewing seriously at the age of 24, years after she first learned in junior high school.
  • According to Tyau, sewing is a valuable skill that can be practiced by anyone who is willing to learn.

In this fast-fashion world, it's often far easier to buy trendy new clothes than to repurpose old garments you have.

But Sarah Tyau— a mother and blogger who transforms old clothing into new outfits for her family — might make you consider learning how to sew.

Tyau has turned hundreds of old garments into new looks.

The mom of three frequently shares photos of her clothing transformations on Instagram.

Usually modeled by herself and her children, Tyau's before-and-after shots are mesmerizing.

In the caption for each of her Instagram posts, the lifestyle blogger typically includes details about the transformation process and explains how she found the original item of clothing.

Turning old or discarded materials into something useful is known as upcycling.

According to Tyau, almost every "before" piece you see on her blog or Instagram has been thrifted, recycled from her own wardrobe, or given to her by a relative or friend.

6 wild facts about the deadly creator of SEAL Team 6

richard marcinko

These days, Richard Marcinko is a business instructor, author, and motivational speaker. In his earlier years, "Demo Dick" was the United States' premier counterterrorism operator. Marcinko enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1958 and eventually worked his way up to the rank of commander, graduated with degrees in international relations and political science, and earned 34 medals and citations, including a Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, and four Bronze Stars. But that's just his military resume.

Even among the ranks of American special operators, Marcinko, his record, and his reputation are all exceptional — and it's easy to see why. At 77, he is still training business executives as well as U.S. and foreign hostage rescue teams. He even worked as a consultant on the FOX television show 24. His memoir, Rogue Warrior, is a New York Times bestseller.

"I'm good at war," Marcinko once told People Magazine. "Even in Vietnam, the system kept me from hunting and killing as many of the enemy as I would have liked."

1. North Vietnam had a bounty on his head

As a platoon leader in Vietnam, Marcinko and his SEALs were so successful, the North Vietnamese Army took notice. His assault on Ilo Ilo Island was called the most successful SEAL operation in the Mekong Delta. During his second tour, Marcinko and SEAL Team Two teamed up with Army Special Forces during the Tet Offensive at Chau Doc. The SEALs rescued hospital personnel caught in the crossfire as an all-out urban brawl raged around them.

Because of Marcinko's daring and success, the NVA placed a 50,000 piastre bounty on his head, payable to anyone who could prove they killed the SEAL leader. Obviously, they never paid out that bounty.

2. He was rejected by the Marine Corps

Marcinko joined the military at 18 but, surprisingly (to some), he didn't first opt to join the Navy. His first stop was the Marine Corps, who rejected him outright because he did not graduate from high school. So Marcinko, who would leave as a Commander, enlisted in the Navy. He later became an officer after graduating from the Navy's postgraduate school, earning his commission in 1965.

3. He designed the Navy's counterterrorism operation

You know you've made it when they make a video game about your life story.

After the tragic failure of Operation Eagle Claw, the U.S. attempt to free hostages being held by students in Iran, the U.S. Navy and its special operations structure decided that they needed an overhaul. Marcinko was one of those who helped design the new system. His answer was the creation of SEAL Team Six.

15 important jobs women have never held

  • Women have held many roles that were previously reserved for men.
  • But there are still more firsts to accomplish.
  • From US president to CEO of a top-5 Fortune 500 company, here are 15 important jobs a woman has never held.

Women have come a long way since they started joining the workforce in large numbers in the late 19th century, and since then there have been many historic firsts.

In law and politics, Annette Adams became the first female US attorney general in 1918. Rebecca Felton was sworn in as the first female US Senator in 1922. And Sandra Day O'Connor became the first female Supreme Court Justice in 1981.

In business, Lettie Pate Whitehead became the first woman to serve as a director of a major corporation, Coca-Cola, in 1934. Katharine Graham became the first female CEO of a Fortune 500 company, The Washington Post, in 1972. And in 1999, Carly Fiorina was the first woman to lead a Dow 30 company, Hewlett-Packard.

There are still more firsts to come.

With the help of Catalyst, a nonprofit organization that promotes inclusive workplaces, and the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University, here are important jobs a woman has never held:

DON'T MISS: Women are rarely picked to be CEO, and it's not because they're all dropping out to have babies

A woman has never been the President of the United States

Victoria Claflin Woodhull, a leader of the woman's suffrage movement, became the first female candidate for president of the United States in 1872. African-American abolitionist and writer Frederick Douglass was her running mate.

Since then, several other women have run for US president, including "Surprise Party" candidate Gracie Allen, who ran a satirical campaign in 1940, and current Democratic presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton.

Former Secretary of State and US Senator Hillary Clinton came close when she won the popular vote but lost the presidency in 2016

Since 1782, several other women have run for US president, including "Surprise Party" candidate Gracie Allen, who ran a satirical campaign in 1940, and most recently Former Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, who lost to President Donald Trump in 2016.

Though the US came close to joining one of the 59 other countries that have had a woman leader, women have yet to shatter the country's ultimate glass ceiling.

A woman has never been the vice president of the United States

Geraldine Anne Ferraro, a lawyer, Democratic Party politician, and member of the US House of Representatives, became the first female vice-presidential candidate for a major American political party in 1984.

Democratic presidential candidate Walter Mondale selected her to be his running mate in the election against Republican candidate Ronald Reagan; they lost.

2018 08 01_12 54 22

College football is back and, as usual, a ton of teams will have changes to their uniforms.

The changes range from minor tweaks to full uniform makeovers as teams seek new excitement on the field. The big winner appears to be Adidas who added a bunch of FBS schools to their program.

Here is a rundown of the changes we have seen so far, with a lot of assistance from the invaluable Uni-Watch.

AIR FORCE — The Falcons have a new alternate uniform honoring the AC-130 aircraft.

ARIZONA STATE — The Sun Devils have a new head coach in Herm Edwards, and it appears they are going with a cleaner jersey. The sleeve stripes are gone, as well as the wordmark on the chest. Like several other schools, ASU has added a sublimated pattern as a reference to the state flag. Not seen here is white pants that can be worn with the white jersey and a dark grey jersey.

ARKANSAS — Some minor changes for the Razorbacks, and it appears they no longer have a matte helmet.

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

Timberland World Hiker

During the fall months, most outdoor adventurers have two pairs of shoes — the durable trail-ready shoe or boot for hiking, and the laid-back boot for casual days. As the fall season nears and your focus shifts to updating your wardrobe with seasonally-appropriate gear, you may be thinking that you need both options, but I'm here to tell you otherwise.

By choosing the right fall boot, you can find a balance of durability for taking on a trail (and any seasonal elements), while still catering to your fashion sense. Hikers, in particular, are one of the best boot styles to choose from when looking for such versatility.

To spare you from spending loads of money on two pairs of boots this fall, we rounded up the seven best pairs for serving both purposes. Legacy brands like Timberland, L.L.Bean, and Eddie Bauer, as well as startups like Thursday Boot Company and Forsake all have options that ARE versatile enough for wearing on and off the trail.

Whether you're venturing off into the wilderness or simply getting dressed for a normal fall day, these boots can meet all of your needs.

Check them out, below:

Timberland World Hiker Mid

Timberland World Hiker Mid, available in six colorways, $110

With six colors ranging from this subdued green suede and gum-soled pair to a bold blue suede with orange-speckled midsoles, there's a pair for every type of fashion sense.

I went with my true shoe size and got the perfect fit. After wearing them all day long, I can say that SensorFlex soles make a real difference in comfort. While other boots are encumbering, the Timberland World Hiker Mid is as comfortable as a pair of high-top sneakers.

The most iconic power couple the year you were born

elvis priscilla presley

Power couples have been around since the dawn of time — Cleopatra and Mark Antony anyone? We've rounded up the best power couple from every year since 1952, whether it's a political dream team like the Obamas, or a short-lived but memorable pair like Paul Simon and Carrie Fisher.

These 67 couples were together through the highest points of their careers. Do you remember all of these duos?

1952: Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner

After getting married in 1951, singer Sinatra and actress Gardner enjoyed a huge amount of media attention. By '52, Gardner had begun getting bigger roles in movies, such as Kitty Collins in "The Killers" and Pandora Reynolds in "Pandora and the Flying Dutchman."

And her husband? He was well on his way to cementing his legacy as the greatest singer of the 20th century — though he was going through a bit of a rough patch when they married.

After 12 years of marriage, the couple divorced, but according to "Frank & Ava: In Love and War," they never really got over each other completely. According to the book, Sinatra called Gardner "the only woman I've ever been in love with in my whole life."

1953: Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe

The baseball star and the starlet went on their first date in 1952 — and the media was hooked. After a whirlwind courtship lasting all of 1953, DiMaggio and Monroe were married in January 1954 at San Francisco City Hall.

Their marriage was fraught with drama — Monroe accused him of mental cruelty when she filed for divorce in October 1954 — but they remained friends after their break-up. After Monroe's death, DiMaggio sent flowers to her grave several times a week for two decades.

DiMaggio's last words, according to his lawyer Morris Engelberg, were "I'll finally get to see Marilyn."

1954: Mel Ferrer and Audrey Hepburn

In 1954, Hepburn was riding high off the critical acclaim from her performance in "Roman Holiday," and won a Tony for her performance in "Ondine," which also starred Ferrer. The two actors were married in September of that year after eight months of dating. They also starred in two movies together, "Mayerling" and "War and Peace."

Their son Sean was born in 1960, but their marriage was over by 1968.
